Match day
environment at
NFL football and
netball matches
is a major focus
of mine, and I
have conveyed
this to all clubs at a number of
meetings prior to the
commencement of the season.
The NFL’s image, brand, credibility
and reputation are quantified by
the way everyone behaves at NFL
matches. This behaviour not only
affects the NFL, but it also affects
every NFL affiliated club. From a
senior club perspective, a poor NFL
image impacts on clubs’ ability to
recruit players from the AFL / VFL
and other major senior leagues. If a
potential recruit hears poor feedback
about the NFL, he is unlikely to want
to play for a club who is affiliated with
a league with a poor image. It also
impacts a club in other areas such as
sponsorship, membership and the
overall ability to generate the much
needed funds to operate a club.
Parents of junior players want
their children to play in a league
that is professionally managed
and matches are played in quality
environments. If the NFL does not
have a positive image for junior
football, parents will not register
their children with NFL clubs and
they will most likely travel further
to register with a club from a
neighbouring league. This will create
a ripple effect, meaning less teams
and less divisions per age group.
This makes for uneven competitions
and a poor experience for the child,
resulting in a decline in participation.
To any reasonable person this all
makes sense, and they understand
the importance of creating a quality
environment on match day to
THE NORTHERNER
ensure a positive experience every
time they are involved with the NFL.
To those who do not understand
this, or who do not want to control
their emotions and the manner
they conduct themselves, the NFL
is not a place for you. As CEO of
the NFL I will not tolerate poor
behaviour at NFL matches and I
will support every club as they deal
with anyone who misbehaves.
This season is just four weeks old
and I can inform you that two
club match day officials have each
received a LIFE time ban from the
NFL tribunal and the NFL board.
These officials were acting as a club
boundary umpire and a club runner
for junior teams. To see parents
behaving in this way is totally
unacceptable and it will not be
tolerated in anyway.
Every player, parent and spectator
is entitled to attend NFL football
and netball matches and enjoy
watching the game without having
to put up with people behaving
badly. If you are one of these
people who do not behave in an
acceptable manner, I encourage
you to take a good hard look at
yourself in the mirror, and make a
conscious effort to change the way
you behave at an NFL match.
Those of you who attend NFL
matches and conduct themselves
as the community would expect
you to, and there are many of you,
I say thank you, and I hope you
continue to support the NFL for
many years to come.
The NFL will continue to have
a sharp focus in this area, and I
am committed to creating the
best possible environment for all
participants within the NFL.

PRESSURE THE KEY FOR ROOSTERS
by Samuel Zito
West Preston-Lakeside coach Frank Raso credited his
young side’s defensive pressure and resilience for its
surprise 12-point win over Bundoora at Yulong Reserve.
Fielding six players eligible for under-19s and a further
two under-17 youngsters, the Roosters were still able to
outlast the reigning premier in tough conditions in the
13.12 (90) to 11.12 (78) result.
Trailing by nine points during the last quarter, Raso’s
men booted the final three goals of the game to claim
their second win of the 2014 season, securing their place
inside the top five on the Division 1 ladder.
The second-year coach said his side’s ability to sustain
pressure without the football was a key factor in the victory.
“Our biggest challenge was going to be our work
without the footy – our chase, our tackle our pressure.
We’ve trained a lot on our defensive transition,” Raso said.
“To keep on top of a side at home was very pleasing,
especially to come home in the last quarter.
“I really put it on the guys at three quarter time and
demanded a little bit more from everyone to play better
footy. We had 60 per cent of the contested ball to their
40 and we kicked 3.8 to their three or four scoring shots.”
West Preston-Lakeside’s back six were all instrumental
in the victory, containing Bundoora to its lowest score of
the season.
Talls Nathan Valladares and Kirk Lang were able to
nullify the impact Cameron Cloke and Neil Gloury, while
Ali Fahour, Joel McDonald, Travis Stevens and Luke
McKenna all offered drive from the back half.
Electrifying forward Alroy Gilligan again thrilled the
crowd with his high leaping and magical acts inside
attacking 50.
He kicked a match-high four goals, including two in the
final quarter, to take his season tally to 11 from three
matches.
Raso said he was still looking for more refined
performances from Gilligan, although he was happy
with the last-quarter output of the new recruit.
“He’s still got some improvement but he’s definitely got
some tricks,” Raso said.
“Our defensive side is something we’re big on and he
had some harsh words spoken to him about doing that
4
THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
and he actually made two tackles inside forward 50 and
one led to a goal.
“That was the pleasing thing, that he was doing the
defensive work in the last quarter, even though it wasn’t
there in the first three.
“He’s played well in the last quarter the past three weeks
now. He’s definitely valuable for us.”
West Preston-Lakeside now sits fifth on the ladder, with
two wins and a draw from its opening four matches.
Its record could well have been 4-0, but for a final
quarter fadeout at Northcote Park in Round 1 and a
wayward late snap from Glenn Robertson in the threepoint defeat to Greensborough in Round 3.
Despite those missed opportunities, Raso said he was
pleased with the way his club was tracking during the
opening month of the season.
“For 90 per cent of the four games the guys have
followed the coaches’ instructions and that’s really
pleasing,” he said.
“We’ve definitely got the ability with the players we’ve got
and their work rate without the footy to compete against
the top two or three sides from the past year or two. I
think the guys are starting to believe that a little bit.
“We need to win the games we’re expected to win and
the Greensborough game last week was one we should
be winning. We could easily have been four-zip or 2-2, but
the boys are playing the way we’re asking them to play.”
A home game against bottom-placed Eltham awaits the
Roosters in Round 5. Raso said it was paramount his side
didn’t take its winless opponent for granted following
such an impressive win at Bundoora.
“There’s no doubt that my message this week to the
boys is to not get too over confident and to get the
process back in place,” he said.
“We don’t just deserve to win against Eltham who aren’t
travelling so good simply because we beat Bundoora.
We’ve got to go out there and do it all again. The process
has to be reinforced and we’ll have a hard week on the
track.”

ROOS MAKE IT THREE ON THE TROT
By Ben Pascuzzi
Macleod held off a late Greensborough charge to
record its third win in succession, winning by 16 points
at War Memorial Park on a wintery Saturday afternoon
in Round 4.
The Roos were in front all day, but an inspired
Greensborough outfit was able to get right back into
the match, cutting the deficit to nine points during the
fourth quarter.
But as the heavens opened up, the Roos kicked clear
and recorded a memorable 10.9 (69) to 7.11 (53) win.
Having been previously undefeated, the Boro were
slight favourites heading into the game following
wins against Montmorency, Eltham and West PrestonLakeside. However, it was the Roos who dominated the
contested ball from the first bounce.
With star players like Kane Shaw, Reid Brandt and Hamish
Paynter finding plenty of the ball, Macleod was able to
take ascendency over a sluggish Greensborough side,
whose disposal efficiency was not up to scratch early.
In the opening stages the only attacking being done
was from the Roos, and they were able to score after
some missed opportunities, with Mathew Pow slotting
home their first.
Another soon followed as Sean Driscoll snapped around
his body to give the visitors an early 14-point buffer.
The Boro were able to respond through spearhead Tim
Bongetti, as he kicked two of the last three goals of the
quarter to reduce the margin to a single point at the
first break – a good result for the host after being put
on the back foot early.
The Boro couldn’t keep their momentum running into
the second quarter, as Reid Brandt kicked his first of the
game to put the Roos up by seven early in the term.
Daniel Haynes kicked another for Macleod soon after as
they burst out to a two-goal buffer.
End-to-end ball movement took control of the game for
the majority of the term as both sides struggled to take
a mark inside their forward 50 for some time.
The Boro finally broke the goal drought, kicking one
through ruckman Michael Hooper to reduce the margin
to one goal. But a mark on the half-time siren to Driscoll
enabled him to kick his second to give Macleod a
12-point lead at the main break.
THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
As the heavens opened up above, so too did a flurry of
Macleod goals, as Reid Brandt kicked two of the Roos’
next three goals to take a game-high 29-point lead at
the final break.
In slippery conditions, the ball was very hard to handle
during the third term as both sides threw everything
into the contest. Despite being held goalless, the Boro
did have their fair of chances, but were only able to kick
six behinds for their efforts.
Needing something special to secure their fourth win in
succession, the Boro started the final quarter in the best
possible fashion. Goals to Matt Fowler, Corey Cogan and
Tristan Stead within the first 10 minutes of the term put
them right back in the game, trailing by just nine points
with plenty of time to go.
The Roos had not scored for the term and hadn’t looked
like doing so. That was until a costly backline error from
the Boro saw Nick Lynch pounce and slam home the
sealer against the run of play.
The Roos were well led from defence by Kane Shaw
and Brad Leggett, who both provided good run out of
the back half. Meanwhile, 23rd-man Reid Brandt kicked
three for the day.
The Boro’s best were Matt Fowler, Lachlan McQuilken
and Andrew Stellas in a disappointing day for the club,
where they let slip a chance to move first on the ladder
following Bundoora’s loss to West Preston-Lakeside.
Despite the defeat, Greensborough still remains third on
the table, with Macleod snapping at its heels in fourth.
The Boro now take on Northcote Park at War Memorial
Park in a must-win encounter for the Neale ‘Cowboy’
Carroll Cup. The Roos take on Bundoora at De Winton
Park in an intriguing top-four clash.
Final score:
Greensborough 7.11 (53) def by Macleod 10.9 (69)

