MY RIDE VIDEO CONTEST
September 23 – VIA Metropolitan Transit is holding its first online video contest to encourage
transit users to share their experiences riding the bus. The “My Ride” video contest allows participants to upload their VIA-related videos to their favorite hosting website for a chance to win
an Apple ipad or a $500 gift card. VIA is looking for stories that can be told in about two minutes

La vida con Cristina ‘Freshman 30’: The New ‘Freshman 15’

I’ve always been a gym owl,
working out any time after
8 p.m. However, because of
my crazy schedule, I decided
to get into the habit of hitting
the gym before going to work.
All I can say is WOW. I
can’t believe I hadn’t done
this before!
I’m actually losing weight
significantly faster than the
usual. In just one week of
working out at 7 a.m. I’m
experiencing the delight of
loose-fitting clothes and less
time looking in the mirror
worrying whether my outfit
makes my butt look too big.
So I decided to do a little
research to find out what the
heck this is all about. Well,
rise and shine, my friend, because training in the morning
definitely has its benefits!
First of all, training in the
morning will free up the rest
of your day, allowing you to
focus on work and enjoy your
evening activities.
By completing your workout early in the morning,
you’re also guaranteeing that
you’ll actually do it. My point
is, after a long painful day
at work, it’s easier to make
excuses or other plans in order to skip a workout. In the
morning, your body and mind
are fresh and ready to rock
‘n’ roll. Just remember that
being disciplined is the key
to staying fit, so start losing
your snoozing habits.
As you may know, exercise increases mental acuity.
By training in the morning,
you’ll wake up faster and be
mentally alert at the crack of
dawn. It’ll also give you time
to plan your day effectively
before getting to work.
In addition, a good morning
workout provides that rush of
adrenaline and a sense of accomplishment that will stick
with you throughout the day.
So will it help you shed
pounds quicker? The answer
is “yes,” morning training
has been proven efficient
for weight loss. The reason
is simple: Training in the
morning will help “jumpstart” your metabolism and
keep it elevated for up to 24
hours, burning more calories
throughout the day.
Try exercising first thing
in the morning on an empty
stomach. If you’re feeling a
little weak, sip a small cup
of black coffee or a glass of
orange juice. It will help you
get started.
Finally, have you ever noticed how healthy you feel
after a workout? And how you
become turned off by greasy,
unhealthy food? That said,
training in the morning will
force you to start watching
what you eat from the first
meal of the day. It will help
regulate your appetite and set
a “healthy mindset.”
Are you convinced yet? If
so, great –but expect an adjustment period. Normally, it
should take about three weeks
for your body to fully adjust
to the time change. You’ll
start feeling fully energized;
you’ll wake up more easily
and will generally be more
alert.
Now all you need is a louder
alarm clock to help you get up
those first few weeks. Before
you know it, you’ll be a lean,
mean, morning machine.

With the invention of beer pong,
the dollar menu and the immediate
lack of funds you will endure while
living on your own—beware.
I can remember my freshman
year like I remember what’s in the
U.S. Constitution. Only the important stuff matters and I’m not quite
sure of the order. I lived off campus
and late nights of consuming mass
amounts of beer and being broke
was the norm. The introduction of
beer pong made drinking a sport
and my excuse for drinking was “I
need practice.”Due to my lack of
funds, my diet consisted of a variety
of my favorite dollar-menu items
ranging from double cheese burgers
to chocolate shakes and apple pies.
On days when I had a few extra
dollars and felt like splurging CiCi’s
pizza was the spot. The fact the
employees at these places knew me
by name and expected my late night
excursions for food never struck me
as a bad thing until summer rolled
around. I started to notice a spare
tire developing around my waist
and a pudgy lump forming under
my chin. I knew then that all the beer
and dollar-menu delights I enjoyed
decided to stick around. So, I dusted
off my student id and hit the gym.
Two weeks later and multiple failed
trips to the gym later I was back to
“practicing.”
After a while I became content
with my plump figure because most
girls didn’t mind and it was easier to
eat out and drink beer than to go to
the gym. My freshman year alone I
put on an extra 30 pounds. As years
past, the better my beer pong skills
got, the bigger my gut and double
chin became. I let my bad habits
spiral out of control and my body
was a walking example of what
years of neglect to your body can
lead to. I finally retired after years
of beer pong, and I said good bye to
all my friends I made at drive-thru
windows.
My bad habits got the best of
me and changing my lifestyle was
a challenge that took many failed
attempts. I would say I was going to
make a change, but I would easily
fall back into my bad habits. Once
I found my motivation to get back
to my old form my life’s been awesome. I’ve learned to cook and shop
weekly for groceries. Fast-food and
dollar menus may seem cheaper
but in reality you get more for your
money at the grocery store and half
the calories.
Incoming freshman beware of
falling into bad habits while living
on your own. It’s better to be the
skinny crappy beer pong player in
the room than the fat guy who’s the
best player. To those of you who
have been sharpening your beer pong
skills for years now and have every
single dollar menu memorized, it’s
not too late. Ditch your old bad habits
and start a new lifestyle. Your beer
drinking skills will suffer and you’ll
lose your fast-food friends but the
chances of developing “front butt”
will greatly decrease.

