B
elgrade has several thousand years
long history and as a capital of
Serbia it has been existing since
1403, the fact that is proved by
the charter of one of the most important
Serbian rulers, Despot Stefan Lazarevic.
The city has changed its names, starting
with the Celtic Singidunum and ending
with today’s Belgrade, but has always been
the place where the East and the West
competed with each other.
Thanks to this historical dimension of
the Serbian capital, this issue is dedicated
to both the past and the present. In the
premises of the National Bank of Serbia
the exhibition named “Lepenski Vir“ is on
display and it is on the Neolithic settlement
in Europe that has been discovered on the
banks of the Danube River near the Djerdap
Gorge. Talking on the future, unavoidable
are young athletes of Serbia, and especially
Ana Ivanovic, the tennis player who is
currently at the first place of the WTA
list. We are introducing and presenting
her through the excerpts of interview
this princess of the Serbian sport gave for
several world newspapers.
One of the most important writers of the
middle-age generation, Vlada Bajac, whose
books have been translated into most world
languages, is the collocutor of our journalist
in this issue of VOS MEDIATOR.
Serbia is also marked by manifestations
that are well known outside this country
borders. In its summer issue, VOS MEDIATOR
writes on the Dragacevo Assembly of
Trumpet Players in Guca, and recommends
outing to the seven lakes by Bela Crkva,
the town some 100 kilometres away from
Belgrade.
Beside all this, VOS MEDIATOR offers
review of luxury flats, apartments and
houses that can be rented or sold. There is
also an exclusive offer of building sites that
can attract investors.

Ralph Fiennes Ready for the New Role
Shakespeare in
New Belgrade
The protagonist of the “Schindler’s List“ and “English Patient“ has
chosen locations for his new movie “Coriolanus“
4
H
ollywood actor of British
origin,
Ralph
Fiennes,
searching for the suitable
location for shooting the
film that will be realized after the
Shakespeare’s tragedy “Coriolanus“ has
arrived to Belgrade this summer.
After several weeks inspection
of locations, the protagonist of the
“Schindler’s List,“ “English Patient,“
and “The Constant Gardener,“ has
decided to make his debut as a
director in – Belgrade. Although it was
expected for Fiennes and producers
of the “Oscar“ winning Ang Lee’s
“Brokeback Mountain“ to consider
offers and constructions proposed
longer, they have quickly opted for
Serbia.
For the Shakespeare’s tragedy
“Coriolanus“ Fiennes and the producers
have visited the buildings of the
National Bank in Slavija and in the
Kralja Petra Street, former Federal
Assembly building…
For the English classic screening,
they have chosen the interior of the
Federal Executive Council building in
New Belgrade that fits into the future
film scenography. One of the most
impressive interpreters of Hamlet
during the past two or three decades,
Fiennes, the winner of the “William
Shakespeare Award“ in Washington, will
act, direct, and be one of the producers
of the future film. Beside him, also is
mentioned famous French director Luc
Besson who will be in Belgrade for the
first clapper. The film will be made
during ten weeks but the preparations
will start at the beginning of the next
year.
The Belgrade press has recorded
that the Belgrade guide for the
charming actor was the Belgrade actress
Katarina Radivojevic. Ralph has visited
Belgrade at the beginning of July
and it is said his colleague, the “Oscar“
winning Rachel Weisz told him about
the beauties of our capital. Rachel
and Ralph acted together in “The
Constant Gardener“ and Weisz was in
Serbia last year and filmed “Brothers
Bloom“ with Adrien Brody. Ralph
and Katarina have met in a Belgrade
restaurant,
and
afterwards
had
dinner together. From that moment,
our beautiful actress has taken the
role of his guide through the capital
city. Katarina has showed Ralph all
the important and places of interest
in our city, without leaving out the
most important – the nightlife. Ralph
had the opportunity and pleasure of
visiting famous Skadarlija, Belgrade
boat restaurants, nightclubs and
“Silicone Valley“ (Belgrade Strahinjica
Bana Street famous for its cafes The Strahinjica Bana cafes are “among
the fanciest in the city“, and most
people “come to see and to be seen“).
During the last year Belgrade has
seen the filming of “Brothers Bloom“
with Adrien Brody in leading role and
“Romance“ in Luc Besson’s production. ●

The Fourth of July
HE The Ambassador of the United States to Serbia Mr.
Cameron Munter said that the USA and Serbia had had
difficult times and that “all the troublesome moments,
even those when there were some disagreements,
cannot wipe out long history of friendship and mutual
aspiration towards democracy and freedom, as well as
the continuation of that friendship.“
T
his year again, in the United
States Embassy in Belgrade,
the Fourth of July, i.e.,
the Independence Day was
celebrated.
Numerous
individuals
from the political and public life
of Serbia, as well as the diplomatic
corps representatives attended the
reception.
This
year’s
commemorating
the adoption of the Declaration of
Independence on July 4th, 1776 had one
novelty: upon the American anthem,
6
the Serbian hymn “Boze pravde“ was
also played and the Ambassador Mr.
Cameron Munter delivered a part of his
traditional speech in Serbian.
The United States of America
wanted the new Serbian Government
to fulfill the promises on the European
future given to its citizens, said the
American Ambassador. At the reception
organized on the occasion of the
Independence Day, Mr. Munter also said
that the USA and Serbia had had difficult
times and that “all the troublesome
moments, even those when there were
some disagreements, cannot wipe out
long history of friendship and mutual
aspiration towards democracy and
freedom, as well as the continuation of
that friendship.“
“I am happy to address you today
with great optimism regarding your
future and to show you my devotion to
your success. Thank you for coming here
and for believing in the future of Serbia,“
said Mr. Cameron Munter who has first
greeted his guests in Serbian. ●
Bastille Day
HE The Ambassador of France to Serbia Mr. Jean
Francois Terral, with the touch of the charming French
accent, wished everybody relaxing summer holidays
prior to the hard work “that is awaiting us“
O
n the occasion of the French
EU Presidency and the
Bastille Day, July 14th, that
is celebrated in France as a
national holiday, in the French Embassy
in Belgrade was organized the reception
whose host was HE The Ambassador of
France in Belgrade Mr. Jean Francois
Terral.
Beside the members of the
diplomatic corpse, among guests
there were also Serbian political life
distinguished individuals and, of course,
newly founded Government.
Welcome was completed with the
performance of the ensemble “Les
Bergers de la Montagne“ that cherishes
traditional Brittany dance and songs.
Almost one thousand guests enjoyed
in extremely nice ambiance of the
Embassy. Food was served on the terrace
and in the garden and there were selected
wines, cheeses brie and camembert,
as French symbols, but also cevapcici
that would be characterized as Serbian
specialties. Guests were also served
the American cocktails “Cosmopolitan“
and “Sex on the Beach.“ Although many
guests spoke French, Serbian language
was the dominant one, but English could
also be heard, before all thanks to the
representatives of foreign embassies in
Belgrade.
Talking in Serbian, with charming
French accent, saying everything was
all right, HE the Ambassador of France
to Serbia Mr. Jean Francois Terral
told his guests: “We have new proEuropean government. I have had the
pleasure of greeting the new ministers
and the prime minister. All this means
good omen and, at the same time, a
hint that there will be a lot of mutual
work. Europe is waiting for Serbia and
this certainly means a lot of work for
you to do in order to reach it, and for
us, France, that is the President of the
Council of the European Union and the
longstanding friend of Serbia, it means
help since we have full confidence in the
new Government,“ said the Ambassador
Terral and wished everybody relaxing
summer holidays prior to the hard work
“that is awaiting us.“

