Eastern Michigan University - 2007-08 Roster
Name

2007-08 EMU wrestling outlook
In just his first season at the helm of the Eastern
Michigan University wrestling program, head coach Derek DelPorto set the bar high for years to come. The Eagles posted an 8-7 regular-season record, the best mark
since the 1990-91 campaign, and improved on their finish at the Mid-American Conference Championship with a
fifth place finish.
The Green and White closed out the 2006-07 regular
season with an impressive 5-1 mark in the month of February, including a five match winning streak with victories
over Buffalo, Clarion, Duquesne, Wagner and Eastern Illinois.
DelPorto coached six wrestlers to place finishes at
the MAC Championship, the most since the 1995-96
campaign in which eight wrestlers placed.
The Eagles were showered with post-season accolades, highlighted by a No. 12 national ranking in the
National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Academic Top 30. In addition to a national academic team
ranking, four Eagles were selected to the Academic AllMAC squad; Tony Lyssiotis-a two-time selection, Zack
Donofrio, Chris Jenkins and Cory Mancuso.
The Eagles lost valuable leadership and experience
with the departure of seniors Jermain Thompson, Nick
Conklin, Charlie Walker and Lyssiotis. Thompson, the
149 pound MAC Champion and lone Eagle qualifier for
the NCAA Tournament, led the Eagles with a career-high
23 wins last season. Conklin, a two-time place winner at
the MAC Championship, was second in wins, notching
20. Lyssiotis, an Academic All-MAC selection, finished
third in at 197 pounds at the MAC Championship and
was third in wins last season with 19.
DelPorto is excited about the future of Green and
White wrestling and eager for his second season to
begin, “EMU wrestling is moving in the right direction,”
mentioned DelPorto. We are working as a complete unit
to achieve long term results. With the new attitude and
new coaching staff comes a new enthusiasm. I know it's
going to take time. I'm a realist with realistic goals and
a realistic time frame in mind and I firmly believe the end
results will be very positive.”
The 125 pound weight class is open and will most
likely see a freshman fill the void. The top candidate is
Mike Maguire. Maguire, a three-time state qualifier,
placed seventh at the state championship and was a district and regional runner-up during his junior season. In
his senior campaign he posted a 58-3 record en route
to the Division I title, as well as the district and regional
crowns.
After a redshirt year, 133 pound sophomore Sean
Clair will look to pick up where he left off his freshman
year in the 133 lbs. weight class, posting a 28-11 overall
record and an 11-3 dual meet mark on the year. Fourthplace finishes at his first MAC Championship and at the
Southern Scuffle gave Clair the experience of a seasoned
veteran after just one year collegiate competition.
Redshirt sophomores Zach Donofrio and David Pienaar will battle for the starting position at 141. Donofrio finished last season with a 14-11 overall record and a
2-2 dual mark in conference action. Pienaar was a transfer from Slippery Rock University where he was an NCAA
Qualifier. Pienaar was also ranked No. 4 in the 141-pound
weight class in the MAC preseason rankings.
The 149-pound class will see a new face in the starting lineup this season after the departure of NCAA Qualifier and 2006-07 MAC champion Jermain Thompson. In
the front running for the starting nod are Drew Lesko
and Josh Moulton. In limited open action last season,
Lesko carded a 4-6 record while Moulton posted a 5-5
overall record.
Cory Mancuso returns as last year’s starter at 157.
Mancuso, a Slippery Rock transfer, collected a 16-12
mark in his first year wrestling for the Eagles. He posted
a 2-3 dual mark in MAC action and was ranked the No. 3
wrestler at 157 in the annual preseason MAC rankings.
Also, seeing a new face in the starting line-up will be
the 165-pound weight class after the departure of Nick
Conklin. Leading candidates for the job include freshman
Derek Foore and Cleveland State transfer Kyle Chittick. Foore was a three-time state runner-up, each time
in a different weight class (135, 145, 160). He set the
school and county record, totaling 170 wins in his career,
including 92 pins. Chittick enters the season ranked No.
4 in the preseason MAC rankings.
Redshirt senior Charlie Pienaar will be the leading
candidate for the starting nod at 174. A transfer from
Slippery Rock University, he is ranked No. 3 in the preseason edition of the MAC rankings.
In the lead at 184 is Josh Lewis. Lewis spent most of
last season at 174. He posted a 7-15 record on the year
and a 5-9 dual meet mark.
Junior John McClure moves up to the 197-pound
class after competing in the at 184 last season and will
likely be the starter once the Eagles commence dual
meet action in early December. Last season McClure
posted an 11-13 mark for the Green and White.
The heavyweight class will also receive a makeover
with Charlie Walker graduating. Redshirt freshman
David Wade leads all contenders. Challengers include
freshmen Dominic Doyle, Wes Schroeder, and Matt
Pettigrew.
The Eagles will start their season competing in two
open tournaments, the EMU Open, Nov. 3, and the Michigan State Open the following week, before starting dual
action in early December.