El taller artesanal MujerArtes
tendrá su exhibición de arte
titulada “Expresión de la mujer
a través del barro” para celebrar
sus 15 años de existencia. Durante un mes usted podrá disfrutar de
buen arte creado por mujeres de
nuestro lado oeste de la ciudad.
Ocho mujeres maravillosas y
una niña extraordinaria aprendieron casi empíricamente, bajo la
tutela de la artesana Verónica
Castillo, las técnicas artísticas
del barro. Dedicaron ocho meses
en la creación de las 80 piezas
que se exhibirán a partir del próximo sábado. Todas las piezas son
de barro, hechas a mano, y entre
ellas encontrará arboles de vida,
azulejos, platones y tazones.
El 90 por ciento de las veces
las mujeres plasman sus propias
historias o recuerdos personales
de su infancia y vida en las piezas
de arte.
“Es muy importante que nuestra comunidad y las mujeres
recordemos de dónde venimos,
valoremos lo que somos y que
pasemos esas tradiciones que
nos identifican”, comentó Imelda
Arismendez, coordinadora de
MujerArtes.
Cuando las mujeres van a las
clases se ponen en contacto con
su propia cultura, se transportan a sus raíces y la mayoría
de las veces se dan cuenta que
tienen una artista dentro de ellas
solamente que nunca se les dio la
oportunidad de ver su potencial.
La duración del proceso de
crear piezas de barro dura aproximadamente tres semanas y también depende del clima.
Primero, se moldea el barro a la
figura que se desea, segundo, se
deja secar completamente, luego
las mujeres pintan sus propias
historias y recuerdos en su pieza,
después se mete la pieza al horno
por primera vez. Una vez que se
“hornea” la pieza, esta se glasea
y por último se vuelve a introducir al horno para ser horneada
una segunda vez.
Como cooperativa artesanal
todas las mujeres que forman
parte de MujerArtes se ayudan
una a otra en la creación de la
obra artística. Es decir, si una
necesita ayuda en moldear el
barro una ayuda a moldear y otra
a pintar.
El programa de MujerArtes
fue diseñado para satisfacer las
necesidades de mujeres latinas de
bajos recursos que se interesen
en tomar clases de arte que de no
ser por este programa no tendrían
la oportunidad de hacerlo. Estas
clases son completamente gratis
y mujeres hispanoparlantes son
bienvenidas.

