EDITORIAL
Football is well and truly alive
in the NFL.
Healthy and strong
competitions have been
witnessed within all three
NFL senior divisions. Every week there seems
to be an upset result that creates more and
more interest in who will finish where on the
ladder and just when a team seems to be
settled towards the top of the ladder, they
lose a game to keep them well within reach
for the rest of the teams
The back half of the season for each division
promises to be very exciting. There are teams
outside of the top four, or five in the case of
first division, who have a very good chance
of making the finals. Many of these teams
will player each other at least once before the
finals and no doubt this will shape who will
be successful to make the finals.
Every week there are many great games
to choose from to attend and watch some
great football in a quality environment. This
weekend is no different and I look forward
to seeing how everyone fares and who will
cause the biggest upset this week.
Junior football is rapidly coming to the end of
the home and away season, despite a bye this
weekend over the school holiday period. With
only three home and away rounds matches
to go, I urge everyone to remember that it is
about the kids and not the adults.
Let’s keep our emotions in check and make
sure that we continue to create a positive
environment for the kids to enjoy their
football. I wish all teams who are striving
to make the finals, good luck, but most
importantly, HAVE FUN.
Netball is also heading to the pointy end
of the season and it is timely to remind all
players and club officials of that the NFL will
not tolerate anyone who abuses umpires,
and if they do, they could find themselves in
the tribunal and be held to account for their
behaviour.
So far the season has been fantastic, let’s
keep it this way as we head towards the
finals.
Enjoy your weekend of NFL
football and NNL netball.

EAGLES SHOWING THEY BELONG
by Dan Campbell
It had been 700 days since Whittlesea had last tasted
victory in Division 1.
From Round 13, 2014, when the Eagles cruised to a
37-point win over West Preston-Lakeside on July 19,
until Round 9, 2016 when the club broke its duck
against Northcote Park on June 18. It had been a long
time between drinks for the Eagles.
Some 100 weeks later, and not only has Whittlesea
broken its Division 1 hoodoo, but it has recorded backto-back victories against much-fancied opponents,
defeating finals-aspirant Bundoora by 28 points last
weekend.
Whittlesea senior coach James Atkins has seen the trials
and tribulations of his group this season, but believes
the internal belief within the club never wavered.
“We always knew we could compete and win games of
footy,” Atkins told The Northerner.
“I don’t think the belief has never not been there,
throughout the whole year.
“We always believed that we could win games of footy,
it was just about getting the result. We’d beaten a lot of
teams in quarters – we just had to play four quarters to
get the result.
“Sticking to the game-plan is paying dividends at the
moment.”
Sitting 0-8, anchored to the bottom of the Division 1
ladder after two-point losses to West Preston-Lakeside
in Round 1 and Bundoora in Round 5 had Atkins asking
questions.
On top of two single-figure losses to quality opposition,
Whittlesea had been in winning positions in a number
of matches.
It gave the still undefeated ladder-leader Heidelberg
a scare, trailing by 11 points at three-quarter-time in
Round 2, held a five-point lead over Lower Plenty at
three-quarter time in Round 3 and a three-point lead
over Greensborough at the final change in Round 6.
“You could imagine what it would’ve been like,” Atkins
said. “We knew that we weren’t that far off but when
you’re zip and eight and you start questioning what
you’re doing.
“You could tell that we weren’t far away and we knew
that if we had a four-quarter effort we were going to
4
THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football League Record
get the results.
“We’ve just got to do it (consistently) throughout a
whole season and it’s a lot of hard work to stay up.”
Atkins’ message to his side after being so close, yet so
far to breaking its duck a number of times was simple –
not if, but when.
Despite recording heavy losses to reigning premier
Macleod in Round 7 (96 points) and Montmorency
in Round 8 (44 points), the next two weeks’ winning
results would be in complete contrast, but the positive
attitude would remain the same.
“The two weeks before we won our last two games we
had our poorest two weeks of the year,” Atkins said.
“We just needed to keep that positive attitude (around
the club) and let everyone know that we’re not far
away.”
Former Brisbane and Western Bulldogs player Justin
Sherman, who played 138 AFL games from 2005-2012,
has had an immediate impact this season in a playingassistant coaching role, according to Atkins.
“His leadership’s been fantastic,” he said. “He’s a playing
assistant coach, so his leadership there’s very good and
he’s very good with the young guys.
“He helps out the young blokes a lot and talks about
what he’s done and what he’s achieved, and what they
need to do to reach those levels and professionalism.
“He’s a good people person and spends a lot of time
with individuals. His football over the last couple of
weeks has been fantastic as well,” Atkins said.
Whittlesea travels to Eltham Central Park this week
where it takes on the seventh-placed Panthers.
The sides last met in Round 4 with Eltham prevailing
by 19 points. Atkins believes his side’s confidence from
the last fortnight will hold it in good stead in the return
bout this weekend.
“We’re just taking it one week at a time, we just need
to keep making sure we keep putting our best foot
forward. If we play four quarters of footy, the results will
look after themselves,” he said.
“We think we’re a shot and so we should – we’re playing
some good footy at the moment.
“That winning feeling is a magical thing. It’s a lot easier
to get to footy training and train and be up and about
after a couple of wins and I’d assume that’s going to be
the same this week.”

TIGERS MOVE FOUR GAMES CLEAR
by Jarryd Barca
Heidelberg continued its undefeated season with
a comfortable 30-point win over Greensborough at
Warringal Park in Round 10 of Meadows Greyhounds
Division 1.
The 12.13 (85) to 7.13 (55) scalp sits the Tigers four wins
and percentage ahead of their closest rivals on the
ladder, heading into the final eight rounds of the home
and away season.
The Boro’s second-straight defeat saw them move to
6-4 and slip to third place on the ladder, percentage
behind second-placed Macleod.
Adam Symes starred up forward for Heidelberg,
booting a game-high four goals and marking
everything that came his way. Ruckman Sam Gilmore
also stretched the Boro defence, kicking three goals as
the only other multiple goal kicker on the ground.
Finals-like intensity was prominent from the get-go and
the contested area of the game was crucial for both sides.
It was Heidelberg who got the better of its opponent in
that aspect, thanks largely to James Magner.
Both teams were able to spread from the clearances
well and had the intention of burning the opposition
with quick ball movement, but turnovers from both
sides gave the game a see-sawing effect.
Paul Bower and Josh Gribben held their own in defence
for the Tigers, as Luke Hodgkin and Charles Gaylard
dominated through the centre of the ground with
countless forward-50 entries.
Speed and class on the outside is what got the job
done for the Tigers, who took the game on through the
middle of the ground whenever an opportunity arose.
Josh Griffiths was the Boro’s best player, breaking lines
and taking the game on with every opportunity he
got. Nick Carnell, Chris Clark and Ricky Mullins were all
damaging at times throughout the game and gave the
Boro drive through the midfield.
After plenty of early stoppages, it was Gaylard who
opened the game up with a long kick forward landing in
the hands of Gilmore, who stood tall and marked over the
top of Daniel McLinden to slot the first goal of the game.
A counter-attacking goal through Clark evened things
up for the Boro, before Gilmore got on the end of
another Gaylard ball forward to kick his second goal.
Jarrod Hodgkin and Nick Miller were able to extend
the Tigers’ margin further after dominating the middle
stages of the opening term.
However, Greensborough ran out the quarter the
hardest and two late goals through Carnell and Josh
Callaway brought the the margin back to just seven
points at quarter time.
Heidelberg lifted its intensity in the second term and it
was all about Adam Symes, who managed to kick all of
his four goals in the quarter.
Other than Symes capitalising on his opportunities, the
Tigers missed many shots on goal and could have had
the game all but over.
The Boro stayed in the contest with goals to Griffiths
and Jacob Ireland, trailing the Tigers by 29 points at the
main break.
With the third quarter came a free-flowing fast game of
footy, but both sides were unable to punish the other
with scoreboard pressure.
Though Greensborough had the better of the quarter,
turnovers were the only thing keeping them from possibly
overrunning the Tigers. The Boro kicked four behinds for
the quarter – following an early goal to Gilmore.
Greensborough came out in the final quarter with every
intent of winning the game despite trailing by 36 points
at the last change of ends, and was getting on top in
many key aspects.
The first five scoring shots for the Boro were all behinds
however, and a quick rebound goal through Gaylard
ended the visitor’s chances of a comeback.
The Tigers managed to hold off their visitors thereafter
to charge to their 10th consecutive victory.
FINAL SCORE:
Heidelberg 12.13 (85) def Greensborough 7.13 (55)

