The new Oilers netminder has wasted little time in making an impact with his hometown
team. In just his fourth game with the Oilers, the Spruce Grove native posted a 59save, 3-0 shutout against the San Jose Sharks, shattering the previous NHL record.

THIS IS OIL COUNTRY
It’s a pretty remarkable feat when a hockey player becomes a hometown hero in just his fourth
game with his team, but that’s exactly what Oilers goalie and Spruce Grove native Ben Scrivens
achieved on an unforgettable January night at Rexall Place.
In just his fourth game after being traded to his
hometown squad from the Los Angeles Kings, the
27-year-old put forth one of the greatest single game
goaltending performances in NHL history in a 3-0 Oilers
win over San Jose on January 29. The Sharks fired 59
shots on the Edmonton net, and Scrivens turned aside
every last one of them to earn the unfathomable shutout.
Not only did Scrivens set a new Oilers franchise record
for saves in a game, previously held by the great Bill
Ranford, he also shattered the NHL record for saves in
a regulation shutout (Phoenix’s Mike Smith stopped 54
shots in a Coyotes win two seasons ago.) Not too shabby
for a netminder playing in just his 55th career game.
The best of his three perfect periods came in the middle
frame, which saw him make 22 of his 59 saves, many
of them of the highlight-reel variety. Scrivens made an
unbelievable glove stop on Bracken Kearns, a save on a
shorthanded breakaway by Patrick Marleau, a sprawling
pad save again on Marleau moments later, and another
jaw-dropping glove save on Jason Demers.
The Demers save garnered a standing ovation from the
Oilers faithful at Rexall Place. Chants of “Scrivens!
Scrivens! Scrivens!” rained down from the raucous crowd
that could barely believe the display of excellence they
were witnessing between the Oilers pipes. It was a dream
night for Scrivens, who grew up cheering for another
Oilers goalie that had his share of memorable moments.
“Obviously, growing up around Edmonton, the Oilers were
my team,” he recalled, referencing Oilers squads of the
late 1990s. “That was about the time where they’d sneak

into the playoffs in eighth place every year and upset the
Avalanche or Dallas. It was a stretch of four or five years
where they did that every year. Todd Marchant’s goal in
overtime, and CuJo (Curtis Joseph) was always making
the big saves. Now, to have the chance to play for the
team I grew up watching, it’s an honour to wear the logo.”
Scrivens was the go-to puck-stopper for his hometown
Spruce Grove Saints in his final year playing in the
Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) in 2005-06,
posting a stellar 27-12-2 record and earning AJHL
all-star honours. Whereas players who take the Major
Junior (WHL) route often have a more direct path to the
professional ranks, those who play Junior A (AJHL) are
mostly aiming for a NCAA scholarship to play hockey and
attend college in the United States.
Scrivens, an all-star in the classroom as well, was
offered a scholarship to the prestigious Ivy League
school, Cornell University, in Ithaca, New York. He played
four seasons for the Big Red men’s hockey team, serving
as a backup as a freshman, then taking the reins as
the number one netminder the following three NCAA
campaigns. As a senior in 2009-10, he posted a 21-9-4
record with a stingy 1.87 GAA and .934 save percentage,
earning him ECAC goalie of the year honours and a
selection as a first-team All American. Most notably, he
was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, given to the
national player of the year.
Undrafted, he signed as a free agent with the Toronto
Maple Leafs in 2010. He split 2010-11 between the
ECHL’s Reading Royals and the AHL’s Toronto Marlies,
where he played for current Oilers bench boss Dallas
Eakins. Scrivens eventually back-stopped the Marlies to
the AHL’s 2012 Western Conference title, posting a 1.92
GAA and .935 save percentage during the Calder Cup
playoffs.
“He’s hungry, that’s for sure. Ben’s trying to establish
himself in this league,” Eakins said of being reunited
with the goalie. “He believes that he can be a
very good goaltender in this league. I was
able to watch part of his development.
He’s extremely dedicated to his craft,
he’s a real technical guy. He’s an
intelligent kid and a guy of high
character. He smells opportunity.”

