Everyone deals with life’s
ups and downs differently.
Some people drink, others
workout, some meditate, and
several of us eat. Ever since
I was a little girl, food has
comforted me. When I accidentally hurt myself, my mom
would give me a spoonful
of sugar. I remember biting
into the crystals and smiling… forgetting that I injured
myself.
Food does more than fill
our stomachs -- it makes us
feel better physically and
emotionally, this is called
emotional eating. According
to the University of Texas Counseling and Mental
Health Center, there are a few
ways to detect the difference
between emotional eating and
physical eating:
1. Emotional hunger comes
on suddenly; physical hunger
occurs gradually
2. With emotional hunger
you crave specific foods,
such as pizza or ice cream,
and only that food will meet
your need. When you’re actually hungry, you’re open to
options
3. Emotional hunger feels
like it needs to be satisfied
instantly with the food you
crave; physical hunger can
wait
4. Even when you’re full,
if you’re eating to satisfy an
emotional need, you’re more
likely to keep eating. When

you’re eating because you’re
hungry, you’re more likely to
stop when you’re full
5. Emotional eating can
leave behind feelings of guilt;
eating when you are physically hungry does not
The Mayo Foundation for
Medical Education and Research (MFMER) states that
some foods have seemingly
addictive qualities. For example, when you eat enticing
foods, such as chocolate, your
body releases mood and satisfaction-elevating hormones.
That “reward” may reinforce
a preference for foods that are
most closely associated with
specific feelings. Related to
this is the simple fact that
the pleasure of eating offsets
negative emotions.
Try keeping a log of the
times you binge and determine what set you off. Were
you hurt, angry or possibly
lonely? Getting to the source
of the problem can help you
get through the next temptation.
If it’s anger or hurt feelings
towards someone, try confronting that person. Sometimes, writing your emotions
on paper can help clear the air.
Sit down and write everything
that is bothering you –even if
you don’t send it to anyone,
it’s a great release.
If loneliness is your problem, get involved with people
that need you. I’ve found myself lonely and a wise person
once told me to find someone
who needed me more than I
needed myself. Try volunteering at a nursing home.
According to the National
Center for Health Statistics,
more than 50 percent of nursing home residents don’t have
close relatives, and 46 percent have no living children
–which is why life is very
lonely for them. Remember,
they’ve all been there and
know how hard life can be…
You’d be surprised how much
they can help.

La cantante mexicana
Anahí, está de regreso a la
escena musical, despues de
tomar un receso luego de que
el grupo RBD -del cual ella
formaba parte- se separó con
el propósito que cada integrante siguiera su camino. La
cantante se dedicó a trabajar
en el disco que le daría continuidad a su carrera.
Como una probadita, ella
presentó su tema “Mí Delirio”, pero vaya sorpresa que
se llevó la cantante, cuando
el tema se convirtió en el
número uno en ventas electrónicas, razón por la cual se
apresuró a terminar su disco
y poner el tema “Mi Delirio”
como primer sencillo.
En plena promoción de su
disco la cantante nos concedió
una entrevista para ponernos
al día con sus planes a corto
plazo que dan inicio con el
lanzamiento mundial de su
nueva producción. Mismo
que contendrá once canciones
y es producido por Gil Cerezo
y Ulises Lozano ambos integrantes del grupo Kinky.
“Estoy feliz y orgullosa
del trabajo que estamos haci-
endo, ha sido muy fuerte en
trabajar día y noche todos los
días para poder salir pronto
con este disco, porque yo no
quería dejar pasar el tiempo.
Cuando acabó RBD era muy
claro que yo tenía que retomar mi carrera solita, la que
llevo construyendo por más
de veinte años. Yo creo que
era necesario darle a mis fans
el regreso. Era como decirles
que aquí estoy, ahora solita,
mostrándoles nuevamente lo
que un día vieron nacer todos,
cuando yo era muy chiquita.
Por eso estoy feliz y contenta
de hacer por fin mi propia
letra, estar metiéndome hasta
en la música del disco con
los productores que son los
chicos del grupo Kinky. Estoy creciendo muchísimo
como artista. Este disco fue
un trabajo del cual me siento
muy orgullosa y espero que
todos lo quieran tener en sus
manos”, dijo una muy emocionada Anahí.
Con más de dos décadas
de carrera artística que ha
dividió en televisión, cine y
la música, la cantante tiene
tantos admiradores alrededor
del mundo que ni ella misma
se imagina cuantos. Todos