DEMONS SCRAP TO VICTORY
by Michael Thompson
In a game that won’t make too many highlight reels,
Mernda defeated Lalor to consolidate a top two spot in
Division 2.
Let’s face it, this game won’t make the popular list on
the Northern TV portal. No game that sees nine goals
kicked for the afternoon between the two sides should.
However, the game was of critical importance to both
Lalor and Mernda, both desperate to improve their
record to 3-1 and take another step towards finals
football in 2014.
Mernda and Lalor have enjoyed a solid rivalry since the
Demons’ promotion to Division 2 last season, with their
three games in 2013 all decided by under five goals.
Early on, it didn’t feel like the game would become an
ugly, contested ball-dominated slog. The game began
at a hot pace, with both sides trying to implement their
game plan the quickest.
There seemed to be a pattern to much of the day –
generally, Lalor would dominate, but failed to take their
opportunities. Indeed, they kicked the first goal of the
afternoon – Tim Murphy taking advantage of some
great work from Lalor who took the ball from goal line
to goal line.
Little did anyone at the ground at the time know that
this goal would be Lalor’s only goal until the start of the
last quarter, and one of only two for the afternoon for
the Bloods.
Lalor had got its game into gear first, but couldn’t put
it on the scoreboard, missing two more opportunities
to put breathing space between themselves and the
Demons. The second missed opportunity saw the
Demons take it all the way to the other end of the
ground, to which Andrew Smith answered for the Dees.
Mernda then enjoy its best period of the game as it
began to take over in the middle and through Mitch
Kerslake, took a lead it would not relinquish for the
remainder of the afternoon.
Mernda’s seven-point quarter time advantage would
be extended early in the second quarter. Smith took
advantage of a smart centreing ball from Adrian
Stefanile, snapping through his second goal.
When Dale Piggott lost his man and kicked a simple
THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
goal from 20 metres out, the lead was suddenly out to
20 points – a big lead as rain began to hit.
Further complicating matters – a power outage
affected the ground which meant the siren was
not able to be used. Lalor began to take back some
momentum that Mernda had generated, but again –
missed opportunities that would have taken them into
half time in good stead. The margin was still only 17
points at the main break.
Despite these missed opportunities, Lalor started the
stronger of the two sides in the second half, forcing
Mernda to make some uncharacteristic errors coming
out of defence.
The Bloods, however, were unable to put this
dominance on the scoreboard, moving to 1.12 before
Daniel Bryant drifted forward to kick an important goal
against the run of play for the Demons.
The goal damaged Lalor’s morale for a little while as
they began to lose their cool, to which Luke Shelton
took advantage, extending Mernda’s lead to 26 points.
Dean Angelkoski finally broke Lalor’s goal-scoring
drought to open the last quarter, snapping Lalor’s
second goal. However, any hope of a miraculous come
from behind victory in nasty conditions were quelled
when Kerslake ran in and iced the game for Mernda
with his second goal.
It would be the last goal of the game – the conditions
turning the game into a hard slog with both teams
seemingly playing for time.
Bryant was Mernda’s best for the afternoon, with his
run and carry of critical importance for the Dees’ victory.
Jack Bianchin collected possessions at will in the
midfield, while Kerslake was also impressive in the 7.9
(51) to 2.17 (29) victory.
Tim Keily was Lalor’s best in the loss, while Jarrod King
had a solid game for the Bloods, also collecting plenty
of ball. However, it was not enough to get them over
the line, leaving the Bloods at 2-2 ahead of a huge
game at unbeaten rivals North Heidelberg.
Mernda, in the meantime, host Fitzroy Stars at Schotters
Road in Round 5, another game of importance in the
long run with both sides seemingly best positioned to
compete for a top two spot early on.
Final score: Lalor 2.17 (29) def by Mernda 7.9 (51)

BEARS MAUL LIONS IN WET
by Jarrad Conron
Thomastown has continued its unbeaten start to the
2014 Division 3 season with an impressive 70-point win
over South Morang in Round 4.
Despite wet conditions, the Bears were able to pile on
20 goals for the second consecutive time at home, to
run away with the 20.13 (133) to 9.9 (63) win at Main
Street Reserve.
Michael Di Battista starred up forward for the Bears
in sloppy conditions, kicking five goals in a best on
ground performance.
Jacob Osei-Duro was able to kick three to take his total
to 17 for the season, whilst Tristain Harrower and David
Folino were also able to slot three.
For the Lions, Ashley Hobbs and Lachlan Buckley were
able to kick three goals apiece.
Heading into the game on the back of a big away win
at Reservoir, the Bears were able to again get out of the
blocks quickly, kicking the first three majors of the game.
South Morang looked sluggish early following a 21day break between its most recent game – when it
defeated Heidelberg West in Round 2.
The Lions were able to settle though, and in impressive
fashion, kicking five of the next six majors to take a sixpoint lead into the first break.
As the rain began to fall, neither side was able to grab
a distinct advantage during the second term. The
Lions were able to nab two late goals to take a slim
advantage going into the main break.
Whatever Dean Sinclair said to his troops at half-time
certainly worked as Thomastown started the second
half with a bang.
The Bears kicked seven goals to one in the third quarter to
take a near unassailable 35-point lead into the final term.
The home side didn’t let up in the final quarter, slotting
another six goals to one to cap off an impressive day
with a percentage-boosting victory.
Even as the rain began to fall, the Bears were able to
maintain a high skill level and managed to move the
ball forward with ease.
When the ball was inside the 50m arc, their forwards
were able to capitalise and use it well to hit the
scoreboard. It has become a hallmark of the Bears game
in 2014, with the team averaging 129 points per game
in the opening month of the season.
Next week, Thomastown will face Heidelberg West at
home in a top of the table clash, while South Morang
will head home and look to pick up its second win of
the season when it faces St Mary’s.
Final score:
Thomastown 20.13 (133) def South Morang 9.9 (63)

Match Report Versus Geelong Falcons
On Saturday, May 3 the Northern Knights headed down
the Princes Freeway to take on the Geelong Falcons at
Simonds Stadium. In overcast and slippery conditions
it was the Falcons who got off to the fast start. Geelong
kicked four goals to zero in the opening quarter to lead
by 26 points at quarter time. The Knights began to fight
back in general play during the second quarter but still
struggled to impact on the scoreboard, until a nice snap
from Chris McCabe late in the term gave them their
first major. Geelong quickly answered and extended
the margin out to a commanding 33 points at the half
time break. The third stanza was a real arm wrestle as
Northern continued to throw everything at the Falcons.
Two lovely running goals from Sam Switkowski and a
nice set shot goal from Ciaran Porter allowed the Knights
to win the term by a point and give themselves a chance.
Missed chances in front of goal cost the Knights early
in the final quarter, while the Falcons continued to
kick accurately at the other end. Two late goals to Chris
McCabe and a quick snap off the ground for a major
by Anthony Di Paolo were not enough for the Knights.
The early damage was too much to peg back with
Geelong ending up winners by 35 points. Zac Ballard and
Sam Switkowski never gave up in the midfield for the
Knights while Ryan Tester was shining light in defence.
First-gamer Lachlan East showed some positive signs,

Northern Knights Drving Activity
As part of our partnership with the TAC, we look forward
to all our ‘L’ Plate Drivers, driving to Eureka Stadium for
this week’s game against the North Ballarat Rebels. This
activity will provide our young drivers an opportunity to
gain over an hour’s valuable driving experience on both
city and country roads as we make the trip along the
Western Freeway.
Jesse Tardio – Vfl Senior Debut
Congratulations to 2013 Northern Knights player Jesse
Tardio (pictured) who made his VFL senior debut for
the Northern Blues on May 3 against Coburg Lions.
Jesse had played the first four games in the AFL Vic
Development League and his impressive form could
no longer be ignored and he was rewarded with
senior selection. We hope that Jesse can continue to
be a regular in the Northern Blues senior team for the
remainder of the season.