BRIDGES HOLD OFF BULLDOGS’ CHARGE
by Jarrad Gardner
Hurstbridge extended its unbeaten run to nine games
with a dramatic nine-point win over North Heidelberg
at Ben Frilay Oval in Round 11.
Goalless and trailing by 50 points at half time, the
Bulldogs fought their way back into the match but fell
agonisingly short of a memorable comeback, as the
Bridges held on for a 13.16 (94) to 11.19 (85) win.
The result moved Hurstbridge three wins and
percentage clear in first place on the Division 2 ladder,
with the club looking destined to take out the minor
premiership at the end of the home and away season.
Robert Graham was named best afield for the Bridges,
while the likes of Brayden Shaw, Jarrod Tilley and Tyron
Loader all played influential roles.
Aron Burns was the star up forward, kicking four
majors, while Chris Burton and Tom Simpson both
slotted three.
For the Bulldogs, Shane Harvey kicked four, including
three crucial last-quarter goals, while Kyle Green and
Marc Lonergan both kicked two.
Pasquale Saccuzzo was named best for the visitors for
his lockdown job on Tom Simpson after quarter time,
with the Bridges’ young gun booting all his three goals
in the opening half.
Michael Florance, Daniel Bramich and Josh Iezzi were all
influential in the Bulldogs’ second half fight back.
Hurstbridge was able to come out of the blocks fast,
kicking the first goal through Dale Eames before Chris
Burton was able to get on the board.
Inaccurate kicking meant the margin didn’t reflect the
Bridges’ early dominance, however two goals each to
Burns and Simpson saw the home side race out to a
40-point quarter time lead.
North Heidelberg sent Saccuzzo to Simpson early in the
second term after he kicked his third major following
the restart of play.
An inaccurate quarter from both sides saw a combined
2.10 kicked as the Bridges went 50 points ahead at the
main break, with the Bulldogs contained to just eight
behinds in the first half.
Hurstbridge had the first two shots at goal in the
third term but couldn’t convert either, before North
Heidelberg went down the other end and kicked its first
through Zac Gleeson.
The Bulldogs were able to kick the next three goals
to reduce to margin to 27 points midway through the
quarter.
However, three goals to Hurstbridge, including Burns’
third, saw the margin blow back out to 44 points,
before a late goal to Lonergan gave the Bulldogs a
glimmer of hope heading into the final term.
Andre Habchi converted early in the last quarter
for North Heidelberg as the away side continued its
momentum early.
A 50-metre penalty handed Green his first goal, before
Harvey kicked two more in the next three minutes to
move the Bulldogs within three points of the lead.
Hurstbridge was able to wrestle back the advantage
with goals to Burton and Burns before Green kicked his
second for the Bulldogs to give them some hope late.
As the siren went the Hurstbridge players and faithful
alike breathed a sigh of relief.
Coach Rob Dyson was impressed with his side’s first half
but admitted they were “outworked” late in the match.
“(North Heidelberg) lifted their intensity and they
worked a lot harder than they did in the first half,”
Dyson said.
FINAL SCORE:
Hurstbridge 13.16 (94) def North Heidelberg 11.19 (85)

BURRA SWOOP INTO TOP TWO
by Michael Thompson
St Mary’s moved into the top two of Heidelberg Golf
Club Division 3 after a six-goal to two last quarter
propelled the Burra to an 18-point win over Mernda in
Round 11.
Trailing by nine points at the last change, the Burra’s
six-goal burst included four goals in the first seven
minutes of the final quarter, ensuring they were able to
move past the Demons on the ladder with a 14.12 (96)
to 11.12 (78) win.
It was Mernda who appeared on top early, and
converted the opening goal in the first two minutes
through Josh Delaney. It was a poignant return from
Delaney, who seriously injured his neck on the previous
occasion the Demons visited Whatmough Park.
The goal stung the Burra into action and Nick Daisley,
who was one of their best throughout the day, snapped
through a goal to put them on the board.
Toby O’Meara then started to assert himself into the
game. In his first St Mary’s game, O’Meara was able to
kick two goals in the opening quarter, allowing the
Burra to lead by five points at the opening change.
The second quarter was an arm-wrestle – the Burra
looked like clearing away at stages, with the likes
of Daniel Dober and Jake Johnston getting on the
scoreboard, while Dillan Ronalds was dominant around
the clinches.
Mernda was able to respond, with Les Adams leading
from the front. Adams kicked one of the goals of the
day when he tackled a St Mary’s player, picked up
his own crumb and delivered a long goal from 55m,
allowing the Demons to stay in the game.
St Mary’s led by 11 points at half time, but it was the
Demons who made their move in the third quarter,
kicking 4.6 to the Burra’s 1.4.
Luke Drakes played his best game of the season and
starred in the third quarter, kicking two goals and
taking some strong marks. Bill Samie was also able to
kick a classy goal right on the pocket – the young gun
impressing yet again, kicking three goals.
With the game on the line, St Mary’s coach Con Borg
delivered a three-quarter time spray which yielded
immediate dividends.
The Burra kicked four goals in the opening seven minutes
of the final quarter – Myles Guldon kicking two important
goals with the game on the line, while Ronalds, who
shifted forward, was also able to hit the scoreboard and
was busy in every St Mary’s foray forward.
Mernda, on the other hand, simply could not get any
coherency or run into its game throughout the last
quarter.
Finally, O’Meara put the icing on the cake with a great
snap goal, putting the Burra four goals clear and
securing an important win in the context of their season.
Samie kicked his third right on the siren, but it was
merely a consolation goal – the Demons missing a big
chance to go two games clear of the pack in second.
Along with Ronalds and Daisley, who were instrumental
in midfield, St Mary’s winners included Jarrod Bunker
off half-back, Dober and Raygen Tate.
O’Meara kicked four goals, beating both Christian
Cawsey and Ian Fulton, while Guldon, Johnston and
Dober kicked two goals each.
Mernda’s last quarter was disappointing given the
context of what a win would have brought for its top
two chances.
Adams led from the front superbly, while David
Hutchinson, despite going goalless, was impressive
playing a variety of roles. Delaney also played well and
17-year-old Anthony Cardamone was again busy in the
coalface.
FINAL SCORE:
St Mary’s 14.12 (96) def Mernda 11.12 (78)

NFL GIRLS GALLANT IN DEFEAT
Northern Football League under-15 girls coach David
Craig said the representative side should be extremely
proud of its efforts at the 2016 AFL Victoria Metro Junior
Championships.
The NFL’s under-15 girls were gallant in their grand final
defeat on Saturday, going down 11.8 (74) to 4.4 (28) to
a strong Yarra Junior Football League outfit at Walker
Park.
The 46-point defeat was a marked improvement after
succumbing to a 70-point loss in their previous match
against the YJFL in Round 3 of the Championships.
Craig said all players were to be commended for their
performances in the grand final and throughout the
round robin series.
“They should all be proud. The way they handled
themselves on Saturday and the improvement they
showed was great to see,” Craig said.
“We sat down after the previous loss to Yarra and
worked on changing a few things. The girls played to
the plan and were a lot harder and fiercer at the ball
than in the previous loss.
“In the grand final we lost each quarter by only one or
two goals, which was a marked improvement.
“After the match even the Yarra coach commended our
girls on the improvement they’d shown and their real
team effort.”
Trailing by 21 points at quarter time, the NFL took the
game right up to the YJFL in the second term.
Our girls kept their more fancied opponent to just one
goal in the second quarter, with the game still in the
balance at half time.
YJFL marginally got on top in the second half, however
the NFL girls never gave in and made sure their
opponent had to work hard for their win.
Craig said every girl in the NFL squad contributed
throughout the Championships and named Grace
Dicker, Maeve Chaplin and Ciara Fitzgerald as three of
the more consistent players throughout the campaign.
Kayley Reid was adjudged the NFL’s best player in the
grand final, booting two of her team’s four goals.
Craig said Reid had shown great talent throughout all
four matches at the Championships.
“Kayley came along leaps and bounds and she is only
one of the younger players in the team.
“She was our best on Saturday and really led the way.”
The Northern Football League congratulates all players
and coaches on their efforts throughout the 2016 AFL
Victoria Metro Junior Championships.
The league also thanks all parents and volunteers
for their support of the team throughout the

