February - Beach Cities Quilters Guild
MEETING DATE — Thursday, February 12, 2015 MEETING START - 6:30 PM FEBRUARY BEACH CITIES QUILTERS GUILD FEBRUARY SPEAKER NANCY LEE CHONG Our featured speaker for February is Nancy Lee Chong. Nancy is the co-owner of Pacific Rim Quilt Company in Gold Beach, Oregon. She is an accomplished quilter of Hawaiian Applique. Her lecture for Thursday evening will be “How to Find Time to Make a Quilt”, something near and dear to all of our hearts . About her work, Nancy says “My specialty is stress-free needleturn hand appliqué. I put students directly in touch with their needle, thread, and fabric. I show how incredibly easy appliqué is without the use of freezer paper, toothpicks, starch, cardboard, plastic, ironing, or interfacing— all things that needlessly complicate what is otherwise a very simple process”. Please join us at 4:30 p.m. for dinner with Nancy on Thursday evening before guild Peppino’s at Lake Mission Viejo 27782 Vista Del Lago Mission Viejo, CA 92692 Restaurant #: 949-859-9556 RSVP Martha Hurlburt [email protected] 949-709-2690 This year has gotten off to a very good start with our January speaker and workshop. We were fortunate that Mickey Dupre was able to attend our meeting in January as she came from the Midwest and her flight was quite delayed due to the winter weather. She arrived just in time for our meeting. Mickey brought with her quite a number of wonderful quilts for us to admire. Her workshop was enjoyable and well attended. Let's continue with the good luck for this new year. Let the new year mean new friends, new learning, and new experiences. Do something that you are not really comfortable with that will push you to grow and learn. For example, I am taking a hand applique class and I really don't like to do hand work, but I am going to push myself to do something different; something out of my comfort zone. Learning from a new instructor might make the difference for you. You may actually enjoy a technique that you previously avoided. You will never know until you try. Here's to a happy and productive new year! PAST PRESIDENT PRESIDENT’S QUILT ASSISTANCE NEEDED: I got the background fabric for Gail’s quilt and could use some help cutting to size. Thanks to Marianne Cunningham stepping forward to cut the blocks for the members! Other help I will need will be the design committee. The blocks will need to be in by July 4 so we would want to gather our imaginations after that. I will also need a couple of people for back art. We will need quilt bee homes. I will need a lot of physical help as my arthritis and shoulder have decided to go into overdrive and they’re limiting my hours of being able to work. Seems like 45 minutes followed by ice packs is workable for now. Please email me at [email protected] to let me know what you want to help me with. I introduced the theme at the January boarding meeting and will introduce to the general in February. HUGE THANKS! In advance for whatever you can do to help. Candy Crain, Past President WORKSHOPS The February workshop with Nancy Lee Chong is full, but we are adding names to the waiting list. Spaces always open up at the last minute. March Workshop is a Mystery Quilt with Charlotte Angotti. The workshop with Charlotte will be “Let Me Surprise You”. The workshop is based on a pre-cut kit, which is $95.00. Join in the fun and complete a quilt top in one, laughter filled day with Charlotte and your friends. UPCOMING SPEAKERS We are very excited about our upcoming slate of guest quilters that will be speaking and teaching at our guild. You will enjoy taking workshops with these very talented artists. There may be changes due to unforeseen circumstances. February – 2015 Nancy Lee Chong www.prqc.com **Please note change! Phone: (949) 855-8112 PHILANTHROPY Since the November meeting, we’ve donated 104 quilts, 42 NICU blankets, 78 pillowcases and new baby clothes! There was a request for kids’ quilts during the holidays and that response was quick and overwhelming. Philanthropy also is supported through portions of the membership dues, contributions to the quilt show, raffle baskets and more. Thank you all. Our quilts got donated to the following groups: 42 NICU blankets to Saddleback Hospital. UCI Oncology received 5 quilts, Prototypes 35 pillowcases, 4 individuals in need, United Cerebral Palsy got 3, Boys and Girls Town in Trabuco Canyon received 10 quilts and baby clothes for the infant and toddler home, Royal Therapeutic Treatment Center got 2, Children’s Hospital of Orange County 7 pillowcases, Orange County Child Abuse Prevention 12, The Phoenix House 35 quilts and 35 pillowcases, Holiday families 28, including 7 to Marine Holiday families, 3 to special needs first graders, and 2 auction quilts to Make-A-Wish Foundation. A new project we worked on was for a request for 8 twin size quilts to be used as bedspreads for Ashland, a local woman’s shelter. As usual, response was fantastic. Julie Greenspan used the fat quarters we’ve been collecting from donations to cut all 8 kits. She also made the backs and bindings. We started at the January sewing day. Within an hour, all tops were in progress. By the meeting later that week, 4 of the tops were turned in. What an amazing group! The next Philanthropy sewing day will be held Monday, February 2nd at the Laguna Niguel Library on Crown Valley just south of Alicia. It runs from 10:30 until 4 so come for the whole time or parts of it. Bring your sewing machine and supplies and be ready for some great fellowship, too. It’s a great way to make friends and learn, while working on such a worthwhile cause. She has made a pillow with a heart pattern in red work designed by Bird Brain Designs by Robin Kingsley. Deborra has been quilting since 1984 and enjoys doing appliqué, quilting, red work, knitting and baking. January Monthly Mini SECRET SISTERS: Great job, one and all, who participated in the January Organizational Item Secret Sister theme! It was a great turn out; we even had a guest participate after reading the newsletter! We had some questions and concerns about Fat Quarters February as to how many, can you use some from my stash, etc.? Try to keep the amount at $10. A guild member mentioned that Moores has a lovely selection of FQ for $2 each. The joy is in the giving...and receiving isn't bad either!! Sara and Dana HOSPITALITY Thanks to all who brought baked goods, candy, meats & cheeses, fruit and low calorie snacks to the January Guild meeting. They were enjoyed by many! Our February meeting is close to Valentines Day so lets stay with that theme and have our own "Hearts and Love" feast at the guild! Please bring your finger food to share with our beloved friends and quilters and lets have fun being Valentines.