Division 1 – Preview
COMPETITION INTENSIFIES IN TOP FLIGHT
by Samuel Zito
THE wet conditions did nothing to dampen the quality
of football served up in Round 4 and Round 5 again
provides a number of huge matches in Division 1.
On the back of last week’s results, Heidelberg jumped
to outright first despite pre-season speculation of a
slide in 2014, while West Preston-Lakeside and Macleod
recorded vital away wins to strengthen their positions.
De Winton Park hosts arguably the biggest game of the
weekend where Macleod will look to secure its fourth win
in succession when it hosts Bundoora. The Roos led at
every change in last week’s 16-point win at Greensborough,
staving off a final-quarter challenge by the Boro.
Hamish Paynter and Hayden Seivers both continued their
red hot form, with Paynter named his side’s best player
for the third time this season. 23rd player Reid Brandt
kicked three goals and proved a handy foil to Nick Lynch
and Mathew Pow in the absence of Justin White.
Bundoora succumbed to its first loss of the season when
it was overrun by a youthful West Preston-Lakeside
outfit at Yulong Reserve. The Bulls couldn’t quite handle
the Roosters defensive pressure and managed just one
goal in the final term. Kent Delbridge was his side’s best
for the second successive week, while star ruckman
Matthew Dennis sustained an injury late in the game
and is set to face a period on the sidelines.
Following its first loss of the season, Greensborough
again plays at War Memorial Park when it hosts
seventh-placed Northcote Park for the Neale ‘Cowboy’
Carroll Cup. The Boro closed to within nine points of
Macleod midway through the final quarter after trailing
by four goals at the final break, before running out
of gas. Lachlan McQuilken led from the front in the
loss, while Brent Ryan, Matt Fowler and Sean Salmon
continued their promising starts to the year.
Northcote Park registered its first win of the season in
thrilling circumstances last week and will look to build
momentum at Greensborough in Round 5, despite close
losses at the ground over the past two years. The Cougars
led for a total of four minutes in their one-point win over
Montmorency last Saturday. Trailing by 30 points midway
through the third term, they booted the final five goals of
the game and took the lead at the 29-minute mark of the
last quarter, courtesy of a Julian Violato goal.
Losses to Bundoora and Greensborough enabled
12
THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
Heidelberg to move four points clear atop the ladder,
who will now look to stabilise that buffer when it host
Lower Plenty at Warringal Park. The Tigers won all four
quarters in last weekend’s 48-point victory at Eltham,
where the team’s 17 goals were shared by 11 goal
kickers. Ruckman Michael Finn was best in the win,
while youngster Masaki Miki, Chas Sargeant and Luke
Hodgkin all played important roles.
Lower Plenty improved its record to 2-2 after four
rounds following last week’s eight-goal win over
Whittlesea, it’s second home victory of the year. The
Bears never looked trouble after racing to a 23-point
lead at quarter time. Big men Cameron Elmore and
Darcy Barden were significant performers, alongside
usual suspects Matt Vasilevski and Bill Barden. The Bears
will hold no fear travelling to Warringal Park, following
last year’s seven-point win at the ground.
West Preston-Lakeside will be favourite to win its
third game of the season when it takes on winless
Eltham at J.E. Moore Park. The Roosters could hardly
have been more impressive in last week’s 12-point win
at Bundoora, where they rallied from behind to kick
the last three goals of the game. The defence, led by Ali
Fahour, Luke McKenna and Nathan Valladaras, played a
noteworthy part in the win.
Eltham’s 32-year losing streak to Heidelberg continued
despite a spirited performance from the under-manned
Panthers. Matthew Keys and Lachie Richardson were their
side’s best, while Nick Tieri kicked a team-high three goals.
Montmorency managed to snatch defeat from
the jaws of victory at Bill Lawry Oval last Saturday,
surrendering a golden opportunity to move within
two points of the top five. The Magpies failed to kick
a goal after the nine-minute mark of the third term
and managed just three behinds in the final quarter
to Northcote Park’s 3.4. It was the second straight time
the Magpies have surrendered a five-goal lead to the
Cougars. They will look to bounce back at home to
Whittlesea this week.
The Eagles remain in ninth place on the ladder without
a win after a disappointing performance against Lower
Plenty, where they managed just two goals in the
opening half. Their efforts improved in the second half
but the damage had been done. Lucas Hobbs was his
side’s best in defeat, snaring five goals.

Division 1
WEST PRESTON-LAKESIDE
In an historic round of football, our girls team recorded
their first victory for the season in what is a trailblazing
season for the club. Well done to Abbey and her team!
TODAY: We welcome Eltham to Moore Park this week,
where we again go around in the very successful Lakies
outfit. There will be music and lots of cheerful banter
with a few drinks after today’s game in the clubrooms.
Hang around and celebrate another successful day and
catch up with a few people.
LAST WEEK: The large number of travelling fans were
well rewarded at Yulong last Saturday as we notched up
not only a rare victory for the seniors on their paddock,
but took the prize in all three grades – a feat thought by
some old timers to have never happened before! Best
in the seniors were the Skipper, Ali and Kirk Lang. Mick
Perfetto, Sando and Nial led the way in a big reserves
win, whilst in the 19s, Valeri D was again in the best
with Matt Belbasis and Brendan Dufficy.
GETTING THE JOB DONE: A big thanks to those who
help out on match day and ensure that we are up and
about. However, we need more assistance – don’t wait
to be asked.
ELTHAM
This week we travel to West Preston to battle an inform Roosters outfit who are coming off a good win.
SENIORS: The young players continue to show
improvement, matching it with Heidelberg for much of
the game. The team battled away well in the first half,
although we lapsed in intensity in the third quarter
and that was enough for Heidleberg to get on top.
Considering our loss to them in the last round of 2013
was by three goals and with a much more experienced
team, Saturday could be considered a good effort. Best
players were Matthew Keys, Lachie Richardson, Billy
Glasgow and Nick Tieri.
RESERVES: The reserves put up a better effort this week
when up against last year’s premiers. As with the seniors, the
third quarter was the term that the Tigers shook us off. Best
were Mikael Avramov, Louis Evripidou, and Luke Groves.
UNDER-19: Recorded a good win despite only having the
bare 18 players (down to 17 in the last quarter) against
Heidelberg who had a full complement of 24 players. The

HEIDELBERG
Moved to the top of the table with a win against
Eltham last week, while the reserves also returned to
form. Today we host Lower Plenty on Ladies Day and
look to continue our winning ways.
SENIORS: Congratulations to Tom Shepard, Ben
Kerton and youngster Isaac Edgar who all put in
good performances on debut. Not so fortunate were
the horrid conditions at Eltham. Jordan Treloar was
seen frantically trying to re-dislocate his shoulder
in the warm-up to get out of playing in the wet.
Congratulations go to Chaz Sargent, who was amongst
the best, standing in as club captain for the first time.
In an up and down performance, it was bigger bodies
and class in the wet that proved the difference. Michael
Finn showed you don’t need to teach an old dog new
tricks, because the ones he’s got work just fine. Masaki
was also at his best across half back. Another good win
combined with some favourable results in other games
sees the Bergs four points clear on top of the ladder.
RESERVES: A less than convincing first half from
LOWER PLENTY
Warringal Park holds no fear for us Bears but nothing
short of four solid quarters will get the job done today.
SENIORS:
Vinny had the boys up and about for most of last week’s
game against Whittlesea. We managed to turn up the
heat in a physical battle and come home with a good
win. Vasser ran amok, big Cam dominated on the last line
with ‘Rolls Royce’ Reecey boy mopping up everything and
continually banging it back into the forwards. Darce’s work
rate, Billy’s hardness and Adam Dennis’s run were also
highlights in somewhat miserable conditions at the Cave.
Welcome back Lozza Naismith.
RESERVES:
Sharpy had a full squad on the park but still had to work
to get the boys playing at their best. We played in patches
but managed to get fair dinkum when the game had to
be won. Jake McBean kicked four in a classy performance,
Zimbo was mercurial on the deck and Taggs is always
good down back. Aldy’s pace was a huge factor, Darcy
Sharples put a smile on the coach’s face and Smithy was at
his niggling best.

THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
Whitter’s Warriors opened up into another convincing
win. A hands-free Jack Ridewood special from outside
the goal-square was one of six third-term goals. Ryan
Stone was dominant, as was Jimmy McGrath out of
the square, while Ryan Lee and Daniel Cookson again
proved their worth in the wet.
UNDER-19: Continual improvement through training
and playing together wasn’t enough, with too much
left to too few in a game that Eltham controlled from
the outset. Glimpses of the sides’ capability were visible
again but in the end it wasn’t enough. Ethan Maineri and
Lewis Beers fought to spark a comeback. At 1-3, wins
have become paramount in keeping their season alive.
TODAY: We welcome the women of Heidelberg to Ladies
Day 2014, as well as welcoming Lower Plenty and their
faithful. Redemption at home is the order of the day
following Lower’s dominant win at our patch in 2013.
They’re travelling well at 2-2 and a win will be no easy
feat, as we look to notch up our fifth win on the trot.
#restoretheroar
UNDER-19:
Light on again for numbers, Sleepy set the boys up with a
game plan that would keep them within striking distance.
The boys launched a comeback in the last quarter that
turned the Cave into a pressure keg for the Eagles and set
the standard for the following two games. The boys fell
short by less than a kick but once again won the hearts of
the Bear faithful. Manny put on a clinic, Patty Cronin led
by example, Brandon Jones, Will Purvis, Doz and Tommy
Ralph round out the best players in another impressive
team performance.

