Young Central College Nottingham inventors engineer their future
In their second year hosting the
Made In The Midlands Young
Inventors Panel, Central College
Nottingham are sending two of
their young engineers to the annual
MIM awards event in October.
Nineteen-year-olds Joseph Fitch
from Keyworth and Brightson
Xaviour Kalavilasam from Mansfield
were two of five students to take
part in this year's event, where they
presented individual projects to a
panel of manufacturing experts.
Both students delivered roboticthemed products and managed
to impress the judges with their
imagination and design, amongst
other skills, earning them a place at
the awards event. Each year, Made
In The Midlands holds a series of
panelled presentations across local
colleges in the Midlands.
EW
MWS Ltd has recently moved
into its own purpose-built factory
in Birstall, Leicester, where they
manufacture and service industrial
weighing scales. Andrew Clarke,
director of MWS and one of the
panellists at the Young Inventor,
said: "It was great meeting the
engineers of tomorrow, I'm sure
that they all have a bright future
ahead of them."
John Wright, Engineering Lecturer
at Central, said: "We are proud
of our students. Working with
professional organisations such as
MIM, who are keen to put talented
students and real managers
together to show that they really
have a bright future, is a great way
to introduce them to industry."
The other three students to
take part in the event were Jalil
Mohammed Zadeh, Bashir Elier
and Maxwell Leech, who presented
a mix of robotic and machining
projects to the judges. Last year's
Young Inventor award saw Central
College Nottingham claim top spot,
with their young engineer going on
“If you like our quality you’ll love our price”
A.J.PLASTERING
The aim is to encourage young
engineers to showcase their
abilities and get feedback from
local manufacturing directors.
The winner of each college is then
shortlisted for the Made In The
Midlands Young Inventor award.
That’s our promise!

to take an apprenticeship at R A
Labone, one of the panellists at the
time. Both panels presented a vast
pool of expertise from a range of
engineering backgrounds, providing
a rich source of feedback for the
students to absorb.
Charles Addison, director of Made
in the Midlands, who is overseeing
the judging process, said: "We were
pleased with this year's entrants
from Central. The judging process
is difficult due to the high quality of
the students. It's fascinating to see
the manufacturers apply real-world
logic and views to the presentations
which provides valuable insight to
the College and students alike."

Toot Hill wears red for Great Ormond Street Hospital
Toot Hill student Seamus Conroy
had a heart transplant back in 2007
at Great Ormond Street Hospital
in London.
He is now in Year 7 at Toot Hill
school and although he still
regularly visits the hospital, he is
doing well.
Seamus told The Local News he
is very grateful for the work Great
Ormond Street do, which has
led to him deciding to fundraise
for them.
“They’ve helped a lot so I want
to give something back to them,”
he said.
“I’m hoping the money we raise
will go towards equipment for the
hospital, so they can continue to
help other people like me.”
Year 7 students from tutor set 7.2
at Toot Hill School, along with
their head of year Ash Modi and
teachers Jane Baker and Toni
Harper, arranged for staff and
pupils to come dressed in red for
one day.

Everyone gave a donation of £1 to
be able to wear red.
The group also set up a cake sale,
with the help of Year 8 students,
to take place at break times and
lunch, with all proceeds going to
Great Ormond Street hospital.
Frankie, in Year 7, said: “We baked
and bought cakes to sell from
20p for the small ones to £1 for
the bigger ones, to help boost
fundraising on the day. The crowds
were huge and we sold out.”
Ella, Year 7, said: “It’s such a good
idea to help the hospital and I was
keen to get involved. Days like this
bring the whole Toot Hill community
together which is really nice.”
The total amount raised is still
being counted but is estimated at
over £1,500.

GB squad honour for Hannah
Radcliffe-on-Trent resident Hannah
Stevenson has been selected to
join the Great Britain Skeleton
team after two years of trialling
and training. She is looking to
follow in the footsteps of Amy
Williams and Lizzy Yarnold, who
won gold at the 2010 and 2014
Winter Olympics respectively.
Hannah was educated at the
South Nottinghamshire Academy
in Radcliffe and went on to study
a BSc and MSc in Sport Science
at Sheffield Hallam University. She
is previously a Nottinghamshire
County champ in the 200 metres
and applied for a UK Sport
talent ID campaign in 2014 with
British Skeleton.
She told The Local News: "I am
delighted to be selected to join the
GB Skeleton squad. This means I
will spending most of my summer
at training camps in Bath, which
is self-funded. These camps last
around one to two weeks each
month and I have to fund my own
travel and accommodation - and
also living costs of food, etc.
"This is going to be quite costly,
so it would also be great to see
if anyone in the local area would
be keen to fund or sponsor me.
This would be fantastic and ease
a lot of pressure of becoming a
full-time athlete without an income.
Sponsorship could eventually lead
to logos being put on my sled/
racesuit and helmet and also
placed on social media outlets."
To contact Hannah send an email
to hannahstevenson1993@hotmail.
co.uk. The next step then for
Hannah is between October this
year and March 2017, when she
will be training and competing in
Europe and the USA.
"It is such a great opportunity for
myself and the current overall aim
is to make and win a medal at the
Beijing 2022 Olympic Games,"
Hannah added.
Skeleton competitors travel head
first at a speed of around 80 to
90mph and they reach up to 5G’s
through the big corners.