Eastern Michigan’s 2006-2007 recruiting class did something no other recruiting class in EMU wrestling
history had done before; achieve a nationally ranking. Intermat Wrestling ranked the Eagles No. 23 in the

Derek DelPorto
Derek DelPorto enters his second season at the
helm of the Eastern Michigan wresltling program
this year.
In just his first season, DelPorto directed the
Eagles their first winning record since the 1990-91
campaign, posting an 8-7 mark. He also led the
Green and White to only the second Mid-American
Conference dual victory in the past decade, a 28-10,
home defeat over Buffalo. At his first MAC Championship, two of DelPorto’s student-athletes wrestled
for a weight class championship; Jermain Thompson
at 149 and Tony Lyssiotis at 197. Thompson would
go on to win the MAC Championship, qualifying for
the NCAA Championship in Auburn Hills, Mich.
DelPorto, a former All-American wrestler while a
undergraduate at Slippery Rock University, returned
to his alma mater as the head coach for the 200405 season. DelPorto and his 2005-06 team made
the most of the school’s final wrestling season, announced at the start of the year, winning the team
championship at the NCAA Division I East Regional
Championship and advancing a tournament-record
10 wrestlers to weight-class championship final
bouts while recording a school record-tying four
individual titles.
In addition, SRU sent a school-record five wrestlers
to the 2006 NCAA Division I National Championship.
For his efforts, DelPorto was named NCAA Division
I East Regional Coach of the Year. His 2004-05
Slippery Rock squad was the NCAA East Regional
runner-up, and had three NCAA Division I championship qualifiers and three Academic All-Americans.
DelPorto began his coaching career as an assis-

tant coach at Slippery Rock from 1999-2000 before
moving on to Oklahoma University as an assistant
from 2000-02. From 2002-04, DelPorto was an assistant wrestling coach at Cornell University before
returning to his alma mater to take over the head
coaching duties in 2004.
The 31-year-old DelPorto (April 10, 1976) grew
up in Erie, Pa. and graduated from Cathedral Prep
in Erie, Pa. in 1994. DelPorto went on to wrestle
as a collegian at Slippery Rock where he recorded
the third-best record in school history at 116-38
in his four seasons. He earned NCAA All-America
honors in 1999 after finishing in eighth place in the
heavyweight classification at the NCAA Division I
championships. He was also a three-time East Regional champion, winning the heavyweight titles in
1998 and 1999 and capturing the 177-pound crown
in 1996. DelPorto also won the PSAC heavyweight
title in 1998.

season. Bolyard won a school-record 21 straight
matches during his senior campaign.
Following his senior season, Bolyard won the
Chick Sherwood Award, presented annually to
CMU’s most valuable wrestler. He ranks seventh
all-time with 109 career wins and his 22 falls are
tied for the 10th most in school history.
He finished second at the MAC Championshipseach of the first three years of his collegiate
career, and each time earned a wild card berth to
the NCAA Championships. His best performance
at nationals came as a junior in 2004, when he
strung together four straight wins in the consolation bracket en route to a sixth-place finish and AllAmerica honors.
Bolyard also claimed a championship at the

At the 1999 NCAA Championships in
University Park, Pa, Mike Feeney was
the lone EMU representative. He made
the most of it, finishing eighth to earn
All-America honors. Feeney accomplished his deed amid two obstacles.
First, he lost his opening match and had to win three in a row to make
All-America, which he did. Second, he wrestled the entire tournament
with a badly injured knee. The injury became worse with each match.
After his loss in the fifth round of consolations, Feeney was unable to
wrestle and forfeited the seventh-place match. Feeney also qualified
for the 2000 and 2001 NCAA Championships at 174.

Joel Smith was the second EMU wrestler to earn NCAA Division I All-America
status. He did so by finishing fifth at
158 pounds at the 1989 NCAA Championships, the highest finish ever by an
Eastern Michigan University wrestler at
the Division I level. Smith was also the MAC Tournament Champion
at 158 in 1989.

