A message from the President
The Community College of Rhode Island Department
of Athletics, its student-athletes, coaches and support
staff represent some of the best of what the college has
to offer. Each and every season, CCRI student-athletes
put on the Knights uniform, step onto the court, field
or track and compete. They represent the college not
only through their performance, but also in spirit. Their
accomplishments, based on a commitment to academics
and athletics, make us proud.
During the 2013-14 academic year, many studentathletes represented CCRI with distinction at the national
level. Several teams were represented at regional,
district and national level competitions.
These experiences are more than just wins and losses in the record books.
They are examples of CCRI student-athletes achieving great things on and off the
field. In the classroom, they discover a new subject, a career field and a love of
learning. In athletics, they acquire the discipline and commitment it takes to reach
their goals. Under the guidance of knowledgeable and caring coaches, they learn
the values of camaraderie, commitment to a common goal and how to win or lose
with grace.
If you are considering CCRI as a prospective student-athlete, I encourage you to
explore what we have to offer academically and athletically.

A message from the Director Of Athletics
Athletics is not about winning. Rather, it is about testing one’s character to the limits; to dig deep when
the chips are down and the time on the clock is running out. As Olympic wrestler Dan Gable once said,
“Gold medals aren’t really made of gold. They’re made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy
called guts.”
The Community College of Rhode Island Department of Athletics provides countless opportunities
for student-athletes to better themselves and face challengeswith strength and resolve. While they are
not competing for a gold medal, the lessons they learn being part of a team and competing are a valuable
component of their CCRI experience. They are lessons that prepare them to succeed in the classroom,
a professional career and beyond.
CCRI athletic teams boast a tradition of excellence with more than 5,300 victories, 213 All-Americans
and 711 All-Region selections. During the 2013-14 academic year, several teams reached the playoffs in
their sport, representing the college at the regional, district and national levels. The foundation behind
those outstanding accomplishments is built on an academic support program and the dedication of CCRI
coaches.

ABOUT CCRI
The Community College of Rhode Island opened
its doors in 1964 with 325 students in temporary space on Promenade Street in Providence
as Rhode Island Junior College. Today, with four
campuses throughout the state, CCRI enrolls an
average of almost 18,000 credit students each
semester, making it the largest comprehensive
community college in New England. Thirty-three
percent of its students identify themselves as part
of a minority group, many of whom are the first
in their families to attend college.

degree and certificate programs in the arts, business, computer studies, engineering, health sciences, human services, liberal arts and science departments taught
by faculty who are experts in their field. Each year, Rhode Islanders fill more than
30,000 seats in our professional development, skill enhancement, job retraining
and noncredit personal enrichment courses offered by CCRI’s Center for Workforce and Community Education.
CCRI students are active participants in campus life and in the community. The
college offers a varsity athletic program with 12 sports and a diverse selection of
student clubs and organizations, including student government. Annually, students,
faculty and staff volunteer for a variety of Rhode Island nonprofit organizations,
making life better for those less fortunate.
Since its inception, CCRI has graduated more than 64,000 students, with 95 percent of them living and working in Rhode Island. The college is the No. 1 provider

The Flanagan Campus

Some CCRI teams play their home games at
nearby off-campus locations. The softball team
plays its home games at Winslow Park Field in
Warwick and the golf team competes and practices at Cranston Country Club. The coed tennis
team and the indoor and outdoor track teams
travel to their opponent’s site or a neutral site
for matches.

CCRI’s Student-Athlete Academic
Support Program (SAASP)
WHERE DO THEY GO
FROM HERE?
The Student-Athlete Academic Support Program at the Community College of
Rhode Island provides a support system for academic success in college. This mandatory program prepares student-athletes for transfer to four-year institutions
where they can continue their education and athletic careers.
During the first semester of their freshman year, student-athletes are required to
complete academic placement tests in reading, writing and mathematics and enroll
in a one-credit CCRI student success course. The program requires student-athletes to attend two, one-hour study sessions each week during the semester, including the off-season, at the college’s academic success centers. The Department
of Athletics compliance officer schedules session times for each student-athlete
and monitors their progress every five weeks during the semester. The program
also provides daily academic advising, counseling and tutorials as well as transfer
counseling.
Prospective student-athletes are encouraged to visit staff, coaches and advisors at
CCRI’s Warwick and Lincoln campuses to learn more about the program and the

STUDENT-ATHLETES ACHIEVE ACADEMIC SUCCESS
IN 2013-14
Many student-athletes were honored for their academic achievements in the
2013-14 academic year. Their successes included 26 student-athletes making the
dean’s list in the fall and spring semesters. In addition, two earned scholarships to
Division II Southern Connecticut State University and many others will be moving
on to play sports at DI and DIII schools.
Twenty-nine student-athletes from the Class of 2013 earned associate degrees,
eight with honors. Twenty-six of them will be transferring to four-year institutions like Southern Connecticut State University, Newbury College, Rhode Island
College, Lasell College, Bryant University and Johnson & Wales University.