Success for school in Plumtree
Midnight Marathon MoonWalk
Our Lady's Convent School
(OLCS) in Loughborough regularly
runs outreach activities with local
primary schools and this year
launched an exciting animation and
coding competition which recently
reached its nail-biting conclusion.
Sue, Kate, Sally and Lorna (pictured
below) set off to walk a marathon
through the night in London last
month, along with 15,000 others
from all over the country, as part of
the MoonWalk to raise awareness
and funds for breast cancer.
The challenge, designed to
support the teaching of computer
coding and promote British values
to students in Year 5, was to
create a short animation and the
winners of the competition were
from Plumtree.
The purpose was to educate other
Year 5 students about the meaning
of the term 'British values'. The
winners' trophy was presented to
Jonty and Harrison (pictured below)
from Plumtree School.
Jonty said: "I really enjoyed taking
part in the binary coding activity
and making the animation."
Harrison added: "I really loved
doing coding, I'm very grateful to
have been able to take part - thank
you to OLCS."
out to the staff and customers of
The Chestnut pub in Radcliffe, who
allowed us to hold a fundraiser
in the bar where we raised a
staggering £367.87 in two hours.
The four of them raised £1,000
pounds for this worthwhile cause,
thanks to very generous friends,
families and colleagues.
"The atmosphere at Clapham
Common for the start was amazing
and we met two more groups from
Radcliffe. There was a fantastic
range of wildly-decorated bras,
many with a carnival theme.
The quartet said: "We would like
to thank everyone who helped us
reach this total, with a special shout
" We are left with some wonderful
memories of taking part in a truly
special event."

Keyworth School of Theatre Dance having another successful year
Keyworth School of Theatre Dance
(KSTD) are having another very
busy year.
There is a performance for the
parents at the end.
They are a fantastic way to make
new friends, to learn new skills and
build confidence.
The second International Dance
Teachers Association (IDTA)
examination session this year, in
March, was another success, with
some excellent grades to report.
The workshops are for ages five to
16 and the age groups are split on
the workshop.
All pupils received either Merits or
Distinctions.
Congratulations also go to Erin
Hughes, Liliana Reader and
Georgia Waite, who were jointoverall winners of the KSTD
choreography competition this year.
Back at the beginning of May,
KSTD was inspired by Laura
Davenport from the Professional
Dance Experience.
The Professional Dance Experience
are a company in Leeds.
They came to Keyworth to lead
workshops, based on the ballets,
Nutcracker and Swan Lake.
KSTD are very proud of all their
pupils who auditioned for the
upcoming English Youth Ballet
production in Nottingham.
KSTD are looking forward to
hosting their next holiday musical
theatre workshops, led by a West
End professional.
Laura is originally from Nottingham
and has had the honour of dancing
all over the world with Birmingham
Royal Ballet.
They are delighted to report that
Honor Fry, Isabel Gradwell and
Charlotte Thomas were successful
in the auditions.
15th-17th August – Mamma Mia at
South Wolds Academy
The pupils all had a fantastic day
and are already asking when they
can do it again.
They will now be performing
in Giselle at the Theatre Royal,
Nottingham on 22nd and 23rd July.
27th October – Chitty Chitty
Bang Bang
KSTD pupils and their friends learn
songs, dance routines, acting
scenes and do crafts.
They will be performing at the
Keyworth Show, along with many
other performances from KSTD in
the main arena on Saturday 9th
July. Why not pop along and show
your support.

"What makes it

knowing that once again
it’s the parents and children, who

social empowerment programmes.
Education For The Children, in
Weekday Cross, run a school
in Jocotenango, north-eastern
Guatemala, called School of Hope.
The school helps Guatemala's
poorest children receive an
education, but the country is rife
with social problems.
According to the Ministry of Health
and Social Assistance, there were
135,808 pregnancies in girls aged
10-19 between 2009 and 2011. Ruddington’s Michelle Fischer is
a charity trustee. She said: “A big
issue is teenage pregnancy and
the abuse of girls, so we're doing a
programme called 'Being A Girl'.
“We work with girls so they develop
a sense of self-esteem and being
able to say 'no', so they feel more
in control of their own bodies.”
The school run workshops and
role-play scenarios to help them
combat abusive situations and gain
confidence. Ms Fischer believes
this is mirrored in other places
too. Education For The Children is
staffed, partly, by volunteers in the
UK and Guatemala, and has a child
sponsorship programme.
"Hundreds of thousands of children
learn French and Spanish each

