DepEd to implement K+12 program
Anthony Joseph C. Ocampo
The Department of Education
announced on October 5, 2010 that they
will implement the Enhanced K+12 Basic
Education Program starting SY 2012-2013
for incoming 1st year high school students
and incoming grade 1 students.
Kindergarten will be offered universally for
students 5 years of age starting SY 20112012. An additional 2 years will be added to
the high school which will be called senior
high school (SHS). One of the objectives of
the program is to decongest the basic
education curriculum which DepEd
describes as “designed to teach a 12-year
curriculum, yet it is delivered in just 10
years.” (DepEd Discussion Paper on the
Enhanced K+12 Basic Education program, 05
October 2010)
Another objective is to better prepare
basic education graduates for higher
education or entry into the workforce. The
SHS curriculum is expected to achieve this
goal. According to the DepEd, “the two
years of senior high school intend to
provide time for students to consolidate
acquired academic skills and competencies”
and that the SHS curriculum “will offer areas
of specialization or electives such as
science and technology, music and arts,
agriculture and fisheries, sports, business
and entrepreneurship, etc., and subjects for
advanced placement.” DepEd did not
specify if there will be required subjects in
SHS or if the SHS curriculum will consist
purely of electives.
DepEd reported that it “will take into
account the issues and concerns of all
stakeholders, including the high school
graduates before 2016.”
The K+12 Program and the UPIS Curriculum
The DepEd program looks very much like
the original UPIS Curriculum Framework
(see Figure 1) developed in 1976 except that
the UPIS curriculum is a K+10 program.

building conked out last September 20. This
was caused by a short-circuit that gutted
the cables of the main feeder line which are
too old and worn out according to the
Campus Architect and the Campus
Maintenance Office.
As a consequence, the 3-6 classes have
been greatly inconvenienced with the hot,
humid and dim classrooms and most of all
there is no cold water coming from the
drinking fountains. The latter has been
causing so much discomfort to our students
who perspire a lot due to the hot weather.
Despite the odds, the class activities went

Both are designed to produce graduates who are prepared
for higher education or for employment. Moreover, in the
last two years of high school (grades 9 and 10 in UPIS),
there were no required courses, only electives which were
college preparatory courses as well as interest courses.
However, in the original UPIS program, the bulk of the
study load in the last year of study was taken up by the
Work Program which arms the students with livelihood
skills useful for work after graduation.
In subsequent years, UPIS has reduced the emphasis on
the Work Program and made some of its electives required
courses.
In 2007, UPIS totally abandoned the
“employment track” and concentrated its efforts in
preparing its students for post-secondary education. This
resulted in the curriculum framework as shown in Figure 2.
Implications to the UPIS
The DepEd’s K+12 program can easily be adopted by the
UPIS. For one, UPIS already has a Kindergarten program in
place although UPIS should consider reducing the
enrolment age to 4.5-5.5 years. UPIS also has a tried and
tested electives program although when the DepEd does
come out with its revised Minimum Learning Competencies
(MLCs), some of these electives may end up being required
at grades 11 and 12 and new ones may be offered instead.
Fig. 2. The New UPIS Curriculum Framework
Whether UPIS will revive the “employment track” is
another matter. However, it is the opinion of this writer
that there is still a place for specialized high schools like
UPIS and the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) which
focus primarily (exclusively in the case of PSHS) on postsecondary education under the K+12 program.

the Blog and UPIS in general)

came to the rescue by providing the students with gallons
of purified water.
To decongest the rooms, the grade 5 and 6 students
have been moved to the high school last September 28
until such time that the electric power will be restored.
However, with the latest development that repair
work will take 120 days , the Principal, Dr. Aurora C.
Zuñiga decided that the grade 3 and 4 students will also
be transferred to the high school in the second semester
starting Nov. 5. They will occupy the classrooms in the first
floor of the new building while the grades 5 and 6 will use
those in the English and Practical Arts pavilions.
In her open memo dated September 23, the College of
Education Dean Dina Ocampo said that the work on the
main feeder line will begin as soon as the negotiated
contract for the repair is approved by the UP Diliman
Administration.
Evaluation of the four-day schedule
Rachel Patricia B. Ramirez
Students, teachers and parents support the continued
implementation of the four-day schedule, according to the
results of the survey conducted by the Office of Research,
Development and Publication during the first semester of
the current academic year (2010-2011). The survey was
conducted to gain insight on how the implementation of
the different school programs and activities can be
improved considering the reduced number of school days.
The survey used a 4-point Likert-type scale–
(strongly agree, agree, disagree, and strongly disagree) in
two versions: (1) for students and teachers; and (2) for
parents. The statements in the survey questionnaire
2
included some items such as allotted time for class
discussions, lunch and recess, makeup quiz/test, and library
work which were taken from the responses in the previous
surveys conducted in 2006 and 2008. Items concerning
some school activities and programs such as group
guidance and homeroom meetings, consultation with
teachers, homework, and group projects were also included. One important item asked was whether the respondents agree or disagree to continue with the implementation of the four-day schedule.
There were 1,645 respondents, broken down as
follows: 958 students, 57 teachers, and 630 parents from
Kindergarten to Grade 10 levels .