GREENSBOROUGH
This week we take on Northcote Park in a massive
game for both clubs. It is fitting that we also pay tribute
to Cowboy Carroll on such an important day.
TODAY: Dane Swan will be hosting a luncheon and, if
interested, please make yourself known to one of the
committee in case there is still availability.
SENIORS: We were beaten by Macleod in a low-scoring
game. A few early goals in the final term could have
made things very interesting.
RESERVES: Had a very slow start and just couldn’t
bridge the gap. Not all doom and gloom, with the
return of Cam Jordon and Robbo who put in solid
performances.
UNDER-19: Had a great win with Liam Bowkett having
a great game, kicking six goals and capping it off by
taking an absolute screamer.
AROUND THE CLUB: Great to see Chris Beadles back
and helping out the club in various roles. Although
currently team manger, he put on a pair of Grey unisex
gym shorts and was runner for the reserves. Thanks for
your effort and camel toe.
NORTHCOTE PARK
The 1994 reunion side were witness to a thrilling onevictory on a very wet day at Bill Lawry Oval.
THE CLUB: Joe Amad and Peter McNiece put on a
fantastic day for the boys. The stories grew as the night
went on. Today we take on Greensborough which is
always a hard one at War Memorial Park. Let’s walk
away with the trifecta, boys.
SENIORS: First win for the season in a nail-biting onepoint win over Montmorency. The heavens opened up
and controlling the ball was very hard. The last quarter
was our best by far. Heaters ask the boys to dig deep
and put their bodies on the line. The boys responded
and we got the four points. It was the first trial of 23
players in the seniors and Nathaniel Leach came up and
did not disappoint. He looks a permanent player in the
near future. Better players were Wade Demasi, Dylan
Campbell and Julian Violato.
RESERVES: Another last quarter battle which saw both
sides fight it out to the last seconds. We were a point
down going into the last. With everyone leg-weary, the

NETBALL: Round 3 was a great improvement with
three wins and two draws from the five matches played
at RMIT Bundoora and Parade College on May 2. The
Boro netball club’s focus over the next few weeks is
to continue to build and work together in our teams
and as a club as a whole. Our results from last round
have proved us to be on this path. To quote the article
published on us in 2012, “cream always rises to the top”
and that is our motto for this season. Thanks to the
Netball girls who attended the Greensborough Football
Netball Club’s Ladies Day last Saturday. The day had a
great turnout and was enjoyed by all.
SOCIAL NOTES: Well done again to Paula and Tracey
on a great Ladies Luncheon. The Club has some exciting
social events coming up with Mr Boro, the Annual Boro
Ball and LinenHouse Day so check our website for dates
and details.
MEDIA: Follow us on Twitter @GreensboroughNC or

GO BORO!
boys had to be mentally tough. When Alec Deasey got
the magic pass to Tyler and goaled the boys could smell
victory. Well done fellas. Better players were Tyler, Gus
and Paul.
UNDER-19: Not a very good day for the under-19s who
were hit hard by injury. Thank you to Dylan Harvey and
Daniel Brown who came up from the 17s to fill in. We
started off well but derailed as the day went on. We
learnt a good lesson out there – give it your all for four
quarters. Better players were Oliver, Sean and Ryan.
SOCIAL: 80s Night is being held at the rooms on May
17, after the Lower Plenty game. It’s a 7:30pm start. See
Douglas or Jules for tickets.
HIGHLIGHT: The highlight of the 1994 reunion was
when Loris led the boys in song in the change rooms
after the seniors’ one-point win. On ya, Lorry.

MONTMORENCY
It was a hard day at the office down at Bill Lawry Oval,
with only one of the three teams saluting. We really
need to bounce back today against Whittlesea if we
have any finals aspirations.
SENIORS: After leading all day, it was bitterly
disappointing to relinquish the lead with only a
minute left on the clock. We have no-one to blame
but ourselves if we only play three quarters of football.
Luke Jackson gave us plenty of grunt in the midfield
and JD was as dangerous as ever, with Bomber also
picking up plenty of possessions. Our half-back line
was outstanding again with Harley Ryan playing
some sublime footy. Good news for Harley who was
accidently knocked unconscious late in the final
quarter; he has been given a clean bill of health by the
doctors and may even play today.
RESERVES: Led at every break except the last after
fading badly in the final stanza. If we believe we are a
serious finals contender then we must win these close
games! Good news for Nick Bowie – no break and the
WHITTLESEA
This week we face a huge task only some 100 metres
from last week’s performance as we face Montmorency.
We need to put four quarters together and display the
brand of football we are capable of.
SENIORS:
When you only play a half of football, you’d want to
hope that the half you play is ripping, otherwise you’ll
be on the end of a savage beating. That’s what we
encountered last week. The lads just weren’t with it
from 2pm to 3:15pm and when they woke up, we were
significantly better, but you can’t give a nine-goal start
to any team. Hobbsy snagged five goals in the loss, Jay
Russell and B-Rabbit were solid across the four quarters
whilst Sandbag did what Sandbag does. That aside, not
too many bright spots.
RESERVES:
Bolstered by the Big Fish running around in the earlier
game, the boys were neck deep in the contest until the
last 10 minutes. Gershy put together his best four quarters
for the year, whilst Homer was in his element with the
weather. Disappointing not to take the four points but the
performances are improving as the team gels.
20
THE NORTHERNER

ligament damage to his ankle appears to be minor so
chances are he will only miss a week. Better players
were the brothers Cole, Morgs and Turtle.
UNDER-19: The undefeated Cougars kicked two goals
in the first two minutes and a few of us were starting
to wonder if this was going to be a rout! To the boys’
credit they held firm and went into the main break with
a slender lead. The back line was desperate, and they
were ably assisted by the midfielders who were getting
hands on the ball first and giving the forwards scoring
opportunities. We ran away with the contest in the
final quarter and ran out comfortable 58 point victors.
Better players were Liam Newton, Nick Paton with four
goals and Drew Schleibs. The boys are now top of the
ladder but we must not become complacent.
MEMBERSHIPS: If you come down to The Nest to
support the team then you really should think about
becoming a member of our great club. Please see
Justin Mills, Mark Cleary, Greg Bowman, Dan Enright
Alternatively, go to www.montmorencyfc.com.au.
UNDER-19:
Shouldn’t have been as close as it was in the end and
the boys limped across the line. That said, 3-1 and
can’t be scoffed at and the future of the club is bright.
Nath kicked three, Sheepy played here, there and
everywhere, Chook was great in tight and loved the
scrap.
90S & NOUGHTIES:
A ripping night with DJ Schotty tearing it up. The
netballers had a blast and Jimmy Atkins took out the
‘best dressed’ award. The next function is being held
on May 24, heard it’s a Glow Party. Someone better tell
Don Binion...it took him a week to clean the carpet after
the last glow party.

MACLEOD
The seniors and reserves maintained their winning
form at War Memorial Park, a ground that has often
brought us undone.
SENIORS: Super effort from the ones to reclaim the
Derek Shaw Cup despite missing Scooter and Cathal.
We applied early scoreboard pressure and looked to
have Boro cooked when we led by 29 points at the last
change. But Boro slammed on three quick goals in the
final term before a clever goal from Lynchy. Hammer
continued his rich vein of form and young Reid Brandt
showed he’ll be a star of the future. Laurence Schubert
came up from the under-19s for his senior debut and
looks a real prospect. So it’s 3-1 and a chance to take a
big scalp against Bundoora.
RESERVES: While Chubbs was coming off a three-day
business seminar at Warrnambool, the boys rallied and
played their best footy to date this season. Big Libba
warmed to the task against his old mob and we might
have found one in Alex-Sean Ioannidis who took a couple
of strong grabs. Like the seniors, we’re now 3-1 and we

We would have to go back a long way for the last time
that we were winless at Yulong, but that’s exactly what
happened on the weekend.
THANKS:
Hats off to West Preston-Lakeside who certainly came
to play and left with the results that they deserved.
A big thank you also to the coaches, players and
supporters at West who came in and celebrated their
victories with a few drinks after the game.
SENIORS:
We’ve had many great tussles with West PrestonLakeside in recent seasons and Saturday proved to be
no different. It just goes to show that you need to be
on your A-game each week and that on any given day
the result can go either way. The scores throughout
A-Grade indicate that the sides are very even in Division
1 this year. Macleod today will once again be a great
challenge for us.
RESERVES:
We were treated to a football lesson in a clash between
the competition’s two undefeated sides. It was an

UNDER 19: A slow start proved the difference as Boro

West Preston-Lakeside were convincing winners and
once again displayed that we have a long way to go. We
showed glimpses of good football, but need to develop
more consistency in our game.
INJURIES:
The club would like to wish both Matty Dennis and
Brody Waugh speedy recoveries. Both received
significant injuries on the weekend.
SOCIAL: Saturday, May 17 is our first Ladies Day Lunch
at Yulong Reserve. The cost is $50 per head and the
day begins at 12:30pm. The price includes food, wine,
beer and soft drink, as well as many gifts and prizes. It is
always a great day. Please see Lee Ann Grant, Bronwyn

