Dear Supporters,
On behalf of the CJD Foundation and the patients and
families we represent I extend our very warm welcome and
sincerest gratitude to all of you for joining us today. This
event is the culmination of many months of planning on the
part of many people.
We are especially grateful to Jim Papoulis and Mike Greenly
for generously offering their time and talent not only to
entertain us but to also raise awareness and much needed
funding to help those affected by CJD and other prion
diseases. We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to the
incredibly talented Young Peoples Chorus of New York
City - when you hear these magnificent voices you will
understand why we named this concert “The Voices of
Hope”.
The entire fundraising committee worked very hard and
with great dedication, but we extend our gratitude and
special thanks to Debbie Yobs and Mike Vitanza, co-chairs
of this event. It may have been a labor of love, but the labor
part involved many long hours of hard work and they have
done an excellent job! We also offer special thanks to Ana
Betro for designing the beautiful Voices of Hope logo and
promotion pieces, to Melany Pritchard for so diligently and
efficiently compiling the program, to Lori Nusbaum for
creating and editing the auction site and to Stu Yaffa for
donating the printing.
Thank you again for joining us for this very special event.
Most sincerely,
Florence Kranitz
President, the CJD Foundation
Dear Friends,
We’re so pleased to welcome you to Voices of Hope, a celebration
of remembrance and hopefulness for the families and friends
associated with the CJD Foundation. This evening is the culmination
of the efforts of many, many supporters and friends. We send our
sincere appreciation to all who contributed! Special thanks go to:
The Fundraising Committee, who have worked tirelessly
throughout the year and contributed in countless ways to
make this evening a success: Ana Betro, Ruthie
George, Paul Paternoster, Scott Paternoster, and
Stu Yaffa. Each contributed in their own unique and
outstanding way.
Florence Kranitz, President of the CJD Foundation, for her
leadership, passion, support, and hard work on this event.
And to the dedicated team at the CJD Foundation, Lori
Nusbaum, Melany Pritchard, and Wanda Culp-Lias,
for lending their diverse talents, hard work, and high energy
level to support the concert, auction site, ticket sales, and
logistics.
The very talented Young People’s Chorus of New York
City, for adding their beautiful “Voices of Hope” to our
event; to Jim Papoulis and Mike Greenly for “I Know,”
the inspirational song they composed; and to Nancy
Bloom, Lindsay Bogaty, and Sophia Miller at the YPC
for all their help in preparing for the performance.
Our donors and sponsors, who so generously supported our
efforts here tonight.
And to all of our guests tonight! Your presence and
enthusiastic support keep our Voices of Hope loud and
strong.
With tremendous gratitude,
Debbie Yobs and Mike Vitanza
Co-Chairs, Fundraising Committee
ABOUT THE COMPOSERS
Jim Papoulis
Jim Papoulis composes, orchestrates and conducts music for choirs,
orchestras, and ensembles throughout the world. His compositions
are known for exploring new modes of musical communication by
honoring and connecting classical and traditional forms with nonWestern sounds. Jim's distinct and ever-evolving approach unites
classical with contemporary sounds, world rhythms, R&B, and
voices, while combining live instruments with current composing and
recording technology. He is a firm believer in the ability of music to
educate, heal, and inspire all of us. www.jimpapoulis.com
Mike Greenly
Mike Greenly is a former corporate executive (VP, Marketing &
Communications, Avon Products Inc.) and journalist. Today he’s a
freelance speechwriter, script writer and presentation coach. His
passion, however, is being a lyricist. Mike has written three Billboard-charted Dance Hits, and has collaborated with Jim Papoulis on
these as well as choral songs. He uses his lyrics to support positive
change in the world. For example, the duo’s award-winning song,
“We Can Plant a Forest,” benefits Trees for the Future, which
works to re-forest the earth. Mike and Jim are delighted that “I
Know” benefits the CJD Foundation and the important work it does.

