August 21, 2016 - St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church
August 21, 2016
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
The time for Daily Mass
will change
From 9:00 am to 8:45 a.m.
beginning August 29th.
Offertory Observation…
Today’s reading from Isaiah describes the
Israelites bringing their offering to the Lord “in
clean vessels.” The gift of myself-my patient
endurance and fidelity to the will of God is as
important as the monetary gift I offer.
Vocation Views…
Will you help gather people to be a part of the
reign of God? Pray to be open if God calls you to
serve as priest, deacon, brother, or sister.

Whatever . . . . . from Fr. Robert
Monday we had my first parish council meeting. What a wonderful group of people, they truly love our parish and
their hearts are on fire with the love of Christ. We discussed the parish picnic, Faith in Flint, Outreach, the rectory
and many other things. The consensus was that moving the picnic to the parking lot was better for our seniors and
gave good access to the bathrooms. There was some concern over not having enough food, though most believed there was
more than enough. There was a suggestion to advertise serving times so that people know when to show up. I never have that
problem since I make sure I am always near the front of the line (I am not a runner, but in the Seminary I almost always made it
to the lunch line first after Mass).
We are coming up with a list of possible volunteer opportunities in Flint. A few of us will take a tour of Catholic Charities and
St. Luke's N.E.W. Life Center (It is my opinion that these two ministries are the best outreach the Catholic Church has going in
Flint. We also discussed our Youth Ministry, their mission trip, and also the implications of the new government pay rule for
salary vs hourly, and how it effects our future plans. We also discussed the new plan method for our Outreach and how we are
able to stretch $1,500 a week (this is the budgeted amount based on how much was brought in by donations expressly given to
this ministry) by working with other churches. Outreach will continue to explain in the bulletin how they work with others in
our area to stretch that amount to $3,000 and more each week. They put in a lot of time to make sure they are good stewards of
the money entrusted to them. Deacon Terry is our leader in the Outreach efforts. This is not only a practical extension of his
ministry, but is exactly the way the Holy Spirit lead the Apostles to institute the Order of Deacons, as
explained in scripture in the Acts of the Apostles.
As you can see from the picture, we are trying to fix a number of issues with the rectory. First, is some
mold or mildew issues caused by a leaky roof over the front door and a number of windows throughout
the house. With a donation of half the money needed from a generous parishioner we are well on our
way to replacing the windows. We need about $7,500 more. Some have asked the cost of each window,
and the average is about $575. These are very large windows that in many cases are replacing up to six
smaller windows. This will save the parish a lot in energy costs. A parishioner has approached Dee
Cramer (which is run by active parishioners who take good care of our entire campus’ heating and cooling needs) to work on a
plan to remove the old boiler (which is on its last legs) and install a forced air system that will do both heat and A/C. With
generous contributions from parishioners, and even some frequent Sunday Mass guests, this should cost our parish very little.
The CCW and K of C are working on projects to help raise money for this and other rectory projects. I am so grateful to all of
you for the care you have for your priests.
Many have asked how my dogs are adjusting to their new home, they are adjusting better than Fr. Jim is to them, I believe.
Don't listen to a word Fr. Jim says about his experience. It's all probably true, just don't listen.
from Fr. Jim . . . . .
Every year I spend a good amount of time meeting with the 8th graders in the school. Most of our time is spent
with the “Ask Fr. Jim Question Box.” As we were talking about heaven, hell, and judgment (it was an
interesting conversation) I asked the kids to complete this sentence: the gate is wide and the way is easy that
leads to ________. They all yelled, HEAVEN! (The actual quote from Jesus reads: the gate is wide and the
way is easy that leads to destruction [Mt 7:13]). This is very much the mindset of our contemporary culture: as long as I can
be considered a “good person” I’ll go to heaven. Or even: God is merciful and loving, so it doesn’t really matter what I do.
But Jesus says something very different: Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but
will not be strong enough.
Every single week in the creed we profess, “[Jesus] will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead.” Just as none of
us can escape or cheat death, so too no one will escape judgment. This is something that may rub us the wrong way,
especially in our politically correct society where we are constantly being told not to “judge” others. We must recognize that
everything we have is pure gift – we did not ask to be created nor did God ask us if we wanted to be created. Life itself is pure
gift, every single one of us is a miracle of love. Yet we are not our own, as St. Paul says, “For if we live, we live for the
Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s” (Romans 14:8). Since our life is a
gift, we are a steward of that gift and make choices everyday whether to use that gift properly (striving for holiness, virtue,
deeper relationship with God, etc.) or improperly (vice, sin, etc.). In the end we will be judged based on our faith (do I believe
in God?), our relationship with God (do I just know about Him, but do I actually know Him?), and our actions (have I done
good and avoided evil?). The fact that God truly knows our heart should either fill us with great hope or great fear, depending
on whether or not we are daily striving for deeper faith, an active relationship with God, and to do good and avoid evil.
Jesus has come to be our Savior, and He truly does love us, but He will never force that love upon us. Take some time to ask:
am I coasting on the way that is easy towards the gate that leads to destruction? Or am I daily striving to enter through the
narrow gate?