Vladislav Bajac, the Writer Whose Books
Are Waited for with Impatience
Nature Lover in
Urban Environment
Ada Ciganlija is beautiful in winter, when there are
not so many people, and when thick soup is eaten
and mulled wine drunk and like in the movie “Death
in Venice,“ everybody is sitting in chaise longues
and looking at the Sava Lake
O
ne of our best contemporary
prose
writers
Vladislav
Bajac’s new novel, “Hamam
Balkanija“ has just been
published by the Belgrade “Arhipelag“
publishing house. The novel with strong
elements of perfect essay, that is so rare
here, is on Mehmed-Pasha Sokolovic,
the Serbian converted to Islam. After
becoming one of the most important
people in the Ottoman Empire, he
managed to combine successfully his
old and new identity and thanks to his
wisdom to remain mentioned in Serbia
after good and great deeds until today.
Mr. Vladislav Bajac (1954, Belgrade)
is the writer whose every book is waited
for with great impatience. Until now he
has published novels “Knjiga o bambusu“
(1989), “Crna kutija-utopija o naknadnoj
stvarnosti“ (1993), short stories book
“Podmetaci
za
snove-Geopoeticke
basne“ (1992), “Evropa na ledjima bika“
(1988), “Druid iz Sindiduna“ (1998),
“Bekstvo od biografije“ (2001), “Evropa
ekspres“ (2003)…He has also published
two books of poetry, and his verses and
prose have been translated into many
world languages. He himself is also very
successful translator and the man who is
8
on the helm of one of the best publishing
houses in our country – “Geopoetika.“
The thing that characterizes Bajac’s
work and at the same time singles it
out from conventional “standards“ of
the Serbian contemporary prose is his
ability of putting the history and modern
times into correlation. Believing that
one should not slip into the history and
that the present, for the sake of the
future, should try to hear the history,
Vladislav Bajac that way speaks very
directly on contemporary times, and
that would be our – Serbian times, in
a wise way, evading narrow-minded
nationalism and telling us that loving
and respecting your own people at the
same time means loving and respecting
others and, whenever needed, learning
from them. This is something that those
writing book reviews often are not able
to read out.
As a Belgrade-born who has moved
fifteen times (according to his own
testimony), Bajac loves Belgrade and he
mentions it in his works either directly
or indirectly. The history of Belgrade
also has not remained untouched in the
works of this marvelous author: in his
novel “Druid iz Sindiduna“ that deals
with the period of the 4th century B.C.,
in this area, at the mouth of the Sava
and the Danube Rivers, in Sindidun,
meet and imbue the old Celtic and
Hellenic cultures. Both of them and both
the Celts and the Hellenes who were
led by Alexander the Great (Aleksandar
Makedonski) have undoubtedly left their
impacts and influence on the Slovenes.
Otherwise, Mr. Bajac thinks (and he
points it out in his latest novel “Hamam
Balkanija“) that the Celtic culture and
what has remained of it have been
pushed aside without any real need or
wish existing for them to be examined.
There must be so many traces that the
Celts have left behind in Belgrade and
all that is needed is just the will to start
the work on it.
The proof of the olden times leaving
their indelible traces and that all that is
needed is just “scratching the surface“
of the history gives us the author in his
latest novel, “Hamam Balkanija,“ where
Belgrade and Istanbul are two cities in
the very centre of the narration. During
that bloody 16th century, according
to the author, those two cities were
very cosmopolitan. And this is what he
wanted to point out:
-When I was dealing with particular
parts of the Belgrade city in the “Hamam
Balkanija“ I have used something that is
a very long time span. Therefore, there
are those coincidences thanks to which
I have discovered reasons for writing
this book: the building of architect
Bajalovic in which I am living today in
Dorcol, the one that is really an original
architectonics that cannot be seen in
Belgrade in many places. We are talking
about the Neo-Byzantine architecture
and a little bit of Secessionism and
Baroque architecture styles. Let us not
forget that Mr. Bajalovic is the author
of several Belgrade buildings such as the
Law School and the Kolarac Foundation.
He is the man who played violin and had
obvious gift for sound and therefore it is
said that the Kolarac concert hall is one
of the most beautiful acoustic halls not
only in our country but generally.
Regarding the architect Bajalovic
and Belgrade that can and must be
saved, there is an interesting story…
-Yes, Mr. Bajalovic was building a
house on the Kosancicev Venac – the
famous one of Mika Alas – and there
is story according to which Mika Alas
sent a word to Mr. Bajalovic to make
him a balcony overlooking the Sava
River. Just to remind you, this is the
balcony appearing in every photograph
9
port to be built in Belgrade according
to the one, Arsenal, or the Istanbul
shipyard. Therefore, Belgrade was the
only city that had been able to do such a
thing during those times. It had the seal
of the Big Port, and in the Dubrovnik
and Venice archives can also be found
information that Belgrade had been
considered one of the biggest and most
important ports in that time Europe.
