Toyota Motors issued a worldwide safety recall for 6.2 million
of their cars, 2.3 million of which
were sold in the U.S. Twentynine models have been recalled,
including the 2009-2010 Tacoma model manufactured at the
Southside San Antonio Toyota

de una experiencia pintoresca
bañada en confeti.
Los desfiles, comida y música
en vivo cuentan con una rica cul-
tura e historia que comenzó hace
más de 120 años con el popular
desfile conocido hoy en día como
el Battle of Flowers Parade.
“Nuestro primer desfile se llevó
a cabo en 1891”, contó Anne
Ballentyne presidenta de la asociación de Battle of Flowers a La
Prensa. “La esposa del congresista James Slayden, Ellen Slayden,
había visto un desfile similar en
Francia durante uno de sus viajes
a Europa y regresó a San Antonio
con la idea de hacer un desfile para
honrar a los héroes fallecidos de
El Álamo y para conmemorar la
victoria de San Jacinto”, añadió.
La victoria de San Jacinto fue
lo que marcó la independencia de
Texas de México el 21 de abril
de 1836.

San Antonians may want to
cut back on the fried foods this
Fiesta season.
Despite the Mayor’s Fitness
Council and San Antonio Metropolitan Health pushing different
initiatives to bridge the city from
fat to fit, San Antonio is ranked
as the second fattest city in the
country, according to a Gallup
Poll released this week.
The survey shows more than
31 percent of San Antonians are
obese; however, the city of San
Antonio announced in August
that the obesity rate dropped 6.6
percent.
Metro Health’s Assistant Director of Community Health Jennifer Herriott told La Prensa the
city is moving towards the right
direction, but it’s going to take a
long time to make the shift from
fat to fit.
“Just as the obesity rate increased from the 1980s to where
we are currently, it took 20 to
30 years for us to see that slow
increase so it’s going to take us 20
to 30 years to really reverse that
and it really is going to require
a culture shift,” Metro Health’s
Matrix, 2008-2010 Highlander,
2006-2008 RAV4 and 20062010 Yaris vehicles. Presently,
Toyota has not reported any
injuries or fatalities due to these
issues.
Local Toyota dealerships had
different responses to the recall,
“We just notify the customer and
schedule an appointment with a
service advisor for repairs,” a
Cavender Toyota service representative told La Prensa.
“There’s really no way to tell
how many people will come in,”
Julie Herrera, a service advisor
at Cavender Toyota said Friday.
However, several other major
Toyota dealerships were unaware of the company’s recall on
Wednesday when the announcement was made.
“Was it a seatbelt problem?”
an Alamo Toyota service representative asked when asked
about the recall.

its 18th Annual Diamond Awards
Gala and Fernando Herrera, the
pianist who played the last musical piece for President John F.
Kennedy before his death in Dallas, TX, will be there for guests
to enjoy.
The gala will be held on April
24 at 6 p.m. at the Omni Hotel at
the Colonnade.
The foundation’s main objective is to invest in San Antonio
students by providing them with

Besides being known for his
talent on the piano, guitar and
vocals, Herrera is the creator of
the “Tremolino” technique, which
took place after practicing the
flamenco guitar for a long time.
“I had the opportunity to play
the piano for several politicians
including former Mayor Lila
Cockrell, then President Lyndon
B. Johnson and three Presidents of
Mexico; Lázaro Cárdenas, Manuel
Camacho and Gustavo Ordaz,”
said Herrera.

ously had the vehicle repaired
for same issue, they would be
reimbursed,” Knight said.
Toyota’s actions come in the
midst of a GM recall on 2.6
million cars. GM also faces an
ongoing investigation through
the U.S. justice department as to
why the company waited until
February to report defects with
the cars, when they became aware
of the issues a decade earlier.

perspective of Conjunto music.
Instead of a traditional painting
or drawing, Hernandez used scissors, glue and colored paper to
make his vision a reality.
“I cut paper from magazines
and newspapers and put them
together,” Hernandez said. “I like
the colors and layering shapes
over other shapes.”

$1,000 check for his work.
As he approached the podium
to receive his award, his peers
offered plenty of moral support.
“Abel! Abel!” rang the cafeteria, as classmates of Hernandez
cheered and waved handmade
posters.
Hernandez’s work will be used
for all the Tejano Conjunto Festival materials including t-shirts,
posters and passes. The posters
are a coveted Fiesta collector’s
item to some.
Brentwood Middle School has
had its share of artists, as a se-
mester prior another student won
a prize for a piece of art submitted for Altarcitos in the Barrio,
another Fiesta favorite.
Art teacher Ms. Diana Valdez
may have a lot to do with that, as
she encourages her students to
express what they feel through
the power of art.
“Our students are very motivated, and I am blessed to have
these children in my class so willing to work and learn,” Valdez
said. “We have been blessed for
our students to win prizes and
recognition every year, but we
have never won something this
big. We are very proud of Abel.”

Brian W. Sharp, diagnosed at age 24 with juvenile arthritis
As early as 12, I knew I wanted to serve in the United States Air Force (USAF). And so,
shortly after graduating high school in 1987, I was off to Basic Military Training at Lackland
Airforce Base (AFB) and on my way to learning a trade and to serving my country proudly.
At the age of 24, however, I was diagnosed with a severe form of juvenile arthritis called
“Ankylosing Spondylitis”, otherwise known as “Poker Spine”. This type of arthritis affects
young people, from as early on as birth, up to their mid-30s. The impact of the disease
causes severe pain, inflammation and calcification in all the major joints in the body. My
condition is so severe that it has resulted in the fusion of my neck, spine and rib cage, loss of
cartilage in both knees, and a splintered left knee.
The disease ultimately led to my medical retirement in Feb 2001 after only 13-1/2 years of
service. I continued to work for the Air Force as a DoD Contractor and Civil Service employee
up until 2010. However, during that time my arthritis became more active and began limiting
my physical activities. In turn, the pain got worse and I became sedentary, overweight and
depressed, so much so that I reached a point in my life that I finally said “Enough is enough”.

In the fall of 2010, I said “This is my time…I’m not going to let my arthritis ruin my life”. My
rheumatologist advised contact sports like volleyball, softball and basketball were off-limits
due to the condition and fragility of my neck and spine. That’s when my running journey
began.
On Thanksgiving Day (2010), without any preparation or training, I registered for the annual
Thunder Cloud Subs Turkey Trot 10K in Austin, Texas (my hometown). Not knowing exactly
how long a 10K was (prior to the event), I crossed that finish line in 1:13:43. My body was in
severe pain for four-five days afterwards, but I overcame it and realized that if I could run/
walk a 10K, I could incorporate speed-walking (and maybe one day running) into my life.
Walking and running has truly made a difference in my life. I know that as time passes, my
physical condition will continue to deteriorate, but I’m not giving up!

