Some Notes from Fr. Dwight’s Desk…….
Respect Life Sunday
The first Sunday of October is designated by the bishops of the United States as Respect Life
Sunday. Life is a precious gift from God. Each year, on Respect Life Sunday, we are challenged to reflect on a
whole host of inter-related issues that increase our awareness of the fragility of all human life, from the moment of
conception until the moment of natural death.
Actions such as abortion, euthanasia, and capital punishment each assail the gift of life that God has given us. In
a time when we have made everything from Kleenex to automobiles easy to discard, we cannot allow ourselves to
move down a “slippery slope” that continues to make it easier to make human life disposable.
There are many efforts in our own parish community that show how much we value the gift of human life—
efforts like our parish Right to Life group, the Gabriel Project , our collection of food for our parish St. Vincent de
Paul ministry, our parish Outreach Ministry, the Advent Giving Tree, the ministry we offer in support of our
children, the elderly, the sick and the dying, each in their own way speak to how much we cherish and support the
gift of the life from God. You may also wish to join in the 40 Days for Life prayer vigil for an end to abortion in the
United States.
On this Respect Life Sunday, may we make this our prayer:
Father and maker of all,
You adorn all creation
With splendor and beauty
And fashion human lives
In your image and likeness.
Awaken in every heart
Reverence for the work of your hands,
And renew among your people
A readiness to nurture and sustain
Your precious gift of life.
We ask this through Christ, our Lord.
Birthday Thankfulness
I am grateful that God has graced me with another year of life. Many thanks go to everyone who remembered
me on my birthday with cards and notes and gifts. Everyone’s generosity and warm wishes are greatly appreciated.
The GIFT Campaign, Phase II
The Growing in Faith Together Phase II (GIFT II) campaign was established to allow the parish community to
eliminate our debt for the expansion of St. John Educational Center (completed in 2000), made significant
improvements to our Activity Center, and provided funds for the expansion of the church’s gathering space to include
adequate restrooms, a bride’s room, the Gospel Room (for meetings or small catechetical gatherings and additional
space for our parish music program) and a vesting sacristy. The project was completed in November 2007. These
exciting improvements would not be possible without the many generous stewardship gifts we have received.
Thanks to the generous response of so many, GIFT II raised about $3.7-million in pledges. These funds, combined
with a mortgage from the Diocese of Lansing, helped to pay for the cost of the projects outlined above.
Each of us can help eliminate this debt by making use of the GIFT Campaign Phase II envelope included in our
annual offertory envelope booklets. Because of how the Diocese of Lansing classifies funds collected through the
GIFT Campaign Phase II, gifts to this campaign are not subject to the annual diocesan assessment (like an annual tax
by the diocese); thus, giving to the parish through GIFT Phase II helps to directly eliminate our remaining debt while
also reducing our diocesan assessment. It’s a win-win from our parish perspective. If you’d like to make a
contribution to the GIFT Campaign Phase II, please do so by using the envelope contained in your offertory envelope
booklet.
The improvements that have been made possible through GIFT II will provide benefits to our parish community
for generations to come. The founders of St. John the Evangelist in Fenton planned for the future so that we could
benefit. Through GIFT II, we can do the same for future generations.

From the very beginning God has created man and woman
out of love for love, to give themselves as a complete selfgift to the other. God said, “It is not good for man to be alone. I will make
a suitable partner for him… That is why a man leaves his father and mother
and clings to his wife and the two of them become on flesh” (Gen 2:18,
24). Jesus uses these same words in today’s Gospel to teach us about the
goods of marriage. The Church teaches that there are three goods of
marriage: indissolubility, fidelity, and openness to fertility.
Indissolubility means that the marriage cannot be destroyed or undone
– it is permanent and life-long. This necessary component of marriage is
so often overlooked today because of the spread of no-fault divorce.
Living an authentic and holy married life is certainly not easy, and that is
why it is a sacrament that gives grace, that those who enter into Marriage
might have the grace necessary to live it out. In the day-to-day living out
of marital love, in the daily struggles and challenges of family life, married
couples are able to “take up the cross” and follow Jesus through self-giving
love.
Fidelity means that the couple is completely faithful to each other.
Marriage is a resounding “yes!” to the other, and a definitive “no!” to every
other person on earth. In saying “I do” on their wedding day, a couple
is committing themselves exclusively to the other person for the rest of
their life. The couple declares, “I promise to be true to you in good times
and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love you and honor you all the
days of my life.” In God’s language, “they are no longer two but one flesh.
Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must
separate” (Mk 10:8-9). Once again, this can be incredibly difficult, but it
is possible with God’s grace!
The final good of marriage is openness to fertility (i.e. openness to
children). It’s important to remember that children are always a gift from
God. A married couple has the distinct blessing of being able to image
God’s love in a very unique way: they are able to participate in God’s
creative power and bring life into the world. A husband and wife are
able to bring a new life into existence, a child who is loved by God and
destined to live eternally with Him. What an amazing gift!
We see these great goods of marriage, but when we look at the world
around us it is very evident that divorce is a reality, especially in our
country. If you have been through a divorce I would encourage you to
look into The Divorce Survival Guide that the parish puts on to help and
support those who are going through this difficult time. I would also
encourage those who are divorced and remarried to seek an annulment by
setting up an appointment with a priest. Remember that God’s love for
each of us is an image of marital love: it is indissoluble (it never ends or
runs out), faithful (He never abandons us), and it is fruitful (He gives
us abundant life).