“Dallas is a great guy,” Scrivens added. “He was very
instrumental in me making the jump from the AHL to the
NHL with Toronto. I’m really excited to be back to working
hard under him. I have a ton of respect for him and what
he does in his approach to the team.”
Scrivens got that first crack at NHL action one year
ago when he was part of the Maple Leafs goaltending
tandem alongside James Reimer. He played 20 games
with a 7-9-0 record and a pair of shutouts during the
lockout-shortened campaign before being acquired by
the Kings last June. L.A.’s plan for him was to be the
backup for all-star Jonathan Quick, but when Quick
was injured in early November, Scrivens got his chance
to be number one and ran with it. He went 7-5-4 in 19
appearances, posting a 1.97 GAA, .931 save percentage
and three shutouts.
Scrivens wasn’t the only up-and-coming Kings puckstopper playing well in Quick’s absence though, as
Martin Jones also established himself as a NHL-calibre
goalie. With three solid netminders and only two
spots available upon Quick’s return, L.A. was left in a
precarious situation and dealt Scrivens to Edmonton on
January 15 for a 2014 third-round draft pick.
In the 11 games between Scrivens’ arrival in Edmonton
and the Olympic break, the Oilers rode some strong
EDMONTONOILERS.COM
l
play by their new goalie tandem of The Professor (his
nickname alluding to his Ivy League schooling and
general intellect) and Ilya Bryzgalov to a 5-4-2 record.
The team looks to use the rest of the 2013-14 campaign
as an audition for both netminders, who become
unrestricted free agents this summer.
“This gives us an opportunity to have a pretty good look
at him going forward here from now through the end of
the year to see how he could possibly fit into our longerterm goaltending plans,” Oilers GM Craig MacTavish
said. “He’s got a shot to come in here and really establish
himself in the National Hockey League.”
Having played for three different teams in less than a
year, Scrivens says he’d love to solidify his future with
a multi-year contract this summer. He’d also be thrilled
to have that opportunity with his hometown squad. And
even though he’s already etched his name in the Oilers
record books, he knows he still has plenty to prove. It’s
all about keeping the window small, though.
“My job is to come in and try to stop as many pucks as
I can every time I get on the ice,” Scrivens said. “I just
come in, try to make the first save, and after that just
focus on the next one. Each game is a new challenge
for me.”

My favourite minor hockey coach was high school coach Ryan Klanow because he/she was
the first coach that developed me to the next level . My most memorable minor hockey
moment came when I played for the Plymouth Stingrays and we won the State
Championship .
Before making it to the NHL, I played for Michigan State . The biggest challenge I’ve faced during
my career is getting to the next level .
My first impression of Edmonton was that it’s hockey crazy . My favourite part about playing in
Oil Country is the atmosphere in the building . During the season I live with my wife .
The best thing about that is she makes great meals and the worst thing is nothing, it’s
all great :) .
I’m most excited about the 2013-14 Oilers season because it’s a fresh start and a new
beginning with a new coach . Our greatest strength is our speed and the thing I’d like to
see us work on the most this season is being strong in the D-zone which will lead to
good offence .

confidence and life skills. They offer programs like Rogers Raising the Grade to help kids
with their studies. The Club is a place where kids can drop in, so they’re less likely to drop out.

VEGAS BABY!
Molson Game Day Live champion Chris Holmes headed to 2014 NHL Awards!
By Kelsey Spohn
What happens in Vegas might stay in Vegas, but our Molson
Canadian Game Day Live champion, Chris Holmes, will be
bringing home some tough-to-top memories following his
once-in-a-lifetime trip to the 2014 NHL Awards this summer.
Holmes won bragging rights on April 2 at The Ranch Roadhouse
for being crowned king of the Molson Game Day Live Tweetup
this season.
The massive Oilers fan landed himself in the Loyalty Program
top 20 after attending all seven events during the 2013-14
campaign. It was truly outwit, outplay and outlast with all 20
finalists on-hand and a number of challenges before them,
including legendary Oilers Trivia, with Grant Fuhr and Marty
McSorley playing host, and grabbing as much Oilers gear as
possible in a limited time period. Holmes came out on top, but
he’ll tell you first-hand that all season long Molson Game Day
Live has been a thrill.
“The atmosphere each time has been awesome, especially
as a way to meet and connect with other Oilers fans, but the
finale at The Ranch has been phenomenal and easily the best
one yet,” said Holmes. “I’ve been to a couple games this year
live and obviously all of the Tweetup events and they really do
EDMONTONOILERS.COM
l
bring that same atmosphere each time. Molson Game Day Live
Tweetups are a great night out!”
Molson Game Day Live Tweetups give fans the opportunity to
experience all the excitement of a live Oilers game at Rexall
Place during select away games each season. Fans are joined
by Oilers in-game host, Corey Loranger, the Oilers Octane
and Oilers anthem singer Robert Clark recreating the fun. All
RSVPed Finale guests were granted an exclusive meet-andgreet opportunity with Oilers Alumni Fuhr and McSorley who
posed for photos, signed autographs and shared stories from
their playing days. Fans also received a Molson sampling and
complimentary dinner to enjoy during the away-game action
and a number of exclusive and autographed prizes were
doled out, including signed sticks, jerseys and one-of-a-kind
canvasses.
The Oilers and Molson want to thank everyone for coming out
and supporting Molson Game Day Live this past season and
we’re looking forward to seeing you again next year!

