Ruddington resident Mark is off to July's British Transplant Games
Nottingham City Hospital outpatient
Mark Brown is competing in
the British Transplant Games in
Liverpool from 28th to 31st July.
The Games, which have been run
annually since 1978, will see over
700 athletes participating in over
25 events, cheered on by over
1,250 supporters.
Mark suffered from the hereditary
condition Alports Syndrome,
which led to kidney failure at the
age of 25. After 20 months on
dialysis lasting for four hours a
day, three days a week, Mark had
a successful kidney transplant
in 1994.
and Bolton, winning medals in the
100m, bowls, darts and archery,
and a surprise gold in basketball
at the games in Newcastle and
Gateshead last year.
“I’ve been fortunate to represent
my country at a number of Winter
World Transplant Games, winning
medals in skiing, snowboarding
and curling. My younger brother
James also had a kidney transplant
11 years ago, suffering from the
same condition. There’s a bit of
sibling rivalry between us. We came
up against each other in the third
round of the darts competition
last year, and he won’t thank me
for saying that I breezed past him
before losing in the final.
“This was a real family affair as my
mum and dad came to watch, with
my dad scoring the match, and
my wife Jo who runs the charity
Transplant Sport, cheering me on.
“Every 10 minutes, somebody’s
name gets added to the donor
waiting list and three people die
daily because they can’t get the
organ they need. More than 6,000
people in the UK are currently
waiting for a transplant. But with
only 34% of the UK population
actually registered as organ donors,
the NHS Organ Donor Register
team says more work needs to be
done to raise awareness and urges
those on the donor register to share
their wishes with their loved ones.”

Organ Donor register, call 0300

He told The Local News: “It was
scary when I got the call to say
a transplant was available. My
condition was stable and - though
now a routine operation for the
specialists involved - still not
without risk. Thankfully it’s now 22
years since my transplant and it’s
still going strong. I’ve represented
the hospital by participating in
the British Transplant Games for
the past few years in Sheffield
“We’re competing in the darts again
this year – hopefully meeting in the
final. I’m also hoping to do well in
the archery, golf, lawn bowls and
discus this year. I’ve never tried the
discus before, but James and I said
we’d give it a go to see who can
get the furthest between us. Whilst
the games are fun to compete in,
the real aim it to showcase the
benefits of transplantation.

Ruddington photographer Paul Witney snaps up prestigious award
Ruddington photographer Paul
Witney has recently scooped a
prestigious photography award.
Paul (pictured right) won first and a
merit (second place) in this year’s
British Institute of Professional
Photography Annual Print Award in
the Architecture Section.
Paul won this award four years
out of the past five and says he is
absolutely thrilled at the win.
The winning image was of
Selfridges in the Birmingham
Bullring at night and the merit was
of Winchester Cathedral’s roof.
Paul has been a professional
photographer for over 30 years.
He first gained his Associateship
of the BIPP several years ago
and is currently working towards
his Fellowship.
Having previously owned one
of the largest portrait studios
in the Nottingham area, he has
also had a very impressive list of
commercial clients.
These include Royal Ordnance,
Texaco, local councils, a
government body, British
Aerospace, Heckler and Koch,
Jane’s Defence review (small arms),
Mercedes-Benz UK, Thomas Cook,
BGS Photo
Nottingham Forest FC and various
publishing companies through an
image picture library.
As a qualified pilot, Paul has
undertaken various aerial
photographic assignments.
He now shoots a wide variety
of images for clients, including
environmental portraits which are
shot in client’s homes, gardens or
local parks, including Ruddington
Country Park.
Video is now also an added string
to his bow with the ever-increasing
need for companies to show
corporate videos on their websites
and various social media platforms.

Popular East Leake teacher Steve passes away
Leaving Service
By Ryan Benjamin
The Leaving Service for rector
David Harper takes place at
Bingham Parish Church on Sunday
24th July.
East Leake Academy are mourning
the loss of former teacher Steve
Parry, who has passed away
age 68. The music and drama
teacher joined the school in
1973 under its old name, Harry
Carlton Comprehensive.
Despite officially retiring in 2012,
he volunteered his time to provide
technical support for the school's
music and drama performances.
Phil Renshaw, vice-principal at
East Leake Academy, has known
Mr Parry for 30 years and said:
“It was very sad news to hear about
Mr Parry. That was really a shock
for a lot of people.”
Mr Renshaw says that social
media played a part in bringing
together people who knew the
popular Mr Parry.
He said: “What's been really nice
is that through Facebook is that
former students have had nothing
but nice things to say about him
because he was a genuinely
nice guy.
“Students see the teacher but
colleagues see the other side. He
was a very cheerful man, a very
'can-do' man.”
Mr Parry was also involved in the
schools charitable events, setting
up a staff choir for Red Nose Day.
“We've got a new staff choir and
will carry it on in his name which
is important because we want to
remember Steve in a long-term
way,” Mr Renshaw said. Neil Hickling, a former student of
Mr Parry's, is now a professional
clarinettist, saxophonist and
teacher. He has performed at
venues all over Britain, including
the award-winning Surrey Opera,
and played at the Malta Victoria
International Arts Festival.
He cites his former teacher
as major influence on his life,
saying: “Music with Mr Parry
was the subject that really fired
my imagination and made me
certain, even from the age of 11,
that I wanted to be professionally
involved with it."
Mr Hickling believes Mr Parry's
primary focus was that his students
enjoyed music rather than trying to
produce a superstar musician.
He said:“It has always struck
me that Steve Parry was less
consumed with developing the
next Yehudi Menuhin (a renowned
Anthony Watts told The Local News
about the service, saying: "The
church congregation will formally
have the opportunity to say farewell
to David and Jane.
violinist) and was rather more
interested in cultivating a love of
music in all his students.”
A passion for music is something
that Mr Hickling wants to instil in
his own students, just as Mr Parry
did with him, but there is a tinge
of regret. Mr Hickling said: “I wish
I had the opportunity to tell him
what his lessons meant to me,
there have been a number of very
important teachers in my life, but
Mr Parry's influence sits at the root
of them all.”
Mr Parry's family say they have
been touched by the many
thoughtful comments and
wonderful stories people have
shared about him.
"Provided David is well enough, he
will preach at the service.
"David and Jane will be missed
greatly here in Bingham.
"We wish them every happiness in
their new home.
"We hope sincerely that David’s
recovery will continue.
"We are very thankful for the time of
David’s ministry in Bingham.
"The process of looking for a new
rector for the Parish Church, who
we trust will continue David’s good
work, has begun."