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 - Preview
THE BACK STRAIGHT
Other than Heidelberg – who looks assured first place
on the ladder – all remaining spots in the top five
are up for grabs as the race for a place in the finals
intensifies heading into July.
Whittlesea has enjoyed a mid-season resurgence
following the Queen’s Birthday long weekend and
heads to Eltham this week with a sense of belonging
in the top flight.
The Eagles led from start to finish to record their
maiden victory against Bundoora. The home side
contained the Bulls to just one first-half goal, before
easing to a 28-point triumph. Northern Knights
product Clancy Bland led the way, with strong support
from Jai Robinson and Chris Horman. With a one-game
and percentage gap over Lower Plenty, a third-straight
win would go a long way to sealing the Eagles’ place in
Division 1.
Eltham missed an opportunity to push inside the
top five following last week’s 54-point defeat to
Northcote Park. The Panthers slipped to seventh on
the ladder, and while equal on points with fifth-placed
Montmorency, their poor percentage puts them
behind the pack. Matthew Evans booted three goals
last week, while Bailey Taglieri continued his good
form.
The second of this season’s grand final rematches takes
place when second-placed Macleod hosts third-placed
Greensborough at De Winton Park. It is a crucial
match as both sides look to secure a top-three finish.
Without a host of key players, Macleod’s depth was
put to the test in last week’s 45-point win over Lower
Plenty. A close game throughout, Macleod broke
clear with five unanswered goals in the final quarter.
Matthew Clark’s rebirth as a forward continued,
booting eight goals, while Lucas Hobbs featured in the
Roos’ best for the fifth consecutive match.
For the second time this season Greensborough
heads into the grand final rematch on the back of
consecutive losses, following last week’s 30-point
defeat at Heidelberg. Despite the return of Matthew
Hyde, Lachlan McQuilken, Tristan Stead and Josh
Callaway, Greensborough trailed all day at Warringal
Park. The Boro were restricted to seven majors and
haven’t reached triple figures since Round 1.
Bundoora has slipped to fourth spot following
consecutive defeats and now faces Heidelberg at
Yulong Reserve.
by Samuel Zito
The Bulls have been well beaten in their past two starts
and will hope for a massive form reversal this week. A
loss could see Phil Plunkett’s side slip outside the top
five for the first time since Round 1. Bundoora was
denied any quick ball movement in last week’s upset
loss at Whittlesea. Brent Marshall shook off injury to try
to inspire his teammates.
An 11th-straight win would give Heidelberg a
competition clean sweep, having beaten all other
Division 1 rivals over the opening ten rounds. Adam
Symes was again among the Tigers’ best last week,
booting second-quarter goals to feature in the coaches
votes for the fourth-straight match. Paul Bower was
prominent, while Sam Gilmore booted three goals.
Montmorency will be favoured to claim its fourth win
on the trot when it hosts neighbour Lower Plenty.
Montmorency’s midfielders benefitted from ruckman
Joel McLellan’s dominance as the Magpies claimed
a 64-point win away to West Preston-Lakeside.
The Magpies’ top-end were all influential, with Ben
Fennell, Stephen McCallum, Jesse Donaldson and
James Brooker finding plenty of the footy, and Patrick
Fitzgerald and Ben Walton sharing seven goals. Billy
Jenkin was great off half back.
Lower Plenty was gallant in last week’s defeat to
Macleod, winning the second and third quarters to
trail the reigning premier by just 14 points at threequarter time. A final quarter fadeout was worsened by
wins to Whittlesea and Northcote Park. Patrick Flynn
continued his exceptional season with a dominant ruck
performance, while Darcy Barden booted four goals
This week’s action includes a Sunday showdown
between West Preston-Lakeside and Northcote
Park at J.E Moore Park.
After an impressive month, West Preston-Lakeside was
ordinary in last week’s home loss to Montmorency.
Shaun Gannon was clearly his side’s best player, but he
had few helpers in the big defeat. The Roosters have
enjoyed little success against Northcote Park in recent
times, managing just one draw in their past nine
outings.
Northcote Park produced its best performance of the
year last Saturday and will remain a finals chance if
it can record successive wins for the first time this
season. The Cougars excelled in the last quarter last
week, booting 6.5 to zero. Aaron Shaw and Mannon
Johnston combined for seven majors, Ben McNiece
starred, while ruckman Simon Potter impressed.

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1
BUNDOORA
Today we play Heidelberg at Yulong Reserve. The Tigers
are unbeaten hopefully we can change this situation.
LAST WEEK: Whittlesea showed us why they deserve
to be back in Division 1 with a fine display of team
work, passion and fast ball movement, something
we have been lacking since we played Montmorency.
The Eagles had the ball on a string and had one of
those days where even a miskicked ball found a team
mate. Captain Nipper Marshall with a broken nose and
dislocated finger led the way along with Matty Dennis
and Josh Grabowski, attempting to create opportunities
for our forwards however Whittlesea wanted to win
this game so badly they could taste it, they just shut
us down, Our U19s and Reserve sides played well and
both won their games. With some hard training during
the week we can get back on track and give the NFL’s
powerhouse Heidelberg a run for their money.
AROUND THE BULLRING: Happy Birthday to
Michael Gravina, hope it was a good one.
Thanks to Damian Brady we appreciate your time
HEIDELBERG
We’re happy with where things are at.
SENIORS: Last Saturday brought with it the winteriest
(if there is such a word) conditions of the season.
Pleased to report that no one went missing in the mud.
Our ground held up surprisingly well considering how
much rain we had. It was certainly a day for the screwin studs, which I think no one wears anymore. Sam
Gilmore was again outstanding and Paul Bower had a
stellar game off half back. In an entertaining game the
Bergers were able to handle whatever Greensborough
threw at us to maintain our unbeaten run.
RESERVES: Last week the twos were unhappy, in
particular with the second half, against a solid Borough
twos unit. Riders was consistent all day as was Benny
Irving. Unfortunately we could not put a solid four
quarters together.
ROUND 11 PREVIEW: Today we travel to Yulong
Reserve for our first hit-out of the year against
Bundoora. As always, we’re expecting a tough
encounter. We’ll get a good idea of exactly where we’re
at as after today we’ll have played everyone.

and energy managing our main bar. Great to see the
Yarrambat boys joining our team during the downpour
of rain last Thursday, they all looked like drowned rats
when they came off the ground and it was pleasing to
see our netball girls at the club during the week picking
up their warm up tops.

PREMIERSHIP REUNION: It was great to see the
1986 premiership crew last week. There was an
excellent roll-up at the 86 reunion. Waistlines were
thicker, hairlines thinner and tales taller. Everyone
seemed to have a great afternoon, with some travelling
from interstate to be there. Good time had by all.
PRESIDENT’S LUNCH: Remember to book your spot
at next Saturday’s President’s Lunch with three-time
Hawthorn premiership captain Luke Hodge our guest
speaker. It’s got the Hawk supporters salivating.
140 YEAR GALA: On July 16 the club is holding our
140 Year Gala Celebration Ball at The Manningham

together to celebrate such a significant milestone for
the club. Booking can be made through

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1
ELTHAM
The boys are back at home this week where we host
Whittlesea.
LAST WEEK: The senior game was a disaster at
Northcote Park last week. Did not start well and were
always chasing. To be just a couple of goals down
at the last change and give in so meekly was most
disappointing. With our poor percentage we can ill
afford to drop too many further games in the upcoming
weeks. The reserves battled well but just were not able
to bridge that two-goal gap in the last quarter. The
under=19s had a great win and are progressing well.
LACHIE RICHARDSON 250 A-GRADE GAMES:
Congratulations to club great, Lachie Richardson, who
is set to attain 250 A-Grade games today. Hoping the
results is a better one for him this week.
PRESIDENT’S LUNCH: Our next President’s Lunch
is today. There may be some tickets on the door. Being
held at the Eltham Football Club rooms, Central Park,
Panther Place, Eltham. The guest speaker will be 1999
Coleman Medal winner Scott Cummings. Scott played
at four AFL clubs – Essendon, Port Adelaide, West
WHITTLESEA
It took 701 days to taste the success of a Division 1 win.
It took only seven more to replicate the feeling.
THE CLUB: All credit to Jim, Declan, Blacky and the
22 who took the field, a sweeter victory rarely tasted.
The boys can take pride in knowing they are the first
Whittlesea outfit to defeat Bundoora. Today we tackle
the Panthers and as our miniseries rolls on, we are 2-0.
NETBALL: From 5 of 6 one week to 2 of 6 the next,
admittedly, with two of the teams playing one another.
Tough night with some close losses, but it’s the nature
of the game. Four teams will enjoy the bye this week.
Hopefully we come away with two wins.
SENIORS: Brilliant all day, leading from start to finish
and the boys really deserved to soak it up. Briffa
was lost before the game, but Demps came in and
celebrated his 21st birthday in style. Much the same for
the big OS, celebrating his birthday with a win. Clancy
returned from the Knights and played his best senior
game whilst the remaining 21 were just as good.
RESERVES: Brilliant but not enough to take the four

points. All were impressed by the endeavour and
having PorkChop up forward gave the lads an outlet
and he converted well. Chooka was brilliant, whilst
Blake, Lachy and Toops threw themselves at everything.
A strong performance against Eltham last time and we
are a better team this time around.
UNDER-19: Disappointed in the first three quarters
and couldn’t fault the last. Strong performances from
the schoolies, who remain with us this week. As a unit
we will be better off for the first game under the belt
with a full compliment. The lads will be keen to record
a significantly better performance against Eltham this
time around.
$5K DRAW: Will be held on Saturday July 16 from
7:30pm after the Heidelberg game. Tickets are $100and

