May 2016 UNIONEER
Official Publication of Local 6215 Communications Workers of America—AFL-CIO Volume 52 Number 2 May 2016 Has the Union got our back, or do you have the Union’s back? by: Nancy Brown, President It’s kind of like the chicken or the egg. Which comes first? I commend everyone who participated in the Employee Experience Rally April 29th at AT&T Headquarters on shareholder’s meeting day. You had your Union’s back and the Union has yours. This rally expressed to AT&T that the employee experience equals the customer experience. We were the professionals we are expected to be every day. When I invited the Dallas Morning News watchdog he questioned if we would still have the rally due to the weather conditions. I quickly pointed out our members report and work in all kinds of weather conditions every day and we would be there rain or shine. God blessed us with good weather conditions till our job was complete. I was proud of you and to be your President! The answer to the question is both. The Union has your back and you showed you have the Union’s back! 2 UNIONEER Local 6215 Communications Workers of America Affiliated With AFL-CIO President Nancy Lee Brown Executive Vice President Nancy Hall Vice President Ron Swaggerty Secretary Mary Linhart Treasurer Anita Learned ————————————————— Editor Connie Orms If you have changed your address, please contact: [email protected] Connie Orms, Editor UNIONEER 1408 N. Employee Experience Rally UNIONEER Solidarity by: Anita Learned, Treasurer On April 29, 2016, 400-500 people (give or take a few thousand) VOLUNTEERED their time to participate in CWA Local 6215’s AT&T Employee Experience Rally. The “sea of red” that day was amazing! I was very proud of each of you! And, yes, I had to order more shirts Monday morning. Our rally really defined the word SOLIDARITY. That’s what a union is – all of us standing together, letting the company know we will talk together, walk together, picket together and strike together! We are UNITED! I would also like to commend all the folks that came to the April union meeting. We had a packed house. The only reason it was “standing room only” is because some of you are afraid to come sit in the 1st two rows I don’t know if you’ve ever played that game where you whisper something into someone’s ear, then they turn and tell the next person, so forth and so on, then the last person has to say what they were told. And I can guarantee it will never be what person #1 said. Even if the phrase is “brown cows give chocolate milk.” By the time it reaches the last person, even if it’s a group of four, it will NOT be the same as originally told! That’s why it’s so vital for you to come to the meetings. Remember, YOU are the union. If you don’t come to the meetings, then you stand a bigger chance of not getting ALL of the story. Plus, it gives you a chance to mingle with the officers, Chiefs and stewards, and probably the biggest benefit is networking with other members. United We Bargain – Divided We Beg “Remember, YOU are the union.” 3 4 UNIONEER Mobility School March 2016 Armed with knowledge and ready to serve you! UNIONEER 5 CWA—The Community Minded Union by: Nancy Hall, Executive Vice President We did an outstanding job with the “Baskets for the Homeless” City Square was founded in 1988 by Larry James as a small food pantry and has grown into a farreaching human development organization offering a wide range of social services benefiting our whole community. Their latest endeavor will be opening soon. They are providing 50 cottages for the homeless. CWA was able to provide 55 baskets, for our new neighbors to help with their new homes. We provided basic supplies such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, cleaning supplies, paper towels, and toilet paper among other things. We owe special thanks to our community services chair, Reginald Small and Quincy Davis for making this a success. To all of you who participated THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Also, special thanks goes to Herb Keener for the wonderful pictures. When City Square called, our membership answered! Quincy Davis “WRAPS” himself totally in all community activities! Basket “Inspectors” Anita Learned and Kevin Canida Reginald Small “JUMPS” wholeheartedly in our projects to help others! 6 UNIONEER Employee Experience Rally Downtown Dallas UNIONEER 7 8 8 UNIONEER UNIONEER Claude Cummings being sworn in (with his wife Ruth by his side) at the 75th CWA National Convention Convention Claude Cummings accepting the District 6 COPE Award Mr. and Mrs. Claude Cummings 9 UNIONEER Rally at the AT&T Headquarters April 29, 2016 Local 6215 Pres.