in one of our after-school or

The winners will be announced at
the official awards ceremony at

Multi-million pound funding for Rushcliffe School planned expansion
Rushcliffe School has secured
£4million of government funding
for a proposed new performing
arts and language centre - and
could admit as many as 500 new
pupils. The brand-new building
would allow the school to ease
pressure on admissions in the
West Bridgford area.
important step towards ensuring
there are enough school places for
families in the area.”
To accommodate the rising number
of children in its catchment area,
the school has already increased
its planned admission number from
230 to 250.
Both last year and this year the
school actually offered more places
than the PAN to ensure catchment
families were not disappointed.
It would include three drama
studios, which could be opened
up to create a 270-square metre
space, accommodating an
audience of up to 300.
It would also house all the school’s
modern foreign languages and
music classrooms, as well as music
tuition rooms. In addition, the
facilities would be available as a
community resource.
The school is now seeking views
from parents, neighbours and other
schools in the area on increasing its
capacity from 1,480 to 1,980 pupils.
Rushcliffe currently has a planned
admission number (PAN) of 250
pupils into Year 7 each September.
The school has traditionally been
an eight-form entry school.
It seeks, over time, to increase this
to around 290, subject to securing
further funding to complete its
development plans.
Phil Crompton, CEO of the Trent
Academies Group, which oversees
Rushcliffe, told The Local News:
“Rushcliffe is a very popular and
highly successful school. It is
recognised by the Minister of
Schools as being among the top
100 in the country and by OFSTED
as 'Outstanding'.
"It’s also the lead school in the
Trent Academies Group and one
of only 26 ‘World Class’ status
schools in England. As a result, it’s
heavily oversubscribed.
“Demographic data shows the
school will need more capacity to
accommodate the number of pupils
due to come from its catchment
area in the coming years.
"Going ahead with this building and
increasing our PAN would be an

Two Wilford lawyers set up group West Bridgford School launch
for women in business
new mobile app
By Ryan Benjamin
The West Bridgford School have
launched a new mobile app in
response to the increased use of
mobile devices by parents. The app
provides parents easy access to
the latest school information and
can send out notifications, whilst on
the go. The school recognised that
a majority of its website hits were
coming from mobile devices. Two Nottingham lawyers have
started a group for women in
business which aims to take the
hard sell out of networking. Jayne
Harrison is a director at Cleggs
Solicitors in Wilford and set up
the group with her colleague
Emma Tegerdine. A 2014 study
by the Chambers Student Guide
revealed more than three-quarters
of surveyed law firms featured less
than 30% of women on their staff.
Ms Harrison (pictured) said:
"Women comprise just 24% of
the partnership at your average
commercial law firm in the UK.
However, in recent decades, female
solicitors have made up over 50%
of the new entrants."
After the success of another
networking group at her previous
firm, Ms Harrison decided to lead
another one. She added: "At my
last firm I set up a very similar
initiative to assist women to do
business with each other. This was
successful, hence why I decided to
set up a group in Nottingham.
"Some groups are not family
friendly and can start at 6:45am.
We decided to hold a meeting for
women that was family friendly and
run from 5pm until 6pm. We want it
to be informal and to take the hard
sell out networking."
The first meeting took place at
Cleggs Solicitors in Ruddington.
Here’s a great
way to make
more storage
space...
With 95% of parents owning a
smartphone and regularly using
apps, the school responded to
this trend by working closely
with an innovative local app
company called ‘TheAppOffice.
com’ to develop a West Bridgford
School app.
The app allows parents to access
the school calendar, key parental
information and news, report
absences and receive instant
notifications from the school in a
mobile-friendly format, as well as
a host of other features including
integration of other web-based
services that the school provides. Mr Deans, deputy head teacher
at the school, said: “Apps utilise
the native functions of any mobile
device, resulting in an engaging
and interactive experience. It’s
faster and allows parents to receive
last-minute notices.
“The school believes that apps
are the future for delivering school
communication in today’s mobile
world and will play a major part in
parental engagement. The app will
continue to evolve to keep pace
with mobile technology. It can be
downloaded for free from the Apple
Store or Google Play Store.”

Dacia powers to huge
success at 2016 Awards
DACIA has powered to huge
success in the latest Auto Express
Driver Power 2016 Awards, writes
Robert Maddox. The manufacturer of some of the
best value cars around was voted
the fourth best brand in the annual
honours with the capacious and
versatile Logan MCV estate topping
the Best Family Car category. The ‘shockingly affordable’ brand
recorded a score of 90.43 per cent
overall as the feedback of satisfied
owners helped the manufacturer
maintain a top five place in the
survey for a third consecutive year.
Altogether 32 brands were ranked
in the study.
The Romanian manufacturer’s
Sandero, Duster and Logan MCV
cars have won legions of fans
through being the lowest-priced
in their sectors by far. In the case
of the Logan MCV that I’ve been
driving there’s no other car on the
market which offers more space for
your money than this roomy estate
because you can drive away a new
example of the model for under
£7,000. Together with the Duster, priced
from £9,495, and the Sandero,
starting at £5,995, it’s available
through Bristol Street Motors new
Renault dealership at Haydn Road
in Sherwood. These are not only cars which are
a good deal cheaper than their
main competition but you also
get a great deal when it comes
to equipment when buying a top
version. The ultimate Laureate example of
the Logan MCV (its initials stand
for Maximum Capacity Vehicle)
has air conditioning, cruise control
and powered windows all round
as well as a raft of safety features.
Yet, surprise, surprise, an 898cc
Laureate Logan can be yours for
under £10,000. Renault CLIO