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1
MACLEOD
We came away from a trip up the road to Lower Plenty
with wins in the seniors and reserves and a close loss in
the under-19s.
LAST WEEK: Lower Plenty took it up to us from the
start and it was clear they had come to play. With a few
big outs we were on the back foot but we kept hanging
in there. We held sway in the first half but a fired up
Lower played with desperation and determination in
the third quarter. Coach Ramsay put the acid test on a
few players with a spirited three-quarter time address
and the boys responded as a good side should. Hobbsy
and Bluey (eight goals) provide a spark up forward and
Hayden Seivers repelled many Bear forays into the front
half. The twos bounced back and won comfortably with
cult figure Noodle providing the highlight of the day
with his first goal in Macleod colours. The under-19s
were pipped on the post by four points after looking
the goods for most of the day.
SCOOTER 150: Justin ‘Scooter’ White plays his 150th
game today, a great milestone for one of Macleod’s
much-loved characters. Shy and retiring, Scooter has
GREENSBOROUGH
Today we head to Macleod.
SENIORS: It was a tough day at the office for the
seniors, who came up against the well-oiled machine
that is Heidelberg. The Tigers controlled most of the
play and we fell to our second straight loss, this time
by 30 points. Josh Griffiths continued his stellar season
with another great performance, whilst Ricky Mullins
and Chris Clark were tough in the middle. This week
against Macleod is a massive game as both teams sit at
6-4, just one game clear inside the top 5. The boys must
ensure we get the W!
RESERVES: Recorded a solid win over the third-placed
Heidelberg, running out 37-point winners to keep top
spot on the ladder. The guys have had a very promising
start to the year and as we continue to regain more
depth, the race for positions in the team will heat up.
With pressure on every week to perform, there is no
room for complacency of any kind. Josh Doherty was
clearly best afield in a fantastic performance, he was
ably supported by Cam Jordan and John Pritchard, with
Caillin Kett again starring in the ruck.

THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football League Record
asked for a low-key build-up and won’t be doing any
media until post game. Scooter now has the honour of
playing 150 games for both the junior and senior clubs
– an outstanding achievement. Well played champ!
LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT: After today’s clash against
Greensborough, there will be live music in the social
rooms starting around 5pm and going into the evening.
BUSINESS LUNCH: Friday July 29: Melbourne’s bestknown funny man and Richmond tragic Mick Molloy
will be the special guest at this year’s MFC Business
Lunch at De Winton Park. The lunch will also feature
another well-known Tiger – Jake ‘The Push-Up’ King.
$75 includes 2-course lunch, and pre-lunch drinks
package (beer, wine, champagne, and soft drink). Book
with Michael Lovett 0418 380979 or Michael.Lovett@
afl.com.au.
UNDER-19: The future stars had the weekend off
and will look to get back on the winners list against
Macleod today.
SOCIAL NOTES: We have a few events on the horizon,
with the Linen Day/Lunch coming up on July 9, as well
as Joel Quinn playing afterwards on the same night at
the rooms. Our next players social function is on July 16
and is BOROFEST, more details to follow.
AROUND THE CLUB: Thanks to the players who
participated in wearing orange boot laces to help raise
awareness for StepBackThink’s #TeamLaceUp campaign
to help stamp out social violence. Donations to the
cause can still be made at the clubrooms.
RUMOUR OF THE WEEK: With “Interesting Andrew
Stellas” still off the grid overseas, we’ve had to look
elsewhere for entertainment, with this juicy rumour
doing the rounds at the Boro! Which Boro Boy is
considering applying for the next season of ‘The Block’
as he feels he as a carpenter, and his Mrs as a prominent
interior designer and artist are the “Perfect Prototype”
to win the competition?

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1
MONTMORENCY
Today we offer a very warm welcome to our
neighbours Lower Plenty
SENIORS: It is incredible to think in Round 4 we sat
bottom of the ladder and were facing a 41-point deficit
against Greensborough. To now be sitting in the top five
after Round 10 is a terrific effort. It was another terrific
performance last week as seniors got the chocolates
against West Preston-Lakeside. Ben Haynes was
delighted with the very solid four-quarter performance.
After a tight first quarter the visitors bounded away
to run out 66-point victors. Ben Fennell continued his
white-hot form in the midfield, Billy Jenkin made a great
return in defence whilst James Brooker and Stephen
McCalllum provided plenty of drive. The Magpies broke
the 100-point barrier for the third week in a row on
the back of multiple goals from Patrick Fitzgerald, Ben
Walton and Ben Fennell. It is imperative we maintain our
concentration against the Bears.
RESERVES: Continue to escalate their competitiveness
each week. Last Saturday were a little slow out of the
boxes before a late rally saw us come up two goals
LOWER PLENTY
Today we make the long trip North to take on
Montmorency.
SENIORS: Started well against Macleod last week and
in what is becoming a bit of a common trait fell away
towards the end of the day. Goal Kickers: D. Barden 4,
C. Sleep 2, A. Doumtsis 2, T. Pettie, P. Flynn, R. Gray; Best
Players: D. Barden, P. Flynn, R. Gray, B. Poyser, C. Monger,

RESERVES: The reserves struggled in a big loss to
Macleod. Goal Kickers: B. Equid, L. Groves, T. Ralph, E.
Smith; Best Players: L. McTaggart, E. Smith, B. Equid, N.
Llewellyn, T. Ralph, N. Sayers
UNDER-19: The Cubs started the day off well with
a thrilling win to keep their finals aspirations alive.
Goal Kickers: C. Johnstone 4, N. Waters 3, L. Sewell, N.
Campbell, D. Iozzi, B. Turner; Best Players: F. Delbridge,

UPCOMING SOCIAL FUNCTIONS: The $5K Draw
will be upon us before we know it. Keep Sunday the 7th
August free. Tickets will be available shortly.

THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football League Record
short. Alek Tsardakis booted five goals, with Lewis Franz,
Luke Chiocci and Jackson Nunan among the strongest
contributors. Today’s clash is a critical match for Mark
Spinosa’s team in the quest to keep the season alive.
UNDER-19: Made it five in a row and consolidated
second place on the ladder after Saturday’s demolition
of West Preston-Lakeside. The Mont crew produced
four quarters of very solid footy against the Roosters to
run out 99-point winners. The Mont defence was again
outstanding and the ability to restrict the opposition
scoring has been a hallmark in 2016. Tom Davis booted
five with Jackson Jones, Jacob Fahey and Callum Stubs
very prominent for the Magpies. Today’s game against
Lower Plenty looks to be a danger game in what is
proving to be a competitive grade of footy.
FAMILY DAY: Tomorrow at the clubrooms. The day
features the $10,000 Monster Draw and commences at
midday. To purchase a ticket contact Mark Smith 0407
855 700 or Mick Grattan 0413 388 538.
JUNIORS: Congratulations to Nik Cox, Jarrod De Luca
and Daniel Mezzalira on chalking up 100 games for the
Magpies last Sunday. Great effort boys.
CAVEMEN: Some people are still recovering from the
first luncheon but don’t forget to lock in the second
lunch on July 22. Don’t miss out book a spot for your
guests by contacting Tony or Steve. Lineup to be
announced shortly.
FIDA BEARS: Beat the top team back on June 19 and
are currently enjoying their mid-season break.
COMMUNICATIONS: We will continue to
communicate to all stakeholders via our website

App. If you don’t already have it please download the

WEST PRESTON-LAKESIDE
Today, Sunday it’s the Nelson Alexander Oval again to
battle for the Mellerick/McNeice Cup.
TODAY: We welcome all our guests and sponsors to
The Boss’ Lunch and hope you enjoy the day. Introduce
yourself to our sponsors and when you visit make them
aware of your presence and how grateful we are that
we have them on board
LAST WEEK: Some days you kick, some days you get
kicked. No Tommy, no West Preston the Commissioner
was heard to say but I watched the game in silence with
the radio team nearby and been onto the engraver and
told him you spell it with 3 Ns. The twos had another
victory and the 19s kept battling away and the two
Georges keep enthusiastic. Thanks to Mont for hanging
around for a refreshment during and afterwards.
MEMBERSHIPS: $50, it’s never too late.
SOCIAL: July 9 – Grease Is The Word. Tickets available
now see Marie, Jodie or Robyn. Limited tickets are
still available; August 6 – Major Draw; Rooster Raffle –
Thursday nights. Jackpot approaching a grand drawn
Thursday nights at 8:30pm.
NORTHCOTE PARK
See you all on Sunday at our away game against our
Darebin neighbours West Preston, where we hope to
retain the McNiece/Mellerick Cup.
SENIORS: After a disappointing loss last week, the
team was keen to bounce back. Welcome additions to
this week’s team were Schultzy, debutant Tom Jackson
and Ben McNiece. In heavy conditions, the game was
very tight, with both teams giving their all. The third
quarter especially saw tremendous pressure being
applied by both teams. Whilst the game was very
close, at three quarter time the Cougar faithful could
sense something special was about to happen. What
happened in the last quarter was magnificent! The boys
completed dominated, keeping Eltham scoreless and
without a forward 50 entry, whilst managing to kick six
goals ourselves. Shawy was marking everything within
his grasp and when he was wasn’t Mannon and Aaron
were crumbling and kicking goals. The defence, led by
Jules, Damo, Bosca, Sutts and Chill were very tight.
RESERVES: During the week David “The Weasel” Ienco
announced his retirement and to mark his valued
contribution, he was afforded the honour of leading the

ladies team in next year’s NFL Women’s League. So Jon,

NETBALL: Section 1 had a big win last week and
sits second, three games clear of third. They had the
bye last Friday. The twos lost narrowly. Thanks for the
Toasties at last home game.
GOLF CLUB: The big match play tournament against
The Woodsmen was on today so hopefully the game
was played in great spirits and within the rules. Then
it’s off to Ray Drummond Preston for the indoor match
July 16.