of Belgrade guides as one of our city’s
symbols – tiny balcony of Baroque
appearance and an exquisite one.
Moreover, you know, when you look at
that house that is not so big, you realize
that the balcony absolutely stands out
from the complete architectural idea.
In addition, the small balcony, in fact,
speaks of that passionate wish to look at
something.
There are, therefore, many
beautiful details in Belgrade and a lot
of cosmopolitan in its history?
-It is obvious that Belgrade had, from
time to time (except the times of chaos),
those excursions to well done planning.
Therefrom the story on a non-existing,
any more, karavan saraj (caravansary)
and bezistan (covered market place) that
lies under the foundations of the building
I am living in, in the Cara Dusana Street.
In those times already, all that had been
built as one modern hotel whose guests
were merchants who could have been
seen in Belgrade. At that time, in the
mid 16th century, the period I am talking
about in “Hamam Balkanija,“ Belgrade
was the cosmopolitan place with so
many nations living in it that it had been
absolutely unbelievable! Starting with
various Arabian people, not only the
Turkish conquering ones who were ruling
Serbia at that time, but also travelers
from really all the countries, from Persia
to Egypt. There were also members of
many European nations: all of them
traded in Belgrade the same, diverse
way they did in Istanbul.
Even then, Belgrade had its port…
-I have found some data according
to which the Belgrade port was able to
build almost two hundred ships a year
during the period when the grand vizier
Mehmed-pasha Sokolovic ordered for the
10
Almost all the time we have been
talking about the rivers Belgrade is
located on. Today, are we aware of
their power, beauty and possibilities?
-Unfortunately, we have been talking
for a long time about Belgrade moving
down to the rivers and thanks to that,
we have all become experts on that
topic! Belgrade has that story all the
time and constant trials to do a little
bit of what it can do. If they finally
do realize the Dorcol Marina project,
it will make something really modern
and contemporary on the Danube side;
it will bring in great amount of money,
tourism, and everything else that can
be expected and is reasonable. On the
other hand, there are cycling-paths that
were made along the sides of both
rivers and I think they are absolutely
phenomenal. The elevator taking the
cyclists up to the Branko’s Bridge is
really fantastic; after all, something like
this is very rare even in Europe! What
had been jeopardizing the realization
of this project during all these decades
is the railway line. As long as it remains
there and is not removed nothing
serious can be realized regarding this
project.
There are similar examples in
other cities…
-Of course there are. I have recently
come back from the banks of the Seine
River. While there, I have been walking,
constantly comparing and thinking
about the things big city can do when
it has well done urban development
plans. Therefore, what is happening to
Belgrade and keeping it from having
it all done. That life on the banks is
something absolutely phantasmagoric.
Even the crowd does not disturb you
since it is humanized. At the Seine banks
I have met clowns, people sunbathing,
or practicing tango in the open; I have
seen police patrol boats and tourist
boats on the river… Numerous events are
going on there; that is one completely
real, parallel life of the city that is being
lived on both banks of the river.
What is it that you love in today
Belgrade?
-Beside cycling-paths I am driving
along with my daughters, I also like
strolling in Ada Ciganlija in winter. That
“Belgrade sea“ is in itself beautiful in
summer but I am not the man who loves
crowds. I adore the same area during
winter when there are not so many
people, and when thick soup is eaten
and mulled wine drunk and like in the
movie “Death in Venice,“ everybody is
sitting in chaise longues and looking at
the Sava Lake. As a writer, I have the
privilege of having admirers in some
of those log huts. Those people, who
are really adorable and have created
warm, household atmosphere have even
my photographs in their restaurants.
Walking along that part of the bank is
honestly pleasant.
Is there anything else you like in
Belgrade?
-I like the part of Belgrade called
Senjak. It is my native neighbourhood
where I have spent my early childhood
and returned to during the period of
my secondary education in Topcider.
Senjak with Dedinje and Topcider make
lovely reminiscence of those days, but
a little bit sad because the composition
of population has changed and therefore
made it difficult to return there. On the
other hand, those who do not belong
there can easily settle in that area.
Nevertheless, nothing can be done –
money has become the master of many
things in life and so it has made some
changes.
What is it that Belgrade has more
than some other world cities?
-Unlike many other people, I think
that Belgrade, regardless ever possible
criticism, has a lot of greenery and that
is what I like in my city. It is somehow
nicely located and arranged, starting
with those small parks in the Profesorska
kolonija neighbourhood, where I used
to play as a kid, all the way to those
big ones, beautiful for strolling. I am
obviously the nature lover in the urban
environment…

