to 8:30 p.m., on Saturday, July 14,
from 10 a.m. to noon and from 3
p.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, July
15, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
All San Antonio residents and
military personnel are welcome to
audition for the opportunity to win
cash prizes.
“Aspiring performers should consider auditioning because it gives
them a chance to perform in public
and polish their performances. Plus,
it’s fun,” Cultural Program Manager

Shayla Rivera returns to S.A.

Beat the heat and spend time
indoors at River City Comedy
Club July 4-8 as comedian
Shayla Rivera lights up the
stage.
Rivera is an 18-year veteran
of comedy and will be in town
this weekend. This time in the
Alamo City, Rivera might talk
about healthcare and will be
debuting her food truck.
“I’m going to have a taco
truck that’s really going to be
hot dog truck. I’m going to
call it diversity dog and forget
the mustard and ketchup now
you have to put some chile and
avocado on it. It really makes it
better anyway,” Rivera joked.
“Ketchup and mustard are
very much last century. We’re
changing, with our spices alone
we’re going to make this country better.”
In reality Rivera will have
nothing of the sort at her show
nor will she talk about healthcare. As always she’s looking
to give her fan a good time and

finally landing a career in comedy. She will be in San Antonio July

some laughs.
“I’m spiritually irreverent. I
don’t pay too much homage to
anything in particular,” she said.
“I think it’s a great time to talk
about where we’re at because
we’re all on the same boat, the
ship called America.”
“Fans can expect to walk out
of there a little younger because
they laughed for a good while
and be a little bit less stressed,”
added Rivera.

Ayotte’s take: “The Amazing
Spider-Man”
“The Amazing Spider-Man” is
mediocre at best. The film had an
uphill battle from the get go as the
previous three movies in the franchise were solid.
This particular installment of
Spider-Man didn’t bring anything
new or fresh to the table that would
make it memorable. However,
Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy) and
the knee-high stockings she struts
throughout the film are quite unforgettable.
Beyond Stone the movie is
like any other comic book-based
film—superhero fights villain, tie
in a sappy love story and top it off
with a perfect ending.
As the prequel to first three
Spider-Man movies you get some
insight on Peter Parker/SpiderMan’s parents, you meet Uncle
Ben and learn how Parker becomes
Spider-Man. Moreover you get to
see Parker develop into the refined
superhero as he struggles to fine
tune his new found abilities. It’s
nice to get the other side of the
story, but Director Marc Webb
failed to provide the “wow” factor
a film like this needs.
On the plus side, Andrew Garfield (Peter Parker/Spider-Man)
was perfectly cast along with
Stone. Garfield shows his depth
as an actor and is convincing as a
dopey Peter Parker turned superhero. Filling Tobey Maguire shoes
isn’t easy -- but Garfield blew the
performance out of the water.
There’s also no denying that
Stone is dynamite and lights up the
screen as a blonde beauty. She’s
Parker’s obvious love interest
throughout but they make a good
couple. But I still think Emma
and I would be a better fit in real
life. In this film she’s everything
anybody could want in a woman:
strong-willed, smart, sexy, witty
and willing to die for her man.
Other actors in the film such as
Martin Sheen (Uncle Ben), Ryhs
Ifans (The Lizard/Dr. Curt Connors) and Denis Leary (Captain
Stacy) deserve mention as their
performances made the movie that
much more tolerable. Two of the
three die in the film but it doesn’t
matter because the real stars are
Garfield and Stone.
Fans of the franchise with high
expectations will ultimately be
the film’s demise because it just
doesn’t live up to the hype. In
fact, I would describe the movie
as rather pedestrian. The graphics
are visually stunning in IMAX 3D
but does not make up for the film’s
mediocrity.
It’s definitely a film you can take
the whole family to -- but unless
you are a die-hard Spider-Man fan
I would advise folks not to take too
much stock in the movie. Casual
observers will be better off waiting
till the film can be rented.
“The Amazing Spider-Man” is
two hours long and rated PG-13.
The film opens nationwide at midnight on July 3 in 3D, real 3D and
IMAX 3D.
Wolfe’s take: “Katy Perry:
Part of Me”
Katy Perry’s autobiographical
movie is a little bit MTV-reality
show meets the silver screen – but
the young pop princess explodes
in 3-D and the behind-the-scenes
takes will delight her fans.
From a world of sassy grandmas
to a devastating divorce, the documentary offers a very personal perspective of Katy Perry’s life. “Part
of Me” follows the international
pop star on her 2011 “California
Dreams Tour” with a grand total
of 124 sold-out arena concerts all
over the world. The success of the
film is that it captures the quality of
the excitement and hype of all that
rumbles beneath the labor-intensive
effort of an international music