to life after closing time) fight
an evil group with a nefarious
plan. Special features include:
Two commentary tracks, a
behind-the-scenes featurette,
deleted scenes, a gag reel and
an alternate ending.
DOG OF THE WEEK
“Terminator: Salvation”
Seriously, the only good thing
about “Terminator: Salvation”
is the viral video that made its
way around the interwebs earlier
this year of Christian Bale going
ballistic on the lighting guy. The
film’s plot is convoluted, and it
doesn’t follow the mythology created by James Cameron in the first
two films. Frankly, with a director
like McG, did you really expect
anything other than a bunch of
explosions and choppy edits?
“Terminator: Salvation” is so bad,
it makes “Transformers 2” look
like a masterpiece of cinema.

Bitter sweet mural blessing for San Anto

In a 2008 interview with La
Prensa Newspaper, David Blancas, lead muralist of San Anto
Cultural Arts’ latest mural, said it
is good for artists to get involved
in community art projects rather
than encircling themselves with
a particular group of artists in a
small studio somewhere.
When it comes to public art that exhibits multi-media
details like paint, lighting, tiling,
sculpture, etc., murals serve to
beautify the community, and in
this case, resurrecting a wall that
was dead with neglect.
“These murals don’t belong
to the artists, they belong to the
community and the city as a
whole,” said Blancas.
Last Saturday, San Anto Cultural Arts and Father Marty Elsner of Our Lady of Guadalupe
Church blessed San Anto’s 37th
mural, “La Musica de San Anto,”
honoring the music and memories
of legendary musicians such as
Randy Garibay, Rocky Morales,
Lydia Mendoza, Eva Garza, Clifford Scott, Felix Villareal, Doug
Sahm, Valerio Longoria, Rosita
Fernandez and Manny Castillo.
As drummer for local band
Snowbyrd and executive director
of San Anto Cultural Arts, Castillo’s passion was music, art and
community involvement.

pretty much the catalyst for San
Anto Cultural Arts, born as the
Inner City Mural Project in 1993
with artists Cruz Ortiz and Juan
Ramos. Since then, San Anto has
taken other multi-media avenues
with El Placazo Newspaper and
the San Anto Cultural Arts Video
Oral History and Documentary
Program.
“The Mural Program is geared
toward fostering the talent that
already exists in our community,
giving artists that might not have
the opportunity or the outlet,”
said Blancas.

the West Commerce Street overpass, about erecting a mural on
her wall, he jumped at the chance
to honor the memories of legendary San Antonio musicians at the
gate of the West Side. Crews were
halfway through the project when
their executive director lost his
battle to cancer.
“I just want [our community]
to know that this has been quite a
journey, and it makes me wonder
if the sense of urgency Manny had
to complete this project was because somehow he knew, within
the essence of himself, that he
would make it up on that wall,”
said Wagely with tears in her eyes
and a choked throat at the mural’s
recent blessing ceremony.
At about 150 feet in length and
18.5 feet tall, it is San Anto’s
largest mural to date and the last
mural erected by Castillo—now
immortalized in the center of it
all.
“Manny’s birthday is November 23, so we purposely decided
that if this mural was going to
be blessed in the fall we might
as well do it in honor of his
birthday,” said Heather Eichling,
current executive director for San
Anto Cultural Arts. “This is a
great way to celebrate his life.”
When asked to say a few words
at the mural blessing ceremony,
Eva Garza, depicted in all her glory, stands tall above a candle-lit
altar depiction. A portrait of Wagley’s mother, once a dance hall