Major General Freddie Valenzuela served thirty-three years
in the US Army and was highly
decorated for heroism and valor.
He served in three Combat
Corps and six Infantry Divisions
all over the world including Peru,
Korea, Colombia, Turkey, Haiti,
Kuwait, Grenada, Panama, Germany, El Salvador and Somalia,
not to mention numerous years
in interagency assignments. He
commanded in the Cold War
and Gulf War eras, and was
awarded the two highest peace
time awards upon retirement, the
Defense & Army Distinguished
Service Medals.
He is President/ CEO of
M.C. Valens; a service disabled
veteran owned business. His
company has accepted the US
mission to advise the senior

Since La Prensa Foundation’s
inception 18 years ago, the nonprofit has raised over $2.3 million in scholarships for students
with financial difficulties. This is

entrepreneurs of San Antonio.

Assistant Director of Community
Health Jennifer Herriott told La
Prensa.
Herriott credits the decline in
obesity to recent programs implemented throughout the city.
Fitness in the Park, for example, has 38 different fitness
stations throughout parks in the
community and offers over 500
classes to all San Antonians.
According to Herriott, over
20,000 people participated in
Fitness in the Park last year and
she’s expecting the numbers to go
up this years.
Other fitness programs include
S.A. Walks - a program with over
200 walking groups and over
2,000 registered walkers and the
Students Ambassadors Program
which works with students to allow them to promote fitness and
health.
Additionally, the city has also
implemented the Healthy Heroes
Program, a recognition program
for students that have done well
in terms of improving their health
and get pulled up as role models
for others.
According to Herriott, they’re
also working closely with the
business community to make sure
they are implementing a healthy
work place initiative.
“We’re trying to address things
in the school level, the community
level and also the work site level,”
Herriott added.
Herriott also sees more people
taking advantage of the expanded
bike lane and B-Cycle initiative.
“Because of the way San Antonio grew very quickly and
because of the way it’s laid out,
it hasn’t been pedestrian friendly
to alternative modes of transportation,” Herriott said. “That’s
improving but we’ve got a long
way to go in terms of people be-
ing able to use a bike or walk to
get to work.”
Encouraging residents to get
moving on their feet and bikes, the
sixth annual Síclovía took place
last Sunday bringing together
more than 50,000 San Antonians.

So far, the Million Pound Challenge website only marks 7,588
pounds lost, the goal is to reach
one million pounds by November
and to do it before Houston does.

fortalecen sus lazos durante la
temporada de Fiesta.
“Es muy divertido, tenemos
a abuelitas trabajando en este
desfile con sus nietas. Mi propia
madre fue miembro, y aunque ya
no está con nosotras sus amistades siguen activas y eso me
agrada”, añadió Ballentyne. “Es
muy divertido tener una historia
y una gran manera para conocer
a personas y hacer amistades”.
El desfile de Battle of Flowers
es el único en el país planeado y
dirigido completamente por mujeres. Es el desfile más grande de
Fiesta y es el segundo más grande
en rango nacional.
El evento se llevará a cabo en el
centro de la ciudad el 25 de abril.

COMMENTARY...
Los rusos quieren más

Milán. Los rusos están por
todos lados. Dos adelante y
cuatro detrás de mí en la fila
para mostrar el pasaporte en el
aeropuerto de Venecia. El único
funcionario italiano que nos
atiende habla ruso.
Seis damas rusas, con bolsas y
bolsas de compras, se apoderan
de una mesa en un restaurante
de moda cerca de Via della
Spiga en Milán. Afuera, en un
hermoso patio interior, un padre ruso llega con sus tres hijos
perfectamente uniformados con
chaquetas fosforescentes, verde
y naranja. Pide en ruso una mesa,
y el mesero italiano se la da inmediatamente.
El cuarto de mi hotel ofrece
seis canales en ruso y solo tres
en español. En el de Londres,
unos días antes, fue la misma
historia. Un diario local des
cribía cómo los inversionistas
rusos, temerosos de guardar su
capital en Moscú, han invadido
el mercado de valores londinense y disparado los precios de
las propiedades en la que ya es,
sin duda, la ciudad más cara del
mundo.
No es algo nuevo para mí.
Vivo en Miami, donde los ru-
sos veranean todo el año y su
presencia en clubes, los malls y
en restaurantes de lujo ha dejado
de llamar la atención.
Los rusos están por todos
lados porque pueden. Antes de
la desintegración de la Unión
Soviética en 1991, muy pocos
podían salir. Luego, las 15
naciones independientes que
surgieron (incluyendo Rusia)
se tardaron años en hacer una
dolorosísima transición a una
economía de mercado. Hace
menos de una década que los
rusos que se beneficiaron con las
privatizaciones de las empresas
estatales empezaron a salir en
masa a comprar y conquistar el
mundo.
No fue fácil dejar de ser una
gran potencia. Todavía en el
2006 una encuesta concluyó
que el 66 por ciento de los rusos
resentía la desaparición de la
Unión Soviética. Por supuesto;
eran una poderosa potencia
militar, con miles de bombas
nucleares, y el mundo los trataba
con respeto y miedo. Pasar del
socialismo con un solo partido
político a un sistema relativamente democrático y capitalista
fue una verdadera terapia de
shock.
Pero el impacto del cambio
ya pasó y ahora es, de nuevo,
la época de la expansión. Los
rusos quieren más. Y aquí es
donde entra el presidente Vladimir Putin, quien ha maniobrado
hábilmente para quedarse en
el poder, y quien no deja pasar
ninguna oportunidad de quitarse
la camisa en público.
Las olimpíadas de Sochi se
realizaron con éxito y ya se
preparan para el Mundial de
fútbol del 2018. Todo en grande.
Además, Putin no quiere lecciones de democracia de Estados
Unidos, un país que invadió Irak
sin razón; que tiene decenas de
prisioneros sin cargos en Guantánamo; y que ha espiado las
llamadas o correos de millones
en el mundo.
Rusia tiene 143 millones de
habitantes y solo la mitad de los
soldados que Estados Unidos.
Pero Putin ha re-interpretado
esa nostalgia de grandeza de sus
conciudadanos y ha decidido
enfrentar a Estados Unidos y a
los países europeos de la OTAN.
Primero bloqueando una acción
colectiva de Naciones Unidas
contra la dictadura en Siria y,
ahora, invadiendo Crimea y
promoviendo su ilegal anexión
a Rusia.
Rusia no es la Unión Soviética, pero sus 8,500 ojivas
nucleares hacen impensable cualquier opción militar. Es decir,
aunque Putin invada Crimea y
amenace Ucrania, Estados Unidos y la OTAN nunca atacarían.
Por eso, lo único que le queda
al presidente Barack Obama y a
sus aliados son sanciones, aislar
a Rusia y esperar que eso disipe
los sueños de grandeza de Putin.
La bravuconería de Putin al
amenazar a sus vecinos radica,
según dijo Obama, “más que en
la fuerza, en la debilidad.” Y,
añadiría, en la poca comprensión
de cómo funciona hoy el mundo.
Mientras Putin flexiona absurdamente su poderío militar, son
los rusos con su nuevo poder
adquisitivo los que realmente
están conquistando los lugares
más hermosos e importantes del
mundo, rublo por rublo.

