“I Will Be The Vine”
Dear Friends,
The vine connects us to one another. Sometimes I hear young people say,
“Why do I have to go to church. I can pray at home, or on the beach, or
in the woods…” The vine grower planted the vine and the branches have
grown from the vine and only live well if they are connected to the vine
and to one another. So it is with religion. We relate one to another, fed
by the one who feeds us the best.
“I will be the vine, and you will be the branches.
All you who live in me will have eternal life.” Liam
Lawton, a Catholic priest from the Diocese of
Kildare in Ireland, inspired by the words from today’s
Gospel, wrote a beautiful song. I’ve been singing the
song all week, and we sing it at Mass today. The lyrics
contain a reminder and an invitation – both perfect
for this First Communion weekend.
Last week, as I was entering the funeral for Cardinal George, I
received an email from a young woman who was on the pilgrimage to
Lourdes with the Cardinal in 2008. She now is a young professional in
the fashion industry in New York. She wrote of the pilgrimage and of
the Cardinal, “Thinking about you and the rest of the 2008 Lourdes pilgrims on
the day of Cardinal George’s funeral.What an incredible leader of faith. I vividly
remember one of his homilies from our pilgrimage—‘religion is not a matter of
personal faith, but rather a matter of relationships…right relationships that lead
you to God.’ His homily, your guidance, the malades, and the rest of the Lourdes
pilgrims—and many more experiences throughout our pilgrimage still stand out
as one of the guiding forces in my life. I cannot thank you enough for the incredible
opportunity and experience.”
Just as the branches cannot survive without the vine, we cannot
survive without Jesus. He nourishes us and sustains us, and keeps us
connected one to the other, exactly the way the vine does for the branches.
The young people preparing for the Sacraments – and yes I write
Sacraments because some of our young people who are of catechetical
age will enter the Church through Baptism and/or Confirmation prior
to reception of the Eucharist this weekend – need our Lord. It is up to
us, their parents, teachers, and religious leaders, to strive to make their
connection to the Lord happen. The best way we do this is by taking
them to Mass each week, and by making prayer part of our daily lives in
the home.
Right relationships lead us to God. Relating first and foremost to
the Son, and then one to another as a community of believers, will indeed
lead us to God. Isn’t that what we all want – to be lead to God?
The nourishment Christ can give us through the Sacraments,
especially the Sacrament of the Eucharist, provides the fortitude we need
to combat the difficulties this life can throw at us. As a student, I made
frequent reception of the Eucharist a part of my life, from the time I was
about nine years old until my ordination to the priesthood. Obviously,
the Eucharist compels me and supports me as a priest. It is the center
of my life.
In the first verse of Lawton’s beautiful song, we hear a command
and a great promise. “Remain in me as I remain in you.You may ask what
you will, ask what you will and you shall receive.” As we welcome the
young people of Saint John Berchmans parish to the Sacrament of the
Eucharist (and some to the other Initiation Sacraments of Baptism and
Confirmation), let’s commit to welcoming them always and encouraging
them to participate fully in the life of the Church, and to always stay
connected to the vine. Let’s do it with our words and by our example.
Jesus says in the Gospel, and we sing in our song today, that if we
live in him, we will have eternal life. So the connection to the Lord in
the Sacraments doesn’t only help us for this age but in the age to come.
Too often, I hear from the young people when I ask them about their
church attendance, “My parents are too busy…” I plead with you today,
especially you parents of those receiving the Sacraments; do not be too
busy to bring your children to Church. We added a Mass several years ago
to respond to the needs of those who work in the mornings. We now have
Mass on Saturday and Sunday evenings. No one should be too busy to stay
connected to the vine. No one should be too busy to live in Jesus. No one
should be too busy to strive for eternal life with Jesus.

this weekend and the Confirmation candidates who will receive the
outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Wednesday. May they always know they
have a home at Saint John Berchmans!

We don’t think of going to Mass on Sunday as
a matter of life or death, but it is. We depend
entirely on the Eucharist to be alive and to
stay alive. Jesus himself says, “Whoever eats this bread will live for
ever.” (John 6:51) And later he says that those who do not eat his
flesh or drink his blood “have no life” in them. We can often fool
ourselves about what sustains us.We might think, for example, that
it is our work, or our relationships, or even our entertainments.
These things may keep us alive but only partially. The ultimate,
complete, and true source of our life is Jesus, our bread of life.
Only when we are sustained by him can we make sense of our life
overall. And then we not only live, but we live wisely.
CONFIRMATION AT SAINT JOHN BERCHMANS
Confirmation will be celebrated at 7pm on Wednesday, May 6th. Please
keep these students in your prayers during these final weeks of preparation
and consider joining us at the Mass to share their Sacramental joy!
MASS INTENTIONS
All St. John Berchmans parishioners and friends are invited to request
Mass intentions for those who have died, for loved ones on their birthdays
or anniversaries, or for any other occasion or concern. As the Holy
Sacrifice of the Mass is the most powerful prayer of the Church,
this is a very effective way to honor the living or pray for the dead.
Summer on the Square
The suggested donation for these Masses is $10 per Mass. We will be
limiting the number of intentions to two per Mass, so in order to ensure
availability of your requested day and time, please submit this request
to the rectory office as soon as possible. Intentions will be added to the
calendar on a first-come basis. Mass intentions are now be accepted for
all Masses through December 2016.

