You’d have to be serious about commitment if you’d choose to live hundreds
-- or even thousands -- of miles away
from the person you love. But sometimes
it’s just not up to you. Career, school and
family are just a few of the factors that
keep lovers whispering sweet nothings
into phones instead of each other’s ears.
However, if you think a relationship is
doomed because of distance, think again.

boundaries for a successful long-distance
relationship. See if you like their tips, and
perhaps implement them into your own

According to stats compiled by the
Center for the Study of Long-Distance
Relationships (yes, there really is such a
thing), the myth that most long-distance
relationships fail is just that: a myth. The
reality is that more couples are making
it work than you might think. Over one
1. Be clear about expectations up
front. The difference between longdistance relationship couples who make it
and ones who don’t can be summed up in
two words: ground rules (a call or e-mail
at least once a day, see each other at least
once every two months, etc.)
2. Express yourself. Make your loved

Being physically together is best when

a distance. Creativity is key –sparks are
guaranteed!
5. Keep the faith. Yes, it’s tough being apart, but harping on the negative can
take a toll on the relationship. Instead of
moaning that you never see each other,
talk about the interesting things you’ve
been doing and ask what he/she is up
to. This will help in two ways: He/she
won’t think you’re obsessed with the
relationship, and you won’t be obsessed.
The happier you act with your life, the
happier you’ll actually feel.

El acordeón no es una simple
caja de madera unida por un
pedazo cuadrado, parecido a
un gusano, sino un instrumento
mágico que con el pulsar de
los dedos y el paso del aire
genera música vivaracha, emite
melodías contagiosas y trasmite
alegría.
“El acordeón alegra corazones, me invita a bailar y lo
siento en mi sangre” compartió
la acordeonista profesional, Eva
Ybarra, mejor conocida como la
reina del acordeón.
Muchos pensarán que este
singular instrumento se originó
en algún lugar cerca de México,
ya que se utiliza constantemente
en la música grupera y norteña.
No obstante, éste es originario
de Alemania y está conformado
por un fuelle (gusano de en
medio), un diapasón y dos cajas
armónicas.
En la caja derecha se encuentra el diapasón que puede ser
como las teclas de un piano o
de botones, depende del tipo de
acordeón. Por otro lado, ambos
tipos de acordeón tienen botones
para tocar los bajos y acordes
de acompañamiento en la parte
izquierda.
Existen cuatro tipos de acordeones: el cromático a piano,
cromático de botones, diatónico

y la concertina. La vida del
acordeón es de aproximadamente 5 años, o tal vez lo único
que se necesite reemplazar es
el fuelle.
Aunque no lo crea, la temperatura influye mucho en los sonidos que el acordeón transmite, si
lo expone por mucho tiempo al
calor se altera el sonido. Cuando
compre su instrumento lo tendrá
que entonar o afinar en 440.
Hay de diferentes precios y
tamaños y se pueden encontrar
en tiendas de instrumentos musicales, casas de empeño y hasta
en la pulga. Un acordeón nuevo
le puede costar desde $200 hasta
$4,000, dependiendo de la marca. Entre las mejores marcas se
encuentran Hohner de Alemania
y la italiana Gabbanelli.
La peculiar caja se toca con
popularidad en Alemania, Italia, Asturias, País Vasco, Paris,
Austria, pero se ha convertido
en ícono de la música regional
mexicana.
El acordeón le brinda el sello
a nuestra música norteña y gru-
pera, convirtiéndola en canciones joviales y que incitan a dar
una buena zapateada. Ambos
géneros musicales no existirían
sin el acordeón.
“Sin el acordeón la música
(norteña) no se escucharía tan
bonita”, dijo Ybarra.
Incluso, en San Antonio se
realiza año tras año, el Festival
Internacional de Acordeón, para
celebrar la identidad del instrumento y el alcance que ha tenido
en el mundo. Así como también
la importancia de preservar y
presentar las tradiciones étnicas,
regionales y nacionales de la
música que usa el acordeón y
educar a la audiencia acerca de
este instrumento y otros que se
derivan del mismo. El festival
se llevará a cabo en La Villita
el 15 y 16 de octubre.
El acordeón es un instrumento
que revive el ánimo, le pone una
sonrisa en la cara e instantáneamente al escucharlo lo incita a
bailar. Es labor de todos mantener este instrumento vivo y
que su uso siga creciendo.

