Welcome to Vanguard University’s
2008-09 annual report!
This report includes the statistics and numbers used to measure the health and progress
of the University. It includes graphs and charts to illustrate the pertinent trends and shows
Vanguard’s vibrancy through the dollar figures and statistics used to track overall progress.
The annual report is followed by the donor list, some of the most important pages in this
document. Without people who give to VU, the University’s on-going success would not
be possible. That’s why every person, business, church and friend who gave to Vanguard
in the past fiscal year is listed. The donations came from many sources — alumni, parents,
our own faculty and staff, trustees, foundation board directors, churches, corporations,
clubs, foundations and government appropriations. Each contributed generously to support
Vanguard’s operations, program expansion and capital and endowment campaign.
This giving to Vanguard is a great encouragement to students and to every member of
Vanguard’s faculty, staff and administration who devote themselves to making Vanguard
an institution of excellence. The gifts are more important now than ever to help the
University fulfill its commitment to academic vigor, spiritual vitality, character formation,
professional excellence and a family-like campus atmosphere.

Vanguard University Named a Top
Five Best College by U.S. News &
World Report for the 3rd Year in a Row
Vanguard University of Southern California was again named in the
top five of the best baccalaureate colleges in the West by U.S. News
& World Report when that publication’s America’s Best Colleges 2010
rankings were released. Vanguard is ranked fifth in the western region.
“It is an honor to again be ranked by U.S. News & World Report
as a top five college,” said Vanguard University’s president, Carol
Taylor. “This is an acknowledgement of VU’s ongoing commitment
to academic excellence and to providing a quality education to our
students.”

Western College
For the fifth straight year, The Princeton Review named
Vanguard a Best Western College. This distinction is
published on The Princeton Review website at www.
princetonreview.com in the website feature 2010 Best
Colleges: Region by Region. The education services
company selected Vanguard as one of 123 institutions
across 15 states that it recommends in its “Best in the
West” section.
The Princeton Review chooses the U.S. colleges and
universities based upon a student survey it conducts.
The survey, a grid-based questionnaire, asks students
about their school’s academics, campus life and
student body, as well as their study hours, politics, and
opinions. The colleges and universities are also divided
into geographic regions, with VU listed as one of 123
schools receiving the Best in the West designation.

for its test preparation courses, admission and education services, and books. Its designations are unique
among many of the college rankings because they are
based primarily on student feedback.

Dr. Carol Taylor Named President
At its meeting on Friday, March 6, 2009, the board of trustees
took action to name Dr. Carol Taylor as the president of Vanguard
University. Dr. Taylor joined Vanguard in summer of 2007 as
provost. In January, her stellar service led the trustees, without
hesitation, to call her to serve as acting president. In appointing Dr.
Taylor president the board recognizes her conspicuous leadership
under demanding circumstances, her even-tempered and cleareyed managerial judgments, her deep and wide support within the
Vanguard community, her capacity to sustain morale, her versatility
and her equanimity of spirit as a rare cluster of qualities. Dr. Taylor is
the first woman to serve as president in Vanguard University’s nearly
ninety-year history.
Dr. Taylor has a PhD in multilingual/multicultural education
from Florida State University, a Master of Arts in cross-cultural
communication from the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary,
and a Bachelor of Science in elementary education from Evangel
University. Before joining Vanguard, Dr. Taylor served for seven
years as the vice provost for undergraduate education at Biola
University in La Mirada, California. Prior to that, she worked for 12
years in administration and research at Educational Testing Service
in Princeton, NJ. She has teaching and administrative experience

ranging from elementary education to graduate university levels.
Over the years she has served in the public marketplace as an
advocate for second language learners and international students;
taught at the University of Nebraska, Omaha, Florida State
University, and Eastern Michigan University; consulted for state
departments of education and national resource centers; and worked
with national testing committees on large-scale testing. She has
taught and/or lectured nationally and in 11 countries internationally.
Since 2000 she has been delighted to serve in Christian higher
education. She has been a facilitator and mentor in the CCCU
Women’s Leadership Development Institute and serves on the CCCU
Student Academic Programs Commission.

