Peggy Martin began quilting in 1981,
piecing and quilting everything by
hand. A few years later, when quicker
methods were being discovered, she
became hooked on finding faster, easier ways to make quilts. When she began teaching in 1985, she continued to
develop more streamlined, fast, fun
methods of working. She enjoys expanding on traditional quilts with new
variations and color-play. Her favorite quilts are those which are fast,
easy to piece, and offer many design possibilities.
Peggy has been presenting programs and workshops at guilds and
seminars since 1988. She was selected as Professional Quilter's
Teacher of the Year in 2010. She is an award-winning quilter and has
exhibited in many national shows. She lives in San Diego, California
and is married with two grown sons. To view Peggy’s work, check
out her website at: www.peggymartinquilts.com.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Linda Ambrosini, [email protected], 949 362-4206
On September 1st we lost a dear member of the Southern California quilting community, Leah Pariser. Leah, along with her husband Jack, brought
us wonderful fabric choices through their chain of stores, Leah’s Fabric
Gallery. At one point there were 13 stores in Southern California. When
they simplified their business they kept two locations, one in Orange and
the other in Mission Viejo (lucky us). Not only did they run a fabric business, Jack and Leah were extremely supportive of the local guilds by volunteering their premises for guild activities like workshops, board meeting
and friendship groups. I personally had the privilege of working for Jack
and Leah at their Mission Viejo location. They embraced all of their employees into the “Leah’s family” and I enjoyed many social events with the girls from both the Orange and Mission Viejo stores. Leah was extremely supportive and encouraging to her employees
with the idea of improving of your personal quilting skills and developing your individual style. She
was always promoting new artists by offering their patterns for sale and hosting classes. I bet each
of you has a memory from the store: a class you took, a sew-in day with friends, a finished quilt
made from their fabric, or just maybe, a yard or two of fabric still in your stash. Thank you, Leah.
We will miss you!! Jack is still in Laguna Beach and I am sure he would enjoy hearing from you.

Betty Collins [email protected] 760 805-9908 Cell
It is almost here and not too late to get involved.
Extra hands are needed in every aspect of this special
event. Contact Betty Collins at the number above if you
want to help make this event a smash hit. It is our big
fund raiser to support two years of programs and other
activities. Hospitality needs people to help plate the
brunch. Ticket sales can always use another member to
walk around selling raffle tickets. Perhaps you could help
hang the live auction quilts. And there are so many more
jobs to be done. Volunteer for the day and meet more of
your fellow members.

MONTHLY MINI
Margaret Arnold [email protected] 949-770-1259
October's Monthly Mini is a Halloween table runner made by Becky
Reed from two blocks from the Crabapple Hill embroidery pattern
"Hocuspocusville." The scenes show two Victorian mansions
converted into spooky Halloween boutiques that are sure to make
you smile: they promise such things as "bad hair days guaranteed"
and "wart enhancement!" It is beautifully hand-embroidered, machine-pieced and hand-quilted. The pattern suggested using just one
color of embroidery floss. But Becky decided to add color with heat
set crayon and 5 fall colors of embroidery floss. The extra color
greatly enhances the design. The lucky winner will enjoy this runner
for years to come! Buy your tickets and cross your fingers!
Tickets are
$1 for one
$5 for six.

This past month has been mixed with heavy
losses plus a little miracle. Our beloved Past
President Jan Hirth and her husband Ted lost
their daughter, Christy, on September 13. We are
so saddened to hear this news and send our love
and warm embraces to Jan and Ted. Monica
Shafer's older sister passed away earlier in the
month. Monica is grateful that she and her two
other siblings made it to the Chicago area in time
Sharon Whelan
to say goodbye to their sister before her passing.
Leah Pariser, who with her husband Jack owned
and operated Leah's Fabric Gallery for 30+ years in Mission Viejo and
Orange, passed away on Sept 1st. On Sep 30th Sumi Maruyama’s
husband, Ken, succumbed to injuries received in a fall at home.
Condolence cards were sent from the guild to all the families. Please
keep them in your prayers.
In happier news, Membership Chair Katy Lillie and her husband, Mark
became first time grandparents to Amanda Katherine earlier this
month. After heart surgery at CHOC for health issues diagnosed before her birth, Amanda is now home with her parents Chris and Kaylie. We look forward to meeting the little sweetie soon! Also on the
new arrival list is a granddaughter for first time grandparents Mary and
Barry Gorelick.
Do you know a member that needs a little sunshine due to an illness,
surgery or loss of a family member? Or a member celebrating a major
birthday, anniversary or new grandchild? If so, please contact me by
email or phone call to let me know so I can send a card on behalf of
our members.