Juan Ramos, local artist and
musician, paused for a moment
to reflect on how wonderful the
representations of Castillo and the
other musicians will stand on that
wall for future generations, thanks
to San Anto Cultural Arts.
“What you have here are people
who care about the history of their
own community, preserving it
and passing it on,” said Ramos.
“You have to take ownership of
your history and share it because
if you don’t preserve your own
history nobody else is going to
do it for you. I’m really happy to
know that this is going to be here
for a long time.”
Each larger than life depiction
of the 10 musicians represented
honor the time period of when
they were at their highest, influential points in their careers,
along with fictional flyers portrayed in the background.
Upon blessing the artwork, Fr.
Elsner said we must thank God
for everything this mural gives us,
even down to the vivid colors that
have given this wall a new life.
“We look at this mural and
say, ‘My God, look at all the
good things you give us through
this,’” said Fr. Elsner. “It brings
us color, we thank God. It brings
us music, we thank God. It brings
us art, we thank God. It brings
affection and kindness.”
Fr. Elsner said we need to also
thank God for the people that
this mural blessing has brought
together, those who might not be
artist, but affirm and encourage
the arts.
“You are the living mural…
you sing, you dance and you create,” said Fr. Elsner as he invited
all the children in attendance to
line up against the mural wall as
he poured holy water into their
hands, asking them to spread it on
the wall as they pray, “Thank you
God for these good things.”

Los Amigos Invisibles y Plastilina Mosh: representantes de la buena música

La música es el lenguaje
universal con el cual todos
nos comunicamos, ya que
para todo momento hay siempre una canción. Últimamente las fusiones musicales
han sido una forma de dar a
conocer los ritmos a públicos
diferentes.
Un grupo que ha basado
su carrera en una conjunción
de ritmos son Los Amigos
Invisibles quienes le han
dado un toque rejuvenecedor al rock mezclándolo con
Jazz y Funky, que le dan a
su música, un toque muy
original.
Originarios de Venezuela
pero residiendo en la ciudad
de Nueva York, Los Amigos
Invisibles recorren América
latina llevando sus canciones.
En una de sus presentaciones
fuímos testigos de su ex-
celente forma de alborotar
al público con su original
estilo.
Su presentación fue un
regalo para los fanáticos del
rock. Más que un concierto
fue en una batalla de bandas donde se enfrentaron a
Plastilina Mosh un popular
grupo de rock originario de
Monterrey, México.
Titulado “Sound Clash”
el evento se convirtió en un
campo de guerra donde el
único vencedor fue el público, quien disfrutó de ambas
bandas sobre el escenario
echándole todas las energías
por complacerlos.
“Es mucho más interesante
que una batalla de las bandas,
para los dos grupos ha sido
una experiencia muy bonita.
Somos amigos desde hace tiempo y
veníamos
plati-
cando que necesitábamos
hacer algo juntos. Es un espectáculo que ojalá no se lo
pierdan porque es Plastilina
Mosh tocando las canciones
de Los Amigos Invisibles
y es algo muy interesante”,
dijo Julio Briceño vocalista
de Los Amigos Invisibles.
El grupo venezolano celebraba la nominación al Latin
GRAMMY en la categoría
Mejor Álbum de Música
Alternativa por su disco “Comercial”, premio del cual
se hicieron acreedores en la
pasada edición que se realizó
en Las Vegas.
“Lo bonito es que te reconozcan, hay gente que
le resta importancia a una
premiación como los Latin
GRAMMY. Para nosotros
es muy bonito que la música
de nosotros se escuche a esos
niveles, que de tantas bandas
que han sacado discos y tocado, nosotros estemos dentro
de esos cinco que este año se
les tomó en cuenta. Cuando
uno está por sacar el disco y
cuando finalmente sale a la
venta, uno dice a veces que
no quiere saber más de ese
disco. En realidad es cuando
apenas empieza el verdadero
trabajo con el disco. Ver que
la academia te reconozca en
este momento es muy agradable porque vamos por buen
camino, quiere decir que no
lo estamos haciendo mal”,
comento Briceño.
Los Amigos Invisibles son
un grupo con más de una
década de trabajo, por eso
no basan su futuro en los
premios que reciben aunque
siempre los agradecen.
“Nosotros no trabajamos
basado en los premios, lo
que hacemos es trabajar y
dar lo mejor de nosotros,
por ejemplo, en el disco que
tenemos en la actualidad.
Después nos meteremos a
grabar otro nuevo disco, Los
Amigos Invisibles se dedican
a trabajar en la música que
nos gusta y a hacer discos;
ese es nuestro proyecto de
vida”, dijo Briceño.
Por su parte el retador fue
el grupo Plastilina Mosh,
los integrantes se mostraron
contentos de regalarle a sus
fanáticos una noche muy
original. El grupo regiomontano alborotó a los presentes
con cada una de sus interpretaciones.
“Nos sentimos contentos
de haber sido elegidos por
Los Amigos Invisibles, somos buenos amigos desde
hace tiempo. Siempre es
padre el podernos juntar en
alguna ciudad y montar las
canciones juntos, poder tocar las canciones de ellos y
viceversa. Nos invitaron por
que Los Amigos Invisibles
habían conseguido esa oportunidad y les preguntaron
cuál era la banda con la que
querían competir y ellos nos
escogieron a nosotros”, nos
dijo Jonás Pérez integrante
de Plastilina Mosh.
La agrupación ha sido reconocida a nivel internacional por su música, ellos se
mostraron orgullosos de sus
paisanos por que cuando tocan en Estado Unidos reciben
el apoyo.
“La verdad a mí me gusta
Estados Unidos para ir a
exponer nuestra música, es
chido ir allá a tocar para los
latinos. Pero también cuando
tocamos en otras ciudades,
va gente anglosajona a vernos, está muy bien porque
ese país lo que tiene es diversidad y a nosotros nos gusta
tocar para diferente gente.
Aparte de exponer nuestra
música vamos a aprender de
otra gente, vamos a mostrar
nuestra música pero también aprendemos al mismo
tiempo”, expresó Pérez.