Unique Sculptures at the National Bank of Serbia

and other sculptures 9,000 years

S
ince the permanent exhibition
has been closed nine years
ago, opportunities are rare and
exceptional for the Belgrade
citizens and the Serbian capital guests
to enjoy in the beauty of art objects that
are being kept in the National Museum.
The exhibition named “Tajna
Lepenskog Vira“ (“The Secret of
Lepenski Vir“) comprising of seventeen
sculptures dedicated to the Sun God
from the seventh millennium B.C. was
opened on May 10th at the National Bank
of Serbia. The same day the National
Museum of Serbia, closed because of
reconstruction, celebrated its day.
In the National Bank of Serbia modern
building visitors have the opportunity
to meet Rodonacelnik (Founder of the
Family), Praroditeljka (Primogenitor),
Adam, Vodena vila (Undine), Hronos
(Chronos), and other famous sculptures 9,000 years old that
were displayed in the 1983 study exhibition at the National
Museum in Belgrade for the last time and for the first time
in 1965, two years after Lepenski Vir was discovered.
It has been nine years since the permanent archeological
exhibition at the National Museum is closed for public
visits. Belgrade audience has an opportunity to see the
greatest treasures kept at the National Museum only on
special occasions and “The Secret of Lepenski Vir” is one
of the very rare ones.
The author of the exhibition is the museum counselor
and curator of the Lepenski Vir collection at the Belgrade
National Museum, Ms. Ljubinka Babovic, former student and
longtime associate of the late professor and Academician
Dragoslav Srejovic, who gave the main contribution to the
exploration of Lepenski Vir.
The monumental anthropomorphic sculptures displayed
at this exhibition offer a unique experience, represent an
autonomous spiritual creation of hunters and gatherers of
Djerdap, and most directly testify to the complex social
structure of this society. The exhibition affords not only a
fresh experience of archaeology and Mesolithic art but also
offers a new interpretation of these outstanding items, the
most significant and interesting finds from the Lepenski
Vir, the best known archaeological site both in Serbia and
the world, located in sometimes inaccessible part of the
Djerdap Gorge.
Unique sculptures excavated in Lepenski Vir, different
interpretations of the Sun God, were placed by the home
fireplaces and were representing the greatest sacred things
for all the family members.
Excavations on the Lepenski Vir archeological site,
located on the Danube River banks in Eastern Serbia, took
place between 1965 and 1971. One of the most significant
pre-historic (Mesolithic) finds in Europe was discovered
during research of terrain to build a new hydro-electrical
power plant (Djerdap) on the Danube. Academician
Dragoslav Srejović, along with a team of his associates,
discovered the ancient monument of a very old and at that
time still unknown pre-historic culture. The pre-historic
communities, dwelling on the banks of a big river, were the
creators of the oldest sacral architecture and monumental
sculptures in Europe that we know.
Under the small Neolithic settlement discovered were
carefully planned structures, graves that point to special
rituals, plenty of objects made from bones, horns and
stone, as well as monumental stone sculptures.
After the excavations were finished, the whole site was
relocated 29.7 metres higher to avoid flooding from a new
artificial lake. The Museum of Lepenski Vir is located in
the vicinity.
Further research has showed that Lepenski Vir could
be considered the centre of the specific and long-lasting
nine thousand years old Mesolithic culture, one of the most
complex and most intriguing European cultures.
The exhibition held in the hall of the National Bank
of Serbia building that also includes video screenings on
Lepenski Vir will be open every day, except Mondays, from
10 a.m. to 10 p.m. through the end of the year. ●
Long Weekend in the Serbian Capital
The 10-Point Escape Plan:
B elgrade
Richard Byrne: As darkness falls, the city moves into the bars that
do not have closing time and most of them are along the Sava
River and in Strahinjica Bana Street
D
uring the recent years, Western
press has been publishing
articles that were describing
Belgrade with fewer prejudices
than they did before. In the course of
the last decade the American journalist
and publicist, Richard Byrne has been
the frequent visitor in the area of the
former Yugoslavia. He has been writing
for The Guardian, The Washington Post,
14
Foreign Policy, The American Prospect
and The Time Magazine… The New York
Travel Magazine has published Byrne’s
impressions that he has gained during
his visit to Belgrade and summed them
up in ten base points.
Though it’s taken the last halfdecade to shake off the darkness of
war and its sanctions, Belgrade is once
again poised to lure visitors with its
vibrant contrasts. The city’s imposing
natural beauty—verdant hills rising
above the Sava and Danube rivers—rests
uneasily alongside decaying socialist
architecture and government buildings
precision-bombed by NATO forces. By
day you can sip coffee while watching
elderly ladies going to light candles in
Eastern Orthodox chapels thick with
incense smoke, or witness samizdat and
Surrealism colliding in art galleries. But
after dark, the city rattles and jives to
an all-hours bar scene that takes hold in
nightclub boats along the river and on
Strahinjica Bana street, where patrons
spill out onto the sidewalks. Spring is
the perfect time for a long weekend in
a city where sunlight dazzles historic
parks and monasteries and dawn
hurries visitors home after long nights
of downtempo, dub, and house chased
back with cheap Montenegrin beer.
1.Getting to Belgrade requires a
connection in Western Europe. A recent
check of Thursday-to-Sunday flights from
JFK found round-trip fares as low as $672,
with connections through London, Vienna,
or Munich via Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa,
and Serbia’s national airline, JAT.
2. Skip the inconveniently located
Hyatt and Continental and check in to
Le Petit Piaf, a new hotel only twenty
steps from Belgrade’s famous Skadarlija
restaurant-bar district. The Piaf’s
ultramodern rooms are a sleek yet
comfortable alternative to the sparse
and vaguely seedy chambers of most
Balkan hotels (011-381-11-303-5252;
from $180).
3. Spend an afternoon exploring
the nooks and crannies of the ancient
fortress of Kalemegdan. Though the
main attraction is the breathtaking view
of the Danube and Sava rivers meeting
below your feet, Kalemegdan also offers
an art gallery, a military museum, and
outdoor cafés.
4. Off-the-beaten-path arts centers,
including REX and the Center for Cultural
Decontamination, favor multimedia
mash-ups of politics and punk. (A recent
exhibit at the latter by Slovenian artist
Tamara Cetkovic juxtaposed communist

5. Rock and dance music is Serbia’s
best export at the moment. In the bad
old days, street kiosks sold bootlegs
for $2, but the cops have shut those
down. You’ll have better luck finding
that Modern Quartet or Eyesburn CD at
stores like IPS and Beopolis.
6. At Kuca Cveca, the grave of
Marshal Tito (ruler of Yugoslavia
from 1945 to 1980) gives you a heady
whiff of communist kitsch. The glassy
modernist mausoleum on a hill was built
to accommodate a perpetually heavy
crush of visitors. Twenty-five years later,
you’ll likely find yourself alone with a
key figure in the Cold War.
7. A few hours before dinner,
head for Knez Mihailova street, a
lively pedestrian zone with shops and
open-air cafés. It’s the place to be
as darkness falls, when you can buy
a cheap bag of salty popcorn from
a street vendor and indulge in the
Balkan custom of korzo, or strolling
and gawking at others.
8. Serbia’s meaty cuisine is central
to its restaurant scene. Belgraders take
special guests to Daco, a rustic restaurant
where you can stuff yourself with grilled
lamb and beef dishes washed down with
beer and plum brandy. Visitors craving
respite from smoky meat will find
excellent salads, pizzas, and pastas at
Kapric.
9. Those nostalgic for New York’s
pre-Bloomberg rock scene should check
out Akademija, Southeast Europe’s most
famous rock club—dank, cigarettechoked, and super-loud. Shows tend to
start after 10 P.M. and cost about $5.
10. It’s 2 A.M. and your flight is in
four hours? Bassment spins funk and “nu
jazz” ’til the wee hours, Andergraund
favors disco-inflected house in a
cavernous space near Kalemegdan, or
you can hear some of Belgrade’s hottest
D.J.’s at Pazi Skola—and catch up on
your sleep later during the ten-hour
flight ●

