Vision Health International
OUR MISSION
The mission of VHI is to improve the vision
health of medically underserved people in
developing countries by providing free-of-charge
professional surgical, medical, and educational
services at the invitation of the host country.
In addition to providing direct patient care, an
integral part of our mission is the capacity
building of local medical personnel and the
transfer of technology to the medical
communities of the countries served. Educational
activities include directed training of medical
personnel in the latest surgical techniques,
pre- and post-operative care, specialized
oculoplastic instruction, and patient exams. The
transfer of technology is accomplished through
donations of surplus surgical supplies and
equipment to local medical professionals to
allow for continuity of care.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
DEAR VHI SUPPORTERS
Dear Friends,
We were with Dr. Abernethy in 1986, our first
trip, in Quito, Ecuador. Originally planned for the
small rural town of Guaranda, the program was
relocated, at the last minute, to the capitol city due
to the insistence of the local ophthalmology society.
Apparently, they felt a need to keep an eye on our
work. Following that inauspicious beginning, we hit
one roadblock after another. The conditions at the
hospital were challenging, at best. We recall that our
volunteer nurses had a positive professional and
cultural exchange with their Ecuadorian counterparts, but we weren’t seeing as many patients as Dr.
Abernethy had hoped. Though growing frustrated
(to put it mildly), he remained committed to bringing
our team’s resources to as many patients as possible.
He worked late into the night, night after night,
“negotiating” with the powers-that-be to ensure the
project’s ultimate success. And we did succeed.
We’ve had many gratifying experiences and
life-changing moments with VHI since that first trip.
The example Dr. Rod Abernethy set, through his
dedication and his determination to succeed, in spite
of the obstacles, became an enduring trait of our
organization. We are fortunate to have been able to
turn over the “frustrated but effective leader” roles
to Cindy Goodale and Sarah Felknor following
Rod’s passing.
I want to thank VHI’s many participants and
supporters for making 2010 another productive year.
In spite of economic and social upheaval worldwide,
VHI conducted successful mission trips to Mexico,
Peru, and Costa Rica, where we were able to restore
or improve sight for hundreds of adults and
children.
It has been my good fortune to be a part of VHI
and its good work for the past 20 years. I was drawn
to the organization initially by its scope of activity
and the dynamic and caring nature of its incredible
caregivers. I am pleased to say, even as the organization has grown and changed over the years, VHI has
preserved its charm and remains wonderfully unique.
After all, the important things haven’t changed; we
still help to restore sight “one eye at a time.”
I look forward to 2011 and the years ahead,
as VHI continues its work to restore and improve
eyesight and prevent blindness throughout Latin
America.

VHI CELEBRATES ITS SILVER ANNIVERSARY
As is the way with many anniversaries and celebrations of
life’s significant mileposts, we tend to reflect less on where we
may be going than where it was we’ve been. And that’s the way it
should be, for experience is, after all, the best teacher. A Chinese
proverb advises that “a journey of a thousand miles must begin
with a single step.” As VHI, its participants and its supporters
pause to salute 25 years of good work and goodwill we should
be reminded where the inspirational idea of restoring the gift of
sight came from and where, when and how this organization
took its first step.
Ophthalmologist Rodney E. Abernethy and his wife, Beth,
loved Latin America. So did their children. On numerous
occasions the parents took advantage of an opportunity to visit
the kids and Latin America in conjunction with summer public
health programs conducted by Amigos de las Americas. On one
such trip, Dr. Abernethy noted, not surprisingly considering his
profession, that not a soul in the Ecuadorian village they were
visiting wore eyeglasses, though in his estimation a good many
should have been. During the following
summer the Abernethy’s went back to
Ecuador, this time with duffle bags filled
with donated eyeglasses. For the people of
Guaranda, Ecuador, who had little, if any,
access to vision health care, Dr. Abernethy
and his eyeglasses were nothing short of
heaven sent. But eyeglasses didn’t solve
every vision problem in the rural mountain town. Many Guarandans required
more than corrective lenses; they needed
cataract surgery.
With Scrub Nurse, Daisy Yee, Dr.
and Mrs. Abernethy returned once more
to Guaranda, this time accompanied
by daughter Janet and Cindy Goodale,
equipped to perform surgery. It was 1985
and something very special was beginning to take shape. Concluding that more
could be accomplished only with more doctors, nurses, supplies
and equipment, Dr. Abernethy placed a “want ad” in a national
medical publication. He hoped to recruit volunteer ophthalmologists and nurses and anesthesiologists with an interest in
restoring sight in Ecuador.
Over the next two years on return trips to Ecuador, an
intrepid brigade of doctors, nurses, and Peace Corps
volunteers endured—with a smile—what Dr. Ron Amalong
has described as “a combination of delight, hysteria, frustration,
and gratification.” The clinic in Cariamanga was conducted on
an outdoor patio, the windows in the operating room had no
glass or screens but provided access for a much needed breeze
every now and again, not to mention for the squadrons of flies
that made themselves perfectly at home on the operating field.
Lighting in the OR, when power was available, consisted of one
bare bulb, dangling from the ceiling. Throw in primitive roads
and flat tires, Spartan accommodations, flights into airports
garrisoned by gun-toting teenage soldiers, sometimes
inhospitable government officials, the always suspect cuisine and
water supply, and you get the picture.
“But you know,” recalls Kay Whitten, RN, “we were there for
the patients (700 patients were examined and 160 surgeries were
performed during two field programs). And the conditions only
brought us closer.”
For those tireless, gritty and compassionate volunteers back
in 1986 and 1987, long days of demanding yet gratifying work
did engender a heightened sense of dedication, camaraderie and
humor, personified, of course, in Dr. Abernethy. Dr. Rick Whitten
recalls a frustrated yet determined Abernethy as he negotiated late
into the night, almost every night, with local authorities in Quito
over every last detail of the field program, insisting with his
dauntless charm that the American volunteers will see as many
patients as there were to see. And just as plans were put in place
to do it all over again in 1988 this newly formed band of doctors,
nurses, and volunteers, committed as each of them were to
restoring the gift of sight, suddenly and tragically lost their
inspirational leader, the result of a pulmonary embolus. Thankfully, they never lost
their inspiration.
Determined to carry on her father’s work,
Janet Abernethy along with Dr. Amalong
laid the groundwork for a field program to
San Isisdro del General in the south of Costa
Rica, to be conducted over two weeks
beginning in late April 1989. Beth Abernethy, always the travel agent, perfected the
arrangements. As with the previous three
programs, success was exemplified in the
statistics: 1,452 patients were examined, 680
pairs of eyeglasses were dispensed, and 183
surgeries were performed, but what really
emerged from the trip was something even
more significant. That project confirmed for
all involved that not only could Dr. Abernethy’s work go on, it must go on. In the
Abernethy living room in Hillsborough, California a few months
after the San Isidro program had concluded, Beth, Janet, Dr.
Amalong, Cindy Goodale, Eileen Lynette, Jo Ann Nussutti, and
Dr. Richard Whitten roughed out the future for an organization
they would name Vision Health International.
All one has to do is look at the work performed and the lives
touched from 1985 forward—the close to 19,000 patients who
have been examined by ophthalmologists, perhaps for the first
time; the nearly 17,000 pairs of eyeglasses that have helped an
equal number of people to read or sew again, or go back to work;
the almost 5,000 adults and children who had nowhere else to
turn for vision care, and for whom surgery has restored not just
their vision, but their hopes and their families’ dreams for better
days ahead—and you can understand that what Dr. Abernethy
began 25 years ago has truly changed the world. He would, we
think, be pleased, humbled, but perhaps not too surprised by
what he started.