Linggo ng Kasaysayan 2010
Gringo M. Corpuz
bansa. Layunin din nito na ipaalam sa
mga mag-aaral na ang pagpapahalaga
at pagsusulong ng ating kultura ay
daan tungo sa pagbabago ng bayan.
Kaugnay nito, naging sentro ng
pagdiriwang
ang
tema
nitong
“Kasaysayan at Kalinangang Pinoy:
Tungo sa Pagbubuo ng Bayan.”
Nakaangkla ang nasabing
tema sa itinakdang paksangdiwa ng pagdiriwang ng
Linggo ng Kasaysayan sa
Unibersidad ng PilipinasDiliman, na pinangunahan ng
Departamento ng Kasaysayan. Binibigyang-diin dito
Araling Panlipunan (KAP)
bilang pagtupad sa layunin
nitong imulat at bigyang pagkakataon
elementary at hayskul. Pinasigla ng
pambukas na programa sa Grado 3-6
ng mahuhusay na pagtatanghal. Ang
UPIS 3-6 Choir ay nag-alay ng kanilang
rendisyon ng makabayang awitin na
“Bayan Ko” sa pangunguna ni Bb.
Shiela Jay Pineda. Nagtanghal din sa
kauna-unahang pagkakataon sa UPIS
ang Teatrong MULAT, isang grupong
nagsusulong at nagpapanatili ng
makulay na tradisyon ng puppetry sa
Pilipinas at sa ibang mga bansa sa
4
Timog Silangang Asya. Naging tampok
din sa kanilang pagtatanghal ang
pagdalo ni Professor Emeritus Amelia
Bonifacio o mas kilala sa tawag na
“Lola Amel”. Nawili ang mga bata sa
panonood ng puppet show, kung saan
dalawa sa kanilang mga kamag-aral ay
kasama sa pagtatanghal. Sila ay sina
Roel Ramolete ng 3-Ilog at Aina
Ramolete ng 6-Topas. Dagdag pa rito,
lalong sumaya ang pagdiriwang ng
tumugtog ang BRADS ’15, isang banda
na binubuo ng ilang mag-aaral ng
grado 6 na sina Ryan James Cacho, Xyd
Agapito, CJ Velasco at Juneau
Villanueva ng 6-Garnet, Rafael de
Peralta ng 6-Perlas at Christine Bailon
at Aina Ramolete ng 6-Topas. Naging
7-10. Noong Martes, ika-14 ng Setyembre nagkaroon ng quiz bee
tungkol sa kasaysayan ng
Pilipinas, Asya at Mundo.
10-Dao, 9-Iron, 8-Damselfly at
7-Jupiter.Bukod dito, nagdaos
sumulat
at makaboto sa
eleksyon.
pelikula.
Felipe P. Jocano
ng Departamento ng Antropolohiya, UP Diliman. Gayundin,
Nuklus, Sinagbayan at Matilda.

Agosto 11 at 12.
Gutierrez at Freddy Pajarillaga (7-Mercury), Mariel de Luna
at Ian Villanueva (8-Damselfly), Irish Palomeno at Franco
Abenojar (9-Gold), Diwee Llorente at Armond Macariola
(10 -Lauan).
bawat seksyon. Nagkamit ng unang gantimpala sina
Alapaap O. Coquilla at Rodolfo Manuel B. Ramplete
(3-Sapa), Winona Mae B. Zuñiga at Eric Kyle P. Ileto
(4-Singkamas), Stephanie Julienne Bello at Seth Tristan
Oliver (5-Arayat), Rani Domingo at Andrei Vertudes
(6-Garnet).
Rosalie C.
Faune (3-6) at Bb. Katrina Paula Ortega (7-10).
Pilipino.

