market report
A big thank you to all our readers who have
sent in their thoughts on what makes the
Market so special. The winner receives a
$100 Market gift voucher. Did you know
that the Market has a huge variety of
general merchandise (non-food) goods?
It’s one of the best places in Melbourne to
get your winter wardrobe shopping done!
Our cover stars
cosy up for winter.
You can find absolutely everything you could
need at the Market. Veg, meat, dairy, clothes and
knic-knacs. I’ll be getting a new winter coat from
the Market shortly!
Andrea, 3070
I love everything about the Market. The whole
atmosphere. All the stalls, the different foods,
the bargains that are found, and not forgetting
the jam donuts – love ’em! It is a very family
orientated Market, and a great day out.
Stavroula, 3168
The freshness and value of the fruit and vegetables.
STEPHEN, 3126
I like the fact that I know that I can
find almost all the things I need in
one place, ranging from fruits and veg
to clothes and accessories. Also, the
products are really cheap compared to
stores and supermarkets. After I do
my weekly shopping at the Market,
I feel happy about the great deals
and savings I’ve made.

Winter at
inter is no excuse to stay
inside when you can
drop into the Market
for all your winter needs. We’ve
got winter woollies covered with
hats, gloves, scarves and those ever
dependable sheepskin boots that
the Market is famous for. In this
issue of the magazine, we’ll also
show you where to get a pick-me-up
for when you’ve got the winter blues,
as well as where to go for a warming
soup at the end of your shop.
Once you’re covered for the
briskness of a Melbourne winter,
then you mustn’t miss our Seasonal
Stars with Ian Curley from Channel
7’s Conviction Kitchen on 10 June,
or our annual Kids Footy Forum
where you can come and meet
some of your favourite players.
Send Us Your Feedback
Queen Victoria Market has been a
Melbourne icon for more than 130 years.
With more than 10 million visitors a year,
it’s very much a place where locals come to
meet, and tourists seek to visit, to enjoy a
uniquely Melbourne experience.
This month, Madison Brown from
Melbourne’s Vixens netball team
also shares with us her insider’s
tips to shopping at the Market
and what she loves about the
good ol’ Queen Vic.
Queen Victoria Market is loved and ‘owned’
by you – so we would love to hear your
thoughts on what makes this place so special!
Jump onto qvm.com.au and answer
these questions:
1. What are your favourite general
merchandise items at the Market?
2. What would you like to see the general
merchandise section offer?
One lucky reader will win a $100
Market shopping voucher just by
sending in their feedback. We will publish
a selection of the best letters right here
in MarketLife, so check the next edition
to see if you’re featured.

at the Market
Seeking refuge from the cold? Head
straight for Vic Market Place Food Court
(Map #25) and fill up with a hearty meal.
Funk Fish (81 Victoria St) Tasty crab nuggets,
chunky fillets of fish, calamari and scallops, and
a range of sushi rolls are just some of the seafood
treats on offer at Funk Fish. With owner Ashley
behind the grill and all fish purchased fresh from
the Market, you know you’re getting the very
best. Fully licensed, you can also enjoy a glass
of wine or a beer with your meal.
Pide Bread Bakery (79 Victoria St) Refuel with
a freshly baked on the premises pide bursting
with haloumi, mint and tomato, home-made
hummus and baba ghanoush dips and glutenfree falafels. Still hungry? There’s also Tony’s
lovingly tended rotisserie spit – usually chicken
or lamb bought fresh from the Market.
Café Verona (77 Victoria St) For delicious and
homely Italian food head for Café Verona. There’s
freshly made tortellini, ravioli and beef lasagne,
tomato and olive pizza, ham piadinas and Carla’s
famous sultana-studded Sicilian doughnuts.
Ripe (75 Victoria St) For a real winter buster, try
one of Ripe’s freshly made pies, like the chunky
beef. There are also a range of wraps.
Canton Fast Food (73 Victoria St) Sip on
warming Chinese tea while slurping delicious tom
yum soup or a Malaysian laksa. There’s also curry
beef rendang, vegetarian Singapore noodles and
pork dim sum, all made on the premises by Casey,
a 10-year veteran of the Market.
Drums Café (71 Victoria St) Let the gentle heat of
a lentil and spinach curry, chilli chicken tikka or a
lamb vindaloo warm you from the inside. There’s
also plenty of naan to mop everything up with,
and refreshing mango lassis.