SAN CLEMENTE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
119 AVENIDA DE LA ESTRELLA IN SAN CLEMENTE
The Philanthropy Ladies have been busy in the basement room at the Presbyterian Church,
enjoying the comforts of air conditioning…as I write this tonight, the hottest day on record in
my memory, we can still manage to create some quilted gems. While Sheri is touring Europe,
I am struggling to keep the Philanthropy boat afloat… There have been fabric donations from
so many generous people, thank you everyone! There are batiks, large pieces of fabric for
backs, brights, stripes, I can’t wait to organize them all. We have been making lap sized
quilts of late, destined for Meals on Wheels in San Juan Capistrano. The plan is to wait until
October to deliver them, no need for a quilt to stay warm these days. Please feel free to join
us the third Wednesday of each month at the Presbyterian, 10-2pm, come for an hour or bring
lunch and stay until 2. If you have any questions, give me a call, 949-842-6089. Vickie ;0)

SUPER SWAPPERS........Christmas or light neutrals for October.
We are so glad to have our members join the swaps. Remember, you can join in any time, even if you have
not swapped in past months. The more swappers, the more variety we get in the fabrics. Be sure to pick up
your packet each month at the Super Swappers table, or have a friend get it for you. This is how it works:
*Wash, iron and cut off selvages from 1 yard of good quality 100% cotton before cutting twelve 10-inch blocks.
*Put the twelve 10-inch blocks in a gallon plastic bag with your name written in large letters at the top.
Also indicate that you have included 12 blocks.
WE MUST RECEIVE 12 BLOCKS IN EACH PLASTIC BAG FOR THE SWAP TO WORK. YOU WILL NOT
RECEIVE ANY OF YOUR FABRIC BACK, SO IF YOU LIKE YOUR FABRIC BE SURE TO BUY A LITTLE
EXTRA FOR YOUSELF.

Joan Orris made this table runner titled “American Maize”
from a pattern by Cheryl Almgren Taylor that appeared in the
Sep/Oct 2014 issue of McCall’s Quilting Magazine. Joan
enjoys changing her home decorations with each season by
using quilted table toppers and wall hangings. Creating
quilted items also fulfills her love for sewing and visual arts.

Janice Elliott and her niece, Emerson, showed “Butterflies”.
They saw this quilt at Pottery Barn and Janice jumped at the
chance when Emerson asked if Janice would make it for her.
Emerson’s parents recently painted her bedroom purple, her
favorite color, so she needed new bedding to match, and
asked specifically for the color purple and lots of butterflies.
After sewing the stripes together Janice began making her
own templates for the butterflies and flowers to appliqué.
Nancy Burch completed the quilting which really topped it off.
Coat and Jacket Drive
We will be collecting cold weather outerwear at the Oct. 14 th
meeting. These items will be delivered and distributed through the O.C. Rescue Mission. Items are
needed for man, women and children. There is a special extra need for men's hats and scarves. It
will someday turn cold here and these items will be so greatly appreciated. It would be great if you
could check with your neighbors, relatives, and friends. There will be a white pick up truck at the top
of the parking lot for easy collect. Many thanks. Julie Vlahos [email protected]

items. Please bring your creations in October and share them in
our next Show and Tell. Thank you, Viv and Joan.

Students showed their projects from the August Mystery Workshop. Left to right: Teacher Linda Rigdon,
Maggie Bell, Margaret Arnold, Vickie Janis, Lynn Tweet. And hiding behind her quilt in the back is teacher
Wendy McCallley. Vickie’s table runner is “Halloween Fun”. She used Halloween fabric and machine quilted it
with spider webs and itsy bitsy spiders dancing around the edges - the runner will go to her friend Lorraine..
Mary Mulcahey with her quilt from one of Rob Appell’s
“Endangered Species” patterns. She took his class at
Camp Watch-A-Patcher four years ago and had a ball
making this quilt. Instead of the Fairy Frost fabric line,
that Rob used in his original quilt, she used batiks.
12
Mary Mulcahey took a class with Rob Appell to
make “Green Sea Turtle” She used batiks and
changed the color scheme. She had fun in the class.
Michelle Howe showed “Winter Dreams” based on the
“Frolic” pattern. Hand appliquéd, machine quilted, embroidered, and embellished. Made by the A-team
friendship group for the Flying Geese Quilt Guild
auction to be held Oct 11th.
Chris Huben made this top in a workshop with Pat
Speth. She showed it to compare with Sheryl’s quilt
done in a different color selection.
Sheryl Smith Bailey displayed her completed quilt
from the Pat Speth class. Sheryl cut enough 5”
squares to make three quilts! A different fabric selection makes the design very different. Machine quilted.
13
Carol Divino started “Beach Scene” about five years ago
in a Marian Mapes class. Using her own stash and
Marian’s full size drawing, she fused each section, starting at the bottom, working her way to the top, then placing
the palm tree last. She free-motion quilted the entire quilt
on her Viking SE sewing machine and her Tiara Mid-arm
machine, using David Taylor’s FMQ techniques. She will
hang the quilt in her granddaughter Hailey’s beachthemed bedroom after Marian Mapes sees it. Hailey is so
excited about this! Carol had fun making it.
[You can see part of the palm tree pattern at lower right.]
“Beach Blanket Bingo” Made, quilted
and donated to the November Fest
auction by Vickie Janis using
techniques from a workshop with Pat
Speth. 50”W x 74”L
Annice Douglas started this quilt “Flower Tessellation” three years
ago in a Suzanne Stanton class. Quilted by Nancy Burch.
Congratulations, Annice, on finishing this beautiful UFO.

The Surfside Quilters Guild, a 501 (c)(3) corporation, was established in March 2009 to
promote quilting and other fiber arts in the
South Orange County area. The Guild offers the opportunity to share experiences
with other quilters in an atmosphere of fellowship, as well as to enhance the knowledge and skills of its membership. Newsletters are distributed via the Internet.
Dues are $30.00 annually for the membership year from May 1st through April 30th.
Guests are always welcome for a donation
of $5.00. Membership and Volunteer forms
are available on our website:
