We would like to begin by saying how proud we were of the Young
We would like to begin by saying how proud we were of the Young People who
paraded across the District for Remembrance Sunday. We were able to join
Scout Group and Brocks Explorer Scout Unit in the morning and
Scout Group
in the afternoon. All of our young members were smartly turned out and took part in
the services with reverence. A couple of weeks later a member of the British Legion
handed us a letter from one of the local newspapers complaining about the small turn
out of Young People on Remembrance Sunday. The British Legion member said “He
should have come to Maulden”, in fact he could have come to any of the towns and
villages in our District and seen a very different sight.
It seems amazing to us that our first full year as DC and DDC has come to an end. We
hope you have enjoyed your Scouting year as much as we have. It really is a privilege
to be involved in this District which if full of dedicated leaders all working hard for our
Young Members. You should all be very proud of all that you do.
We have had some fantastic fun evenings visiting sections, camps and District events.
The laughter and fun we have appears proves that you are getting it right. However
good the District is there is still more we can do. Not least the need to offer Scouting
to more young people. To do this there has to be some kind of plan for the future as
we work with you to develop and grow the District. After
the very successful Flying Higher conference we have
been able to put together a development plan for the
District. This has been agreed by the District Executive
and by the District team. We hope to add to this during
2012 as we add in new items based on the Group
development plans. Even without a development
plan the District is already growing and looks
set to grow even more next year.
We look forward to working with you in
2012. If it your custom to celebrate
Christmas then may we wish you a merry
one and a Happy New Year.
Welcome to the first Gilwell Park

Cubs had a fun time in St Mary’s
Church, Maulden to complete their My Faith
Badge where they saw Dibley wearing his other
uniform. Also Jo joined both Cub Packs after
their day trip to London, where after presenting
Craig with his wood badge, Jo helped to serve
up their dinner.

In the evening after a hearty meal we were
treated by one of the Dads who is a baker. Watching the cubs trying to eat the iced
ring donuts which we hung up on a piece of string was very amusing and very messy.
However the sugar rush helped give them the energy spies need to diffuse bombs,
decipher codes and shoot missiles (balloons) on the bases we set up.
On Sunday, after a bit of free time to explore the camp site and make dens, we went
to Linton zoo and had a great afternoon before bringing back 16 very tired cubs.
At

good to witness how flexible
scouting can work, as jobs on
the exec committee were

Nightjar News is YOUR district newsletter, and I
want to hear from YOU. I could write pages and
pages about the brilliant Scouting I have the
privilege to be involved with, but where’s the fun
in that? Please, if you have anything you think you
can contribute, even if it’s only a few bullet points,
they will be gratefully received!
During the trip they
did a mixture of
culture visits, and fun
Scouting things, such
as high ropes. An
experience they’ll all
remember for a very
long time.
Jo was pleased to attend
Group Carol Service and listen
to the Scouts retelling the Christmas story and listen as the Beavers and
Cubs sang their songs as well as everyone joining in traditional
Christmas Carols.
We welcome to the District (since the last issue)
the following people who have decided to take
out adult appointments. Please note this list does
not include change of appointments or Occasional

Jo enjoyed an evening of puzzle

presenting a chief scout gold

Jo
did
complain
afterwards that her brain ached
from having to think logically!
We were also pleased to join the
group for their Remembrance
parade and to present Kevin with
his wood beads before the
parade started.
Jo attended the inaugural

on the driving range. However,
Jo’s ability to play golf was sadly
lacking and lots more practice
will be needed to be as good as
any of the Explorers!

We are now looking for nominations from your section for this award.
All of our young people are special but we wish to celebrate the best of them. At this year’s
Annual General Meeting a young person from each section will be awarded the title of
Young person of the year 2011. They will receive a trophy and certificate in recognition of
this.
We invite you to nominate one young person from your section. NOMINATIONS
TO BE RETURNED BY 1st MARCH 2012. Nominated young people should not
necessarily be those who have gained the most badges but rather those who
have overcome an adversity, grown in confidence, or mastered something
they thought impossible. You might also like to consider nominating a
young person who has been particularly helpful or raised sums for charity.
There could be many other reasons to nominate your young person. All
nominated young people will
receive a certificate
acknowledging their