Museum and school partnership achieves awards success
Britt opens gym
The Framework Knitters Museum
in Ruddington has been awarded
the Working with Children and
Young People Award at the
Nottinghamshire Heritage Awards
2016 for their partnership with
Rushcliffe School. Nottingham Forest striker Britt
Assombalonga opened the new
Fitness Space gym in West
Bridgford. Assombalonga is set to
start the new season for the Reds
after returning from a long-term
injury at the end of last season.
Deputy chairman of the museum
trustees, Julian Ellis, told The Local
News: "This award recognises the
innovative thinking of our museum
manager, Paul Baker.
The gym has a vision of "creating
an environment where results are
inevitable". The model and service
the club offer separates The Fitness
Space from a traditional gym.
Assombalonga is pictured below at
the opening with Jake Benskin from
Jesse Gray School.
"It is also a tribute to the pupils and
staff at Rushcliffe School for their
work in developing this awardwinning partnership."
The unique partnership between
the museum and the school started
when the museum undertook a
£100,000 redevelopment in 2014.
Pupils were invited to work
alongside the professionals who
were responsible for designing
the exhibitions, creating new
educational resources including
a multi-award winning interactive
film, and for promoting the relaunch
of the museum.
Their feedback, ideas and input not
only directed the decision-making
processes for the professionals,
but the pupils were able to engage
creatively in the project by starring
in the film. This latest fantastic award success
joins an already-extensive list of
accolades, which the partnership,
and the resulting educational film
have achieved.
This includes an award at the
European Heritage in Motion
Awards, two at the East Midland
Heritage Awards, and attaining the
coveted Sandford Award. For further information on
the Framework Knitters
Museum, you can visit their
website online by logging onto
frameworkknittersmusuem.org.uk.

Kay's alfresco swim raises money for local museum
Kay Humphries has started a
month-long fundraising campaign
for the Framework Knitters Museum
by taking part in the Great North
Swim in Lake Windermere. The Ruddington branch of the
Nottingham Building Society
- known as The Nottingham showed their continued support for
a local junior football team.
Audrey Winkler, chairman of
the museum trustees and Kay’s
mother, told The Local News: “I’m
immensely proud of Kay.
They recently attended a football
tournament and cheered them all
the way to the semi-finals.
In their capacity as shirt sponsors
for Ruddington Colts U13s, the
society added extra razzmatazz to
the competition by providing face
painting and other fun activities in
The Nottingham gazebo.
"I'm also extremely thankful that
she chose to raise money for the
Framework Knitters Museum with
her swim.”
Kay swam the 5k race in a fantastic
time of one hour, 36 minutes and
44 seconds.
Branch senior customer adviser,
Rebekah Ward, told The Local
News: “We really enjoy getting
involved with the community here
in Ruddington.
This time placed her seventh out
of the women in the 50 to 54 year
old age group, and 267th out of the
total 585 competitors, male and
female, of all ages.
"We are very proud to sponsor
an up-and-coming team with so
much talent.
The museum, on Chapel Street
in Ruddington, is currently in the
middle of a massive fundraising
drive to raise a total of £750,000. This money will be used to
redevelop the site to include
an adjoining cottage they have
recently purchased.
It will also double the exhibition
space and will create a brand-new
visitor centre. They have already achieved over
£150,000 of their target and have
more fundraising events coming up
throughout the year.
Local building society
backs Ruddington Colts
“It was a great event and we look
forward to showing the Colts
our continued support for the
coming season.” Kay said: “I only started openwater swimming a year ago and
absolutely love it.
"The fact I was able to raise
money for such a great cause,
and support the museum my
mum puts so much time and
effort into, made this swim even
more rewarding. The Great North Swim takes place
over three days.
The event is Europe’s biggest
open-water swimming event, with
over 10,000 swimmers challenging
themselves by swimming a variety
of distances in the open water of
Lake Windermere.