EDMONTON OILERS VS VANCOUVER CANUCKS
THE OILERS AND CANUCKS CLOSE OUT THE 2013-14 CAMPAIGN TONIGHT WITH THEIR FINAL PACIFIC DIVISION RIVALRY MATCH OF
THEIR FIVE-GAME SEASON SERIES. Vancouver was victorious in the first three meetings this season; however, the Oilers doubled
up the Canucks 4-2 at Rogers Arena in their last showdown on January 27. David Perron had a huge game that night, scoring a
hat-trick, while Nail Yakupov picked up a pair of assists.
OILERS TO WATCH
JORDAN EBERLE has recorded
points in eight of the last 10
Oilers games, with six goals and
eight assists during that span,
bringing his season totals up
to 27 goals and 64 points. He’ll
come up just shy of his 76 points
and 34 goals from two seasons
ago, but is currently enjoying
tremendous chemistry with
linemates Taylor Hall and Ryan
Nugent-Hopkins.
OSCAR KLEFBOM is now 15
games into his NHL career, and
Oilers Head Coach Dallas Eakins
has had nothing but praise
for the defenceman’s steady
development. The 20-year-old
Swede has chipped in with a goal
and two assists thus far, and has
logged between 16:38 and 21:57
time on ice over the course of the
last five games. Klefbom has also
yet to take a penalty.
CANUCKS TO WATCH
No Canucks player has found the
back of the net more times this
season than RYAN KESLER, and
the race isn’t even close. The
29-year-old centre is up to 24
goals on the season, with the next
closest teammate sitting at 17.
Nine of his 24 goals have come
with the man advantage, and
Kesler is now up to 392 points in
652 career regular season games,
all with Vancouver.
JASON GARRISON has been
Vancouver’s top scoring
defenceman this season, tallying
seven goals (four of them on the
powerplay) and 25 assists for 32
points, which, as of Thursday,
put him just two points shy of a
new career high. The 29-year-old
from nearby White Rock, B.C.,
spent his first four seasons
with the Florida Panthers before
signing with the Canucks.

EDMONTON OILERS 2013-14
Tuesday, October 1
Oilers vs.
Winnipeg Jets
It’s a historic night at
Rexall Place as the Oilers
host the Winnipeg Jets for
the first time since March
29, 1996. Luke Gazdic
scores his first Oilers goal
and first NHL goal, while
Boyd Gordon and Jesse
Joensuu also tally their
first goals with their new
team.
Thursday, October 17 Oilers @ New York Islanders
Taylor Hall etches his name in the Oilers record book, scoring twice
in eight seconds late in the first period, surpassing the franchise
mark for fastest two goals by a player. Wayne Gretzky scored two
goals nine seconds apart in 1981.
Monday, January 27
Oilers @
Vancouver Canucks
David Perron scores his
second career hat-trick
as the Oilers earn an
emotional 4-2 victory
over the rival Canucks
in Vancouver. Perron
steals the puck from Zack
Kassian and scores an
empty-netter to complete
the hat-trick with 69
seconds left in the game.
Thursday, December 5 Oilers vs. Colorado Avalanche
The Oilers offence explodes for eight goals against the visiting
Avalanche, resulting in an 8-2 victory for the home side, with
Taylor Hall tallying the fourth hat-trick of his career. The leftwinger also chips in with an assist for a four-point game.
Wednesday, January 29 Oilers vs. San Jose Sharks
Thursday, March 6 Oilers vs. New York Islanders
Newly acquired goalie Ben Scrivens provides the Oilers with a
performance for the ages, stopping all 59 shots he faces in a
3-0 shutout win over the Sharks. Scrivens breaks the franchise
record for saves in a game, and also sets a new NHL record for
saves in a regulation shutout.
EDMONTONOILERS.COM
Ryan Smyth scores his 126th powerplay goal in an Oilers uniform,
surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s 125 and tying him with Glenn
Anderson for the most in franchise history. Edmonton wins 3-2 in
overtime and, fittingly enough, The Great One is in attendance to
witness Smyth’s achievement.