Past couple of weeks hard for Texas
military community
State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte
As you well know by now, a
troubled soldier shot 19 people,
killing three of his fellow soldiers, before turning the gun on
himself and taking his own life.
The next week, I joined our
president and others at a Fort
Hood memorial service to help
the families of the three slain
soldiers mourn their loss.
It was a heartbreaking occasion. Military families understand that a certain amount of risk
comes with defending our nation.
But they assume the greatest
danger comes with deployment
— the don’t expect death or injury to happen when the service
member is at home.
My heart and prayers go out
to the families of Sgt. 1st Class
Danny Ferguson, Staff Sgt. Carlos A. Lazaney-Rodriguez, and
Sgt. Timothy Owens. I salute
both the soldiers themselves and
their loved ones — being the
daughter of an Army veteran
and the longtime chair of the
Texas Senate Veteran Affairs and
Military Installations (VAMI)
Committee, I understand that
it’s really the whole family that
serves.
We may never know for certain
what caused this tragedy. But I
do know we can work to prevent
similar ones. Mental health issues
have become a huge priority for
our nation’s military, and for
those of us on the VAMI committee as well.
The Army, Navy, Air Force,
and Marines are doing a great job
of saving lives on the battlefield,
but not such a great job when they
come home. As many as 18 veterans commit suicide every day.
Vietnam veterans, and veterans
of older conflicts, understand
all too well that these young
men and women who have done
multiple combat tours have been
physically and/or emotionally
impacted for the rest of their
lives. The reality is that the consequences of war stretch out for
decades into the future.
More must be done to make
sure active duty service members, veterans, and their families
have access to mental health services. Whether that is the VA or
the state’s informal peer-to-peer
network – it just needs to happen.
In last year’s legislative session, lawmakers passed bills
requiring a suicide prevention
component in the training of veteran county service officers, and
an expansion of the peer-to-peer
mental health services program.
We also secured funding in the
state budget for four to five fulltime mental health counselors
for our Texas National Guard.
Texas has the nation’s largest
Army National Guard force with
about 20,000 soldiers, and since
2008, Texas has ranked second
among states in Army National
Guard suicides. However, the
Texas National Guard had just
one full-time clinical psychologist to serve the 20,000 troops
dispersed throughout the state,
so this funding was badly needed.
We also passed numerous
other laws designed to make
Texas the number one state in the
nation for our veterans, activeduty military, and their families.
Clearly, the events at Fort Hood
show there is still more to be
done — but I promise to keep
working on it, every day. Our
heroes deserve no less.
Multinational corporations should pay
their fair share for our security
U.S. Congressman Lloyd Doggett
Perhaps you are getting ready
to file your taxes next week.
What would you say to paying a
tax rate of only 2 cents for every
dollar you earned this year? I
am confident that this is a deal
most families and small businesses would jump at. Though
that low tax rate is not available
to the overwhelming majority of
taxpayers, for some of the largest multinational corporations,
it is. For example, General Electric, has paid, on average, an
effective tax rate of only 1.8%
over the past 10 years.
As the debate over revamping our tax system continues in
Washington, it is critical that we
revive the discussion of how we
can ensure that the wealthiest
few pay their fair share of the
cost to fund our national and
economic security and to provide vital public services.
Multinationals Received as
Much in Tax Breaks as They
Paid in Taxes. Last week, the
House Ways and Means Committee on which I serve, held a
hearing on spending in the tax
code, called “tax expenditures.”
The Treasury loses money
each year due to corporate tax
loopholes, and those losses
have continued to grow over
the last few decades. A report,
which I requested, from the
nonpartisan Government Accountability Office, shows that
in 2011, the amount of revenue
that the Treasury lost as a result
of these corporate tax breaks –
approximately $181.4 billion
– was actually greater than the
total of all corporate tax payments to the Treasury. While
corporate profits last year hit
historic highs, corporate taxes
as a share of our revenue are at
historic lows. That is not fair to
every other taxpayer.
Hugest Entities Pay More
Lobbying Congress than in
Taxes. These misguided priorities should come as no surprise.
In one three-year period, 30
Fortune 500 companies spent
more on lobbying Congress
to reduce their taxes than the
amount of taxes they paid. All
but one of these companies paid
no corporate income tax at all
over those three years. These
large multinational companies
may have made a wise financial
investment for their bottom
lines, but they have made a
mess of our tax code and tax
fairness.
Taxpayers Should Not Subsidize Billions in Executive
Compensation. Our current tax
law has a perverse incentive:

What do the names Juan Seguin, Jose Antonio Navarro, Jose
Francisco Ruiz and Lorenzo de
Zavala and Adina Emilia De Zavala mean to you?
Juaan Seguin was the catalyst of
the movement that helped Texas
gain its independence from Mexico in the 1800s. In spite of what
is written in Texas history books,
Stephen F. Austin, Jim Bowie,
David Crockett, Sam Houston and
William Barret Travis were not
the men who started the revolution
against Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa. You could
say they were Johnny come lately.
In all honesty, it was Seguin
who was inspired by Miguel
Hidalgo y Costilla and his famous grito to take on a regime
change. Seguin based his revolution against Mexico on that grito.
As for the other individuals de
Zavala, Navarro and Ruiz they
were instrumental in helping
draft the constitution of the newly
formed Republic Of Texas.
As for Adina De Zavala, her
actions resulted in the Daughters
of the Republic of Texas being
formed, but more importantly
she began working with The San
Antonio Conservation Society and
helped keep the Cradle of Texas
Liberty from being razed.
The reason for the brief lesson
in Texas history is because the
influence of Mexican Ameri-
cans in Texas history is absent
from Texas history books in our
schools.
However, that all may change
in the near future thanks to Texas
State Board of Education (SBOE)
member Ruben Cortez Jr. His effort to create an elective course
on Mexican-American studies for
high schools in the state of Texas
was approved.
The uphill battle was sort of
a victory for Cortez. By an 11-3
vote the SBOE has added elective
courses to include Special Topics
in Social Studies. They include
African-, Asian-, Mexican and
Native American studies.
The SBOEs action cannot stand
on its own. The state’s largest
school district, The Houston
Independent School District,
voted and approved a Mexican
American Studies elective course
that would go towards receiving a diploma. A host of other
school districts across the state
have done the same, along with
the Texas Association of School
Administrators.
A move observers say couldn’t
have come at a better time when
you consider that Latinos make
up 51.3 percent of the state’s high
school students. Proponents of
the course said it’s only fair that
the state’s curriculum reflect the
make-up of the student population.