Director of Religious Education
Diane Pierce ……
Dear people of St. John
Parish,
I would like to introduce myself to you.
My name is Diane Pierce and I am excited
in joining you and becoming part of your
parish family by becoming your new
Music Minister. On a personal note, my
husband, Tom and I will have been
married 36 years this coming October.
(And never had a fight!) We have 2 sons
who we are very proud of. Todd is 34 and
Scott is 33. We just rescued a little
puppy, Rosie, this summer and she has
added some excitement to our lives!
I am coming from a wonderful parish, St.
Pius X in Flint, and will miss them very
much. In fact, I had to tell the staff about
my leaving after 30+ years and I was so
nervous that I stopped by McDonalds to
grab a quick breakfast sandwich, paid for
it and realized when I got on the
expressway that I forgot to pick up my
sandwich at the window!
After much praying about this I know that
God is leading me in a new direction.
And yes, I worked with Fr. Robert at St.
Pius X for 10 years. One of my main
goals right now is to restart and ‘renew’
an adult choir here at St. John. That has
always been my passion and some of you
might remember me from directing some
combined choirs at other churches or
maybe the Missions at Whiting in 2000
and 2004 bringing 150 people together to
form a choir from our neighboring
parishes in the Diocese. Singing to God is
another way of praying to God.
It will take awhile to meet all of you and
remember your names, but please, think
about helping me get this choir going.
Watch the bulletin for more information.
Musically Yours,
Diane Pierce

A Catechist is
A teacher
A faith mentor
A role model
Do you feel called to serve as a teacher or aide in our
parish Religious Education program?
We are still short of teachers and aides for this year’s classes. One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching a religious education class is the opportunity to grow in your own
faith and prayer life. You will become part of a joyful microcommunity in our parish: children, parents & teachers learning together to be better disciples of Jesus.
Training is ongoing, and full support will be available for all
catechists… Please call Helene!

Come a little early and unwind in our cool, --but
definitely not chilly--air conditioned church.
Join us in praying the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary
one half hour before the 5:00 p.m., 8:00 a.m., and 10:00
a.m weekend masses. It's a great way to bring your cares
and concerns to our Mother Mary. Our intention for
August will be for all those who serve us as first
responders, and their families. Your personal intentions
are always included.
If you enter the church while the rosary is in progress,
please feel free to join in at any point; we appreciate
your added voices!

COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC WOMEN NEWS
Thanks to all who had time to attend the last minute
picnic at my house., August 19th. You ladies all are
such good cooks and bakers. It was a fun afternoon at
the lake.
I am sorry I forgot to take the August meeting date out
of the church calendar. Thanks for coming the meeting
that was canceled due to our expected trip to Applewood
Estate. I will double check the calendar from now on.
Our September plans have changed. Sharon agreed to
cancel the September Salad luncheon at her home. At
the same time it came to my attention that along with the
repairs to the rectory conducted by Fr. Robert, there
were many needs in the rectory home. On Wed,
September 7, at 6:30 in the Kitchen Half Grand Hall,
the CCW will sponsor a household shower for the
Rectory. It has been over 20 years since we last did this
and many things have worn out. I hope to have a list of
items the priests are in need of in the rectory to pass out
prior to the event.
Some ladies may want to go together to purchase a
gift. Please bring your unwrapped gift and a card or
note with your name or names. The shower is open to
all parishioners who care to attend.
Light snacks will be served. Please call Kathy 629-1173
or Sandy 629-3994 with questions or suggestions for
this evening.
Remember to thank God daily for your faith and the
freedom to practice it. Pray for world peace and those
working to make it work.

TRAFFICKING: Black Market for Human Organs
How many of you picked up on the term "organ
trafficking" from last week's article? This term drove
my research. What is organ trafficking? Organ
trafficking is when organs are taken from a person and
sold for use in another. The taking of the organs is
through unfulfilled promises of education, jobs, or
money; and in some countries, the organs are taken by
force - even removing hearts from living victims.
What are some of the organs being trafficked? They
include blood, limbs, eyes, coronary arteries, intestines,
hearts, kidneys, livers, skin, and bone marrow. Kidneys
make up 75% of this illegal trade. In many cases, the
donor dies from infections caused from unclean
facilities where these surgeries take place.
In the United States, a database of waiting recipients and
their medical information helps in the delivery of
donated organs. This does not mean that we are free
from the black market trade, but our laws and
procedures make it more difficult for this trade to
flourish.
It is thought that many of the missing young people
(teens through twenties) are fatal victims of organ
trafficking.
Please pray to end all forms of Human Trafficking and
call the hotline to report any suspicious activity - 8883737-888.

Celebrate God’s Mercy With Us
On August 21st, twenty years ago,
while tearfully praying before the
traumatically injured body of my
sister Regina, I pleaded with God
not to take her from me. In His
mercy He answered my prayer in
such a positive way that it has
changed my life. In Thanks giving
to God, we would like to invite
everyone to celebrate with us
following the 8 am and 10 am
Masses with coffee and donuts,
which we will donate for this
celebration.
Do you feel a strong desire to pray for others? You may be called by
God to the Ministry of Healing Prayer. This workshop is to help form
those who feel called to this Ministry, with guidelines and an
understanding of the spiritual gifts often used. Cost:$15