Eastern Michigan University is located in historic Ypsilanti, about 10 miles east of Ann Arbor, 40 miles
west of Detroit and just 20 minutes from Detroit Metropolitan Airport. It is an area rich in academic,
research, technological and recreational resources. The University also has sites in Livonia, Jackson,
Traverse City, Flint, Detroit and Monroe.
EMU’s 800 plus-acre campus of scenic flora and wooded areas includes 18 miles of walkways and jogging trails and has 122 buildings throughout the academic and athletic campuses. Eagle Crest – Eastern
Michigan’s conference center, golf course and resort – is located on the banks of nearby Ford Lake.
Recently named “A Cool City,” by Michigan’s Governor Jennifer Granholm, Ypsilanti plays a leading
role in industry and education. The city and the University have forged close ties that have lasted 158
years.
In 1849, with the passage of Act No. 138, the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of
Michigan formally paved the way for the establishment of Michigan State Normal School, with the exclusive purposes of instructing persons in the art of teaching; providing a good common school education;
and giving instruction in the mechanic arts, husbandry, agricultural chemistry and the laws of the United
States.
Since its inception, Eastern Michigan, first as a Normal School, then as a College and finally as a
University, has grown and developed to respond to the ever-changing needs of society. Over the years,
EMU has educated thousands of sons and daughters of Michigan, the nation, and the world.
The University currently serves nearly 24,000 students who are pursuing undergraduate, graduate,
specialist, doctoral and certificate degrees in the arts, sciences and professions. In all, more than 400
undergraduate and 167 graduate majors, minors and concentrations are delivered through the University’s Colleges of Arts and Sciences; Business; Education; Health and Human Services; Technology, and
its graduate school.
Eastern Michigan’s exceptional faculty, students and alumni include CEOs from major businesses; a
National Student Teacher of the Year, National Teacher of the Year, numerous Fulbright Scholars and Milken
Family Foundation National Educators award winners; and several Michigan Teachers of the Year;
Recent University honors include EMU’s College of Business being designated by Princeton Review
as one of the nation’s 143 most outstanding business schools; and the College of Education’s recognition by US News and World Report for its long tradition of producing outstanding educational personnel.
The University is proud of the fact that it was the first state supported institution to admit women, and
that it is consistently cited by US News and World Report for its commitment to diversity. “Black Issues
in Higher Education” recently recognized EMU for the number of African-American students who earn
undergraduate degrees.
Eastern Michigan University is fully accredited
by the Higher Learning Commission of the North
Central Association of Colleges and Schools and 30
professional associations.
Degrees
The Division of Academic Affairs delivers programming through five degree-granting colleges and

the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. During
Gragg’s first year as athletic director at EMU, the
athletics program set a school and Mid-American
Conference (MAC) record by capturing a remarkable eight team conference championships
and finishing runners-up in two other sports.
The MAC-record eight team championships
eclipsed the mark of six held jointly by Central
Michigan (2003-04) and Western Michigan
(1984-85).
Gragg became Eastern Michigan’s 11th athletic
director after spending the previous six years at
the University of Arkansas. He first joined the
U of A in 2000 as an associate athletic director
and was promoted to senior associate athletic
director in 2003 and then to deputy athletic
director. In his tenure at Arkansas, Gragg was
responsible for various areas including: athletic
administration, sport program oversight, marketing, sports information, recruitment, budget,
student-athlete support, compliance, facilities
and game management, fund-raising and research.
During his career, Gragg has published several
articles and editorials on intercollegiate athletics
as well as a nationwide study on sports-related
gambling. He is a former member of the NCAA’s
Minority Opportunities & Interests Committee,
having served as cochair of the committee
in 2004-05. Gragg also served as a member
of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Northwest
Arkansas Board of Directors and as a member
of the American Heart Association, Northwest
Arkansas Board of Directors. He currently serves
as a member of the NCAA’s Academic/Eligibility/
Compliance Cabinet and as a member of the
NACDA Division IA Athletic Directors Scholarship
Ad Hoc Steering Committee. Gragg also serves
as cochair of the MAC track coaches group.
A former collegiate wide receiver, Gragg lettered four years at Vanderbilt while earning his
degree. He graduated with a bachelor’s in human
development in 1992 and was a member of the
Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll
during his senior year. Gragg served from 1993
to 1995 as an academic counselor at his alma
mater before adding the title of director of student life in his final year at Vanderbilt. During his
time as a Commodore athletic administrator, he
coordinated student life and support programs
as well as supervising the academic counseling
programs for student-athletes. In 1995, Gragg
was named director of compliance & operations
at the University of Missouri. During his two years
in Columbia, he was the game event manager for
10 Olympic sports programs and served on the
Big 12 Compliance Coordinators Group during
his last year as compliance coordinator at the
university.
Named assistant athletic director for compliance at Michigan in 1997, Gragg spent three
years with oversight of the UM compliance
department. While serving in Ann Arbor, Gragg
also earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Wayne State University. He
also served on the faculty at WSU, teaching
intercollegiate sport administration and sports
marketing classes. He earned his doctorate in
higher education administration from the U of A
in May of 2004 and also taught two undergraduate courses during his tenure there as an athletic
administrator.