Con plena confianza, aseguró, “creo que a la gente tal

escribo mis letras, nadie me
dice lo que tengo que cantar.
A la gente le parecerá mas autentico; a mi me parece más
autentico por eso ahora estoy
muy feliz y sintiendo que
crezco mucho como artista”.
Durante la entrevista, Anahí
nos dio a entender que la libertad para escoger sus letras
le dan la oportunidad de expresarse totalmente cosa que
no hacía cuando pertenecía al
grupo RBD.
“El artista tiene que sentir
realmente lo que está cantando, tal vez en RBD si me
tocaba la suerte de que las
canciones que me tocaba cantar a mi sola me llegaran pues
que buena suerte y si no pues

ni modo, porque esas me tocaban y ya. La diferencia es
que ahora yo puedo realmente
decidir lo que quiero decir en
mis canciones”, confesó la
joven artista.
Junto con el disco, Anahí
ha emprendido su gira “Mi
Delirio World Tour”, que
la llevará por varios países
a nivel mundial, donde los
fanáticos están desesperados
por verla.
“Lo más increíble es que
gracias a los fanáticos empezamos a hacer el tour de
conciertos. Ya fuimos a Brasil, ahora iremos a Chile,
Argentina, Paraguay, Venezuela, Colombia, España,
Serbia y Eslovenia. También
quiero regresar a mi México
para hacer el concierto ahí,
ya que con RBD nunca nos
despedimos formalmente.
Quiero regresar porque es
mi país. Es una gira que va
a estar muy completa y sobretodo viviré la emoción
del concierto con mi gente.
Es un espectáculo que hemos
preparado mucho, traigo excelentes músicos bailarines,
estoy tocando instrumentos
y todo es completamente en
vivo. Estamos haciendo todo
para que la gente disfrute de
un buen concierto y un buen
espectáculo”, dijo Anahí.
La artista también comentó
acerca de su carrera como
actriz, “por ahora la tengo
un poco de lado porque estoy
dedicándome a la música,
porque creo que los sueños
hay que cumplirlos al cien
por ciento y ahorita estoy
dedicada en el mío”.
En los próximos meses
Anahí, continuará de gira