The Most Famous Folk Festival
Guca,
Madness
Made in
Serbia
D
ragacevo Assembly of Trumpet
Players, held at the beginning
of August in Guca, small town
in Western Serbia, is one of
the biggest attractions of the music
tradition, folklore, and rejoicings. In
the course of the Festival days, Guca
is exciting like the Rio Carnival or
Oktoberfest in Munich or some other big
world festivities. During several days,
hundreds of thousands of lovers of folk
music, traditional dishes and drinks
converge here, and the town echoes
with the penetrating sound of trumpets
day and night.
The first Dragacevo Assembly of
Trumpet Players was held on October
16th, 1961 in the Yard: of the Church
of Sts. Michael and Gabriel in Guca
when some inventive hosts had invited
a dozen of trumpet orchestras from
all over Serbia to compete, amuse and
cheer up the people. Very soon that
music fair turned into a great assembly
that nowadays, almost half a century
later, has become popular in the whole
Europe. In Guca play orchestras that
keep track of folk music tradition from
Southern, Western and Eastern Serbia,
among them especially standing out
self-taught musicians from the Mount
Zlatibor and from the town of Vranje.
However, the trademark of Guca has
not become just thanks to fascinating
trumpet players but also pleasures of
some other kinds. Before all those are
Serbian traditional cuisine specialties.
In pottery, being made the same way
for hundreds of years, cooked are the
whole nights beans or svadbarski kupus
(“wedding cabbage“) that deserves
special attention of gourmets. Mixture
of cabbage and different kinds of meat,
cooked for hours in the open fire, has
the taste that cannot be compared with
anything else.
And while the trumpet orchestras
that usually consist of ten members
compete in rearranged football stadium,
indescribable exhilaration takes place
During several
days hundreds of
thousands of lovers
of folk music,
traditional dishes
and drinks converge
here, and the town
echoes with the
penetrating sound
of trumpets day and
night
even in the streets of this small town.
Gypsy orchestras, folk singers’ songs
and the smell of grilled meat are
mixed with the fair atmosphere and
folklore events, such as the Dragacevo
Wedding whose participants attired in
picturesque national costumes arrive
in coaches.
The most exciting moment during
several-days
celebrations
is
the
announcement of the winner after
which all the orchestras with some two
hundred trumpets play the Assembly
hymn, the song “Sa Ovcara i Kablara,“
while in the surrounding hills the
fire from prangije (unusual device,
looking like two hammers without
handle connected with long wire that
kindle gunpowder by knocking one
another) can be heard.
The whole event lasts for five
days, but the Guca Assembly can be
experienced in just one day after which
one wishes to stay longer and come
back again next year.

Ana has been named Women’s Tennis Player
of the Year 2008 by the International Sports
Press Association (AIPS), the organisation that is
made up of the world’s leading sports writers.
“I feel very honoured to receive this award
and the recognition by the International Sports
Press Association,” said Ana.
From the Diary of the Best Serbian Tennis Player
Ana Ivanovic
Is World No.1
I have achieved two
biggest goals in my
life – I won Grand
Slam and became
world No. 1 tennis
player. Nevertheless,
I still have to thrive
before I realize all of
my objectives
18
D
I
uring the Wimbledon Serbian
tennis player, Ana Ivanovic
kept a diary for the British
“Sunday Telegraph“. Here
we are bringing forward parts of her
wording published on June 29th, 2008
am beginning to understand the
pressure that Roger Federer
must
experience
everytime
he goes onto court. I admire
him so much for the way he handles
it. With time I am sure I will learn
how to deal with the expectation
that comes with being No.1. I did feel
extra pressure coming to this
tournament, but I definitely don’t
blame my defeat on that, and I still
enjoyed myself here.
O
n the positive side, I am still
just 20-years-old and I have a
lot to learn. I know that I will
make mistakes now and then,
but as long as I can learn from each
experience, I am not worried about
that.
I
n general I don’t watch much
women’s tennis: I prefer to watch
the men’s game, because from a
personal point of view I can learn
more from men’s tennis. Don’t get me
wrong: I think that women’s tennis is
in great shape at the moment and very
exciting to watch.
I
O
think that my defeat, and also that
of Sharapova, shows that there is
great depth in the women’s game.
Anyone who thinks otherwise is
ignoring the facts.
ften after a defeat to a player
ranked quite a bit lower than
me, I am asked if I was injured.
I always reply the same way:
just because you lose to someone with a
low ranking, it doesn’t mean you were
injured! There are many reasons for not
performing your best, and even so, you
must give credit to your opponent for
being the better player.
I
achieved my two biggest goals in
life by winning my first Grand Slam
and becoming No.1. But I still have
a lot to improve on before I can
achieve my other goals, and I’m excited
about the next challenges.
Ana’s Interviews
Rizzosports: Tennis brings you to
so many places across the world, do
you have a favorite?
Ana: Yes, we are lucky to visit so
many great places. Melbourne is my
favorite city. I also love visiting Paris,
Rome and London.
Rizzosports: What is the best on
court tennis advice you can give?
Ana: Enjoy yourself!
The observer: Do you feel that you
missed out on a normal teenage life?
Ana: Not really - I never liked going
out to parties. Partying and drinking
were never my thing.
The observer: Do you cry easily?
Ana: I’m quite an emotional person.
I cry a lot. I do not like conflict, so if I
have an argument with my parents I’ll
often cry. I become too emotional. I
cried after I lost in the Stuttgart Open.
Another bad day for me and she [Tatiana
Golovin] played better than me. But
there’ll be plenty more opportunities.
Tennis Week: How’s school?
Ana : It’s been tough. I’ve been
trying to finish my economy classes at
the moment. When I go back to Serbia,
I have to take few more exams. But of
course it’s hard to balance and think
of tests and studies where you’re
competing and winning but education is
extremely important, so I need to try to
accomplish both and find a time. I don’t
like math or numbers as much, so I need
a tutor obviously to get me focused.
Tennis Week: What are your
favorite subjects?
Ana : I love philosophy and psychology.
I actually wanted to major in psychology,
but that’s something that requires a
lot more face time in school and in
classroom. Maybe I’ll reconsider by the
end of career, when I have more time!
But I still love to read as much as can on
those subjects whenever I have time.
Tennis forum: You’re from a small
country. Are you aware of some of the
other small countries, like Uzbekistan,
Belarus, players coming from these
little countries that used to be part
of the Soviet Union?
Ana: Yes. I think there is many
players from these countries at the
moment, a lot of them young players. I
think it’s exciting for tennis because the
more players we have, the more better
players we have, it’s more exciting
because we have challenges all the
time. At this moment I think in women’s
tennis almost anyone can beat anyone.
That’s what brings excitement for a
crowd and also for us.
Tennis forum : How do you feel
when people say you are the prettiest
girl ever to play at Wimbledon?
Ana: Thank you. I’m very flattered.
Ana appeared on the Calcutta Times
(Indian newspapers) front page in the
first week of April and commentated
on the upcoming clay season: ‘I really
enjoy playing on clay and Berlin last
year was a turning point in my career,
not just because I won the tournament
but because I reached the top 10 during
this event’.
Ana has been listed in the 300 most
influential people, 100 most influential
women and 50 most influential
sportmen in Serbia by the Serbian daily
newspapers ‘Blic’. ●