they’re folded, and owners enjoy
a wide and flat load deck. This is
almost 42inches (105cm) long by
53inches (134cm) at its widest point
when the seats are in place, so
ample room for carrying small items
of furniture or lots of luggage.
Ok, the Logan MCV is not the
most sophisticated vehicle on
the market. You don’t get softfeel dashboard trim in this car, its
seats are very much old-school
and its styling is far removed from
the lifestyle estates that are so
popular but, eh, if you are looking
for a good honest workhorse it’s a
vehicle with a lot to offer.
This is a car designed to offer
maximum space for minimum
outlay and it’s one of the most
practical family estates around as
it lives up to its description as a
Maximum Capacity Vehicle with a
boot that goes beyond shaming
its supermini sector classmates by
offering the carrying capacity of a
much larger Volvo V70.
Carrying capacity is 573 litres with
Fold the seats and you get a deck
that’s 63ins (160cm) long. Then
push the front passenger seat
forward and you can carry items
more than two foot in length. All
versions have a 60/40 split folding
rear bench. A reasonably low sill
makes for easy loading.
Great news for keen cyclists or
campers is that every model comes
with longitudinal roof bars and these are finished in satin
chrome in the case of the Laureate
version tested.
Like the Sandero supermini,
the Logan is made all the more
attractive thanks to Dacia having
collared some of the best engines
and technology the Renault group
has to offer.
The MCV’s power plants include
Powered by people with pride
the 898cc TCe 90 turbocharged
three-cylinder petrol engine that’s
also found in the new Renault Clio
but without the added expense of
Stop&Start technology. It’s also
offered with Renault’s tried-andtested 1.2-lire petrol burner and the
top-selling 1.5 diesel, in 90hp form.
The 1.5-litre diesel powered the
Logan MCV I drove and proved
extremely frugal by returning more
than 54mpg in general running. Up
to 74.3mpg has been achieved on
the combined cycle during official
testing. C02 emissions of just 99 g/
km mean exemption from road tax and reduced bills for company
car drivers.
This engine is reasonably quiet and
delivers good mid-range pulling
power, which is good news when
using the MCV’s load capacity to
the full. Reduced gear-changing is
another benefit.
I found the MCV to be an
exceedingly practical and most
likeable car. It’s every inch a

to its huge boot. It also offers

space for such a reasonable outlay.
Drivers not put off by its functional

its budget pricing by the way it
drives. Supple suspension does a
good job in soaking up the bumps
and the car feels stable at speed. The range includes Access and

04 NK MOTORS: BUYERS GUIDE
Go for the T-GDI variant and you
get the option of the brand’s latest
seven-speed DCT dual-clutch
automatic gearbox.
The new KIA Sportage
THE quality of Kia’s offerings
help NK Motors consistently soar
to success – cars like the latest
Sportage.
It’s easy to believe for a moment
that the market for compact SUVs
hasn’t changed all that much in
the last ten years, but it’s now
radically different – and the biggest
beneficiary of these changes have
been Kia, more specifically its
Sportage.
Ten years ago, you could pick
up a new entry-level Land Rover
Freelander for under £16,000.
Nowadays the Freelander’s
Discovery Sport replacement would
set you back £30,000-plus.
What it all means is that a huge
number of buyers are being priced
out of the SUV market. That’s
something Kia not only recognised
but also put itself in prime position
to capitalise on with its impressive
fourth-generation Sportage.
It now gets a smarter look inside
and out, greater practicality and a
range of technologies to improve
comfort, convenience, connectivity
and safety. If you’re buying a small
SUV or a Qashqai- like crossover,
it’s worth a look.
Most Sportage buyers, though,
want a diesel. The range starts
with a 115PS 1.7-litre CRDi variant.
Above that, there’s a 2.0-litre CRDi
option, offered with a choice of
136PS or 184PS power outputs.
Whatever engine you decide upon,
you should find that refinement
levels have been much improved
over the third-generation model.
The front end of this latest
Sportage is the biggest change
over the outgoing model, thanks
to smarter headlamps that sit just
above a bolder, lower, wider version
of Kia’s hallmark tiger-nose grille.
These lights are now positioned
higher, sweeping back along the outer edges of the sharplydetailed bonnet.
The result is a more imposing
appearance and a more stablelooking stance, despite this model
retaining the same 1,855mm width
as its predecessor.
It’s 40mm longer, though, and more
aerodynamic.
Inside, there’s a completely
new interior, with higher-quality
materials and a central console that
cascades downwards and is tilted
10 degrees towards the driver.
The 30mm increase in this model’s
wheelbase means that the cabin
is more spacious, with greater
headroom front and rear.
At the back, the seats recline
further than before for greater
long-distance comfort. Out back,
bootspace is up from the previous
model’s 465-litre total to 503 litres.