Just to be clear, this is a
romantic comedy. It is not, I
repeat: It is NOT, a chick flick!
Okay, I just felt I have to make
sure you don’t think I’m on the
chick flick bandwagon lately.
“Going the Distance,” is Drew
Barrymore’s latest comedy. After all, does she make any other
type of film? I mean, recently,
of course.
Barrymore plays Erin in the
movie, a novice print journalist
with a summer internship at a
small newspaper in New York.
One night, after a rough day at
work, Erin and her best friend
head out to a neighborhood bar
for some much needed R&R.
While playing her favorite
arcade game, Garrett, played by
Justin Long (“Funny People,”
“He’s Just Not That Into You,”
Mac TV spots), rudely interrupts
her and coincidentally finds out
she is the local record holder
for that game. She’s instantly
his hero!
Realizing that he’s messed
up the near-conquest of her
long-standing record, he feels
so bad that he offers to buy her
a drink. (At this point, I have to
mention, Barrymore and Long
are a couple in real life. This was
actually a plus when it came to
their on-screen chemistry. But
I digress.)
Well, that one drink catapults
them into a “whirlwind” romance that seems to be perfect,
that is, until reality hits. You
see, Erin’s internship soon ends
and having not been offered a
permanent position, she must
head back to San Francisco. This
creates a serious dilemma as
they are now all the way across
the country from each other.
Of course, what follows is
the basis of the movie. A young
couple in love trying to do what
so many have failed to do; overcome the infamous and mythical
long-distance relationship!!
Hence, the name of the movie.
Look, this is not a movie for
deep-thinkers or one that will
show you the meaning of life.
It is your typical comedy that
will tickle you here and there,
simple as that. The supporting
cast add plenty of laughs and
Christina Applegate (“Anchorman,” “Married with Children”)
was the right choice to play the
overprotective older sister.
I do have to warn you. The
language in this movie is NOT
for kids! It’s as crude as any 80’s
B-movie and very sexually explicit. There were some parents
with kids at the theater and I felt
bad for them. I definitely do not
recommend it as a “fun-filled
family movie!”
You know, I read so many bad
reviews prior to seeing “Going
the Distance” but, to be honest,
I’m not sure what film those
critics went to see. I sometimes
think some of these “national”
critics really have nothing better to say so they write meanspirited things to get attention.
Like it is with most critics, 99%
of them have no experience in
our business and wouldn’t know
the difference between a Beta
cam and a VHS cam.
I highly disagree with them
on this one and I see this movie
for what it is; a comedy most
will find entertaining. Yes, very
crude at times but have you
heard what is said and discussed
at most bars nowadays? Exactly.
So, is it good? Watch it and
you decide!

a la que haces referencia en tu carta y
no tengo una explicación plausible al
respecto, pero ha despertado en mí algunas reflexiones que a continuación
comparto contigo. Todo el problema
estriba en la concepción que tiene
sobre la realidad. Parménides de Elea
decía que el universo, incluyendo el
tiempo y el espacio, y quizá nosotros,
no somos otra cosa que una apariencia o un caos de apariencias. Thomas
Carlyle en Sartor Resartus menciona
lo mismo solo que para este escocés
el universo es una farsa. En el mismo
sentido, para el obispo Berkeley, la
materia es una serie de percepciones
inconcebibles sin una conciencia que
las perciba. Para John Locke lo único
existente son percepciones y sensaciones, y recuerdos y percepciones
sobre esas sensaciones; la materia
existe y los cinco sentidos nos dan