Seven Lakes by Bela Crkva
Mediterranean Feeling
Faraway from the Sea
Bessie is not a
dragon but a 150
kilograms catfish and
unlike the Scottish
specimen, Nessie,
this one has been
seen dabbling;
when it falls into
the water, it makes
waves as if the car
has been thrown into
the lake
20
N
essie is in Scotland. But where
is Bessie? This enigma can be
easily solved. The quest for
the Loch Ness monster Nessie
is still in progress and Bessie is right
here, one hundred kilometres away
from Belgrade, right over the Banat
plane and just close to the Danube
River and Deliblatska Pescara (Deliblato
Sand). Bessie is not a dragon but a
catfish, and the very big one though,
weighing even 150 kilograms. Unlike
Nessie, the Scottish specimen, this one
has been seen dabbling, either for fun
or boredom; and when it falls into the
water it makes waves as if the car has
been thrown into the lake. Bessie was
the reason we made our way for Bela
Crkva, one hot Tuesday, exactly the day
unofficial bathing season started on the
lakes in the vicinity of this small town.
Bela Crkva boasts of even seven
lakes that emerged after sand and
gravel extraction. That several decades
long work brought back lost memory of
the Panonian Sea that had disappeared
some five million years ago leaving
behind lakes, and after that swamps the
Banat inhabitants got rid of only in the
18th and 19th centuries. Today the Bela
Crkva lakes are real tourist paradise
that is being discovered not only by our
weekend tourists but also by foreigners.
Most famous are Vracevgajsko and
Gradsko or Glavno Lakes but also
attractive are Saransko and Sljunkara
ones. The first two overwhelmingly
resemble coastal centres. They have
beach
restaurants,
promenades,
hotel, cottages, and apartments for
rent. Especially interesting is the
Vracevgajsko Lake that has been turned
into the camp settlement with perfectly
organized beach and artificial island
that can be reached via small wooden
bridge. Carefully attended green lawns,
deck chairs, sunshades, and cocktails in
the restaurant – all these contribute to
the real Mediterranean feeling at the
distance of some thousand kilometres
away from the sea.
Good roads from Belgrade to Bela
Crkva wind through adorable landscape.
While travelling through the Deliblatska
Pescara one is encountering forests
that are replacing wavy dunes. The
Banat villages that smell of celestial
peace, thrilled wheat and the Van
Gogh sunflowers replace deep shades
of groves. All these make the Eastern
Banat, the mix of the Austro-Hungarian
and Serbian culture and architecture,
or better to say baroque, Viennese
secession and Serbian heritage. In
this area, boundaries were moved and
peoples were mixing, and that past
was filled up with yellow sand from the
Deliblatska Pescara. Only the people
who used to live there and still do, seem
somehow the same, even today. Calm
and diligent. As if they were the part
of some naïve artists’ paintings. At the
beginning of the 18th century the Turks
were driven away from this area and
the Germans from Hessen were settled.
Then the Serbs arrived and after them
the Romanians and Czechs as well as
many others. All of them have built their
churches that even today mostly ring for
evening services making this region look
like real Europe gathered in the small
area. They were dealing in winegrowing,
floriculture, various handicraft but also
exclusive production of silk. Deliblatska
Pescara with its flora was extremely
suitable for silkworm growing.
When one gets hungry and enjoys
in the lakes fully, when it is checked
whether sunflowers turn towards the sun
or against it, it is time for lunch. From
Bela Crkva the road leads towards Stara
Palanka. It is neither a small town nor a
real village. Just thirteen houses and six
kafanas make this unusual place on the
Danube River some fifteen kilometres
away from Bela Crkva and close to the
spot where the Nera River, the shortest
tributary, joins the Danube River. Most
of the kafanas are facing the wide river
and across it Romania and Carpathian
peaks. There is also a ferry and less
known border crossing. Nevertheless,
the reason people visit this place are
the famous fishermen among which
some also own kafanas. Therefore,
whatever they catch they serve it in
your plate. Perch, carp… Tables are
covered and loaded with portions that
are unthinkable for city restaurants. No
one can eat everything that is served.
Fish soup for two can feed six persons
and there is always some fish that
remains on the plate and therefore
could be brought back home. Hosts are
always satisfied. Mostly because, as a
rule, their guests keep coming back.
Mythic European river Danube has
brought it all and from that place, one
can take unforgettable memories.

