NETBALL REPRESENTATIVE SQUADS NAMED
The Northern Netball League has announced
its representative squads for this year’s
interleague matches.
For the first time the league will field both an open-age
and under-19 team in its two representative fixtures.
The league will first square off against the Southern
Football Netball League on Friday May 13 at Parade
College.
It will be the second successive year the NNL plays
against the SFNL, after last year recording two
commanding wins in the league’s first foray into
representative netball.
The following Saturday the NNL’s open-age and
under-19 teams will travel to Rye to take on the
Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football Netball
League on May 21.
The matches against the MPNFL will be played
in conjunction with the NFL’s senior football
representative match at Rye’s R.J. Rowley Recreation
Reserve, in the 2016 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community
Championships.
The NNL open-age netball team will be coached
by Bundoora mentor Jacinta Tonkin, while
Greensborough’s Sharon Ashworth will coach the
under-19 team.
Ashworth last year coached the NNL B-Grade team
in its victory over the SFNL.
Brooke George will assist both coaches after coaching
the NNL’s A-Grade team to its 13-goal win over the
SFNL last year.
The NNL congratulates the players selected
in the two representative squads.
Below are the open-age and under-19 squads

BULLS BUILDING EARLY MOMENTUM
by Dan Campbell
Statements in Division 1 don’t come much bigger than
defeating the ladder-leader at its home ground.
Bundoora managed to do just that in Round 3, beating
a red-hot Greensborough at War Memorial Park by 16
points to get its season back on track.
Making the win all the more momentous, Bundoora
took the points without two of its best players – captain
Brent Marshall and livewire forward Gary Moorcroft.
After a slow start to 2016, with the Bulls soundly beaten
by reigning premier Macleod in Round 1, Phil Plunkett’s
men have steadied over the past fortnight to make a
statement to the rest of the competition.
“We were very pleased,” senior coach Phil Plunkett told
The Northerner.
“We hadn’t beaten (Greensborough) since our
premiership year (2013) so hopefully that’s a good
omen going forward.
“Montmorency (at their home ground) beat us there
last year, and Macleod took it to a new level (and) that
was a bit of an eye-opener for us.
“We’ve been able to get our season back on track and
hopefully it gives us a good start to the first half of the
season.”
With the off-season addition of experienced players
that come with previous success – including the likes of
David Mitchell and Trent and Troy Barbero – along with
young talent like Will Flanders and Isaac Muller, the
Bulls’ list has struck a delicate balance.
The list, comprised of a healthy blend of older heads,
emerging youngsters, and experienced recruits, has
struck a certain chemistry and has gelled together
nicely in the opening rounds of 2016, according to
Plunkett.
“(The new recruits) have settled in pretty well. We’ve
been able to keep the majority of our list as it was.
We’ve got a massive nucleus of new players but we’re
just sort of potting them here and there,” Plunkett said.
“I think the boys that we’ve had previously as well as
who stayed around from last year have gelled together
nicely and made a good transition for the new guys to
work out how they want to play.”
The club’s elder statesmen continue to deliver, including
Gary Moorcroft, the eldest player on Bundoora’s list. The
4
THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football League Record
high flier has shown no signs of slowing down, booting
four goals against Montmorency on his 40th birthday.
On every line, the Bulls boast an edge of sheer
experience and football nous.
“Gary’s one of my hardest trainers and I can’t see him
slowing up too soon,” Plunkett said.
“The elder statesmen are (playing) their roles. Ben
Shelton, he’s another one that’s been around for a while
and has really got the backline humming along and he’s
one of the generals down there.
“The two Barbero boys (Trent and Troy) and David
Mitchell, there’s a few of them with experience having
won premierships over the last couple of years.
“We’ve got a good nucleus of older and newer guys.”
With Bundoora hosting Lower Plenty at Yulong Reserve
this week, Plunkett believes no team in Division 1 can
afford to become complacent, especially during a run
of form which the Bulls have produced in the past
fortnight.
The Bulls last year fell to their first ever home loss to
Lower Plenty when beaten by 37 points in Round 10
and are looking to reverse that result on Saturday.
“We won’t be taking any team lightly,” Plunkett said.
“It’s been one of the best things about this competition,
not only last year but the last few years. It’s very even
so you don’t have any opportunities to play against an
easier team.
“You can’t take your foot off the pedal at all.”

LIONS SCORE VITAL WIN
by Doug Long
South Morang claimed an important win over close
neighbour Epping to get its 2016 campaign back on track.
The Lions went into its Meringue Cafe Cup Anzac Day
contest at Mill Park Lakes Reserve at 0-3 and two games
out of the top four. The game began with an Anzac
commemoration, with players lining up for the last post
in front of a huge crowd. The Lions had first use of a
healthy breeze and peppered the goals early.
It was a high pressure game early with plenty of fierce
tackling. The Blues soon settled and hit the front midterm with goals to Damien Walker – a good contributor
on the day – and Aaron Willitts. Two minutes later,
Wayne Pavitt goaled after a free to put the Lions back
in front. Thereafter, South Morang never surrendered
the lead. “We were challenged during the week,” Lions
coach Dean Grainger said “The boys showed what they
could do, playing as a team.”
Epping was beaten in most facets of the game. But it
briefly looked a winner early in the final stanza.
The Blues had the breeze – although it had dropped later
in the day – and drew to within six points after goals to
key forwards Daniel Moore and Willitts. Moore’s goal was
a booming kick from outside 50 and went gun-barrel
straight. More highlights – of different sorts – were to
follow. Both involved Lion recruit Kane Maghamez.
Mitch Buckley had been terrific for South Morang. He
stuck a great tackle in midfield and won a free. The play
was transferred forward where Paul Harrison got the
ball on to a running Maghamez for what was to be the
final goal of the game.
It gave the Lions some breathing space. Minutes
later, Maghamez thrilled the crowd with an amazing
specie. He seemed to hover in the air for an eternity
as he clasped the ball. The pass had come from team
mate Mitch Hicks. Hicks had been instrumental late in
the game in turning defence into attack. He was later
awarded the Anzac Day medal.
Surprisingly, Lion forward Nick Johnston played in
defence on Willitts. The move proved to be a success –
with Willitts limited to two majors. Mathew Robinson
held Chris Chilcott to two goals, with the Lions defence
doing an excellent job of helping each other out
throughout the day.

THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football League Record
“Through poor kicking, they gave us an opportunity,
but we weren’t good enough to take it,” Epping coach
Greg Whitcroft lamented.
In retrospect, a miracle comeback by Epping would
have been a steal. With 14 more scoring shots, South
Morang thoroughly deserved the win. The Blues
regularly found themselves under pressure, but also
missed targets later in the final term when players were
in open space. Both 23rd men had an influence on the
game. Blue Jason Stavely showed good composure to
slot a goal from 35 metres out on an angle just before
the main break. It reduced the half-time margin to a
manageable 11 points. Mitchell Dickson played his
first senior game for Lions. He kicked a goal, took a
courageous mark under pressure and looked like a
seasoned veteran with his ball use.
The Lions will go into this week’s match with
Heidelberg West at Heidelberg Park full of confidence.
Epping has a more difficult assignment it faces
Watsonia at A.K. Lines Reserve.
FINAL SCORE:
South Morang 10.18 (78) def Epping 10.4 (64)

BEARS RALLY TO RECORD EMOTIONAL WIN
by Ben Pascuzzi
Lower Plenty ended the toughest week in its history
with a resounding come-from-behind 29-point victory
over Whittlesea in Round 3.
Trailing for most of the day, the Bears came from
six points behind at three-quarter time to boot six
unanswered goals the final term, winning 20.10
(130) to 15.11 (101) in front of a packed house at
Montmorency Park.
After enduring a devastating week following the tragic
death of Patrick Cronin, and stalwart Tony Barden,
Lower Plenty was able to find something special in the
last quarter to mark the silver lining on what has been a
tragic chapter for the club.
The emotion was never clearer than when Billy Barden
kicked the final goal of the match. His emotion was
there for all to see as he celebrated the goal with the
crowd, signifying how much the win meant to his club.
After the match, both clubs and the majority of the
crowd gather in the centre of the ground in a touching
tribute to Cronin – a true sign of the unity within the
league in a time of grief for Lower Plenty.
Emotions aside, this was one of the better games
that has been produced in the Meadows Greyhounds
Division 1 competition this season, with the
momentum swinging both ways throughout the
contest.
Corey Sleep got the Bears off to the perfect start in the
first term, kicking the first goal after taking a strong
grab in the opening minute. However, the Eagles were
able to reply with goals from Brenton Briffa and Andrew
Fairchild, although they were 15 minutes apart.
Two goal exchanges saw out the rest of the first term
with the Eagles holding on to a two-point lead at the
first change.
Whittlesea started the better in the second term,
putting through the first two goals in quick succession
to open up a 13-point buffer. Sleep snagged his second
in reply for Lower Plenty, however the Eagles piled on
another two goals to extend the lead to 19 points.
Just as Whittlesea seemed to be in control of the match,
the momentum swung the home side’s way. Successive
goals saw the deficit reduced to seven points midway
through the quarter.
The sides went goal for goal for the next 10 minutes,
before Tom Keys made it consecutive goals for Lower
Plenty to push his side within a point of the lead.
Whittlesea responded to the Bears’ challenge with
consecutive goals late in the term to stretch its lead to
12 points at the main break.
Blake Poyser snapped a goal over his head to get Lower
Plenty off to the perfect start in the third term, before
Billy Barden unloaded from beyond the 50m arc to tie
proceedings.
The sides again went goal-for-goal throughout the
third term, which included a major to Lucas Cronin –
who wore his brother’s No.12 on his back during his
second senior match.
Whittlesea midfielder Matt Dornauf broke the trend,
giving his side consecutive goals after receiving a free
kick in the goal square and converting to give the
Eagles a five-point lead at three-quarter time.
Barden booted his third goal for Lower Plenty to kickstart the final term, reducing the margin to just one
point.
With both sides desperate to notch their first win of the
season, it was Lower Plenty who took control in the last
quarter. Goals to Poyser, Jordan Sacco, Ayden Doumtsis
and Barden fourth saw the Bears run out victors by 29
points.
FINAL SCORE:
Lower Plenty 20.10 (130)
def Whittlesea 15.11 (101)