Student Athlete Support Services
Student-Athlete Support Services
Academic, personal and professional support are essential to college success. At EMU, Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) helps student-athletes
reach their full potential.
Our philosophy is to offer an academic support program, integrated with
the University, that will assist all student-athletes with their transition into
college. This all-encompassing support continues throughout each studentathlete’s collegiate career, until the day he or she receives a diploma, lands
a job or enters graduate school.
Being proactive rather than reactive, our staff does not wait for an academic crisis to occur. We gather important background information and build
an academic profile on each student-athlete, assessing his or her needs in
advance.
Services provided through SASS include the following: programs that focus
on student-athletes’ special needs, monitoring academic performance, providing learning assistance, assisting with registration procedures, assisting in
monitoring athletic eligibility, providing priority registration and making sure
that athletes are advised about current NCAA, MAC and University rules and
regulations.
Freshmen and transfer student-athletes encounter a major transition when
making the switch from high school or community college to a university.
These students, while adjusting to their new routines, receive extra attention
and support.
College is not easy. But with hard work and dedication from both the
student-athlete and the support staff, the student-athlete can have a successful college experience.
The success of Eastern’s student-athletes hinges on their willingness to seek
assistance from SASS as well as other University student services. SASS staff
members continually refer student-athletes to the Admissions Office, Academic Advising Center, Career Services Center, Health Services, the Records
Office, Financial Aid and The Holman Learning Center. Faculty members also
provide assistance to student-athletes through advising in course selection
and providing additional help with courses when requested.
Athletic Training and Sports Medicine
The Eastern Michigan University Sports Medicine Department has a long
history and reputation for excellence in the health care of student-athletes
and the education of athletic training students. Founding practitioners Gary
Strickland, Ron Venis and Dr. Wally Roeser envisioned a goal of first-class
prevention, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for all studentathletes. Although the department continues to grow, its primary mission
remains the same. The student-athletes participating in intercollegiate athletics receive comprehensive health care from an expansive sports medicine
team.
The Eastern Michigan University Sports Medicine staff is led by team physician Dr. David Alvarez, orthopedic team physicians Dr. Wally Roeser and
Dr. Bruce Miller, and Head Athletic Trainer Steve Nordwall. Additionally, the
staff consists of two primary care sports medicine fellows, three full-time
staff athletic trainers, two full-time athletic training clinical educators, four
graduate assistant athletic trainers and the team dentist, Don Wurtzel. Our
sports medicine staff works in conjunction with various medical professionals within the community who provide nutritional, dental, vision and other
specialized services for our student-athletes.
At Eastern Michigan University, the philosophy of the Sports Medicine staff
is two-fold: to provide a high standard of medical care through effective
preventive and management programs, and to facilitate an effective postinjury rehabilitation process for a safe return to competition. In all cases,
the ultimate well-being of each student-athlete is considered our number
one priority, not only while they compete at Eastern Michigan University, but
during their lifetime as well.
The Sports Medicine staff operates out of three campus athletic training
facilities in the Convocation Center, Bowen Field House and the Rynearson
Stadium team building.
Strength and Conditioning
The main focus of the EMU strength and conditioning program is to develop
the complete student-athlete. Everything that is incorporated into the training
program relates to success on the court.
The program is not just about lifting weights, but rather the development
of all aspects of athletic performance. These areas include speed, strength,
quickness, agility, flexibility, explosion, sports nutrition and mental toughness.
One of the main objectives of the program is to improve the players’ agility
and speed. The goal is to develop stronger and more physical student-athletes
without losing speed or flexibility.
With that in mind, our staff focuses on improving strength in the “Power
Zone.” Abdominal, lower back and hip strength are crucial for an athlete’s
success. Increasing strength in these areas decreases the chance and severity
of injury and assists in strength and power development.
EMU athletes are pushed as much as possible to prepare for competition.
The athletes are challenged through physically demanding and intense
workouts year-round. The athletes are also challenged during each workout
with some type of mental toughness/physical challenge. We train not only
the physical side of the student-athlete, but also the mental and competitive
side. While everyone lifts weights during the year, EMU Eagle student-athletes
will also condition. This places us as one of the best conditioned teams in
the country each year.
Our goal is simple: Be the best conditioned/most physical team in the
country.
A highly motivated athlete is a program’s most valuable asset. Everyone in
the country works on developing their athletes from the neck down, but at
EMU, our program strives for excellence both mentally and physically. Our
staff works to develop long-term and short-term goals for success. We work
closely with the athletes so we know exactly what they are doing and what
they need to do to improve.
Developing athletes is a year-round task for our strength staff. During
the year, the athletes will spend almost as much time in the weight room
as they do on the court. Strength and Conditioning at EMU is a full-time
commitment. There is no such thing as part-time champions. EMU athletes
work hard but have fun. The camaraderie and work ethic developed in the
weight room carry onto the field.