San Antonio) and Freddie II

Mifflin Publishing, Chicago),
their spouses Sean McCleskey, JoJo Mac Pherson, and
four grandchildren; Madison,
Hayden, Logan and Jaqi.
President Obama announces
his intent to appoint Major
General Alfred Valenzuela
USA (Ret), Appointee for
Member, World War I Centennial Commission
Major General Alfred Valenzuela retired after 33 years of
service in the U.S. Army.
He has served in three Combat
Corps and six Infantry Divisions
all over the world. Previously, he
was the President and CEO of the
San Antonio Housing Authority.
Major General Valenzuela has
served on the Boards of Directors
of the Boy Scouts of America,
Corporations...
executives, the less they pay in
taxes. Congress tried to tackle
this problem more than 20 years
ago by limiting the tax deduction for the first $1 million in
compensation per executive,
but it left an exception that
companies have exploited to
the tune of billions of dollars.
JP Morgan Chase announced
that it would pay its CEO Jamie
Dimon $20 million, in the same
year that his bank paid billions
in penalties for wrongdoing.
Chase can make this business
decision, but it should not ask
the American taxpayer to subsidize his salary.
My Bill Would Close Tax
Loopholes for Wealthiest Few.
I have introduced legislation
that would close multinational
corporate tax loopholes, treat
intellectual property as U.S.
income and tax it accordingly,
and ask our largest U.S. companies to pay the same fair
share that small businesses and
families in San Antonio are already contributing. I have also
introduced a bill to close the
the Family Service Association,
the Boys and Girls Club, Communities in Schools, and Haven
for Hope.
He is also a Member of the
Board of Trustees for St. Mary’s
University, the National Recreation Foundation Board, and
USAA Federal Savings Bank.
He received the Army and
Defense Distinguished Service
Medals, the Bronze Star for
Valor, and the Soldier’s Medal
for Heroism. Major General
Valenzuela graduated from the
U.S. Army Command and the
General Staff College, the Armed
Forces Staff College, the Air War
College, and the Inter-American
Defense College.
He received a B.A. and an
M.A. from St. Mary’s University
in San Antonio.

Just a Thought: SA Hispanic Reporters
Last week I was privileged to
be interviewed by Chris Duel, local talk show host and long time
radio icon that includes a stint
on KTSA Radio. Besides doing
commentary on the Spurs games,
and acting in local commercials,
he also does a daily scheduled
talk show for an hour, five days
a week on the internet. That show
is called Talk Now SA.
Every day he invites local various guests and/or celebrities to
discuss the current local issues
and comment on everything from
politics, sports, to community
happenings and then some.
This past week after I was on
his show it struck me the number
of local radio TV and newspaper
reporters who are doing well
in the field to include those
who have gone on to national
recognition. Many of them are
Hispanics.
One name that comes to mind
is ABC News Reporter John
Quinones who does an ongoing segment, “What would you
do?” In the scenario he tapes
unsuspecting people on hidden
cameras forced to confront racism, rudeness and unacceptable
behavior by those around them to
see if they will say something to
those (actors) who behave badly.
Many viewers here may remember his reporting for ABC
affiliate KSAT-12 back in the
day. A couple of years ago he
returned to San Antonio to actively participate in that year’s
Fiesta. At that time I was able
to photograph him at one of the
after parties.
This year the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists
is honoring him with the Henry
Guerra Lifetime Achievement
Award for Excellence in Journalism for his continued outstanding journalistic work. Recently
he filmed a segment on Cesar
Chavez recalling that his own
parents were migrant workers
who knew Cesar Chavez very
well. The story ended with a
highlighted photo of him with

Chavez in his later years. Like
me, Quinones interviewed Cesar
Chavez years ago.
Another local successful Hispanic Broadcaster is Fox News
Meteorologist Alex Garcia who
was my News Director in Victoria in early 1983 when I was a
reporter there. In the 90s when I
taught at McCollum High School
I had numerous speakers address
some of my speech classes.
Garcia was one of the first
invited speakers who graciously
accepted my invitation to speak
to my students. He encouraged
them to stay in school and get
their diplomas and pursue their
chosen career.
Then there is Vanessa Macias
who besides appearing as a
contestant on “Amazing Race”
in 2012 and in car commercials,
serves as spokeswoman for
various sports organizations. She
also co-hosts her own talk show
in the morning. Two of my previous appearances on Talk Now
SA included her as a guest. I have
also been on Talk Now SA once
with La Prensa Editor-in-Chief
Nina Duran.
Besides serving as Editor-inChief of La Prensa, Duran is
an adjunct instructor with the
Alamo Colleges teaching Mass
Communication, Introduction
to Advertising, Public Relations
and Writing for Radio, TV. She

Another local Hispanic celebrity/reporter is Rita Verreos,
who has completed a number
of stints as a fill-in weather girl
for KSAT-12 a couple of years
ago. She was also a contestant
on the third season of the CBS
“Survivor,” reality show, serves
as Mistress of Ceremonies for
many charity events as well as
appearing in commercials.
San Antonio has a rich legacy
of superb reporters to also include KSAT-12 Reporter Jessie
Degollado who like 2014 recipient John Quinones received
the 2012 SAAHJ Henry Guerra
Lifetime Award in Excellence
in Journalism. In 1982 before
coming here in 1984, she was
the five o’clock co-anchor for
KRGV where I worked as a street
reporter.
Remembering the old adage attributed to Newspaper Columnist
Walter Winchell in 1932: “Be
nice to those you meet on the
way up because you will meet
them on the way down” rings
true. Perhaps we all should take
that to heart.
And as always, what I write is
“Just a Thought.”

The University of Connecticut
women’s basketball team won the
NCAA Women’s Championship,
along with their male counterparts,
against new rivals Notre Dame
University.
The women’s team went 40-0
this season to claim the championship win. But behind every great
team, there is a great coach.
Coach Geno Auriemma is the
mastermind behind the success of
the UConn women. Famous alumni
who played under Auriemma includes WNBA superstars Sue Bird,
Diana Taurasi and Maya Moore.
Auriemma has nine NCAA
basketball championships under
his belt, second most for NCAA
Championship wins all-time, both
men and women combined, just one
behind legendary former UCLA
coach John Wooden.
The former St. Joseph’s and
Virginia University coach knows
winning like the back of his hand.
Auriemma currently has the
highest winning percentage among
all active coaches, men or women
with .869.
He has coached five undefeated
teams and coached a winning streak
crossing two seasons with a total
of 90 wins.
Head coaching since 1985 and
still at the peak level in his coaching, Auriemma was inducted to the
hall of fame in 2006.
The University of Connecticut
has been successful not only because of the talented players they
have but also because of Coach
Geno Auriemma.
He has become a role model for
coaches across America and the
success of his career will never be
overlooked in college basketball

Jr., lanzador estelar del

Kings, fue nombrado padrino
de la temporada de primavera
y verano en Liga Regional
Veteranos Carramán, que este
sábado 12 de abril inaugura su
sexta temporada en el diamante
Colt 45 Baseball Field.
Martinez Jr, de 45 años de
edad, al conocer su designación,
con voz entrecortada, agradeció
al presidente Gonzalo “Chalo”
Carramán por haberlo nombrado
padrino de los beisbolistas
veteranos, honor que estará
compartiendo con su señor padre
William (Guillermo) Martínez Sr.