PANTHERS TOO SLICK FOR MAGPIES
by Connor O’Leary
Eltham recorded its first win of 2016 with a 21-point
victory over Montmorency in a free-flowing game at
Eltham Central Park.
Despite trailing at half time, the Panthers broke the
game open with a six-goal third term to leave the
Magpies in their wake en route to a 17.11 (113) to 13.14
(92) win.
Montmorency was unable to keep up with Eltham’s
spread and ball movement throughout much of the
second half, as the Magpies found it difficult to break
through the Panthers’ defensive zone.
Eltham coach Mario Bandera was proud of his side’s
second half display after back-to-back losses to last
year’s grand finalists in the opening two rounds.
“Up until half time we weren’t playing well, then in the
third quarter and 75% of the last quarter we played the
sort of footy that we know we can play,” Bandera said.
“The first two weeks of the season haven’t been that
good so we were shaky early, but the way we finished
off the game was pleasing.”
Anton Woods, Billy Glasgow and Gavan Connelly were
key cogs in Eltham’s midfield and had a hand in many
of the Panthers’ forward attacks.
Josh Merkel won his battle with Craig Flint inside
Eltham’s forward 50 with five goals, whilst Daniel
Coffield was important across half-back.
Montmorency was left to rue its inaccuracy throughout
the second term, converting just four of its 11
opportunities for the quarter.
Ben Fennell didn’t miss a beat in his first game of
the season for the Magpies with an excellent display
through the middle, with Daniel Keenan and Liam
Nunan also continuing their hot starts to 2016.
Eltham was able to control the contest early and open
up an 11-point buffer at the first change, largely off the
back of Tom Rogers’ run.
The Magpies’ attempts to switch and move the footy
at speed were often closed down by the Panthers,
however after an early goal to Eltham’s Chris Brannan in
the second quarter it was all Montmorency.
Keenen was able to find space inside forward 50 and
convert for Montmorency against the run of play,
before goals to Mitch Dillon and Nunan suddenly had
the Magpies ahead.
Montmorency’s tackling pressure was paying dividends,
as it began to arrest momentum through midfield and
seemingly be first to every contest.
Staring at a seven-point half time deficit, the Panthers
responded.
A goal to Merkel was cancelled out soon after by Ned
Taylor, however goals to Connelly, Jye Lorey and Kieran
Malone soon had Eltham back in control.
Montmorency continued to hang around through
Patrick Fitzgerald, however ill discipline cost the
Magpies dearly as Glasgow converted a simple set shot
immediately following a 50-metre penalty at the centre
bounce after Chase Caulfield’s goal.
Eltham’s intent at the stoppages was key in its 22-point
three-quarter-time lead and it continued to press home
its advantage with five of the first seven goals in the
last term.
The Magpies were able to add some respectability to
the scoreboard late in the piece with goals to Fitzgerald,
Jesse Donaldson and Stephen McCallum, however it
was unfortunately all too late for Montmorency.
Winless so far in 2016, the Magpies return home to face
a Greensborough outfit coming off its first loss of the
season in Round 4, whilst Eltham will head up Plenty
Road to tackle newly-promoted Whittlesea.
FINAL SCORE:
Eltham 17.11 (113) def Montmorency 13.14 (92)

BLOODS END WINLESS STREAK IN THRILLER
by Christopher Chrysostomou
Lalor notched up its first win of the season with a
thrilling five-point victory over undefeated Diamond
Creek in Round 3.
A five-goal haul from full forward, Todd Hughes and a best
on ground display from Scott Dowell set up the 12.7 (79)
to 11.8 (74) victory.
In a game, which saw numerous lead changes, Lalor
showed glimmers of the footy that led them to last year’s
Grand Final.
With AFL legend Kevin Sheedy present to toss the coin, Lalor
looked like a side on a mission to impress. The home side’s
high intensity brand of football saw them kick the first three
goals of the game, two coming off the boot of Hughes.
Diamond Creek was sloppy in possession and failed to
capitalise on many of its forward 50 entries.
That changed when Daniel Shallard kicked the Demons
first and Oliver Parks added a second within a minute to
cut the Bloods’ lead to three points at quarter time.
The second term saw the Demons return to the form that
had seen them win their first two games of the season.
If not for wayward set shots, the Demons could have led
by more than four points at half time. Parks is one player
who will need goal kicking practice this week, after taking
one of the worst set shots imaginable to miss from 15
metres out, directly in front.
It took more than half of the second term for the Demons
to add to their goal tally, but when they did, it came from
the boot of Simon Buchanan.
Matt Aquilina was awarded a 50-metre penalty and slotted
a certain goal on the siren to give Diamond Creek a fourpoint lead at half time.
With the game evenly contested, Shallard and Hugh
Kavanagh kicked early third term goals as the Demons
looked to break the game open.
But to Lalor’s credit, it stayed resilient and managed to
reclaim the lead via two goals from Hughes and a single to
Dowell. The seesawing term continued as Lalor managed to
peg a goal back whenever the Demons added to their tally.
A massive goal from outside 50 by Jedd McQueen was
replicated by Spencer Christopher, who pulled down a
massive contested mark and slotted home a major to
reclaim the Bloods lead.
10
THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football League Record
But as they did in the second term, the Demons converted
the final two goals of the quarter to set up a nine-point
advantage, heading into the final term.
Lalor, keen to avoid another defeat, looked the team more
determined in the final quarter. The Bloods controlled the
quarter and through their ball pressure they created many
Diamond Creek turnovers.
Timmy Peck kick-started the Bloods fight back with a
dribble goal to reduce the Demons lead to two points.
Hughes then slotted home his fifth goal for the game,
through a snapped effort after a free kick was awarded to
the Bloods on the boundary, 40 metres out from goal.
A silly 50-metre penalty given away by Kane Toronis
enabled the Demons to register their first goal of the
quarter and reclaim a one-point lead.
But all would be forgotten when Spencer Christopher
snapped an incredible goal from the left forward pocket
on his left foot to snatch back the lead for the Bloods.
The Demons tried to get the ball forward as quickly as
possible, but there was not enough time as the Bloods
held on for a five-point win.
FINAL SCORE:
Lalor 12.7 (79) def Diamond Creek 11.8 (74)