A funny thing happens when
you tell kids they matter.
They believe you.
Thousands of kids drop out of high school every year. Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada are
committed to changing that. They provide a safe and supportive place where kids can develop
confidence and life skills. They offer programs like Rogers Raising the Grade to help kids
with their studies. The Club is a place where kids can drop in, so they’re less likely to drop out.

Luke Gazdic brings grit
and energy to Oil Country
When Luke Gazdic was claimed off waivers on September 29, 2013,
he was largely nabbed to fill a void, with the Oil in need of a tough
customer given Steve MacIntyre’s injury before the season began.
Little did everyone know that not only would the youngster fill a
void, he would also carve out his own identity and place on the
Oilers roster. From top to bottom, heads began to turn, an especially
coincidental gesture given Gazdic’s presence on the ice typically
has others’ heads on a swivel whenever the enforcer is nearby.

The thing is, in a hockey-hungry town like Edmonton, it’s not
just the management, coaches and players who are paying
special attention to Gazdic, but Oilers fans everywhere are
quickly latching onto #20, as the rookie left-winger has landed
some impressive blows and knocks on tough opponents during
his inaugural NHL campaign.
The product of Toronto, Ontario has racked up 83 penalty
minutes, two goals and two assists through his first 52 games
this season. Drafted by the Dallas Stars in the sixth round
(172nd overall) in the 2007 NHL Draft, he spent the past four
seasons in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Texas
Stars, also lacing up for stints with the Idaho Steelheads of
the ECHL. He was gearing up to be sent back down to the
Dallas farm team for a fifth consecutive season, in what would
seem like a career destined for the minors. That is, until his
phone rang.
“I went from the lowest of lows to the highest of highs after
getting sent down again, I didn’t think there was a chance
that anyone was going to pick me up,” said Gazdic. “Twentyfour hours later I was on a plane to Edmonton and the next day
I was playing in my first NHL game. It was absolutely crazy.”
It’s certainly been a wild ride for the rugged winger who
couldn’t have written the story of his first game in the National
Hockey League any better. He scored his first NHL goal off of his
first shot, just 14 seconds into his first shift, and to top it all
off, won his first fight, all captured on Hockey Night in Canada.
A product of the hot-bed of hockey, Gazdic grew up in North
Toronto playing his minor hockey with the North York Rangers
THIS IS OIL COUNTRY
l

of the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL) before spending
three strong seasons with the Erie Otters in the Ontario Hockey
League (OHL). Growing up he attended St. Michael’s College
School, a respected and prominent all-boys private school in
the city, where he donned the double blue from 2001 to 2006.
The storied school has pumped out more NHL players than any
other school, with 205 current and past NHL players having
worn a St. Mike’s hockey jersey. Gazdic is the most recent
St. Mike’s alum to enter the professional ranks, joining other
notables including: past-Oilers centreman Andrew Cogliano
(Anaheim), Tyler Seguin (Dallas), Jason Spezza (Ottawa),
Dominic Moore (NY Rangers), Cal Clutterbuck (NY Islanders),
Rich Clune (Nashville) and Brendan Smith (Detroit). It’s been
a long road to the show, but Luke quickly credits his close
family for the support he’s received along the way.
“I owe everything to my Mom and Dad. Ever since I was a kid,
I had a rink in my backyard and my Dad was always out there
making the ice for me and my two brothers, Ben and Mark, and
my sister, Gillian – because she’d be mad if I didn’t mention
her too,” added a laughing Gazdic.
As expected, there was plenty of sibling rivalry in the Gazdic
household.
“My older brother and I got into some pretty heated battles,
especially with our rink in the back,” said Gazdic. “My Dad
would be pulling us off the ice and would literally have to pull
us apart all the time. I grew up the whole way with my younger
one too so I always fed off them.”

