En ceremonia solemne el BRITÁNICO inauguró su ampliado y remodelado
BRITÁNICO San Miguel. El evento fue dirigido por Cecilia Bentín de Cruchaga,
presidenta del Consejo Directivo, y contó con la presencia de su excelencia, el
embajador del Reino Unido, James Dauris; el alcalde de San Miguel, Salvador
Heresi Chicoma; así como miembros del Consejo Directivo, autoridades,
personal del BRITÁNICO, entre otros invitados. Los ilustres padrinos fueron el
embajador del Reino Unido y el alcalde de San Miguel.
Gracias a esta nueva obra, el edificio cuenta con cinco niveles, un sótano
donde se ubica el auditorio, hall, camerinos, backstage y baños, todo ello
integrado dentro del área cultural.

En el primer nivel se encuentran totalmente remodelados
el hall principal, el lobby, las cajas, Informes y la cafetería
Yes Café. Adicionalmente funcionan tres aulas diseñadas
especialmente para niños (de 4 y 5 años), con sus respectivos
baños acondicionados para su uso exclusivo. En el segundo
nivel se halla, dentro de la zona ampliada, un moderno
SAC – Self Access Centre, donde los estudiantes tienen
acceso a diversos materiales didácticos que los ayudan a
complementar los conocimientos adquiridos en clase, y en la
zona remodelada se ubica la sala de profesores, totalmente
acondicionada y equipada. Del segundo al quinto nivel se
cuenta con 68 aulas. El edificio cuenta, asimismo, con un
sistema centralizado de aire acondicionado.
La remodelación y ampliación también incluyó la construcción
de una escalera presurizada y la ampliación de las dos
escaleras existentes, a fin de facilitar el desplazamiento de
los estudiantes. Se instaló un ascensor panorámico y a las
fachadas se les dio un acabado moderno con vidrio templado
y aluminio compuesto.
El BRITÁNICO San Miguel cuenta con todas las condiciones
necesarias para que sus estudiantes aprendan el idioma inglés
en un ambiente moderno y agradable.

Exceeded my expectations

Luis Cárdenas, Winner of the Scholarship for Excellence 2010-II
A year ago I learned I would travel to London thanks to a scholarship from the
BRITÁNICO. At once, I started imagining what my life there would be like. Now
that I’m back after an unforgettable month, I can say that London exceeded
everything I’d expected.
I really loved the multicultural atmosphere of that bustling city. Forget the
stereotype of the British being reserved and stand-offish. Everyone was always nice
and helpful. I chatted with random people, heard umpteen accents, met up with
friends, took countless photographs and simply felt part of the teeming streets.
I couldn’t help noticing the cleanliness of the city and the efficiency of the transport.
By tube one always arrives on time everywhere. And roaming about by doubledecker gives you a delightful view, especially if you go downtown.

The London Eye, the Victoria & Albert Museum, St Paul’s Cathedral, London Bridge.
These are only some of the many landmarks that left a lasting impression on me.
But for some inexplicable reason, Hyde Park appealed to me the most. Perhaps it had to do with
the renowned Speakers’ Corner. I remember spending my Sundays there listening to the most
eccentric and contentious speakers and hecklers I’ve ever met. Although the wide range of accents
posed a serious challenge to me, I ended up getting used to them.
As for the course, it was a thoroughly rewarding experience. Above all, I found it hugely beneficial,
since it gave me the necessary feedback on my mistakes so as to be able to communicate more
effectively. International House caters for your individual needs and its state-of-the-art facilities
makes the learning process easier and more enjoyable.
On the whole, London is a great place to visit and I hope to come back one day. Thanks to the
BRITÁNICO for giving me this unique opportunity. It’s up to you to be the next winner!

It always seems impossible until it’s done

Renzo Nolasco, Winner of the Scholarship for Excellence 2010-III
It’s hard to explain how I felt when I got off the plane, a mix of feelings rushed through my head:
excitement, fear, amazement and happiness. My dream had come true, at last! I remember when I first
read the BRITÁNICO news about some winners of some scholarship, I thought it was impossible for me
to get it; my expectations were quite low but when I got my FCE results, it all vanished from my mind.
I believe a month was not enough to understand and explore London fully but I made the most of it
from the beginning. I must say that my landlady and my landlord made feel like I was part of their
family and made my stay enjoyable. Even though this multicultural country was completely different
to Peru, I got used to London. Attending International House classes everyday was an enriching
experience as I was able to make new friends from all over the world, acknowledge culture and
improve my English skills a lot, thanks to the BRITÁNICO I used my English every single day.