An overview of CCRI athletics
past and present
The Community College of Rhode Island is home to one of the Ocean State’s
finest and most successful intercollegiate athletic programs. Since its inception in
1965, the CCRI program has long been considered a front-runner in New England
community college and junior college athletic circles.
The basketball, baseball, tennis, volleyball, cross country, golf and soccer teams have
all been nationally ranked. The 2002 women’s soccer team captured the school’s
first national championship, while a number of other squads, including men’s basketball and women’s soccer, were national runners-up. With more than 5,300 victories,
213 All-Americans, 129 Region XXI championships and 711 All-Region selections,
CCRI leads the way among all New England community colleges.
Great coaching has been the key to CCRI’s success. From the athletic department’s
humble beginnings in 1965, the school has always featured legendary coaches. From
Hall of Fame athletic director and men’s basketball coach Vin Cullen to baseball
coaches Whitey Fell and Art Pontarelli, tennis coach Ray Carr and volleyball coach
Gail Davis, the tradition of great coaches and top-flight teaching has extended
through theyears and continues through the present day.
The college holds membership in the National Junior College Athletic Association
and is an associate member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

With a strong complement of returning veterans
combined with a quality crop of freshmen recruits,
the 2015 CCRI Knights’ baseball team has set its
sights on a return to Enid, Oklahoma, home of the
NJCAA Division II World Series. In order to accomplish this goal, the team has been working extremely
hard for the season with a seven-week training
program. According to head coach Ken Hopkins,
“The Knights have a wealth of depth and experience
at every position. This should lead to a very exciting
season.”
The Knights will be led by returning veterans and
co-captains, TJ Boyajian (Warwick, R.I.) in right field
and Eddie Apice (North Kingstown, R.I.) in center
field along with being a top left handed pitcher in the
region. Coach Hopkins has said, “These two players
are like having two more coaches in the room and
they are counted upon heavily to set an example of
how the team approaches its work ethic and preparation for the season.”
Returning players also include Austin Barry (North
Kingstown, R.I.) in left field and on the mound as well
as James Riley-Garnett (Newport, R.I.), both of whom
will be counted upon for their long ball prowess
and RBI production. Casey Mack (Trumbull, Conn.)
returns at third base and Mike Evans (Warwick, R.I.)
at first base. These players will give the team a strong,
experienced lineup at the corners. Sophomore
transfer, Diego Campos (Providence, R.I.) will provide
the Knights with many options as a designated hitter,
third base, outfielder and pitcher. Coach Hopkins
considers Campos to be the most important utility
player on the team because of his ability to play many
positions. According to Hopkins, “He also gives the
team many options with his bat as he is one of the
better offensive players on the roster.” Steve Adams
(Jacksonville, Fla.) also returns to the lineup as the
team’s catcher and provides a solid bat as well as
strong defense behind the plate.
Quality newcomers, Dave Hopkins (East Greenwich, R.I.), a transfer from URI, will start at second
base, and give the Knights an additional arm on the
mound. Hopkins will bat near the top of the order
to provide quality offense. The only position without
a veteran presence is shortstop, but coach Hopkins
has recruited two quality freshmen to fill the position.
Ramiel Rodriquez (Providence, R.I.) and Derek Estes
(Hyannis, Mass.) will share the shortstop duties.
For the first time in many years, the team has three
quality catchers that will share duties behind the
plate as well as help to keep a deep pitching staff
in shape. Along with Adams, Dan Autiello (Orlando,
Fla.), a transfer from Lake-Sumter State College and
freshman Edison Mercado (Providence, R.I.), a strong
hitting prospect, will compete until someone emerges
to hold down the job.
Recruited freshmen who will compete for playing
time include: Ryan Rotondo, a first team All-Stater
from Bishop Hendricken High School (Warwick, R.I.),
who will compete for time at second base and designated hitter and Brandon Escalante (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), a solid right fielder and lefty hitter. Colby
Ortega (Kissimmee, Fla.), a strong left handed hitter
will challenge Evans for playing time at first base
and Ernesto Figueroa (Providence, R.I.), a strong and
athletic centerfielder will see plenty of action when
Apice takes the mound.
According to coach Hopkins, success will come
from the reliance of the strength and depth of the