Ypsilanti - “Pride. Diversity.” Heritage.”
About Ypsilanti
From rolling, tree-filled suburban
neighborhoods to a vibrant urban center,
the Ypsilanti area accommodates every
lifestyle. Affordable housing, access to
state-of-the art medical care facilities and
excellent schools provide a high standard
of living. Low interest rates, reduced
property tax and Ypsilanti’s central location
between Ann Arbor and Detroit have all
worked together to create one of the state’s
strongest housing markets.
Ypsilanti’s History
Ypsilanti is located where an old Indian
trail crossed the Huron River and was,
long before the coming of the white man,
the camping and burial ground for several
native American tribes. In 1809, three
French explorers built a log structure on
the west bank of an Indian trading post
which was one of the earliest structures
in the vast, sparsely populated Michigan
territory, whose citizens, including soldiers
in forts, numbered just 4,762.
Gabriel Godfrey, proprietor of the
trading post, was followed in 1823 by
Benjamin Woodruff who, along with
several companions, established a small
settlement on the river a mile south of the
post, naming it Woodruff’s Grove, the first
settlement in Washtenaw County.
In 1824, Father Gabriel Richard,
representative in Congress
for the Michigan Territory,
urged the building of a
federal highway from
Detroit to Chicago, to be
known as the Chicago
Road. The surveying crew,
following the Sauk Indian
trail, put the crossing of
the Huron River nearly a
mile north of Woodruff’s
Grove.
In 1825, three prominent
settlers combined portions
of their own land to form
the original plat for a new
settlement at the crossing,
which was named for the
Greek Patriot General
Demetrius Ypsilanti. When a fire destroyed
the school at Woodruff’s Grove, that small
settlement was abandoned in favor of
Ypsilanti.
Travel from Detroit by stagecoach
became possible in 1830, and by 1832
three stage lines served Ypsilanti. In 1835,
the military road to Chicago was officially
opened, with new towns springing up
along its length. Three years later the
railroad from Detroit reached Ypsilanti.
The first wood frame depot was built in
1838; two decades later, a large brick
masonry station was constructed.
Adjacent to the depot, a small commercial
district arose east of the river known,
then and now, as Depot Town. Most of
the structures still standing in Depot
Town today were built within three
decades following mid-19th century.
A second business district developed
shortly after Depot Town on the west side
of the river, along the Chicago Road (later
called Congress Street, now Michigan
Avenue). Both business districts continued
to develop and diversify, resulting in a
considerable rivalry between the two
which still exists to some extent today.
Over the years, Ypsilanti grew and
flourished. The early development of the
community was influenced and enhanced
by the presence of the river and its
abundant water power.
As the years progressed the river
industries of the mid to late 19th century
yielded to manufacturing, and mills
gave way to auto-related commerce
which became the major economic force.
In 1941, Ford Motor Company built a
plant in Willow Run. That plant was quickly
converted to wartime production when the
United States entered World War II. The
famous B-24 bombers rolled off the Willow
Run assembly line one every 55 minutes.