ta”, por su papel protagónico en
la telenovela “Destilando amor”,
Angélica Rivera cambió las telenovelas de Televisa para casarse
con un político, quien ahora
resulta será el nuevo presidente
de México, y su nueva casa será
la residencia presidencial Los
Pinos.
Como resultado, cada vez más
los medios de comunicación afirman que ahora Rivera tiene el
papel más grande de su vida, y
una vida real de telenovela.
Nacida el 2 de agosto de 1970
en la Ciudad de México, Angélica Rivera Hurtado comenzó su
carrera artística desde muy chica
como modelo y en certámenes
de belleza.
Su interés por la actuación le
hizo acudir a la locación donde se
grababa el video de “Macumba”,
una canción de la famosa actriz
mexicana Verónica Castro, quien

El legado del padre de John, quien
combatió en la Segunda Guerra Mundial

Mi padre llevaba siempre libros
de crucigramas doblados en el
bolsillo de atrás del pantalón.
Las páginas, manchadas de café
y los gastados fragmentos de pala
bras descoloridas, el tinte corrido
sobre la página y los restos del
viejo lápiz de plomo que opacaba
sus palabras, haciéndolas ilegibles,
es lo que me viene a la mente.
Elaboraba cada crucigrama en cada
una de las páginas.
Mi padre también leía constantemente. Lo que prefería leer era
Selecciones. Con frecuencia había
un ejemplar bien gastado sobre
su mesa de noche, las esquinas
dobladas donde hubiera dejado
de leer la noche anterior. Volvía a
leer las mismas historias una y otra
vez. Cuando me llegaba por fin el
Selecciones, podía trazar bien las
páginas desgastadas que señalaban
las notas históricas y las historias
sobre la segunda guerra mundial.
Mi padre fue veterano de la
Segunda Guerra Mundial. Sirvió
bajo el mando del general Patton
en la División Armada 12, Bata
llón Armada de Infantería 66.
Participó en el día de la invasión
aliada de Normandía, combatió
atravesando toda Europa, y sobrevivió la Batalla de las Árdenas,
también conocida como la Batalla
del Bulge, pero rara vez hablaría de
la guerra, ni de su juventud, salvo
después de unas cuantas cervezas.
En uno de esos raros momentos,
se perdería en una profunda nostalgia, secándose las lágrimas de
los ojos de un sopetón, recordando
a los amigos perdidos y hablando
con mucho respeto de los hombres
había matado. Describiría con lujo
de detalles las noches amargamente
frías y desveladas, largos días sin
descanso, y de la congelación del
pie que le llevó a seis meses de
rehabilitación en un hospital en
Nueva York. Años más tarde, ha
bría que amputarle ese mismo pie.
Se le rompía la voz al hablar
de una refugiada alemana que
había conocido, y de haber vuelto
a Alemania a buscarla. No la
volvió a ver en persona, pero sí
mantuvieron una correspondencia
durante muchos años posteriores a
la guerra, muy para el disgusto de
mi madre.
Mi padre creció en el entorno de
una sociedad dividida por razas, en
la que se consideraba que los mexicanos y los mexicano-americanos
eran ciudadanos de segunda clase.
Había sido pobre de niño. Con cierta amargura, recordaba las fuentes
de agua “para blancos solamente” y
las películas de viernes por la tarde
donde había un balcón reservado
“para mexicanos solamente”.
Cuando yo tenía seis años, mi
padre me llevó a la biblioteca
pública para sacarme una tarjeta.
Como resultado, me convertí en
ávido lector. Me leí cada uno de
los libros de los estantes de nuestra
pequeña biblioteca.
Leí sobre la Segunda Guerra
Mundial, la guerra civil estadounidense, la intolerancia racial y la
temprana lucha por los derechos
civiles. Esto me llevó a un amor
por la historia y la geografía y a

