A SPECIAL SEASON FOR PROVIDENCE SOCCER
While they may have come up just short in the
North Carolina 4A State Championship, the Providence Panthers Ladies Soccer team can hold their
heads high after a special season. First year head
coach Nathan Williams led the Panthers to a 23-21 season. The team received high rankings both in
state and national polls. Everything seemed to click
all season for the team. The defense was especially
stingy all season, only allowing five goals. The offense was relentless, pounding the back of the net
123 times. The appearance in the state championship game was the first for Providence since 2006.
The Panthers roster is loaded with talent in all
grades and it appears the team will stay on top as
only six players will walk across the graduation stage
next week. Top players for the team included Ellie
Deaver, committed to UNCC, and Michaela Daniels,
who will play soccer at Eastern Kentucky. Goalkeeping this season was tremendous with Lizzie Wilson
and Anna Dalton putting the other team’s goal on
lockdown. The Panthers also had great help from
Lauren Ellis who will attend Louisville after another
season at Providence, Molly McGarry, a UNC-Wilmington commitment and Kate Hickson, a UNCC commitment were also among the team leaders. Freshman sensation Mia Thillet could always be counted
on to score goals this season.
All in all, a group effort by the Providence Pan-
thers added up to a wonderful season of play. The
team members will chase further success this summer playing for different club organizations and then
gather back together in the fall to begin the chase for
a 2016 state championship.
With quality leadership and a commitment to
success at Providence High School, this team will
certainly be among the favorites to capture the gold
next season! The South Charlotte Sports Report
sends out our congratulations on a job well done by
the Panthers Soccer Team.

Max Wotell
Maddie Spurgeon
Marvin Ridge High School Baseball player Max Wotell has
been named the Architech Sports and Physical Therapy Student Athlete of the Week. Max is the son of Gene and Terri
Wotell and he plays pitcher and outfield for the Mavericks.
Max was recently named as the Gatorade North Carolina Baseball Player of the Year and was also honored as the Greater
Charlotte Hot Stove League Pitcher of the Year.
Marvin Ridge High School senior volleyball player Maddie Spurgeon has been named the Architech Sports and Physical Therapy
Student-Athlete of the Week. Maddie will head to Mars Hill
College next season to continue playing volleyball while working
towards a college degree.
Maddie plays the right side hitter in volleyball and she was a 2014
All-Conference selection for the Mavericks. She also has played
on the top National Team for the Carolina UVC Club the last four
seasons. Her role as a Senior right side hitter was to lead the team
through actions on and off the court, mentor younger players and
be a leader. Maddie’s successful high school career led to the opportunity to play for Mars Hill. She felt the school offered all the
things she wanted in a college education with the opportunity to
play volleyball.
This season Max has led the Mavericks to the 3A State Championship series with a 12-0 record and a 0.54 ERA with over
125 strikeouts in 70 plus innings of play. Max has also hit for
a .410 batting average this season. He has signed a NCAA
National Letter of Intent to pitch at the University of Arizona
next season. Max is considered by most experts to be a potential high draft choice in
the upcoming Major League Baseball Draft.
Inside the classroom Max is a B+ student and enjoys volunteering in youth baseball
programs and with his church youth group. Congratulations to Max Wotell for being
named the Architech Sports and Physical Therapy Student Athlete of the Week.
Inside the classroom, Maddie is a 3.87 student and she has also been active working
community service projects. In addition to a missions trip to Jamaica, Maddie works
with younger volleyball players to help them gain the needed skills to play on a successful level. Congratulations to Maddie Spurgeon for being named the Architech Sports and
Physical Therapy Student-Athlete of the Week.