Spring Cleaning: Making money with your used items

Many of us who work will find it
challenging to de-clutter our homes.
Having worked in the flea market
business for over 12 years and the
many calls we got from first-timers,
we realized that there are many
people who don’t know how easy
it is with to make money from their
own stuff.
However, there are thousands
of people, who have figured it out.
The reality is, it’s not hard; but
it is true it is work. So, as long as
you’re not shy of manual labor and
you’re willing to get rid of some
stuff and turn it into cash. All you
have to do is break it down into
steps.
Step 1. If you have several places
where you have stored your unwanted items, I suggest you set
your sale date for a month away.
You make your goal of the week to
tackle sorting through one section.
When you begin make sure you
have boxes, tape, a large marker and
most importantly either a trash bag
or a trash can.
It’s very important to not over
think it. Designate a section of your
home the area for flea market stuff.
Three decisions you’re going to
make as you process your storage.
You are either going to (a) Keep, (b)
Sell or (c) Throw away your items.
The kept items will stay, The sell
items will go in the box and moved
to the designated area of the home
and of course you’re going to toss
the unwanted stuff. It’s important to
keep in mind that you will want to
keep stuff, you’ll want to give away.
You can set another section of your
home for stuff to give away and
just label it with the person’s name
you’re going to give it to.
Step 2. Decide what day you’d
like to go to the flea market. Make
sure you don’t go alone. The flea
markets are family oriented places,
if you have kids, just take them with
you. In San Antonio, you have many
options. There is: Bussey’s Flea
Market, Eisenhauer Flea Market,
Traders Village, Mi Mercado, Mission Open Air Market, Flea Mart,
Hwy 90 Flea Market, Moursund
Flea Market.
It’s important to understand
which flea market have what type of
customers. What do these customers
look for and does this market cater
to used merchandise? We would get
hundreds of phone calls from people
who wanted to produce arts and
crafts, metal sculptures and food.
Let me address the food because
that was the call we got the most.
Nothing happens in any flea market
without an in-depth conversation
with management first. There are
strict rules and guidelines for preparing and selling foods. Make sure you
understand all the laws and permits
that are necessary to become a food
vendor. I suggest speaking to someone who is already in the restaurant
business and then educating yourself
in classes or researching from the
Health Department.
If you want to develop a food
business, it is going to take time
and money. Nothing is impossible
with hard work and a willingness
to learn.
Arts and crafts are only going to
be good for certain markets, whose
customers appreciate the work of
an artisan. I suggest you do your
homework, start by visiting these
markets and see if you feel like
their items are in line with your
quality of work.
Used Items are going to be good
for markets that rent daily spaces.
I suggest making a phone call and
narrowing down your search based
on what you’re told, then visiting
and seeing if your items fit what
you see and checking the prices to
see what you can expect to make.
Another thing to note is price
tags. It is not necessary to place
price tags on your items. Price tags
serve as a way of limiting your
interactions with people. It’s best
to do your research, take into consideration the brand and condition
and then seeing people’s reactions
to your wanted price and lowering
it if you’d like to just get rid of it.
Step 3. Get plenty of sleep. Go
to the bank and get change approximately $50 worth of change.
If you have items priced at $.25
then you’ll want coins. It you
don’t have any item lower than
$1, then about $10 to $20 in $1’s
and $20 in 5’s and $30 in $10’s.
Keep your money larger bills in a
separate pocket.
Be ready for the chaos. In the
used item markets, it’s all about
who gets there first. Buyers can
usually tell if they want to see
what’s in your vehicle. They might
ask you, how much something
costs while you're in line waiting to
pay to get in. Sometimes they will
even help you unload. This is why
it’s best to not go alone.
Be ready to haggle. Be ready to
bargain. Savvy buyers are going
to group items together and ask
you what your total price is for

everything. They will be looking at items and setting them
aside as they gather up items
like are interested in, until an
agreeable price is reached. It
would really help you to have
someone who speaks Spanish.
If not, most Spanish speaking
buyers do understand English.
Just take your time. Chances are
there is a nearby vendor who
will help watch your things for
you or help you translate. Also
nearby vendors can be a great
source of support and change.
If you find yourself needing
to make change, most markets
will have a place to provide
change for their vendors, free of
charge. This is a good question
to ask before you get to their
market.
Some flea markets like in
the case of Mission Open Air
Market will allow you to leave
your drivers license, go sell
your items and then pay by
noon when you’ve made your
entry fee back. You need to be
sure, your items will sell.
There are some flea market
vendors who sell regularly
as a way to supplement their
income. Selling at a flea market can make the difference in
many people’s lives.
Over the years, vendors confess that selling at a flea market has afforded them condominiums or their kids were put

to a garage sale selling at a flea
market can mean a difference

de ciclistas partieron de Ela
Austin Community Center,
ubicado en el Eastside, para
visitar jardines cultivados
por iniciativa de los vecinos
en diferentes barrios de la
ciudad en el segundo año de
CicloVerde.
A partir del impulso que
la administración del alcalde
Julián Castro ha dado al
ejercicio físico, con la creación
de San Antonio Fitness
Council y el establecimiento
de estaciones con bicicletas
rentables, se ha incrementado
entre el público el interés por la
cultura física.
Un claro ejemplo es el
tour anual CicloVerde que
armónicamente combina dos
actividades: la pasión por el
ciclismo y el cuidado de los
jardines esparcidos por toda
la ciudad, los cuales son
cultivados por grupos de
vecinos, particularmente adultos
mayores.
En este proyecto se tienen
registrados 83 jardines
diseminados en todos los rumbos
de la ciudad.

propiedades privadas, terrenos
de la municipalidad o centros
comunitarios.
En este segundo año de
CicloVerde participaron más
de 100 personas en forma
individual, familias o miembros
de clubes ciclistas de todos los
rumbos de la ciudad.
En esta ocasión participaron
más de 100 ciclistas
individualmente o miembros
de clubes, quienes visitaron
varios jardines como muestra
de reconocimiento y estímulo
a las personas que dedican
tiempo para cultivar flores y
plantas, estableciendo un cercana
relación de amistad a fin de que
sientan que CicloVerde es un
medio adecuado para mostrar
su trabajo.
Un ejemplo de esta visita
sucedió en el jardín que cultivan
los residentes de Palacio Del Sol,
ubicado en Frio y Martin St. que
es una residencia para personas
de la tercera edad quienes tienen
gran interés para que el amplio
parque que tienen dentro de
este complejo habitacional
tenga un elemento de confort.

El asesino silencioso

La noche estaba fría, como
suelen ser las del otoño en
Toronto, Canadá. Dentro de
la casa el ambiente era grato.
Había habido una rica cena, con
diez personas alrededor de la
mesa familiar. Habían disfrutado
juntos de un buen programa de
televisión, y ya era hora de ir a
la cama. Así que todos —padre,
madre y ocho hijos, entre los
once y los veinticinco años de
edad— se retiraron a dormir.
Encendieron el calentador
de gas, apagaron las luces, se
arrebujaron entre sus cobijas, y
se durmieron. Hasta ahí, todo fue
normal. Pero jamás volvieron a
despertarse. El gas del calentador,
asesino silencioso, dio cuenta de
los diez durmientes. La familia
entera pasó de un sueño al otro
sin sentir nada.
Muchos son los casos
registrados de personas que
mueren por el gas de los
calentadores. Este caso en el
Canadá es impresionante por
tratarse de una familia entera,
una familia seguramente
amorosa y unida porque todos
vivían juntos, incluso los hijos
mayores de dieciocho años.
Pero el gas se los llevó a todos
sin darles tiempo de reaccionar
o defenderse.
La característica más
ominosa que tienen estos gases,
especialmente el monóxido
de carbono, es que primero
producen un adormecimiento
agradable, una sensación
placentera de tranquilidad, de
serenidad, de paz. Pero luego
que adormecen a sus víctimas,
las matan sin piedad.
Por esa característica del tal
llamado asesino silencioso, al
gas letal lo podemos comparar
con el espíritu del mal que reina
en este mundo. Es el espíritu
que comienza adormeciendo
la conciencia. Produce una
sensación de bienestar, de calma.
Da la impresión de que todo está
bien, que la vida es buena y hay
que disfrutarla. Y las víctimas
se adormecen. Su conciencia
entra en un estupor donde ya no
reacciona con nada, y cuando
la víctima se da cuenta, ya está
atrapada.
Así es como toma auge el mal
uso de las drogas, la inmoralidad
sexual, la irreverencia, el
materialismo y el descreimiento.
Estos gases mortales se han
infiltrado en la sociedad
occidental y la tienen ya en sus
garras.
Podríamos decir: ¿Qué
importa? Lo que importa es
que, sin saber por qué, sufrimos
consecuencias desastrosas que
poco a poco destruyen nuestra
vida.
Pero todavía hay tiempo para
reaccionar. El único remedio
contra el gas letal es el aire puro,
el oxígeno vital y renovador. Así
mismo, el único remedio contra
el adormecimiento espiritual
es el Espíritu de Jesucristo.
Abramos nuestro corazón a
Cristo. Su doctrina es nuestra
salvación, y su persona, nuestro
Salvador.

Each year, millions visit the
Vietnam Veterans Memorial,
which honors the millions who
served their country during the
Vietnam War.
Tens of thousands gave their
lives during the many years of
conflict and their names are etched
into the black granite.
The Wall That Heals allows
local communities to pay their
respects to the over 58,000 men
and women who made the ultimate
sacrifice.
The traveling memorial is being
hosted at Central Catholic High
School April 10-13. An opening
ceremony on April 10 featured
State Representative Jose Menendez, ’87, as master of ceremonies.
Lt. Col. John Blevins ‘57 (Ret.)
was the main speaker. Col. Blevins
was shot down and was a Prison of
War in Vietnam at Ho Chi Minh
from September 1966 until March
1973.
Also speaking at the ceremony
was Paul Venzor, ’04, of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.
“We are honored and humbled
to host The Wall That Heals at
Central Catholic High School. Our
school and city are proud of our
military and we support our veterans,” said Father Richard Wosman,
SM, president of Central Catholic
High School. “We hope that host-
ing an exhibition such as this can
represent a small thank you to all
our service men and women who
have given the ultimate sacrifice
for our country.”
The opening event also featured a gun salute, the souding of
“TAPS,” the laying of wreaths, and
moment of silence.
Also in attendance at the gathering was Peter Holt, owner of the
San Antonio Spurs, who is also a
Vietnam veteran.
“The Wall That Heals transcends the Vietnam War to help
our great nation renew its relationship with veterans of all wars,”
said Jan C. Scruggs, founder and
president of Vietnam Veterans
Memorial Foundation.

En 1982, cuando ya había
cumplido treinta y siete
años y ya había lanzado al
mercado nueve discos con
envidiable éxito, el famoso
cantautor español José Luis
Perales grabó el disco “Entre
el agua y el fuego” en el que
interpreta esta canción que
lleva por título “Por amor”. Y
sin embargo, a diferencia de
muchos artistas de su talla, ya
tenía fama también de llevar
una vida recatada.
“Trato de ser fiel a la
educación que recibí —había
explicado Perales en una
entrevista dos años antes—:
las enseñanzas religiosas, la
afición a leer el evangelio
y la Biblia, todo eso sigue
influyendo”. Lo cierto es
que esa formación bíblica
influyó en su canción “Amor
sin límite”, inspirada en el
famoso “capítulo del amor”
de San Pablo en su Primera
Carta a los Corintios, así
como influyó en esta canción.
Pues fue en ese mismo pasaje
bíblico del sufrido apóstol
que Perales aprendió que “Por

de teléfono y número de facsímile si lo tiene; (2) el nombre del solicitante y número de permiso; (3) la
declaración “[yo/nosotros] solicito una audiencia de un caso impugnado”; (4) una descripción específica
de como se vería adversamente afectado por la solicitud y emisiones atmosféricas de la planta de manera
que no es común para el publico en general; (5) la ubicación y distancia de su propiedad con relación a la
planta; y (6) una Descripción de como emplea la propiedad la cual puede ser impactada por la planta. Si la
petición la hace un grupo o asociación, el miembro o miembros que tienen derecho a solicitar una audiencia
y los intereses que el grupo o la asociación busca proteger, también se deben identificar. También puede
presentar los ajustes que propone hacer a la solicitud/permiso que pueden satisfacer sus preocupaciones.
Las peticiones para una audiencia de caso impugnado se deben presentar por escrito dentro de 15 día
después de aviso, a la Oficina del Funcionario Jefe a la dirección a continuación.
Si se registra oportunamente una petición para audiencia de caso impugnado, el director ejecutivo enviará
la solicitud y cualquier petición para una audiencia de caso impugnado a los comisionados de TCEQ para su
consideración durante la reunión programada de la Comisión. Excepto si la solicitud se refiere directamente

Huskies prove it’s no CONN-test in Arlington

The past three NCAA Men’s
Basketball National Championships in the state of Texas
have been won by the UConn
Huskies.
In 2004 they captured the
crown in San Antonio, in 2010
it was Houston and this year they
won it all in Arlington.
UConn beat the Kentucky
Wildcats led by its class of freshman phenoms 60-54 at AT&T
Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Shabazz Napier led the way
in scoring with 22 points and
earned the game’s MVP honors. This was his second NCAA
Championship with the program.