BURRA MAINTAIN UNBEATEN START
by Nicholas Sacco
St Mary’s continued its unbeaten start to the Division
3 season, defeating Banyule by two points in a tight
game at R.J. Brockwell Oval.
With the result heading towards a draw, behinds from
Matthew Patti and Nicholas Daisley late in the final
quarter were enough to see the Burra finish with a
12.11 (83) to 11.15 (81) victory.
Without recruit Chris Tarrant, the Bears will rue their
wastefulness in front of goal as they slumped to their
third successive defeat by less than a goal.
The lead changed eight times throughout the game,
with the margin never greater than 14 points –
illustrating how close the game was for the entirety.
Players observed two-minutes silence before the
opening bounce, honouring Lower Plenty player Patrick
Cronin who died tragically last week, as well as paying
respect to all those who have served in battle for
Australia.
Banyule didn’t miss a beat in the opening minutes.
Daniel Kelly, playing his first game since crossing from
Heidelberg, produced an electric start, kicking two
quick goals to put the Bears on the front foot early.
The Burra didn’t seem to worried about their poor start,
responding perfectly. Jake Dambrauskas fired back with
two majors, before Lachlan Potter and Patti also kicked
truly to give the visitors an eight-point lead at quarter
time.
Banyule coach Jason Plant was calm in the quarter time
huddle, reminding his team to “expect hard tackles” as
St Mary’s has become accustomed for in 2016.
The second term started in almost identical fashion to
the first. The Bears took advantage of St Mary’s backline
mistakes as Jake Hooper and Michael Italia booted
majors to again build a strong start for the home side.
A scrappy contest followed throughout the second
quarter as the Bears continued their poor kicking
form, while a lack of cohesion from the visitors made it
difficult for them to take clear possession.
A late goal from Nicholas Dean ensured that the Burra
held the lead heading into half time.
In the third quarter, Banyule again started well with
Ben Nethercote snapping his first for the afternoon,
while Devin McDonald was very impressive around the
ground, taking strong, contested marks and creating
opportunities.
The Burra continued to keep pace however, with Potter
continuing his wonderful game by kicking his second
goal.
A goal-for-goal contest followed, but sloppy disposal
and a lack of support from their talls saw the Bears still
trailing by three points at three quarter time.
Burra coach Con Borg added some Anzac sprit into his
three quarter time address telling his troops “to play
their role” and to “sacrifice for their teammates”.
An exciting last term followed. Kelly added his fourth of
the day for the hosts, before St Mary’s kicked four of the
next five goals to open up a match-high 14-point lead
at the 21-minute mark of the quarter.
McDonald almost became the saviour for Banyule,
kicking two goals in two minutes to reduce the margin
to a solitary point. Kelly kicked a behind to tie the
scores, however it wasn’t to be for the Bears as the
Patti and Daisley behinds were enough for the Burra to
notch their fourth conseucitve win.
Potter and Dambrauskas were both important for the
visitors, combining for six goals. For the home side,
Kelly was a standout with four majors while McDonald
was brilliant kicking three last quarter goals to give his
side an opportunity to win the game.
St Mary’s next faces fellow undefeated side Mernda at
Waterview Recreation Reserve, while Banyule will look
to break its three-game losing streak when it takes on
Kilmore at J.J.Clancy Reserve.
FINAL SCORE:
Banyule 11.15 (81) def by St Mary’s 12.11 (83)

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 - Preview
A CLOSE RUN RACE
It’s a much anticipated Round 4 coming up in Meadows
Greyhounds Division 1, following a weekend of surprise
results in the top flight.
It’s a much anticipated Round 4 coming up in
Meadows Greyhounds Division 1, following a weekend
of surprise results in the top flight.
This week’s action includes a top-three clash between
West Preston-Lakeside and Heidelberg at J.E Moore
Park.
West Preston-Lakeside succumbed to its first defeat
of the season last Saturday when it was beaten at
Northcote Park. The Roosters registered the opening
five scoring shots, but were otherwise on the back
foot in the 26-point defeat. Patrick Karnezis was the
Roosters’ best in defeat, booting four goals to jump to
second on the goal kicking table.
Heidelberg recorded its best win in 12 months when it
came from behind to beat Macleod on Anzac Day. The
Tigers managed just two majors in the opening half
but rallied to kick 11 second-half goals in the 21-point
win. Sam Gilmore was a dominant force in the ruck,
while Paul Bower and Jake Truefeldt –in his first senior
game for the Tigers – also excelled.
Bundoora and Lower Plenty will both be looking to
back up fantastic Round 3 wins when they meet at
Yulong Reserve.
Phil Plunkett’s side claimed its first win over
Greensborough since 2013 in last week’s 16-point
upset. Without key duo Brent Marshall and Gary
Moorcroft, the Bulls booted 1.10 in the opening term.
They straightened up thereafter to claim a gutsy win
and assume a spot in the top five. Liam Byrne, Isaac
Muller and Will Flanders led the way.
Words can’t describe the courage Lower Plenty
displayed last week as it honoured Patrick Cronin with
one if its greatest wins against Whittlesea. The Bears
kicked six unanswered goals in the last quarter to run
away for their first for the season. Bill Barden and Tom
Keys combined for eight majors, while Lucas Cronin’s
first goal in senior football was a highlight.
Macleod and Northcote Park will both be hoping to
improve their record to 3-1 when they square off at De
Winton Park.
The Roos looked to have last week’s game against
Heidelberg under control when they led by four goals
during the third term. However, the reigning premiers
were powerless to stop the rampant Tigers in the
by Samuel Zito
final 40 minutes as they slumped it their first defeat
since last year’s semi final. Macleod’s best players came
from defence with Jack Bianchin, Joel Kidd and Hayden
Seivers all in their side’s best six.
Northcote Park showed resolve to get back on the
winners’ list against West Preston-Lakeside. With the
game in the balance, the Cougars played their best
football of the season in the last quarter, booting
seven goals before the visitors added three majors
in red time. Julian Violato’s strong start to the season
continued, while Lachlan Boscarini, Jordan Perry and
Damian Galaforo also impressed.
Following its first away game of the season,
Whittlesea returns to its home paddock to host
Eltham.
Whittlesea couldn’t go with Lower Plenty in the final 30
minutes of last week’s loss at Montmorency Park. The
Eagles headed into the game as favourites following
two close losses to start the year, however they ended
the round with 0-3. Justin Sherman was solid across
four quarters, while Matt Dornauf and Tom Falls were
also among the Eagles’ best.
Eltham last week showed signs of returning to its
2015 form in its 21-point win over Montmorency.
Josh Merkel was a standout with five goals, with
Anton Woods, Daniel Coffield and Gavan Connelly.
The Panthers could move inside the top five should
Round 4 results go their way, although Whittlesea
Showgrounds has been a tricky venue recently.
Montmorency and Greensborough are both looking
to return to winning ways at Montmorency Park.
Montmorency sits at the foot of the Division 1 ladder
despite being competitive in all three losses this
season. Ben Haynes’ young side has been made to pay
for lapses in each game, with last week’s poor third
quarter the difference against Eltham after leading at
the main break. Ben Fennell was his side’s best player,
along with veteran Daniel Keenan and young gun
Connor Dalgleish.
Greensborough is also on the rebound following last
week’s upset defeat to Bundoora. The Bulls kept the
Boro in the contest with their wastefulness in the
opening term. Thereafter it was the men in green
who couldn’t convert, booting a wayward 5.19 in the
16-point loss. Nick Carnell was superb with his attack
on the ball, while Josh Callaway and Jack Johnston put
in solid showings.

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1
MACLEOD
The seniors suffered their first loss for the year while
the reserves impressed.
SENIORS: Once again, it was a great honour to be
involved in the Anzac Day clash v Heidelberg and
congratulations to all for the pre-game ceremonies.
On the field, it was mixed results with the seniors
squandering a four-goal lead in the third term to go
down by 21 points. The Tigers ran all over the top of us
with a seven-goal final term. Our defence had held up
pretty well for the first three quarters but our forwards
struggled on the big ground and our delivery was not
up to the usual high standard. Better players came from
the backline – Jack Bianchin, Joel Kidd and Hayden
Seivers, while Matty Clark impressed in his first senior
appearance in 2016.
RESERVES: The reserves held their previous unbeaten
opponents to just three goals in the first three quarters
and held off the Tigers’ final quarter comeback. Liam
Wanders and Jai Swainger were among the best players
in the 21-point win.
NORTHCOTE PARK
A very good Anzac Day weekend, where all three
teams recorded good wins. Thank you to West PrestonLakeside for playing the games in a competitive
manner and in the right spirit.
LAST WEEK: Great to see all teams observe a
minute’s silence for Anzac Day and Lower Plenty
footballer Patrick Cronin who passed away in tragic
circumstances.
SENIORS: West Preston had 1.4 on the board before
we even had a sniff. Thanks to some Jordan Perry and
Nik McNiece magic and a hard-working defence, we
managed a point lead at quarter time. Our second
quarter was good where we kicked 4.8. The mosquito
fleet led by Bronik started to get on top, with Thorpie
and Brody Ricardi stepping up to the plate. The defence
led by Harmit and Jules were keeping the opposing
forwards in check. West Preston bounced back in the
third but thanks to some accurate goal kicking by
Ricky, Brock and Paul we held an eight-point at the
last change. Our last quarter was a very good teamoriented performance. If not for three goals by West
Preston in junk time we would have recorded a bigger

win, but nevertheless it was good to get the win and
retain the Mellerick/McNiece Cup.
RESERVES: The highlight was the great 10-goal
performance by Mitch Papas. The boys were led by a
rebounding defence, working well with the on ball
division who controlled the game.
UNDER-19: Last week marked the debut of the next
generation of the proud Amad family. Michael, son of
club great Joe, played well up forward. West Preston,
whilst outclassed, never gave up and made our boys
work hard. Some big marking from forwards Kizza,
Andre and the Waldron boys were highlights. Our
back men Sam and the Brown boys were miserly and
midfielders Simmo, Aydin, Ben, Al, Nathan and Jesse
worked hard. The highlight was the goal of the year
contender from Arthur Phlorides. Knowing what this
young man has gone through to, it was great to see his
teammates get around him.
SOCIAL: 12 months in the making, we finally get
the Bizarre Gazzard to our rooms. Saturday April 30 at
7.30pm. Cost is $50 per head and includes finger food
drinks at bar prices.