once again a massive thank you to all those who made

Division 2 – Preview
TOP FOUR SQUARE OFF
by Michael Thompson
Wet weather threatened to turn Round 4 on its head,
but we are one week closer to figuring out the Division
2 hierarchy given the even nature of the season so far.
Round 5 sees the top four play each other for the first
time this season.
One thing that wasn’t affected by the wet weather,
however, was North Heidelberg’s early season
dominance. Hurstbridge was its next victim, and this
win was achieved in their most devastating fashion
so far. If it wasn’t the 7.9 opening quarter which
shook fear into every other Division 2 side, it would
almost certainly be the 10-goal second quarter,
which saw the Dogs take a 94-point lead into half
time. The second half was a lot quieter, however,
the Dogs were still able to win by 111 points. Leigh
Gilbert and Lachlan Dowling kicked five goals each
for the Dogs, with Louis Hill best on ground and Gazi
Assi also putting in a solid performance.
The Bulldogs’ next assignment is with their rivals,
Lalor, who was unable to convert its relative
dominance into goals against Mernda last week.
The Bloods enjoyed some solid patches of
dominance against the Demons but could only
register 2.17 (29) in their 22-point loss to Mernda.
Tim Keily was Lalor’s best in the defeat, while Tom
Bonson, Shannon Smith and Jarrod King were
also solid performers. The Bloods will rue their
missed opportunities which could have seen them
consolidate a position in the top two.
Mernda took victory thanks to a great patch
through the first and second quarters, which saw
it kick four goals in quick succession, two of them
coming from captain Andrew Smith. Mitch Kerslake
kicked two goals himself, including the sealer in
the final term, as Mernda took a big step towards
finals football by moving to 3-1. The Demons now
take on the Fitzroy Stars – the second week in a
row that second plays third.
The Stars were made to earn their victory against
a Panton Hill outfit full of confidence following its
first victory of the season against Hurstbridge the
week prior. That confidence was on display early on
as the Hillers shot to an early 15-point lead. They
26
THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
were able to take a three-goal lead into the last
quarter but could not hold on in an intense Stars
surge, which saw them kick 4.7 to 1.1 in a frenetic
final quarter. However, it took until the final minute
for the Stars to hit the front, through debutant Max
Maynard, which saw them take a six point victory.
John Hayes kicked four goals for the winners, while
Lionel Proctor kicked two and was best on ground.
Panton Hill lost no admirers in the loss, as Daniel
Fulton kicked three goals, while Brett Middleton,
Will Box and Tyler Scarce were also amongst the
Hillers’ best. Their competitiveness against last
year’s grand finalists creates a very intriguing
matchup with Diamond Creek at Cracknell
Reserve in the setting sun this week, with Diamond
Creek losing their fifth game on the bounce,
stemming back to last year’s first semi-final,
following a home loss to Epping.
The Creekers didn’t have enough spread of goalkickers
in their 5.10 (40) to 7.13 (55) loss, with Hugh Kavanagh
kicking four of their five goals. They trailed by 20 points
at half time as Epping enjoyed a three goal to zero
second quarter, which – despite reducing the gap to 10
points at three quarter time - was just too big a gap to
chase down in the inclement weather. Kavanagh was
easily Creek’s best in the defeat which sees them in a
pressure-cooker scenario at 0-4.
Epping’s Round 4 victory puts it right back in the
frame to move back into the top four should it
claim a victory against Hurstbridge this week.
Daniel Moore was best on ground for Epping last
Saturday, who also had Aaron Willits kick two
goals. Moore, Harley Nancarrow, Lucas Aquilina,
Joel Dunmore and Adrian Totino also got on the
scoresheet in an important victory for the Blues.
They now host Hurstbridge at Epping Recreational
Reserve with the Bridges having been shaken by North
Heidelberg’s devastating first half. Although they trailed
by 101 points at three quarter time, the Bridges missed
an opportunity to put some respectability back on the
scoreboard, kicking 1.8 in the final quarter. Jack Furlong
kicked two goals on debut, while Sean Jellie continued
his excellent start to the season. Michael Ryan was also
amongst Hurstbridge’s better players, along with Furlong. WWW. NFL. ORG. AU

Division 2
NORTH HEIDELBERG
This week we face our old rivals Lalor. It is also the
20-year reunion of our 1994 Premiership teams.
1994 REUNION: On that day the seniors beat Lalor,
breaking the curse in a 18.14 (122) to 13.14 (92) win,
while the reserves knocked off Bundoora 15.25 (115)
to 11.7 (73).
SENIORS: A brilliant first half by the seniors was as
good as footy as we have played for a long time. Again
poor kicking let us down, but taking a 94-pointt lead
in at half time was sensational and timely with the
rain coming just before the break. Gilbo and Lachie
provided the targets up forward, with Harvs, Paz and
Tags doing the grunt work in the middle and Louis
and Gazi providing plenty of run. The second half was
a non-event in the rain but if we can keep playing this
brand of footy we are going to be tough to beat. With
some very good players in the seconds knocking on the
door, everyone in the seniors is fighting for their spot.
At the moment they are doing a very good job without
a single weak link in the team.
LALOR
Last week the boys took on a revitalised Mernda in
tough conditions for football.
SENIORS:
The game was still in the balance up until the final
quarter, where bad kicking by Lalor allowed Mernda to
hold a slight lead. In the end we could manage just 2.17
for the day, with the Bloods going down by about three
goals. Best Players: T. Keily, T. Bonson, S. Smith, J. King, T.
Hughes, J. Baddeley-Kelly.
RESERVES:
The reserves tried hard all day, yet with a few injuries
lacked the balance to be super competitive. Best
Players: B. Ranieri, B. Polidano, N. Lewis, D. Ray, D.
Papadopoulos, T. Hillman.
UNDER-19:
The under-19 boys had their first win for the year,
getting some much needed confidence with a big
victory over Mernda .Keep getting to training boys as
you have the talent to go all the way.
28
THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
RESERVES: Another solid win for the seconds who
remain undefeated. Having kicked six points before
managing their first goal, the boys should have had the
game sewn up by half time but instead only lead by 29
points. A pretty even second half saw the Bridges put
up a fight but the damage was done early and the final
margin was 38 points. Mass kicked six goals, Belle and
Micky Mead were good, along with the veterans JR and
Tyson.
$1,000 DRAW: Will be held next Saturday, May 17. $30
per ticket, with beer, wine, soft drink, finger food and
entertainment provided. See Fridge.
ALAN DIDAK: Our Round 7 game against Epping on
May 24 will see former Collingwood premiership star
Alan Didak in action for the Doggies. Free entry on the
day except cars. This will be a wonderful community
day with a half time Auskick show involving local kids
and West Ivanhoe JFC.
NETBALL: Nth A defeated by Bundoora Comets 29-50;
Nth B defeated Bundoora Comets 27-15; Nth C defeated
Fitzroy Stars 31-22; Nth D defeated by G’Boro 20-17.
AROUND THE TRAPS:
It was an eventful day at home last week as the power
went off halfway through the first quarter of the main
game. With some brilliant actions from one of our
executive staff members, a stainless steel tray and a
large spoon was offered up as an alternative to the
siren. Phone contact was made with the scoreboard
attendants and time keepers with a minute by minute
countdown put in place to ensure the tray and spoon
was banged just at the right moment. The umpires
clearly heard the ruckus and ended the quarter at the
correct time. This continued for the rest of the day with
both teams satisfied with the result. The only unhappy
person was the canteen manager who couldn’t find his
pie tray for the half time lunch!
THIS WEEK:
We head to North Heidelberg who are yet to lose one
this season. We have to be at our best this week to
knock them off and get back on the winners list.

EPPING
A good result in the seniors last week, let’s now make it
two in a row today. Make sure you get a raffle ticket and
win a ticket to the $5000 Draw.
SENIORS: Great to get our second win to keep us in
touch with the top four. Good to see us bridge the gap
a little between our good footy and bad. It was more
consistent performance over the four quarters. Let’s
keep improving from quarter to quarter and the results
will take care of themselves.
RESERVES: The boys worked hard, but got beaten by
a more experienced and skilled side. Fergus Cullen and
Turners worked hard, Volkan was the only goal kicker
and Macca and Dobbin showed improvement with
their fitness. We just need to win more of the footy.
UNDER-19: Extraordinary circumstances left us with
17 players last week and only 16 on field in second half.
But tremendous effort by all and special mentions to
Jake Wilko, Blake and Tyler for their contributions on the
day. We re-group this week at home and look forward
to getting back on track.
HURSTBRIDGE
Last week we played host to North Heidelberg, the
benchmark of the competition. Unfortunately we were
unable to match it with top team.
SENIORS:
With our back against wall we looked at creating the
upset of the round. Unfortunately North Heidelberg
had other ideas, with a seven-goal to one first quarter
which really set the tone. It was a bit of the same in the
second quarter and the game was over at half time.
With too much class, more experienced personnel and
bigger bodies, we were boys playing against men and
the scoreboard showed. Positives for the day was we
never dropped our heads and fought it out to the end.
In fact, we dominated the inside 50s but quality is what
we required. Another positive was the senior debut of
Jack Furlong, kicking a couple of goals.
RESERVES:
Unfortunately our boys could not carry on from
our performance last week, with North Heidelberg
getting the jump on us and basically dominating the
play. Some bad kicking allowed us a slim chance of a

BLUES BLURB: Senior boys bounced back well from
last week. Harley has lost his left foot so when found
please return it ASAP. Browny, aka TOK needs to calm
down on Insta otherwise he may find himself on the
outta with a lot of the boys and paying some hefty
fines. Matty G looks like making his return to football,
hopefully in the next month. Club is now selling Epping
logo skivvies, so please see Nick Krstevski to order.
SOCIAL: Saturday, May 24 – Opposite Sex Night
following the North Heidelberg away game; Saturday,

Reunion, featuring Bobby Skilton. Tickets are $30. Book
early by contacting Tony Taggart on 0417 373 134 or

people. Get your ticket from Kim Chambers today.

comeback. Down by six goals at half time, we knew
we could still have a win if we ran harder and got our
hands on the ball. That’s what we did, kicking five
straight in the third quarter, but some wise heads
from North Heidelberg were able to settle towards the
end of the third. The fourth quarter saw Hurstbridge
dominate the play but with bad kicking resulted in
eight behinds and snuffed out any revival.
UNDER-19:
The top of the table clash against St Mary’s saw our
boys pretty confident going into the game. With a
pretty tight first quarter, it looked like it was going to be
an arm-wrestle all day. Unfortunately, our boys weren’t
up for the fight and were outclassed by a hungrier St
Mary’s team going, down by some 84 points. Another
strong performance by Joel Dale, Tieren Barbera and
Jake Orchard who worked hard all day.
MEMBERSHIPS: Are available now. Please log on to the
Hurstbridge website for details.
SOCIAL FUNCTIONS: By the looks of the photos, the
boys had a good night at the Boys Night Out function.

