Ninth Annual Ales for Tails will be June 18!
Spring 2014
Ninth Annual Ales for Tails will be June 18!
It’s the perfect recipe for the start of summer. Start with
good friends. Add a variety of craft beers, paired with
delicious foods. Then toss in a fantastic silent auction and
an exciting live
auction. The result
is Ales for Tails,
Kokomo Humane
Society’s signature
fundraising event.
What happens at
Ales for Tails? It’s
an evening of fun
and food, with a
spectacular silent
auction. Chef
Cynthia Yazdani
of PASTArrific
will prepare hors
d’oeuvres specially
chosen to complement
the craft beers and
Indiana wines.
Indulgence Bakery is in
charge of desserts, and
The Kokomo Homebrew
Association will put in
a guest appearance. Look for stations with beer choices at
each one, along with great food.
This is our ninth year for Ales for Tails, which will take
place June 18 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at PASTArrific, 3001
S. Webster Street in Kokomo. The event committee has been
bustling, finding the perfect donations for the silent auction,
and choosing the best items for the live auction, facilitated
by Cartwright Ellis of Crume/Ellis Auctioneers. Our auctions
get better each year, with sports memorabilia, art work,
electronics, specialty baskets and much more.
Tickets for Ales for Tails are $40 per person, and $50 at the
door, if we don’t sell out in advance. You can find tickets
at the Kokomo Humane Society, Jefferson Road Animal
Hospital and on our website, www.kokomohumane.org.

From the Director’s Desk:
We’re Ready for New Digs!
We know what it’s like to have
something wear out. That once-perfect
pair of shoes, the car you saved all your
money to buy, the stove or washing
machine that just isn’t what it used
to be. Here at the Kokomo Humane
Society, we live with that something
every day. We walk in and out of it,
house animals in it, repair it when the
walls crumble and long for something
newer and more functional. It’s our
animal shelter building.
When our building was new in 1952,
I’m sure it was great. It fit the needs
of the community at that time. It was
a place to bring animals that were
running at large, or animals that people
could not otherwise rehome. As time
went on, new additions and renovations
were added here and there. In 2014, it’s a different story.
For the past two or three decades, the animal sheltering community
has been able to take advantage of innovations in air circulation, noise
abatement, sound modification and the creation of a healthier environment
for shelter animals. The removal of waste matter from kennels now allows
for easier sanitation for the dogs, cats and small animals in our care. Shelters
are now able to display animals in appealing, attractive cages and kennels.
Because of the condition of our current shelter and the many positive
changes in animal sheltering, we are ready for New Digs. The Kokomo
Humane Society has purchased land at the corner of Home Avenue and
Hoffer Street. We’ve engaged an architect who has drawn up plans and given
us a peek at what the new shelter will look like. We have an excellent Capital
Campaign Committee, and are raising funds to build the new facility, which
will cost us about $2 million.
We’ve raised a little over a third of the funds we anticipate we will need,
and we have a long way to go. If you would like to be in on the ground floor
of this worthwhile project, if you want to help make Howard County an even
better place for people and animals, please give us a call at 765-452-6224. If
you aren’t able to help financially, we can put you to work in other ways. If
you know someone who loves animals and might like to help, we’ll be happy
to send them a brochure or give them a call. Just let us know.
The Kokomo Humane Society’s New Digs will be great for Kokomo and
Howard County. It will be great for the animals who come through our
doors. Please support our New Digs campaign. You’ll be proud of the results,
and glad to have been a part of it!

• Dogs (and wolves and foxes) are
descended from a small, weasel-like
mammal called Miacis which was a
tree-dwelling creature and existed about
40 million years ago. Dogs, as we know
them today, first appeared in Eurasia
about 13,000 years ago, and were
probably a direct descendant of a small,
grey wolf (not from the type of jackal
or jackal/wolf as previously thought).
The dingo is not native to Australia
but was introduced thousands of years
ago by the first immigrants. Dogs were
first domesticated by cavemen in the
Palaeolithic age and gradually developed
(or were bred) into the breeds known
today.
• The tallest dogs are the Great Dane and
the Irish Wolfhound. The largest Great
Dane stood at 40.6 inches and an Irish
Wolfhound 39.4 inches.
• Dogs have been used as guards, hunters,
draft animals, eyes for the blind,
drug and explosive detectors, rodent
controllers- and even weapons! In Roman
times and the Middle Ages, mastiffs
wearing light armour, carrying spikes and
pots of flaming sulphur and resin ran
into battle against mounted knights. In
World War II the Russians trained dogs to
run suicide missions between the tracks
of German tanks with mines strapped on
their backs.
• Unlike humans and dogs, cats do not
suffer a lot from loneliness. It is a mistake
to project our social feelings onto our
cats. Cats are social to a degree, but they
are far more concerned with territorial
issues than we can even imagine.
• Purring: To purr, cats use extra tissue
in the larynx (voice box). This tissue
vibrates when they purr.
• In ancient Egypt, killing a cat was a crime
punishable by death.
• In ancient Egypt, mummies were made
of cats, and embalmed mice were placed
with them in their tombs. In one ancient
city, over 300,000 cat mummies were
found.

Not Too Early to Think About
Barktober Fest
We know, we know….it was a very rough winter and a very late spring.
And now we’re talking about autumn so soon? Yes, because autumn means
October, and October means Barktober Fest! Mark your calendars for October
11 for Barktober Fest 2014,
from 9 a.m. until noon at the
Highland Park stage. Bring
your dog, your dog’s costume
and your sense of creativity.
And don’t forget your wallet so
you can visit our vendors and
donate to a great cause.
This is our eighth year for
Barktober Fest. It’s a dog walk.
There are games for people and
dogs. And contests. And a cake
walk. And vendors. And so
much
more.
We have
lots
of fun
with our
canine
companions (and even a few incredibly calm cats), and
hope you will join us. Remember that it’s a fundraiser,
and we ask walkers and their dogs to raise funds for the
Kokomo Humane Society. Talk to friends, neighbors,
relatives, co-workers and ask them to donate for the
animals.
You will be getting a flyer from us in late summer
with more information. In the meantime, circle
October 11 and get ready for fun!

Ziggy ... such a prize
“I can’t say how much Ziggy means to me…”
With gratitude and appreciation, this is a picture of my
precious Ziggy-dog, adopted from KHS December 22, 2011.
Ziggy was located by my grandson and his fiancé and the
adoption was finalized by my son, given to me Christmas
morning. I can’t say how much Ziggy means to me, adding
the love he gets from family members.
I’m grateful to each of you for caring for Ziggy until he
became mine. This picture of Ziggy was taken as he cuddled
with his squeaky toy on the back porch swing.
We love each other, I believe. Ziggy is gentle—adapts to my
schedule and is so well mannered. My deep thanks to each of
you who sheltered him. He’s such a prize.

In Memory of Our Ben
We at the Kokomo Humane Society were saddened this spring
to lose our shelter dog, Ben. He celebrated his tenth birthday last
May. Ben lived at the shelter and greeted visitors, letting them
pat him and talk to him. He was a very good listener.
He visited schools with our Humane Education staff, and was
for several years an integral part of teaching kids how
to be safe around dogs. He was brought to us as a stray,
but it was apparent to everyone that he was a very special
dog. He was calm around children, was not bothered by
large groups of people, and was always gentle. He loved
to go for rides, and loved to play outside, especially in
the snow.
He has been missed so much by our staff, and by his
best buddy, Jonah, who comes to work with our shelter
manager. Ben’s loss has left a huge empty space in our
lives and in our hearts. We will always love him.