team out. The boys got off to a great start, leading by
four goals at quarter time. Whilst, the team was never
headed, the next three quarters were very close tussle
with the margin being only a goal with six minutes
to play. Nevertheless, the team rallied and were
determined to win and see off their popular comrade in
style, which they duly did and carried him off to much
applause by the Cougar faithful. Solid contributors
were Maxy Coutts, Micky Naldrett and Koden. Thanks to
under-19 players, Daniel Brown, Kieran Jacksic, Brandon
Brown, Liam Waldron and Janus Waldron who filled in.
UNDER-19: Extremely slow start, with Eltham kicking
the first three goals before our boys realised the game
was being played. The boys started to lift in the second
quarter, with Alistair giving his all in the ruck and
Andre and Matty Brown laying tackle after tackle. The
next three quarters were very competitive, during this
time Simmo and Kizza were playing everywhere and
keeping the boys in the game. The 34-point loss was
not indicative of the competitive nature of the game.
SOCIAL: $100 Day is on Sunday July 24 at Bill Lawry

DIVISION 2 – Preview
TOP FOUR TAKING SHAPE
Round 12 sees sides outside the top four hosting
teams sitting inside the top four. On paper it appears a
straight-forward week for the finals-bound teams, but
as always is the case in Division 2, results are hard to
predict.
Heading into Round 12, Hurstbridge is three wins
and a percentage clear atop the Division 2 ladder. A
flawless opening nine games has aided the Bridges’
hopes of clinching the minor premiership, but it is the
Holy Grail in September that is the bigger prize for the
club from Greysharps Rd.
This round begins with Panton Hill and North
Heidelberg facing off at Cracknell Reserve.
Panton Hill slipped to sixth place following a 26-point
defeat to the Fitzroy Stars last Saturday, where a slow
start was costly, with the Redbacks’ 28-points behind
at the first break. It was their third straight defeat and
after some promising weeks, they are now fighting to
stay off the bottom of the ladder.
Tyler Scarce was once again voted as one of Panton
Hill’s best players in last week’s loss at Sir Douglas
Nicholls Oval, along with Daniel Haynes and Matthew
Duckworth. Haynes was also handy up forward,
booting three goals, along with coach Joffa Byron who
kicked three majors.
North Heidelberg’s five-game winning run came to an
end when it narrowly lost to undefeated Hurstbridge
by nine points. Trailing by 50 points at half time, the
Bulldogs kicked 11-second half goals to nearly pinch
a remarkable win – closing within three points in the
last quarter.
Pasquale Saccuzzo nullified the impact of Tom Simpson
in the second half and was voted the Bulldogs’ best
performer, while Shane Harvey was instrumental and
kicked three of his four goals in the final term.
The Bulldogs will take confidence from their secondhalf display but the first half would have been a worry
for coach, Stephen Saddington. A goalless opening
half is disappointing no matter the opposition, but
when it is against the best side in the competition, it
usually means the game is over.
Lalor slipped to the bottom of the ladder following
a 70-point annihilation to former cellar-dweller,
Thomastown. Lalor’s task doesn’t get easier this week
when it hosts Fitzroy Stars.
In what would be described as their worst performance
by Christopher Chrysostomou
for the season, the Bloods allowed Thomastown to kick
20 goals against them for the second time this season,
after also slipping to a 39-point loss when the teams
met in the opening round.
Todd Hughes was the only bright spot for the Bloods,
with his five goals increasing his season tally to 38
majors – meaning he has booted 40.8% of the Bloods’
goals for the season. Jhye Baddeley-Kelly and Shane
Jacobs were also good, but better performances from
the rest of the team will be required for the Bloods to
find a way off the bottom.
This week the Bloods come up against a Stars side in
good form. The Stars have won three of their past four
and have opened up a two-game gap on fifth-placed
Thomastown. Against Panton Hill, Daniel Francis, John
Hayes and Kain Proctor all kicked three goals, while
Lionel Proctor, Clinton Benjamin and Mungara Brown
were standout performers.
Round 4 was the last time these sides played each
other and it was the Stars who held on for a twopoint win, courtesy of four goals to Daniel Francis and
Michaelis McMasters.
The final game of Round 12 sees Thomastown host
third-placed Diamond Creek at Main Street Reserve.
Following four weeks at the bottom of the table,
Thomastown moved up two spots courtesy of its win
over Lalor. The Bears’ score of 132 was the first time
since Round 1 they have kicked over 100 points in a
game. Meanwhile, Lalor’s score of 62 was the lowest
the Bears have conceded this season.
Michael Di Battista kicked five goals in his second
game senior game following a long injury layoff, Jacob
Osei-Duro found form with four goals and Matthew
Dirkx and James Rizzolio played great games.
Diamond Creek will be hoping the bye has not affected
the form it displayed in its last outing. In Round 10,
the Demons accounted for Lalor by 72 points. Jack
Prosser’s two goals and all round performance saw
him voted the Demons’ best player, while Nathan Searl
kicked three goals. A win this weekend would put the
Creekers in a strong position to play finals for the first
time since 2013.

DIVISION 2
THOMASTOWN
For the first time in a while we played a complete game
of football against Lalor.
SENIORS: The first quarter was a dour struggle and we
found ourselves holding a slender lead at quarter time.
From then on we maintained our ascendency and to
see us build on our lead as the game wore on was very
encouraging. Hopefully that is the match that turns
around our fortunes for the back half of the year. We
have some challenges ahead but that’s what makes the
coming weeks exciting.
RESERVES: We did what we had to do against
a depleted reserves line up. It was a genuine
team performance with everyone making a solid
contribution. The win helped us solidify a spot in the
top three and now a big game awaits against Diamond
Creek. It sounds very cliché but this week is an eightpoint game and, in front of our home crowd, we need
to be at our best to get a positive result.
NETBALL: The five netball teams are having great
seasons and, whilst the crowd support has been fair,
we still need our members to get down on a Friday
DIAMOND CREEK
We return from the bye to take on Thomastown
SENIORS: In trying wet conditions we seemed to
adjust to the conditions better than Lalor. After a slow
start in the first quarter, with only two goals kicked, we
managed four goals for each of the other quarters. Our
defence was again a strong point and we managed to
restrict Lalor for the majority of the match. We have
nine contributors to the goal scoring but we can still
improve on the goals to points ratio.
RESERVES: After the first quarter it looked like being a
tough slog for the day with both teams showing good
defence. The conditions made it tough going and no
one was giving an inch. The second quarter looked like
a completely different game with our defence holding
strong but we got more ball out of the centre and
managed to accelerate the score. This trend continued
until the end of the game and resulted in a comfortable
win. Eight goal contributors, led by Todd Owen with
four. Another good win just past the halfway mark of
the season.

THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football League Record
night and lend their voice to the netball cause. So, once
again, I ask that we get down to support the girls.
DEAN SINCLAIR’S DATING TIPS: This week Dean
has some tips for those on the dating scene who are no
longer in their youthful twenties: “Dating after 30 is like
‘Are we doing this or not? I have stuff to do!’ ”
SOCIAL NEWS: Our next function is the “Oktoberfest”
which will be at the clubrooms on Saturday the 23rd
of July. More details to follow soon. Also, another
reminder that the annual Reverse Draw will be held at
the rooms on Saturday the 30th of July, so lock in the
dates now.
UNDER-19: Have had two games since the last report
and winning both has moved us to the top of the
ladder. The Epping game, who have been the giant
killers this season, started as tough game. Again we
were slow out of the blocks and that may be because
we hadn’t played for two weeks due to a bye and
walkover. Eventually we got started and finished off
with a comfortable win. It was good to see Ryan Payne
back after injury and scoring goals. Last week was the
battle for top spot against undefeated Banyule, who we
edge out in a great competitive game.
NETBALL: Have enjoyed success in Division 1, 2 and
3 over the past two weeks and Division 4 suffered two
losses by 1 and 5 goals. We are on the cusp of having all
4 win in the same week.
SOCIAL: $10,000 Draw is happening tomorrow Sunday
July 3 at the clubrooms from 1pm. There are still a
limited few tickets if you wish to come. Reminder the
Members Draw is on every Thursday between 8:00
and 8:30pm. Members need to be present in rooms
to collect or prize cumulatively jackpots the following
week.

