Being a Badger
Badgers is especially for young people
aged between 5 and 10 years old.
Usually, they meet together every

At Badgers you will have loads of fun. You get
to wear a uniform, play games, do crafts, learn
lots of new things, make new friends and
become a Badger first aider.
Being a Badger is all about taking part and
working for the Super Badger Award. This is
the highest award a Badger can get.
You have to collect
before you get it!

Cadets
10-17 years old
Cadets started in 1922, so they have been around a lot

first aid skills to help the public at pop concerts and
football matches.

Adults
Your Badger leaders are adult members of St John
Ambulance! Adults do lots of other work for St John
Ambulance and meet at adult units. Some are first
aiders and some drive an ambulance. They all help
other people.
Some Cadets also help out at
Badger Setts.
If you have any Badger helpers
in your Sett, ask them if they go
to Cadets as well!

Being a Followme Badger!
When you are about 9 years old,
your Badger leader will ask you to
help out at your Sett.
Being a Follow-me Badger is a very
important job. You will do things
like helping new Badgers find out
what being a Badger is all about.
It will also help you get ready for
moving on to Cadets.
You will still be able to take part in the Badger
subjects and work for your Super Badger Award,
but as you are an older Badger many younger
Badgers will want your help and advice.
41
The Follow-me Badger markings
42
How do I get to be a Follow-me
Badger?
Your Badger Sett leader will help you choose six
‘taster’ activities to try out for about 12 weeks.
The tasters are the sorts of jobs your Badger
leader will ask you to do to help out in your
Badger Sett. When you complete all six tasters,
you will be a Follow-me Badger! You can then
wear your Follow-me Badger markings on your
uniform.
Make sure you stamp your Badger
passport so you know how many
tasters you have done.

Lead drill
Now you are a Follow-me Badger your
Badger leader will ask you to help out
regularly at your Badger Sett.
You might want to do the same thing
every week for a while, or you might
swap jobs with your other Follow-me
Badger friends.
You will get a ‘Thank you’ certificate for trying your
best at each job.

The Cadet Membership Award is just like the
Welcome Paw Award you did when you joined
Badgers. This time you will find out all about
Cadets! And because you are a Badger, two of
your Badger subjects will count towards your
Grand Prior Award — which is the very highest
award a Cadet can get!
It will help you find out more about St John
Ambulance and its history, how to wear your
Cadet uniform and lots of information about
Cadets. There are six parts:
54
•
•
Introduction to first aid
•
What to wear and when — finding out about
how to wear the Cadet uniform
•
Cadet life — finding out about what a Cadet
does and going on duty
•

•

Moving-on
to Cadets
When you are about 10 years old you will
probably have finished your Super Badger
Award and be ready for your next
challenge — Cadets!
When you and some of your Badger friends are ready
to move on, you can find out more about what Cadets
do and start working towards the Cadet Membership
Award. While you are doing the Cadet Membership
Award you will be very busy. You will go to meetings
at your Badger Sett and your Cadet unit.
You can record your visits on

Because this is your Moving-on Ceremony
you get to help plan it! Some of the things you
will need to think of are shown below.
When
The date your Moving-on ceremony will happen.
Where
This will probably be at your Badger Sett, but if
it is summer you might want to hold it outside!
Who to invite
You will probably want to invite your family
and friends. Your Badger leader will help you
decide who to invite from your Cadet unit.
Don’t forget to send out invitations!
What will happen
You will probably have lots of ideas for
entertaining your guests! It might be a first aid
demonstration, a games night, a play, activities
from your favourite Badger subjects, songs...
the list is endless!
The ceremony
You will be asked to say a few words about
what you enjoyed about Badgers. Don’t panic —
there are some ideas on the next page
to help you!
58
My Moving-on
Ceremony
This is a special ceremony to recognise
everything you have achieved as
a Badger.
Before you can join Cadets, you
and your Badger friends who
are also moving on will want to
say goodbye and thank you to
everyone in your Badger Sett.
This is your Moving-on
Ceremony.
Don’t worry about a thing!
Your Badger leaders and your
other Badger friends who are
moving on will all help with
ideas.

Did you know?
Badger families live underground in a Sett.
(That’s why you meet in a Badger Sett!)
Badgers favourite food is earthworms. They eat
about 200 every day! Yum yum!
Badgers live underground by day and come out
to look for food at night.
Badgers are black and white so they can hide
well in moonlight and shadows.
Badgers have small ears so they don’t get in the
way when they are digging tunnels!
Badgers are very bad at crossing roads because they
cannot see or hear very well. Perhaps they need to
learn their Green Cross Code!
Badgers scoop out toilets for themselves, so they
can keep their Sett clean.