Doing Business
World business standards in
doing luxurious real estate
business. Renting, sale,
investing, short renting and
presentation are the identity
of the specialized VOS
MEDIATOR Agency
V
OS MEDIATOR is the real
estate
agency
specialized
in luxury real estate renting
and selling; it keeps track of
developments at the real estate market
and successfully embraces the European
business model in this sphere.
The founding of this Agency has
triggered the need to make the
Belgrade apartments’ market more
available and effective according to
the business people and big companies’
requirements. It has specialized in
work with foreigners who are coming
to Belgrade in great numbers. VOS
MEDIATOR operations could shortly be
defined as modern and even easy-going
way of enabling the interested party to
get rent or ownership of the business
space, apartment, and villa or luxury
apartment. This Agency is specialized
in helping foreigners to learn local
conditions, legal regulatory rules, and
even the Belgrade real estate market
great offer standards. Therefore our
grateful clients are business people,
embassies and foreign firms that can
rent or buy apartments, business space

highly professional way.
22
The core of our dealing is mediation
in real estate renting. Also the market

We are very proud of the properties
management system that is very

Speaking about the real estate rent, the
owners often entrust our Agency with
taking care of their apartments. That
way the standards of the whole offer
we have at our disposal are being set.
Our Agency pays the rent and all the
other expenses and takes care of the
maintenance. In case the owner does not
have resources for fixing up the apartment
he/she authorizes our Agency to do the
renovation and adjustment according to
the world standards. Upon completion
the apartment can be rented.
Properties management is easy-going
way of doing business also because the
owner and our client do not have the
need to get in touch and bother each
other. All the client’s needs our Agency
fulfills. This means not only maintenance
but also everything that has to do with
legal or ownership aspect of the rented
space.
VOS MEDIATOR also has interesting

language in client’s choice. Final stage
is – the key presentation.
VOS Center is located in the city
Center, in the immediate vicinity
of the Kalemegdan Park. It offers
big parking space, but in case
of
clients’ wish,
the Agency’s
air-conditioned cars will drive them to
our premises.

“MADERA“ RESTAURANT – TRADITION ALONG WITH EUROPEAN STANDARDS
The Temple of the
Belgrade Spirit
K
afana has been a cult place
in Belgrade since the mid19th century when the Turkish
khans and public kitchens
were turning into the places where
people could sit, drink, eat, rejoice,
and usually talk politics and even hatch
a conspiracy. Therefore, the spirit of
Belgrade is completely inseparable
from the spirit of kafanas since in
those places founded were political
parties, newspapers; people were
acting like brokers and were buying
and selling; city news and gossips were
spreading…
“Madera“ restaurant, in Kralja
Aleksandra Street, at the rim of
the Tasmajdan Park, is one of those
traditional places. Although this is
a modern restaurant, completely
refurbished and adapted, that has
introduced European standards and
modern design, many things that
remind of tradition of the old Belgrade
kafana have remained. Those are,
before all, its regular guests who
58
are specially taken care of, then
specialties that meet criteria of both
international and national cuisines and
finally, “Madera“ has kept the spirit of
gathering and socializing. Therefore,
it is also well known outside Belgrade.
Businesspersons and tourists from
former Yugoslav republics remember
this place as it used to be some twenty
or thirty years ago and they frequent
it also today. For the time being, there
are no surprises for them. They are
still greeted with the same kindness,
high standards and criteria, with the
same respect, in the way it used to be
so many years ago. That is the feeling
guests experience first time they enter
this temple of the Belgrade spirit.
In addition to all this “Madera“
also offers splendid cuisine. For this
occasion, we would like to recommend
national dishes that have become the
trademark and identification sign of this
restaurant. For decades very popular
was dry stew that is prepared with
pork loin, stewed tomatoes, onions and
peppers. Lamb dish in kajmak, national
veal soup or crepes “Madera“-crepes au
gratin, filled with raisins and walnuts,
topped with chocolate are also the part
of the regular menu and much wanted
specialties of this restaurant.
However, not all these would be
enough had not “Madera“ had one of the
most beautiful ambiances in Belgrade. Big
hall is pleasant both during hot summer
days and in winter. Garden has already
been verified place for enjoyment. Like
restaurant, it is also situated in the
centre of the park, under the crowns
of the old trees. Modern technology has
been engaged in making the atmosphere
pleasant, meaning that in one part of
the garden there is an elegant roof that
sprays fine mist during hot summer days
and that way lowers the temperature to
pleasant 20 to 25 degrees Centigrade.
Thanks to all this “Madera“ restaurant
is the favourite place of well known and
famous Belgrade artists, athletes, and
journalists, as well as many members of
the diplomatic corpse. ●
RESTAURANT “PORTO MALTESE” 52, Francuska St., Tel: 322 5624
Smells and Tastes of
the Mediterranean
C
oming to the “Porto Maltese“
restaurant makes an unusual
event. Every guest evokes dear
memories on some seaports
and summer adventures. Sea smells
become so vivid and accompanied with
plates full of mussels, crabs or good
fish. This uncommon place located at
the end of Francuska Street in Belgrade
is the product of the people who have
discovered formula for making the time
in their restaurant exciting both for
their guests and themselves.
This restaurant came to life
exactly ten years ago. In the meantime
it appeared that the idea was
predestined for broader dimension.
Currently in business there are 15
restaurants of the same name in
Russia, Belarus and Ukraine and
there will soon be one in Boston. We
are talking here of the real catering
chain that has originated in Belgrade
and is now branching through the whole
world. And the service everywhere is
of the same level and quality and the
ambiance is recognizable.
While entering the “Porto Maltese“
you are also coming into the calm
harbour where the culinary miracles are
being materialised. There is a principle
for every guest to choose the fish and
get a feeling of being at the market of a
small Mediterranean town. The fish and
seafood are weighed on a scale placed
near the kitchen. That way everything
chosen ends its way on the plate. All
the market prices are written in chalk
and the smallest possible quantity is 100
grams. The food that has been chosen
goes into the kitchen that is in front of
the guests’ eyes, separated from them
only by a glass partition. On the menu
there are various fish, shells, octopuses,
squids... Everything that sea offers and
gives. All of this is prepared on grill,
steam, or any other way the guest
prefer.
An unavoidable companion is
wine, all sorts of wine that match fish
specialties.
In the meantime, while waiting
for the food measured on the “market
counter“ to be prepared, guests can help
themselves with the cold buffet placed
in the small boat designed according to
the fishing one.
The fish, olive oil, sea salt – all this
make the smell and taste one cannot
resist. This is certainly the reason of
the great success of the restaurant
chain “Porto Maltese,“ the first one in
Serbia to get the ISO 9001 certificate,
the first to sell franchise in Ukraine, the
first Serbian restaurant that will have its
counterpart in the USA.
It could be said that the Belgrade
“Porto Maltese“ is the favourite
place of gourmets and good cuisine
connoisseurs. There you can often see
athletes, famous artists, journalists,
businessmen, people who have come to
enjoy in Mediterranean flavours.
But there is one more unique thing
in the Belgrade “Porto Maltese.“ Cooks
and all the staff scheduled for the
restaurants in the “Porto Maltese“
chain are trained here. Therefore
the standard is equalized so that the
foreign guests coming to the Belgrade
“Porto Maltese“ can expect the same
service, same specialties and the same
experience everywhere from Moscow
to Boston.