Where are you from?
Cece Segarra: I am from
New York originally, but my
background is Puerto Rican.
What is the main message
you want to send through
your music?
CS: Consistency and hard
work. I want to be a positive
role model for the younger generations. I feel that now we do
not really have someone to look
up and one of my dreams is to
give back to younger children.
I want to convey the message
that if you work hard you can
reach your dreams.
When did you enter the
world of music?
CS: I would have to say at
the age of 5, I started dancing
and gradually I started doing
plays.
Why did you choose a career related to music?
CS: I fell in love with it. It
has always been something
that gets my attention. I grew
up watching and listening to

are you doing to support
them?
CS: At this time I am promoting my song “Brand New”

a hopeful song, involving love

CS: I grew up in a Christian
family. We were always giving

Stars who will eat prison turkey Katharine McPhee spills on her Thanksgiving

prison turkey this Thanksgiving. It will be the rapper’s first Thanksgiving
behind bars, having begun
his stint back in March.
He filmed an MTV reality

ready to release her second
album in January, but first,
she’s putting in some Fox News
holiday time with Greta Van
Susteren!
“I was just in Washington
D.C., seeing Greta and filming
a special for Fox News that airs
over Thanksgiving,” the newly
blonde singer told Fox411 at
VH1’s Save the Music Big
Shopping event. “It was so
cool! I was singing for cancer
survivors and it was wonderful
to be there.”
McPhee had nothing but nice
things to say about meeting the
Fox News host.
“I love, love Greta! I always
watch her show and I really enjoy watching Fox News. Greta is
so petite in person. After watching her on TV, I thought she was
going to be this tall woman. I
think Greta is so easy to talk
to and she has such a kind way
about her.”
But the Fox News special is
just one of McPhee’s holiday
performances.
“I’m [also] singing my single,
‘Had it All’ in the Macy’s
Thanksgiving Day Parade. I’ll
be in New York all week getting
ready for that and after, I’ll head
home to California,” she told
Fox411. “I hope to get some
rest and a bit of quiet time with
my family. I don’t want to do
anything too crazy, but we may
plan a quick ski trip.”
McPhee says the holidays will
be the last time she has to herself
for quite some time.
“It’s a cuckoo time in my life
with my new record coming out
on January 5th. I’m traveling
so much and I can’t fully relax
because I have band rehearsals,”
she said. “It’s that time leading
up to the first week of record
release - totally crazy and exciting. I am planning on performing in L.A. and then also doing
some shows in New York.”

Daddy Yankee da el “Grito Mundial”

La fama es el sueño de muchos
pero la realidad de pocos. Se dice
que algunos cambian cuando logran
el éxito, pero quienes nunca cambian
a pesar de toda la popularidad y uno
de estos artistas es Daddy Yankee.
El cantante comenzó muy joven
en el mundo de la música; en ese entonces el reggaetón no era el género
más popular o preferido por la gente.
Sin embargo este joven boricua no
paró hasta llevar sus canciones hasta
el tope de las listas de popularidad.
Además de cantante, es productor, actor y empresario, produjo su
película “Talento De Barrio” en la
cual el mismo actuó. Lo sorprendente es que este joven talento no
se ha permitido despegar los pies
de la tierra, como sucede con otros
artistas de este género.
Recientemente tuvimos la oportunidad de reconfirmar la sencillez y
humildad de Daddy Yankee. En un
convivio con su fanaticada en Houston, donde la emisora radial 104.9
Tu Musica y Coors Light hicieron
el sueño realidad de sus seguidores
al permitirles conocer en persona al
cantante.
Ahí tuvimos la oportunidad de
platicar brevemente con él, y nos
dimos cuenta que para el cantante
tener una buena imagen con su