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1
MONTMORENCY
A big task for Ben Haynes and his boys today when we
host neighbours Greensborough.
VALE: Patrick Cronin - MFNC is deeply saddened by
the tragic passing of Patrick Cronin. The MFNC offers
its sincere condolences to Patrick’s family and friends,
Lower Plenty FC and Research JFC in this difficult time.
The entire Montmorency community would like to
commend Lower Plenty and Research on how they
have supported the Cronin family during these trying
times. We also pass on our condolences following the
passing of Tony ‘Tiger’ Barden, who was a much loved
and highly respected man with a long association with
Montmorency and Lower Plenty. Tony will be greatly
missed by his many friends.
SENIORS: The Panthers proved a little too strong
for us as we again failed to produce a four-quarter
performance. This is to be expected with such a young
Mont crew as they learn the ropes. Whilst today will be
a big challenge there is no question we will be focused
upon producing a strong performance.
RESERVES: Still looking to break the ice for 2016 and
GREENSBOROUGH
Today we take on old rival Montmorency away.
SENIORS: We fell to our first loss of the season at the
hands of a fired up Bundoora. We controlled the game
in patches, but failed to capitalise on opportunities in
front of goal, ending up kicking 5.19 to fall 16 points
short. Nick Carnell continues to have a big influence
and he was ably supported by the midfield group, but it
is crucial we bounce back this week vs the old foe.
RESERVES: Burst out of the blocks against an
undefeated Bundoora, leading by four goals at quarter
time, bringing the pressure and intensity required
early in games. We got out to a nine-goal to one lead
before the boys switched off and left the door open for
Bundoora, who reduced the margin to 26 points at half
time. The boys switched back on and ran out 32-point
winners. A massive effort from our undermanned side
against a good team, which will hold us in good stead
going forward. Josh Doherty and John Pritchard played
enormous games.

THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football League Record
today will be a real challenge against an always strong
Greensborough. It is top vs bottom so we will need to
bring our very best to the table.
UNDER-19: Today’s match is between the clubs who
have contested the past two grand finals. Darren Kane’s
youngsters got home last week against the Panthers
after a real scare in the final quarter.
NETBALL: After a modest start to the season the
two netball teams have produced some very strong
performances in recent weeks. The girls are really
enjoying their netball each Friday.
JUNIORS: It was great to host Darren Boulton’s
under-16 Magpies at the club last Thursday. This young
Mont crew are having another terrific season and in
great hands.
THE CLUB: Our first Business Luncheon was held on
Friday and proved to be an outstanding success. Many
thanks for all those who supported the event. Also, a big
shout out to the hardworking MFNC executive. The team
of Greg Bowman, Mark Cleary, Mark Smith, Mick Grattan
and Ray Bowman are doing a stellar job in 2016. Well
done and on behalf of everyone at Magpieland.
UNDER-19: The future stars were locked in a tight
battle early, leading the Bulls by eight points at the
half. But a five-goal haul from Billy Bedford saw the
boys run out 56-point winners, kicking nine goals to
one in the second half. It was the seasoned boys who
stood up to be counted for, with Mitch Hill and Jacob
Ireland leading the way. Massive game today in the GF
rematch.
SOCIAL NOTES: BORO Frat Party is on tonight (April
30) at the clubrooms, so dig out your Americanised
costumes and we’ll see you there! The year’s best
function “Mr BORO” is on May 14, so please get your
wives/girlfriends/friends to book their table at the
rooms or by organising with a player.
INTERESTING ANDREW STELLAS: “Dear Diary, it’s
been a busy week, but as usual, I’ve managed to fit
in 36 holes of virtual golf a day, it’s pretty taxing, but
somebody has to do it. Jason Tucker keeps saying I
should take him out for a round of golf, I doubt I will.
Mr Boro is coming up soon, I’m in career best nick so I’m
not worried. AS. (Mr Boro 2016).”

HEIDELBERG
A bumper crowd were treated to a high quality contest
at Warringal Park on Anzac Day.
SENIORS: Macleod held sway for much of the day but
a stirring second half saw the Bergs run out winners by
21 points. Paul Bower and Sam Gilmore were standouts and Bruiser’s explosive pace was great to see.
Symesy was moved forward in the last and clunked a
few nice marks and calmly slotted home the goals.
RESERVES: Macleod was too strong in the reserves
match, getting away early and were never headed
thereafter.
THANKS: Thanks again to Montmorency / Eltham
RSL and the NFL for their support of our Anzac Day
commemorations. It meant a lot to everyone involved
on the day.

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1
WHITTLESEA
Emotional week now passed, although our thoughts
and prayers will remain with Lower Plenty, the Cronins
and Bardens long after this season has completed.
LAST WEEK: We thank Lower for the day. We are
extremely proud of how we represented ourselves
off the field and throughout the day and would like
to express our sincerest thanks to all our supporters,
players and officials for the way in which they
conducted themselves. With that said, disappointing
is the best way in which we can describe the results
on the field. All three teams performed below
expectations. We need to rectify this immediately.
LADIES DAY: Today is all about our female supporters,
officials, committee members and players who
contribute so much to the club. A huge thanks must go
to Nicole Toll and Clare Atkins for their organisation of
the day.
CONGRATULATIONS: To Chloe Grimes and Holly
Oates who have been selected to represent the NNL in
the under-19 NNL interleague squad. Great effort girls!
TODAY: It’s not make or break, it’s a long season
ELTHAM
Whittlesea are always hard to beat at the Showgrounds
so we need to have the right attitude again this week.
LAST WEEK: Great to break the ice with a strong win
against Montmorency last week and retain the Ken
Hines Shield. Thanks to Mont for the big crowd that
stuck around after the game. With the way the weekend
results went, we are just one win from second spot. It
looks like it going to be a very competitive season in
2016. We need to be up for it every week from now on.
PRESIDENT’S LUNCH WITH PETER DAISCOS: The
2016 President’s Lunch will be held on Saturday May
14 from 11:30am to 2.00pm prior to our home game
against Heidelberg. The lunch will be held at the Central
Park clubrooms and will feature the Macedonian
Marvel – ex Collingwood star Peter Daicos. Cost is just
$80 per head, all inclusive, with two-course meal, beer,
wine and soft drink. Bookings strictly limited due to
room capacity so be quick. Online bookings available at
elthamfc.com.au.
LADIES LUNCH: Ladies Lunch is coming up next

THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football League Record
after all, but we are 0-3 in the seniors and reserves,
1-1 in the 19s come up against a Panthers outfit that
result-wise, aren’t travelling much better. Simon’s
boys are still seeking players however the hope is over
the past fortnight we’ve secured a few blokes to give
us a solid core outfit on a weekly basis. The reserves
are just moments away in games and composure is
needed from a young outfit to get across the line. The
senior boys had questions posed to them last Saturday
evening and today is the day for those questions to be
answered. Are we fit enough? Are we quick enough?
Do we have what it takes? Jim can’t be faulted and
ultimately today it’s about the 23 blokes that run out
there to get the job done.
UNITED: We welcome United Petroleum back as
a sponsor. Details of the partnership have been
forwarded to members via the newsletter.
80’S NIGHT: Next Saturday night it’s back to the
club for 80’s Night. Dust off the flannel, get the ‘happy
pants’ out, mullets are mandatory and HyperColour is
expected. $10 entry for those not ‘dressed up’, $5 for
those that make the effort.
Saturday May 7. Looks like it has been sold out. If you
are lucky you may be able to get a ticket at the door.
PLATINUM PANTHERS MARQUEE DAY: Next
Saturday we are having the Platinum Panthers Marquee
Day. Free food and drink from 1.30pm – 4pm in the
car park marquee. Those who have not joined yet or
renewed membership catch up with Andrew Burns
today or next week at the marquee.
PLATINUM PANTHERS: Increase your involvement
and support for the Panthers in 2016 with a Platinum
Panthers membership for $250. In 2015 we had 67
members and hope to reach 100 this season. Includes
entrance to all home and away games; a beverage in
the social rooms post home games; specially branded
apparel; exclusive Platinum Panther key ring bottle
opener; car park function with marquee in dedicated
area with food and beverages provided from 1:30pm –
4:30pm at our May 7 home game; exclusive pre-game
insight with senior coach Mario Bandera at selected