Is Jorge Alejandro about to hit the lottery?

Jorge Alejandro is one of
15 finalists in the Songwriting
Contest for Hope and Justice
in a competition of over 200
composers.
“Levanten La Voz,” which
Alejandro co-wrote with his
brother Alfredo Knott is the tune
that made the finals.
The first place winner will
take home $6000 and the runner
ups will receive $2000, $1200
and $800. Other local finalists
include Bebo Cardenas, René
René and Jesse Farias of La
Tropa F plus Rachel Cruz and
Josie Méndez Negrette. It’s not
the lottery, but it’s the next best
thing.
“I wrote the two songs I submitted as a story with a diplomatic protest,” said Alejandro,
who dropped his last name,
Knott, when he became a solo
recording artist.
Other finalists include songwriters from Laredo (Los Tres
Reyes featuring Gilberto Puente), Dallas, the Rio Grande
Valley, Puerto Rico, Mexico,
California and yes, Arizona.
The 51-year-old vocalist was
born to Yolanda Ornelas in Villa
Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico where

“I moved to Texas in 1973 in
search of a big city and larger
opportunities,” Alejandro said
of his reason for crossing the
border to the land of opportunity.
A year later he became a bass
player with Los Tipicos. What’s
ironic is that he joined the vocal
duo of René and René. It is also
ironic that Rene’s last name is
the same as his mothers, Ornelas, and are both now vying for
the same prize.
In regard to the songwriting
competition, Alejandro said,
“René René was one of my first
influences and inspirations because he’s a good songwriter.”
Jorge Ramírez was the other
‘René.’ Next Alejandro and
Ramírez hooked up with Joe
Revelez to become Rio Rami,
a Tejano group that had great
success in Mexico – while simultaneously playing bass in
the Ramiro Cervera Orchestra
before finally forming Jorge
Alejandro y La Paz in 1981.
In fact, the Rio Rami album
was produced with none other
than Marco Antonio Solís.
The 1980s was a good decade
as he released 45 rpm singles,
cassettes and 33 1/3 rpm albums
on the Cara, SAS, Moni, Joey,
Del Rey and CBS record labels,
not to mention becoming the
host of his own television show
and receiving several Tejano
Music Awards nominations.
Then his recording as a soloist
became virtually non-existent
because he became a highly
sought-after recording engineer
and studio musician, songwriter
and singer.
“Yes, I did record, but always
as a part of other projects,” Alejandro said of his absence from
radio’s airwaves. “Some were
international hits in other genres
such as reggaeton.
As a singer, he did backup vocals for Masizzo, Mazz,
Mesquite and he was featured
in several compilations. As a
songwriter, he wrote “Sin Ella,”
“Que Traigan Botellas” and
“Serveme Otra Cantinero” for
Michael Salgado; also “Señorita
Tequila” and “Hay un Corazón”
for Jay Pérez,
As a producer/engineer he did
recording sessions with Reyli,
Dinastia Norteña sometimes
also playing bass, cowbells,
timbales and other percussion
instruments as a studio musician.
Besides being in demand,
he was also selected the 2005
Academy of Tejano Musicians
and Artists’ “Percussionist of
the Year.”

Grab The Popcorn!

Movie: “The Town”
Rating: R (violence / language)