In March, Vanguard University’s board of trustees passed a
resolution for the Vanguard Athletic Department to extend
its tradition of excellence in competitive intercollegiate
athletics with the addition of an aquatics program that
began with men’s and women’s swimming. The swim
program began its inaugural season in the fall 2009, with

scheduled for the fall 2010.

“We are excited to add aquatics as our fourteenth and
fifteenth sports,” says athletic director Bob Wilson, who
has been the AD at Vanguard for the past 14 years. “We

CWS Gender and Justice
Conference
On March 6-7, 2009 Vanguard University’s Center for Women’s Studies
(CWS) presented a conference entitled Gender and Justice. The theme
of this conference was “Integrated” and the focus was on issues such
as the movement to legalize prostitution in California, gender issues
and the pursuit of justice in our society. The goal of the conference was
to equip participants to understand and defend the rights of women
and to pursue justice in our community.
“The modern slave trade is a business fueled by demand.
Consequently, to some degree we are all part of the problem or part
of the solution. We contribute to demand by turning a blind eye to
pornography and sex tourism or by making choices that reward
companies that keep their bottom line under the rest of the market
by the use of slave labor.” says community liaison for CWS, Sandie
Morgan.
Speakers included: Esther Ntoto, Lance Pittluck, Sandie Morgan and
internationally recognized prostitution expert, founder of Prostitution
Research & Education and author of Prostitution and Trafficking in
Nevada: Making the Connections, Dr. Melissa Farley.
In addition to the conference’s seminar sessions, workshops took place
throughout the two day event, providing participants with additional
opportunities to learn about issues pertaining to human trafficking,
prostitution and social injustice.
The Center for Women’s Studies creates an environment for
learning, research and advocacy. Their mission is to prepare young
women and men to understand the impact of gender issues. They
seek to be a voice for those with no voice, breaking through walls
of oppression and fear, attacking ignorance and apathy. For more

Homecoming 2009
SCBS, SCBC, SCC and VU alums joined in the festivities at
Vanguard University’s Homecoming 2009 which took place February
3-7. The ten-year reunion of the class of 1998 and the twenty five
year reunion of the classes of 1983 and 1984 were also celebrated
during this year’s homecoming.
Homecoming events included the Homecoming and Family Weekend
concert featuring Vanguard’s renowned ensembles, Mocha and
Memories in the Cove, the alumni versus faculty and staff softball
game, women’s and men’s basketball games against rival Biola, and
the alumni awards luncheon.
Alumni chapels included speakers Glenn Garvin ’83, MA ’07, Larry
Kraiss ’82, and former Vanguard president Wayne Kraiss. Glenn and
his wife Robin (Triggs ’86), and their three children are missionaries
to abused and neglected children in the United States. He travels
and speaks on behalf of the orphaned and the fatherless. Dr. Larry
Kraiss ’82, the 2009 Alumnus of the Year, is a highly respected
cardiologist and vascular surgeon. The Young Alumnus of the Year