“France Football” dice que Casillas “merecería” un Balón de Oro
(EFE).- La revista “France
Football”, publicación francesa
que creó en 1956 el Balón de Oro,
aseguró que el capitán de la selección española, el guardameta Iker
Casillas, “merecería” ese prestigioso galardón al mejor jugador
del año.
“Por el conjunto de su obra, por
su permanencia en la cumbre con
la que España se casó en 2008,
pero también por su tranquilizadora presencia, su personalidad,
su influencia y su maestría, Casi
llas merecería, a fin de cuentas, un
Balón de Oro”, señala la revista en
el especial dedicado a los mejores
jugadores de la Eurocopa.
En todo el campeonato, el portero de “La Roja” solo encajó un
gol (si contar la tanda de penaltis
de la semifinal contra Portugal),
en el primer partido de la fase de
grupos, contra Italia.
Desde entonces y hasta que
levantó la copa de campeón, el
portero que pertenece “a la leyenda
del fútbol” acumuló 509 minutos
imbatido, cuajando “una final
perfecta, con salidas aéreas, paradas de reflejos y gestos técnicos
siempre seguros y agudos”, agrega
“France Football”, que recuerda
que Casillas suma 137 encuentros
con la selección, 100 victorias y
75 partidos con la portería a cero.
La revista, en su edición digital,
ya evocó esa posibilidad, al día
siguiente de que España derrotase
por 4-0 a Italia en la final de la
Eurocopa y lograse la triple corona
(Eurocopa-Mudial-Eurocopa),
algo que no había conseguido ninguna selección en la historia.
“Los jugadores de la ‘Nazionale’
tuvieron, además, la mala suerte de
topar con un ‘San’ Iker Casillas
infranqueable (m. 27, m.28, m. 32
y m. 51). Vencedor de la Liga con
el Real Madrid y capitán de los
tres últimos torneos logrados por
la selección, la última muralla de
‘La Roja’ tendrá seguro algo que
decir durante la próxima edición
del Balón de Oro”, escribía “France
Football” tras el título logrado por
España.
Desde 2010, el Balón de Oro
se fusionó con el título de Mejor
Jugador del Año que concedía la
FIFA y su designación corresponde
a los capitanes de las selecciones
nacionales, los entrenadores de
estas y a la prensa especializada.
El último galardonado fue el
argentino del FC Barcelona Lionel
Messi, que fue proclamado mejor
jugador del mundo en 2009, 2010
y 2011.
Solo dos jugadores de nacionalidad española han recibido ese
premio desde su creación, Alfredo
Di Stéfano (Real Madrid) en 1959
y Luis Suárez (FC Barcelona) en
1960.
La revista destacó igualmente
el trabajo del lateral zurdo de la
campeona, Jordi Alba, que “dina
mizó el juego de España”, como el
mejor en su puesto.
También el galardón al mejor
central recayó en un español,
Sergio Ramos, que enamoró a los
periodistas de la prestigiosa revista
por su “enorme” partido de semifinales, penalti a lo Panenka incluido,
y por su llegada al área contraria.
En el centro del campo, Iniesta
fue otro de los elegidos por “France
Football” en el olimpo de los mejores por su capacidad para ser “una
inagotable fuente de inspiración
para un equipo”.
“Siempre transmite confianza,
ofrece una buena solución y bonifica los balones que recibe”, agrega
sobre el albaceteño la publicación,
que concede también una mención
de honor a Xavi, que sigue siendo
“mejor que muchos otros” aunque
no haya alcanzado su mejor nivel.
El grupo de seis jugadores des
tacados por la revista lo completan
dos italianos, Andrea Pirlo en el
centro del campo, por su clase,
su experiencia y su saber hacer, y
Mario Balotelli, “genial en la semifinal” contra Alemania y “discreto
en la final, pero siempre imprevisible”, agregó la revista.