Visiting many places such as Big Ben, the Houses of parliament, the London Eye, Madam Tussauds,
The British Museum, etc (I could keep going until I run out of paper) was incredible. Even wandering
round was just amazing. There’s a lot to see in London; you just wouldn’t have time to visit every
place. I remember getting lost when finding my way home but Londoners are
always willing to help. I often heard, “Sorry”, “Never mind”. That’s what I like
most about Londoners - they never kick up a fuss. I understand what “Mind the
gap” means; I didn’t have the foggiest idea what this was about but found it out
when taking the tube which was always on time. There were many rainy days but
they didn’t stop me from having a good time .
It was amazing how I was able to communicate with my mates from all over the
world, English was, is and will always be vital for us to learn.
In short, I have nothing else to say but to thank the BRITÁNICO as this one-in-alifetime opportunity has helped me broaden my horizons indeed. I honestly think no
matter how high your aim is, nothing is impossible if you do your best . Let nothing
stand in your way of achieving something you desire.

Unexpected? I think so...

Diego Cabrera, Winner of the Scholarship for Excellence 2010-II
I honestly never imagined that I could ever win the scholarship. When I heard about it, I
thought, “I will never win the scholarship; I’m not lucky enough.”
When I finished the FCE exam, I thought, “If I get at least a C, I will be the happiest boy on
earth.” I was exhausted. However when I was told I had got an A and some time later that I had
won the scholarship, I realized that you don’t have to be a lucky person, just a persevering one.
I have to thank Lizbeth Nieves, my teacher for the advanced course, all my other teachers and
friends who always trusted in me. I also have to admit that if it weren’t for listening to my
favourite bands, I could never have reached the necessary level of English to pass the exam.
Finally I would like to thank the BRITÁNICO for giving me the chance to go to such a beautiful
country. I’m sure I will never forget this trip.
Incredible but true…
When I started studying at the BRITÁNICO, I realised that there were lots of teenagers who
knew how to express themselves in English and, although I couldn’t understand many things, I
decided that I would try to do my best. It wasn’t difficult as all my teachers made it really easy
to improve my English.
I soon discovered that, apart from gaining speaking or listening skills, I was obtaining general
knowledge and improving my argumentation skills due to the discussion activities that we had.
I consider that learning a language makes you look at things from a different point of view;
learning a language is expanding your world view.
When the students who met the requirements were called to the stage, I got really nervous. It
came as a surprise to us when it was announced that we had all won the scholarship to London.
It took me several seconds to assimilate the good news.
I want to thank the BRITÁNICO for this opportunity that I’ve been given and my teachers,
especially my advanced teacher, Gisela Esteban, and my FCE practice course teacher, Juan José
Lalupú. I’d also like to thank my family for supporting me and giving me the strength to fulfil
my goals.

We challenge you to use your imagination to capture the
spirit of the London 2012 Games. Let us have your picture
by Wednesday 6 July.

Competition rules are as follows:
1. The competition is open to all Britanico students aged 5 to
16.
2. Winning entries will be selected from four age groups:
5-7; 8-10; 11-13; 14-16.
3. The deadline for entries is Wednesday 6 July. Entries
should be submitted to your local Britanico or to the
British Embassy, Torre Parque Mar piso 22, Av. Larco 1301,
Miraflores.
4. The painting or coloured drawing should be on an paper
no bigger than A1 flipchart size (810x590mm) and on
one side only. Winning pictures will be turned into large
paintings on walls at the British Residence. So simple
pictures that will be easier to reproduce will be more likely
to win.
5. The first name, last name and age of entrant should be
written on the back of the drawing, together with details
of the Britanico centre at which they study.
6. A jury composed of members of British Embassy and
Britanico staff will select the winning painting or drawing
in each group by 13 July.
7. Prizes will be given to the winner and two runners up in
each age category.
8. The Embassy will keep all paintings and drawings
submitted. These may be used in a London 2012 picture
display.