and Stew Braman (Middletown, R.I.) will lead a deep but inexperienced staff. Returning veterans
Ben Duarte (East Providence, R.I.) and Ryan Faria (Cranston, R.I.) will see innings, and their
experience brings a wealth of confidence to the team. Newcomers to the staff could be the key
to a very promising season as coach Hopkins has recruited some quality arms that still need to
be tested under pressure in key games. Jack Livingston (East Lyme, Conn.) and Tyler Lamonda
(Auburn, Mass.) are two highly touted recruits that will be relied upon to pitch some big games
for the Knights. The depth of the staff will also be counted upon to eat up many innings with
John Sikie (Cumberland, R.I.) Steve Noti (Warwick, R.I.), Heiker Feliz (Providence, R.I.) and Wally
Luna (Providence, R.I.) all competing for innings out of the bullpen with the potential to move
into the rotation. Apice, Hopkins, Garnett-Riley, Barry and Campos will also be counted on to
supply innings as needed in dual roles. Mike Gallagher (Stoughton, Mass.), a freshman transfer
from URI, has seen much success in practice and may move into the closer role out of the
bullpen.
The team has been working hard since the first week of September, playing a full 30-game fall
schedule, lifting weights and preparing in the off season. It is hoped that the hard work and dedication will be evident as the 2015 Knights set their sights on a return to Enid, Oklahoma. The
team will open their season once again at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational in Orlando,
Florida.

Head Coach

Ken Hopkins ’75 is the winningest coach in Community
College of Rhode Island baseball history. He has served as
head coach of the CCRI baseball team since 2001, compiling a record of 354-164-2.
Hopkins has had a number of successes as head coach.
Most recently he led the 2012 Knights to the NJCAA Division II World Series in Enid, Okla. The team finished the
season with a 33-13 record. Because of that success he
was named NJCAA and ABCA District Coach of the Year.
In March 2015, Hopkins received the Amby Smith Lifetime
Achievement Award from Words Unlimited. In addition,
he was inducted to the Rhode Island Baseball Coaches
Association Hall of Fame as the 2013 recipient of the Ben
Mondor Award for his contributions to the Rhode Island baseball community.
In 2005, Hopkins led the squad to a 27-7 record and No. 10 NJCAA national ranking. The team was NJCAA New England Division II Champions in 2001 and 2002 and
Hopkins was voted Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2002.
In addition to his experience at CCRI, Hopkins served as head coach of women’s
basketball and men’s baseball at Rhode Island College and as a coach in the Florida
Collegiate Summer League (FCSL). In 2008, he was the head coach of the FCSL’s
Sanford River Rats and in 2009 he served as head coach of the Winter Park Diamond
Dogs.
In college, Hopkins played for the Knights baseball squad and coach Whitey Fell
during the 1974 and 1975 seasons. He transferred to Rhode Island College, where he
played for coach Dave Stenhouse, during the 1976 and 1977 seasons.
Hopkins graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Rhode Island College and holds
a master’s degree in education from the University of New England. For the past 10
years, he has been a social studies teacher at Cranston High School East and previously served as athletic director for Cranston Public Schools from 1990-2001.
Hopkins resides in Cranston, R.I. with wife, Mary,

Raymond Tessaglia

Ray Tessaglia has
numerous years of
coaching experience
at the amateur and
Division I levels.
Fifteen years ago, he
reunited with Head
Coach Ken Hopkins, with whom he
teamed up to lead
women’s basketball
and men’s baseball
programs for many
years at Rhode Island College.
Tessaglia is the former head coach of the
men’s baseball team and former associate head
coach of the women’s basketball team at Rhode
Island College. His overall knowledge of the
game and teaching skills, coupled with his working familiarity with Hopkins, benefit the CCRI
baseball program.
Tessaglia lives in Providence, R.I. with his wife,
Janice, and daughter, Sydney.