Where I Saw It: Palladium
Theater
One word: Wow. This is definitely one of the best movies I’ve
seen in a very long time. In fact,
I’ll say, it’s probably the best
movie of the year. Of course,
that is, if you like a good action
thriller.
“The Town” stars Ben Affleck
(“State of Play” “Smokin’ Aces”)
as Doug MacRay, the rough and
tough leader of a no-nonsense
bank robbing crew.
The movie takes places in the
gritty streets of Charlestown,
the armed robbery capital of
the United States. From the
start, we see Doug is the brains
behind the group. While, he’s
very intelligent and polished
for a blue-collar guy, he is also
brutally ruthless when he has to
be. Playing Affleck’s best friend
in the movie is the talented and
award-winning Jeremy Renner
(“The Hurt Locker” “28 Days
Later”). Renner plays the volatile
and on-edge muscle man of the
group, James.
James is unpredictable and
crosses the line when he takes a
hostage from one of their bank
jobs. It is only after she is released that the group finds out
that, Claire, the hostage, lives
just a few blocks from their
home.
Of course, things get complicated when Doug starts to follow Claire to see if she knows
anything and the two end up in a
dangerous romance. Remember,
Claire has no idea who Doug is
as they all wore costumes when
they kidnapped her. Crazy, I
know.
To add even more drama, Doug
has been thinking about quitting
the bank robbing business; something his best friend considers an
act of betrayal against him and
their town.
In case you didn’t know, Affleck not only starred in the film,
he was also the director. Kudos
to him for pulling off a great performance in both departments. I
have to add that the supporting
cast was amazing as well. Besides the two main stars, “The
Town” also counted on screen
veteran Chris Cooper (“The
Company Men” “The Kingdom”)
who plays Affleck’s imprisoned
father, as well as other key players such as the beautiful Rebecca
Hall (“Frost/Nixon” “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”) and the intense
acting of Pete Postlethwaite who
plays an old-school mobster from
the neighborhood.
“The Town” is definitely not
your average Ben Affleck movie
and it is definitely a great heist
flick. It is directed well, with just
the right amount of suspense, action, and just the right sprinkle
of comedy. It’ll be in my DVD
collection and I think you will
enjoy it.
So, is it good? Watch it and
you decide!

Elda de la Rosa impone sello de
distinción entre diseñadores latinos
(EFE).- La mexicana Elda de
la Rosa lleva “en la sangre” la
alta costura y con mucho esfuerzo ha logrado imponer su estilo y
sello de distinción como una de
las más destacadas diseñadoras
de moda latinas.
Nacida en Coahuila, norte de
México, Elda llegó a los tres años
de edad con su familia a la ciudad
de Rockford, Illinois, cercana a
Chicago.
Su madre era modista y su
padre albañil, “gente creativa
y acostumbrada a utilizar las
manos para transformar materia
prima en cosas maravillosas”,
dijo en una entrevista.
“De ahí surgió el entusiasmo
que me ha empujado en la vida en
busca de objetivos que parecen
inalcanzables”, agregó.
Después de finalizar la preparatoria en Rockford, y de trabajar
en esa ciudad como pasante en
el taller de una modista italiana
especializada en vestidos de novia, Elda llegó a Chicago en 1989
para estudiar diseño de moda en

$1.1 mil in scholarship money up for grabs for S.A. students

Compass, in partnership with the
City of San Antonio, announced
a 1.1 million dollar grant in
scholarship money that will be
awarded to San Antonio high
school students attending the inaugural College Extravaganza at
St. Mary’s University Greehay
Arena on September 25.
“I am extremely pleased and
gratified that the city of San
Antonio, including its colleges,
universities and school districts,
have come together to support
this incredibly important and
groundbreaking initiative,”
said George “Iceman” Gervin,
former San Antonio Spur, NBA
Hall of Famer and philanthropist. “The College Extravaganza
promises to be a great success
and will provide valuable information and monetary assistance
to promising students throughout San Antonio.”
The “Iceman” is well known
for his former Spurs star status,
however, he has always been
committed to education and it is
a driving factor in his life. “This
is my passion, this is my heart,”
he said. “Relationships to me are
the grandest love of them all, and
I have a great relationship with
this community, so this is what
I want to do for them.”
College Extravaganza is an
event that will reduce the barriers of students who want to pursue a college degree. Twelve local colleges and universities will
come together to make college
a reality for high school juniors
and seniors in hopes to nurture
the relationship between home,
community, high school, and
institutions of higher learning.
“College Extravaganza is a
dream,” stated Dr. Delia Bara,
College Extravaganza Event
Chairperson and VP Operations
of George Gervin Youth Center. Handicapped by a severe
stuttering problem, Dr. Bara
overcame obstacles by receiving her bachelor’s degree, master’s and doctorate –all while
being a single parent with two
young children. “I chose to go
to school,” she said.

for this year’s College Extrava-
ganza.