ABOUT THE CHOIR
The Young People’s Chorus of New York City, founded in
1988 by Artistic Director Francisco J. Núñez, a MacArthur “genius”
fellow, is a groundbreaking program that harnesses the power of
music to fulfill the potential of every child of any cultural or
economic background, while heightening an awareness of the
potential of young people to rise to unforeseen levels of artistry.
Almost 1,400 children from 7 to 18 benefit musically, academically,
and socially through YPC’s after-school and in-school programs.
YPC has been recognized with a National Medal of Arts and
Humanities Youth Program Award, America’s highest honor for
youth programs.
"I Know” was written and composed by Mike Greenly and Jim Papoulis
in memory of Stephanie Martine Papoulis, who died tragically in 2007 at
the age of 45 from CJD. The song is performed by the Young People's
Chorus of NYC -- an extraordinary group of multicultural young singers
whose lives are positively transformed by being a part of it ... even as
they earn awards for artistry around the world.
Mike and Jim have donated much of the proceeds from this very moving
piece to the CJD Foundation, we have adopted it as our theme song.
I KNOW©
I can’t foretell if darker skies will come and change my life
I can’t foresee the road ahead or what’s around the bend
I only know the things I know
I only know today
I know that I can hope
I know that I can love
I know that I can grow
This I know
We never want the darker times that could come our way
We do our best to carry on and make it to the end
So let us always keep the faith
The light will shine again
I know that I can hope
I know that I can love
I know that I can grow
This I know
I’ll remember what
I know

In Loving Memory of Robert (Bob) Vitanza
Thank you Bob for everything you gave to society and to your
family. You were a great man, a model son, an inspirational
brother, a loving husband and a successful businessman.
It has been six years since you left us and there are still
friends and acquaintances of yours who reach out regularly
to express their appreciation for what you brought to the
world. You obviously made a huge impact on others.
Your spirit lives on and in us every single day. Thanks again
for everything!
We love you and miss you.

Jerry Yaffa was a pillar of strength in the community. He was a loving husband, an unbelievable father, and an even be er grandfather (Zaddie) with 3 children and 16 grandchildren. He experienced near fatal accidents and illness losing a leg (1992), an eye (1996), and a major heart-a ack (2001). These incidents didn’t change his outlook on life. He lived each day to its fullest and never complained. He was the proud owner of the family business; S.Yaffa’s Sons Recycling. He turned a mountain of scrap metal into money and used his knowledge and experience to build a successful business. From cranes, to heavy machinery, he could do it all. He was generous to all chari es and would help anyone who needed a hand. Jerry was diagnosed with CJD in late April, 2005 and was buried on his birthday June 22, 2005. Always in our hearts! You will never be forgo en! We are the
voices of hope
when we honor
our loved ones.

ABOUT PRION DISEASES
Prion diseases are a group of rare, invariably fatal brain
diseases that occur both in humans and animals. They first
came to wide public attention in the mid-1980s when the
epidemic of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), a
prion disease of cattle, arose in the United Kingdom (U.K.).
It is now believed that BSE may have appeared spontaneously in British cattle sometime in the early 1970s. Tissue
from infected animals may have contaminated cattle feed,
leading to the silent spread of the BSE epidemic. There is
also a theory that BSE came from feed contaminated with
scrapie, the long established sheep prion disease. Inevitably,
concern over whether BSE could pass to humans mounted.
In humans, the best known prion disease is CreutzfeldtJakob Disease (CJD), first documented in 1920 by two
German doctors, Hans Gerhard Creutzfeldt (1885-1964)
and Alfons Maria Jakob (1884-1931). CJD reportedly affects
approximately one person per million per population each
year worldwide. In the United States (U.S.), this translates
to approximately 300 new cases annually. It is well known
that CJD is very difficult to diagnose, leading to speculation
that the one case per million statistics may be incorrect.
Most of the cases are sporadic CJD (sCJD), occurring for
no, as of yet, proven reason. The sporadic form accounts
for approximately 85% of the cases. The familial form of
CJD (fCJD) is associated with a genetic mutation that is
passed on from parent to child. fCJD accounts for
approximately 10-15% of the cases. The third type of CJD is
acquired by infection from an outside source.
Because prions are so unusual and prion diseases are unique
in that they can both be inherited and transmitted, the area
has attracted enormous scientific and medical interest. This
provides a ray of hope that all of this attention may one day
lead to a cure.*