Local company scores hat-trick
and wins prestigious award
Football club in Cotgrave on the
lookout for new players
Bingham-based La Jolie Ronde
Languages for Children have won
the 'What's On 4 Juniors' award
- as a best national activity for
children aged five to 12 - at the
International Children’s Awards for
the third year running.
Cotgrave FC, formerly Cotgrave
Colts, has been providing football
for children in and around the
village for the last 25 years. The
club’s aim is to offer football to any
child wanting to play, regardless
of ability or experience, with the
emphasis being on having fun and
development. Next season’s U8
team - school Year 3 as from this
coming September - are looking for
new players.
Marketing manager for La Jolie
Ronde, Mala Henry, said: "We are
absolutely thrilled to have won a
hat-trick of awards.
"It makes us so proud and it truly is
a great accolade, perhaps the most
prestigious for Children’s Activity
Providers. This category is always
a tough one as there are so many
fantastic and extremely popular
activities for children.
"Knowing that it's the parents and
children who have voted for us
makes it even more special. We
see this recognition as a great
achievement and reflects the
pride we take in our language

Paul Heard said: “This puts us in

“We have good links with
the local professional clubs.
Currently at this age group, we
have 11 Cotgrave players at the

School of the Year award for
Keyworth Primary and Nursery
Staff and children at Keyworth
Primary and Nursery are celebrating
after winning two national awards.
Rey Stephenson in Year 2 has won
an award in the children’s Reading
Recovery writing competition and
the school has won a School of
the Year award for its outstanding
contribution to children’s literacy
through Reading Recovery.
Rey travelled to London in June to
collect his award with Mrs Tyler, the
Reading Recovery teacher
The School of the Year award was
for the introduction of Story Sacks
in the school’s Foundation Unit.
These are bags containing a
book, soft toys, games and other
fun learning activities, based
around the book, in order to
encourage their youngest children
to enjoy books.
The children take them home to
enjoy with their family for 10 days
at a time.
The sacks were made by a small
but enthusiastic group of parents
and carers, who have worked
really hard to produce high-quality
bags, some of which have been
beautifully appliquéd, making them
very appealing to the children.
Most of the contents have come
from charity shops, or have been
donated after requests in school
newsletters and so the cost has
been minimal.

Vale First Responders earn award from The Queen
Bingham-based Vale First
Responders (VFR) have been
awarded the 2016 Queen’s Award
for Voluntary Service.
Pupils in Year 8 and 9 at
Toot Hill School in Bingham
have been collecting clothing and
toiletries on behalf of Refugee
Action Nottingham. This local
charity aims to support refugees
who are suffering across Europe
and is currently supporting Syrians
who have fled their country and are
now stranded in refugee camps.
This is the highest award given
to local volunteer groups and
recognises the outstanding
work they perform within
their communities.
The minister for the Civil Society,
Rob Wilson, said: “I would like
to congratulate all groups who
received this award in recognition
of their fantastic achievements.
“The huge amount of work and
commitment these organisations
put into their local communities
is surpassed only by the passion
and motivation of the individuals
who volunteer.”
In addition to receiving the
accolade, which was initiated by a
nomination from a local member of
the public, VFR was able to send
two members to a garden party at
Buckingham Palace, where they
met The Queen.
Toot Hill pupils

The year groups have been in
friendly competition with each other
to see who could collect the most
items. In total, 16 bags of clothes,
shoes, blankets and towels, along
with five boxes packed full of
toiletries, have been donated. VFR chairman, Rod Whitehead,
said: “We are overwhelmed by the
public support and are honoured
to receive the Queen’s Award in
recognition of our voluntary work
for our local communities.”
Since its inception in 2005, VFR
has supported the East Midland
Ambulance Service, providing
over 2,500 emergency responses
to villages throughout the Vale
of Belvoir.

the collection, said: “The most
important thing is that we have
been able to make a substantial
donation to a worthy cause.

Vale of Belvoir Rotary Club helping tidy Rushcliffe
The Vale of Belvoir Rotary Club set
aside its usual meeting and headed
to Cotgrave to hunt for litter on
Smiths Round Hill near Flaxendale.
The club had first consulted with
Streetwise, who provided a supply
of black bin bags and ‘pickeruppers’ - and they agreed to collect
the rubbish the following morning.
The group headed off with pick-up
sticks, gloves and sturdy shoes to
find any offending litter.
Denis Bacon said: “Delicately
we picked up empty crisp bags,
discarded drink cans, plastic
bottles, burst balls and an old
Christmas pudding, but soon the
pick-up sticks became redundant.
A couple of our group were seen
carrying an old fridge-freezer,
whilst others grappled with bicycle
wheels, inner tubes, car parts,
paddling pools, flooring panels and
dissected settees.
After a highly successful sold-out
joint-concert with Southwell Choral
Society, Bingham & District Choral
Society is now enjoying its annual
summer break. They have a lovely
programme of music lined up for
the autumn, including Pergolesi
(Magnificat), Mozart (Solemn
Vespers) and Vivaldi (Beatus Vir).
"The following day we held our
annual charity Cabaret Night at
The Grange, which really was a
fantastic event.
"Well over 100 people joined us
to be entertained by Emily Brown,
who was the finalist in Vale’s Got
Talent 2015; Tripliquette, a close
harmony trio from Nottingham and
Judith Hibbert, a comedienne and
tribute artist to Joyce Grenfell,
Julie Andrews, Gracie Field and
Victoria Wood.
“After 90 minutes we’d created two
large piles of rubbish. Returning to
our cars, Julie Stephens, the town
clerk for Cotgrave, thanked us for
our efforts.