Rug up by an open fire
and enjoy these seasonally
inspired meal ideas
Broccoli
This delicious pasta recipe is a quick
and easy mid-week dinner. In a dry
frypan, gently toast a handful of
breadcrumbs. Once golden, tip onto
a plate but keep the frypan going and
add a splash of olive oil. Add bitesized pieces of pancetta or bacon, and
cook for a few minutes before adding
a splash of white wine. Simmer until
the wine has reduced. Add uncooked
broccoli florets and toss until the
florets are drenched in the pancettawine liquid and just cooked. Throw
in a handful of capers, anchovies and
black olives. Keep the contents of the
pan moving for a few minutes. Add
cooked pasta and mix, so that all the
strands of pasta are coated evenly in
the mixture. To serve, sprinkle with
the toasted breadcrumbs and grate
over some fresh parmesan.
Enjoy a break

Hungry for
Lemons
Like a big warm hug, this simple
recipe for lemon delicious pudding
will go down a treat on a cold winter
night. Cream 60 grams of butter
with the grated rind of 1 lemon and
1½ cups of caster sugar, then add 2
egg yolks (reserve whites). Stir in 3
tablespoons of self-raising flour and
1½ cups of milk. Beat the 2 egg whites
until stiff and fold into the mixture,
with the juice of 1 lemon. Pour into a
buttered dish and bake at 180°C for
45 minutes. Serve hot out of the oven.
Parsnips
Honey-roasted parsnips are the perfect
side dish for any roast meat. Quarter
and core parsnips before placing on
a roasting tray. Sprinkle with salt
and pepper and drizzle with olive oil.
Roast in a 210°C oven for 30 minutes
or until the parsnips are cooked
through when tested with a fork.
Drizzle over some honey and sprinkle
with sesame seeds before placing on
the table.
Jerusalem Artichokes
Grab a crusty loaf of bread and try this
filling soup for a quick winter supper.
Heat olive oil in a large saucepan and
add 800 grams of peeled and chopped
Jerusalem artichokes, 500 grams of
peeled and chopped potatoes, 2 finely
chopped rashers of bacon, 2 bay leaves
and some fresh thyme sprigs, then
cook over a medium heat, stirring
occasionally, for 5 minutes. Add 1 litre
of chicken stock and 3 cups of water,
reduce heat and cook uncovered for 30
minutes. Before serving, discard the
bay leaves and thyme, and season with
salt and freshly ground pepper.
Pink Lady Apples
A piping hot apple crumble is a
delicious winter warmer. Peel and
core 5 apples, then roughly cut into
bite-sized cubes and toss through ½
cup of caster sugar combined with 1
teaspoon of cinnamon, before placing
in a buttered serving dish. To make
the crumble, combine 1 cup of plain
flour with ¾ of a cup of brown sugar,
¾ of a cup of oats, 1 tablespoon of
cinnamon, 1 teaspoon of ground
nutmeg and 3 cloves in a bowl and mix
well. Melt 150 grams of butter and stir
through the crumble mixture before
evenly spreading over the apples. Bake
at 180°C for 35 minutes. Serve with a
scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop
of fresh cream.
Warming winter soups to keep you going this winter.
Sip on a warming cup of miso from Market newcomer
Sushi Kissaten, while you explore the Market’s sheds for
goodies. Housed in F Shed, along Peel St, you’ll also find a
delicious selection of sushi and sashimi made using ingredients
bought fresh from the Market. When it’s cold outside expect to
find happy eaters crowded around tables slurping large bowls of
ramen and udon noodle soups brimming with wholesome vegies
or topped with crunchy vegetable tempura. The menu changes
each season to ensure that only the best seasonal produce is used.
And, in additional to warming soups, you can also chow down
on Japanese specialities like succulent teriyaki chicken donburi
and exotic grilled eel.
Invita
76 Therry St
Map #7
Offering a range of 8 to 10 soups, at Invita you’ll be hard-pressed
not to find a tasty soup with which to chase away the winter
chills. There might be a rich red lentil soup or a hearty potato and
leek, perfect for dipping a crusty bread roll in. A firm believer in
cooking healthy meals for healthy people, Invita’s Janaka Wijeratne
(pictured) uses only organic, bio-dynamic or sustainable produce
for his delicious vegetarian food. And in addition to nourishing
soups, you’ll find tofu burgers bursting with the goodness of
brown rice, a different sweet vegan muffin every day, a dairy-free
cheesecake, decadent vegan and gluten-free chocolate cake, and a
well-stocked smoothie and juice bar, offering health-boasting extras
like spirulina, barley greens and flax-seed oil.