Mark Andrews returns to
the CCRI baseball program
as an assistant coach for
his fourth season. Andrews,
who owns the Rhode Island
Diamond Baseball Academy in East Greenwich,
has more than 16 years of
coaching experience at the
local, travel, tournament,
American Legion, high
school and college levels.
He was a three-sport,
All-State athlete in football,
hockey and baseball at Warwick Veterans Memorial
High School.
For the past 13 seasons Andrews served as assistant
coach for the Moses Brown varsity baseball team. Last
year, he coached the Rhode Island Rays AAU Baseball
Club, an under-13 travel team. He previously served as
an assistant coach for New England Frozen Lemonade,
Warwick’s legion team, and Warwick’s youth baseball
programs.
Outside of baseball, Andrews works for the Providence School Department with special needs students.
He also works under the administration at Hope High
School and the Gang Unit of the Providence Police
Department.
Andrews is a resident of Warwick, R.I.
Kevin Rix
Assistant Coach, Pitching
Kevin Rix begins his fifth
season with the CCRI
baseball coaching staff. He
works with the Knights’
pitchers and assists in other
areas.
Rix previously served as
the head coach of the Warwick Connie Mack Baseball
League and as assistant
coach of the Warwick team
in the Rhode Island Amateur League. In 2000, he was
the assistant coach of the Pilgrim High School freshmen
baseball team. He also has served as an assistant coach
for Warwick Veterans High School.
Rix lives in Warwick, R.I. He has a son, Kevin, and a
daughter, Amanda.
Cody Ortega ’11

Ortega is a former CCRI
player who returns to the
Knights’ program to join
the coaching staff for his
second year as an assistant.
Ortega will help with statistics and assist with team
practices. Ortega lives in

SEASON SUMMARY
The CCRI Knights baseball team had an outstanding year, ending the season
competing for another Region XXI baseball championship in early May, playing
UConn-Avery Point (UCAP) in the championship series. The Knights won the
first game of the series, 8-0. In the second game, the Knights fought hard in a
game that lasted 10 innings, but fell 3-2, forcing a game three to be played. In the
final game of the series, the Knights lost 4-2, ending the team’s hopes of returning
to the College World Series. The Knights’ season ended with a 22-10 record.
Despite not finishing the season with a championship win, the Knights had
some great individual efforts throughout the season. The team did have some
individual performances that earned players All-Region XXI honors, and those
players included sophomores Eddie Apice, Ryan O’Dell, Jake Tillman and Jake
Waldren. In addition, Apice earned the award for Defensive Player of the Year in
the region.
In 2014, the Knights played a very tough national schedule that was made even
harder by the unpredictible weather during the spring. The rain and cold made
it difficult to play, forcing a number of cancellations and postponements. While
playing against top competition, the Knights played only 11 home games, 22 away
and finished 12 games above .500.
The Knights will return a solid core of players to pair with new talent from
Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Florida, which should lead to some
exciting baseball at Fell field in Warwick during the 2015 season.

SEASON OUTLOOK

The 2015 Community College of Rhode Island softball team will strive to once again for
a regional championship. The Lady Knights
will play a very competitive schedule. The
team has been working hard training during
the off-season to refine skills and prepare for
the season opener against Northeastern in
late March.
Head coach Liz Afonso will retun at the
helm of the Lady Knights for her sixth
season. Her staff will consist of Jess Borden,
Caitlin Montella and Nancy Santopadre.
Despite its size, the Lady Knights look to
be solid and true contenders for the 2015
season. The team is returing five sophmores,
led by co-captain Taylor Butler (North Kingstown, R.I.). Butler will lead the team in the
starting pitching rotation and in the outfield.
Her quick bat and ability to get on base will
certainly spark the offense. Maxine DeLuise
(Warwick, R.I.) will step into the important
catching role and with her stong arm and
solid defensive skills, she is a force to be
reckoned with. Ashley Spear (North Smithfield, R.I.) returns to the team at shortstop
and her speed and strength both offensively
and defensively will be an asset to the team.
Jessie Brosnahan (Warwick, R.I.) will see time
at first base, as well as pitcher. Her strength
at the plate will help lead the Lady Knights’
offensive attack. Rounding out the returning sophomores will be Rebecca Edwards
(Attleboro, Mass.), who will be an asset in the
team in the outfield with her consistent and
hard-working style of play.
Joining the returning sophmores are five
freshman recruits, Meghan Rousseau (Richmond, R.I.), Kristina Rodriguez (North Kingstown, RI), Jessica Spargo (Westerly, R.I.), Erica
Jewett (Coventry, R.I.) and Jenna Urso (West
Warwick, R.I.). With tremendous speed,
Rousseau and Rodriquez will be key assets
both in the outfield as well as at the plate.
Spargo and Jewett come in as key recruits
for pitching and hitting stength, as well as
for their strong defensive skills in the infield.
Urso also will add to the infield strength with
her excellent range and solid defensive skills.
According to head coach Afonso, “We
look to be a powerful defensive team with
explosive potential at the plate, a very strong
batting order and speed in the outfield. This
team should definitely be a contender for the
Region XXI title as well as districts.”