Guitarists Rodrigo y
Gabriela at the Majestic

Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela
Quintero, both 36-year-old guitar
virtuosos, bring their unique and
explosive musical sound to San
Antonio for the first time Sept 4.
Known to all as Rodrigo y Gabriela, the music is not all that is
unique about the duo – their individualistic style imbues everything
– even their ride to success. After
years of playing with the metal
group Tierra Acida in Mexico City
where they first met, they knew
they could do better.
“We used to play heavy metal
in Mexico City, from around ’89
to ’98, when we left for Ireland,”
Sanchez said. “We went there
because we didn’t succeed -- and
the sound we have now is really
natural and organic, a thing that
just happened,” he said.
The distinctive sound they created was born when they changed
their instruments and their surroundings to the streets of Dublin.
“We traded our electric guitars for
acoustic, and played the streets –
we toured Europe, Spain, France
and Denmark, and the music was
a natural progression,” Sanchez
said.
That sound Rodrigo describes is
truly the duo’s signature – a mix of
metal and Latin roots, of classic
rock and magic – all played on
acoustic guitars with nylon strings,
developed while busking all over
Europe. If you close your eyes
while listening, with Gabriela’s
hand percussion and Rodrigo’s
riffs, you’d never know it wasn’t
a full-blown band.
“We learned a lot, especially
during those years, we were playing all day long back then,” Sanchez said. “We are lucky, we feel
privileged -- now we no longer
have those financial issues,” he
added. Moreover, all that playing led to an amazing mix that is
purely Rodrigo y Gabriela.
People sometimes hear a hint
of flamenco in the music, but
Sanchez explains the music is
a mix of many influences. “We
love flamenco, but we don’t play
flamenco at all, the technique is
different,” he said. “On the rock
side, I play the way I would play
an electric guitar – somebody who
is into metal would recognize that
right away.”
The music is instrumental and
the melody takes the place of
where the vocals would normally
be. “Gabriela also had to develop
her rhythm style on her own, because she didn’t have any formal
training ... Since we didn’t go to
any sort of music school, she just
came up with her style on her own,
out of the need to keep the feel that
we were still in a full band. There
was never a moment where we
said, ‘Okay, let’s play this metal
thing here and translate it into
Celtic or whatever,” he said.
Sanchez said the change was
necessary -- they might have
missed everything if they hadn’t
made the bold move to Ireland.
For five years, the duo barely
communicated with their families
back home.
“We really were on a spiritual
journey – we restructured our lives
and our music,” Sanchez said.
Part of that restructuring included made-to-order guitars from
Yamaha, designed to adapt to their
amazing new sound and need for
amplification. The two new lines
of acoustic guitars are the result of
a collaboration of the artists.
“With these new guitars, Yamaha has been able to combine the
traditional feel of the classical
guitar with an updated look and the
most pure amplified sound you can
get,” said Dennis Webster, marketing manager, Yamaha Guitars.
“The result of the combination of
look, feel and sound is that the
two hottest nylon string players on
the planet are exclusively playing
these new guitars.”
And the duo is hot – the new
electronics on the guitars are essential to the performances on
this tour. “The venues are getting
bigger, and we needed different
electronics on the guitars to make
it sound bigger and because now,
we run around the stage,” Sanchez
explained.

Paty Cantú: “Afortunadamente No Eres Tu”

Orgullosamente originaria de
Texas, hija de padres mexicanos,
la cantante Paty Cantú ha logrado
cosechar un gran éxito en su
carrera de cantante. Después de
haberse dado a conocer con el
proyecto musical de Lu, dueto que
ha desaparecido, lanzó su primer
disco de solista que le valió un gran
reconocimiento.
Ahora lanza su segunda producción titulada “Afortunadamente
No Eres Tu”, disco que ya salió
a la venta en el formato digital y
saldrá a las tiendas próximamente.
En entrevista con La Prensa, la
cantante habló de este proyecto
como solista.
“Es un disco de historias reales,
con el que cualquier persona puede
identificarse. Tuve mucha libertad
en la temática y es un trabajo muy
honesto. Tú sabes, cuenta casos
sobre la vida, si nos han engañado
o si hemos engañado. Hay cosas
que he vivido, como por ejemplo,
después de haber terminado la
relación con mi novio que fue
de cinco años— esas cosas las
cuenta através del disco. Quería
que fuera un disco digerible con
fusiones musicales con base en el
pop”, dijo.
La música de la intérprete es totalmente diferente a lo que presentan los artistas de este género. Sin
embargo las influencias y mezclas
con otros géneros son lo que le dan
ese toque original de Paty.
“Los artistas estamos tratando de
evolucionar, eso es una responsabilidad. Cada vez hay menos espacio
para los artistas. La industria ha
sufrido mucho por la piratería, hay
muchos artistas que están tratando
de hacer buenas cosas. Los artistas
tenemos la obligación de hacer
grandes discos, ya no se pueden
hacer discos con dos canciones
buenas y las demás de relleno.
Ya no puedes entregar un disco
cualquiera, hay que entregar el
mejor disco”, expresó la intérprete
de “Afortunadamente No Eres Tu”.
Añadió también, “En mi caso
fusioné muchos sonidos de los
ochentas y canciones rítmicas, con
muchos sonidos actuales y electrónicos. También sigue habiendo
pop orgánico con instrumentos en
vivo, las baladas siguen siendo con
una esencia de rock pop británico.
Es bien padre experimentar con
todas estas cosas”.
Hablando de esta industria y de
los difíciles momentos que se ven a
diario, causa de la crisis económica
y de la piratería, ella habla de la
definición de los géneros musicales
en la actualidad.
“Si hay géneros musicales pero
ya no son excesivamente divididos como antes. Ya se mezcla los
ritmos como pop con bachata y
ritmos folklóricos— hay muchas
mezclas pero siempre tiene que
haber un género definido para la
música”, compartió.
Catalogada como la nueva voz
femenina del pop, Paty Cantu no
solo ha cantado para los adultos
que gustan de su música. También
interpretó una canción para la
película de Disney, en la versión
en español, del personaje “Tinker
Bell”, experiencia que según ella
le dio la oportunidad de crecer más
a nivel artístico.
“Tuve la oportunidad de trabajar en la música de la película de
“Tinker Bell y el tesoro perdido”,
de Disney. Fue muy bonito porque
de chica cuando quería ser cantante también quería ser parte del
mundo de Disney, ser parte de un
personaje con el que me identifico
[ya que] tiene muchas cualidades
de una mujer actual”.
El disco lanzado bajo la compañía de Capitol Latin, cuenta
con 11 temas en su mayoría de la
autoría de la interprete, todos con
su toque personal, incluso, el tema
“Goma de Mascar”, es uno de los
más originales.
“Me da gusto que mucha gente
me ha comentado del contenido de
esa canción, fíjate que ahí como
que quería darle un toque cómico a
una canción. Hacerles un homenaje
a artistas que me han inspirado
desde siempre, como Mecano. Es
una historia simple pero inteligente. Utilicé el sarcasmo en la
letra, el decir ‘te amo, pero no te
soporto’, en la letra le da ese toque
de sarcasmo”, concluyó.

padres son considerados tesoros
nacionales por su dedicación a la
artesanía de barro.
Castillo enfatizó que le fascina
el barro porque con este arte ella
puede mezclar los cuatro elementos de la naturaleza. El barro
se deriva de la tierra la cual se
mezcla con el agua, luego gracias
al aire ésta se seca y después se
necesita del fuego para hornear
el barro.
“El barro es algo mágico donde
se utilizan los 4 elementos de la
vida pero también sirve como
terapia ya que uno se olvida del
estrés”, agregó Castillo.
Lo que más le impresionó a
Castillo es que a pesar de que la
mayoría de las mujeres no han
tenido ningún tipo de educación
académica, ni de arte, todas
aprenden el arte del barro a la
perfección.
Arismendez comentó que algunas de las mujeres que han
formado parte de MujerArtes
han puesto sus propios estudios
o se han convertido en maestras
de arte.

noticia de la materia. Con ello hace
ver que lo importante de la realidad
de los objetos no son sus características primarias, sino la percepción
que tenemos y que logran crear sus
características secundarias.
Ahora quiero mencionarte algunas
ideas nuevas que me mencionó mi
suegro Paul Sollier y que vienen bien
a propósito de este caso. Recordarás
que mi suegro fue discípulo del
profesor Charcot y que hace más de
veinte años escribió un libro llamado
Les phénomenes d’autoscopie. Él
trabajó sobre todo sobre el fenómeno
de La Memoria. De hecho a partir de
su obra Les troubles de la mémoire
es que uno de sus pacientes, a quien
trató con su terapia de aislamiento
en el hospital Boulogne-Billancourt,
escribió una novela: À la recherche
du temps perdu. En esta novela
el hijo del profesor Adrien Proust
escribió: La verdadera realidad no
se capta sino por la mente. De tal
manera que la realidad que percibimos no sólo depende de los objetos
y circunstancias que nos rodean, sino
principalmente de la percepción y de
la memoria que conservamos de ellos. Para esta pobre mujer su realidad
es esa que describes: la persecución
incesante de las hermanas Bernhardt.
Debe de ser algo terrible, ¿lo puedes
imaginar? que estas mujeres logren
penetrar en las demás tomando su
apariencia y hasta su alma con la
única finalidad de martirizar…No
creo que se le pueda convencer de
algo distinto, para ella la realidad es
esa macabra percepción aunada a esa
imborrable memoria. Nuestro amigo
Henri Bergson, por cierto sobrino del
profesor Proust y primo del novelista,
ha dedicado muchos de sus esfuerzos en analizar “la realidad”. De
hecho su libro Matière et Mémoire
habla de ello. Para Henri las funciones del movimiento, sensación,
percepción y recolección dependen
del cerebro, pero que “la memoria
pura” es un reservorio espiritual de
imágenes del pasado y solo aquellas
relevantes son traídas al presente.
Los objetos concretos requieren ser
“espacializados” y para eliminar la
variación en su apariencia requieren
ser “conceptualizados”. Así mismo,
la representación del hombre para sí
mismo, suele ser motivo de una risa
inconsciente: el hombre se ríe de su
propia representación, de la caricatura de sí mismo, de su deformación.
Los ahora llamados “surrealistas” y
los pintores “impresionistas” (entre
ellos curiosamente se cuenta a la
Bernhardt) han acentuado aún más
la importancia de la percepción que
tenemos del mundo sobre el mundo
mismo.