MERNDA
Pick the best result: Mernda taking the four points away at
Lalor or Melbourne taking the four points away at Adelaide.
SENIORS: Terrific victory in ugly conditions. It felt like
Lalor had the better of the play at times but we had the
kicking boots on. I guess it was just an ugly game with
only nine goals kicked but heck you’d take that over
losing pretty in the end. Smitty and Mitchy kicked two
goals each and DB was probably the best man on the
ground with his run off half back, alongside JB who’s
got the ball on a string the last couple of weeks. Big
game today.
RESERVES: Last time we played them I got on the
scoresheet, but that wasn’t going to be the same this
time around unless I invaded the field and that wasn’t
going to happen. Things being the same, Mernda
consolidated a top two spot with a 120-point victory
over the Bloods. Joshy Delaney had plenty of the ball
and while I didn’t exactly catch all the game I think
Leppa and Col kicked a few. Impressive start to the
season for the reserves.
FITZROY STARS
These nail-biters are absolutely no good for our
supporters or coaches, however it does show how
much our boys want to win and that’s something which
can’t be taught.
SENIORS: Panton Hill came to play and showed us how
important it is to prepare and be committed as a unit.
They put their heads over the ball and were courageous
with their efforts to kick the ball under pressure in
atrocious conditions. We were behind all game and
didn’t hit the front until 20 seconds from the end, due
to a fantastic kick from our debutant, Maxy Maynard.
Although we didn’t play well it was so important to
get the points because of the obvious closeness of the
competition.
RESERVES: Had a lot more success, accounting for
Panton Hill by more than 20 goals. Our boys were on
top from the start and were never threatened with
Hoody, Djye and Reece playing some terrific footy. Big
Lukey blew countless opportunities but thankfully JK
was there to mop up and snag a lazy six.
38
THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
UNDER-19: Easily our most disappointing performance
so far. We just didn’t have the right mindset and Lalor
took advantage of it. Johnno was probably our best
player, the first time I’ve ever said that even when he
was just chipscabbing whilst we played park footy and
school footy. Golledge was once again very good and
I thought Cara was another who tried very hard. Big
game against South this week.
TODAY: We’re at home with a 2nd v 3rd showdown for
the second week running. The 19s kick us off with their
game against South Morang before the reserves and
seniors play the Stars. Three wins will hold us in great
stead!
SOCIAL FUNCTION: May 17 – Get out your uggies and
flannie shirt and come on down to Bogan Bingo at the
club. Tickets are $35 per person which includes a meal.
Compulsory night for players, see Arcus
CONGRATULATIONS: To Les and Jannelle Adams on
the arrival of their baby daughter Hannah.
SPONSOR OF THE WEEK: Blue Tongue Pizza
NETBALL: Not such a great Friday night with only
one side getting up. Unfortunately our A graders were
over-run by Diamond Creek 51-35, our B graders were
beaten by North Heidelberg 31-22, our C graders were
the only highlight for us winning 34-20 against Lalor
and our D graders went down to Lalor 29-24.
THIS WEEK: We venture out to Mernda for a shot at
going second on the ladder. Mernda at home is never
an easy task, especially when there is so much at stake.
Both sides will have to prepare for a finals-like contest
and do everything they can to take home the points.
TOOL OF THE WEEK: Once again big Lukey features.
Saturday night was a great celebration for our
president’s 70th with everyone enjoying themselves
and the occasion.
Alf’s family spoke words of love and admiration for a
wonderful man and it was with great regret that Chin
took it upon himself to say a few words on behalf of the
club. He then proceeded to a venue in Fitzroy where he
danced like a lunatic. Not such a great night for the G
Train and un-backable odds for the Downlow.

PANTON HILL
Today we play Diamond Creek for the Graham ‘Spud’
Cannon Cup for the first time since 2009. Spud played
for both clubs and served as the Creekers’ president.
Welcome to all Spud’s family and friends.
SENIORS: There’d be nothing wrong with thinking Panton
Hill was in control for the whole game, but the last three
minutes against the Fitzroy Stars. We applied terrific
pressure on the Stars, so much so that for much of the
first half, it was a real effort for them to get the ball inside
forward 50. Unmatched, Brett Middleton was all over the
ground attacking and defending and was supported by
Reid Staples’ solid attack in the clinches, Shane McLagan
pinch hitting around the packs and Tait Forster ripping
out big tackles. Jonty Rushton is finding lots of the ball
and making good decisions, Will Box was silky yet again,
Tyler Scarce was the typical leader and Josh Chapman was
probably the real nightmare for Fitzroy. Three minutes to
go, and a couple of Redback indiscretions and some telling
opposition goals won the game for the home team. The
Hills have proven they’re more than competitive in this
DIAMOND CREEK
Today all three sides make the trip to Panton Hill, with
the seniors looking for their first win and the reserves
and under-19s looking to continue their good form.
SENIORS:
There’s only one way to go after you have endured a
start to the season like we have. That is to work harder
in games and on the track during the week. When we
decide to do that, there is no doubt we will be ultra
competitive against any opposition. Well done to
Epping for displaying to us what a committed bunch of
guys can achieve, no matter what personal is sent out
on the field. Best Players: H. Kavanagh, C. Moloney, M.
Johnson, B. Gutterson, R. Burton, L. de Pyle.
RESERVES:
Another very good performance by all which enabled
the team to record a big victory. Keep working hard,
pushing each other to play in the main game and grab
your chance when giving. Andrew Gray booted eight
goals in the big win, while Michael McKenzie kicked five.

competition but games need to be put away. The boys will
be desperate for a win against Diamond Creek.
RESERVES: Another tough day with Fitzroy Stars stretching
their lead at every break. Newcomer Matt Searle was our
best, with support from Leigh Scully, Carson Dawson, Brett
Aldred, Luke Morse and Anthony Kidd. Things don’t get
any easier today but a big effort is expected.
UNDER 19: Came away with another substantial loss
after being in the game for the large majority. Our third
quarter was pleasing as we looked to be over running
South Morang, but late in the quarter some costly
turnovers swung the game back in their favour. Scott
Thompson was best, along with captain Jackson Mill,
Daniel Burleigh and Daniel Freeman.
PRESIDENT’S LUNCH: Welcome to our sponsors and
special guests at the Presidents Lunch at Wellers today.
We hope you enjoy the twilight match.
PAST PLAYERS DAY: Will be held on the home match
against Hurstbridge on May 31. Drinks and lunch
during from 12pm for $30. Speak to Chris Cahir
on 0402 427 255.
UNDER-19:
Well done on a good win against a side who had a fair
dinkum crack. Yet we still have plenty of improvement
in us if we have the ‘want’ to work hard. Best Players:
T. Cleary, D. Shallard, T. Sheppard, A. Dao, C. Honey, J.
Wingrave.

Division 3 – Preview
WEST HEADING NORTH
by Doug Long
Round 4 action in Division 3 saw big wins to
Heidelberg West, Reservoir and Thomastown, with the
trio now occupying the top three spots on the ladder
after a month of football in 2014.
The Hawks, looking resplendent in maroon and gold
jumpers to commemorate their 1936-1985 sides,
brushed aside Parkside with ease at Heidelberg Park
and moved into second spot on the ladder.
The Devils, in their usual fashion, hit the scoreboard
early. Bryan Vance kicked the first two goals of the
game, then missed a gettable shot. The Hawks then
sprang into action, soon hit the front and went on
to win by 20 goals – the club’s biggest win in recent
memory.
Kyl Ewart kicked seven goals to move to third place
on the goal kicking table, while James McLeanBrunton and captain Dan Bailey continued their
strong early season form. Youngsters from both
teams entertained the crowd. Mitchell Reeve kicked
two majors for Heidelberg West – the second one
from 60 metres out from near the grandstand.
Soon after, Parkside’s Brandon Walters had scored two
of his own, both on the run, which were a highlight
in an otherwise gloomy day for the visiting fans.
Putting a further sour note on the loss, the Devils lost
Stefano Capogreco to a significant leg injury during
the second term.
Reservoir bounced back strongly from its Round
3 shocker against Thomastown with a resounding
victory over Watsonia at A.K. Lines Reserve.
Unlike the previous week, the Mustangs jumped out
of the blocks early. Toby O’Meara proved a handful
and had three goals in the first quarter. Nick Hearn
was then moved on to O’Meara and held him to one
goal thereafter.
But by that stage the Mustangs were away and never
looked back. With Ryan Docherty’s penetrating
kicking out of defence and Daniel Couwenberg
controlling the outer wing, Reservoir drew away to
win by 50 points.
Assistant coach Leon Edwards was happy the
Mustangs were able to move the ball quickly. He was
pleased that Brendon Meroli, normally a forward,
44
THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
played down back and blanketed dangerous Saint
Nick Gaylor, who was coming off a five-goal haul
against Parkside in Round 3.
Watsonia coach Damian Zanic was pleased with his
move of David Gooding from defence to attack. But
he lamented missing simple chances and giving away
some easy goals, all of which contributed significantly
to the loss.
Thomastown strengthened its grip on top spot with
an impressive win over South Morang at Main Street
Reserve. The Bears trailed by a point at half time, but
the home team forged clear with a 13-goal to two
second half to win their fourth game from four starts.
Michael Di Battista was the unlikely top goal scorer
for the Bears with five, while Tristan Harrower and
David Folino continued their great starts to the year.
In his first senior game for the season, Russell Elder
was the Lions’ best – with club coming off a 21-day
break between their Round 2 win over Heidelberg
West and Round 4 match against the Bears.
South Morang now finds itself outside the four and
hosts St Mary’s in a crunch match at Mill Park Lakes
Reserve. Both teams had high hopes for 2014, but have
only one win each from their opening three games.
Reservoir has a chance to consolidate its spot in the
top four when it plays Parkside at Pitcher Park. The
Mustangs will be hot favourites to move to 3-1, but
one of Parkside’s four wins in 2013 was an impressive
35-point win over the Mustangs, when Darren
Gresham booted 11 second-half goals for the Devils.
The match of the day is at Main Street Reserve
where Thomastown hosts Heidelberg West. Few
would have expected these two teams to occupy the
top two positions on the ladder after four rounds,
particularly after the Hawks claimed the 2013
wooden spoon on the back of just one win.
The Bears will be favourites, with a two-game break
plus 72 percentage points on the Hawks. They last
met in the final round of 2013, with Thomastown
notching a 10-goal win. But Heidelberg West is now
a much better side – and this will be a great test of
the level of their improvement.
Sitting in fourth place, with two wins and two losses,
Watsonia sits out its first bye of the year.