gente es lo más importante. Como
todos sabemos Daddy Yankee y
Ramón Ayala el cantante norteño
tienen halgo en común, el mismo
nombre.
“Ramón Ayala es el que usted ve
aquí, Daddy Yankee en persona. Soy
un guerrero, un joven que todos los
días se levanta a dar lo mejor como
ser humano” dijo Daddy Yankee.
En la entrevista este soldado de la
música reggaetón también explicó
que el dueto con Don Ramón Ayala
es algo que para el también es
importante, pero por problemas de
agendas de los dos no se ha podido
hacer.
El se ha unido a los artistas que
además de su carrera dedican su
tiempo a la filantropía, ayudando
a los niños de escasos recursos con
su fundación.
“Mi corazón me lo dictó y en eso
estamos, trabajando fuerte día tras
día por el bien de la humanidad. Con
lo que podamos aportar seguiremos
haciéndolo”, expresó el cantante
cuando le preguntamos que lo motiva para ayudar a los demás.
Por estos días se estrenará el
nuevo sencillo del cantante, titulado
“Grito Mundial”, una canción que
mezcla una fusión de reggaetón y
samba. Dicha canción fue de las
finalistas para ser la canción oficial
del Mundial de Futbol 2010. La letra
habla de la tolerancia y de decir no al
racismo y la discriminación.
Otro anuncio que nos emocionó
esta semana fue que el próximo
año, en el mes de abril la entrega
de Premios Billboard Latinos y la
conferencia del Billboard Latino
tendrán lugar en Puerto Rico.
Daddy Yankee se mostró orgulloso de este anuncio y nos dijo, “me
siento honrado que le hayan dado la
oportunidad de hacer tan importante
evento en Puerto Rico”.
El artista aprovechó para invitarnos a visitar la Isla del Encanto durante esa fiesta de la música latina.
“A la fanaticada y a los medios
que viajarán a Puerto Rico, vayan a
las playas. En Puerto Rico tenemos
mucho que ofrecerles a todos los
turistas para que vayan a pasarla
bien. En Puerto Rico se trata muy
bien a quienes visitan la isla”, dijo
Daddy Yankee.
Otro lado del gran corazón de
Daddy Yankee, fue cuando tomó el
tiempo para autografiar unas fotos y
playeras para unos niños de necesidades especiales que no pudieron
asistir al convivio pero no se quiso
ir sin poder complacer a sus fans tan
chiquitos e importantes.
El intérprete de “Gasolina” sigue
cosechando los frutos de todo lo que
ha sembrado, estamos seguros que
su nueva canción se sumará a la
lista de éxitos que ha hecho Daddy
Yankee.

Araceli, knew she wanted
to enter the modeling world.
She heard the “call” as early
as kindergarten.
As her reign comes to an
end, she shares with La Prensa
some of her most memorable
moments while she was Miss
Latina.
How do you define the
word beauty?
D.A.: It is not on the outside, it’s the inside that matters.
How do you define yourself?
Delisi Araceli: Hard working, motivated and I always
maintain myself doing something.
When did you first decide
to enter the world of modeling and beauty contests?
D.A.: Since I was in kindergarten I knew that I wanted
to be an actor. Now, I have
been professionally working
as a model and actress for
about 11 years.
Which profession is more
difficult? Acting or Modeling?
D.A.: Both fields are completely different. Acting is
difficult because it is really
hard to get into. Also, there
are many people watching
you while you work. Here
in Texas, it’s hard to break
through because there is little
to do, compared to larger cities like Los Angeles or New
York, where you can find
more opportunities working
as an actress. On the other
hand, modeling is hard since
you cannot be overweight
or short. In fact, I’ve been

