Small beginnings
Brosna Press began life in Kieran Guinan’s spare room
at his home in Ferbane, Co. Offaly in 1959. He began
printing tickets, cards and handbills on a small handoperated printing press and the fledgling business began
to grow. Kieran’s pursuit of excellence in print remains the
corner-stone of the business today. The business continues
to be family-run, with two sons Ciarán and Diarmuid,
and Kieran’s wife Maura, along with a dedicated team
of design and print professionals, carrying on the tradition
of excellence in all aspects of design and print.

Scholars came from far and near to
study and pray at Clonmacnoise on
the Shannon while sacred masterpieces in precious metal, manuscript

treasures attracted fearsome, spinechilling destruction
and devastation. Church ruins with stone crosses
and round towers speak to us
across the centuries.

Kings and beggars sought burial in monastic
grounds. Croghan Hill has been a burial
place since prehistoric times. Kings of Ossory
repose inside the great enclosure
at Seirkieran. A wonderfully crafted shrine containing the bones of St Manchan is on display in
the parish church at Boher, near Lemanaghan. It is
said that Colum Cille in distant Iona longed
to revisit his favourite monastery near the ancient
Slighe Mór at Durrow. Birr’s ancient monastic past
is commemorated in a handsome facsimile of the
ninth century MacRegol Gospels now on display in the
Pugin-designed Library.

A Paganini theme is transformed into pure Rachmaninov
in the Rhapsody; brilliant variations ranging from the
virtuosic and sweepingly romantic to the lyrical and
tender.
Sarah Chang auditioned for the Juilliard aged five, played
Paganini with the New York Philharmonic three years
later, and by nine was one of the youngest violinists ever
recorded. Now one of the most sought-after artists of her
generation, this dynamic performer makes her RTÉ NSO
début with the mighty Brahms Concerto.
In Mussorgsky’s Pictures walk through the Tuileries
Gardens where chattering woodwind echo squabbling
children at play. Journey into the Catacombs of Paris, with
colossal pillars of bellowing brass. Finally, a vision of the
Great Gate of Kiev – a kaleidoscope of colour and
clanging bells in imperial Russia. Mussorgsky’s original
for piano, in Ravel’s masterly orchestral arrangement.

A PROFILE OF POVERTY & EXCLUSION IN OFFALY
OFFALY LOCAL ANTI-POVERTY STRATEGY
4.1 Introduction
2008–2013
This section profiles poverty in County Offaly within a national context and analyses poverty across the five lifecycle areas identified in the National Action Plan for Social Inclusion 2007–2016. The profile presented here is
not meant to be comprehensive but aims instead to give a high-level sense of what poverty in Offaly is like, who
it affects, and where it is to be found. Because poverty and exclusion are inter-linked across and through sectors,
in terms of both causes and effects, the same indicators will sometimes appear under different headings below.
4.2 The Headline Story
Before spelling out the detail, it’s appropriate to present a summary of Offaly’s poverty picture. The headlines here
can be laid out as follows, assuming the known national rates (EU-SILC: 2006) apply pro-rata to the County:
anyone with an income of less than €192.74 a week in 2005 was considered to be below the
income poverty line … it’s likely that over 13,000 people in Offaly fell into that category
some 7% of Ireland’s population fell into the consistent poverty category in 2005 … in Offaly
that means probably well over 5,000 people are consistently poor
one-in-ten of Ireland’s 0–14 year old children live in consistent poverty … in Offaly that
amounts to just over 1,600 children
27% of lone parents are in consistent poverty … in Offaly that means some 700 lone
parents and their families
the proportions of some other groups in society which were in income poverty in 2005 were:

3.2 POPULATION & SETTLEMENT
Offaly is an inland county
centrally located
in Ireland. It shares
boundaries with
seven other counties in the
provinces of Leinster, Munster and
Connaught.
OFFALY SPORTS PARTNERSHIP
Until recently, only 18km of national
primary roadways passed through the
county (the N7 at the extreme southern
tip of the county and the N4/6 to the
north). The county’s capital town of
Tullamore is one of the three linked
Midland Gateway Towns identified in the
National Spatial Strategy. This status
should see substantial growth and improved infrastructure in Tullamore
town and the area of the county covered by the gateway link (below).
STRATEGIC PLAN
2008–2010
SECTION THREE
MULLINGAR
OFFALY
Based on the 2006 Census, the population of County Offaly is 70,868 persons. This represents a 20% increase in
10 years.
Midland Region population growth targets suggest a growth in the population
of the county to 85,000 people by
2015 and 93,000 by 2020.
An analysis shows age cohorts of the
population to be quite evenly distributed
up to the age of 50 years (see table).

EUROPE
In the past decade or more, Ireland has achieved
very significant economic progress in many areas,
including job creation, exports, education and
research & development.
Global competitive advantage with
access to Irish and European markets
Ireland is poised for further expansion. We have
one of the youngest populations in Europe – over
36% under 25 years of age. Numbers in the 15 – 64
age-groups will rise by 700,000 in the next 15
years. The overall population will grow by 30%
to over 5.3 million by 2020.

A consistent Government policy of creating a
stable economic environment that is supportive of
the needs of business and investors underpins this
national success story. This policy has led
to a dynamic indigenous industry sector and
the attraction of almost 1,000 multinational
corporations who have chosen Ireland as their
strategic international base.
Birr offers a most attractive proposition to those
considering investment in Ireland, whether they
are foreign direct investors who seek a lucrative
European base or those setting up or expanding
an Irish-owned enterprise.
The progressive town and its hinterland have
a skilled and well-educated workforce, good
infrastructure, first-class connectivity including
broadband access, modern services, and a wide
range of accommodation options. You will find
a superb quality of life in Birr with moderately
priced housing, outstanding heritage and leisure
amenities.