El circo Ringling Bros. llega “Sobrecargado”

El circo Ringling Brothers
and Barnum & Bailey llega al
Alamodome de San Antonio
hoy con una nueva edición
cargada de nuevas estrellas
para presentar del 4 al 8 de julio uno de los espectáculos del
circo más grandes del mundo.
Con decenas de payasos,
trapecistas, malabaristas y animales, los integrantes provocarán la sonrisa de las familias
y sus pequeños en el gran
espectáculo “Sobrecargado”,
conocido en Estados Unidos
como “Fully Charged”, tema
con el cual corre el circo este
año.
“El circo trae seis elefantes, 22 caballos y 14 tigres”,
explicó Alex Vargas, quien
pertenece a la sección de
animales. “Desde pequeño
siempre tuve la inquietud del
cuidado de los animales y
de trabajar con ellos. Ahora
trabajo con los elefantes y me
encanta”, añadió.
El circo también estuvo
presente el año pasado en San
Antonio y dejó a los espectadores con muchas ganas de
regresar para verlo de nuevo.
Este año, el circo trae cientos de nuevas actividades que
los pequeños podrán disfrutar.
Antes de las funciones, el
público tendrá acceso a las
pistas para convivir con los
artistas encargados de darle
vida y magia a este gran show,
y podrán disfrutar bajo ningún
costo de una convivencia más
personalizada con los integrantes del equipo y con los
animales.
“Este es un circo que cambia
año con año, y por lo mismo
ahora tiene mucho más cosas
que ofrecer a la gente”, añadió
Vargas.
“El show que viene a San
Antonio es el Sobrecargado
porque hay alambristas de
Marruecos que caminan en
los hombros de sus compañeros y realizan una serie de
malabares a 35 pies de altura.
Además hay acróbatas rusos,
y en la pista del circo estará el
conocido domador Tabayara,
quien tendrá a su cargo a 15
tigres, algunos elefantes y
caballos”, agregó.
Por su parte, Vargas estará
presentándose con los seis
elefantes y mostrará su habilidad de domarlos ante grandes

“Yo soy de la cuarta gene
ración de artistas de circo.
Toda mi familia ha trabajado
en circo desde hace muchísimos años. Yo era trapecista y
acróbata y ahora trabajo con
animales, mi hermano fue el
cuarto hombre en el mundo
en realizar las cuatro vueltas
en el aire como trapecista, y
mi hermana hace triple salto
mortal”, dijo el experto, quien
durante 21 años ha formado
parte del circo.
“Ser parte de un circo es una
experiencia muy diferente y
se vive un ambiente muy bonito”, dijo Vargas. “Nosotros
trabajamos en equipo pero
somos como una familia que
se dedica al circo”.
Vargas asegura que Ringling
Brothers es también un circo
latino, ya que dentro de los
integrantes que lo forman se
encuentran muchos provenientes de Argentina, Brasil,
México, y otros países de
Latinoamérica.
El Alamodome será acondicionado especialmente para
presentar el show y para que
las familias no tomen la de-
cisión de quedarse en casa por
las altas temperaturas que no
permiten que la gente salga de
sus hogares.