Eagles
Since the 1991 season, Eastern Michigan University athletic teams have gone by
the nickname “Eagles.”
The Eagles name was officially adopted
on May 22, 1991, when the EMU Board of
Regents voted to replace the existing Huron
nickname and logo with the new one.
EMU originally went by the nicknames
“Normalites,” “Men from Ypsi” and various
other titles through the years before “Hurons” was adopted in 1929.
The “Hurons” first came into being as
the result of a contest sponsored by the
Men’s Union in 1929. On Oct. 31 of that year,
a three-person committee, composed of Dr.
Clyde Ford, Dr. Elmer Lyman and Professor
Bert Peet, selected the name “Hurons” from
the many entries in the contest.
The name was submitted by two
students, Gretchen Borst and George Hanner.
Hanner was working at the Huron Hotel
at the time of the contest and was no doubt
as much influenced by his place of employment as by the Huron Indian tribe.
The runner-up name in that contest
was Pioneers.
EMU began investigating the appropriateness of its Huron Indian logo after
the Michigan Department of Civil Rights
issued a report in October 1988 suggesting that all schools using such logos drop
them. The report indicated that the use of
Native American names, logos and mascots
for athletic teams promoted racial stereotypes. At that time, four colleges, 62 high
schools and 33 junior high/middle schools
in Michigan used Indian logos or names.
The EMU Board of Regents voted
to replace the Huron name with Eagles,
taken from three recommendations from a
committee charged with supplying a new
nickname. The other two final names submitted were Green Hornets and Express.
“Eastern Eagles, hats off to you!
Fight, fight, fight for ole EMU.
Look to the sky, the Eagles will fly,
the bravest we’ll defy.
... Rah,rah, rah!”

Important Questions for Prospective Student-Athletes from
Melody Reifel Werner, Associate Athletic Director for Compliance
WHEN DO I BECOME A PROSPECT?
You become a “prospective student-athlete” (PSA) when
you start ninth-grade classes. You become a “recruited
prospective student-athlete” at a particular college if
any coach approaches you (or any member of your
family) about enrolling and participating in athletics at
that college. Activities by coaches that cause you to
become a recruited prospective student-athlete are:
(1) providing you with an official visit to campus; (2)
placing more than one telephone call to you or any
other member of your family; or (3) visiting you or any
other member of your family anywhere other than the
college campus.
WHAT ARE EVALUATIONS?
An evaluation is any off-campus activity used to assess
your academic qualifications or athletics ability, which
includes visiting your high school (during which no
contact occurs) or watching you practice or compete
at any site. Currently in all sports other than football
and basketball, a college coach is limited to seven
opportunities (contacts and evaluations combined)
to recruit you and not more than three of the seven
opportunities may be off-campus contacts. Once you
sign a National Letter of Intent, you may be evaluated
an unlimited number of times by a college coach from
the college with which you have signed.
WHEN CAN COACHES TALK TO ME AND WATCH ME PLAY?
There are many specific NCAA rules which dictate when
a coach may talk to you or watch you play. These rules
vary depending on the sport and the time of year.
Often, calls are limited to a certain month or to certain
times during the month. To get more information on
what these rules are and which ones apply to you,
please visit ncaa.org or contact Melody Reifel Werner
at 734.487.2327.
WHEN CAN A COACH SEND ME LETTERS AND EMAILS?
In sports other than men’s basketball, a member
institution may not provide recruiting materials to a
prospect (including general correspondence related to
athletics) until Sept. 1 at the beginning of the prospect’s
junior year in high school. In the sport of men’s basketball,
an institution may not provide recruiting materials to a
prospect (including general correspondence related to
athletics) until June 15 at the conclusion of the prospect’s
sophomore year in high school.
WHAT ABOUT COACHES CONTACTING ME?
A contact is any face-to-face meeting between a
university coach and you or your parents. Also, any such
face-to-face meeting that is prearranged or that takes
place on your campus, at an organized competition or at
a practice involving you or your high school, prep school,
two-year college or all-star team shall be considered a
contact, regardless of the conversation. Currently in all
sports other than football, college coaches may contact
you off the college campus no more than three times.
However, a college coach may visit your high school
(with the approval of your high school principal) only
once a week during a contact period.
ARE THERE RULES FOR BOOSTERS?
In addition to general recruiting regulations, no alumni,
boosters or representatives of a college’s athletics
interests can be involved in your recruitment. There may
be no phone calls or letters from boosters. If an EMU
booster is contacting you, please call the EMU Office of
Compliance as soon as possible at 734. 487.2327.
I HAVE OTHER QUESTIONS THAT ARE NOT ANSWERED HERE.
CAN YOU HELP ME?
Sure! If you have any questions, please contact Melody
Reifel Werner via e-mail at [email protected].
Good luck and GO EAGLES!