Tip Top Cafe: Golden seafood

Would it be safe to say one isn’t
a San Antonian until they’ve eaten
at Tip Top Cafe?
Located at 2814 Fredericksburg Rd, DeWese’s Tip Top Cafe
has been a local favorite since
the golden days. Known for its
all-American comfort food, their
chicken fried steak, juicy steaks,
onion rings, hamburgers and pies
are some of the best in town.
As popular as it is, many aren’t
aware of the seafood served at
the cafe.
With the Lenten season still
around, now would be a great time
to check out the homestyle seafood
at this nostalgic eatery.
There are few places in town
that can truly say they serve jumbo
shrimp, and Tip Top is one of
them. Unlike many eateries, Tip
Top’s fried shrimp are large, buttery and crunchy. Breaded and
cooked to golden perfection, many
specialty seafood restaurants cannot compare to these shrimp.
About the size of my palm, it
is easy to get full on two or three
shrimp. The only other place where
I have seen such large shrimp is

shrimp, I just go to Tip Top to get
my fill.
A Tip Top seafood platter is a
generous serving, and comes with
the best of all worlds: fried fish,
oysters, shrimps and scallops.
Tip Top is what introduced me
to my love of scallops. Meaty,
tender and luscious, scallops are
succulent little nuggets of flavor
(there is no other way to describe
them). Seemingly odd sounding
to eat, scallops are a great source
of protein.
Broiled tilapia is another sea-
food lunch special at Tip Top.
Seasoned perfectly with lemon
pepper, it comes in a generous
portion and served with the sides
of the day, which vary from bread
pudding, collard greens to potatoes
au gratin.
There are other delicious vegetarian options.
The iconic tower of onion rings
is always a crowd pleaser. Hearty
vegetable soup is an affordable,
tasty and healthy alternative and
costs less than $2 a bowl. Pair it
up with a house salad for a pleasant
experience.
While seemingly unhealthy, the
homemade ranch dressing at this
eatery is so good; it can be used as a
dip for everything from the French
fries to the crackers.
Lent-safe foods aside, everything
else at Tip Top is good. Using the
same recipes from 70 years ago, it’s
no wonder the place is such a hit.
With the friendly staff, homestyle food and iconic cafe look of
the 30s; being at Tip Top is like
setting foot on a time machine to
simpler times.
Be aware, this vintage eatery only
takes cash, so be sure to visit an

Rey Feo meets his mission
to educate the children

There’s more to the rein of a
Rey Feo than going to events
and schools during Fiesta — the
men behind the curtain.
It’s here where the Rey Feo
Consejo Educational Foundation
and its 129 members step up to
the plate.
The “rank and file” is described as a diverse group made
up of former Reyes Feo, in addition to local leaders that range
from accountants, attorneys,
bankers, doctors and businessmen.
“What they do throughout the
year, we raise money for two
reasons. One is to help promote
education,” Foundation Regent
Baldemar “Walter” Serna told
La Prensa.
“Rey Feo visits anywhere from
75 to 100 schools a year during
the year, so we help out with that
endeavor by raising money to
help defer some of the costs of
getting to those schools,” Serna
added.
Serna was quick to point out
the foundation does not distribute
scholarships.
What it does is raise scholarship money and gives it to the
Rey Feo Scholarship Committee
so it can distribute the proceeds.
Those are the two things the
foundation does: promote education and raise scholarship money.
Last year the foundation
gave the scholarship committee
$60,000.
That’s what Fiesta de Los
Reyes is all about. A 10-day
festival held during Fiesta and
the only free event in San Antonio with over $170,000 spent on
top-name musicians. In addition
to the more than 300 bands, food
and drink booths make up the
rest of the landscape at Market
Square.
“When you come out here and
buy a taco or you buy a beer here
at Market Square, you’re helping
promote education here in San
Antonio,” Serna said. “It’s a
great opportunity and lots of fun;
we enjoy doing it. As a result,
we’re able to raise more money
to promote education and raise
scholarship money as well.”
To put it all into perspective
and how the Rey Feo Consejo
Educational Foundation completes the puzzle, the process
starts with the Rey Feo. What
the Rey Feo Scholarship Committee does, under the umbrellas
of Tom Sandoval and LULAC
Council No. 2, is raise money
from the two candidates who are
Reyes Feo.
This past year it was Jimmy
Green and Jon Gary Herrera who
each raised $200,000 the Rey Feo
Scholarship Committee raised a
total of $400,000.
What the Consejo Educational
Foundation does is supplement
the Rey Feo Scholarship Committee. The foundation helps Rey
Feo in its education promotion
mission and the void is filled by
helping Rey Feo to come and go
as he promotes education.
“That involves going from
75 to 100 schools every year,
spreading the message of education. We go to mainly elementary
schools,” Serna said. “We went
to a few high schools. My era and
Mr. (Bill) Drain sitting across
from me did that as well, too.”
Getting the money to enable
the Rey Feo to complete his
mission is something Vice Regent Bill Drain takes seriously,
as Fiesta de Los Reyes is in its
fourth year at Market Square. He
feels they’ve been able to make it
a little bit bigger, a little better, as
well as a family event, and while
parking may be a problem it’s
well worth the walk.
“I don’t know of any event like
Fiesta, because our town comes
together,” Drain explained. “We
party responsibly, but, if you got
to walk a mile to come in, you’re
gonna come sit back and hear
the best music. We have the best
food vendors. The Taco Queens
are out here; these people put it
on the line. I’ll rival their food
with any restaurant in town. So
from good food to good drinks
to goods music, with family and
friends, this is the place to be.”
The 10-day festival is a chance
to interact with the people of San
Antonio. Drain is looking at over
500,000 people taking part over
Fiesta to enjoying a lot of fun and
family time and it gives them a
chance to spread their message
collectively.
“We exist to get kids through
college. We want them to stay
in school, we encourage it. With
a 50 percent dropout rate in San
Antonio, we’re killing our city
because we’re not educating
the city,” Drain said. “The most
important thing we can do is to
encourage them to stay in school,
support these kids and give them
a hand up going to college.”
Over the 10 days of Fiesta de
Los Reyes you’ll get to sample a
variety of music. Drain added it’s
the best around because Grammy
Award winner Henry Brun handpicked the groups you’ll hear at
Market Square.
“He’s got the best of the best
from Tejano to Conjunto,” Drain
said. “We got some rock out here,
gospel music on Sunday. We hit
everyone’s name; you’ll hear
everything from top to bottom. If
it’s a main headline artist in the
Tejano world, they’ll be here.”
Security is no problem. They
have the best of the best out here:
the San Antonio Police Department, Drain explained.
“We have five stages. Two
main stages, one underneath the
highway, that’s a main stage and
the other on San Saba. Three
other stages will be in the plaza,
a total of five going from 10 a.m.
until midnight and one o’clock
on the last Saturday,” Drain said.
“With the money raised Rey
Feo Jimmy Green’s message on
education will get out to everyone,” Drain added.
With the city’s embarrassing
dropout rate, the effort to get
children educated can only be
helped, he explained
When it was just the Reyes Feo
they went out there and put it on
the line for six months to raise
their money. Now it’s a $200,000
minimum.
“So we all had a vested interest, because we gave a lot of our
self, our family time, our friend’s
time to do that and when it’s all
over we still want to contribute,”
Drain said. “Like Walter says,
we want to continue on and we
want to boost the program up
higher because the more we can
do collectively the more we can
give out citywide.”

sea una mejor pareja, un mejor
salario, un mayor descuento o un
mejor puesto. Quienes piden más,
¡logran más!
No tengas miedo a soñar con
metas exuberantes. Tus resultados en la vida irán en proporción
directa a tu nivel de expectativas.