Honda returns to the compact SUV market with the new HR-V
HONDA has retuned to the
compact SUV sector in style with
a new HR-V that’s one of the
best-looking compact SUVs on the
market.
Here is an all-new crossover car
blending coupe-like styling with the
tough, solid stance of a robust SUV
and it’s dramatically different to
the original HR-V, on sale in the UK
from 1999 to 2005.
The heat is certainly on Renault,
Nissan and Vauxhall who have
driven into the supermini SUV
sector since the demise of the firstgeneration HR-V because the new
Honda doesn’t simply represent
very stylish transport but also offers
class-leading boot space.
What’s more, it shares Honda’s
highly practical Magic Seats
system with the Jazz supermini so
owners enjoy numerous loading
configurations.
Carrying capacity is 453 litres with
the rear seats up and 1,026 litres
when they’re folded.
Take your pick from S, SE, SE
Nav and EX versions priced
from £18,495 and available in
Nottingham through Vertu Honda
at Lenton Lane. They are powered
by either an all-new 130 PS 1.5
litre i-VTEC petrol engine or a 120
PS 1.6 litre i-DTEC diesel. CO2
emissions are as low as 104 g/
km. For drivers seeking an easier
life at the wheel there are CVT,
petrol-engined cars with a newly
developed automatic transmission
using software which simulates
seven speeds and provides
optimised gear change mapping.
Climate control, cruise control and
dusk-sensing automatic headlamps
are fitted as standard even on
S-grade cars while extra features
of SE versions include rain-sensing
wipers, front and rear parking
sensors and a six-speaker audio
upgrade.
Top-grade EX examples further
have a full leather interior, smart
entry and start, and a rearview camera. They are also
distinguished by a unique-in-class,
tilt-and-slide opening panoramic
glass sunroof, plus 17-inch alloy
wheels.
The Honda Connect in-car
infotainment system of SE and EX
cars is an Android-based system
featuring an app-based ‘pinch,
swipe and tap‘ interface accessed
on a seven-inch touchscreen in
the centre of the dashboard. Preinstalled apps give rapid access
to internet-based services such
as web browsing, real-time traffic
information, news and weather,
social media, and internet music
stations.
A maximum, five-star Euro NCAP
safety rating has followed Honda’s
decision to equip every new HR-V
sold in Europe with the brand’s
City-Brake Active System. SE and
EX models also have Honda’s
Advanced Driver Assist System,
which uses radar sensors, plus
forward- and rear-facing cameras
in giving owners a comprehensive
suite of active safety technologies
including forward collision
warning, traffic sign recognition,
an intelligent speed limiter, a lane
departure warning system, an a
high-beam support system.
The new HR-V.
Just right in every way.
It’s sporty on the outside, and spacious on the inside. It’s
clever, and yet still incredibly practical. For instance, it’s got
the largest boot in its class, and it lets you stream whatever
you like to the Honda CONNECT screen, even films.

More great medal success for
Nottingham Rowing Club
Ten wins at Shrewsbury Regatta
for Nottingham Rowing Club
The BUCS (British Universities &
Colleges Sports) Rowing Regatta
took place in Nottingham recently.
Shrewsbury Regatta is a traditional
side-by-side, winner-takes-all river
race. Nottingham Rowing Club
competed over a 1,000m upstream
course on the River Severn on
Saturday 7th May and won a
fantastic haul of five trophies.
The event was held at the
National Watersports Centre at
Holme Pierrepont.
There were over 2,000 students and
they represented 73 universities in
1,166 boats.
Conditions were quite difficult and
wind caused the programme to
be altered and some races had to
be cancelled.
Athletes from Nottingham Rowing
Club - in Loughborough University
colours - won one gold and two
bronze medals at the regatta.
Nottingham Rowing Club coaches
Dez Atkins, Nikki Spencer and
Martin Kay were on hand, feeding
in tactical advice for racing in the
rough water.
Katie Bartlett and Caitlin Boyland
won gold in the Women's
Championship Double Sculls,
beating both Manchester and
London Universities.
Caitlin had earlier won a
bronze medal in the Women's
Championship single sculls, behind
On a 600m stretch on the Sunday,
they won another five and returned
to Trentside with 10 victories.
St Mary's and Oxford.
Dez Atkins told The Local News:
"All the Nottingham Rowing Club
members sculled well over the
weekend and we are proud of them.
"They are well set for the upcoming
racing season."
The Men's Championship
Quadruple Scull of Alex Evangelidis,
Max Hearndon, Josh Tolley and Alex
Watkins took the bronze behind
Regatta Victor Ludorum winners
Newcastle University and Durham.
Martin Kay said: "They came from
fifth with a hard-fought burn in the
last 250 metres to squeeze the
bronze, having stuck to the agreed
race plan."