The fun continues throughout the evening with foods from
around the world, various musical performances on the
Church steps, and games and activities for the kids!
CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD
Although we will have no Children’s Liturgy of the Word during May, the
program will continue throughout the summer. Children’s Liturgy of the
Word is offered during the 9:45 Mass on the first Sunday of every month.
The Liturgy of the Word will be adapted to the lives and experiences of young
children and gives them the opportunity to understand the Gospel message
and participate in the Eucharistic celebration at their own level. It is open to
children ages 3 to 2nd grade, or until the reception of First Holy Communion.
The children should be present at the beginning of the Mass until the end of
the Introductory Rites, when the priest invites them to leave for their own
celebration in the Church Hall. A member of the liturgy team will bring the
students back to their parents after the Universal Prayer.
Raffle tickets will be sold after all Masses from now until the
event - or until all 500 tickets are sold! If you can help with
the raffle sale or in anyway at Summer on the Square, sign-up
sheets are available at the raffle sales table or you can contact
Jennifer in the parish office. It will take the entire community
to make this event a success. Please consider volunteering
your time or purchasing a raffle ticket.

Mother’s Day Collection

After spending years in a Nepali refugee camp, the Jha family arrived
here with nothing. Catholic Charities met them at the airport and took
them in hand, helping them learn English, find work, enroll in school,
and get medical care. They were among the 469 refugees we resettled
last year.
Thousands of our Nepalese brothers and sisters are suffering death,
displacement and extreme loss due to the massive earthquake that
has affected Nepal and neighboring countries. Please pray for their
comfort and peace in the midst of this natural disaster. Please consider

Yo seré la vid,
Queridos Amigos,
decir: “¿Por qué tengo que ir a la iglesia? Puedo orar en casa, o en la playa o en
el bosque...” El viticultor plantó la vid y las ramas han crecido de la vid y viven
solamente bien si están conectados a la vid y uno con otro. Lo mismo ocurre
con la religión. Nos relacionamos unos con los otros, alimentados por el que
nos sustenta mejor.
“Yo seré la vid, y ustedes los sarmientos. El que
permanece en mí tendrá vida eterna.” Liam Lawton, un
sacerdote católico de la Diócesis de Kildare en Irlanda,
inspirado por las palabras del Evangelio de hoy, escribió
una canción hermosa. He estado cantando la canción toda
la semana, y la cantamos en la Misa de hoy. Las letras
contienen un recordatorio y una invitación – ambos
perfectos para este fin de semana de la Primera Comunión.
La semana pasada, cuando estaba entrando al funeral del Cardenal George,
recibí un correo electrónico de una joven que fue a la peregrinación de Lourdes
con el Cardenal en 2008. Ella ahora es una joven profesional en la industria de la
moda en Nueva York. Ella escribió de la peregrinación y del Cardenal, “Pensando
en usted y el resto de los peregrinos de Lourdes del 2008 en el día del funeral del Cardenal
George. Qué increíble líder de la fe. Recuerdo vivamente una de sus homilías de nuestro
peregrinaje- ‘la religión no es una cuestión de fe personal, sino más bien una cuestión de
relaciones... relaciones justas que le guían a Dios’. Su homilía, la orientación de usted,
los malades, y el resto de los peregrinos de Lourdes y muchas más experiencias a través de
nuestra peregrinación todavía se destacan como una de las fuerzas que guían mi vida. No
puedo agradecerle lo suficiente por la increíble oportunidad y experiencia”.
Así como las ramas no pueden sobrevivir sin la vid, no podemos sobrevivir
sin Jesús. Él nos alimenta, nos sostiene y nos mantiene conectados el uno con
el otro exactamente de la misma manera que la vid lo hace con las ramas. Los
jóvenes que se preparan para los Sacramentos - y sí, escribo Sacramentos porque
algunos de nuestros jóvenes que están en edad catequética entrarán a la Iglesia
a través de Bautismo, Primera Comunión y/o Confirmación este fin de semana
– necesitan de nuestro Señor. Nos corresponde a nosotros, sus padres, maestros
y líderes religiosos, esforzarnos para lograr que se conecten al Señor. La mejor
manera de hacer esto es hacerlos que asistan a Misa cada semana, y haciendo que
la oración sea parte de nuestra vida cotidiana en el hogar.
Las relaciones justas nos guían a Dios. Relacionándose sobre todo con el
Hijo, y luego uno con otro como una comunidad de creyentes, nos llevará de
hecho a Dios. ¿No es eso lo que todos deseamos – ser guiados a Dios?
El alimento que Cristo puede darnos a través de los Sacramentos,
especialmente el Sacramento de la Eucaristía, proporciona la fortaleza que
necesitamos para combatir las dificultades que la vida nos pueda presentar.
Como estudiante, hice que el hecho de recibir la Eucaristía fuera una parte
de mi vida, desde el momento en que tenía cerca de los nueve años hasta mi
ordenación sacerdotal. Para mí, como sacerdote, obviamente la Eucaristía es una
obligación y un apoyo. Es el centro de mi vida.
En el primer verso de la hermosa canción de Lawton, escuchamos una
orden y una gran promesa. “Permanece en mí, como yo permanezco en ti.
Tú puedes pedir lo que quieras, lo que quieras pedir y te lo daré”. Al dar la
bienvenida a los jóvenes de la Parroquia de San Juan Berchmans al Sacramento
de la Eucaristía (y algunos de los demás Sacramentos de Iniciación del Bautismo
y de la Confirmación), comprometámonos a darles la bienvenida siempre y
animarlos a participar plenamente en la vida de la Iglesia, y para estar siempre
conectados a la vid. Hagámoslo con nuestras palabras y con nuestro ejemplo.
Jesús dice en el Evangelio, y cantamos en nuestra canción de hoy, que si
vivimos en Él, tendremos vida eterna. Así que la conexión con el Señor en los
sacramentos no sólo nos ayuda en el presente, sino que también en el futuro.
Muy a menudo, lo que escucho de los jóvenes cuando les pregunto acerca de
su asistencia a la iglesia, “Mis padres están demasiado ocupados ...” Les pido que
hoy en día, especialmente a ustedes, los padres de los que están recibiendo los
Sacramentos; a no estar demasiado ocupados para llevar a sus hijos a la Iglesia.
Agregamos una Misa hace varios años para responder a las necesidades de los
que trabajan por las mañanas. Ahora tenemos Misa los sábados y domingos por
la noche. Nadie debe estar demasiado ocupado para mantenerse conectado a la
vid. Nadie debe estar demasiado ocupado para vivir en Jesús. Nadie debe estar
demasiado ocupado para esforzarse por la vida eterna con Jesús.

