Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Community
NAPLAN
School have this week received the results of the Naplan tests that were administered to Years 3 and 5 students
in May. Individual student reports will be sent home with students today. Teachers use this data to help
inform us as a school about the overall teaching and learning in areas of Reading, Writing, Mathematics,
Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar. Please be mindful when looking at the results for your child that these
results reflect how your child performed in one test. Sometimes the results are a good indication of your
child’s progress, sometimes they do not tell the whole story as one or two errors or “lucky guesses” can
impact on the scores. Your child’s teacher will have more information about your child’s learning progress
and can discuss this with you. Term 3 parent teacher discussions will be held on Monday 5th and Wednesday
7th September. Further information will be sent home soon about booking times.
DAIRY ASSISTANCE
As part of the Victorian Government’s dairy assistance package, students with parents in the dairy farm
industry can benefit from a one-off payment through the Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF).
Students currently enrolled in government and non-government schools whose parents own, share-farm or
lease a dairy farm business; or those people whose primary occupation is working on a dairy farm, are eligible
for the payment. Consistent with the 2016 CSEF Drought response, the CSEF Dairy Assistance funding is
paid to the school that the student attends to be used towards camps, sports, excursion and/or other education
expenses for the benefit of the eligible student. These guidelines only apply to the Dairy Assistance funding
(not the CSEF payment which was paid separately and is subject to CSEF policy) . Families who received the
means-tested CSEF payment are also eligible. Families that have previously qualified for the CSEF Drought
assistance funding are not able to also access the CSEF Dairy assistance funding. A once-off amount of $375
per student will be paid to the school that the student is currently enrolled at the start of Term 3 2016. Forms
are available from the school office.
WATCH THIS SPACE - UNIFORM SURVEY
Following the suggestion from a number of parents and the PFF, School Council have discussed surveying the
school community about some possible changes to the Drouin South school uniform. The suggestion involved
moving from a sky-blue shirt to a navy-blue shirt as it will possible be easier to keep clean. Other suggestions
included the introduction of a school “hoodie” style jumper as an option and to look at different jackets for our
Year 6 students as the light blue sleeves get very dirty. Out next step is to collect some samples for display
and to run a survey. All parents will be notified of the survey as soon as we have the samples available for
viewing. Any changes (eg. New shirt) would have a phasing in time. Others such as changes to the Year 6
jacket or an optional item could start as soon as the survey results are collated and a decision is made by
school council.
EXTRA PLAY
Yesterday we held an extra play for every student who has not had their name entered in the Playground
Behaviour Book during Term 3. We had 159 students who were rewarded for making great choices in the
playground so far this term. This means around 85% of students at Drouin South Primary School have been
following school rules and showing safe and respectful behaviour towards their peers. Well done to all of
these students. This was a huge improvement from last term. Congratulations to the students in P/1B who
had 100% of students enjoying the extra play!

This term students in 5/6A have been learning about Social Justice Issues from around the world.
This theme has helped the students understand the poor conditions many children (and adults)
have to endure on a daily basis. By the end of the unit students will have a better understanding
of what we can do to improve suffering children's quality of life. Basic needs that we often take
for granted (clean water, access to education and health) are often unavailable or vastly limited
for many people around the world. One of the tasks required the students to prepare an emotive
message regarding one of these issues. Many students were horrified and saddened at what they
learnt as a result of their research. The class has also made reference to how privileged they are
to live in Australia where basic student rights are upheld in most cases. Here are some of the
student’s thoughts.
WATER
WATER IS WHAT EVERYBODY NEEDS
TO HAVE IN THEIR SYSTEM
CONSISTENTLY. IF YOU DON’T YOUR
GONNA HAVE TO HAVE A NEEDLE
THAT PUMPS WATER INTO YOUR BODY
THAN YOU HAVE TO KEEP DRINKING.
ANDREWAND XAVIER.
This week I have been learning about health
in affected countries. I have learnt that
2million kids die on their first day, 3million
die in their first week, 4 million in their first
month, and 8.8 million die before their 5th
birthday. This affects the whole world and
how the population grows. Allanah.
Water
I have learnt that some water is not just in dams or
rivers and that some water comes from underground.
In some countries people use 500-800 litres per day
and that is a lot so that is what I have learnt so far. By
Brad and Thomas
Education
This week we have been learning about education
around the world. 1 thing that stood out Jamie and I
were the amount of people that don’t go to school
every day is more than double Australia’s population.
One thing we have learnt is that there are over 860
million people around the world who don’t know how
to read or write. BY RYAN AND JAMIE
Over this week I have been
learning about water and
how it’s necessary to life. I
would like to see in the
future that more people are
able to drink safe clean
water so they don’t become
sick and sadly end up dying This week I have been learning about health, and I was surprised to learn
that 8.8 million kids die before the age of five. I would like to see this
after a couple day of life.
8.8 million change in the future

This week, we have been
learning about education in
poverty affected countries.
One thing that made me
really sad is that a lot of
schools are not child
friendly and that there isn’t
any clean water in a lot of
schools as well. It is also
really sad that over 67
million children didn’t get to
go to school today because
families can’t afford it or that
there are no schools around.
If children don’t get to go to
school they can’t do things
that we take for granted like
reading or writing! By Sian.
This week we have been learning about
either education, health, or water. My subject was health and I learnt a lot about how
kids suffered from malaria. I would like to
see malaria stop in the future. A fact I
learnt was that millions of kids die before
their fifth birthday. I think we need to be
more aware of malaria. thankyou by Ruby
This week we presented
an emotive message in
front of the class about Health.
We now know more about
what’s happening around the
world with people’s health eg.
8.8 million Children (5-)
around the world died between
1990 and 2006 .
By Lysie and Hailie– Jade
Recently, I’ve been learning
about education in developing
countries. I find it shocking
that the amount of worldwide
teachers is short by a
whopping 15 - 35 million! This
is a very serious problem because education is extremely
important. Some children do
not get the chance to go to
school because they live in very
rural areas or they need to
work to support their family. I
hope to see the amount of
people not enrolled in school
increase in years to come.
In the past two or so weeks we have
been learning about emotive
messages. Our Emotive message is
Health. When we first read the
worksheets we got in reading
groups we were horrified and also
shocked .This is what happens in
the real world. More than 100, 0000
children die each year from health
and birth trouble. This is what
causes depression to adults who
have to go through this. How
would you feel if you were one of
these people?
By Rose and Chloe
Hayden
In the past week 5/6A have been learning about
emotive language it has really made me open my
I found that water covers 71% of the Earth and eyes to the issues that this world faces now in 2016.
it is impossible to live without it. When water
evaporates it is purified, and then when it rains I now know more about health around the world.
it comes back down as completely rain water.