THIS IS OIL COUNTRY
Like most Canadian kids, Gazdic always dreamed of being
a professional hockey player. While most remain dreamers,
Gazdic has taken matters into his own hands, never wavering
his dedication to his craft.
While he can’t take credit for his genetic makeup, standing
at a healthy 6-foot-3 and weighing in at 240 pounds, he can
take credit for the values and attitude he employs every day.
For Gazdic, his pillars of strength seem to not only be his
build and physical presence on the ice, but his virtues too.
He’ll never let himself take anything for granted and will even
admit he still gets butterflies.
“I’m always pretty nervous before a game. I try to stay calm
and remember that every day here is an opportunity for me
and tomorrow you could be gone. Every day I try to force our
coaches and management’s hand to keep me around,” said
Gazdic.
“I truly feel that it’s a privilege to play in this league. I have
to work hard every day to stay up here on an NHL roster. My
mindset every game, every practice and every day is the same;
I think about how it could potentially be my last game so I try
to give absolutely everything I have.”
It’s this quality attitude that has the coaching staff believing
that this kid is the real deal. Assistant Coach Steve Smith has
been working closely with the rookie and praises his honest
work ethic as he develops into a complete player.
“What’s been great about Luke is that he’s a student of the
game. He wants to learn. He comes to the rink every day
and works hard to become a better player,” said Smith.
“He’s improving every day and he’s become a guy the entire
coaching staff feels comfortable putting on the ice. We know
he’s become a responsible player.”
The rookie enforcer’s gritty style is suiting the Oil just fine and
Smith shares that Gazdic is looking to constantly improve by

working on his skating, puck-handling skills and defensive
zone structure. The coaching staff is hoping to deploy the
winger in shorthanded situations in the latter stages of the
season to test out his new finesse on the penalty kill as well.
He’s earned everything so far and Coach Smith cites that it’s
been that way since day one.
“When he involved himself in a couple of scraps right away
and stuck up for his teammates, he showed his teammates,
our coaches and management that he wanted to be part of
something here,” said Smith. “You can see that he’s starting
to reap the benefits from all the work he’s putting in.”
While Oil Country has quickly learned that Gazdic will always
be there when things get chippy or dicey on the ice, the rookie
acts as an important voice on the bench too.
“I just try to create energy. I like to see when guys are getting
tense and then I can step in and provide a voice to guide and
lead guys. Whether it’s with a big play, hit or just being vocal
on the bench or in the dressing room, my goal is to always
keep the team’s spirits high and positive.”
The power forward might make one presume that he’s a bit
of an intimidating foe, and delivering blows and punishing
opponents with his heavy fists might be all in a day’s work for
Gazdic, but the 24-year-old is as friendly as they come. Think
you know Luke Gazdic? Think again. The man himself will be
the first to point out he’s got a softer side under his brooding
exterior.
“I’m not nearly as mean off the ice as I am on the ice. Really,
I’m just a big teddy bear.”
While we can’t confirm this with Roald Dahl, we think the
famed author might have been writing about #20 in his
classic fable. You heard it here first, Oil Country: Luke Gazdic
is the Big Friendly Giant.

FACES OF OIL COUNTRY
DARWIN ASSMAN FORE THE OILERS
By Andrea Rutt
Like many, Season Seat Holder Darwin
Assman is a passionate hockey fan during
the winter months and an avid golfer in the
summer, so it only made sense to combine
his two loves into one unique item – a custom
Oilers golf cart.
“The special feature I enjoy the most is
the ghosting effect of the past and future
Oilers players. It has to be seen up close to
appreciate the detail that has gone into that
wrap on the cart.
“Being from Saskatchewan, my favourite
player is #14, Jordan Eberle, whose picture is
on the driver’s side and my second favourite,
#4, Taylor Hall, is on the passenger’s side.”
“I enjoy golfing in the summer and
discussed doing an Oilers golf cart with
Darren Schoonbaert from Ace of Carts Ltd.
in Saskatoon,” said Darwin. “I wanted
something original and very well staged to
promote the Oilers.”
Taking just over nine months to complete, almost every inch
of the cart is covered with orange and blue, from the logo
that leads the way on the front to the matching, specialorder bucket seats.
While the details are endless, his favourite part of the entire
project is the custom image that wraps around the bottom
panel. He enlisted the help of graphic design artist Bonnie
Ross who took Darwin’s ideas and created four layers of
images, placed one on top of the other. Players like the Great
One make a faded appearance, but his two favourite current
players steal the spotlight.
EDMONTONOILERS.COM
l
While the cart may not be suitable for the
430-kilometre trek from his hometown of
Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan to Rexall Place, Darwin one
day hopes to take his favourite players for a spin around the
course. And while he’s proud to show off his custom creation
to anyone who asks, he noted there’s still work to be done.
“In 2014, we will be making some more upgrades to the
sound system and adding some extra embroidery on the golf
club bag cover.”
Whether it’s a one-of-a-kind Oilers golf cart or an arena
made out of Lego, there’s no denying that when it comes to
fans in Oil Country, passion runs deep.

