Striking a Balance
Now that cooler weather is here, many residents
are searching for a balance between conserving
energy use and staying warm at home. As the use
of fuel for heating increases, the baseline for
energy use comparison groups will rise, but
deliberate conservation efforts will always be
evident in the ever changing baseline.

For those who are incentivized to conserve, one
challenge may be to find the best indoor
temperatures for the times when people are
home. While it will vary household to household,
those who like the house to be cooler during
sleeping hours may want the house to be warm
when everyone is starting their day and set their
heat accordingly. For those who are at home
during the day, the activities of the day may burn
enough calories for people to stay warm with a
slightly lower temperature setting than is used at
the start of the day, but experimentation may be
needed. In the evening, most people will need to
wear warm clothes while relaxing at home to be
both comfortable and conserve energy.
To review the basics:
Those who use more
energy than the average use for their house plan
type are billed only for the amount that is used
above that average. Those whose energy use is
within the average range see no change. Those
who conserve the most energy receive rebates.
BBC is tasked with carrying out the Army’s utility
billing energy conservation program at West Point.
It is not a BBC program and BBC does not profit
from the utility billing program. To learn more