Elección del Consejo
Directivo 2010-2011 del
BRITÁNICO
El BRITÁNICO eligió a su nuevo Consejo Directivo para el
período 2011-2012, el cual será presidido por el ingeniero
Juan Lira, quien reemplaza a Cecilia Bentín de Cruchaga. La
señora Bentín ha concluido su importante gestión luego de
tres años en el cargo.
El Ing. Juan Lira hace entrega de un plato recordatorio
a la Sra. Cecilia Bentín, en reconocimiento a la labor
realizada durante su gestión.
BRITÁNICO Lima: Ganador de la Reciclatón
El lunes 30 de mayo, en las instalaciones del BRITÁNICO Lima,
se llevó a cabo la ceremonia de premiación de la Reciclatón, que
abarcó nuestros once centros de enseñanza. Los ganadores son:

For the 6th consecutive year, and as part of our permanent
professional development programme, a group of BRITÁNICO
teachers had the invaluable opportunity to attend a course
with specialist tutors from INTERNATIONAL HOUSE London the world-renowned centre of excellence in English Language
Teaching. 80 BRITÁNICO teachers and staff demonstrated their
keen interest and commitment by attending in full and above all
by participating actively and enthusiastically on the course. As in
previous years, International House tutors were impressed by the
quality and level of professionalism of BRITÁNICO teachers.

TKT tests knowledge about the teaching of English to speakers of other languages -in three different modules- and concentrates
on the knowledge needed by all English Language teachers.

Have you asked yourself recently about things that happen to
you? There are many things that happen to each of us that
make us think about our lives, such as the different people,
countries or scenery that surround us.
Smartphones, the internet and other such gadgets can lead
us to focus on technological skills rather than expanding our
horizons. That was what made me realise that my students
should know more than only English and I took advantage of
their natural taste for research by giving them the opportunity
to dream and choose the country they would like to visit one
day and search for information about it. The name of the
project was “Broaden your mind”. I was really amazed by the
outcomes. They enjoyed it a lot and could produce more than
I had expected. Finally, I can say they fulfilled my expectations
as usual. Congratulations, Basic 10.

or Ronaldo - do they ring a bell with you?
Of course! They are celebrities, famous and followed by
young people. That’s why my B1 and B7 students prepared
a collage of pictures, showing their favourite celebrities’
personal information: their family, homes, likes and dislikes
and even curiosities about them. I was really surprised to see
the commitment they showed, using colourful pictures in
Power Point presentations including music and video clips.
They all seemed proud of the job they did, using the language
they learnt to say everything about their idols, asking
questions and interacting with their fellow students. Indeed,
even my B1 students were deeply involved, enthusiastically
using elementary grammar and vocabulary. Regarding my B7
students, it was a perfect exercise to recall tenses they have
seen so far, incorporating different topics and using more
complex grammar. To my surprise, both groups made their
presentations feeling relaxed and willing to speak about what
they like. It was a practical experience to develop oral skills in
a safe environment - for some of them, an important first.
In fact, I also learnt a lot about current trends and show
business. I felt totally rewarded by your perseverance and the
results you all got, dear students. Thank you for that, keep up
the work and carry on until the end!

Don Tetto pronto en Lima
Con un nuevo tema sonando en la radio peruana: “Mi error”, segundo sencillo de su
disco Miénteme-prométeme, la banda de rock colombiana anuncia nueva visita a Lima,
esta vez para ser parte estelar del concurso de bandas de garaje que realiza una conocida
emisora de radio. Así como se lee, Carlos Leongómez, Jaime Medina, Diego Pulecio y
Jaime Valderrama llegan a nuestra ciudad para presentar en vivo el mismo show que
los ha llevado a tocar en escenarios de Bogotá, México y diversas ciudades de Estados
Unidos.
Por lo pronto, el videoclip de “Mi error” ya ha conseguido más de un millón de visitas en
el canal oficial que la banda tiene en YouTube (www.youtube.com/dontettotv), además

Con el deseo de promover el ejercicio de las artes manuales,
una vez más nuestros alumnos participaron en novedosos
talleres de manualidades que el BRITÁNICO ofrece mes a mes
y con los que celebramos no sólo el día sino el mes de las
mamás.
obras poniendo cada uno su sello personal. En el centro San
Miguel, los asistentes lograron manejar con gran destreza las
herramientas de bisutería y produjeron finos juegos de pulsera
y aretes con cuentas de madreperla y cristal de murano. En
San Isidro los alumnos intervinieron en la preparación del
postre tiramisú, haciendo la delicia de los asistentes.
En los centros de Los Jardines y San Borja se realizaron talleres
de pintura en trupán en los que los participantes pintaron
y decoraron un práctico portallaves creando texturas,
empleando pincelada seca y adornando con aplicaciones
del mismo material. En Pueblo Libre, también en taller de
trupán, los alumnos trabajaron un portaCD, con relieves,
sobre húmedo, entre otras técnicas, y produjeron bellas
Y con este atractivo programa tuvimos la oportunidad de
rendir homenaje a las mamás, a quienes les deseamos muchas
felicidades.