The Flying High Trust hosts super Local school staff celebrate The
art event for nine primary schools Queen’s 90th birthday
The Queen’s official 90th birthday
was celebrated up and down the
country in colour and style with
parades and street parties.
Pupils and staff at the West
Bridgford School also joined in
with the celebrations and what a
momentous occasion it was.
Deputy head teacher, Mr Deans,
said: "During breaktime we
announced our Royal Bake-Off
Challenge winners. The standard of
entries was fantastic.
Schoolchildren from the Borough
of Rushcliffe made a special visit
to Bilsthorpe Flying High Academy
for an art event, with the help of
professional artist Sarah Palmer.
The children came from nine
different schools, which are all part
of The Flying High Trust, a primary
schools’ multi-academy trust
founded in Nottinghamshire and
based at Cotgrave.
Chris Wheatley, chief executive
officer at The Flying High Trust,
said: “The Trust Arts event has
been a huge success, bringing
together children from across our
nine schools who demonstrate a
real talent and passion for the arts.
"Our schools feel strongly that
we should provide opportunities
for all of our children beyond the
traditional curriculum to raise their
aspiration whatever the area in
which they excel."
Sarah Palmer said: “It is lovely
opportunity for the children to
get together and create part of a
large installation for their awards
ceremony. They have done an
amazing job. The work has been
quite technical, they have needed
patience and an understanding of
mathematics, as well as art and
they have made a good job of it.”
The Flying High Trust has member
primary academies all over Notts,
including Cotgrave Candleby Lane
(Cotgrave), Greythorn Primary
School (West Bridgford) and
Edwalton Primary School.
“First-prize winners, Lucy and Katie
Roadknight, designed a stunning
cake, themed on the Queen’s corgi
dogs – everything was in miniature.
"Many students and staff were
also keen to have their photograph
taken with The Queen. Well, as she
was a little busy we made do with a
cardboard cutout.
"We were pleased to welcome
our visitors from local primary
schools to join in our celebrations
at lunchtime. The themed lunch,
cooked up by our catering team,
went down a treat.
“The colours of the miniature cakes
even matched the brilliant Queenthemed decorations in the large
canteen, which included some
beautifully decorated letters written
by students to The Queen.
"The atmosphere was truly
celebratory as music from the
decades blared out from the
speakers, whilst students got
involved with arts and crafts,
donned royal masks, had a go at
the quiz about Queen Elizabeth
II, and simply soaked up the
fantastic atmosphere whilst eating
their lunch.
"Following lunch, Year 6 visitors
went on to challenge Year 8 in a
Royal Tug of War, beating them
hands down.
“Our sports leaders did an excellent
job encouraging participation and
supporting all who got involved.
"So, a huge well done and thank
you to all who got involved in
helping to make our celebration
such a huge success."

Local dance school pupils to perform with English Youth Ballet
Three dancers from the highly
respected Leonard School of
Dance are to perform with the
English Youth Ballet (EYB). Paige
Curzon, Emelia Oldershaw and
Anya Mistry are talented young
dancers and are currently in
rehearsals for a professional
production of Giselle
Amy Drew is one of EYB’s principal
dancers and previously danced
with Tasmanian Classical Ballet and
National Ballet of Ireland. She coaches the young dancers
in rehearsal and said: “The
young dancers are treated like
professional dancers during
rehearsals and will rehearse for just
10 days for the production. The romantic ballet will be
performed at the Theatre
Royal on 22nd and 23rd
July. The ballet will star
international principal
dancers Adele Robbins,
Amy Drew, Monica Tapiador,
Oliver Speers, Richard
Read, Brenden Bratulic and
Trevor Wood. Director, Janet Lewis MBE,
said: “We are especially
excited about returning to
Nottingham. We always find
extremely talented dancers
when we audition for young
cast members in Nottingham.” Paige said: “I started dancing when
I was three and it was just pure
chance as my mum
asked if I wanted
to join a dance
school and I have
just loved it ever since. I like all
the choreography at English Youth
Ballet and I am looking forward to
getting to know new people.
“I hope to be a
professional ballerina,
maybe at the Royal
Ballet Company.”
EYB held a big audition for the
ballet in April and nearly 300 young
hopeful dancers turned up to the
two auditions. “During those days,
EYB take over
three of the biggest
rooms in the school
and run rehearsals
simultaneously in each
room. At the end of
each rehearsal day,
the whole cast comes
together in the largest
space to share what has
been learnt that day.
The young dancers see
the two ballets in the
production taking shape
like a big jigsaw.” For tickets for the performance call

The 2016 Cotgrave Festival was a great success
By Russ Hamer
What a fabulous day the 18th June
was for Cotgrave. The rain stopped
and thousands of people turned up
for one of the best festivals around.
Rushcliffe Photographic Society
are running a community-based
competition, in conjunction with
St Luke’s Church, on the theme of
‘Beauty in the Ordinary’.
Traders, charities and
organisations, too many to list,
hawked their wares or offered
chances to win prizes.
The community is invited to take
picture throughout the summer to
illustrate everyday and ordinary
scenes from around the area. The
winning pictures will form part of an
exhibition at St Luke’s, which will
open on 8th October.
There were craft stalls of all kinds;
custom-made walking sticks,
jewellery, candyfloss and sweets.
At the Youth Zone, a huge inflatable
climbing wall, along with zorb balls,
sumo suits and speed football, kept
the kids enthralled free of charge.
Archery and laser guns gave all
ages opportunity to test their
hand-eye skills and the full-blown
dog show gave locals a chance to
display their pooches or just enjoy
the spectacle.
There were pony rides, a fire engine
to explore, a classic car display,
along with a cake making and
decorating display and competition.