Health Kick Start, a super juice
made from tomatoes, carrot,
celery, parsley and mint. For a
boost of vitamin C, try the madeto-order C Breeze with orange
juice, banana and strawberries.
Invita (Map #7; 76 Therry St) not
only make healthy vegetarian
food (see opposite for more
information), they also have a
juice and smoothie bar. Fruitpacked smoothies are made
using organic or biodynamic

Nothing beats a cold-busting
massage. Get the circulation
flowing at the hands of one
of Dr Shen’s trained massage
therapists at Shen Chinese

with a head, neck and shoulder

massage, a spot of reflexology
or traditional cupping and
acupuncture. For a traditional
Thai massage, head to Sabai Thai
(Map #20; 143 Victoria St). A leg
massage will boost energy levels
and relieve tension and is perfect
for winter sluggishness.
Nothing beats a hot honey toddy
to soothe a dry and scratchy
throat. Nick and Carolina from
Land of Soy & Honey (Map #11;
Shop 10–11, Dairy Hall) stock
an extensive range of honey,
including the powerful antibacterial Manuka honey. Nick
recommends a dollop of Super
Bee’s Active Manuka Honey, with
a shot of whiskey and a squeeze
of lemon in a mug of boiled water.
Seeking real winter comfort food
to keep you fighting fit? Grab a
bag of apples from The Apple
Corner (Map #24; Stall 23–26,
B Shed) for a piping hot apple
pie. You’ll be spoilt for choice
thanks to a range that includes
new-season Pink Lady, Royal
Gala, Golden Delicious, Fuji and
Granny Smith apples. Sit down to
a steaming pot of juicy mussels
from Limnos Seafood (Map
#12; Shop 32, Meat Hall). Scrub
and de-beard a bag of green
mussels before throwing them in
a pot with a chopped onion, two
minced garlic cloves, a handful
of chopped parsley, a bay leaf,
two cups of white wine and a
generous knob of butter. Cook on
a low heat for five minutes before
giving the pot a good shake and
cooking for a further minute.
Ladle mussels and broth into
individual bowls and serve with
crusty bread. For a quick and easy
casserole, head to Jago’s Quality
Meats (Map #8; Shop 19, Meat
Hall) and get some of their best
thick sausages. Perfect with root
vegetables and plenty of gravy.
Unwind after the perfect winter
meal with a glass of liquor from
Vital Wine Direct (Map #26;
Stall 89–90, I Shed). Joseph
recommends the Monichino
Muscat fortified wine for
the ladies (“It’s perfect with
chocolate”) and the 30-year-old
Monichino white muscat for
the boys.
And proving that you can get just
about anything at the Market,
head to Market Pharmacy (Map

523 Elizabeth St) for their range
of prescription-only and overthe-counter medicines!

Place the butter and a drizzle
of olive oil in a saucepan over
a medium heat. Add the onion
and garlic, put the lid on and
cook until the onions are soft
and translucent. Add the
pumpkin and stir to combine.
Pour in enough stock to just
cover the pumpkin by about 1.5
centimetres. Season well with salt
and pepper. Cook at a simmer
for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the
pumpkin is very tender. Allow the
soup to cool slightly, then blend
to a purée using a stick blender
(if the soup is too thick add a little
more stock or water). Taste, and
season with more salt and pepper
if necessary. Stir in the cream, if
using. To serve, ladle the soup
into bowl, and top with the crispy
bacon bits.