Conference semi-final appearances after upset wins
over the Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche. Joseph
had an impressive 14 regular-season shutouts and five
more goose-eggs in the post-season during his time in
Edmonton.
WHAT LED YOU TO BECOME A GOALTENDER?
I didn’t start until age 11. Someone in the town where I
lived was moving and came to the house and said, “Your
son doesn’t play hockey and he should think about using
our spot, we’ve already paid the tuition.” So I went and I
couldn’t skate so they put me in net. It was house league
and that’s how I became a goalie. I actually never wanted
to be a goalie, I wanted to be a goal scorer, but turns out I
got fairly good at it so I always say the position chose me.
WHAT DOES BEING KNOWN FOR YOUR UNIQUE
GOALIE MASK MEAN TO YOU?
AS WE JUST CELEBRATED THE 2014 WINTER
OLYMPICS, TELL US ABOUT YOUR OLYMPIC
ENDEAVOURS?
I ran with the nickname CuJo, with the Stephen King dog
from his novel on the top of my mask, and kept it the
same. I remember growing up, Tony Esposito, Ken Dryden,
Gerry Cheevers, these guys were known for not only being
great goalies but for their masks, so I wanted to keep my
artwork consistent. I see a lot of kids at rinks that have
the same design so it’s very thrilling.
It was great, I feel very fortunate to have represented my
country twice in the Olympics. One was in Nagano, Japan,
playing with Wayne Gretzky and that crew of guys. It was
pretty special to play with those guys who were heroes of
mine. And then winning gold in Utah with Mario Lemieux
and Joe Sakic and those great players, it’s obviously a
great highlight of anyone’s career. It was a tremendous
experience and tremendous time in my life.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORY WITH THE
OILERS?
It would definitely be the two playoff runs that we had,
upsetting Dallas and Colorado. Those were fun teams, we
were a young squad. Coming back 3-1 against Colorado
and winning that series in Colorado was quite the feat
and quite the accomplishment by the group of guys that
we had. And also knocking off Dallas in seven; everybody
still talks about the Dallas series, what great hockey
it was, and the entertainment value for the fans was
incredible. Those are very fond memories.

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO SINCE RETIRING?
I have three boys that play hockey (19, 17 and 12) so I’m
busy with that and making sure they’re doing the right
things as far as school. I’m also a brand ambassador for
different companies. I enjoy that because it gives me the
luxury of having time to watch my kids play hockey. I’m
also working on my golf game; I go south for a week every
month and work on lowering my handicap.

The Oilers Skills Competition presented by Rogers was a big hit for
both players and fans alike as Oil Country spent a Saturday afternoon
together at Rexall Place. Nevermind the on-ice skills, how about all
of the off-ice smiles?! Here’s a sampling of some of our great Oil

Close your eyes. I’ll let you wait until the
final seconds of the score clock run down
and the horn sounds, letting it be known that
intermission is upon us.
Are you ready now? Okay, close your eyes. Imagine your seat
expanding in width, a cushion being placed beneath you,
and when you go to put your drink down, there’s a cup holder
within arm’s length just waiting to hold your cold beverage
until your next bout of thirst. Perhaps you’re watching the Oilers
battle their rivals as you are now, or maybe you’re taking in the
sweet tunes of your favourite band.