“San Antonio is a beautiful

president and CEO of George
Gervin Youth Center. “But a
lot of times our young people
are disconnected to what’s happening. We want to focus on
that 13 to 27 year old group in
terms of developing programs
initiatives.”
Hawkins acknowledged that
San Antonio faces numerous
barriers. “Teen pregnancy rate
is high and the dropout rate is
high, so we have to look at our
city and see what we can do to
help. My hope is that students
realize that the city as a whole is
behind them, and we want them
to make the right decisions in
terms of their education.”
San Antonio Spurs Baseline
Bums will also be at the College Extravaganza. “We believe
strongly in furthering education
and helping out in the community and most importantly, we
follow in our Spurs values,” said
Bonnie Keammerer, president of
the San Antonio Spurs Baseline
Bums. “We’re all about giving
back to the community and role
modeling.”
Referred to as a “once-ina-lifetime experience for students,” the College Extravaganza promises to bring together
individuals from all walks of
life and ages to accomplish a
common goal: access to higher
education for all people.
“The key to our future is
education,” mentioned State
Senator Carlos Uresti. “If we do
not educate our young students,
things will only be in despair.
We have the highest poverty
rates in five decades, but with
this partnership, the future is
bright for our high school students.”
While at the event, students
will meet with local college and
university representation, be
able to take advantage of faceto-face financial aid and scholarship application assistance, as
well as apply on site for scholarships that will only be awarded
to attendees of the event.

John Toohey and Arts S.A. working to
bring the best of the arts to San Antonio

John Toohey has a vision
– to educate, enrich and entertain San Antonio audiences
with top talent from across the
globe.
He readily admits he wears
many hats – “producer, fundraiser and marketing guy”
– but he also gets to work
with many specialists who extensively reinforce his efforts.
He found a dedicated staff
of two when he arrived in
January 2009, who marshaled
herculean efforts to keep the
program going, but lots of
work, by necessity, had been
deferred. The first order of
business was to get things back
on track. Now he works with
a staff of three, including Lee
Tinker, and a Board of Directors, to bring the arts to San
Antonio audiences.
The president and executive
director of ARTS San Antonio
came armed with super credentials and experience to reach
his goal from his last engagement as managing director of
Texas Ballet Theater (Dallas
- Fort Worth).
Before joining the Ballet,
he served 17 years as general
manager of the Fort Worth
Symphony Orchestra, where
he founded and managed the
Orchestra’s popular “Concerts
in The Garden” summer music
festival. He was also director
of marketing of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Hollywood Bowl, director of marketing and communications of
The Dallas Opera and general
manager of the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra
in New London, Connecticut.
An artist himself, Toohey
studied bassoon at Webster
University in St. Louis and at
Boston University, where he
even founded and managed the
Boston University Chamber
Orchestra.
At ARTS SA, Toohey is
responsible for a myriad of
things, from fund-raising and
development to attracting
wonderful programming to
overseeing the operation of
this $1.2M performing arts
organization.
He loves the variety and
scope of his position, but the
opportunity to operate educational programs through ARts
TEach is a favorite.
The ARtsTEach program is
collaboration between schools,
corporate interests and the
community to bring visual,
performing and literary arts
workshops to elementary
schools across San Antonio.
Toohey explains an important
part of the organization’s
commitment is to improve
education through the arts by
reaching more children in San
Antonio and the surrounding
areas each year. Through the
ARtsTEach program, Toohey
and ARTS SA continue building partnerships and proving
that “the arts are basic to education”.
“It’s about the arts, but in
reality it teaches real skills,
problem solving and task completion. The program provides
so many students with a chance
to view learning through a different lens - and I’m excited
about that,” he told La Prensa.
Bringing the arts to everyone
in the community is a huge
part of Toohey’s job, and he
is meeting that goal by bringing San Antonio and eclectic
mix of outstanding entertainers every season. Recently,
San Antonio audiences filled
the Majestic to see Rodrigo
y Gabriela, an acoustic guitar
duo with a growing audience
and an incredible repertoire of
original music.
“Some of our programs are
not commercially viable, they
are important but not moneymakers, like a piano recital,”
he explained. Some of our programs do create net revenue,