What’s stopping you from being
the person you want to be?
We can change the way we think
and communicate, with ourselves
and with others.
We can de-traumatise past
events, change limiting beliefs that
keep us from doing the things that
we want.
There are reasons for all our
behaviours and these can be both
good and bad.
We can access our subconscious
mind and discover the root cause
for many of our problems.
Then we can change our
behaviours and responses in
those situations where we want
change to occur and take control
of our lives.
Don’t just let life happen. You
need to make it be the way you
want it to be.
Unfortunately we can’t change
other people but we can change
ourselves and move forward
towards the future we really want.
Ever heard the phrase “life is not a
destination, it’s a journey?”
Enjoy the ride!

Motoring advice and tips – traffic congestion and how to drive in it
By Arnold Butler
drivers entering or leaving the
other road, especially if it is an
emergency vehicle.
During my daily work I travel
several miles and encounter
severe and sometimes light
traffic congestion.
Road positioning is very important.
Make sure when turning right into a
road, if the road you are on is wide
enough, make sure you position
yourself so that you are just left of
the centre of the road or just to the
side of the white line.
Sometimes the congestion is
inevitable and other times it can be
caused by fellow motorists.
There are many examples which
can exasperate, frustrate or
even anger a driver when
congestion occurs.
However, a driver must learn to
accept these conditions and make
sure they are not contributing to
the situation.
I can remember a situation when
with a pupil. It must have been
about 5:30pm in the evening.
We joined a dual carriageway by a
slip road.
There was a vehicle behind us, with
two bikes on the roof rack, - not
important, just for recognition - also
joining the dual carriageway.
This will enable other drivers
to pass you on the left. When
approaching a left turn or a
roundabout make sure you indicate.
The two lanes were stop start. As
soon as the driver with the bikes
realised the right lane was going
just a little faster, he changed lanes.
But then we caught him up and
passed him, he then moved back to
the left, then back to the right.
All the time he was doing this he
was causing other drivers to brake
every time he moved into a gap in
the other lane.
By now he was about 100 yards
ahead of us, in the right lane.
By the time we had reached a
roundabout a couple of miles
further along, we pulled up at the
side of him. I ask was it worth it?
Other examples that contribute
to congestion, always assume
when you come to a junction or a
crossroads, there is a box junction.
Wait till you can get past it before
progressing, so as not to stop
across the junction and stop other
This will help any drivers waiting
to emerge to assess if it is safe
to go, otherwise they could be
waiting unnecessarily.
Remember be considerate, patient
and if you know there is going to
be congestion allow more time for
your journey.

The latest news is online @Nottslocalnews
Local property power team has ‘rising ambition’ for West Bridgford
West Bridgford will be home to a
residential development of 49 plush
apartments, after a property power
team from Nottingham invested in a
piece of land just south of the city.
Property entrepreneur Arran
Bailey, Rob Cassidy of New
Century Windows and Nigel
Rhodes of DL Rhodes & Son
have invested in the piece of land
at Bridgford Point, after the team
worked together on a similar
development at West Bridgford’s
award-winning Christonian
Court development.
The Christonian Court development
will act as a prototype for this
subsequent development, after
builders DL Rhodes & Son landed
a prestigious gong for it at the 2015
LABC Awards.
Arran Bailey, director at ALB
Investments Ltd, said: “I have had
my eye on the piece of available
land behind the City Ground for
some time now and it seemed
like a natural progression to offer
the opportunity to DL Rhodes &
Son, the builders who worked on
Christonian Court, and to New
Century Windows who also worked
on the project.”
The trio have now gone in for
planning permission to create 49
one and two-bedroom apartments
all designed to a high specification,
and the development will be
headed up by Simon Birch at CBP
Architects, after his great work at
Christonian Court.
Arran continued: “West Bridgford is
such a strong rental area and
we had people literally biting our
hands off for the last batch that we
developed there. We are unsure if
we will provide the development for
sale or let as it stands, but we are
open to both sets of enquiries."
Nigel Rhodes, director at DL
Rhodes, said: “When I received
the call from Arran I had no
hesitation on investing into this
project. We are hoping to build a
similar scheme that won the award
around the corner, which will further
enhance West Bridgford”
Rob Cassidy, managing director
at New Century Windows, said:
“When Arran invited us to be a
part of the investment team for
this project in West Bridgford, we
were absolutely delighted as it is a
fantastic opportunity.
“We have worked with Arran and
ALB Investments on several projects
in the past, installing windows and
doors, and he was impressed with
how we presented ourselves as well
as our excellent work. We now have
the chance to work on a project
from the ground up and we are very excited for work to begin.”