Caitlin Montella ’09
Liz Afonso enters her sixth season as head coach
of the women’s softball team. Over the past four
seasons she has compiled a 101-56 win-loss record
and twice received the Region XXI Coach of the
Year Award in 2010 and 2011.
Before taking the reins as head coach, Afonso
served as the program’s assistant coach for nine
years. She helped lead the Lady Knights to regional
championship titles in four of her last seven seasons
as an assistant. The Lady Knights have continued
on that winning path as Region XXI Champions in
2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014, and district runner-up in 2010.
Afonso has more than 27 years of coaching experience at the middle
school, high school and amateur levels. She previously coached the Lincoln
Middle School team to three state championships and four division titles
in five years at the helm. She also coached her ASA Travel Team to a top 10
finish in the Amateur Softball Association of America National Championship.

in 99 at bats, tallying eight doubles, 27 RBIs and 27
runs scored. She received All-Region XXI honors
as a sophomore. She graduated from CCRI in
2009 with an associate degree and lives in Warwick, R.I.

Jess Borden, a former Lady Knight, returns for her

will serve as the pitching coach. While at CCRI,
Borden left her mark on the records books, both

Island College, where she went on to play for two
years after graduating from CCRI.

SEASON SUMMARY
The CCRI Lady Knights softball team took on Dean College for the
Region XXI championship. In the three-game series, the Knights took
the first two games, 5-0 in the first and 11-3 in the second game. This
matched the Knights against the nationally ranked Mercyhurst North East
College team in the district championship. The Lady Knights fell to Mercyhurst, ending its season with a 12-14 record.
The Lady Knights had five players earn All-Region XXI honors: co-captain
Alex Place (East Greenwich, R.I.), Sarah Deal (North Kingstown, R.I.),
Macayla Paiva (West Greenwich, R.I.), Amber Boucher (Warwick, R.I.) and
Taylor Butler (North Kingstown, R.I.).
As a freshman, Taylor Butler was a top player for the team with 36 hits.
This included three doubles while adding 13 RBIs and 22 runs scored and
11 stolen bases. In the pitching circle, Taylor led the Lady Knights with a
2.75 ERA with 30 strikeouts in 56 innings pitched and was tied for the
team lead with six victories. Returning players Ashley Spear (Harrisville,
R.I.), hit .403 with 17 RBI’s and catcher Samantha Archambault (North
Smithfield, R.I.) hit .379 with 14 RBI’s and will look to help carry the team
in 2015.
With a solid core of returning and new players, the Lady Knights have a
strong team for the 2015 season.

The CCRI tennis team will again be playing
an aggressive schedule, including the Harford
National Invitational Tournament in Maryland,
which includes NJCAA DI and DIII teams and
colleges from New Jersey and New York.
The squad will be made up of all new
players. Captaining the team will be Justin
Allen (Warwick, R.I.), a talented player with
tremendous maturity and leadership skills.
Troy Derrick (East Providence, R.I.) will be
bringing a wealth of playing experience to the
team after playing for Rhode Island College
last year. The Knights are fortunate to add
Torin Fenton (South Kingstown, R.I.) to the
team. The South Kingstown native played
under the leadership of the Andy Carr, a former CCRI standout and accomplished South
Kingstown coach. Rounding out the roster
will be Max Mendoza (West Warwick, R.I.)
and Jackie French (Scituate, R.I.).
CCRI is the only opponent in the region
that does not have outdoor tennis courts
and must travel for all matches. Turning what
could be seen as a negative into a positive,
head coach Deb Panzica said, “Our team has
an aggressive travel schedule, but our players
have the opportunity to play against some of
the best JUCO teams and athletes.”