BEYOND THE GAME WITH OWEN HALL
Written by Logan Jennes, Weddington High School, 2017
Owen Hall, son of Jennifer and
Peter Hall, is a rising senior who
plays defensive end for Charlotte
Catholic’s football team. Owen has
had great success both on the field,
and in the classroom. He is already
preparing for next year, hoping that
he and his team can get back to the
playoffs to win a state title. Let’s go
Beyond The Game to learn more
about this great athlete.
Why do you love the sport of
football?
“Because you feel the camaraderie from your teammates when
you’re out there on the field during
a game. You get to hang out with
your friends and it’s a great competitive sport. It’s a lot of fun when
you see success from your team
and how much work we all put in.”
Can you describe a typical day of training during the summer?
“During the summer, I’m in the locker room at six a.m. and out on the field
at seven doing stretches. We then break up with our position coaches and do
drills specific to our position. After that we have a small break and come back
working on special teams.”
What are some of your top athletic accomplishments?
“Making it to states this year was definitely a big one because it was really
tough to get there. Even though we lost, it was a great experience. We also
made it to the semifinals my sophomore year.”
How do you manage football practice with your school work?
“It’s tough when the season starts, especially when playoff time comes around
because it’s the beginning of the year and I have AP classes. School work
comes first then practice. After practice I come home and relax for about an
hour, shower, eat, then work really hard for about two hours to get homework done.”
How well do you perform in the classroom?
“I am currently taking 3 AP classes and have a GPA of 4.2. I am the president
of the German Club as well as a member of the National Honor Society.”
Looking past high school, what colleges have you been looking at
and are there any looking at you?
“I’ve looked a few Ivy League schools such as Brown and Colombia. I’ve gotten a few looks from small schools such as Davidson.”

JACKSON HARRIS
Charlotte Catholic High School Lacrosse player, Jackson Harris, has been awarded the Mecklenburg Area
Catholic Schools / Arbor Construction Group Good
Sport of the Week. The 18 year old son of Shawn and
Elizabeth Harris plays the offensive position of attack
for the Cougars.
Jackson began playing the sport in fifth grade, and has
committed to play lacrosse at Mercer University. His
favorite memory of this season was beating rival, Marvin Ridge, at Marvin Ridge. He worked hard all season to get the team to the state
championship this year, and cannot wait to compete again for his senior season.
Inside the classroom, Jackson is a bright student with a 3.1 grade point average.
His favorite class at Charlotte Catholic is History. Congratulations to Jackson Harris for being named Mecklenburg Area Catholic Schools/ Arbor Construction Group

Ricky Prevatte, LMBT 1154:
Totally blind from birth, his sense of touch is a true gift
- one that has been so meticulously developed and honed from a very young age since blind people
have to rely on their sense of touch so completely. So innate in his touch that doctors fondly refer to
him as "The Human CAT Scan". Ricky Prevatte has taken his 30 years of experience and developed
his practice to include the most cutting edge equipment and powerful modalities used in his profession Cold laser therapy, vibratory/percussive G5 technology, Active Isolated Stretching (AIS), and Neuromuscular
Techniques. Even chronic, degenerative conditions can improve tremendously with his treatments. If
you've tried everything else. If you've paid other professionals who hurry you in and out. It's time
to Þnd true relief.
Pain relief so complete, doctors send their patients.
RICKY PREVATTE
MASSAGE
ÒI have referred several of my patients to Mr. Prevatte who has consistently produced positive results for
my patients. Mr. Prevatte has 30 years of experience and gives patients one-on-one care returning them to
optimum function.Ó - Anthony Q. Walker PT, DPT, CSCSÓ
Adored by his clientele:
Exceptional. Attentive. Meticulous. Accomodating. Healing. ThatÕs Ricky Prevatte. My children and I are clients of
RickyÕs. My daughter is a gymnast and is in the gym 25 hours a week. I feel with the treatment my daughter has
received from the cold laser therapy to the G5 treatments has been a huge beneÞt. For every migraine, to aches from
head to toe, I have called Ricky. I highly recommend him. In sum, Ricky is wonderful! - Stafany Holmes
Ricky has been very helpful in relieving muscle soreness and pain so that I am successful on competition day!
- Hallie Peele, Gymnast
My son, Blaine, suffered a knee injury from playing baseball years ago. HeÕs been to orthopedic surgeons and had physical therapy and nothing has worked. We heard
about Ricky through the gym where my daughter does gymnastics and after two visits, BlaineÕs knee was completely better! He not only helped his knee feel better, he
taught Blaine a lot of preventative techniques through stretching and strength building. Blaine attends The Citaldel, a military college, so it was so important for his
knee to be 100%. When my son, Clayton, hurt his back playing football, we were told by a doctor he needed surgery. We were not comfortable with back surgery and
took him to a spine specialist who suggested physical therapy instread. Se we decided we should try Ricky since he helped Blaine so much. We had the same results
with Clayton and in fact, he was able to play football the next year! My daughter, Emily, is a level 9 gymnast and because of her rigorous workout, she has many
athletic stresses. We decided to try Ricky as well with her. Of course, we had great results and now she goes to see him before her meets, so she will feel 100% to
compete! Lastly, after all three of our children had such success, their father, Stacey, decided to go to him for back and shoulder pain from his Cross Fit workouts. He
had the same results as the children! Our family would highly recommend Ricky and we all continue to go to him on a regular basis. - Michelle Kuhn
Ricky helped me to recover from injuries quicker and to maintain my strength during a long season. - Keith Duncan, Weddington High Varsity Fotball Kicker
RickyÕs helped me a lot with my injuries and to be able to compete better. - Kennedy Duncan, Level 9 Gymnast / Weddington 8th grader
IÕm an Irishman who found THE POT of GOLD at the end of the RAINBOW!! His name is RICKY PREVATTE. IÕve been going to Ricky since Sept. 2014 for pain in
my left knee from a bad knee surgery. Today, the knee is Þne - I can walk again. Ricky has also relaxed my neck and lower back fusions as well as my feet. With cold
laser and the G5 machine Ricky used, heÕs a Godsend to me. Thank You sooo much. My wife also sees Ricky for her tennis pains. - George Mc, 68 years old, Charlotte
How It Works
Ricky Prevatte has integrated three basic modalities to achieve optimum results for each of his sessions. Neuromuscular Therapy balances the bodyÕs central nervous system with the
musculoskeletal system. It is a system of manual treatment protocols and neurological principles which can restore postural alignment and proper use of muscles and ßexibility. The second
is the Active Isolated Stretch Technique and is an effective treatment for deep and superÞcial fascial release. Even degenerative conditions (multiple sclerosis, Parkinsons, and degenerative
disc diseaseÉ) can improve with AIS; partly by stimulating neurogenesis (the development of nerve tissues) and helping to create new neural pathways. And now Ricky has added cold
laser therapy which immediately reduces inßammation and stimulates nerve functions and the G5 to relieve trigger points by stimulating muscle groups.

