2015 ANNUAL REPORT A Letter from the President of the Board of Governors Dear Members and Friends, Our 2015 Annual Report proudly recognizes the generous and outstanding donors and volunteers who make it possible for Hill-Stead Museum to bring art, architecture, and history to life for over 30,000 visitors each year. On the National Register of Historic Places, Hill-Stead’s 1901 Colonial Revival house and bucolic 152-acre estate offer an unparalleled cultural experience for visitors young and old. There are so many things that can be seen “only at Hill-Stead,” from the finest French Impressionist paintings and Japanese woodblock prints to the exquisite decorative arts which complete Alfred A. Pope’s eclectic collection. Touring Hill-Stead, for the first time or the hundredth, will take you back to an era of creativity, forward-thinking conversation, and an appreciation for the peace and tranquility provided by the natural world. In 2015, the museum’s ever-popular Sunken Garden Poetry Festival welcomed former United States Poet Laureate Ted Kooser and Pulitzer Prize-winner Vijay Seshadri. It also hosted a Celebration of Asian Poetry with readings in seven languages. Student programming introduced several thousand young learners to poetry, art and history through enriching hands-on projects, and members and friends enjoyed scholarly lectures, unique musical performances, and a conversation with Dead Wake author Erik Larson on the R.M.S. Lusitania disaster, which our founder narrowly survived. Speaking of surviving, it is no small feat that Hill-Stead Museum has kept its doors open to the public for nearly 70 years. In addition to individual and organizational contributions, funding from the State of Connecticut’s Department of Economic and Community Development has allowed the museum to address important capital restoration projects throughout the past year. A new roof on the 33,000 square foot historic home and carriage barn, and upgrades to heating, cooling, and fire suppression systems are just a few of the projects accomplished in 2015. As with any historic property, there is always a new project to address, and the museum’s Trustees and Board of Governors are constantly striving to make Hill-Stead a more sustainable organization, inside and out. Hill-Stead Museum is fortunate to list so many passionate members, annual fund contributors, corporate sponsors, and grant making organizations on the following pages. Gifts to the museum in all sizes, as well as donations of time and talent from volunteers, make it possible for Hill-Stead to welcome visitors from across the state and around the world.