DIVISION 2 – Preview
TOP FOUR BATTLE HEATS UP
A possible top of the table clash headlines another
exciting week of Division 2 football.
The round kicks off with Hurstbridge hosting the
rested North Heidelberg.
Having had the bye in round 1, Hurstbridge has gone
on to win its opening two games of the season in
convincing fashion. Last week’s 73-point demolition
of Panton Hill sent warning signs to the rest of the
competition of how destructive the Bridges can be
when playing at their best.
Chris Burton was in fine form, kicking six goals, to send
his tally to eight for the season, while Nicholas Milne
and Dale Eames both kicked three apiece. Anthony
Heron was also impressive and was again considered
one of the best for the Bridges.
Hurstbridge will be facing a side keen to add to its one
win for the season, in the form of North Heidelberg.
The Bulldogs last played two weeks ago, when they
narrowly avoided a final term meltdown to beat
Panton Hill by 16 points.
Leigh Gilbert was considered the Bulldogs most
influential player on the day, while Shane Harvey,
Kyle Green and Kyl Ewart kicked multiple goals.
Unfortunately it was likely to be Ewart’s only game of
the season after sustaining an ACL injury.
The last time these two sides played each other was
Round 15, 2014, when the Bulldogs came away with a
41-point victory.
Diamond Creek will be looking to get back on
the winners list when it takes on an undefeated
Thomastown side in fine form.
A win to either side could see them sit on top of
the Division 2 ladder, should North Heidelberg beat
Hurstbridge.
The Demons will be looking to return to the winners
list after a disappointing defeat to Lalor on Sunday. Far
from their dominant best, the Demons remained in the
contest all day, eventually succumbing to an incredible
goal from Lalor’s Spencer Christopher.
Daniel Shallard and Simon Buchanan kicked multiple
goals for the Demons and were considered a couple of
the Demons best players, along with Jedd McQueen.
by Christopher Chrysostomou
The Demons will come up against a Thomastown side
showing their premiership credentials. Having not
led at the start of any term, the Bears were able to
outscore Fitzroy Stars four goals to three in the final
term to set up a five-point win in Round 3.
Jacob Osei-Duro was once again the star up forward,
equalling his Round 1 tally of five goals, to have a total
of ten in two games. Osei-Duro was arguably the Bears
best player, along with defender Adrian Lesar and
Adrian Natoli.
Last year the Bears were victorious in the two meetings
between the clubs, winning the matches by 14 and 10
points respectively.
The final match of the week takes place at Sir Douglas
Nicholls Oval, when the Fitzroy Stars play host to
Lalor.
Round 3 saw both teams play in matches ending in
margins of five points. However, for the Stars, they
were on the losing end of the tight tussle, while Lalor
managed to snatch a win from the jaws of defeat.
Against Thomastown, the Stars led for most of the day
and could easily have come away with the win. Clinton
Benjamin had an unlikely chance to win the game
for the Stars after the final siren, however his torpedo
attempt from 60m landed short.
Djaran Whyman again showed his sublime talent,
kicking seven of the Stars 13 goals for the game. Lionel
Proctor and Daniel Francis chipped in with two goals
apiece, to show that the Stars have more then one
avenue to goal, while Max Maynard was also a key
performer in defence.
Coming into Round 4, Lalor would be relieved to end
its winless start to 2016.
The Bloods were good, without being great in their
five-point win over Diamond Creek, suggesting there is
still room for improvement if they are going to return
to the form of last year.
Todd Hughes kicked six goals and Spencer Christopher
kicked three in the win over the Demons. Scott Dowell
was also impressive as a leading half forward.
The last time Fitzroy beat Lalor was Round 14, 2014,
when they came away with a comfortable 60-point
victory at their home fortress.

DIVISION 2
DIAMOND CREEK
Welcome today to the club’s sponsor with the first of
our sponsors days this season.
SENIORS: In another ANZAC clash between Diamond
Creek and Lalor, which last year resulted in a draw, was
just as enthralling this year with Lalor being victors by
five points. It was a tough close match which could
have gone either way with Lalor scoring a goal in the
last two minutes to get the lead.
RESERVES: The reserves had another good 67-point
win over Lalor, which was their third straight win
to start the season. It was a good team effort with
contributions from all over the ground.
UNDER-19: After a disappointing display last week
the team wanted to come out firing. That they did with
some purpose and played four consistent quarters
against Mernda. Ryan Payne and Cameron Dowse
kicked five goals apiece leading a dominant forward
line for the day.
NETBALL: Round 4 was a good one all around for
our netballers this week. Diamond Creek 1 started
slowly but finished strong with a good win over North
THOMASTOWN
Our first home game for the year last week against
Fitzroy Stars and what a fantastic game of football.
SENIORS: In front of a bumper crowd for the Anzac
weekend, there was never more than a goal or two
in the game. In a tense last quarter the lead changed
hands a few times and, to our credit, we wrest the lead
back late in the game to secure the four points. What a
way to open the year in front of our home crowd.
RESERVES: Once again we took our time playing
the type of footy that we know we are capable of.
We kicked up a gear in the second half to run away
convincing winners. Despite the good win, there
are still a number of areas we need to focus on and
Diamond Creek away will prove our biggest test to date.
NETBALL: Here are the netball results from April

Heidelberg, last year’s grand final rivals. The final score
for the game was 61-36, which was another great win.
Diamond Creek 2 were determined to win against their
rivals, Eltham, and it was goal for goal all game with us
getting over the line by one goal 23-22. Diamond Creek
3 played Diamond Creek 4, a game that would see one
of the teams gain their first win for the season. The final
score being 42-16 in favour of Diamond Creek 3, with
the game played in such competitive but fair spirit.
SOCIAL NOTES: Ladies Day is now June 18. Lock it in
your diaries. Tickets will be available online from May 1.

early from the club on Thursday nights or on game
days.
MAJOR SPONSORS: The club thanks our major
sponsors for the 2016 season – Caelli and Nillumbik
Cellars.
starts to the year. Keep up the good work ladies.
SOCIAL NEWS: Saturday May 7 is the 2016
Thomastown Poker Championship. Entry is $50 with
$10-$50 rebuys on the night. Play starts at 7.30pm
sharp. Please see Micko for tickets; TFNC Ladies Lunch
is Saturday May 14th starting at 12 noon. More details
to follow.
DEAN SINCLAIR’S DATING TIPS: This week’s dating
tip is particularly relevant to those that fall into the gym
junkie category, which is half the list. “No matter how
attractive she may be, avoid any woman that appears
able to bench press you!”
AROUND THE LAIR: Hands up who needs a lesson
on how to raise a flag…..guilty your honour. I was
honoured all the same and thanks to all concerned for
allowing me to be a part of the celebrations. Who has
the early award for the worst piece of clothing to be
worn in 2016? Normally an honour reserved for Deano,
this time it’s Sash, with the worst pair of shorts known
to mankind.

FITZROY STARS
This week is obviously a must win game against Lalor.
SENIORS: It was a hard pill to swallow last week with
Thomastown getting us on the buzzer. There were a
lot of emotions after the loss and some truths were
relayed to our players from our very honest coach.
Obviously Thomo will be there or there about at the
end of the season and we can’t afford to have lapses
against quality opposition. The opening quarter was an
even affair with four goals apiece, the centre contests
were absolutely crucial. Thomastown got on top in this
area in the second and posted a lead at the main break.
We fought back with our backline standing up under
incredible pressure and momentum had seemingly
swung our way to go in even at three quarter time.
It was a seesawing last term with Thomastown the
victor by five points in a quality contest. Hayes was
inspirational through the middle, while Jake, Maxy and
Keith held the backs together, with Djars chiming in
with seven majors.
RESERVES: Had a horrid day with Thomo showing us
what a good pre-season can do. Our talent was up with
LALOR
Today we will play Fitzroy Stars who will be smarting
after their narrow loss last week.
THANKS: Thanks to all the Diamond Creek people who
attended our luncheon and to all the supporters for
hanging around after the game.
SENIORS: After the formalities of Anzac Day, we were
treated to a tough and physical game that was close
all day. The cards were dealt our way but what was
pleasing was the endeavour lacking from the previous
games. Goal Kickers: T. Hughes 6, S. Christopher 3,
J. Langborne, S. Dowell, K. Digney; Best Players: S.
Christopher, T. Hughes, A. Velicki, B. Seeley, J. Dowell, S.
Dowell.
RESERVES: The reserves held on until half time until
they were ran over by a superior Diamond Creek team.
An opportunity awaits this week against a Fitzroy Stars
team also without a win so far this season.
AROUND THE TRAPS: I could not believe my eyes
when I saw the umpire escort with his arm around an
umpire during the minute’s silence. I think he gave him
36
THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football League Record
our opponents, but Thomo were more structured and
fitter. They were ahead all day and finally ran out victors
by 44 points. Chrisco never stopped having a crack in the
ruck, with Jye and Mousy running the game out well.
NETBALL: The shining light for the club and showing
our footballers how to get the job done. Five wins
from five starts, absolutely brilliant ladies! Our Section
1 side had a 59-35 victory over Bundoora; Section 2
got over Kilmore 28-18; Section 3 had Watsonia 30-25,
Hurstbridge were no match for our Section 4 side with
a 26-16, win while our Section 5 “babies” had their first
win against Kilmore 31-17. Fantastic effort girls with
Aunty Linda over the moon.
TOOL OF THE WEEK: Time stood still with Jacko
sidestepping everyone to let fly with an amazing goal.
Only issue was it bounced through for a certain goal
when a flying scissor kick from Djars nearly upset the
heroics. It happened to be right in front of the coaches
and crowd which brought a cheeky grin to Djars’ face,
but in contrast Jacko was nearly shattered. Very funny
moment that was not lost on any of the crowd in
ruptures on the sideline.