up the material they have missed. Unit Two begins the week of

FLINT (WJRT) - (09/15/15) - Tuesday, a symposium on
human trafficking brought together individuals in the
education, medical, judicial and law enforcement fields.
Leaders said victims of human trafficking too often go
unnoticed because of the lack of knowledge on the topic.
Five local organizations teamed up for the presentation,
which offered an opportunity for people to ask experts
questions.
The Genesee County Medical Society, Genesee County
Human Trafficking Task Force, Greater Flint Coalition,
Genesee County Medical Society Alliance, Mich. Dept.
of Health and Human Services and the Genesee County
Osteopathic Association organized the event.
Peter Levin, with the Genesee County Medical Society,
said victims of forced labor and sex trafficking often give
subtle clues, but those aren't always being received by
those they may come into contact with - like doctors, law
enforcement and even loved ones. Levin said the goal is
to educate the community, including schools and social
service agencies so they can ask the right questions and
look beyond the surface.
"When you get into labor trafficking or refuge trafficking
or sex trafficking, it really impacts a lot of people, and
there's a lot of people who are invisible who are being
trafficked," Levin said. "So by increasing awareness, we
hopefully will take a step toward at least reducing it in
this community."
Leaders said partnerships will make it easier to get
victims help - whether it's finding a safe place to live,
therapy or a job. Michigan State Police said human
trafficking doesn't fit a certain profile and affects every
race, age group and economic class. Trooper Steven
Kramer said the more the public is educated, the easier it
is to lock up those who are committing the brutal crimes.
"(What's) very important is trying to get convictions and
prosecutions," Kramer said. "Getting a grip on the whole
thing requires everybody to be involved, on the same
page and know what's going on." Penalties for human
trafficking at the federal level range from 10 years in
prison to life.

THE (DEACON) RILEY REPORT—
This last week has been a whirlwind! Last weekend was awesome experiencing Applefest for the first time! I had a lot
of fun and ate way too much food! I was really happy talking to people and seeing everyone have fun. It was also great
seeing some unfamiliar faces from the community. From what I could tell, everything went smoothly. Thank you to
everyone who volunteered in some way because without you, it would not have been the success that it was.
After Applefest, I left for Washington, D.C. to welcome Pope Francis to the United States! Five of us from the
seminary had the privilege of traveling to Washington, D.C. and attending the canonization Mass of St. Junipero Serra.
Fr. Serra founded 21 missions between 1769 and 1782 in what would become California. He is credited with
confirming 5,309 Native Americans who converted to Christianity during his missionary work throughout California.
A classmate of mine, Dcn. Kevin Roelant (Archdiocese of Detroit) and I vested for the canonization Mass and assisted
with the distribution of Holy Communion. We were not able to meet Pope Francis because security was extremely tight
(and that is an understatement). But, we were able to get really close to him before Mass. Before Mass began he prayed
and collected his thoughts in the side chapel where we were vesting. He had a pretty full day before the Mass at 4:15
p.m. I talked to one of the Secret Service agents who said that the security planning for the Pope was more than for any
inauguration of a President.
Being in Washington, D.C. was inspiring for me! Pope Francis is doing a lot for the Church. But, one thing that he is
showing us, without saying anything is the joy of the Gospel. In his homily for the canonization Mass, he used the
phrase “Go out” eleven times. He exhorts each one of us to live and spread the joy of the Gospel – the joy in knowing
that no matter what circumstance we find ourselves in, we can trust that God will keep His promises in liberating us in
eternal life with Him. Each one of us is a member of the Church – a community of believers. As members of this
community, we have the duty to share with those around us the joy that comes from knowing Jesus Christ. Pope
Francis’ visit to the United States shows us, among many other things, the joy that must permeate our very being and
offered to those around us, especially our families.
I prayed for everyone while I was in Washington, D.C. I prayed for all of you here at St. John the Evangelist in a very
real and intentional way. In a particular way I also prayed for the children and youth of this great parish. I’ve met and
come to know many of our youth in the four months that I’ve been here and I hope and pray that they are able to grow in
the holy joy that Pope Francis really wants us all to know. I hope that they are able to encounter Jesus Christ at home, at
school, in recreation and leisure – everywhere! That was a big part of my prayer in Washington. - Deacon Ryan