juntos al Teatro Olympia, el cual
recordarás se encuentra frente a la
casa y estudio de Monsieur Nadar en
Boulevard des Capuchines. Proyectarán una retrospectiva de Leopoldo
Frégoli, ese gran transformista quien
decía: El arte es la vida y la vida es la
transformación.

in the Arizona antiimmigrant law and to

toward immigrants

The songwriting
contest has been
widely successful and
is now planning the
next phase. Composers from throughout
the USA submitted
over 200 compositions before the July
18th deadline. Various genres were submitted, including tejano,
norteño, mariachi, rock,
banda and gospel.

During the past month, a panel
of seven independent judges narrowed the sum of the submissions

Machete, el héroe latino que estábamos esperando

su “Ugly Betty” que había un lugar
en la televisión norteamericana
para una estrella latina que brillara en la tele por derecho propio,
y George López pudo ganarse un
lugar en el corazón de los televidentes sin importar su origen étnico aún cuando veinte años atrás
alguien tan latino como él jamás
hubiese podido protagonizar una
telecomedia.
Ahora, finalmente nos ha llegado el momento de demoler una
última barrera: que un personaje
latino protagonice una película
de acción.
De la misma manera en la que
el John McClane de Bruce Willis
molía a patadas a los criminales
que le hacían frente en la saga
de “Die Hard”, o que el Martin
Riggs de Mel Gibson hacía otro
tanto en las cuatro películas de
“Lethal Weapon” (acompañado
de un afroamericano interpretado

por un ex-federal convertido en
sacerdote (Cheech Marin), que

empuñando una pistola, una atractiva vendedora de tacos que sabe
como hacerse respetar (Michelle
Rodríguez) y la propia hija del
empresario (Lindsay Lohan), a
quien Machete primero secuestra
para tratar de vengarse pero con
quien luego termina forjando una
estrecha amistad. Pero para poder
concretar su misión y dejar en descubierto al corrupto senador, primero deberá deshacerse de todos los
que le persiguen, entre ellos una
decidida oficial de inmigración
interpretada por Jessica Alba, que
en cuanto conoce a Machete se da
cuenta que tal vez está trabajando
para la causa equivocada.
“Machete” es la primera película
que protagoniza Danny Trejo, un
veterano actor cuya historia de
vida daría para que algún día se
contara en un largometraje. Con
un rostro inolvidable y un físico
privilegiado, Trejo ha participado en innumerables películas de
acción, aunque siempre en pa-
peles secundarios. Entre los casi
doscientos títulos que integran su
filmografía se destacan intensos
largometrajes como “Heat” de
Michael Mann, en la que compartió cartel tanto con DeNiro
como con Al Pacino, “Con Air”,
con Nicolas Cage, y una buena
cantidad de títulos dirigidos por
Robert Rodríguez, quien además
presentó a Machete en sociedad en
el falso corto que formó parte de
“Grindhouse”, el experimento en
el que colaboró con otro grande del
cine de acción, Quentin Tarantino.

