Evening of Music
In Support of the Beach House Theatre
February 13th
After two successful seasons Beach House Theatre board of directors is eager to provide
the company with a healthy budget. Supporters no doubt recall how quickly the tickets sold out
previously, and this will likely occur again this year. However ticket sales alone cannot cover the
many costs involved. Having organized viable fund raising events such as pub and restaurant
nights, the board is always looking for new occasions to interest the public. When BHT supporters attend these evenings, they not only have a great time, they are also ensuring that quality
theatre will continue. The upcoming February 13th Night of Music at the Wheelhouse Theatre
begins the 2014 season.
Beach House Theatre is looking forward to our 2014 production of William Shakespeare’s
The Comedy of Errors. The story follows two sets of twins who were separated at birth. Twenty-five years have passed and the twins find themselves in the same city. Mistaken identities,
misguided love, wrongful imprisonment and
wild mishaps lead to an incredibly crazy day for
the twins. This production is set in the Caribbean in 1725 on an island populated by pirates
and privateers. This is one of Shakespeare’s
most farcical plays and will surely be a wild,
fun filled evening of physical comedy and playful word banter.
After the success of Munsch Ado About
Nothing, we will once again present another
children’s show by Debbie Patterson. Join
Athos, Porthos and Aramis as the The Three
Munschketeers bring to life five Robert Munsch
stories We Share Everything, Just One Goal!, Where is Gah-Ning?, Moose!, and Wait and See.
If you are young or young at heart you don’t want to miss the fun.
“If music be the food of love, play on; give me excess of it . . . .” The Beach House Theatre Society is delighted to provide our supporters with an evening of excessively talented local performers. Each of these musicians is donating his or her entertainment as a fundraising
gesture. For the price of a $25 ticket BHT music enthusiasts can enjoy eight artists sharing their
music at the Wheelhouse Theatre at Earl Marriott Secondary.
Heidi McCurdy is a well-known local multi-talented artist, vocalist, songwriter and coach.
She is influenced by an array of genres including jazz, world, gospel and soul that result in a
modern pop sensibility. She has won awards in songwriting competitions as well as for her singing. She has been a featured vocalist and a guest singer with a number of well-known bands in
the Vancouver and San Francisco areas. She has performed in Europe, the USA and Canada,
including the Vancouver International Jazz Festival in 2005 with Bittersweet. Heidi extends her
love of music through her teaching. Having long ago discovered the music within herself, she
now helps others to find their own voices. She is truly a maker of music.
Glenda Rae and Brett Wade together entertain and delight audiences with both their
interpretations of popular songs and their performances of original material. Their musical instruments are two superb voices and a
guitar. Casual listeners and music aficionados alike are drawn to these artists. Glenda
Rae, having grown up in a musical family, has been surrounded by music all her
life. As both a trained and intuitive singer,
Glenda serves the songs she sings, regarding herself as the vehicle for the music
she creates. She is also an accomplished
songwriter. Collaborating with musician,
composer and arranger Miles Black, she
has written melodies and lyrics to over 400
songs in a variety of genres including pop,
soul, jazz and new country. Brett Wade is
a veteran of the West Coast music scene.
His guitar playing and background vocals
are heard in dozens of recordings including
the feature guitar solo in Valdy’s “Play Me a
Rock and Roll Song”.
Jordan Carrier, singer and songwriter, gained a strong following with the indie-rock band
Cozybones. Songs such as “Disease” took the band to a win on VTVs Dreamseekers and Tom
Harrison of The Province named it “one of the top 10 indie albums of the year”. When Cozybones disbanded, Jordan continued working on a solo album, Absence of Wonder. The single
“Club People” propelled Jordan into the coveted Fox Seeds Competition winner’s circle. Subsequently, he opened for groups such as Loverboy, Marcys Playground, Daniel Wesley, Wide
Mouth Mason, and The Odds. As part of the band the Soviets, Jordan and band members continued to receive critical acclaim for melodic creativity.