like the upcoming Vince Gill
concert,” he said.
So Toohey networks with
talent buyers from across the
US to coordinate acts so they
can perform here.
“We work closely with other
presenters in the region so
artists can have a tour with a
date in San Antonio and spread
the cost over several engagements,” he said.
Using non-traditional approaches is one way Toohey
is putting San Antonio on the
map for emerging and established talent. He hopes to bring
at least one signature event for
every season, as well as many
popular artists, which depends
on increasing audience attendance and fundraising efforts.
For the 2010-2011 season,
Toohey brings Yo Yo Ma and
the Silk Road Players, an astonishing opportunity for all
audiences in San Antonio. An
evening with the Silk Road is
more than just an evening of
amazing music; it is a chance
to see a presentation rarely
available in San Antonio that
melds the East and West.
“We are honored to have the
preeminent classical performer
come to San Antonio. On this
one night, he will come and
share his renowned talent with
our audience – and our goal
is to have a sold out house,”
Toohey added.
From ballet to rock to country to the absolute top of the
classical world, Toohey wants
San Antonio audiences to
come to performances and be
enriched by the wonderful flavors and influences that come
from all the arts. He strives to
find programming for all audiences and all tastes.
“We have four core values:
to make great performances
and art accessible to all audiences in every way, to have
great diversity in our programming, to strive for excellence
and to be fiscally responsible
and maximize our dollars to
benefit San Antonio,” he said.
Toohey appreciates the difficulties he faces with his
wonderful quest to make San
Antonio a cultural Mecca for
the arts.
“There is no silver bullet for
securing great talent and succeeding with the organizations
goals, but the people of San
Antonio can help by attending

Paws for a cause

This past Thursday, the
Cressie Animal Refuge and
Enrichment (CARE) hosted a
dog fashion show and fundraising mixer at the Pearl Brewery
Center Breezeway.
The event was held to help the
San Antonio’s Animal Care Services (ACS) and bring awareness to our cities stray animal
population.
“ACS has been a fantastic
partner,” said Peggy Brink,
founder of CARE. “I wanted to
partner with them because they
need the help. They didn’t create
the animal problem. They are
trying to help the community
solve the animal problem.”
Brink has been in non-profit
organizations helping children, but as she stated, “I loved
animals all my life and I was
coming to a point in my life
where I decided to start my own
non-profit organization with a
real passion. I just wanted to do
something to help.”
“Peggy is one of our stars, our
shooting stars,” said Director of
ACS, Gary Hendel. “Peggy’s
organization (CARE) saved over

Frente a frente con Marco Antonio Solís

Los ídolos musicales no se
hacen de un día para otro, van
creciendo junto con su carrera y
a veces les toma muchos años.
Un claro ejemplo es el señor
Marco Antonio Solís, que ha
dedicado su vida a darle grandes
canciones a la gente.
Treinta años de carrera se dice
fácil, pero para Marco Antonio,
estas décadas han sido de aprendizaje, crecimiento personal y
espiritual. Todo esto se refleja
en sus letras, armonías y sobre
el escenario— cuando canta la
magia invade a su público.
Parece que fue hace poco
cuando su carrera despegó con
el grupo Los Bukis y se dio a
conocer a nivel internacional,
con canciones como “Tu cárcel”
y “Me volví a acordar de ti”.
Marco Antonio es una persona
humilde, amable que irradia
paz interior. La Prensa de San
Antonio tuvo la oportunidad
de compartir con él después
de unos de sus conciertos. Ahí
muy amablemente concedió una
entrevista.
“La verdad yo no pierdo esa
distancia con la gente y se lo que
significa un abrazo o dirigirle
un saludo a la gente. Se lo que
vale eso para los fanáticos, que
nos ven solo en la televisión o
las revistas. Yo aprecio mucho
a la gente y esos detalles”, dijo
Marco Antonio sobre la relación
con sus fans.
Su música ha trascendido
fronteras, edades y géneros, por
eso a sus presentaciones acude
gente de diferentes edades, todos
con un solo propósito, ver a su
ídolo sobre el escenario y corear
junto a él sus más grandes éxitos.
“Los corazones no tienen
edad, yo siempre veo gente
grande en mis conciertos, no
solo aquí, también cuando voy
a Argentina y más países de
Sudamérica. Siempre hay gente
mayor que se identifica con mi
música. Es una bendición que
las canciones lleguen a la gente
mayor y a los niños también”,
expresó el cantante en su camerino.
A lo que agregó, “Es hermoso que a la gente le guste mi
música, yo pretendo que llegue a
gente de todas las edades”.
Christian Solís, su esposa,
es la responsable de que su
marido siempre luzca como un
caballero, siempre está al tanto
de todo lo que pasa a su alrededor y pendiente de que cumpla
con los medios de comunicación
y sus fanáticos.
“La verdad estoy súper orgulloso de ella, yo la aprecio