Be afraid of the big bad
wolf in episode three

The third episode of Telltale
games “The Wolf Among Us”
released this week with much anticipation from fans.
Snow and Bigby continue the
search for the killer of the Fables in
Fabletown. Following the ending
of episode 2 where Bigby finds evidence that points at Ichabod Crane
for the murders, this episode is spent
entirely searching Crane who is on
the run.
A really nice touch that is thrown
into episode three is the bonding
of Snow and Bigby. The two have
worked together long enough to start
learning more about each other’s
pasts.
The mystery hits a boiling point
in episode 3’s finale that reveals
Bigby’s true form as the big bad
wolf, and introduces a few new
characters including the psychotic
Bloody Mary and the mysterious
“Crooked Man.”
The episode is titled “The
Crooked Mile” and it is a trail that
Snow and Bigby obviously have
traveled to cross paths with the yet
unseen “Crooked Man.”
Although the identity of the
“Crooked Man” still eludes us,
the Mother Goose poem may shed
some light on his identity or at least
something to do with his character:
“There was a crooked man and
he walked a crooked mile
He found a crooked sixpence
upon a crooked stile
Bigby finally reveals his true form when he is pushed too far.

caught a crooked mouse
And they all lived together in a
crooked house
He met a crooked woman and he
found a crooked preach
They had a crooked marriage on

no worries and no fears
Until one day the crooked wife
upset the crooked man
He yelled a crooked yell and then
he hit her and ran
The crooked man came again at
the stroke of twelve
That was when their crooked life
became a living hell
There was a crooked man and he

And when he killed his wife and
kids he smiled a crooked smile”
The poem is as bleak as the
situation that Bigby finds himself
in at the close of episode 3. Telltale
games excel at the art of story telling,
consequential decision-making and
cliffhangers, and episode 3 has all of
them in droves.
The series so far has been as
genius and hard hitting as its predecessor, “The Walking Dead.” And
with each episode getting more
immersive then the last it looks
like it’s headed for a doozy of an
ending once we get to the fifth and
final episode.

Forming the musical ensemble of the San Antoniobased, “slop pop” trio, The
Rich Hands, are singer and
guitarist Cody Mauser, bassist
Matt Gonzalez and drummer
Nicholas Ivarra.
What is “slop pop” you ask?
“I would say we’re a little
bit of everything. We try not
to classify ourselves as much
as possible,” Ivarra said, the
band’s drummer.
“We just play sloppy rockn-roll. We’re not all super…
great musicians we tend to have
a really good time on stage so
a lot of the times we mess up
and you know, it’s all in fun and
we have no issue doing that,”
Ivarra added.
The band, who released an
LP last year entitled “Dreamers”, has gone at it again and is
expected to release their new
LP next month titled “Out Of
My Head.”
Tracking back to their inspirations from 70s bands, “Out
Of My Head” will be poppy and
live with a mix of calm vibes.
The songs will range from slow
to poppy and a little rock-nroll in between, portraying the
diversity of the band.
“The majority of it is going to
be like that,” said Ivarra.
“We have a couple slower
songs, a couple southern rockn-roll songs, and then you
have our same old poppy stuff.
We just kinda wanted to add a
couple more elements to this
new album rather than just having a straight bubble gum-like
pop record,” he added.
“Out of My Head” opens up
with a soft yet catchy song,
titled “All Over Me” and ends
with a bang, “So Fine”, that
leans towards a southern rockn-roll feel.
Ivarra also said that the band
was working on their third album and anticipated to release
it by the end of this year.
The Rich Hands played an
array of shows at this year’s
South By South West Music
and Film Festival in Austin.
Next for the band is a tour
this year to promote “Out Of
My Head.” However, before
heading out anywhere, it’s only
right to start off the madness
here at home.
The boys will have their
EP release party May 23 at
the Limelight for “Out Of My
Head.” The album’s expected
to make its debut May 6.

Estoy muy preocupada
porque le gusto a mi jefe y
es casado. Soy una chica de
23 años y comencé a trabajar
después de graduarme, en enero
de este año. Desde mis inicios
en esta compañía no he podido
dejar de sentir que le gusto a
mi jefe, y además de que no me
gusta, él es un hombre casado
mucho mayor que yo.
Yo comencé a darme cuenta
porque cada vez notaba más
su preferencia hacia mí, pero
ahora es aún peor porque ya
me pide que coma con él o que
lo espere para cerrar la oficina
juntos, y si no lo hago entonces al
día siguiente me pide más trabajo
y me humilla frente a los demás
empleados. Esto solo pasa por un
rato porque después de un rato se
le pasa y luego vuelve a pedirme
que lo espere o que lo acompañe
por un café o hasta a comer.
He sentido que es una obsesión
lo que siente por mí y se me hace
muy desagradable. Además me ha
comenzado a dar miedo porque yo
vivo sola y él tiene mi dirección
y toda mi información, por lo que
en el momento que quiera podría
ir a buscarme.
No sé qué hacer, no puedo
perder mi trabajo porque necesito
hacer mis pagos pero al mismo tiempo no quiero seguir ahí
porque ya ni puedo dormir del
estrés que me causa pensar en él.
Querida jovencita estresada:
Gracias por escribirnos y por dar
a conocer tu caso, pues es tan solo
uno de millones que no se reportan. Quiero decirte que lo primero
que debes de hacer es hablar y no
callarte y guardar ese problema
que aunque ahora es pequeño, ya
te incomoda y pudiera terminar en
algo muy desagradable.
Te recomiendo que si puedes
utilices tu celular o una grabadora
y así grabes el momento en que te
insinúe algo. Esto te servirá para
que cuentes con una evidencia y
así puedas presentarla a alguien
que se encuentre más arriba del
corporativo en el que trabajas.
Si él es quien está a cargo de
toda la empresa y no hay alguien
más, entonces haz lo mismo pero
repórtalo a las autoridades.
Por otro lado, te aconsejo que
comiences a buscar otro lugar
en donde puedas trabajar porque
este tipo de situaciones te pueden
arruinar la vida. Necesitas buscar
un lugar en donde el ambiente de
trabajo no altere tu salud, tu sueño
y tu manera de vivir.
No tengas miedo de reportar
este caso, recuerda que las autoridades están para ayudarte, y si no
lo haces nadie se enterará jamás.