The rocket’s red glare

Fourth of July has become
almost synonymous with fireworks. No one can deny that
when asked to picture Fourth
of July festivities they imagine
rockets and sparklers galore.
But the San Antonio Fire Department may have a different
answer.
When asked what role he believed fireworks play in Fourth
of July celebrations, Bexar
County Fire Marshal Craig
Roberts replied, “The Fourth
of July should be about you
and your family.” He went on
to list principles that make up
this American holiday’s core,
such as freedom and liberty.
Are Americans celebrating
dazzling firecrackers instead
of the true purpose behind the
Fourth of July?
Firefighters are not denying
American’s right to enjoy a
magnificent firework show.
Roberts even stated that the
San Antonio Fire Department’s
purpose was to help everyone
have “a fun, enjoyable Fourth
of July.” However, safety and
celebration must go hand in
hand in order for this to happen.
Assistant Fire Chief and Fire
Marshal Earl Crayton claimed
that many will want to make
up for last year’s significant
lack of fireworks caused by the
severe drought. But be warned.
Lighting fireworks in Bexar
County is a Class B misdemeanor with fines up to $1000.
In San Antonio the act counts
as a Class C misdemeanor with
fines between $200 and $2000.
Why such stringent rules? In
2010 alone, there were 1500
fires, eight deaths, 60 injuries,
and $360 million in damages.
Out of 2540 brush and grass
fires 1055 of those occurred in
the summer months. Crayton
warns everyone, “Don’t be the
one statistic.”
If these statistics don’t scare
you from lighting your own
fireworks, listen to firework
victim Gatlin Magee. After
losing his right index finger by
catching a renegade firework to
save his brother, Magee cautions, “Things can go wrong
in a split second.” Magee was
celebrating with friends until
the wind changed for the worse
and aimed the bottle rocket at
them.
In order to keep you safe and
prevent accidents such as Magee’s the Fire Department has
provided a list of safety rules:
• Always read and follow
manufacturer’s recommendations
• Have an adult present and
never give fireworks to children
• Only use fireworks outdoors
• Always have plenty of water available to extinguish a fire
should one start
• Never experiment or make
your own fireworks. Make sure
you only use fireworks purchased from a reliable licensed
seller
• Light only one firework at
a time
• Never re-light a “dud” firework. If a firework does not
work properly, wait 15 to 20
minutes, and then soak it in a
bucket of water and dispose of
it properly.
• Store fireworks in a cool,
dry place
• Never throw or point fireworks at other people
• Never carry fireworks in
your pocket
• Do not shoot fireworks in
metal or glass containers
• Wear eye protection and
never have any part of the body
over the firework
• Select an area free of dry
grasses or other dead vegetation to shoot fireworks.
• Do not use fireworks when
the weather forecast calls for
wind above 10 mph.
While some of these tips are
common sense, other warnings,
such as not using fireworks
with winds over 10 mps, are
less obvious. In fact, the forecast calls for winds over 10
mph every evening this week.

una intolerancia duradera contra el
racismo y la discriminación.
Me identifiqué con las historias
que contaba mi padre de los hombres que pelearon con tanto valor
y de sus propias batallas con la
discriminación antes de la guerra.
Con el tiempo, iba incorporando
las narrativas a mi vida, tomando
de ellas valores que me orientan
hasta hoy. De joven, me comprometí de por vida con hacer frente
a aquellos quienes pretenderían
degradar a otros.
Los historiadores del pueblo
chicano se refieren a los veteranos
de la segunda guerra mundial de
ascendencia mexicana como la
“generación mexicano-americana”. Eran hombres orgullosos
que llevaban dos banderas: una

mexicana, la otra estadounidense.
A pesar de ser tildados “esos malditos mexicanos” en casa, en la
guerra en el extranjero surgieron
como “americanos” – hombres
valientes cuyas hazañas les ganaron respeto como liberadores
en Europa. Se demostraron muy
capaces en el campo de batalla y
en el ámbito mundial.
La “generación mexicano-ameri
cana” que volvió a casa de la gue
rra, entre ellos mi padre, volvieron
transformados, preparados a luchar
por sus derechos como ciudadanos
de los Estados Unidos, resueltos a
reclamar la posición que les correspondía en la sociedad.

El escolta universitario Marcus
Denmon, de 22 años de edad y
nativo de Kansas City (Estado de
Missouri),de pequeño soñó algún
día ser jugador de baloncesto
colegial con su equipo favorito
Missouri Tigers.
Años después pudo vivir plenamente su deseo al convertirse en
escolta estelar de dicha quinteta
felina, donde durante cuatro años
dejó establecidas varias marcas
difíciles de igualar.
Denmon, en su carrera colegial,
tuvo acción en 141 partidos, dejando promedio de juego de 12.6
puntos encestados por partido, así
como 3.4 rebotes, 1.7 asistencias,
1.3 robos de balón, y .455 en dispa
ros al aro, anotando 597 de 1,311
disparos al aro.
En triples, Denmon estableció
marca personal de .401 en disparos
triples, ejecutando 283 tiros buenos
en 705 intentos.
Todas estas cifras lo dejaron bien
ubicado en el circuito universitario
Big 12, donde ganó dos designaciones como el mejor basquetbolista
colegial, así como su elección al