denied a job because of my
nose.
What difficulties did you
have to overcome for the
title of Miss Latina World
2008-2009?
D.A.: It was difficult because there were many beautiful and wonderful women
in the competition, but my
communication skills were
my most valuable help. The
last part of the contest was
an open question that I had to
answer on my feet and in an
intelligent and professional
way.
What other countries
did you visit during your
reign?
D.A.: It was a very international experience; I had the
opportunity to visit Colombia,
Cuba, Puerto Rico and other
South American countries.
What did this title repre-
What do you think about
the stereotypes of “perfect”
ultra thin women that the
media portray?
D.A.: I have curves, there
is nothing small in me and I
embrace my curves. When I
go and talk to younger people
and children, which was the
focus of my reign, I tried to
send a message on a daily
basis: ‘We are Latinas, we
will always have our curves
and we must embrace them.’
I have a younger sister and I
do not want her to think that
she is not good enough to succeed, or not having a certain
body shape is a reason to not
be accepted. That is so hard
to hear.
What do you think about
plastic surgeries?
D.A.: If you really want
plastic surgery, go for it, but
do not do it to please someone else.
What is your message for
young people?
D.A.: Work hard, study
hard and don’t give up.
Now that your reign is
over, what is next?
D.A.: I am currently enrolled at UTSA and I am
going to get my Bachelor’s
Degree in Communications.
I would also love to be on a
T.V. show.
What did you learn during this year?
D.A.: You need to work
hard to get what you want.
That is what I did all this
time.

The weight of a
waitress
by Nina Duran
Waiting tables requires talent. If you disagree, chances are
you’ve never worked in the restaurant industry. Last year I
needed a change in my life. I was still hanging on to 20 lbs
from my pregnancy and losing it was a priority. I decided the
most effective way to do so was to be on the move, so I applied at a small bistro, just two blocks from my house.
I had zero experience, but was in need of a challenge. I
walked into my interview with honest answers, admitting to
being a fast learner. Within minutes I was hired and in less
than a week, I was scheduled to work my first dinner shift.
I was lucky. Frederick’s Bistro recently opened and everyone was new. We were all starting this journey together.
However, I was the only one that didn’t have a restaurant
résumé. It didn’t take long before I gained a new respect for
those that work in the service industry. Until that point, I
thought waiting tables was something a high school student
could do. I never realized the aptitude it took to serve others
and do it right.
It’s tough having patrons depend on you and it requires
a certain skill to handle diners that have high expectations,
blaming you (the waitress) for everything that goes wrong,
including errors that clearly belong to the kitchen and have
nothing to do with you as a server. Learning how to communicate and remain calm is important when it comes to the
waiting life.
Even though the kitchen isn’t your fault, as a waiter, it’s
your responsibility to cover for your chefs and the back-ofthe-house. Carrying the weight of everyone around you is
your duty when you put that apron on. If you don’t work as a
team (in a restaurant) or think like one, you will never make
it as a server.
My opinion completely changed when I started waiting
tables. I’ve waited at two restaurants and can honestly say
that it’s become a passion of mine. I stopped close to three
months ago and I’m beginning to miss it. The burden is
heavy when you wait tables, but the thrill and the excitement
of never knowing what will happen next makes the life of a
waitress beautiful.