Anthony Lamborghini
Deb Panzica of Scituate begins her sixth season
as head coach of CCRI’s coed tennis team. She
helped lead the 2012 squad to its best finish in
program history with a Region XXI title and a
second place finish at the NJCAA Division II
Tennis National Championship. Under her leadership, CCRI has had three players named NJCAA DIII Player of the Year. Ross Bouchard was
honored in 2013, Alex Cavanagh received the
honor in 2010 and Mike Fallone in 2012. Deb
previously served as head coach of the women’s
tennis team and as assistant coach of the men’s tennis team.
Panzica served for five years as a board member of USA Tennis Rhode
Island and served as president of the organization for two years. She
also is a former board member of USA Tennis New England. She was a
National Tennis Ratings Program

2014 SEASON SUMMARY
The 2014 CCRI coed tennis team had another excellent year.
They were 4-4 overall and won the Region XXI tournament
over Bristol Community College, 9-0. From there the CCRI tennis team traveled to Plano, Texas, to compete in the 2014 men’s
tennis National Tournament hosted by Collin College. John
Chammat (Cumberland, RI) shined at nationals, playing his way
into the semifinals. Chammat defeated Jon Robbins of Gloucester County College in the quarter finals to advance to the semis.
He was highly competitive in the semifinals but fell short, losing
to the No. 1 ranked player, Maclane Smoke, of Brookdale Community College.

SEASON OUTLOOK
The CCRI golf team enters the 2015 season as defending Region XXI champions.
The Knights have two returning players,
Steven Letterle (Cranston, R.I.) and Matt
Burke (Wakefield, R.I.). Burke is returning to
the team after having taken one season off.
Letterle earned All-Region XXI honors as
the medalist at the 2014 region championship after shooting a 79 and 77 to total 156
and lead the Knights to the region title. He
went on to finish 25th overall at the NJCAA
Division III National Tournament. The team
finished in 11th place at Nationals.
Joining the team this year are a talented group of freshman led by Second Team
All-Stater Josh Macera (Cranston, R.I.) and
All-Central Division player Alex Greenwood
(Cranston, R.I.), both from Cranston West
High School. They will be joined by Mike Higgins (Warwick, R.I.), Dan Hayes (Pawtucket,
R.I.) and Ryan Neilan (Barrington, R.I.).
The team is working towards earning an
invitation, once again, to this year’s regional
and national tournaments.

CRANSTON COUNTRY CLUB
The Community College of Rhode Island golf team practices and competes at
Cranston Country Club. The 18-hole course hosts hundreds of local tournaments each year along with special events and parties. The club is owned by the
Lombardi family and operated by Michael Lombardi, a former standout golfer
for the CCRI team who was inducted into the college’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
Tom Palmer, the club’s director of golf, also is a former member of the CCRI
program.

Ron Fielder
James Stringfellow returns for his third year
on the CCRI golf coaching staff and second
as head coach. Stringfellow will look to
build on the success the Knights had in 2014
when they won the region for the third time
in four years. This year, the Knights look to
finish in the top 10 at the Division III Golf
National Tournament in Chautauqua, New
York, in June. Stringfellow has been a baseball and football coach at the high school
level for the past 10 years. He is a graduate
of Grantham University where he earned a
degree in Criminal Justice. His experience coaching student-athletes
and his desire to work in a college setting make him a great fit for
the CCRI golf program. He lives in Warwick, R.I.
Ron Fielder has been a parttime member of the athletic
department staff at CCRI for
35 years. He has had experience in many areas, including women’s softball coach,
physical education instructor,
field house supervisor and
academic advisor with the
Student-Athlete Academic
Support Program. Ron has
been an avid golfer for many
years and has had extensive experience in tournament
and league play. His strong commitment to CCRI
athletics has a positive impact on the members of the
golf team.
Ron has M.S. and B.S. degrees in physical education
from the University of Rhode Island, is a resident of
Warwick with his wife, Kathy, and has three adult children. He is also a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

SEASON SUMMARY
The 2014 team was led by first year head coach, Jim Stringfellow, and assistant and longtime CCRI
athletic department member, Ron Fielder. The team headed into the season with high expectations
and the goal of winning another Region XXI championship.
Sophomore captains Gina Bartolotta (Wakefield, R.I.) and Zach Sullivan (Cumberland, R.I.) had
solid efforts in each tournament and combined with the talent of fellow sophomore Chris Lussier (Cranston, R.I.) and talented freshman Steven Letterle (Cranston, R.I.), the team took home
another Region XXI championship. This was the third consecutive year for the golf team to win the
region.
The regional win sent the Knights to play at the NJCAA Division III National Tournament, held at
the Chautauqua Golf Club in Chautauqua, New York. Letterle shot a combined 316 total and finished 25th overall. Bartolotta finished her CCRI athletic career by shooting a 355 and finished 72nd
in the tournament. As a team, the Knights finished with a solid 11th at the Nationals.

In the spring of 1968, RIJC fielded its first golf team. The squad won nine matches and lost
only one in its first season. Home matches were contested at the Cranston Country Club.