DIVISION 2
LALOR
Today we come up against the Fitzroy Stars who are
going along nicely.
SENIORS: Thomastown were too quick and more
desperate for the ball and the scoreboard showed the
result. We can make excuses for injuries but the effort
has to be given or we will suffer for the rest of the
year. Goal Kickers: T. Hughes 5, J. King 2, S. Smith, R.
McDonald; Best Players: T. Hughes, J. Baddeley-Kelly, S.
Jacobs, K. Toronis, R. Marshall, J. Freebairn.
RESERVES: The reserves struggled for numbers and
were belted by the top team in the competition. Goal
Kickers: J. Arceri 2, M. Roumanos 2, B. Wheatley; Best
Players: D. Henderson, J. Baldasso, A. Barker, J. Arceri, D.
Polidano, A. Sneddon.
AROUND THE TRAPS: The goal of the year has
to belong to Rhino after baulking three players and
drilling a goal from 70 metres. That’s what he was
telling everyone late Saturday night. But I think the
video will show the truth. Pouchy was very animated
last Saturday coming up with a few comments. The
FITZROY STARS
This week we have Lalor as we look to build some
momentum going into the business end of the season.
SENIORS: Coming off the bye it was imperative to
capitalise on the good form we generated from the
four previous weeks. Panton Hill got us last time with
a barnstorming finish and there was no way we were
going to allow that again, particularly in Jacko’s 150th
and Jai and Alboy’s 100th. The opening term was our
finest, with six-goals to two.. Hayes got off to a flyer,
as did Kain and Mungara. After quarter time it was a
real arm wrestle. Every time the Redbacks mounted a
charge we would answer with a goal. This happened
all day, with the Stars running out 26-point winners. In
his 150th for the club Jacko turned back the clock to
be BOG, with Benji nipping at his heals. Mungara loved
the boggy conditions with Jai amassing 12 tackles and
Hayes and Franga both slotting three, with Hayesy
bringing up his 500th goal for the club.
RESERVES: Also had a terrific game with a very strong
line-up consisting of many senior players and they
played accordingly. With Seado’s 300th on the line

printable ones, “We never played like this” and “Here
comes the puppet, the couch has his hand up your
back.” Our condolences to the McQuinn family on the
passing of Alf. Alf played back in the 70s at the ripe old
age of 40 and was a gentle giant with a big fist.
TODAY: Today we come up against the Fitzroy Stars
who are going along nicely. We came up 2 points short
last time against them so a team effort today can put a
smile back on the supporters’ faces.
GO BLOODS!
everyone pitched in to record a 51-point win, with Seado
the best, followed by Koolyn, Marlon, and big Potts.
NETBALL: Our netballers had a successful night with a
draw, three wins and a close loss. The firsts had a draw
against Greensborough, the second side got up against
Diamond Creek 39-34, Whittlesea got our thirds 40–26
while the fourths and fifths got home against the two
Thomastown sides.
TOOL OF THE WEEK: While our CEO has not put a
foot wrong since joining the club seven years ago, it
was with great delight the boys caught him out with
a fashion gaffe. After doing some shopping for an
upcoming wedding, SMC was tickled pink with his
efforts to come up with some fashionable shirts and
shoes. After explaining how good his Van Heusen
shirts were, SMC was questioned on the name of the
shoes. He responded with “something Smiths, Wilson or
William or Wilbar Smiths”. His efforts to be trendy fell on
deaf ears with all the laughter, and he is now referred
to as Wilba. Anyone interested, it is actually Windsor
Smith.

DIVISION 2
PANTON HILL
This week we welcome North Heidelberg and both
sides really need to be on their game to improve on our
performances when we last met the Doggies. Seniors
almost got there in Round 2.
FOOTBALL: We were just a fraction short in both the
senior and reserves matches last week against Fitzroy
Stars. We had a lot of the footy. It looked like we could
go on with it, let it slip away, then looked like a chance
again, then let it go. Seems to happen a little too often
but it’s the main thing the club and the coaches have
been working on this year to bridge that last little gap
we need to put sides away regularly. That’s both teams!
Our best in the ones were T.J, Haynesy, Matty Duckworth,
Chook, Scotty and Dinesy…oh, Joffa got airborne and it’s
been suggested there was some “hang time”. The twos’
best included Josh Barton, Dan Taylor, evergreen Pratty,
Ben Hibberd, Micky Linton and Benny Mitchell.
SOCIAL: The annual PHFC Ladies Luncheon has been
rescheduled to Saturday, July 30 and will be held at the
Panton Hill Hotel. Last year the event raised $6,000 for
NORTH HEIDELBERG
This week a further ride up the mountain to Panton
Hill where the big boys will look to bounce back from
our loss at Hurstbridge. For all teams leave nothing to
chance and hopefully the result will look after itself.
SENIORS: Could not buy a goal in the first half and
the Bridges were too slick and dominating across the
ground, being 50 points ahead at the long break. We
regrouped thought about what we are here for and
came out a different team to get within three points
in the last, however could not get across the line. We
take plenty out of it but need to work on those starts so
let’s get it right today. Best: P. Saccuzzo, M. Florance, D.
Bramich, L. Villanti, J. Iezzi and L. Gilbert.
RESERVES: Terrific win against a quality opponent,
just shows what can be done with application,
commitment and supporting each other. Side getting
stronger by the week however let’s stay focussed and

raised over the 10 years of the event. Blokes, spread
the word to all the ladies in your life – wives, partners,
mums, sisters aunties, cousins and friends. Nominate
yourself as their designated driver then come to the
footy and watch us take on Fitzroy Stars while the girls
enjoy themselves.
JUNIORS: No games this week being the middle
of the school holidays but next week our under-11s
meet Keon Park on their ground at 10am while the
under-13s face up to South Morang at Cracknell also at
10am. Would be great to see the seniors at a couple of
games supporting the kids. Special mention for another
milestone two weeks ago. Jay Newman played his 75th
game. Congratulations Jay and we’re all looking forward
to celebrate your next milestone game at Panton Hill.
THINK ABOUT THIS: Boy gets home from school and
says “Dad, I’ve got a part in the school play as a man who’s
been married for 25 years.” His Dad replies “Nevermind
son, maybe next time you’ll get a speaking part!”

pushed Hurstbridge last time around. Today we have
the opportunity to make amends so play to the ability
that you are capable of and stick to the plan and you
are a real chance for another win. Best: S. Lennen, J. Hall
and C. Hayes.
NETBALL: The netballers had one win out of four
last Friday however all teams entrenched in the four
or on the edge so plenty to play for to season end. If
any of our members can get to a game the girls would
appreciate your support.

HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3 - Preview
BURRA LIFT TO GRAB SECOND PLACE
St Mary’s won a thrilling match against Mernda at
Whatmough Park to move up to second spot on the
ladder in Round 11 of Heidelberg Golf Club Division 3.
The Burra came from behind at the last break to pull
away for an 18-point victory. Ex-Reservoir premiership
player Toby O’Meara booted four in his first senior
game for St Mary’s.
“We had been playing well without getting a result,”
St Mary’s coach Con Borg said. “But, especially when
we got headed, it was a great show of character after
three quarter time.”
While the game for second place was tight, all three
bottom teams disappointed and were beaten by big
margins.
Watsonia accelerated after half time against Banyule
at R.J. Brockwell Oval to win by 65 points. The win
puts the Saints three games clear of the Bears. Jeremy
Bennett slotted five goals for Watsonia – his best haul
for 2016.
“In the second half, it was great to see our pressure and
our Watsonia brand of footy,” Watsonia coach Corey
McCall said.
“Credit to Watsonia,” Banyule coach Jason Plant said.
“They turned up the heat in the second half; our guys
panicked and threw the game plan out. Some players
need to have a good, hard look in the mirror in terms
of their honesty and accountability.”
South Morang scored 26 goals despite heavy
conditions in its 134-point demolition of Heidelberg
West at Mill Park Lakes Reserve. With good delivery
from further afield, Kane Maghamez, Paul Harrison and
Wayne Pavitt combined for eighteen goals.
“(We’re) really looking forward to next week against
Epping,” Lions coach Dean Grainger said after the
game. “As close as the competition is, it will be a good
challenge for both sides.”
After some improved performances, the big loss was
a low point for the Hawks. “We’ve just got to keep our
heads,” Heidelberg West coach Grant Toms said. “We
have another seven weeks to go and think positive.”
In a similar score to their Round 2 encounter, Epping
flew out of the blocks to record a 130-point win over
Kilmore at J.J. Clancy Reserve.
Aaron Willits bagged 11 goals, bettering his 10-goal
haul in Round 2, and was instrumental in breaking the
game open early.
“We got off to a really good start,” Epping coach Greg
by Doug Long
Whitcroft said. “But after half time Kilmore fought
back, showed a bit of spirit and made it harder for us
to score.”
Sixteen-year-old Calder Cannons-listed player Liam
Middleton did well in his second game for Kilmore.
“Playing Epping today was definitely a learning curve
for our development,” Kilmore coach Travis McCarty
said.
“We face another challenge in travelling to Heidelberg
West in a game we feel will be a tight contest with
both teams hungry for a victory.”
Round 12 provides some interesting match-ups at
both ends of the ladder. At the bottom, Heidelberg
West hosts Kilmore at Heidelberg Park.
Their only previous meeting resulted in a 69-point win
by Kilmore at J.J. Clancy Reserve and it will be a vital
match for the Hawks as they attempt to open their
account for the 2016 season.
Mernda will be looking to get back on the winners’ list
with a home game at Waterview Recreation Reserve
against Banyule.
With their finals hopes looking over, the Bears would
love nothing more than to notch a win over a top-four
team after several near misses.
Mernda will be favoured after their only other meeting
resulted in a 41-point win in a polished display at R.J.
Brockwell Oval.
In a match-up between the potent forward lines of
Round 11, fourth-placed South Morang travels to
Epping Recreation Reserve to play Epping.
For the top of the table Blues, this is the first of three
vital games in a row against premiership hopefuls –
with tussles against St Mary’s and Mernda to follow.
The Lions have won seven out of eight to almost match
Epping’s seven-straight victories. Epping’s last loss
was to South Morang by 14 points at Mill Park Lakes
Reserve in Round 4.
Watsonia ended St Mary’s six-game unbeaten streak
in Round 7 at Whatmough Park with a convincing win
and now the two combatants face off in a vital game at
A.K. Lines Reserve.
Should the Saints win by about three goals or more,
they would move ahead of the Burra on the ladder.
Meanwhile, a St Mary’s win could possibly see them
share top spot on the ladder.

HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3
EPPING
Today’s matches are sure to be hotly contested and will
no doubt show us where we are at.
THE CLUB: After a couple of good wins last week
on an icy cold day at Kilmore (who have the best
sausage rolls in the league!) we face South Morang at
home today. Just a reminder tomorrow is the Annual
$5K Draw. Tickets are still available, please see Kim
Chambers.
SENIORS: We had a great start for a change, kicking
nine in the first quarter which was very encouraging.
We moved the ball very well at times, however in the
second half Kilmore had a lot of the ball and made us
work very hard to gain possession with their possession
game and attack on the ball.
RESERVES: With a few of the boys pulling out it was
going to be hard but, to the boys’ credit, we hit the
ground running with two of our smallest lads having a
day out! Tommy “Eddie Betts” Emmins kicked seven and
Dom joined in with six as we managed 10 goal kickers.
Special mention to Fergs who seemed to have the ball
SOUTH MORANG
This week it’s off to Epping for all three games.
LAST WEEK: We hosted Heidelberg West who we
know give their all each week and keep turning up. We
played a lot better footy but then again so we should.
SENIORS: This will be another season-defining
game as if we win we could be as high as second and
consolidate our place in the top four. Lose and we
could again be out of the top four. Goal Kickers: K.
Maghamez 8, P. Harrison 6, W. Pavitt 4, B. Nesci 2, J.
Steele, C. Meredith, J. Hewson, D. Caruso, D. Heatley,
A. Capeci; Best Players: J. Potter, K. Maghamez, P.
Harrison, D. Caruso, J. Steele, J. Ranellone
RESERVES: Epping will be itching to beat us and try
and climb up the ladder so this is definitely a danger
game. Goal Kickers: N. Mittica 6, H. Nguyen 3, B. Meade
2, T. Jinnette 2, S. Crump 2, L. Buckley 2, T. Stevens, J.
Mark-Simpson, T. Vandekolk, M. Howden; Best Players:
L. Simmons, L. Buckley, Z. Knight, H. Nguyen, D.
Delromano, S. Dickson
UNDER-19: After last week’s fiasco with Panton Hill
we need to just get on the park and play as best we can
44
THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football League Record
on a string. After creating a 40m lead and commanding
the ball, Bennett decided to hit up Nashy lace out, Fergs
dropped to his knees with his hands on his head and
shouted “he burnt me!” much to the amusement of the
bench. Another special mention to Herbie after his first
game after a 10-year hiatus! Now he just needs to work
on kicking the ball higher than 400mm off the ground!
Choc was everywhere with his head over the footy, so
much so that he required a headband change at each
of break. This week is a big test against ladder leaders
South Morang. We must be switched on from the very
first bounce; we don’t want to lose at home!
UNDER-19: It was a good effort for three quarters.
We faded out in the last giving Kilmore a comfortable
win. We will have to play a lot better than that to bring
home the four points this week.
UPCOMING EVENTS: July 9 – Teams of the Century
Presentation. Please contact Steve Passeri for tickets on

against Epping and ensure we keep putting pressure on
the two teams above us.
SOCIAL: This week it’s Man O Man and if any guys are
not already coming please be aware it is a compulsory
function and all players are required to attend. There
will be tickets available on the door for $35 per head
ladies for anybody who wants to attend.

HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3
HEIDELBERG WEST
Today we welcome Kilmore to Heidelberg Park for the
very first time. With the boys still searching for a win, it
is sure to be an action packed contest.
SENIORS: Started strongly last week against South
Morang and we were competitive during the first and
third quarters but blown away by the Lions potent
forward set-up during the other quarters. Liam
Pender continues to play strong football and was ably
supported by handles, Stephen, Brucey and Brad.
RESERVES: Came up against a very outfit strong South
Morang outfit and we battled hard but were simply
outclassed. Looking to double up against Kilmore this
week after beating them back in Round 3. Best players
in defeat were Gally, Josh and Lewy.
NETBALL: The netball girls are really flying and
continue to build momentum and currently sit on top
of the ladder! Great work ladies, keep up the great
work.
SOCIAL NOTES: The next two social functions are the
Player Night on the 9th of July and the $3,000 Draw
which is on the 30th of July.
KILMORE
This week we travel south to take on Heidelberg West.
SENIORS: In Round 11 we hosted the Epping at J.J
Clancy Reserve. Going into this game, Epping had lost
only the two games for the season and were sitting on
top of the ladder. Unfortunately, this game proved to
be a long tough day for our boys, as we had no answers
against a side that was well drilled, experienced
and showed why they are the team to beat in the
competition. Young star Liam Middleton was adjudged
our best player on ground, whilst Brian Bell and Darcy
Bedggood were just some to be named in our best.
Even though the result is a difficult one to accept, as a
group we are continuing to learn and understand as
to what is required to become a better team and what
it takes to match it with the best. This learning curb is
another step in the development process for the future
as we strive together.
UNDER-19: We played Epping and we needed to
regroup after a hard-fought loss to Banyule the week
prior, but I knew if we could improve we had a big

chance of winning. With some players back in this week
it would certainly help our chances. Conditions were
pretty wet and muddy so we really needed to start well,
which we did. We missed a few chances but in the first
half we played some pretty good football. At the half
time break we spoke about keeping the pressure up
and to keep working together, and also how ordinary
our third quarters have been. Well the start of the third
saw us slipping again, so I need to change players
around. This seemed to help us and we had a small lead
at the last break. I just asked the boys to keep working
hard and the win would be theirs. Our last quarter was
by far our best. The whole group worked together and
came away with a strong win.
NETBALL: Overall the Kilmore netball is improving
every week and we are seeing consistent games from
all teams. We are really enjoying the new league and
are excited about the future for KFNC.
SOCIAL: Remember to bring back your 10K Draw
books ASAP.

HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3
MERNDA
Last Saturday we lost three games that we had led
during crucial stages of the second half. We must make
sure that we do not do that ever again.
SENIORS: The context of the season meant that we
needed a win to get two games clear of third, and
we blew it with St Mary’s kicking six goals in the last
quarter. All in all, it was a very disappointing loss… it
was a game where we took over control in the third
quarter and we ended up letting them run around
doing as they pleased and they kicked four goals in
seven minutes to start the last quarter. Lezzy lead from
the front, Joshy played well, Carders was busy, but it
was just very disappointing.
RESERVES: Equally as disappointing was the way the
reserves lost, after holding a 13-point lead during the
last quarter. St Mary’s kicked the last three goals of the
game and we lost by four points in the end. Welchy
played well, as did Hammer, who kicked four goals.
Irrespective of the result, we wish Sass on the best in his
recovery from a serious ankle injury that he sustained
yesterday – we’re right behind you, mate.
BANYULE
All three sides are on the road this week when we
travel to Waterview Recreation Reserve to play Mernda.
SENIORS: Another week with another very young
side which looks like a promising bright future for this
proud club. From the get go we never adjusted to the
conditions which made our skills very poor throughout
the whole day. Our young kids were able to hold
their own but Watsonia were much more experience
and bigger bodied who just ran away in the second
half. We look forward to keep bringing the future
cubs through week in and week out. Goal Kickers:
R. Hay, B. Nethercote, T. Cowey, J. Smith, M. Edwards,
S. Tanudtanud; Best Players: R. Keys, N. Biscontin, J.
Smith, W. Drapac, D. Langford, R. French.
RESERVES: A game that got away for us in the end,
with the match ending as draw. We had a lead that we
should have held onto but we didn’t capitalise in front
of the scoreboard. The first half saw a slow start from
both sides with no one really taking control. The second
half we took the edge going into the last quarter but
we couldn’t go on with it. We look forward to another
48
THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football League Record
UNDER-19: The first frustrating game of the day was
the under-19s having 28 scoring shots to 14 and still
finding a way to lose by a point. Some very poor kicking
in front of goal was the culprit, and that means we now
have a bit of a mountain to climb in terms of getting
into the finals. Jamie and Seb were very good, as was
Luce, while Tickets and Blacky kicked a couple of goals
each.
NETBALL: Mernda 1 went down to Greensborough
in a tight encounter, losing 38-29, while Mernda 2 was
unable to get the job done against Hurstbridge, losing
34-16. Mernda 3 also went down last Friday night,
losing 23-17.
TODAY: Now that we’ve blown last Saturday, every
game is now crucial in the context of our season, and
it starts with Banyule today. We simply cannot afford
to drop another game in any grade for the rest of the
season, it’s as simple as that.

WATSONIA
Today we face second placed St Mary’s at A.K. Lines
Reserve.
LAST WEEK: Last week we went out to Banyule for
what was a reasonably successful day.
SENIORS: After Banyule got the jump on us we
steadied through fantastic delivery to our forwards.
Jezz sensed a big bag and didn’t get sent off this week.
Having 22 instead of 21 helps a lot as it turns out and
we took a comfortable lead into half time. After half
time the Banyule boys sounded determined to ‘break
the hoodoo’ against us but they’ll have to keep hoping
as we ran away in the third. Jezz was on fire and really
entertained the Bucks party on the hill. Another fine
win, looking to get another today against another side
we’ve experienced success against in recent history.
Goal Kickers: J. Bennett 5, J. Larkin 4, A. Alfonsi 2, H.
Mitchell 2, M. Buzinskas 2, A. Bennett, J. Haber, J. Brown;
Best Players: X. Kelly, H. Mitchell, J. Bennett, J. Larkin, J.
Allan, M. Buzinskas
ST MARY’S
Watsonia away is always a tough assignment, but
today in the new clash strip, it’s time to put the past
behind us and accelerate our claims to be the best side
in Division 3
MERCHANDISE: The new hoodies look great, a new
supply of polos has also arrived so no excuses for
supporters not to proudly wear the colours to every
game. See Adam Lucci or Matt Patti.
FOOTBALL: Rising to meet challenges is an important
part of how a club is perceived from outside and
within. Last Saturday against Mernda, all three teams
overcame the odds to come out victorious. The under19s turned around a Round 4, 75-point loss to outlast
the opposition by one point. The twos came from
behind to record a nail-biting four-point win, whilst
the seniors came from 10 points down at three quarter
time to run out 22-point winners. Dillan Ronalds, Mitch
Lee and Matt Dambrauskas were named best for their
respective sides. We now have the seniors and reserves
in the top two, with the 19s just one game out of the
four.
NETBALL: Fair to say, Friday night was disappointing
50
THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football League Record
RESERVES: Last time we played this mob they rolled
us by 110 points, and considering some of the outs we
had even the biggest of optimists would have found
this to be a hard day at the office. We were able to stick
with Banyule for the first half through some fine work
from Sam Lieshman and Tom Frawley. The third quarter
saw Banyule get a bit of a break but we were still in
touch. We were able to swing the momentum in the
last quarter but just couldn’t get over the line, with the
match ending in a draw.
GO WATS!
for the three teams, for different reasons. The firsts
remain a game clear on top, despite losing to seventhplaced Bundoora, 21-33. The seconds almost pulled off
a great victory against top-placed Watsonia, but ended
with a 29-all draw to stay two games out of the four.
The third team went down 37-12 to second-placed
West Ivanhoe and need to start stringing wins together
quickly.
SPONSORS: Recently, we held our inaugural
Business Forum and luncheon.. This was a hugely
successful event and was well supported from the
local community. This could not have been possible
without the ongoing outstanding support of Netwealth
Investment & Superannuation and Integrity Financial
Planners. Take every opportunity to support our
sponsors and let them know you’re from St Mary’s.
SOCIAL NEWS: Tomorrow – $5000 Draw. Make sure
you get a ticket as someone walks away $5K richer. It
could be you; July 9 – Past Players Day. The marks are
higher, the kicks are longer, the legends are bigger. Just
ask ‘em. A few beers, up behind the glass, and you can
all tell each other how great you were.

TAC CUP – ROUND 12
STEP BACK THINK
Today, the Northern Knights will face the Murray
Bushrangers at Norm Minns Oval. Today is a fantastic
opportunity for the boys to win back to back games
after last week’s win against Bendigo. We look forward
to a great contest from both teams this afternoon.
Last Thursday, it was great to see Harrison Reid and
Charles Roberts attend a Step Back Think day at
Carlton Primary School, supporting the #TeamLaceUp
campaign. It’s great to see these boys not just
developing as athletes but as people as well.

JUNIOR Review - Round 11
A look back at the weekend’s junior results as teams
took to the field for Round 11 of the 2016 Northern
Football League junior season.
The Under-18 Girls competition saw Darebin
continue to sit atop the ladder after a 24-point win
over South Morang in the top-of-the-table clash at
Bill Lawry Oval. Bridgette Hallal was named best for
the Falcons, who led at every change. Montmorency
produced a stunning comeback victory over Epping
to leapfrog the Blues into third place on the ladder.
Trailing by 12 points at three-quarter time after only
scoring three behinds, the Magpies found an extra
gear in the final term to hold the Blues scoreless for
the term and record a nail-biting three-point win.
Hurstbridge beat Wallan by 40 points for its fifth win,
while Greensborough beat Mill Park in a thriller by two
points.
It was a close round in the Under-17 competition, with
all games decided by four goals or less. Yarrambat and
Wallan played out a thrilling draw at Yulong Reserve.
It was the ladder-leading Magpies’ second draw of the
season after they came from 15 points down at threequarter time to square the ledger at the final siren.
Mill Park and Whittlesea also engaged in a nail-biting
affair, with the Stallions getting their second win of the
season in a five-point result. Research, Greensborough
and Eltham were the other winners for the round,
winning by seven, 11 and 24 points respectively.
Laurimar Black got back on the winners’ list in the
Under-16 Blue competition, comfortably defeating
West Preston-Lakeside at Laurimar Reserve, booting
an impressive 20 goals for the day. South Morang
had a much closer win, when compared to the rest of
the competition, after beating Eltham by 38 points
at W.A Smith Reserve. Greensborough moved within
percentage of the top five after a win over Wallan,
while top side Montmorency won its 10th game of the
season.
Whittlesea remains on top of the Under-16 Red

big defeat at Laurimar Reserve. Kurtis Green was
named the Eagles’ best in the win. Pouncing on the
opportunity, Hurstbridge leapfrogged the Power into
third place after it easily accounted for Mill Park at Ben
Frilay Oval. Research consolidated second position
after it also posted a convincing win, defeating South
Morang at Research Park thanks to 10 goals from Jack
Wilkinson.

Montmorency was the other winner for the round,
using its home ground advantage to post a 44-point
win over West Preston Lakeside to consolidate fourth
spot on the ladder.
Diamond Creek moved to 11-straight wins in the
Under-15 Red competition, defeating Epping by 19
points at Epping Recreation Reserve. The Creekers

Following the Blues’ loss, Wallan was able to move into

for the round, defeating Northcote at McDonnell Park.
Good luck to all sides in their Round 12 matches after