este fin de semana y los candidatos de Confirmación que recibirán al Espíritu
Santo el miércoles. ¡Que ellos siempre sepan que tienen un hogar en San Juan

Nosotros no pensamos en ir a la misa del domingo
como un asunto de vida o muerte, pero lo es.
Dependemos enteramente de la Eucaristía para
estar vivos y permanecer vivos. Jesús mismo dice:
“Quien coma de este pan vivirá siempre” (Juan 6:51). Y después dice que
aquellos que no coman de su carne o beban de su sangre “no tendrán vida”
en ellos. Con frecuencia podemos engañarnos a nosotros mismos acerca
de lo que nos alimenta. Podemos pensar, por ejemplo, que es nuestro
trabajo o nuestras relaciones o, incluso, nuestros pasatiempos. Estas cosas
pueden mantenernos vivos pero solo parcialmente. La fuente fundamental,
completa y verdadera es Jesús, nuestro pan de vida. Solo cuando somos
alimentados por él podemos concebir el sentido total de nuestra vida. Y,
entonces, no solo vivimos sino que vivimos con sabiduría.

La confirmación se celebrará el miércoles 6 de mayo a las 7pm. ¡Por

en la oficina parroquial. Se llevará a toda la comunidad para
lograr que este evento sea un éxito. Por favor, considere
donar su tiempo o la compra de un boleto para la rifa.
Continuaremos con la Liturgia de la Palabra para Niños durante el
mes de mayo y todo el verano. La Liturgia de la Palabra para Niños se
ofrece durante la Misa de 9:45am en el primer domingo de cada mes.
La Liturgia de la Palabra será adaptada a las vidas y experiencias de
los niños pequeños y les da la oportunidad de entender el mensaje del
Evangelio y a participar en la celebración eucarística en su propio nivel.
Está abierto a niños de 3 años, hasta el segundo grado, o para recibir la
Primera Comunión. Los niños deben estar presentes al comienzo de la
Misa hasta el final de los ritos iniciales, cuando el sacerdote les invita
a que se retiren para su propia celebración en el salón parroquial. Un
miembro del equipo de liturgia traerá a los estudiantes para reunirse con
sus padres después de la Oración Universal.

Después de pasar años en un campo de refugiados en Nepal, la familia Jha
llegó aquí sin nada. Caridades Católicas los recibió en el aeropuerto y los
llevó de la mano, ayudándoles a aprender inglés, a encontrar trabajo, a
inscribirse en la escuela y recibir atención médica. Ellos son parte de los
469 refugiados que fueron ayudados a reiniciar su vida aquí el año pasado.
Miles de nuestros hermanos y hermanas de Nepal están sufriendo
la muerte, la dislocación y la extrema pérdida debido al terremoto
masivo que ha afectado a Nepal y a los países vecinos. Por favor,

Over the past several years, we have done many great things to
our parish and school buildings. We have restored and renewed
and we have rejoiced in the work that we accomplished together
as a community.
But the work is not yet completed and the bills have not yet
been paid. This year’s Annual Catholic Appeal with the Debt
Reduction Program will give us a chance to eliminate our debt so
that we can continue the great work of building our community.
If you have not yet pledged to the Annual Catholic Appeal, now
is the time. Pledge payments will be accepted and matched all
the way through January 31, 2016. Are you in?