Does your child struggle with English or Maths?
Nottingham Emmanuel School students
talk politics with Lilian Greenwood MP
Is it a battle trying to get your child
to do their homework? If so, they
probably also lack confidence in
their own abilities.
The Nottingham Emmanuel School
in West Bridgford received a visit
from Lilian Greenwood MP, who
took a tour of the school and talked
at length with Sixth Form students
about the current political climate
and topics close to their hearts
Crucial to improving their learning
is getting them to believe in
themselves and realise that they
can reach their goals. Raising
children’s confidence is an essential
part of the learning process and the
first step in helping them to reach
their full potential.
Sometimes children won’t have the
confidence to ask their teachers
to explain things to them again.
They worry about how the rest of
the class may perceive them. This
is where private tuition can really
make a difference and transform
the child’s learning. Inspirational
teacher Stephen Solbé set up
Orchard Tutoring in 2012 to help
children achieve their full potential.
Sarah said: “My daughter used
to worry about Maths but since
moving up a group at school she
now says it’s her favourite subject.
Thank you so much.”
Contact Stephen on 01949 878103
or visit orchardtutoring.co.uk.
Lilian Greenwood MP, who
serves as the Labour Member of
Parliament for Nottingham South,
said: “It was really good to come
along and chat to the Sixth Form
about issues that they’re interested
in. They had some really good
questions. There was such a broad
range of things they asked about."
The students asked questions
about many topics, ranging from
the impact of the EU on fisheries
and on a personal note, what
Lilian would do if she ever became
Prime Minister.
“They were really engaged and
it was fantastic for me to be able
to talk to young people in the
constituency about the things that
matter to them," she continued.
Martin Skinner, Nottingham
Emmanuel teacher of Religious
Studies & Sixth Form Service
and Leadership Development,
said that the students were a
credit to the school, showing
passion and commitment to being
well informed.
“It was a great pleasure to see
the group of Sixth Form students
interviewing Lillian Greenwood
MP," he said. "They showed a great
level of knowledge and insight into
the political landscape and had a
meaningful and in-depth meeting
in which they discussed a range of
issues from Europe to opportunities
for young people.”

GARDENING

The latest news is online nottinghamlocalnews.com
It’s not too late to have a fantastic Prograss lawn this summer
As spring changes into summer
it may come as a surprise that it
is not too late for Nottingham’s
premier, local, independent lawn
company Prograss to come and
make a real difference to your lawn.
An instant improvement can be
seen after just one treatment and
with each subsequent treatment we
can improve it with every visit.
How we do this is quite simple. The
first treatment requirements will be
to start dealing with what we don’t
want in the lawn, which will be
weeds, thatch and moss. We would
then work on what we do want,
which is the existing healthy grass
and the aim is to green, strengthen
and thicken it, so it starts to outcompete the weeds and moss,
rather than the other way round.
The commercial products that
Prograss use are among the
highest quality available and are
child and pet-friendly. If mechanical
work (hollow tine aeration and
scarification) is required, this can be
delayed until the autumn, so as to
not disrupt the lawns appearance
too much while you are using it for
most in the summer. Hollow tine
aeration is done using a machine
which extract thousands of plugs
out of the lawn. The grass roots
then go down for the food, water
and nutrients and like any plant a
plant with a strong root is usually a
healthy plant.

Scarification is done using a
machine which has a powerful
motorised rake and its aim is again
to take out what we don’t want in
the lawn, moss and thatch, and
leave in what we do want which
is the healthy grass. Scrarifying
properly is a highly skilled job as
the blades have to be set at the
right height.

GARDENING
Great local photography on our Instagram @Nottslocalnews
June Gardening Notes - by John Draper of Greener Gardens
Sun to warm the soil and long days
stretching almost to bedtime are
a delight to gardeners who never
have enough time to keep all their
plants watered, fed and cared for.
If the weather pundits are right we
are due for a scorching summer,
so it’s time to prepare the garden
with water-holding granules and
surface mulches that look both
attractive and reduce evaporation
from soil surfaces.
Beds and Borders
Complete the planting of tender
bedding plants and tropical exotics
that will beautify your garden this
summer. If your soil is stony or
sandy, the roots of these plants will
need to be able to draw moisture
and nutrients from the soil.
Watch all your flowering plants
for the first signs of summer
pests. Sweet peas and roses
will usually be first to show
greenfly infestations and French
marigolds will harbour the first of
the caterpillars.
Tall plants, such as delphiniums,
dahlias and rudbeckia, will only
stay upright with the help of a stake
placed firmly beside each plant and
for the plant stems to be tied to
these supports.
Patio Tubs & Baskets
Now that the risk of frost is over,
it’s time to complete the planting
of patio containers, tubs and
hanging baskets with tender plants
such as fuchsia, geraniums, regal
pelargoniums and busy lizzies.
Don’t forget that the hard edges
of containers are best softened
with trailing plants, such as purple
verbena, blue lobelia, yellow bidens
or white bacopa. Foliage plants
mixed with the flowering ones will
add a contrast of leaf shape and
texture. The silver-leafed Cineraria
maritima is a popular upright foliage
plant that adds some contrast to
bright flowers and so will trailing
ivies and silver Dichondra Silver
Falls. Flowers aren’t always
essential for interesting patio
planters. Hostas, begonia rex and
coleus will provide colour and
texture throughout the summer.
Check your chosen container has
drainage holes and cover these
with some stones or broken crocks
to ensure there is good drainage.
If slugs are a menace in your
garden, keep them under control in
beds and borders with Slug Pellets
or Nemasys Nematodes.