RUSHCLIFFE JULY 2016 EDITION
In association with
The sun shone as thousands of
people poured into the beautiful
grounds of Wollaton Park last
weekend to visit this year’s
Nottingham Motor Show, which for
the first time, took place over two
days rather than one. Organised by
Crowdpullers Events, and with the
main sponsor being Central College
Nottingham’s Automotive Centre for
the second year running, this event
has become one of the largest on
the local calendar.
Saturday 4th June was ‘NEW CAR
PREVIEW DAY’ with the focus
being entirely on the latest models
that manufacturers had to offer.
This year, there was even more
choice for motorcycle enthusiasts
too with plenty of new bikes and
scooters on display available to
view, too. Various motoring-related
businesses also had trade stands
for people to visit to find out more
about the services provided.
These new cars and bikes were
displayed on the Sunday during
the Main Show when they were
at
Riverside Festival 6th-7th August
07
joined by stunning classics from
the past, the legendary Autokarna
its displays of vintage and veteran
vehicles, heritage buses and
tractors, classic cars, motorcycles,
commercial vehicles and classic
caravans.
A ‘Concours Parade’ featured quite
a number of these historic vehicles
in action, and the Autokarna itself
enabled visitors to relive and
experience the golden days of
classic caravanning. Showgoers
also had an opportunity to
rummage through all the treasures
and motoring memorabilia in the
auto-jumble sale, which always
very popular at this event.
The Nottingham Motor Show
always offers lot for children to
see and do, and this year was
no exception. With fairground
rides, face painting, street and
puppet theatre and live music, not
to mention the craft and charity
stalls and refreshments there was
something to suit all ages groups.
Grant Baker of Event organisers
Crowdpullers Events commented:
“The new car franchised dealers
were happy with being able to
showcase their latest models over
two days rather than one. We were
blessed with the weather and the
turnout for the new car preview day
exceeded all expectations.”
Grant continues: “Tom Garratt from
Vertu Motor Group commented on
how visitors on the Saturday were
genuinely interested in buying new
cars, and what better way is there
to compare all makes and models
in the beautiful setting of Wollaton
Park in nice sunny weather.
Thank you to all our sponsors,
particularly our main sponsor for
the past two years, Central College
Nottingham.”
Andy Miller from Crowdpullers
Events added: “Everyone is
delighted with the way the weekend
went. Feedback from all the
exhibitors was very positive and
they thought having the event over
two days was a big improvement.
Nottingham City Council agreed
that the show worked really well
over two days so plans are already
underway to stage the event over
2 days again in 2017 - only even
bigger and better than ever!”

Dapper Dogs: How to maintain a 'poodle-tastic' pet in your home
Some of you may have been
watching the TV programme 'How
to choose the right puppy'. This
is an interesting insight to the
different behaviours of breeds, but
they didn’t always paint the true
story about maintaining a dog. The
cockerpoo is a classic example.
The popularity of cross breed dogs
can be seen on every country park,
school gates and village corner.
The poodle cross is the most
common as poodles, as a rule,
do not malt and have a very
friendly temperament. This can be
appealing to busy households who
don’t want to be hoovering often.
The most popular cross poodle
breed is the cockerpoo - cute,
cuddly, extremely excitable and
love attention, but beware...
Cockerpoo’s need daily brushing
with a quality slicker brush and
comb right to the roots. Once
their adult coat comes through about eight to 12 months old and
can happen very quickly - they
will develop a thick cottonwool–
like undercoat at the roots. If
- Apply some discipline and training
with your dog. Cockerpoo’s are
intelligent but also excitable and
will take advantage if given half
a chance.
- Buy a quality slicker brush and
curry comb and use at least three
times a week.
- Groom your dog in a specific area
away from where they normally get
cuddles, eg not on the sofa.
not removed through combing,
this can matt very quickly. The
surface hair may appear knot free,
but the undercoat next to the skin
can be thick and matted and will
pull on the dog's skin and restrict
blood flow.
The only option for badly-matted
dogs is to have the coat shaved off
completely for the health and safety
of the dog. Whilst pain free, it’s not
a pleasant experience for the dog,
the owner or the groomer and for

- Introduce the puppy to a groomer
for puppy familiarisation sessions
after three months of age, so they
get used to the environment.
- Consider a cavapoo or cavichon
as they don’t malt, but tend to have
slightly silkier coats so don’t matt
as easily.
- Cockerpoos can be groomed/
clipped from four months if
required without adversely affecting
their coat.

The latest news is online @Nottslocalnews
New confidential school nurse texting service for young people
A new texting service to enhance
the way young people can access
health advice has being launched
by Nottinghamshire Healthcare’s
School Nursing Service. With more
children and young people using
hand-held mobile devices in their
daily lives, the ChatHealth text
service is an easy way for young
people to confidentially ask for
help about a range of issues, or
make an appointment with a school
nurse. They can also find out how
to access other local services,
including emotional support or
sexual health services.
In pilot areas across the country
such as Leicestershire, who are
already using ChatHealth, pupils
have said they like using the
messaging service because it is
less embarrassing, quick and easy,
anonymous and non-judgemental.
The texting service went live
at the start of July across all of
Nottinghamshire with the aim of
offering a relevant, accessible
method of contact and a flexible
way to provide support.
texts will be responded to by the
Nottinghamshire Healthcare’s
School Nursing Team within one
working day. The service will be
available Monday to Friday from
9am to 4:30pm, excluding bank
holidays. During out–of–hours,
anyone who texts will receive an
automated message with advice on
where to get help if their question is
urgent. The ChatHealth number is
07507 329952.
Peter Hunt, divisional general
manager for Children and
Young People Nottinghamshire
Healthcare, said: “I’m excited about
this. ChatHealth will allow young
people, who receive our services,
to contact school nurses more
easily and with the confidence
that they will be responded to
confidentially and quickly."

Young people aged 11 to 19 can
receive confidential advice on
a wide range of issues such as
bullying, emotional health and
wellbeing, sexual health as well
as illnesses. The service will
allow young people in the area to
send messages to a dedicated
number which will be delivered
to a secure website. Once there,
Helen Firth, Health Partnerships’
professional service lead for
Children and Young People,
Nottinghamshire Healthcare, said:
"Texting will give young people
privacy and control over how they
communicate and it will enable
us to support young people who
would not normally have the
confidence to ask for support."
The philosophy of the school
health service is all-inclusive and is
aimed at young people aged 0-19
regardless of whether they receive
mainstream education. For more
information please contact Helen
Firth by calling 01623 781822.

Motoring Advice: Teaching the correct technique, by Arnold Butler
When teaching someone how to
drive, it is very important to teach
them technique but it must be the
correct technique.
But then the car had no power and
was making horrible noises.
The reason this was happening was
that the learner driver was changing
gear by looking at the speedometer.
A short while ago I experienced
a young learner driver who had
been given several lessons by
an individual.
Once again, this is totally wrong.
One must listen to the sound of the
engine for changing gear.
What I mean by individual is a
relative or perhaps a friend.
When changing gear, one must be
able to adapt and go faster in the
gears when necessary, especially
on faster roads.
What was quite unfortunate for
the learner driver on this occasion
is that they did not know right
from wrong.
The gear change technique was a
complete shambles. Everything that
could be wrong was wrong.
The gear change was not relaxed
and too much speed was lost when
doing it.
Firstly, the learner driver would
push the clutch down.
They would then go to put their
hand on the gear lever, only to
find it was not in the position they
expected it to be in.
Whilst the driver was trying to find
the gear lever, speed was lost,
so then a hasty yank of the gear
lever pursued.
Had the learner driver put their
hand on the gear lever, then pushed
the clutch down, the situation
would not have arisen.
However, to rectify the problem, the
learner driver started to look down
for the gear lever.
This created another problem
because the learner was not
looking where they were going.
Actually, the learner was quite good
at changing from 1 to 2, 2 to 3,
and 3 to 4. All this was within the
30mph speed limit.
When we started to move off on
a hill, the learner was still going
through all the gears to get to
fourth gear.
Finally, when changing down, the
learner would go from one gear to
the next gear and then to the next
without bringing the clutch up.
Remember, a gear change consists
of clutch down, change gear,
clutch up.

independent driving instructor.

New services announced from
West Bridgford Shopmobility
You can create a good mood in
your home with EMC Tiles
West Bridgford Shopmobility is
pleased to announce that it is
expanding its range of services
to meet the changing needs of
its members.
It’s a recognised fact that design
can change how you feel and make
you feel much happier.
At EMC, we believe that your tile
choice should merge practicality
with style.
This is why happy days come
easily if you enjoy the space that
you live in.
We work very closely with leading
tile manufacturers and this means
we can bring you the latest trends
and fashions.
Since 2003, this local charity has
provided aids, such as scooters
and wheelchairs, to enable people
with mobility problems to move
around the shops and attractions of
central West Bridgford – all for an
annual fee of just £10.
However, as chairman of the
trustees, councillor Mrs Marie
Males, points out: “The market has
developed as mobility aids have
become more affordable. We need
to broaden our appeal to address
changing demands.”
So, what’s new? Well, with
Shopmobility’s short-term hire
scheme, it’s now possible to rent a
scooter or wheelchair to take away
with you. Here’s some examples of
how you can benefit:
UK holiday coming up? Why not
hire one of our new lightweight
scooters, which are collapsible and
can fit into the boot of a normal car,
so you can get around easily while
you’re away.
Granny/Grandad coming to stay?
If you have a visitor with mobility
problems, just call Shopmobility,
and they can hire a scooter or
wheelchair for as long as they
need it.
Been poorly, or just out of hospital?
A Shopmobility wheelchair or
scooter could speed your recovery
by getting you out and about.
Scooters are fully insured - there’s
another saving for you - and we
provide training before you take
it away.
Typical cost for the weekly hire of
one of our lightweight scooters is
just £30, plus a refundable deposit.
Don’t forget that you don’t need a
disabled card to become a member
of Shopmobility.
Why not drop into our office behind
West Bridgford Library and chat to
one of our volunteers? We’re open
Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays
from 10am to 2pm.
You can call us on 0115 981 5451,
check out our website online at
wbshopmobility.co.uk, or follow us
on Facebook.
At the locally-based EMC Tiles,
we believe you can create a good
mood through the use of ceramic
tiles in your home.
How about a bathroom that is
warm and vibrant to invigorate you
for the day ahead?
It also ensures you can find a
style to match your home and
application needs, as well as the
mood you wish to create.
Our showrooms are a gallery of
room set displays.
Or a tranquil conservatory that
serves as a peaceful haven to relax
in at the end of the day?
This allows you to see how tile
colours and textures work in a reallife setting.
The modern kitchen is often the
social hub of the home, with
guests and family members
congregating and spending much
more time there.
You can also take advantage of
what’s widely regarded as the best
tile-buying advice in the area.
It also presents a great design
opportunity, with a blank palette for
your imagination.
You can choose minimalist white,
warm earth tones or industrial tiles
for a unique look and feel. The
choice of look really is up to you
and the options are endless.
Help is available for calculating tile
quantities, arranging fixing and free
local delivery.
So, for happy days ahead,
visit EMC Tiles in Nottingham,
Loughborough or Leicester.
You can also go to the website
online for a preview by logging onto
emctiles.co.uk.