por 17 años”, comentó sobre su
distinguida esposa.
Los reconocimientos han sido
muchos en su carrera, recientemente se hizo acreedor de una
estrella en el paseo de la fama en
Hollywood y obtuvo el premio
Latin Grammy.
“Si recuerdo que me dijiste que
iba a ganar el Grammy, me deseaste
la suerte. También ganamos con
la canción ‘No Molestar’, lo mas
reciente”, le dijo a mi compañera,
Lucy Moreno.

Las listas de popularidad
muestran el gusto del público,
hay éxitos que hacen historia al
mantenerse semanas y meses en
los primeros lugares. Son varias
las listas que se presentan semana
a semana con los resultados de las
canciones más solicitadas.
El título “Dime que me quieres”, les puede resultar familiar,
es el tema más reciente de la
Banda el Recodo, de Don Cruz
Lizárraga, agrupación que ha
logrado enormes éxitos con sus
más recientes discos, superando
a muchos artistas en el género
regional mexicano, una cosa muy
difícil de lograr, especialmente
por las situaciones difíciles que
enfrenta la industria musical. La
canción se ha mantenido en las
listas de popularidad por 14 semanas consecutivas, según lo reporta
Billboard y Monitor Latino.

Sus canciones no solo han sido
interpretadas por si mismo en su

artistas de genero regional como
Germán Montero, Los Cuates de
Sinaloa y el desaparecido, Sergio
Vega ‘El Shaka’. Pero sin duda, el
éxito más grande como compositor ha sido con Banda el Recodo.
“Quiero comentarte algo, hasta
antes del éxito de “Dime que me
quieres”, no me consideraba un
buen compositor. Yo soy cantante y he cantado algunas de mis
canciones, tengo un hermano que
es cantante y que me ha grabado
bastantes temas. Pero ahora con
lo que esta pasando con esta
canción, me considero ya un compositor y me creo compositor”,
comentó Miguel Ángel.
Ahora, el reto más grande sigue
para Miguel Ángel Romero, ya
que tendrá que superar este éxito
con otros de sus temas, tal vez
en la voz de otro artista o con
la Banda el Recodo. Lo que por
ahora es seguro es que con ese
talento logrará hacerlo, aunque no
sabemos cuándo, pero esperemos
que los éxitos sigan para el talentoso mexicano.
“Voy avanzando paso a paso,
de hecho quiero seguir haciendo
canciones para que sigan conquistando a la gente”, concluyó.

place. Under foster care, the
dogs are provided with enrichment services consisting of
training exercises to make pets
more attractive for adoption.

if you can foster for as short as
a week. What’s a week in your

Since taking over as director
of ACS last may, Hendel has
worked with other city groups
that share the same interests as

advocate saving San Antonio’s
stray animal population and
have formed a “Live Release”
committee.
To emphasize his goal Hendel stated, “San Antonio has a
no kill goal. That no kill goal
is unique in the United States.
There are lots of people that talk
no, but we want our community
to be no kill.”
An initiative to raise $200,000
to build a one-of-a-kind fostering facility was launched by
CARE to handle a larger number
of animals. The facility will be
capable of fostering 50 dogs and
25 cats every 45 days. During
their stay animals will receive
medical treatment if needed and
training in a “home” environment so they can be adopted by
caring families.

Evelyn Ybarra, 16, is one of the

High, Ybarra knows the value of a college degree. She plans to attend San
Antonio College to pursue a career as
an ultrasound technician. “Education
is your life, plus there’s all this free
money and grants, so there’s really no
excuse,” she said.
District 5 City Councilman David
Medina Jr. spoke on behalf of Mayor
Julian Castro, who’s placed a huge
emphasis on education for San Antonio
youth.

leadership, the City of San Antonio has
placed a premium on education,” stated

consecuencias van desde llevarse una decepción amorosa y ver que no es el
hombre indicado, hasta una situación como esta, en la cual las víctimas son los
hijos. Querida Carmen, te felicito por tu valentía, y agradezco tu confianza,
hiciste lo correcto. Apóyate en algún familiar y trata de que él hable con tu