Querida Nina: Somos una pareja mayor yo tengo
63 años y mi esposo 72, vivimos solos ya que nuestros
cuatro hijos cada uno tiene su casa, somos abuelos de
siete nietos y desde hace unos tres años yo sufrí de una
embolia que me afectó con parálisis, la mitad de mi
cuerpo; mi esposo siempre ha sido una buena persona
que me ama y me cuida y yo le estoy muy agradecida.
Te escribo porque tengo el problema que desde entonces
mi esposo es el que sale a hacer las compras de todo
tipo y ha venido a tener lo que se me figura que es una
compulsión de comprar, compra cosas que no necesitamos en casa, el refrigerador está atiborrado de cosas
que no necesitamos y muchas veces ni usamos y hasta
tenemos que tirar por que se echan a perder, lo mismo sucede con la alacena, en la que
sobreabundan las latas que también sin carecer de ellas las compra y ahí se quedan,
para que te digo compra cosas para el carro que no se requieren, llantas que están en
el garaje porque mi esposo las ve en oferta y las adquiere aunque no las necesite, lo
mismo sucede con shampoos, acondicionadores para el pelo y productos de farmacia
como vitaminas y materiales de curación, no sé cómo parar esa manía de comprar y
comprar y más aun que ya no tenemos espacio para almacenar tantas cosas ¿Qué me
aconsejas? Te saluda tu amiga y lectora: Amalia.
Amalia: ¿Qué puedo decirte que tu ya no sepas? Por supuesto qué tienes en casa a un
comprador compulsivo, ya que cumple con la característica principal de ser el tipo de
persona que sale a comprar unas cosas que se requieren en casa y regresa con otras que no
necesita y que no hay sitio para guardarlas, eso hace que con el apoyo de tus hijos traten de
hacerle entender de la mejor manera a tu esposo que es el momento de solicitar la ayuda
de un experto profesional que le ayude a vencer esa compulsión, al mismo tiempo que se
inicie esa terapia, ya verás que una de las primeras recomendaciones que recibirá, será la de
deshacerse de todos los artículos que no necesite, todo lo que sea utilizable les recomiendo
que lo obsequien a instituciones no lucrativas que ayudan a personas con necesidades de todo
tipo y lo que no sea así, lo que este caducado o no se pueda usar pues de plano a la basura.
Ya verás que todo tiene arreglo. Te deseo que todo resulte muy bien.
Querida Nina: Estoy muy ofendida con una amiga de muchos años y es que hace
unos meses mi hijo mayor tuvo un accidente de motocicleta y mientras se recuperaba
estuve en el hospital acompañándolo, mientras ella me hizo favor de arreglar mi casa
y ocuparse de resolver algunos asuntos personales, por la confianza que existe entre
nosotras, pero se dio el caso que mis padres se dieron una vuelta por la casa y encontraron a mi amiga, la que se dedicó a hablar muy mal de mí, diciéndoles que soy una
irresponsable y desobligada con mis deberes familiares, mis padres me lo contaron y
desde entonces siento que se quebró algo muy dentro de mi corazón ¿Qué crees que
debo hacer? Te lo agradece: Una amiga ofendida
Estimada Amiga: Comprendo cómo debes sentirte y no te culpo, en este caso considero
que debes tomar un tiempo y enfrentar directamente el asunto, primero habla con tu amiga
reconoce su invaluable ayuda en momentos tan difíciles y refiérele lo que ahora sabes, escucha
su justificación, sus explicaciones. De lo que ella te diga, la forma y la manera de expresarlo
te servirá para que tu establezcas con determinación el continuar la amistad entre ustedes o
poner un hasta aquí a lo que ya no tiene remedio continuar. Te deseo lo mejor para ti.
Y ahora los chistes de la semana:
Una paciente visita al cirujano plástico y este la somete a un tratamiento extremo para
rejuvenecerle el rostro, una semana después al retirarle los vendajes y verse al espejo, le dice al
médico me agrada el resultado, solo que me gustaría tener los ojos más grandes y expresivos
a lo que el galeno responde eso no es ningún problema, ahorita la enfermera le mostrará el
balance de su cuenta por la operación y su deseo se hará realidad de inmediato.
Estaban dos niños cada uno con un trompo en la mano y uno dice al otro a ver baila tu
trompo y este dice: No sepo y el otro dice: Yo no sabo, ahí mismo una señora que los escuchaba les dice: Niños no se dice no sepo y no sabo y estos le preguntan ¿Cómo se dice?
No sé, entonces los niños a coro le gritan ¡Y sí no sabe, por qué nos regaña!