Team of the Week
Weddington Outlaws ‘05
Softball Team
The Cuthbertson Cavaliers Middle School JV baseball team finished their
season with a record of 16-2, winning the season title in Union County.
The Cavaliers went on to win the end-of-season championship tournament, beating out Monroe Middle School, Sun Valley Middle School and
finally Marvin Ridge Middle School in the championship game held on
Sunday, May 3 at Porter Ridge High School.
When did you start playing
softball?
“I probably started playing softball
when I was six years old. I started at a
young age and soon realized that I really liked the sport so I decided to stick
with it.”
Describe a typical week of
training.
“We start right after school and practice for about three hours. We start by
doing easy warmup stretches and throwing drills to loosen up. We then take
the field for defensive practice and front toss.”
How do you manage both softball and school?
“It’s definitely hard to do both. It takes a lot of time management and planning ahead. You can’t procrastinate and wait to do things the day before
they are due.”
What are some of your accomplishments on the field?
“I have received All-Conference honors and I am currently in the running for
the All-District Team.”
How well have you performed in the classroom?
“For most of high school I have been an A/B student. My GPA is currently
4.33.”
What are some community service activities that you participate
in?
“I’m in the National Honor Society and as part of the club, I have to do four
hours of community service a month. I also go to a dog shelter and walk
dogs, clean up, and help wherever it is needed.”