GARDENING
The latest news is online @Nottslocalnews
July Garden Notes - by John Draper of Greener Gardens
Summer at last and the weather
promises some of the warmest
days of the year.
Lawns and patios need to look
at their best as enjoying al-fresco
lunches and suppers become a
regular thing.
The biggest job of the month is to
see that all your plants are watered
regularly and the soil retains as
much moisture as possible.
Beds & Borders
Sweet peas will be producing new
flowers every day.
They can be cut regularly to fill
your home with delicious scents
of summer.
If you leave plants for a few days
to set seed, then they usually stop
producing new buds and flowers.
So, keep those scissors handy and
feed these plants over the foliage
and around the roots.
Make sure you dead-head flowers
such as old-fashioned pinks,
fuchsias and pansies to encourage
further flowering.
For monster heads of dahlias, pinch
out some of the buds to leave a
‘king’ flower that will draw energy
and grow really large.
Pinch out the top of the main shoot
of chrysanthemum and dahlia
plants so they grow bushy and
produce many more side shoots –
up to 10 per plant if you are lucky.
Watch for pests attacking new plant
growth and treat them as soon as
the first culprits are noticed.
Patio Tubs & Baskets
Watering and feeding container
plants growing on the patio is a
regular job.
Hanging baskets may need
watering daily.
Large pots and containers usually
hold enough compost so that they
only need some attention every
few days.

Dead-heading flowers will always
encourage maximum blooming.
This prevents the setting of seed
and a natural tendency of plants
to stop all further growth once
they have achieved their life’s
ambition of producing seed for the
next generation.
Feed baskets and patio pots each
week with an All-Purpose Plant
Food to encourage strong growth
with plenty of flowers.
Lawncare
Depending on rainfall or
supplementary watering, lawn
grasses should be growing fast
and healthily.
Mow the grass, but not too short,
at least once a week to keep this
core part of the garden looking
smooth and lush.
But at this time of year, regular
mowing will gradually exhaust
nutrient reserves.

Plant Food.
Runner beans are very susceptible

pest that sucks the sap of many
different plants.

You will probably notice them first
on the growing tips of the plants,
where stems and leaves are at their

most vulnerable for the gardener.
Left undisturbed they breed
fantastically fast and cause twisted

the colony.
They should be dispersed by
brushing the soil when dry or
drenching with water.
Apply when ant activity is visible
on top of the lawn, typically April
through to September.
Both methods will avoid smearing
them on the lawn when mowing.
Over time, left untreated, the lawn
may become uneven. Ants can
also damage roots which may
cause yellowing.
Apply to moist lawns and water
them in well.
Make sure the lawn does not dry
out for at least two weeks after
applying nematodes.
Did you know...
- An ant can lift 20 times its own
body weight.
- Some queen ants can live for
many years and have millions of
babies.
- Ants don’t have ears. Ants 'hear'
by feeling vibrations in the ground
through their feet.
- When foraging, ants leave a
pheromone trail so that they know
where they’ve been.
- Queen ants have wings, which
they shed when they start a new
nest.
- When the queen of the colony
dies, the colony can only survive a
few months.
- Queens are rarely replaced
and the workers are not able to
reproduce.
- Ants can be controlled by treating
with either biological nematodes or
chemical treatments.
We recommend the following
methods of ant control...
- Home Defence Ant Stop®
Granules, use as a drench on lawns
Application time: When first
noticed, a proactive approach
works best.
Home Defence Ant Stop® Granules
contain Spinosad, an active
ingredient derived from natural
soil bacterium.
The product is not designed to kill
ants instantly, so they take the Ant
Stop back to the nest and the entire
colony is destroyed.
This is available via the website
greenergardens.co.uk/shop.
- DIY Biological Control: Nemasys
No Ants
Application time: Typically April
through to September
Nematodes are available from
greenergardens.co.uk/shop and
posted to your home
What to do next?
Decide on which control or
deterrent method will be best for
you and get started on controlling
those ants.
Use pesticides safely. Always read
the label and product information
before use

Gardening company Prograss
welcome Rachael to the team
Things should be a lot more
organised administration-wise at
Prograss now that Rachael Grice,
wife of owner Tony, has joined
Prograss on a full-time basis.
Rachael (pictured right) previously
worked as a teaching assistant, so
this new job will be quite a change
for her.
Her new role as company secretary
will be to make sure everything runs
smoothly, with the emphasis on
customer service.
With Prograss expanding all the
time, Tony, who previously did
the administration, admits he
was struggling to cope with this
side and needed some help, so
the obvious answer was to take
Rachael on.
He told The Local News: "I am
delighted Rachael has joined
us. I am already seeing a huge
improvement in the efficiency of
the business.
"To have this side taken off me is a
huge relief. It has freed so much of
my time to concentrate on areas of
the business which I will admit were
being stretched.
"It is important to me that Prograss
continues to have its independent
identity and for that I needed to be
more available."
In times of need, Rachael has
already been called on to help in
other areas. As you can see from
the picture on the right, she is
lending a hand with the clearing up
after a big scarification job.
Prograss are your local,
independent and professional
lawncare company.
If you would like a free, noobligation lawn health check and
quote, call us on 01949 837367 or
visit us on prograss.com.
Prograss is a lawn care company
with a difference
Many factors will affect your lawn's
health and looks. Understanding
those reasons takes a lot of training
and work experience.
Your lawn will be assessed by a
trained agronomist with over 25
years' experience. The assessment
will be detailed to allow an
individual programme that will
maximise the potential of your
lawn. The results will be obvious.

Duncan Ross Gardens can help you with alfresco living this summer
Outdoor entertaining and alfresco
living are becoming a quintessential
part of our modern lifestyles, as
more of us experience outdoor
eating on our holidays and want to
be able to do it at home.
Letting the outdoors in and the
indoors out expands the space
available to us.
This way of living is now so
commonplace that it has been
given a descriptive name
'transterior'. We may not have the
hot summers that Spain or Greece
have, but we all appreciate getting
outside and the sun on our faces.
that is also practical. The same is
happening to the 'transterior'.
The missing weather ingredients
can be easily added using a host
of available items, such as fire pits,
infra-red heating, heated seats,
weather screens and so on.
Furniture that can be left out allyear round and is so easy to use
and also store has modernised
the market.
I remember when we started
installing hot tubs 20 years ago, so
many comments were made such
as "not in this country”.
Well, they are now commonplace.
Technology has created a fun
and useful piece of equipment
W.R.S
TREE SERVICES LTD
Materials are now available that
can make it seem you have your
actual indoor sofa outdoors. The
look is there.
If you want an outdoor kitchen,
outdoor cinema and sound system;
an office that can be reached
from the house in seconds that
is warm, safe and full of the
creature comforts of the actual
office without the drudgery of the
commute, it’s all available.
The key is to make the space you
have work to suit your lifestyle.
Duncan Ross Gardens have been
building the very best gardens
locally for over 25 years.

Selby Road Open Gardens reflects on another 'huge success'
It was another hugely successful
weekend for Selby Road and their
Open Gardens. During the course
of a fantastic weekend, more than
£3,582 was raised for this year’s
charity, the Albinism Fellowship,
supporting sufferers from albino
condition and their families.
Despite the slightly contrary
weather – a couple of short sharp
showers on Saturday afternoon
sent visitors seeking shelter
in the ever-popular tea tents –
the weekend attracted a large
number of people from all over
Nottinghamshire, and indeed from
further afield, including France
and Spain. There were more new
visitors than ever before, along
with the many who have become
enthusiastic regulars to what has
become, in its eighth year, an
established and much-loved event
in the calendar.
All the gardens were just about at
their best and looking magnificent
in the sporadic sun on Saturday
and an almost entirely sunny
Sunday - and the additional
31.05.16
attractions provided much
entertainment along the way. The
bee-keeper, who demonstrated her
craft with a hive, created a lot of
interest. The patchwork quilts, new
and original designs donated by
local quilters, were a huge success.
Equally, the brand new greetings
card stall and second-hand book
shop both were kept busy and,
along with the table sale, saw their
stocks depleting by the hour as
bargain-hunters snapped up some
very worthwhile mementos of the
brilliant day.
The ever-popular tombola sent
plenty of people away with a “prize
every time” and the Alamootie folk
singers and the West Bridgford
Social Singers provided the usual
first-class entertainment that Selby
Road gardens aficionados have
come to expect.
All in all, it was a great weekend.
Thank you to all who came along to
enjoy the gardens and to support
the charity - and we hope to see
you again next year.

Rushcliffe's Ellie is a rising
England football star
Local girl Ellie Brazil is one of
England’s most talented young
footballing stars and she's aiming
for the very top.
The teenager from Rushcliffe
is now an England Under-17
international and is set to represent
her country on the biggest stage
of all.
She signed for
Women’s Super
League 1 side
Birmingham City at
the age of 16 and
recently forced her
way into the firstteam squad, making
her debut against
Manchester City
back in April
home for Solihull after completing
her GCSEs at Rushcliffe School
last summer.
Ellie was part of the England
Under-17s' side which broke the
record for the most goals ever
scored at a UEFA finals event.
The record set is for any team at
all levels - men and
women - as England
beat Belarus 12-0 in a
remarkable game.
England went on to
lose a very tight game
against Germany in
an exciting semi-final.
Two years ago, she
came runner-up in
the Nottingham Post Junior Sports
Personality of the Year, but this
was mainly for her achievements
in athletics where she had won the
English Schools 800 metres.
Ellie then had a decision to make
between athletics and football
and opted for football, leaving her
England then played
in a play-off against
Norway and won, so
this resulted in them
qualifying in third
place for the U17s World Cup.
This will take place in September
and October - and will be played
in Jordan.
The three host cities are Amman,
Irbid, and Zarqa. Work is under way
in developing the infrastructure of
the stadiums in the host cities.