Fotoseptiembre en S. A.: representando el bicentenario

Con motivo de las celebraciones
del Bicentenario de la Independencia de Mexico y el Centenario de la
Revolución Mexicana, San Antonio
fue elegido para interpretar esta gran
celebración en el evento Fotoseptiembre el cual se ha realizado desde
hace varios años.
La Prensa entrevistó a los fotógrafos Montiel Klint, Eric Lane los
cuales hablaron de su pasión por
este arte.
El Museo de Arte en San Antonio
es uno de los participantes del evento
Fotoseptiembre 2010. El director David Rubin se interesó por traer artistas
de nacionalidad mexicana a formar
parte del gran evento, ya que durante
este mes se celebra el bicentenario de
la independencia mexicana. Es por
ello que los hermanos Montiel Klint
han formado parte de la exhibición
fotográfica del museo, dejando huella
en todos aquellos interesados en la
fotografía contemporánea.

son un par de hermanos mexicanos
dedicados a la fotografía artística
comercial. Conocidos por su trabajo
como individuales y en conjunto,

exposiciones alrededor del mundo.
Ahora el arte de los hermanos Montiel se encuentra en El Museo de Arte
en San Antonio, formando parte del
gran evento Fotoseptiembre 2010.
Llevándose diez años de diferencia Fernando, nacido en 1978
y Gerardo Montiel Klint, nacido
en 1968, comparten un interés en
común: El arte contemporáneo de la
fotografía. Desde muy pequeños, los
hermanos Montiel solían fijarse en
álbumes fotográficos de su abuela,
pues siempre sintieron una atracción
por ese secreto tan particular que cada
una de las imágenes contenía. Aún
cuando ninguno de los dos tuvo esa
oportunidad de conocer a su abuela
a fondo, se dieron cuenta de que esa
sensación por la fotografía era indis-

pensable en sus vidas.
Gerardo ha trabajado como fotógrafo profesional desde 1994. Durante sus años de universidad, se
dedicó a estudiar fotografía y diseño
de productos, pero debido a la crisis
económica en México en esa temporada, se vio forzado a enfocarse
en la publicidad, creando junto con
su hermano una agencia publicitaria.
Gerardo ha dado a entender a su
público que suele ser una persona
muy callada y solitaria, ya que en
sus fotografías muestra esa pasión
por el arte contemporáneo, utilizando
cámara tradicional sin manipulación
de ninguno de sus retratos.
Por otro lado Fernando siendo diez
años más joven, siempre tuvo ese
interés por el arte cinematográfico.
A la edad de dieciocho años, dedujo
que la fotografía sería un arte mucho
menos complicado ya que él podría
tener control de su propio trabajo
sin tener que responderle a cientos
de asistentes en la producción de
una película. Siendo un poco más
extrovertido, Fernando suele enfocar
sus imágenes en el humor negro,
burlesco y festivo. Muchas de sus
imágenes son forjadas con cámara
digital y programas especiales como
Photoshop.
Al comenzar su trabajo como
fotógrafos los hermanos Montiel
Klint comenzaron a utilizar la misma
metodología. Efectúan bosquejos,
determinan una locación e invitan
a relativos a formar parte de sus
fotografías.
Aún teniendo una ideología tan
dispareja, ambos comparten la misma inquietud y desean promover su
arte en colecciones fotográficas como
“No Escape” entre otras.
La gran mayoría de las exhibiciones en galerías o museos tienen una
cualidad anónima. Generalmente las
imágenes han sido desasociadas del
artista, dejando al espectador con una
posible duda de cómo y en base a qué
se realizó el trabajo.
En sus retratos casuales, Eric Lane
se ha dedicado a reunir artistas con
sus propios trabajos. El artista se ha
encargado de explorar y celebrar la
vida de reconocidos artistas de San
Antonio incluyendo sus trabajos
artísticos.
Entre los artistas que Lane ha
fotografiado se incluyen Rolando
Briseño, Franco Mondini-Ruiz,
Jane Madrigal y Russell Stephenson.
“Creo que la única vida que vale es
la vida de arte”, comentó el fotógrafo
Eric Lane. “Después de que nuestras
necesidades básicas son cumplidas,
considero que sin arte no hay vida”.
De acuerdo al fotógrafo, hay una
necesidad importante y esencial en
todos aquellos relacionados con el
arte: La creatividad. Es sabido que
la creatividad es indispensable para
poder realizar infinidad de actividades en esta vida, mas en el arte es
no solo una necesidad sino también
una manera de destacarse en el medio
expresando la autenticidad su arte.

