Priest: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Priest: Let us pray.
Collect of the Day
Priest: Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either
desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid,
and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus
Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
People: Amen.
The people sit.
First Reading: Ruth 1:1-19a
Reader: 1 In the days when the judges ruled there was a
famine in the land, and a man of Bethlehem in Judah went to
sojourn in the country of Moab, he and his wife and his two
sons. 2 The name of the man was Elimelech and the name of
his wife Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon
and Chilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah.
They went into the country of Moab and remained there. 3 But
Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died, and she was left with
her two sons. 4 These took Moabite wives; the name of the one
was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth. They lived there
about ten years, 5 and both Mahlon and Chilion died, so that
the woman was left without her two sons and her husband.
6 Then she arose with her daughters-in-law to return from the
country of Moab, for she had heard in the fields of Moab that
the LORD had visited his people and given them food. 7 So she
set out from the place where she was with her two daughtersin-law, and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah.
8 But Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go, return each
of you to her mother's house. May the LORD deal kindly with
you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me. 9 The LORD
grant that you may find rest, each of you in the house of her
husband!” Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their
voices and wept. 10 And they said to her, “No, we will return
with you to your people.” 11 But Naomi said, “Turn back, my
daughters; why will you go with me? Have I yet sons in my
womb that they may become your husbands? 12 Turn back, my
daughters; go your way, for I am too old to have a husband. If I
should say I have hope, even if I should have a husband this
night and should bear sons, 13 would you therefore wait till they
were grown? Would you therefore refrain from marrying? No,
my daughters, for it is exceedingly bitter to me for your sake
that the hand of the LORD has gone out against me.” 14 Then
they lifted up their voices and wept again. And Orpah kissed
her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her. 15 And she said, “See,
your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods;
return after your sister-in-law.” 16 But Ruth said, “Do not urge
me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you
go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall
be my people, and your God my God. 17 Where you die I will
die, and there will I be buried. May the LORD do so to me and
more also if anything but death parts me from you.” 18 And
when Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she
said no more. 19 So the two of them went on until they came to
Bethlehem. And when they came to Bethlehem, the whole
town was stirred because of them.
Reader: The Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
The Psalm: 113 Laudate, pueri
5 Who is like the LORD our God, who sits enthroned on high, *
but stoops to behold the heavens and the earth?
1 Hallelujah!
Give praise, you servants of the LORD; *
praise the Name of the LORD.
6 He takes up the weak out of the dust *
and lifts up the poor from the ashes.
2 Let the Name of the LORD be blessed, *
from this time forth for evermore.
7 He sets them with the princes, *
with the princes of his people.
3 From the rising of the sun to its going down *
let the Name of the LORD be praised.
8 He makes the woman of a childless house *
to be a joyful mother of children.
4 The LORD is high above all nations, *
and his glory above the heavens.
Reader and People: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and
will be forever. Amen.
5
Second Reading: 2 Timothy 2:3-15
Reader: 3 Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ
Jesus. 4 No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since
his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. 5 An athlete
is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.
6 It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first
share of the crops. 7 Think over what I say, for the Lord will
give you understanding in everything. 8 Remember Jesus
Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as
preached in my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering, bound
with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound!
10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect,
that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ
Jesus with eternal glory. 11 The saying is trustworthy, for: If
we have died with him, we will also live with him; 12 if we
endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also
will deny us; 13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful—for
he cannot deny himself. 14 Remind them of these things, and
charge them before God not to quarrel about words, which
does no good, but only ruins the hearers. 15 Do your best to
present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has
no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
Reader: The Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
The people stand to sing and remain standing for the Gospel.
Hymn: 488 Be thou my vision
Words: Irish, ca. 700; versified Mary Elizabeth Byrne (1880-1931); tr. Eleanor H. Hull (1860-1935), alt.
Music: Slane, Irish ballad melody; adapt. The Church Hymnary, 1927

The Holy Gospel: Luke 17:11-19
Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.
Deacon: 11 On the way to Jerusalem he was passing along
between Samaria and Galilee. 12 And as he entered a village,
he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance 13 and
lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on
us.” 14 When he saw them he said to them, “Go and show
yourselves to the priests.” And as they went they were
cleansed. 15 Then one of them, when he saw that he was
healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; 16 and he
fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks. Now he was
a Samaritan. 17 Then Jesus answered, “Were not ten
cleansed? Where are the nine? 18 Was no one found to return
and give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 And he said
to him, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.”
Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.
The Sermon
The Rev. Mike Moffitt
Following today’s service, the sermon will be available on the church website: www.lightofchristva.org.
The Nicene Creed
The people stand and affirm the creed with the priest.
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand
of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of
God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God,
Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not
made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all
things were made. For us and for our salvation he came
down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he
became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made
man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he
rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the
living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the
Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has
spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy
catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one
baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the
resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.
Amen.
The Prayers of the People
The people kneel or sit reverently.
The leader and people pray responsively.
Leader: Let us pray for the whole state of Christ’s Church and the world. Almighty and ever-living God, in your holy Word
you have taught us to offer prayers and requests, and to give thanks for all whom you have made. We appeal to
your mercy, Gracious Lord, that you might hear our prayers.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.
Leader: Inspire your universal Church by your Spirit, granting that all who confess your holy Name may agree in the truth
of your holy Word and live in unity and godly love.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.
7
Leader: Give grace, heavenly Father, to all Bishops, Priests, and Deacons, and especially to your servant Mike, our Priest,
and Mary, our Deacon, that by their life and teaching, they may proclaim your true and life-giving Word, and rightly
administer your holy Sacraments.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.
Leader: Help us to fulfill your great commission; making disciples of all nations; teaching them to obey all that you have
commanded.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.
Leader: We ask you to rule the hearts of all who govern us, especially Barack, our President. May they administer justice,
govern wisely, and strive for the welfare and peace of the whole world.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.
Leader: Grant your heavenly grace to all people, especially these gathered here, that with meek and reverent hearts, we may
hear and trust your holy Word, devoting our lives to your righteous service.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.
Leader: We humbly ask you, gracious Lord, to comfort and strengthen all those who, in this earthly life, are in trouble, sorrow,
need, sickness, or any other adversity, especially
William Schoelwer
Chris Helsley

Leader: Lord, in your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.
Leader: We thank you, Lord, for the marvelous healing work you have done in our lives and the lives of those we love.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.
Leader: Lord, we ask your loving care for our military men and women, and their families, and for all first responders
who put themselves in harm’s way for our safety and security.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.
Leader: I invite you to add your own prayers of supplication and thanksgiving at this time.
Leader: We bless your holy Name for all your servants who departed this life in your faith and fear, praying you would grant
us grace to follow their good examples, that with them we might partake in your heavenly kingdom.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.
Priest: Grant these our prayers, O Father, for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.
Priest: Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God
8
Confession of Sin
Priest and People: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we
have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors
as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive
us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.
Priest: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all
goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life.
People: Amen.
The Peace
The people stand and greet each other with God’s peace.
Priest: The peace of the Lord be always with you.
People: And also with you.
Announcements
Also, see the last page of this booklet.
The Holy Communion
Representatives of the congregation bring the elements to the altar and the offering is collected.
Offertory
Words: St. 3, Thomas Ken (1637-1711)
Music: Old 100th, melody from Pseaumes octante trois de David, 1551, alt.;
harm. after Louis Bourgeois (1510?-1561?)
The people stand and sing The Doxology while the ushers present the offering.
The Great Thanksgiving
The people remain standing.
Priest: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Priest: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them to the Lord.
Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.
9
Priest: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of
heaven and earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. In fulfillment of his true promise, the Holy Spirit came down from heaven,
lighting upon the disciples, to teach them and to lead them into all truth; uniting peoples of many tongues in the confession of
one faith, and giving to your Church the power to serve you as a royal priesthood, and to preach the Gospel to all nations.
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing
this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:
Holy, holy, holy, Lord (Sanctus)
Music: Ronald Turner, St. Lawrence Mass. Used by permission.
The people kneel or sit reverently.
Priest: Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and
become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human
nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the
cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks
to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the
remembrance of me."
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you:
This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you
drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Priest and People:
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
10
Priest: We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his
death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the
Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may
faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all
your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and
in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever.
People: Amen.
Priest: And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say:
People and Priest: Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.
The Breaking of the Bread
The priest breaks the consecrated Bread and says
Priest: Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
People: Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia!
Priest: The Gifts of God for the people of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him
in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.
Communion of the People
If you are a baptized Christian, we welcome you to Holy Communion at Light of Christ Anglican Church. Both the bread
and the wine are offered at Communion. You may receive the wine by drinking from the cup or by dipping the wafer into the
chalice. If you do not wish to receive one of the elements, please indicate by crossing your arms upon your chest.
