THE CHAMBER MATTERS
From the Chairman’s Corner...
It’s Time to ‘Make It Your Business’!
T
he title of this month’s Chamber
Matters, “Make It Your Business,”
may seem a little funny because it’s
the opposite of the popular and usually negative phrase “mind your own business.”
Well, in this case, we want you to “make it
your business to know about business.”
There are many events and exhibits happening this Fall that provide the opportunity to learn more about business in Caldwell
County.
Events like: “Caldwell is Hiring,” which
has been successful in helping the unemployed find jobs; a manufacturing exhibit
that will highlight “Made in Caldwell”
items; a Business for Breakfast event that
will provide an industry growth analysis of
where future job growth will be and a
Holiday Business Sampler that will feature
many local businesses displaying a wide
variety of merchandise making it easy to do
holiday shopping right here at home. There
also will be an event to recognize and honor
the Small Business of the Year and the
Customer Service Excellence award recipients.
The “Made in Caldwell Manufacturing
Exhibit” will be on display in the lobby of
the Caldwell Chamber of Commerce for a
month beginning Oct. 15 and will feature
items made by the different businesses and
industries across the county. I am sure you
will see many things that you didn’t know
were manufactured here. This display will
feature items from newer businesses in the
county as well as businesses that have
called Caldwell home for many years and
are part of its rich history. Plan to organize
a group from your business, church or
other organization to come by the Chamber
of Commerce to see this exhibit.
We feel sure if you take advantage of
these opportunities you
will find something new,
exciting, positive and
interesting about busiMichelle
ness in Caldwell
County. Be sure to refer
Colvard
to the calendar of
events in upcoming
newsletters for the dates and times of these
activities. Also, look for follow-up articles in
future newsletters giving an overview of
each event.
It pays to “make it your business.” There
are many good things happening in our
county that relate to business. Make an
effort to make it your business to find out
first hand all the great things that are going
on in your community so you can share
them with others.
Information = Opportunity!

THE CHAMBER MATTERS
OCTOBER 2014
A Word From The President...
Manufacturing Is Alive In Caldwell County
W
e frequently await release of the
monthly unemployment number in
Caldwell County, but it often leaves
me with more questions than answers.
Many find the number of individuals
employed to be a better indictor of our
business and employment status because it
provides us the actual number of employees working. The July 2014 labor employment number included 34,295 in comparison to 32,436 five years ago in July.
I sometimes hear conversation that
would indicate Caldwell County is pretty
much “out of business” because manufacturing jobs are gone. In reality, we still have
many manufacturing jobs. Just as other
aspects of our lives have changed, some of
the traditional methods of production have
evolved. This is a trend repeated throughout the United States, not just Caldwell
County. We see equipment and processes
being upgraded in almost every industry.
Advanced manufacturing combines hightech equipment with human input to provide an efficient outcome.
The changes in manufacturing have
come fast and furious and there are many
who predict the evolution will continue for
years to come. But, manufacturing is alive
in Caldwell County and the diverse manufacturing sectors of our business community continue to provide a substantial number
of jobs that support our local economy.
The Caldwell Chamber invites you to
drop by our offices at 1909 Hickory Blvd.,
Lenoir, NC between Wednesday, October
15 and Friday, November 14, to visit the
Made In Caldwell exhibit. We are open
Monday through Friday from 8am until
5pm. The exhibit will feature examples of
items manufactured locally as well as information about the manufacturing companies. You may be amazed to learn the
diversity of products that are manufactured
right here in Caldwell County.
In preparation for your visit to see the
Made In Caldwell exhibit, I invite you to

In the year 2014, it is old news that having a website, social
media account, or some other online presence is essential to a
business’s success. If you aren’t online, then you are already
losing to your competition. The good news is, most businesses
have an online strategy going strong. They monitor all content
on their website and are very strategically posting on social
media. However, while it’s easy to know what a business is saying to the public, knowing what the public has to say about the
business is essential as well.
The next step in staying current and relevant online is monitoring what people are saying about your brand. There are an
abundance of websites, applications, software, and tools available to monitor this. The key is just deciding which one fits your
needs best.
Google alerts is one of the top free tools available to track
what is being said online about your business. First, it is important to determine keywords and phrases that people use to find
your website. Once you have a bank of those terms, you can
have any combination of those words and phrases with your
brand found by Google to be sent to you via email. This email
contains a direct hyperlink to the article, comment, review, etc.,
where the words or phrases were located. By receiving email
alerts from Google, you will have instant access to relevant information about your brand straight from consumers.
Another great tool is Social Mention. This online tool allows a
business to brand-monitor through social media mentions. Social
mention can be used via their website, a widget to be included
on a business’s own website, or a search plugin. In any case, it
is much like a search engine you plug keywords into. However,
this tool specifically searches over one hundred social media
sites including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google, and more.
Based on search criteria Social Mention will return results with
clickable links to where the keywords were found. Some metrics
to accompany the results are also available.
These are only two free resources of the many that are available today to monitor what is being said about your brand online.
It is important to be aware of this, not only to see improvements
that can be made within your business, but also to know where
the most conversation is taking place. Knowing where people
are mentioning your brand the most, will help you better target
where to participate in conversations online.

OCTOBER 2014
Officials Welcome Laurel Park Medical Pavilion to Downtown Lenoir
On April 15, downtown Lenoir got a new neighbor when Laurel Park
Women’s Health officially reopened in its new location inside Laurel Park
Medical Pavilion at 906 College Avenue, the former site of Blackwelder
Hospital. Over the next two months Laurel Park Women’s Imaging (formerly
The Center for Breast Health) and Mulberry Pediatrics also reopened inside
Laurel Park Medical Pavilion, bringing women’s and children’s services together for the convenience of patients and families. On Saturday, September 6, officials joined together to cut the ribbon and celebrate the new facility.
The new location expanded the space of each facility, making room for
growth. “Locating women’s and children’s services together has been a goal of
this project since well before construction began on the site of Laurel Park
Medical Pavilion,” said Laura Easton, President and CEO of Caldwell. “It’s
about continuing to provide our patients with top quality health care that is
always excellent and convenient while increasing our capacity to care for more
women and children in our community.”
The ribbon cutting and open house began with comments by Laura Easton,
Parker Williamson, Chairman of the Board of Caldwell UNC Health Care;
Mayor Joseph L. Gibbons of City of Lenoir; Chairman Clay Bollinger of
Caldwell County Commissioners; and Diane Rivers, Managing Partner of
Brackett Flagship Properties. After the official ribbon cutting, attendees
enjoyed tours and children were entertained by Balloons by Becki.
Caldwell, Laurel Park Women’s Health (757-3301), Laurel Park Women’s
Imaging (757-5502), and Mulberry Pediatrics (757-5509) are divisions of
Caldwell Memorial Hospital.