Rosalinda Risso’s latest film projects to benefit San Antonio

Rosalinda Risso might be a famous Mexican actress, but lucky
for us, she’s now an Alamo City
resident.
Risso has joined the ranks of Vicente Fernández, Alejandro Fernández, Laura Flores and other Mexican
singers and actors who now call
San Antonio home. Daniela Romo
has family here, but does not own
a home.
After thirteen films under her belt,
ten in Mexico plus three movies in
Hollywood, Risso is set to film her
next two movies in Texas.
“The first to be produced by
Alejandro Concho is ‘La Llorona,’”
Risso told La Prensa. “And I will
serve as executive director in this
production which will be made in
Guanjuato, Mexico and some parts
of Texas.”
“The second will be ‘The Man
from Bandera.’” This one will be
produced by Donald Tegue and
feature Tea Leoni plus other wellknown American actors,” added
Risso.
Best of all, some scenes for both
films will be shot in San Antonio,
thus helping the local economy with
work that will be needed for behind
the scenes, not to mention, the hotel
and restaurant industry will benefit
as well.
During her acting career, the
5-feet-1-inch actress has starred
opposite Dave Carridine, Andres
García, Rosenda Bernal, Sasha
Montenegro, Joe Estevez, David
Reynoso plus his two sons, Sergio
and Jorge, plus to many others to
mention.
“My father, Salvador Ángel Risso, owned palenques throughout
Mexico, so in addition to seeing the
top stars of the day perform, I would
also see them at our home when they
would come over for fiestas and
pachangas,” recalled Risso. This is
why when she ran into Vikki Carr at
this year’s Fiesta Flambeau Parade
press conference, they enjoyed the
unexpected reunion as they reminisced about the days when Carr
toured her father’s palenques.
“It was from growing up among
the likes of Vicente Fernández, Lupita D’Alessio, Lucha Villa and so
many of Mexico’s greatest vocalists
that this craziness to be a singer was
born,” Risso said with a laugh.
“I was 16 when I performed at a
palenque for the first time. María de
Lourdes and Ángelica María were
with me and my mind went blank. I
was terrified, but Ángelica signaled
me to start again. The mariachi
started the tune again and this time
I was able to sing,” said Risso.
A hit record – “El Principe” featuring “Cómo Se Cambia”- followed
and Risso’s musical career took
off. Somewhere along the way, she
became a songwriter. Two months
ago Risso submitted a tune for
consideration in Dr. Paul and Mar-

Bitten by the
worry bug
Querida Nina:

I worry about worrying.
Does that sound crazy?
There are nights when I stay up for hours worrying about
my life, my kids, my parents, why the branches on my tree
are scratching my window, why I can’t sleep, why I can’t
shake this cough, how to get through the week with money
leftover … the list goes on and on.
I worry that worrying itself will cause harm. Since I’m losing sleep, I’m losing the attentiveness I need for daily tasks
and therefore risk getting into a car accident or making careless mistakes at work. Then I worry about the car accident
that has yet to happen and how I will take care of my kids
from the hospital bed that I’m stuck in.
I worry at night and I worry during the day. I wish I could
protect my children 24 hours a day, I wish I could help all
those around me with their problems. I wish I could fix every
broken heart that crosses my path. I worry about others, even
those whom I don’t know. If I could solve everyone’s problems (including my own) I would in a heartbeat.
I worry that every night when I’m home alone, someone is
watching me, waiting for me to jump in the shower. Think
about it … this is the perfect time to sneak up on someone.
While I’m in the shower, I won’t hear the window break or
the door open. I am at my most vulnerable when I shower;
therefore, I don’t shower when I’m home alone.
I worry that if I take one too many medications, I will fall
asleep and never wake up (all because of a measly cough).
I worry that if I consume too much Vitamin C my ears will
ring all day long. I worry that if I drink milk that’s one day
past its expiration date it will give me the runs. I worry about
the cream I chose to put on my face and if it will cause me
to break out. I worry if eating Chinese food will cause me to
retain water all weekend long.
I know we all struggle with our own demons, worrying is
mine. The good thing is that I still live life and take chances
every day. I live for the moment and don’t let this mind of
mine take over. I think worrying keeps me grounded. It reminds me that life is fragile.
For me, worrying is just another way of showing that I care.

“otra” te pone en desventaja, pues siempre estarás en segundo plano, y
estos dos años creo que son prueba suficiente de ello. Su esposa siempre
llevará las de ganar, ya sea por los hijos, por los años de matrimonio o
por la propia comodidad del hogar. Termina con esa relación, al principio
sufrirás, pero pasará, tú te mereces a un hombre solo para ti, alguien con
quien puedas pasear de la mano en público, con quien pasar fechas especiales, una persona que esté disponible todo el tiempo, no solo a ratos,
alguien con quien formar un hogar. Te mereces lo mejor de la vida, lucha
por tu felicidad, ese hombre no vale la pena no te hará feliz NUNCA, tal
vez ni él mismo lo sea, pero ese es su problema, no el tuyo. Que Dios
te bendiga y abre los ojos, el verdadero amor tal vez está más cerca de
lo que crees.