Division 3
THOMASTOWN
We found ourselves back at Main Street against South
Morang and what a day it proved to be.
SENIORS:
Winter came on the stroke of 2pm as we did battle
with South Morang and it proved to be a game of two
halves. The first half was disappointing by the standards
we had set so far this season and Deano called for a
big response at half time. Like all good teams, respond
we did and our second half was emphatic, particularly
given the conditions. Now we find ourselves in a top of
the table clash against a resurgent Heidelberg West.
RESERVES:
After two disappointing results, the reserves needed
a big response. To our credit, we responded to put
together a great four-quarter performance. We
now need to harness this confidence and use it as a
springboard into the rest of the season.
NETBALL:
Firstly, well done to the section 7 team on recording
their first win for the season. Unfortunately the other
three sides were unable to record wins but the work
ethic from the girls is never in question.
HEIDELBERG WEST
Last week’s past player reunion was a tremendous
success with the heritage jumpers receiving great feedback amongst our supporters and past players. On behalf
of the committee, we wish to thank our supporters who
braved the elements and supported the club.
SENIORS:
The boys really took pride in wearing the old colours
and it showed in their performance, recording a 20goal win over Parkside. A real feature of the seniors
play was their clean disposal in wet conditions and
an even spread of the load across all lines. Big Easy
was the standout, kicking seven sausage rolls in his
best game for the club. The win moves us into second
place on the ladder and sets us up for a challenging
three weeks of football that sees us play three away
games in succession. The run starts this week with
a top of the table clash against the undefeated
Thomastown. No doubt Dekka will have the boys
cherry ripe for the challenge.
46
THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
JUNIORS:
Our under 11s and under 16s had losses last week but
were gallant in defeat.
This week, the U/9s are against Northcote away. The
U/11s and U/16 fixtures will be confirmed after grading
has been completed.
AROUND THE LAIR: Well done to Claire Consiglio
on playing her 50th game of netball for the club last
weekend. Claire has been an invaluable member of the
team both on and off the field. Well deserved Claire.
BEAR TALK – JOE COLACI:
- Favourite Food: Chicken parmigiana, but without the
cheese, sauce and bread crumb – therefore chicken.
- Best football moment: The 2007 Reserves Premiership
and the time that I gave off a handball. Actually, I don’t
think I have ever handballed, so just the Premiership
- Favourite number:
Has to be 6# (and yes, that is how I sign it)
- Most embarrassing moment: The day I thought I
would be cool by Neknominating a Vodka Cruiser.
I threw the empty bottle over my head and
accidentally knocked out my Rottweiler.
- BLUEBOY
RESERVES:
Marris recorded his first victory as reserves coach
with a comprehensive 101-point win. Aside from the
margin, the most pleasing thing to come from the
game was the manner in which the boys went about
their footy and Marris’s game style is starting to sink
in. Andrew challenged a few guys to step up pre-game
and the response was excellent with every bloke
in a West jumper beating their opponent. Brae was
rewarded for his hard work on the track and kicked six.
Meanwhile, Benny Marris, Aaza Smith, Westy, Jordy
Allen, Tully, Squizz, Griffo and Kev were brilliant across
the four quarters.
80s PARTY:
Following this week’s game we will be hosting our
first compulsory player function with a Derek Shawinspired 80s themed party. Dust off your denims, fluro
clothing and your big mullets and come down to the
Dave Fisher Clubrooms for a night of great retro fun.

PARKSIDE
This week we’re back at Pitcher Park again to play
Reservoir. With a few players returning from injury and
suspension it should be a good contest in front of the
loyal Devils supporters.
SENIORS:
The seniors were never really in the game against a
pumped-up Hawks outfit, who put on a good display for
their past players day. Topper again led from the front
putting in another great performance, while Maximum
Wood and Chrissy D both showed their class in their
first senior games for the year. Even reserves coach Abe
“some sort of Spanish surname” K pulled on the boots to
show that he’s still got some talent in that aging body.
Young stars Handsy and Brando both played great
games again showing that there is a good future in store
for the Devils, with Brando slotting two consecutive
goals on the run during the second quarter to give us
the momentum for a short while. Unfortunately that
RESERVOIR
Today we travel to Parkside who are yet to open there
account but from reports they have been in all games
for at least a half. We expect a hard contest but the
Mustangs must come away with the four points.
SENIORS: Responded in the best way possible against
Watsonia. Won the contested ball, ran, and took the
game on. The defence was outstanding. Best players:
Daniel Couwenberg, Cameron Rooney, Jason Dal Santo,
David McGregor, Joel Buckley, Ben Meroli.
RESERVES: A big win over Watsonia. Another seven
changes to the side from last week but as the coach
says “when you get your chance, it’s up to you” as there
were 15 who missed out when picking the side last
Thursday. Best players: Kent Beaumont, Kael Beaumont,
Kelsey Clayton, Marc Defelice, Brent Kreitling, Colin
McPhee.
CONGRATULATIONS: To Mark Pirro who today plays his
50th game. The dual Reserves best and fairest winner is
a great team player with a good left foot.

for your membership ticket.

momentum didn’t last, and there weren’t many other
positives to be taken out of the game as the Hawks were
simply too good all game long.
RESERVES:
It was another tough game for the reserves coming
up against a much improved Heidelberg West. The
boys gave their all for the entire game to their credit
but we’re unable to keep pace with the Hawks. Rhys
played another good game, leading from the front as
always, while the returning Shaun added some class
up forward, and “that old bloke” Schwabl showed that
he still has a trick or two up his well-worn sleeves. And
after another near best on ground performance, Will
“Bruce Lee” Lay would have to be the bookies early
favourite for the B&F.
SOCIAL: The annual trivia night is on Friday, May 23
(bye round) at the Grandview Hotel. Everyone book a
table early for what is always a great night. Free drinks
included with the price of the ticket. To book get in

SOUTH MORANG
This week we welcome St Mary’s to South Morang.
SENIORS:
Following our Round 4 against Thomastown, well, some
things are better left not said. We better ensure we stick
fat and graft out a win and get our season back on track
against St Mary’s this week.
RESERVES:
Round 4 against Thomastown and ditto for the reserves.
It’s time to show the real South Morang spirit guys and
make St Mary’s pay for last week’s performance. Get right
behind Gary, do the right things and success, whatever
that may be, will come our way.
UNDER-19:
Another great win, this time against Panton Hill. This week
we head to Mernda and look forward to playing together
after a solid month’s training together on the track and
getting some belief in our game plan. Keep winning
and getting the confidence and we can look forward to
this team really putting some impressive performances
together in the coming weeks.
ST MARY’S
After a week off we look forward to reacquainting
ourselves with our old foes South Morang.
UNDER-19: The under-19s didn’t get a rest and after
getting over a very determined Diamo the week before,
ventured up the road a little further to Hurstbridge.
The game was pretty tight in the first with both sides’
forcing backline turnovers. However, we were able to
break the shackles in the second led by 28 points at
half time. The second half was very strange as they only
posted one more behind, whereas we managed a very
inaccurate 7.15. A good win nonetheless against the
second-placed side.
NETBALL: We wound back the clock and were treated
to some past netball magic last Friday. The A team’s fillin player was Jess Beaton’s mum, Tracey. With pin-point
accuracy and one-handed technique, Tracey showed
all the “youngins” how it’s done, shooting goal after
goal. Also filling in at WA was Jess’s sister Stephanie. I
think we lost count how often the ball came out of the
backline by J Beaton to S Beaton and onto T Beaton
for a perfect play. BTW the girls had a good win over

