The Rotary Club of Taipei will be celebrating its 62nd Charter Anniversary this early autumn. It will be
a good season in Taiwan with the heat of summer fading out and cool breezes starting to come in.

October is Rotary Vocational Service Month
Vocational Service focuses on:
Adherence to and promotion of the highest ethical standards in all occupations, including fair
treatment of employers, employees, associates, competitors, and the public.
The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, not just those that are pursued by
Rotarians.
The contribution of your vocational talents to solving the problems of society and meeting the needs
of the community.
During October, Rotarians are encouraged to focus on this important avenue of Rotary service. Discussions
on vocational service can lead to projects that not only develop the ethical consciousness and vocational
skills of Rotarians but also the talents within their communities. Vocational Service Month is an opportunity to
begin year-long vocational service activities, ranging from Rotary discussions to awards to community
projects. Following are some suggested activities to undertake during Vocational Service Month:
Devote the first meeting in October to examining the second Avenue of Service, including The Four-Way
Test and The Declaration of Rotarians in Business and Professions. After expanding members’ awareness,
solicit their input in planning projects for the remainder of the year.
Introduce a “mini-classifications talk” series in which each member gives a five-minute talk on his or
her vocation. Schedule one speaker for the beginning of each meeting until everyone has made a
presentation. The purpose of these talks is to promote vocational awareness among Rotarians and
help them recognize the worthiness of all useful occupations.
Present a vocational award to someone in the community who has exemplified outstanding
professional achievement while maintaining very high ethical standards. Promote the presentation
within the community, and consider making it an annual October event.
Invite experts to give a presentation on the vocational needs of the community and develop a
project in response to those needs. Possible projects could focus on developing character,
providing career information to youth, mentoring small businesses, or organizing workshops that
provide employees with new skills.
Encourage Club members to put their vocational skills to work as Rotary Volunteers. Volunteer
opportunities are available on ProjectLINK, a valuable resource that lists many vocational projects that
clubs and districts can also choose to support financially or with donated goods. Project LINK also includes
examples of successful vocational service projects that Rotary Clubs can model as they plan their own
activities.

The Second Annual Amcham Taichung KIDZ Charity Gala
President Story,
Thank you so much for allowing me a few minutes today to talk about our Kidz Charity and our upcoming
event.
I just thought I'd write a quick note to recap what I spoke about briefly today.
AmCham Taichung is currently involved in an ongoing fundraising effort to support the Hsiang Shang
Social Welfare Foundation. Hsiang Shang Social Welfare Foundation includes the Christian Herald
Orphanage and the Daniel A. Poling Babies Home. We provide two services for the children at these
homes. First, we provide milk and juice to every child to help ensure they are receiving the vitamins and
minerals they need to grow. Also, we are working to provide orphaned students at the Christian Herald
Orphanage with the funds to complete their high-school education, as government education subsidies
for these students stop at the age of 16. To see more about the Hsiang Shang Social Welfare Foundation,

Throughout the year, we have several events to raise money for the AmCham Kidz Charity: The Kidz Chili
Cookoff, the Whose Travel book exchange, The AmCham/TIGs Golf Tournament, The Annual Charity
Dinner Gala, The Kidz Walkathon. 100% of proceeds of these events go to the Kidz Charity. Last year we
raised a total of NT$730,000 for Kidz, and unfortunately it's still not enough to ensure that all of the children
at the Christian Herald Orphanage will have the funds to receive the High School education that they
deserve. We have everyone covered this year, but as many of the children who were orphaned in the
9/21 earthquake grow into High School age the number of orphans we are trying to help is set to grow
every year for the next several years.
The Annual Kids Dinner Gala is truly a wonderful night. This year, it will be held on Saturday, August 21, at
7:00 p.m. at the Taichung Windsor Hotel, 4th Floor ballroom. It is the biggest social event of the year. There
will be live jazz, an 11-course dinner, an open bar, a silent auction and lots of fun. A lot of local corporate
heads and business owners will be there. Taichung City Mayor Jason Hu and Director William Stanton from
AIT are scheduled to be there, if their busy schedules permit [Deputy Mayor, James Hsiao and Deputy AIT
Director, Eric Madison are confirmed to attend in their stead, if they cannot].
Also, if you would like to stay overnight, The Windsor Hotel is offering all guests to our Dinner Gala an
excellent discount. The normal rate for a night’s stay is NT$8,800, but for dinner guests, the rate is
discounted to NT$3,520.
And the best part about this event is it's free! Guests are only asked to donate whatever they wish. All
proceeds go to the Kidz Charity foundation. But because the Kidz Dinner Gala is by invitation-only, we ask
that everyone attending RSVP at least 3 days before the event date.
It should be a fantastic evening and we'd be honored if you, your wife and any guests you wish to invite,
would join us in this event.

place when, or at which, it’s too
late to change your mind about
what you’re doing and alter your
course of action. The term comes
from flying, as explained in the
Journal of the Royal Aeronautical
Society in 1941:
This three-engined operation data

Laymen are inevitably intrigued
by this fatalistic expression. As

a designation of that limit-point
of departure, and beyond which

The limiting factor is most likely
to be the fuel supply, but it can
also be whether the plane has
gone more than half way on its
projected journey.