a bum tap. So does this mean he is mellowing towards
umpires? Bernie has changed his surname to Sheedy
after chewing the great man’s ear for an hour. He told
everyone that Sheeds was writing a chapter about him
in his new book.
THIS WEEK: Today we will play Fitzroy Stars who
will be smarting after their narrow loss last week. If
we bring the same endeavour as last week, we can’t
complain.

DIVISION 2
HURSTBRIDGE
Today we welcome all North Heidelberg players,
committee and supporters to Ben Frilay Oval.
SENIORS: Great win under lights against our rivals
Panton Hill. It’s always a hard fought game on the hill,
and our shots on goal didn’t help. In the end we came
away with a 12-goal win through team work.
RESERVES: 111-point win and some fantastic footy
played by our boys. Running hard, linking up and
unselfish play.
UNDER-19: What can be said when you have a
240-point win? Even the umpires commented about
how well the boys played the game. Could have
showboated and lairised but followed the coach’s
instructions to the end. Well done fellas.
NETBALL: HB1 had huge win over Whittlesea 43-11;
HB2 had a narrow loss to West Preston Lakeside 23-25;
HB3 lost to Fitzroy Stars 26–16. Games are played Friday
nights get along and support our girls.
JUNIORS: Under-18 Girls lost to Epping 13.17.95 –
2.3.15; Under-16s had a huge win over Mill Park 4.1.25
NORTH HEIDELBERG
Big month ahead for the club kicking off with today at
Hurstbridge.
TODAY: Huge game for all three teams which will sort
the men from boys. The Bridges are flying at present so
lets be switched on from the first bounce.
SENIORS: A win against a determined Panton Hill side
who took it right up to us. Was a struggle, however we
got the points. A downside was the injury to Kyl Ewart
in his first senior game back who suffered a seasonending injury. Here’s to a speedy recovery. Best: Gilbo,
Sauce and Jay.
RESERVES: A slow start but powered away to record
a sound victory. The numbers are good and depth is
solid putting pressure on the big boys to perform. Best:
Wrighty, Louis and Brodie.
UNDER-19: Great vibe amongst the group with the
team starting become a more than competitive unit.
With the 1s & 2s having the bye last weekend it was
great to see the support for the boys. Had a solid twogoal win after being challenged against a good Kilmore
side. Best: Marcus (four goals), Brody and Alex.

DIVISION 3 – Preview
BURRA AND DEMONS CLASH FOR TOP SPOT
St Mary’s kept its perfect record intact with a narrow
win over Banyule at R.J. Brockwell Oval in Round 4.
“We didn’t play our best footy today,” a relived Burra
coach Con Borg said. “Banyule was the better side
on the day; but our guys dug deep and got a really
important win.”
Nicholas Daisley registered the final score of the game
– a point – to give his team a two-point win. More
importantly, he excelled on the day and is having a
great season.
The Bears have now lost three games in a row by a
total of seven points, but there were some positives.
Daniel Kelly, in his first game for the club, booted four
goals and was among the best. And 23rd man Ben
Nethercote scored a major.
Kilmore played its second away game for the season
– this time at A.K. Lines Reserve against Watsonia. The
Saints were far too good on the day, leading by 14
points at half time before breaking away for a 64-point
victory.
“We were happy to get a win and move on,” Watsonia
coach Corey McCall said.
Matthew Crompton continued his stellar season for the
Saints and was ably assisted by Jarryd Allan and Levi
Moss.
The Blues were able to somewhat restrict the scoring
of their opponents – but they lacked the ability to take
the ball from defence to produce a score. Marcus Webb
continued his fine start to the season and performed
well for Kilmore.
Mernda won the Les Butterworth Cup and moved
to the top of the ladder with a 149-point win over
Heidelberg West at Heidelberg Park.
Jayden Welch relished his chance at full forward
with a seven-goal haul. In his senior debut, Anthony
Cardamone underlined his talent with a strong
performance. Recruit Ryan Floyd played his best game
for the Hawks.
“I commend Heidelberg West for their spirit and
congratulate them for the way they went about it
and tried their hardest,” Mernda coach Jason Ford
said. “They battled right to the end under difficult
circumstances.”
Facing the prospect of a 0-4 start to the season, South
Morang found something when needed to win the
Anzac Day game at Mill Park Lakes Reserve, beating
by Doug Long
Epping by 14 points. The Lions should have had the game wrapped up
earlier, with their wastefulness in front of goal keeping
the door ajar for the Blues. Epping came hard early in
the final stanza to draw within a goal, but was never
able to get its nose in front.
Lion Kane Maghamez took an absolute hanger in the
final term and will be a contender for mark of the year.
In Round 5 action, Mernda hosts the only other
unbeaten team in St Mary’s at Waterview Reserve.
The winner goes a game clear on top of the ladder
and will be well placed to play finals football. These
teams have not matched up since the Demons’ 2012
premiership season.
In an intriguing match-up, Banyule will be looking
to get back on the winners list with its first trip to J.J.
Clancy Reserve to take on Kilmore.
The Bears will be desperate to arrest their losing streak
and avoid history repeating itself. They lost five in a
row early in their inaugural 2015 season, but appear to
be better placed this time to arrest the slump.
Epping comes off a five-day break to play Watsonia at
A.K. Lines Reserve.
The Blues currently sit in fourth spot on the ladder but
are unlikely to remain there. A win will move them
ahead of the Saints, while a loss would probably see
them drop out of the top four.
This is the first tussle between these teams since the
Blues came from 61 points down in the 2015 first semi
final to win.
South Morang travels to Heidelberg Park to play
Heidelberg West.
The Lions resurrected their season with a home
win over Epping last week and will hope to build
momentum off the back of that victory.
They would be favoured to win over the Hawks and
keep in touch with the top four, despite the five-day
break between games. The last clash at this ground
between the two combatants resulted in a thrilling
two-point win to South Morang in 2015.

DIVISION 3
HEIDELBERG WEST
This week we play South Morang on our deck.
TODAY: We will enter the game as underdogs however
we will take great stock knowing we went within two
points of an enormous upset last season.
THE CLUB: On behalf of the Heidelberg West Football
Club committee would like to take the opportunity
to thank the Mernda Football Club, along with our
supporters who ventured out to Heidelberg Park,
to mark their respects firstly to the Anzacs and also
to young Pat Cronin and our very own legend Les
Butterworth.
SENIORS: Unfortunately Mernda were too strong
and took the Les Butterworth Cup back to Waterview
Reserve with them. The seniors came up against a
much stronger Mernda outfit and we were simply
outplayed from start to finish. Big Floydy, Offer and
little Trent tried hard all day. Goal Kickers: T. O’Rourke 2,
J. Smith Thompson 2, D. Offer; Best Players: R. Floyd, L.
Pender, D. Offer, B. Moore, J. Shirreff, J. Marris.
RESERVES: The reserves, coming off a confidence
SOUTH MORANG
It was an honour to host the Anzac Day clash against
Epping on Monday.
LAST WEEK: We had a fantastic crowd and three great
wins as well so it was one of the better days we have
had in recent memory. The day started with a good win
by the under-19s, then the reserves took on Epping
who beat us in the preliminary final last year and we
showed that we are a much improved team since we
last meet.
SENIORS: Before the senior game we had the
traditional RSL speeches, followed by the Last Post and
with all players from both sides on the ground it was a
fantastic feeling for all as the national anthem was sung
by Jasmine Hallet. The seniors had a lead throughout the
day and, but for bad kicking could have had the game
wrapped up at three-quarter time. In the end we came
through with Mitch Hicks winning the best on ground
award and the team getting our first win of the year
THIS WEEK: In the seniors we take on Heidelberg West
and must ensure we do not get complacent, as in the
last two years they have come very close to beating us

continue our unbeaten run and consolidate our grip on
top spot. The under-19s play at Diamond Creek today
and will be looking to get a spot in the top four as well.

