Portraiture
The following series of painting crafts people at work
originated from producing a large body of paintings
of a studio potter friend, Alex Shimwell. I was able to
paint on-location, dynamic images of an iconic process
synonymous with the area. The results were also a natural
form of unforced portraiture. Most artists are comfortable
to be recorded in the process of doing their craft.
Spending time working alongside Alex also encouraged
healthy thoughts of collaboration and ways of combining
skills and crossing the mediums of ceramics and painting.
The portraiture side of this exhibition shows that spirit of
collaborative work has been developed to working alongside
other local creatives, talking through our processes, ideas
for the future and hopefully promoting one another with the
final exhibition.
This is fitting with the motto of the city of Stoke-on-Trent,
‘Vis Unita Fortior’, United Strength is Stronger.

Charis Jones of Sculpted Steel banging
out a new set of tongs at the Victorian
Forge in Etruria Industrial Museum.
Charis drinks tea from a tall ceramic
beaker that holds at least a litre. I was
surprisingly cold stood next to the fire
and my ears still ring after 8 or so hours
stood next to her hammering metal
against metal.

Landscapes
After an intense period of animation productions, I have
really enjoyed getting the easel and paints outdoors again.
Ever the exhibitionist, I have positioned myself in not
so subtle spots around the city including the middle of
roundabouts, outside packed stadiums, the back of boats
and busy railway stations.
I seem to feed off the movement of people and painting the
impossible to capture, for example, summarising crowds or
transient objects and changing light.

This is my first allotment painting. I
enjoy the visual chaos of compact
compartmental growth. I had already
produced a drawing of this view but
thought it too important to leave
unpainted. A glorious sunny day
meant the final result came together
very quickly. Vale Park looms in the
background.

from invading our faceless retail park.
The only time I have ever complained in
a supermarket is when Morrisons Cafe
replaced the Reginald Haggar paintings
with the same generic coffee trade
imagery visible in every other Morrisons
Cafe up and down the country.

Stoke supporters walking to the Europa League, FC Thun game.
This calling of fans to the Britannia Stadium is a subject I have
long thought about, especially the sight of them trekking over
the A50 footbridge with the movement of traffic underneath. This
is my first response to that subject produced after developing a
taste for painting crowds at this year’s V Festival.