Oliver Gannon is an internationally recognized jazz guitarist. Oliver’s
love of music began as a child in Dublin. A self-professed ‘late starter’ Oliver
was a teenager when he bought his first guitar, a Gibson ES-124. By then his
family had moved to Winnipeg. First learning a few chords from his father, a
professional pianist, Oliver was hooked. He studied jazz and played with jazz
guitar king Barney Kessel, then attended Boston’s Berklee School of Music.
He has lived in Crescent Beach and played in Vancouver since 1969. Oliver
has performed at many major jazz festivals in Europe and North America. His
artistry is recorded on many jazz records; the duo album recorded with tenor saxophonist Fraser MacPherson, won the 1982 Juno Award for best jazz
album. He has performed with numerous groups such as The Oliver Gannon
Quartet (with Miles Black, Miles Hill and Blaine Wikjord), The Oliver Gannon/
Patty Hervey Quartet (with Al Wold and John Nolan) and The Ian McDougall
Sextet. In 2003, the Canadian Jazz Awards elected Gannon “Jazz Guitarist
of the Year”. Now semi-retired, Oliver’s quartet performances at Vancouver’s
the Cellar have been delighting audiences for over four decades.
And then there is the Proznick family—Dave, and his “children” Jodi,
Kelly and Tim. Dave Proznick not only shared his musicianship as a Surrey high school band
director for 29 years, but he and his wife, Pat, engendered their love of music in each of their
kids. During a teaching career spanning 37 years, Dave has been recognized locally, provincially, nationally and internationally as a “master teacher of music”. Google him and the list of
his awards and honors spews forth. Not only is Dave a musician whom audiences are fortunate
to hear, but his legacy of encouraging his students to excel in jazz ensembles, concert bands,
and individually is a gift that will endure for decades. His name pops up regularly as the mentor
of many professional musicians; he is equally proud of having made the difference in the lives of
innumerable former band students whose lives he enriched.
Jodi Proznick is an internationally known bassist. After contributing her skills in her father’s Semiahmoo Secondary School band
program, Jodi won the General Motors Award of Excellence as one of
the top young musicians in Canada. From there her awards continued
leading her to opportunities to perform in New York with Ingrid Jensen
and in Detroit to open for Geri Allen. In Vancouver’s 2004 International
Jazz Festival, The Jodi Proznick Quartet was awarded the Galaxie Rising Star of Vancouver; Jodi and her quartet have received two Canada
Council grants. She has become a top call bassist, recording and performing with such international stars as David “Fathead” Newman and
Kitty Margolis, opening for Oscar Peterson, and accompanying Michael
Buble. Like her Dad, Jodi is also a teacher, on faculty at Capilano University; additionally she adjudicates and is a clinician nationally and
internationally.
Kelly Proznick is a conductor, music educator and musician. She
is the choral director and Fine and Performing Arts Department Head
at New Westminster Secondary School. This music program includes
15 large ensembles and numerous
chamber groups and combos. Carrying
on the Proznick tradition of distinction,
Kelly’s conducting skill has earned
New Westminster Secondary ensembles recognitions of excellence at local
and national music festivals. Kelly has
performed as a both a trombonist and
vocalist in a wide range of musical
groups. She has served as a clinician
and workshop leader with young bands
locally, provincially, and in Alberta.
Tim Proznick is a professional drummer and percussionist, and
has become one of Vancouver’s most
sought after musicians. His credits
include local recordings with Rap/Hip
Hop artists like Mocha Only, Swollen
Members, Soulstream, and many other
artists. Tim plays with Mostly Marley, a
band formed in 2003 focusing on Classic Reggae. The bass, guitar, vocals
and drum quartet chose their name
to answer the question, “What kind of
music do you play?” Their answer?
“Classic Reggae by various artists, but
mostly Marley.” Playing around BC,
they have performed at North Vancouver’s The Rusty Gull and Kamloops’
The Blue Grotto for five years. Their
supporters enjoy regular appearances
at the Yale and Fairview in Vancouver,
as well as at various music festivals.