Botanical Garden “Jevremovac“
Japanese
Gardens
at Master
Jevrem
I
n the Belgrade city centre, over the
area of about five hectares, spreads
great green oasis – Botanical
Garden “Jevremovac,“ the park
made for the pleasure of senses where
one can learn a lot about nature. One
part of the Belgrade University Faculty
of Biology and the Institute of Botany
60
are also situated in this place. For the
emergence of this scientific and cultural
heritage, one of the most deserving is
the prominent Serbian scholar Josif
Pancic. In other words, one of the
most valuable and richest herbarium
collections not only in Serbia but also
in the whole of the South-East Europe
In the open ground
of the Botanical
Garden, in the
Belgrade city centre,
there are more than
300 species of trees
and shrubs and more
than 700 herbaceous
species of native,
European and exotic
plants
has been established in 1861 when Josif
Pancic made and donated his collection
to the “Great School” in Belgrade.
In 1889, on the occasion of his son
Alexander’s first birthday, King Milan
Obrenovic, for the purposes of the
Botanical Garden, bestowed on the
“Great School“ the property he had
inherited from his grandfather Jevrem.
The property across the Palilula barracks
King Milan donated on condition that
the Botanical Garden is named after his
ancestor Jevrem Obrenovic, the great
lover of the national culture. Since
then, the Belgrade Botanical Garden
has been named “Jevremovac“ and
Pancic’s followers have been developing
the garden through their lectures and
research work in the field of botany.
Three years later, over the area
of 500 square metres, the greenhouse
sprang up in the “Jevremovac.“ With
the two wings connected by the central
dome, at the end of the 19th century,
it was one of the largest and most
beautiful greenhouses in this part of
Europe. The greenhouse, bought from
the Dresden firm ”Mozetin,” today
is still not only the decoration of the
Botanical Garden it is situated in and
the town it belongs to, but also the
home of more than 1,100 tropical and
subtropical plants. In the open ground
of the Botanical Garden there are
more than 300 species of trees and
shrubs and more than 700 herbaceous
species of native, European and exotic
plants. In addition to the greenhouse
and open grounds, in Botanical
Garden there are also premises of the
Institute of Botany, herbarium, library,
lecture halls, and laboratories where
young botanists study morphology of
algae, fungi, and plants, physiology
of plants, ecology and geography of
plants, microbiology and environment
protection. Otherwise, herbarium of
the Institute of Botany and Botanical
Garden “Jevremovac” of the Belgrade
University Faculty of Biology numbers
more than 150,000 of herbarium
sheets containing plant material
collected in the Balkan Peninsula and
a great number of exsiccates obtained
through the exchange with other
countries in Europe and beyond. On
the other hand, it is not surprising
that the library of the Institute and
Botanical Garden “Jevremovac” is one
of the oldest and richest in this part of
the world. In addition to 200 scientific
and professional journals, the library
also boasts of more than 6,000 books.
Among the trees of the silver linden,
horse chestnut, maple, and eastern
hornbeam, nature lovers are greeted
by the Botanical Garden old-timer – the
English oak. One time uncrowned ruler
of Sumadija, the English oak, resists
historical tempests and hopes for the
ripe old age of some 1,000 years. Beside
the English oak, some fifty metres high,
Maritime and Macedonian oaks can also
be found in “Jevremovac.“ The most
famous tree in the Botanical Garden
is surely the one bearing the name
of its founder – the Pancic’s spruce.
There are also pine molika, Himalayan
pine, gigantic sequoia from the North
America and two deciduous conifers –
larch and the North American swampy
cypress that, when it grows old, forms
aerial roots that grow above land. At
the entrance of “Jevremovac“ there is
a yew-tree that is considered holly in
Serbia. There is a belief that a yew-tree
brings soundness and longevity.
Although Belgrade is thousands
of kilometres away from deserts and
jungles, their spirits is brought by the
water gardens and its pools, creeks
and aquariums that are inhabited
with the most interesting dwellers of
water habitats. The unique pool king
dominates over even the smallest plants
that blossom in the water gardens of
“Jevremovac“ and that would be water
lily. In the Botanical Garden jungle, one
can see medicinal, edible, venomous
plants, and also carnivorous plants that
from the tree crowns allure insects with
their sweet smells. The spirit of the
waterless hot deserts of America and
Africa in Belgrade is brought by cactuses
and pulpy plants.
Recently the Botanical Garden
“Jevremovac“ has acquired the smells
of the Far East. It was presented with
the Japanese Gardens, i.e., landscape
gardens that have been conceived back
in the 6th century in Japan. In the
Japanese Gardens, on Master Jevrem’s
property, mindful layout of stones makes
them look like mountains, pools become
oceans, trees are forests and running
water resembles rivers.
With the existence of the Botanical
Garden King Milan Obrenovic succeeded
in making his grandfather and his name
immortal, and famous botanist Josif
Pancic realised his dream of presenting
the whole world vegetation in the small
area.