While the lawn expert will be
mowing his grass twice a week to
keep a perfect lawn in trim, the rest
of us will probably find that cutting
once a week will have to do.
If you have some extra time in
the twilight to whip over the grass
more frequently, do try. It takes a
lot less time because there are less
cuttings to dispose of and it will
be beneficial to encouraging a
thicker lawn.
Even better for thickening the grass
up in summer is to feed the lawn.
If you spot some weeds marring
the beauty of your rich green grass,
give them a shot with a selective
lawn weed killer will control all
manner of broad-leaved weeds
without damaging the grass.
Don’t scalp the grass when
mowing. If you cut it regularly
to around 2.5 cm (1”), it will
look greener, feel softer and
eventually grow thicker than the
lawn that is cut short to 1cm at
irregular intervals.

All you need are some big pillowshaped bags of enriched compost
in which to grow the plants, some
tomato food to ensure the resulting
fruits are big, juicy and full of
flavour and someone to remember
to water the bags regularly.
Herbs planted together in a large
pot are very handy when placed
near the kitchen door and can be
decorative too. Purple splashed
sage, variegated thyme, chives,
basil and marjoram are all suitable
pot-mates to cram in together.
When it comes to the more
rampant applemint, peppermint
and the common spearmint,
keep the roots restricted in a pot,
preferably sunk up to its rim in the
border, otherwise its roots will run
through the garden like a weed.
Strawberries should start to fruit
later in the month and deserve
a good feed now to encourage
maximum production and a good
flavour.

Summer is nearly here - see what Duncan Ross can do to help you
Summer is very nearly here and this
year has seen a massive increase in
interest in 'outdoor living'
The key is not to penny pinch on
detail. Good looking jobs stand out
for a reason and that is often good
design and attention to detail.
I think that this is the most
appropriate description, as it’s not
just landscaping your garden.
We have been building high-quality
gardens locally for 26 years.
It can involve so many more
components, such as furniture
and technology.
Probably the single biggest style
being requested is a contemporary,
clean look.
This involves built-in planters
and benches that create a lowmaintenance environment.
This look is often requested as a
match to improvements that have
already been done to the house,
thus complimenting each other.
It is a highly functional look that
suits most modern suburban
houses, allowing an easy mix of
entertainment and play areas.
This type of design requires
significant construction skills,
usually beyond good DIY skills.
Our work can be viewed on
our website by logging onto
duncanrossgardens.co.uk.
It is often requested by busy
professionals that do not have the
time to do the work anyway.
To obtain an impressive look, many
people invest considerable sums
of money, particularly on kitchen/
living areas.
These areas will repay the
investment with improved social
interaction between family and a
better lifestyle.
The same can be said for
investment in the garden.
Spending on quality features,
such as a well-lit and paved
entertainment area, with some
All quality looks do come with a
price attached.
If you are the type that spends
thousands on a kitchen to get “the
look”, do not expect to achieve
your dream outdoor room for a few
hundred pounds.
Landscaping products, unlike many
building products, are finishing off
products, so come with a premium.
Knowing your way around what is
available and what could do the job
for you without spending any more
than you need takes experience.

Cotgrave golf pro Daniel Parkes wins prestigious England Golf award
Golf professional Daniel Parkes has
won a top England Golf award for
his successful work to grow the
grass roots game.
introducing the newly designed
short game area to allow for more
dedicated and focussed coaching.
Bill Mackenzie, The
Nottinghamshire’s managing
director, said: “Recruiting Daniel
was probably the best thing we
have ever done to get the club
recognised as a fantastic place to
come and get into golf and learn.”
Daniel is the academy director
at The Nottinghamshire Golf and
Country Club in Cotgtrave, where
he has developed the popular
‘Pathway to Golf’ scheme, which
fills eight junior classes and 10
adult classes each week.
Matthew Bloor, the England Golf
County Development Officer for
Nottinghamshire, added: “Daniel
is really proactive in going into
schools and engaging with people
who have never tried golf before,
getting them up to the club and
involved in regular coaching.”
The Try, Learn and Play programme
was launched in April 2015 and
has already created 26 new
club members.
Daniel was presented with the
Talent Pathway award at a gala
dinner at England Golf’s annual
conference, which celebrated the
golfers and golf clubs who make
the game great and inspire others
to play.
He said: “I am humbled to receive
the award which recognises a team
effort from The Nottinghamshire
and our partnerships.
“The pathway only works when
each client feels welcomed to the
course by members and staff, has
fantastic catering to encourage
them to stay and has a great
course to play and facilities to

"I am unbelievably happy
with this achievement for The
Nottinghamshire and as we
always say, team work makes the
dream work.”
As well as developing the Pathway

close links with the local school
community and he is also involved
