2013 ANNUAL REPORT A Letter from the President of the Board of Governors This report recognizes and honors the incredible accomplishments of Hill-Stead Museum’s donors and volunteers. Without the support of generous individuals, foundations and corporations, the museum could not offer such a broad range of educational programming and community activities for visitors of all ages. An oasis both for residents of Greater Hartford and for guests from around the country and the world, Hill-Stead’s 152-acre property boasts not only a 1901 Colonial Revival house and renowned art collection, but beautifully maintained lawns and gardens, rambling stone walls and meadows, and a network of trails through the woods. It is no wonder that over 48,000 annual visitors take advantage of this setting as a place for learning, reflection and enjoyment. This past year students from around the state toured the museum and were enchanted by the world-class paintings, prints and sculpture on display in the period rooms. As they learned about art and architecture, they also discovered what life was like for Alfred and Ada Pope and Theodate Pope Riddle. Many students participated in hands-on art making activities through funding from key educational grants, and all left Hill-Stead with a deeper appreciation for the arts and a wonderful memory to last for years to come. Fortunately, learning experiences at Hill-Stead are not limited to children, and many notable events and activities are held during the year, both indoors and out. In 2013 we celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the restoration of the Sunken Garden, and remarked on Beatrix Farrand’s timeless design. We also celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the discovery of prehistoric mastodon remains at Hill-Stead – surely a story the Pope family enjoyed recounting with their guests many times over. The 21st Annual Sunken Garden Poetry Festival boasted record attendance, with a crowd of 1,200 for Inaugural Poet Richard Blanco, and 1,600 for the ever-popular Billy Collins. Hill-Stead’s Farmer’s Market attracted over 11,000 people during its 16-week season, and the weather was picture-perfect for the farmto-table Dinner on the Hill event in the fall. Additionally, the Decorative Arts Study Group completed its first full year of programs, and helped to promote a broadened knowledge of the museum’s collections through a series of lectures. A successful May Market and the Monet in May benefit event rounded out a full calendar of activities. The impressive commitment of volunteers like the Museum Guides, the Hill-Steaders, and the Garden Gang make it possible to offer such a variety of programs, and ensure that each visitor, new or returning, can enjoy Hill-Stead just as the Pope family did over a century ago. The collection of French Impressionist paintings and the decorative art and furniture on view today are exactly the same as when the family was in residence, and the Popes would be pleased to know that their fine possessions have been admired by over 880,000 people since the museum opened in 1947. Reupholstering of the piano bench, and trim replacement on the bench in the drawing room bay window. Two new ICOM portable radios for Museum Security and Interpreters. Conservation work was performed on the carpet in Theodate’s bedroom by color matching the fibers, toning several small areas of wear with textile paint, and “heat setting” for stability. Extra carpet fibers were woven in to reintroduce appropriate texture for better visual aesthetic. – Dr. & Mrs. John Walker – Marie H.