Page BEYOND THE GAME
WITH ELIZABETH KAESER
Written by Rachel Tomchin, University of Alabama, Charlotte Catholic Class of 2014
Ardrey Kell High School senior Elizabeth Kaeser has shown excellence on
the court throughout her high school
volleyball career. She will attend Brevard College in the fall to continue her
growth as a Student-Athlete. Elizabeth
has played with the UVC Volleyball
Club during her high school years, to
prepare for college competition. Let’s
go Beyond The Game with Elizabeth
Kaeser to learn more about her experiences on and off the court.
What position do you play in
volleyball?
“I am an outside hitter that plays six
rotations.”
What are your top three athletic
accomplishments?
“Winning the State Championship.
It was my sophomore year when
we won states so I didn’t play in the game, but I did contribute throughout
the season and the feeling of winning was the same. It was an unbelievable
feeling to win and I can still replay that moment of the last point in my head,
the reaction of everybody on the bench, on
the court and in the stands, Two- Time AllConference player, and committing to play
volleyball at Brevard College.”
What is your role on the Ardrey Kell
volleyball team?
“During my last season I was named one of
the team captains of a very young team. We
had numerous Freshman and Sophomores
that saw a lot of playing time. Coach Bell
relied on me to set a good example for the
younger girls with work ethic and intensity
on the court. As a captain I had to bring
energy and intensity in practice and games.
We had a very successful season this past
year and ended up finishing second in our
conference. We were undefeated on our home
court as well which is a big accomplishment
for our team.”
What are your plans for college?
“I have committed to play volleyball at
Brevard College next year. I chose Brevard
mainly because of the coaches and the team.
They were all so genuine and really meant
what they were saying to me. Coach Burdeau
and Coach Raye made me feel so welcomed
when I went to visit and they also have the
same competitive drive and attitude that I
have. Brevard is a very small school but after
I thought about it, it seemed like that would
be best for me to be a successful student.”
How have you performed in the classroom?
“I have always performed very well in the
classroom. It is definitely a lot to balance
school and volleyball sometimes, but I make
sure to stay focused on my school work.”
The Marvin Ridge Middle School Lady Mavericks Soccer Team went undefeated and only allowed one goal all season.

BEYOND THE GAME
WITH JOSHUA COOPER
Volume 10, Issue 1
Page 11
Ardrey Kell High School junior runner Joshua
Cooper continues to set quick times for the
Knights sprint class. With a commitment to
excellence and the unique talent of simply being
a fast kid, Joshua has logged many impressive
accomplishments for Coach Brian Zelk at Ardrey
Kell. Joshua’s father US Army Reserves Intelligence Senior Sergeant Randall Cooper, has served
as the inspiration for Joshua to succeed on the
track. The young runner discovered his talents
while his father was on missions overseas and
just over the last year has been able to perform in
front of his father. The future is very bright for
Joshua. Let’s go Beyond The Game to learn more
about Joshua Cooper.
What events do you compete in?
“I run the 200, 400 and the 800. In the 4x200
relay I run the 2nd leg, in the 4x400 I’m the first
leg also the 1st leg in the 4x800 relay when required by coach.”
What are your top times or marks in your events?
“In the 4x200 relay my fastest split time is a 22.50, in the 400 my fastest open time
is 50.03 and in the 4x400 relay my fastest split is 48.60 which I just hit at the 4A
State Meet and last 4x800 relay my fastest split was 2:03.”
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
“My favorite accomplishment is that I helped lead the relay this year to the state
meet, by getting 1st at regional’s then placed 3rd overall at the state, seeded 9th
coming into the meet it was rewarding to be able to come out the meet with a medal
and we broke the school record in the 4x400. The record is now (3:21.50) also being
back to back conference champs in the 4x400 and last year being the South Meck
8 Conference Champ in the 400 M as a sophomore and the runner up as a Junior.
We are undefeated in direct head-to head conference competition. With our relay
consisting of 3 juniors and a freshman we hope to go into the Indoor and Outdoor
State Meet next year and come out as State Champs in both. Lastly, running as a
member of the 4X 800 M relay we were third at the conference meet this year. My
time was 2:03.”
Are you involved in any community service activities?
“I am a part of Knights in Action, which is a community service program at our
school where we do community service hours and to receive recognition you have
to complete 25 hours of community service during the whole school year. I’ve been
doing this since freshman year at Ardrey Kell.”
How well have you performed in the classroom?
“My weighted GPA is a 4.11 and I am taking Honors and 2 AP courses currently in
my junior year. I was recently inducted into National Technical Honor Society. I’m
a member of National High School Scholars.”
What are your goals for the future?
“During the summer and next year, as a senior I hope to become the schools record
holder in the 400 meters and hopefully be able to fulfill my goal of becoming a college athlete and to be able to compete at the highest level I can possibly run in while
in college.”