Hittenberger Appointed
VU Provost
Vanguard University’s board of trustees approved
the appointment of Dr. Jeff Hittenberger as the
University’s provost/vice president for academic
affairs.
“It is with a great deal of joy and gladness that
I announce that the board has unanimously
approved the appointment of Dr. Jeff Hittenberger
as Vanguard’s provost/vice president for
academic affairs,” said VU president Carol Taylor
in a statement. “Dr. Hittenberger had very strong
support from the search committee as well as
faculty and staff that participated in the interview
process. I also received a number of emails from faculty and staff who
had worked with Jeff and were excited about the possibility of his
returning to this strategic position of leadership.”
Hittenberger grew up as the son of Assemblies of God missionaries
in Haiti during the reign of dictator Papa Doc Duvalier. He is fluent in
French and Haitian Creole. He earned a PhD from the University of
Southern California in educational planning, policy and administration.
His bachelor of arts degree is from Evangel University. He also earned
an administrative services credential from San Jose State University
and pursued graduate studies at Fuller Theological Seminary and
l’Universite Mohamed V in Rabat, Morocco, on a Rotary Ambassadorial
Scholarship.
Hittenberger most recently served as director of graduate programs
and professor of education at Evangel University. He brings significant
experience in teaching and leadership in Christian and secular
institutions, and has a strong record of organizational leadership that
cultivates cohesive teams and improves education through strategic
planning, accreditation processes and professional development
“Jeff has a deep commitment to diversity and missions, and comes to
us with a sense of calling to join our efforts to build a strong Vanguard,”
says Taylor.
Prior to his position at Evangel, Hittenberger held positions as the
dean of the school of education, assistant provost for planning
and accreditation, director of the graduate programs in education
and professor of education at Vanguard. He has also served as the
administrator of curriculum and instruction for the Monterey County
office of education, has administrative experience in both public
education and universities, and has conducted USAID-funded projects
in Cameroon and Mali.
“I believe in Vanguard University,” Hittenberger says. “From the time
of Huldah Needham’s vision concerning this ‘vine of His planting’ to
the present, this institution has blessed the world in incalculable ways.
As Vanguard approaches the ninetieth anniversary of its founding, the

to engage in God’s loving, redemptive, reconciling mission in multiple
professions across many cultures are extraordinary.”

Led by James L. Melton, chair of the music department, the
University’s music ensembles kicked off the holiday season
with two wonderful evenings of music. The concert included
performances by eleven of VU’s thirteen department of music
ensembles, encompassing over 250 Vanguard University students.
These world-class performance groups are in high demand and
have toured Europe, Mexico, the South Pacific, Japan, China,
South Korea, Canada, Portugal and many U.S. states.

December 4 – 14: Vanguard’s theatre arts
department presents the heartwarming
American classic It’s a Wonderful Life.
For the first time, this signature event was held in the acoustically
unsurpassed Reneé and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall of the
Orange County Performing Arts Center. This dazzling 1,700 seat
auditorium is nationally renowned for its exquisite architecture and
delicate crystal lighting.
“We try to share the Vanguard educational experience of our
students through the songs of the Christmas season and we
also involve the audience in singing Christmas carols in parts of
the program. It was a wonderful way to start off the Christmas
season!” said Melton.

VU students win in National
Geographic Preserve Our
Planet PSA contest
Students from Vanguard University’s communication department
won the Audience Award in the 2009 National Geographic Preserve
Our Planet PSA (public service announcement) contest. Selected
by online voting, the Audience Award winner in the PSA category
is awarded $1,000 and an expense-paid trip to attend National
Geographic’s Explorer’s Symposium.
Animation students Cody Crawford, Josh Hamilton and Scott
Houston created a stop motion PSA entitled “Together We Can
Change Our World.” The project used natural and sustainable
resources in its production. Appropriately, the students’ winning
PSA had its world premiere on the National Geographic Channel on
Wednesday, April 22 – Earth Day.
This year the contest received 100 entries, which were narrowed
down to the top 20 by the contest committee and then voted on by
a select panel of judges including top National Geographic explorers
and representatives from NGC, the National Geographic Society, and
contest partners ecoAmerica and GreenCareers by MonsterTRAK.
The judges selected a winner in each category and three runner-up
finalists to compete for the Audience Award in online voting. Online
voting took place April 1 - 15, 2009.
Vanguard Membership Changes
and New Bylaws Approved
In April, the Vanguard Membership, made up of credentialed ministers
and delegates in the Southern California District of the Assemblies of
God, convened at the denomination’s annual district council meeting.
This year there was a record attendance at the Vanguard meetings with
over 800 attendees. During the Vanguard business meeting, the voting

The National Geographic Society has been examining the issues
that impact the planet and its environment for more than a century,
working with explorers, journalists, photographers and filmmakers
all over the world. With environmental concerns reaching global
proportions, the National Geographic Channel launched a major
initiative in 2007 to inspire people to care about the planet. The
result was Preserve Our Planet - an unprecedented, long-term,
multiplatform effort help Americans understand the issues of
environmental conservation and global survival. This new phase of
the initiative furthers the channel’s commitment o grow this effort.