11:00. Get there to support the girls.
SOCIAL: Ladies Day followed by a DJ is our next

DIVISION 3
KILMORE
We move forward to our next game as we host Banyule.
SENIORS: Round 4 saw our boys travel to Watsonia.
Unfortunately the build up wasn’t ideal, with five
forced changes to the side that defeated Heidelberg
West. The boys brought in confidence to this game but
the second half unfortunately belonged to Watsonia,
kicking 9.12 to 2.4 to set up a 64 -point win. The
backline must be given credit for an unbelievable
game, where they stood firm and were our major
winners in a tough game. Special mention to Jack
Maher who debuted.
UNDER-19: Went into the game against North
Heidelberg full of confidence after a fantastic win
the week before, but unfortunately our first half was
disappointing. If it wasn’t for the hard work of Daniel
Mathews, Trent Bonnici, Luke Waymouth and Luke
Galina we could have been in more trouble. Our third
quarter was a lot better and we were able to play some
very exciting football, which allowed us to kick a few
goals and get back into the game. Brandon Austin and
Dylan Stone worked hard in the last quarter but the
BANYULE
All three teams are on the road with a trip to Kilmore.
SENIORS: We couldn’t have got off to a better start
with debutant Dan Kelly slotting home the first two
goals in his first game in a Banyule jumper. The boys
really got around him, certainly providing the best
possible welcome to the footy club. To counteract our
hot start, St Mary’s really turned the heat up with their
pressure and made it very difficult for our boys to use
the footy cleanly. Despite some scintillating patches
of play, both sides turned it over at crucial times,
however St Mary’s were better at making the most of
their opportunities in front of goal. Devon McDonald
provided a great target up forward, providing repeat
leads, a quality marking option and forward 50
pressure. Dan Kelly continued his red hot start with
some quality use through the midfield, Dave Stewart
worked tirelessly off half back and Nathan Elsworthy
provided both defensive pressure and some run from
the backline. With the third tough loss in as many
weeks by the collective total of seven points, this was
another tough loss for the boys to cop. The positive
46

damage had been done in the first half of the game.
NETBALL: Our A-grade girls had their first loss to the
Fitzroy Stars. Both teams were goal for goal in the first
half. Fitzroy made their run late in the third quarter
and with a strong defence we struggled. Standouts
for the game were Laura Corrick, Jesse Knights and
Ebony Kinnear. B-grade came up against a strong
Montmorency. We came out strong in the first quarter,
but struggled to keep up in the fast paced game. Hannah
Lane played a great game, while Melanie Smith and Tayla
Jackson were also standouts. C-grade took on Fitzroy
Stars 5. A nervous start by both teams saw the ball being
turned over a lot before goals were scored. The end of
the first quarter saw Kilmore down by three. The nerves
seem to have gone by the second quarter and both
teams seemed to settle into the game. The third quarter
started evenly with both teams scoring quickly, however
in the second half of the third quarter Fitzroy got a run of
goals which we weren’t able to peg back.
SOCIAL: April 30 is Dress Up Night at the Kilmore club
rooms. The theme is Famous Couples and Groups.
is the boys are improving each week and their effort
cannot be questioned. We just need to keep learning
from these tough defeats and hopefully the taste
of victory is around the corner. Goals: D. Kelly 4, D.
McDonald 3, M. Italia 2, B. Nethercote, J. Hooper; Best:
D. Kelly, N. Elsworthy, R. Keys, D. Stewart, D. McDonald,
L. French.
RESERVES: The difference between the two sides
is that St Mary’s turned up to win a game and were
switched on from the first bounce. Banyule only turned
up to play a game of football. St Mary’s dominated
the first half with Banyule third to the ball and lacking
composure with the ball. Banyule had only about six
players following team plans and putting their bodies in
first. The second half was a great turn around with more
Banyule players wanting the ball. Just lapses from a few
discipline rules, like trying to take big marks in packs
instead of punching the ball, allowed four goals through
for St Mary’s. Hopefully a big learning curve for Banyule
on how to turn up to play football and how to prepare
for a week’s game. Goals: M. Ritchie 2, M. Smith 2, J.
Luttrell, M. Borg, D. Camilleri, T. Cowey; Best: M. Borg, M.
Smith, R. Lester, S. Mathieson, M. Ritchie, T. Cowey.

DIVISION 3
MERNDA
Two more good wins but I’m not entirely sure how
much I can read into those. We’ll find out today against
a resurgent St Mary’s outfit.
SENIORS: Could have won by more, having kicked
9.10 in the last quarter, plus we were outplayed in the
third by Heidelberg West who played their best football
for the year in stages. Having said that, we did what
we needed to. Welchy had a good day out and kicked
seven, Tarry kicked five and that means we now have
three blokes who lead our goalkicking with 10. We’re on
top of the ladder for the first time in four years.
RESERVES: Another good win. The last quarter was
the one which helped us, kicking 14 goals. Marto kicked
a bag of nine, Arcus and Mara got a lot of the footy
and we had a lot of contributors across the board. Big
T kicked four, Josh Geth kicked three in his first game
for the club and his brother had a bit of the ball too.
Good win, long awaited Grand Final rematch from 2012
coming up today.
UNDER-19: Watched a half and we were poor,
and Stevie said the second half wasn’t much better.
ST MARY’S
As early as it is in the season, every footballer, netballer
and supporter of this club, should feel that we can
match it with anyone where up against.
THE CLUB: Whilst it’s only the beginning, it’s a
promising start that we can build on if we continue
to work, not cut corners and if anything, increase
standards and commitment.
MERCHANDISE AND MEMBERSHIP: Supporters
are great. Members are vital. Get your $50 social
membership and buy club merchandise to genuinely
show that you’re part of St Mary’s and helping us get to
where we need to be. A successful, respected club.
FOOTBALL: Banyule anywhere is not easy, but to get
the points away from home in the seniors and reserves
is a good accomplishment. An undermanned 19s just
went down which spoilt the day, but gave us hope for
what lies ahead. Dillan Ronalds showed why we wanted
him back so badly in the black, white and teal. The
president’s son nailed five sausages for the reserves and
Adam De Girolamo was a star for the 19s.
48
THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football League Record
Diamond Creek were far too good for us. Hopefully we
learn from that and put in a big performance this week.
NETBALL: Continue to impress on the courts, with
two more wins as grading wrapped up. Mernda 1 beat
Thomastown in a thriller, 27-25, while Mernda 2 had a
good win against South Morang, 41-27. Unfortunately,
Mernda 3 was unable to get over the top of a strong
North Heidelberg.
VALE: I wrote last week’s piece prior to the tragic
passing of Patrick Cronin and I’d like to send
condolences to Lower Plenty FC Patty, as well as Tony
Barden who coached Branners in the FIDA side. What
beautiful, poetic justice the Bears were able to get up
last Saturday for both of them.
THIS WEEK: The netballers begin their season proper
after their grading games, which have produced some
excellent results so far. On Saturday there are some
cracking games on the horizon against a St Mary’s side
that have been super impressive this season, with the
seniors also unbeaten at this early stage. Really looking
forward to this one!
NETBALL: The Burra girls came out firing for the last
grading games. The firsts had their fourth win of the
season, with a 10-goal victory over Ivanhoe. Whilst
the twos had a bye, the third team did us proud with a
competitive game against Greensborough, just missing

WATSONIA
Ladies Day today and we’ll be hosting last year’s grand
finalists, Epping.
LAST WEEK: Hosted Kilmore at Watsonia for the
first Lizard Cup. Unfortunately our main man, Rick
Kimberley, was unavailable for the game and so we
wait for the next match up between the two sides.
SENIORS: The boys were keen to make amends for
the week before and had some handy inclusions into
the line up. The entire match was an extremely scrappy
(not Diesel) affair that saw a few of the boys end up
with scorecards that resembled Levi Casboult’s. Browny
was the main culprit, wearing a new pair of wheels
that Crawf clearly picked up when buying Cursed
Frogurt, kicking 0.6... Yes, 0.6. Corey blasted the boys at
half time, which nearly ruined the atmosphere in the
half time Trainer’s Room meeting... Nearly. The boys
responded and played much better football in the
second half, recording our third win for the year.
RESERVES: Similar tale to the seniors, very poor
kicking throughout the day. T-Mac with 2.5, Trossy
EPPING
After an ANZAC Day we best forget and with a five-day
break we head off to meet Watsonia in what could be
seen as a season defining match!
SENIORS: With a five-day turnaround we don’t have
time to dwell on what could have been, our focus is
squarely on Watsonia today. Goal Kickers: A. Willitts 2,
D. Moore 2, C. Chilcott 2, D. Walker, J. Stavely, J. Wilkins,
S. Wood; Best Players: D. Walker, S. Wood, J. Stavely, T.
Sullivan, P. McMahon, T. Hughes.
RESERVES: We didn’t come to play. We only played
one quarter which isn’t good enough against a good
side. Alec, Mitch and Kyle tried hard all day. Today we
come up against Watsonia. Hopefully we can regroup,
play a good brand of footy and come away with the
four points. Goal Kickers: D. Cutrupi 2, T. Emmins 2, J.
Cugnetto 2, A. Buchan, B. Laing, J. Cullen; Best Players:
K. Turnbull, B. Warren, A. Buchan, M. Henwood, M.
Franklin, D. Cutrupi.
UNDER-19: It was a privilege to play on such a great
day, although we didn’t get the points. The game
showed that we are a little bit off the standard that we

with 2.5 Damo with 1.2. Clarke, L and Ocean provided
a target out of the forward line and the desperation
of the defenders was pleasing, as well as the spread of
goal kickers. Clarke, A, Classen and Sam provided great
movement from the midfield all day, sharing the footy
around and getting the ball to those players in space.
Was great to enjoy our first win of the season, though
few enjoyed it more than Slug. Hopefully we can
continue to build on the positives from last week as we
face Epping today.

DIAMOND CREEK SHOOTS TO TOP
by Danielle Tedford
ST MARY’S SHOW ITS FINALS CREDENTIALS
by Danielle Tedford
Diamond Creek broke North Heidelberg’s undefeated start
St Mary’s pulled off a stellar win against newly-entered
With a defensive start to the game, both sides displayed
calculated and strong on court tactics as they went into
the first break locked at 12 goals apiece.
At the start of the second quarter Diamond Creek centre
Bronwyn Taylor took control of the game, setting the quick
pace of the game. Her speed was remarkable, as was her
passing ability. Taylor managed to leap what appeared to
be double her height and take control of the ball, passing
court length balls. North Heidelberg’s first-half centre, Kate
Butler was one of her side’s best, transitioning the ball
cleanly down the court towards her shooters.
But Diamond Creek managed to turn the game around
completely, gathering a 15-goal lead running into half time.
As the pressure heated up both sides displayed bold
defensive work, but struggled with their obstructions,
leading to a number of penalties being handed out in the
third quarter. North Heidelberg’s GA Chloe Meulenmeester
displayed advanced shooting technique in the third
quarter, scoring nine of her side’s 10 goals.
While Diamond Creek GK Verhonda Smith was also able
to gain advantage in the third term, sweeping up multiple
turnovers with her swift intercepting.
Shauna Ross, GD for North Heidelberg, worked hard to
attain interceptions, displaying good agility, while fluently
pushing the ball towards the attacking line.
Eloise Whitcroft demonstrated precision shooting in
the final quarter, putting through 14 as Diamond Creek
stretched its lead.
Diamond Creek coach Kristie Gannon said her team put in
a positive performance after a slow start.
“Although we had a shaky start we pulled together nicely.
Our flow down the court transitioned quite well and our
defence was awesome,” she said.
“Coming into next week we will be looking to work on our
decision making in terms of passes.”
Named as her side’s player of the week, Diamond Creek GS
Kelly Sadowy said she was “looking forward to more wins
and playing some competitive games this season”.
North Heidelberg’s Shauna Ross said her side performed
admirably, despite going down in the end.
“Diamond Creek is an impressive side. We had a few
outs tonight and no bench, which made it tough having
no fresh legs, so it’s disappointing but we played well
considering,” Ross said.
The 32-22 win saw the Burra move one-game clear atop
the ladder following four matches.
Remaining undefeated after four rounds, St Mary’s has
made it its ambition to go one step better after last year’s
disappointing grand final loss.
St Mary’s was able to jump start the match with high
intensity, which was soon matched by their young
competitors, Ivanhoe.
Ivanhoe’s GS Maddison Seeley was able to keep her side
within touching distance early, accurately scoring six of the
team’s opening seven goals.
After an equal first term, St Mary’s was quick to step up
its game in the second quarter. Demonstrating quick feet
and fast passes St Mary’s was able to take the lead into half
time.
St Mary’s GD Jess Beaton was a standout player, with her
agility ensuring she was always well positioned to receive
the ball, as well as allowing her to force turnovers for her
team.
St Mary’s coach Jake Dambrauskas was pleased with his
side’s defensive efforts in the win.
“We really stepped up defensively after the first quarter,
and we saw our defensive combinations work well at
picking off intercepts,” he said. “(The girls) ‘worked really
well together tonight.”
Ivanhoe coach Julie Hibbert said her team would learn for
the defeat and continue to improve.
“We’re a rather new side, recently coming up a division and
although we need to work on our intensity I’m happy with
the way the girls performed,” Hibbert said.
Ivanhoe’s centre Ella Shannon played a good tactical
game and was able read the flow of the match well, often
intercepting the ball and displaying strong passes.

PASTA NIGHTS & AFTER MATCHES!
Our 2016 Pasta Night Dinners held on Thursday Nights
at Preston City Oval for our U/18 boys and staff, have
become a huge success. A big thank you goes out
to our parents who have co-ordinated the night.
The set-up of the tables (salads, bread and drinks) is
remarkable and all present have been extremely spoilt.
The fantastic support of our parents continued against
Queensland where our after match was filled with food
and drinks for both teams and parents to enjoy after a
great contest. Once again, many thanks goes out to our
terrific parents for coordinating the day.
SPONSORS
The Knights would like to thank Technika, a leading
producer of high quality kitchen and laundry
appliances, for their sixth year as Major Sponsor of
the club. We thank them for their generous ongoing
support of the talent pathway in the Northern
Metropolitan Region.

JUNIOR Review
A look back at the weekend’s junior results as teams
took to the field for Round 3 of the 2016 Northern
Football League junior season.
The Under-18 Girls competition saw South Morang
erase an 11-point three-quarter time deficit to storm
home in the final term and win by three points over
Montmorency. The Lions were able to put through
three goals to one in the final term at Montmorency
Park to get their second win in a row. It was the closest
match for the round in the Under-18 girls competition,
with Darebin, Greensborough and Epping all recording
wins in excess of 80 points.
In the Under-17 competition, Diamond Creek came
from behind after a slow first term to defeat Whittlesea
by 12 points at Coventry Oval. After scoring just three
behinds in the opening term and trailing by 19 points
at quarter-time, the Creekers reduced the margin to
just two points at the major break, before running
away with the match after half time. Research recorded
its first win of the season with a gripping six-point
win over Yarrambat. Close throughout the day, the
Searchers were able to keep their noses in front for
the majority of the match to seal a close win. Mill Park,
Wallan and Epping were the other winners for the
round.
The Under-16 Blue competition saw a thriller played
out at Redleap Reserve, with West Preston-Lakeside
coming from behind to produce a nine-point victory.
Trailing by two points at three-quarter time, the
Roosters were able to put through five goals to three
in the final term to get their first win of the season.
That was the closest margin for the competition, with
Greensborough, Laurimar Black and Montmorency also
recording Round 3 wins.
Eltham held off a second-half surge from South
Morang in the Under-16 Red competition to win by
five points at Mill Park Lakes Reserve. Leading by 27
points at half-time, the Lions were able to kick three
unanswered goals in the third term to cut the margin
to five points, although they were inaccurate in also
booting five behinds. That inaccuracy would cost them
as the Panthers held on to win despite registering five
less scoring shots. Hurstbridge had a big win over Mill
Park at Redleap Reserve, while Wallan were the other
winners for the round, accounting for Laurimar Teal by
31 points.
West Preston-Lakeside held on in a thriller at J.E Moore
Park in the Under-16 Girls competition, winning by six
points against Research. Trailing by 17 points at three-
by Ben Pascuzzi
quarter time, the Searchers were able to kick three
goals to one in the final term but it wasn’t enough
as a strong first three quarters from the Roosters
was enough to set up the win. Laurimar and Eltham
also played out a thriller, with the Power holding off
the Panthers to win by four points. Montmorency,
Diamond Creek Womens and Greensborough all
recorded more convincing Round 3 wins.
South Morang kept on its winning way in the
Under-15 Blue competition, beating Montmorency
at W.A Smith Reserve to keep its unbeaten start
to the season going. Whittlesea also recorded a
big win, accounting for Mill Park at the Whittlesea
Showgrounds. Mernda was the other winner for the
round, recording a comfortable away victory over
Eltham.
The Under 15 Red competition saw Greensborough
put in a powerful performance against South Morang
at Mill Park Lakes Reserve. Elsewhere, Diamond Creek
was too good for Research, Epping recorded a home
win over Whittlesea, Wallan took the points in its home
clash against Northcote, while West Preston-Lakeside
won on the road at Yarrambat.
The grading games conclude this weekend. Good luck
to all sides in action in Round 4 and for the season
ahead.