Evaluation of the four-day schedule
Continued from page 2
More than three-quarters (83 %) of
the respondents agreed to the
continuation of the four-day schedule
with their positive response to the
This general view is confirmed in
another item where almost the same
number of respondents (80%)
responded negatively to the
statement, “Hindi mainam na apat na
araw lamang ang klase sa isang
linggo.”
All three groups of respondents
(students, parents, and teachers) also
agreed that enough time is allotted for

(1) class discussions and other classroom activities; (2) lunch and recess;
(3) group guidance and homeroom
meetings; (4) makeup quiz or test; (5)
students to do their homework; and
(6) study at home during weekdays.
Likewise, they also believed that the
students are given enough time to rest
and to prepare for the following week
during weekends. In addition, they
are one in saying that they save on
gas, fare and baon. Finally, while they
responded positively to the statement,
“Tama lamang ang pagpasok ng alassiyete ng umaga” they did not agree to
the statement, “Hindi mainam ang
oras ng uwian tuwing hapon.”
The students and their parents also
agreed that enough time is allotted to
do research in the library, consult with
teachers and attend club meetings
however, teachers feel otherwise.
In light of the survey results, the
ORDP has come up with the following
recommendations: (1) include
Mondays as possible time for makeup
quiz/test and student-teacher consultation; (2) extend library hours; (3)
give more time for students to plan
their projects during class hours; and
(4) consider interdepartmental
coordination of requirements.
K-2 celebrates Literacy Week
Xyra Duque
Excitement filled the air as the K-2
celebrated the
literacy week on
September 7, 8, and 9, 2010. This has
always been one of the most awaited
events in the Department, when
children are encouraged to find their
own adventures through reading
books. This year’s celebration was
made even more interesting, with the
K-2 linking up with the Reading
Department of the College of
Education, thus making it more fun
and exciting for the children.
A number of activities for the week
included: DEAR (Drop-Everything-AndRead), Characters’ Parade, and Meet
The-Author. The DEAR encouraged the
children to share their favorite books
with
their
classmates
through
swapping and shared reading in the
classroom. The Characters’ Parade
brought to life the children’s favorite
book
character as they paraded
around wearing the colorful costumes
of their chosen book characters. The
parade culminated in “Meet The
Author” where the children had the
chance to interact with this year’s
featured author, Tin Canon, who wrote
the following books; “Si Pilong PatagoTago,” “Sampung Magkakaibigan,” and
the award-winning book “Bakit
Matagal Ang Sundo Ko?” The latter is a
story about a brave little girl who
thought of wonderful stories to keep
herself from worrying while waiting for
her mother who usually comes late to
fetch her. The children also had fun
listening to EDR 121 students read a
poem and tell the story of “Si Pilong
Patago-tago.”
During the session with Tin Canon,
the children were given a short talk
about how the author love for writing
started and they also got some pointers on how to
write a storybook.
After the session, the children had the
chance to ask the author a lot of
questions and also had their books
signed by Tin Canon.
The week ended successfully with
the children writing their letters to Tin
Canon, with most of them wishing ,
“Sana po makasulat din kami ng libro
tulad ninyo!”

gaganapin sa Cagayan de Oro.
Matatandaang noong nakaraang
taon, itinanghal na kampeon ang
koponan ng UPIS Track and Field sa
72nd UAAP season. Kaya naman, sa
pagbubukas ng kanilang kompetisyon
sa pangalawang semester nitong taon,
Joy Rodgers (gitna)
matinding pag-eensayo ang ginagawa
ng grupo upang mapanatili ang
kanilang titulo.
Hindi rin nagpahuli si Joy Rodgers
na miyembro ng UPIS Swimming Team
na nagdala ng karangalan mula sa
paglahok din sa Milo Little Olympics.
Nalangoy ni Rodgers ang isang gold sa
200M breast stroke at isang silver sa
100M breast stroke.
ng Track and Field.
Samantala nitong nakaraang 73rd
UAAP Season ng Swimming noong
Setyembre 23- 25 sa Trace College, Los
Banos Laguna, nasisid din ni Rodgers
ang isang gold para sa 50M breast
stroke at isang bronze sa 100M breast
stroke. Kasabay ni Rodgers ang buong
UPIS Swim team na ibinigay ang
kanilang buong husay at lakas sa

Volleyball girls ang puwestong
2nd runner-up mula sa katatapos lamang na 73rd UAAP Volleyball Season. Ang mga palaro ng
volleyball ay ginanap sa UE
Caloocan nitong buong unang
semester.