What’s that? You’re looking for a more intimate setting to
host a few clients or a more relaxed space to take in the
action with your friends? Imagine a premium experience
in a luxury suite with world-class service and comfort.
Or, picture sitting with a group of four to six friends at
your own table, looking directly at the ice surface from
above the lower bowl. A server comes by and you place
your beverage order before perusing the mouth-watering
spread waiting for you in the buffet line.
Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) for Rogers Place had
been met, meaning Oil Country will start to see action on
the arena site as soon March 2014.
“We set out on this journey over six years ago because
Edmonton needed a new arena,” said Katz. “Rexall Place
has served our city and our team well for over 40 years,
but its time had come. The people of Edmonton deserved
a new and better experience and our team required a
modern facility that could sustain an NHL franchise for
the very, very long term.”
Sustainability was an important factor at the forefront
of Katz’ mind during the process, and as part of the
Lease Agreement, the state-of-the-art facility will house
the Oilers and Oil Kings for a minimum of 35 years. In
addition to hockey, Rogers Place will be a beacon for
international-calibre concerts and events.
While this may seem like nothing more than a happy
daydream, it will soon become a reality as Edmonton’s
new downtown arena, Rogers Place, has been given the
green light to begin construction.
On February 11, Oilers owner Daryl Katz and Mayor Don
Iveson took to City Hall to announce that the $480-million

“This is an exciting day for Edmonton as we move ahead
with a project that will help realize our vision of a more
vibrant downtown and ensures that the Edmonton Oilers
remain a vital part of our city for years to come,” said
Iveson. “The look of Rogers Place is bold and forwardlooking, just like Edmonton. As part of our downtown
vision, it will serve as a symbol of our city’s great future.”
And there’s no denying the future looks bright. Along with
the world-class entertainment it will bring to Oil Country,
the arena will play a key role in the transformation that
has already begun in the heart of our city.

“This plan included a series of catalysts and projects
that together will revitalize the core of our city and build
a town that is vibrant and sustainable, well-designed
and accessible,” said Iveson. “The downtown arena
and entertainment centre was one of those initiatives.
While it alone will not change our downtown, it is a
foundational part of that transformation.”
event, and access to a Loge Club at the end of the arena.
There will also be a number of other clubs and spaces for
guests to enjoy throughout their visit.
In addition to aesthetics and comfort, Rogers Place will
be the most technologically enabled sport facility in all
of North America when it opens its doors. Signing an
unprecedented 13-year telecommunications sponsorship
deal with the Oilers at the onset of the season, Rogers
Communications will leverage its extensive network and
multiplatform content investments to enhance fans’
experiences throughout the games.
While there’s no doubt that Rogers Place will be the hub
of the arena district, the deal also includes four other
integral components of the project: the community rink,
Winter Garden, LRT connection, and pedestrian pedway.
Set to open its doors in time for the 2016 NHL season,
Oilers fans will experience a sleek and modern design
based upon the iconic oil drop, with exterior siding made
to resemble snow drifts. It will become a landmark in the
city’s downtown, setting the tone for other infrastructure
that will follow.
These four dynamic spaces were designed with the
idea of accessibility at the forefront. Families will be
able to enjoy an afternoon of skating or an evening of
Grant MacEwan Griffins hockey at the community rink,
along with taking in Oilers practices. Downtown workers
looking for a vibrant space to meet for lunch or take an
indoor stroll will have year-round access to the Winter
Garden.
“It will be an iconic and beautiful building that, like
great hockey players, makes everything around it better,”
said Katz.
Once inside, fans will enjoy 18,641 seats for hockey
games and wide concourses with endless food and
beverage options to enjoy during intermissions. The
lower bowl will contain almost 2,000 more seats than
what currently exists at Rexall Place, with a minimum
seat width of 19 inches.
“There will be all kinds of space for people that want
to do something special,” said Oilers President & COO
Patrick LaForge. “We’re planning four or five different
clubs for entertaining, dining and watching hockey and
all the other things that will go on in the building. Some
of them will be small and intimate at 100, and some
of them large like the Loge area which will be around
1,200.”
As envisioned above, the Loge area is a relatively new
concept to arena options. Loge seating will allow groups
of four to six to purchase a table that includes access
to a buffet, beverage service throughout the game or
EDMONTONOILERS.COM
l
Rogers Place and its additional spaces will play a key
role in attracting private development that will make up
the arena district. Edmonton’s downtown core will start
to see a welcome boost of restaurants, retail spaces and
accommodations that will enliven the heart of our city.
There’s no doubt it’s an exciting time to be an Oilers
fan and resident of Oil Country. Whether you pictured
yourself at an Oilers game, seeing the biggest musical
acts or enjoying a pre-event meal with your friends,
Rogers Place will be buzzing in 2016.