internet, ya que utiliza muy poco la

lizado por él es experimental.
El fotógrafo considera la cámara
digital un aparato esencial para sus
trabajos ya que disfruta de enfocarse
en lo que él desea. De igual manera,
comentó que por el momento el estilo
del que más goza es el experimental.
Por otro lado, para Lane el internet no
es necesario ya que siendo su trabajo
un algo autentico y puro, rara vez se
respalda de programas informáticos.
“Considero que el futuro del sector
fotográfico en San Antonio es muy
amplio. Existen infinitas oportuni-
dades no solamente para fotógrafos
sino también para aquellos que están
interesados en promover otro tipo de
arte”, expresó Lane a La Prensa.
La exhibición de Eric Lane forma
parte de Fotoseptiembre 2010, y está
presente en la Galería Gallista desde
el 11 de septiembre en donde cada
uno de los retratos será no solamente
reconocidos por el fotógrafo, sino
también por aquellos pintores que
se han tomado la libertad de mostrar
lo que realmente interpretan sus
habilidades.

Thomas, utilizadas en anuncios
comerciales.
Fueron los primeros de una
extensa lista de celebridades
convertidas en clientes de Elda
de la Rosa, que poco a poco fue
imponiendo su sello de distinción
en la confección de prendas de
calidad.
En particular, Elda es reconocida por sus creaciones artesanales, entre las que se destacan vestidos para coctel, noche, bodas y
ceremonias de compromiso.
Sus piezas se llaman Esperanza, Rosario, Altagracia, Hermosa o Erlinda, el nombre de su
tía fallecida que le facilitó los
primeros pasos en la profesión.
“Son nombres de mujeres
fuertes que me enseñaron a perseguir mis sueños, y que son líderes para cualquiera que quiera
salir adelante”, dijo.
Elda trabaja con meticulosidad
hasta el punto que puede dedicar
hasta seis meses para terminar un
diseño, desde la primera entrevista para recibir el pedido hasta
la elaboración del molde, el corte
de la tela y la confección.
La primera dama Michelle
Obama atrajo la atención hacia
las diseñadoras hispanas de Chicago cuando escogió modelos de
María Pinto para sus primeras
actividades en la Casa Blanca.
Y Elda sostuvo bien alto la
antorcha de las creaciones de esta
ciudad cuando uno de sus modelos fue finalista en un concurso
para la noche de los premios
Oscar 2010.
Se presentaron diseñadores
de todo el mundo y fueron escogidos nueve finalistas para
vestir a las acompañantes de los
ganadores del Oscar.
Elda no obtuvo el primer premio con su modelo de fiesta
Lucero, extraído de su colección
Alta Gracia 2010, pero la exposición lograda en la alfombra
roja le sirvió para ser entrevistadas en CNN, E! Entertainment Television y cadenas de
televisión de España, Colombia
y Alemania.
“Esto me sirvió para afianzar
y hacer crecer mi nombre entre
los creadores, y ahora puedo
aspirar a vender mis modelos en
boutiques de Nueva York, Dallas
y Beverly Hills”, agregó.
Desde 2004, Elda trabaja en un
nuevo local ubicado un poco más
al norte en un edificio histórico
del barrio Edgewater, y en un
espacio que refleja su estilo y
estética.
“Aquí es donde paso el día con
mis novias, las únicas que pueden
hacerme desviar la atención de
mis dos hijos [de 5 y 13 años
edad]”, señaló.
A pesar de que toda su vida ha
transcurrido en Estados Unidos,
Elda se declara mexicana “con
mucho orgullo”, en particular
cuando en algunas ocasiones
los estereotipos provocan confusiones.
“Soy chaparrita y de piel
oscura y muchas veces llegan
posibles clientas al taller que
piden hablar con la dueña. ¿En
qué puedo ayudarla? es mi respuesta, siempre con la mejor
sonrisa”, finalizó.