Soy una persona muy perceptiva y últimamente en mi trabajo hay
un ambiente de mucha envidia lo cual me hace sentir mal, pues no es
cómodo trabajar rodeada de personas que emiten una energía negativa. ¿Cómo le hago para sobrellevar esa situación?

Querida Lorena:
La envidia, sin duda, es un sentimiento de baja autoestima, cuando una
persona ve superior a otra, al mismo tiempo se ve inferior ella misma. No
quiero desalentarte Lorena, pero ningún trabajo, ningún lugar en el que
se den las relaciones interpersonales, está exento de este sentimiento tan
negativo, mi consejo es que te concentres en tu trabajo, no dejes de dar
lo mejor de ti, no te contamines de las actitudes negativas de los demás,
recuerda siempre que tus buenas acciones tendrán recompensas favorables,
no caigas en el juego, no te dejes llevar por lo que la envidia ocasiona. Te
voy a compartir una Fábula: Cuenta la leyenda, que una vez, una serpiente
empezó a perseguir a una Luciérnaga; ésta huía rápido y con miedo de la
feroz depredadora, pero la serpiente no pensaba desistir. Huyó un día y ella
no desistía, dos días y nada. En el tercer día, ya sin fuerzas, la Luciérnaga
paró y dijo a la serpiente: ¿Puedo hacerte tres preguntas? No acostumbro
dar éste precedente a nadie pero como te voy a devorar, puedes preguntar.
¿Pertenezco a tu cadena alimenticia? No. ¿Yo te hice algún mal? No. Entonces, ¿Por qué quieres acabar conmigo? Y la serpiente le contestó: porque
no soporto verte brillar. Lorena, no permitas que nadie apague tu brillo,

Today, Risso is a fixture at most
of the Hispanic Heritage Society’s
galas and concerts. And as a board
member, she says, “I want to educate
Hispanic youth on their roots so they
can feel proud to be Latino.”
Risso is currently working with
Cristina Ortega with La Sociedad de
Herencia Hispana, which is presenting “Remembering Agustin Lara
– ‘El Idolo de México’ Solamente
una Vez,” which features some of
his most famous and popular songs.

The first act exalts Lara’s beloved
Veracruz and Spain and features
the world famous “Granada.” The
second act is “La Mujer y El Amor.”
Therefore one can expect to hear
Lara classics such as “María Bonita,” which he wrote for his thenwife, María Felix, plus “Mujer” and
“Solamente Una Vez.”
Lara’s famous hits will be interpreted by Nataly Peña, Emanuel
Zapata and Héctor Hernández, who
are collectively known as Voces de
San Antonio. In addition, the gala includes a special appearance by Risso
during which she will sing “Madrid”
plus a potpourri of love songs.
Also performing are Trio Las
Chic’s and César de la Cruz; flamenco dancers España Viva and
the Ballroom Dancers Ensemble.
Pianist Jorge Infante did all the
musical arrangement and Ortega is
the artistic director.
This great musical review will
take place at 7 p.m. Saturday, August
28 at the San Antonio Playhouse

The show in San Antonio on
Sept 4 at the Majestic Theater will
be spectacular, with special guest
Bobby Long, well known for his
work on the Twilight Original
Motion Picture Soundtrack, which
featured his song, “Let Me Sign,”
co-written with fellow musician
Marcus Foster and performed by
star Robert Pattinson.
“It‘s the first time we go to San
Antonio and we are very excited,”
Sanchez told La Prensa.
The show highlights the third
studio album, 11:11, released last
September and recorded at their
studio in Ixtapa, Mexico. The
album, which ranks number 1 on
Billboard’s world album chart and
number 3 on its indie albums chart,
includes guest appearances by
Alex Skolnick of metal outfit Testament and from the classic side,
guitarists Strunz & Farah. Rodrigo

lives,” Sanchez said. “On a personal level, our biggest challenge
is staying in touch with ourselves,”
he added.
The musical trendsetters advise
young musicians not to fall into
the trap of trying to fit someone
else’s mold. “Do your own thing,”
Rodrigo advises. “Make your own
sound,” he said.