Living in the age of identity theft

Having your identity stolen is
obviously one of the worst things
to deal with. Identity theft comes
in many forms that it cannot be easily defined. However, it is essentially when someone assumes your
identity to obtain money, medical
treatment or other things that the
thief could not get on their own.
The majority of ID theft cases
happen due to the voluntary sharing of personal information. That
means that someone did not forcibly take the victim’s information
– that is, it was given through coercion or by request. Typically, this
means that the thief misrepresented
his or herself to obtain the information from the unassuming victim.
Other times, ID theft is committed by a close friend or relative
– someone with easy-access to a
victim’s bank statements, checks
and other financial documents.
Is there any full-proof method
to prevent ID theft? I think you
know the answer to that. This
should not deter you from doing
things to lessen your chances of
being a victim.
Here are a few items:
1) Buy a shredder: having a
shredder can give you enormous
peace of mind. You can fully
utilize your shredder to get rid of
those pesky credit card applications, old documents with your
personal information, bank statements, phone bills, etc. It is very
important to do this before you
throw these items out. Dumpster
diving does exist – talk to any
engaged apartment manager and
they will share their experience
with you (maybe more than you
want to hear).
2) Diligently go over your bank
statements, other financial statements and credit report (if you
have it). Look for any item that
looks odd or suspicious – you are
dyke (dı̄k) 1. be honest with
yourself. you’re not thinking
of “an embankment that
holds back and controls
water.” the problem is, words
like “dyke” and “faggot” are
so commonly used as insults
these days, it’s really hard
to remember a time when

diferentes gobiernos del mundo saludaron al virtual nuevo presidente

permita la integración productiva
con América del Norte”.

conocidos hasta hoy.
López Obrador afirmó en una rueda de prensa que no está dispuesto a

At the movies...
want to know: who is Katy Perry,
the person?
According to the meticulously
fashioned film, underneath all of
the candy-colored costumes and
bright performances is a determined young woman willing to
fight for her career to the point
where she got the golden ticket
and the chance to live adventure
of a lifetime.
As a fan of Katy Perry’s music,
I figured that if nothing else, I
would at least enjoy the musical
performances in the film, but what
I fell in love with was Perry’s story.
Together with the “Team Perry”
either submit a CD and/or DVD or
email a YouTube link and an MP3
file to the San Antonio Parks and
Recreation Department to be considered in the competition.
Participants are judged in various categories. Military active
duty personnel will compete in the
Council District of their assigned
military base.
Winners will be named in each of
the 10 council district competitions
and will be posted online at www.
sanantonio.gov/parksandrec in July.
After the auditions, the actual
competitions will be scheduled and
held in all 10 council districts and a
crew, the movie chronicles the artist from her earliest musical roots
as a 15-year old Christian singer to
the pop sensation that she is today.

And it’s quite true. After watching this film, I feel like Perry and
I are old friends who just caught
up over coffee. Even if you’re
not a fan, her story is terrific and
inspirational.
The 3-D effects are about the
best I have ever seen – and the
film moves along without a boring moment. For Katy Perry fans
– this one is a must-see this week.
For those who appreciate a good
uplifting yarn – this movie is worth
coming out of the heat as well. If
you love espionage and action-ad-
venture, look to the other summer
blockbusters available at the local
metroplex this week.
This film is rated PG for some
suggestive content, language,
thematic elements and brief smoking. It opens nationwide on July
5 in 3D.

SAC to host teacher
workshop with S.A.
Writing Project

San Antonio College is partnering
with the San Antonio Writing Project
(SAWP) to hold a teacher writing
workshop. The Open Institute on College and Career Readiness in writing is
“Making Connections with Expository
and Persuasive Writing.”
San Antonio teachers are invited to
spend a week on a college campus and
learn from college writing professors
what college-level writing is really
like. Cost is $150.
Following the National Writing
Project model of teachers-teachingteachers, participating teachers will
learn more strategies for connecting
reading and writing and teaching expository and persuasive writing. They
will see demonstrations of successful
writing lessons from experienced
SAWP teacher consultants and read
selections from “What is College-
Level Writing” by Patrick Sullivan,
“Readicide” by Kelly Gallagher, “The
Literature Workshop” by Sheridan
Blau, and “Designing Writing Assignments” by Traci Gardner.
Teachers will also spend the week
collaborating to develop a writing
assignment geared toward collegereadiness standards they can use in the
classroom next year.