WOMENS:
A great performance by an undermanned South Morang
side in their first game in Ballarat. Let’s ensure all players
and supporters get to the ground on Sunday and support
Maurice and the girls.
SOCIAL:
A fantastic night was had at the Comedy Night. The
comedians were very funny, with one notable exception
the fifth comedian standing on the bin near the bar! This
week it’s our first Ladies Day from 1:00pm to 3:00pm.
$20 gets you entry. Let’s make it a very enjoyable day
for the girls, then its Band Night starting at 7:00pm with
Andy Failla and his band playing until late. Let’s ensure all
players, supporters, parents and, most off all, our ladies
stay around and enjoy a great night after a good day. $10
entry for players and male supporters free entry for the
ladies to the Band Night.
THANK YOU: To all the senior and under-19 players
for coming and supporting the juniors on Sunday. It’s
fantastic to see and keep it up. The kids get a buzz out of
seeing you there. GO SOUTHY
the Power 37-16. Thanks girls for all your help but how
much truth is there that the other two sisters now want
to get involved as well? The B team had a fantastic
tussle against Greensborough and ended up with an
18-all draw.
RESERVES: A good win two rounds back against West
where it was a real struggle for three quarters before
kicking away in the last. This week we need to be on our
toes up against the Lions.
SENIORS: Taking nothing away from the Hawks, we
were terrible two weeks back and will be looking for
a big improvement today. With both clubs looking
for their second today, only one can be the victor. The
other will be destined for some tough nights on the
track.
SOCIAL: May 10 is Burra’s in the Caribbean & iPod
Shuffle Night. $10 for guys and $5 for chicks.
May 17 is our annual Ladies Lunch.
See Pauline ASAP (0419 522 168) for tix at $25.

COMETS TOO GOOD FOR NORTH
by Lauren Bordin
Bundoora has thrashed North Heidelberg by 21 goals,
as it defeated North in all areas of the court in Round 3
of Section 1 action.
In the opening quarter North Heidelberg failed to
effectively get the ball into its attacking circle, as
misthrows allowed Bundoora to bring the ball to the
other side of the court. Strong defensive pressure from
the Comets’ defence which caused these errors and
created turnover opportunities, was complimented by
good movement in the goal circle by shooters Elly Castles
and Chloe Wilson.
Despite holding a seven-goal lead at quarter time
Bundoora made several changes to its lineup, bringing
on new goal attack Tayla Hardiman to pair with Wilson
in the goal circle.
A changed lineup didn’t effect the Comets’ flow, with
their pace through the court quickening in the second
quarter. Michelle Mallhouse’s run through the midcourt
was important for North, as a fantastic intercept
stemming from superb reading of the play resulted
in a goal for her team.
CREEK CONTINUE WINNING FORM
by Lauren Bordin
A two-week break in the Northern Netball Leauge
didn’t have an affect on Diamond Creek’s match fitness,
as it ran out 16-goal winners against Fitzroy Stars in
Section 1.
In the early minutes of the game neither team could be
separated until a pass that went out of court in Fitzroy’s
attacking third allowed Diamond Creek to break and
take the lead.
From here the Creekers started firing and piled on five
consecutive goals.
The Stars didn’t let the Creekers four-goal lead at
the end of the first quarter come easy, as following
Diamond Creek’s strong period of play, Fitzroy scored
four of the last six goals of the quarter. Diamond Creek’s
pace was excellent as its quick movement of the ball
through short passes proved effective in getting the
ball to its attacking circle. It was the Creekers’ ability to
score quick goals, which allowed them to keep their
lead, as short periods of momentum again saw each
team add on consecutive goals to the scoreboard.
THE NORTHERNER
— The Northern Football League Record
Despite turnovers also occurring in Bundoora’s
attacking half this quarter, North Heidelberg was not
able to use these opportunities and trailed by 13 goals
at half-time.
Intercepts were occurring often in the third quarter, as
the strong defensive pair of Liz Edwards and Shannon
McLean was able to stop North’s ball from entering its
attacking circle.
Bundoora wing attack Jacinta Tonkin and centre Natalie
Ognenis used quick and short passes into the goal circle
to help the Comets extend their lead to 21 goals going
into the final quarter.
The last quarter saw more of the same from North
Heidelberg as inaccurate passes and shots being off
target saw it not make the most of opportunities.
However a late period of play saw North Heidelberg
string together four goals in a row as both teams scored
eight goals in the last term, keeping the final margin at
21 goals.
Final score:
Bundoora Comets 1 (50) def North Heidelberg 1 (29)
The opening minutes of the second half were all
Diamond Creek as its speedy movement into the goal
circle was enjoyable to watch.
The Stars’ defensive pressure that had been evident all
game, became more noticeable as Fitzroy’s defenders
caused many turnovers in the third quarter.
Following an even second half of the quarter Diamond
Creek took a lead of nine goals into the final term.
Fitzroy’s keeper Jessica Bamblett continued her solid
game in defence, however Diamond Creek’s defenders
remained equally strong in the Stars’ attacking third.
As had been the case the whole game, each team had
periods of play in which they broke the opposition’s
centre pass.
Diamond Creek started the fourth quarter with five
consecutive goals, which were fought back by Fitzroy
also scoring five goals in a row. However Diamond
Creek’s lead, which they built steadily, meant Fitzroy’s
presses never put it in danger, as the Creekers won 51-35.

JUNIOR REVIEW – ROUND 4
by Ben Pascuzzi
A look back at last weekend’s junior results in the final
round of junior grading for the 2014 season.
In the Under 18 Girls competition, Darebin Falcons
beat the previously undefeated Diamond Creek Girls
by six points, the first time the sides have met since
last year’s Grand Final. The Falcons now sit third
on the ladder. South Morang remains undefeated
after it easily beat the Lalor Stars, breaking the 200
points barriers as it went on to record a massive win.
Meanwhile, Epping eased by the bottom of the table
Hurstbridge and Montmorency was too good for
Mernda by 44 points.
In the Under 17 Blue competition, Diamond Creek
got over the line by 11 points over Research in a tight
contest at Coventry Oval, with the Creekers holding
the lead at each break. Another close encounter saw
Epping beat South Morang by just under a goal,
beating the Lions by four points in a very tight contest.
West Preston was also able to record a win after it
beat the previously undefeated Montmorency quite
convincingly. The Roosters’ 41-point win secured
second spot on the ladder.
Diamond Creek recorded its first win in the Under 17
Red competition, as it proved far too good for Wallan
in a 113-point result. In a much closer affair, Eltham
beat Whittlesea by 10 points to move into second spot
on the table. Hurstbridge was the other big winner
from the round. The Bridges sit in first place on the
ladder after keeping Mill Park to only two behinds in a
triple-digit win.
The Under 16 Blue competition sees two teams
remain undefeated after the opening four rounds.
South Morang and Mill Park both sit atop the
ladder, after South Morang defeated Eltham by 78
points, whilst Mill Park beat Research by 38 points.
Montmorency moves up to third on the ladder after it
beat Epping in a tight contest by two goals.
Epping continued its winning start in the Under 15
Blue competition. The Blues outran Greensborough in
the second half to win by 68 points, despite trailing at
half time. The result left Greensborough without a win
in the grading rounds. West Preston was the other big
winner after it beat Wallan by 33 points. This was the
Roosters’ second win a row and now sees them sit in

second on the ladder after South Morang had the bye.
Research continued its dominance in the Under 15
Red competition, beating Montmorency in a very tight
contest at Montmorency Oval. The Magpies led for
most of the day but a late Search charge saw them get
over the line and remain undefeated in season 2014.
Diamond Creek easily beat Keon Park to maintain
its winning form and keep itself in third place on
the ladder. Eltham and Mill Park also recorded wins,
beating Kinglake and Bundoora Park respectively.
The other winner of the round was Yarrambat,
who beat Whittlesea by 43 points at the Whittlesea
Showgrounds and now sits in second on the ladder.
South Morang kept its unbeaten run alive in the
Under 14 Blue competition after beating previously
undefeated Eltham by 71 points. Mill Park bounced
back from its Round 3 loss to Whittlesea, by accounting
for Wallan by 41 points. Montmorency and Laurimar
Black were the other winners for the round, both
recording big wins, with the Magpies beating
Whittlesea by 66 points and Laurimar Black beating
West Preston by 50 points.
In the Under 13 Blue competition, Montmorency
recorded its second win on the trot by beating Mill
Park by 30 points. The result moved the Magpies into
third spot, behind Whittlesea who had the bye. The
other winners in the competition were South Morang
Blue, after it continued its unbeaten streak, beating
Epping by 32 points to remain atop the ladder.
The Under 12 Blue competition sees Eltham atop
the table after keeping its unbeaten start intact. The
Panthers were able to keep Diamond Creek to a single
behind in their big win. Research was able to hold out
South Morang Blue by 10 points as it moved into third
spot on the ladder. Wallan was the other winner after it
accounted for Greensborough by 51 points.
And, Yarrambat remained unbeaten in the Under
11 Blue competition, beating Greensborough by 64
points in Round 4. Epping beat Eltham by 20 points as
it bounced back from its previous week’s loss to the
Bats. The other winners were South Morang Blue, who
handed Montmorency its first loss of the season.
