As Oil Country celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Oilers first Stanley Cup
Championship, the 1983-84 team is back in town to celebrate where the magic began.
In addition to sharing in a night of storytelling and reminiscing at Rexall Place, the
team will leave a legacy in the community, donating funds from the 1984 Stanley Cup
Reunion to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation specifically for the creation of a
new Pediatric Ambulatory Clinic.

Oil Country welcomes two new faces behind the Oilers bench this season
– Assistant Coaches Craig Ramsay and Rocky Thompson. In addition to playing over
1,000 NHL games, Ramsay brings over 40 years of NHL experience including time
served as bench boss in Buffalo (1986-87), Philadelphia (2000-01) and Atlanta (201011). Thompson joins the organization from the Oilers American Hockey League affiliate
in Oklahoma City.

The 21-year-old Oilers prospect kicked off his career
right here in Edmonton, coming on the scene in 2010
with the WHL’s Edmonton Oil Kings. Dubbed ‘LB’ by the
boisterous crowd at Rexall Place, he backstopped the
team to its first modern franchise history WHL title,
earning himself playoff MVP honours in his first full
season. He spent the majority of last year splitting his
time between the Bakersfield Condors (ECHL) and the
Oklahoma City Barons (AHL) after being acquired from
the Calgary Flames on November 8, 2013.

Who encouraged you to play hockey?
I always wanted to play, but never got
the chance until I moved from the
Mainland. I always loved Dan Cloutier
from the Canucks and whenever we
played road hockey outside,
I was always the goalie.
Biggest challenges along
the way in minor hockey?
I was too naïve as a kid to really
think about what was challenging;
I just had fun. I was always kind of
highly touted in minor hockey and just
trying to uphold that title was always the
toughest thing mentally.
Greatest minor hockey moment?
In Peewee, we went to Provincials with my
Cloverdale team and back then we were
never considered a competitive team,
so making it to Provincials was
pretty cool.
Greatest accomplishment
in hockey?
So far, being called up
to the NHL.
Greatest disappointment
along the way?
Getting to the Memorial Cup in
2011-12 and the performance that
I put forward in that tournament.
Most influential person in your hockey
career when you were growing up?
My parents; they sacrificed so much. Also all of
the goalie coaches I’ve worked with. Just getting
a lot of different opinions is huge during your
development, especially at a young age because
you absorb things like a sponge.
What area have you been working on
to get to the next level?
Calming down my game. I take pride
in my mobility and athleticism, but
I used to over-move and now I’m
working on being more
efficient in the crease.
What excites you
about the possibility of
playing for the Oilers?
It’s just a dream come true.
There’s not really one specific thing you
can really say. It’s just being in the NHL in
general and having that lifestyle and ending
up being that person you looked up
to throughout your whole childhood.
It’s probably the greatest
thing you can do.

eneral Manager Craig MacTavish brought some fresh oil to the
roster during the off-season, acquiring defencemen Nikita Nikitin,
Mark Fayne and Keith Aulie, as well as forwards Benoit Pouliot and
Teddy Purcell, via trades and free agency.

The Oilers acquired Nikitin from Columbus on June 25 prior to the NHL
Draft, and then on June 29 they dealt Sam Gagner to Tampa Bay in
exchange for Purcell. Two days later on Canada Day, the first day of
free agency, they signed Fayne to a four-year deal, Aulie to a oneyear contract and Pouliot to a five-year deal.
Once the dust had settled on a busy week of transactions for
Oilers management, MacTavish reflected on the acquisitions
and noted a common theme among conversations with
all five players. They recognize the huge potential of the
young squad and look forward to adding that desired
veteran presence in the lineup.
“I think it was as compelling of a story for them
as it is for me to tell,” the GM said of his sales
pitch. “The situation is very much improving
in spite of the fact that the results have
lagged, certainly last year. It was a
compelling enough situation that at
the end of the day we were able to
quickly react to the players. I think
they’re all going to have a great impact
on our team.”
Pouliot was a highly-touted draft pick
in 2005, ultimately getting selected fourth
overall by the Minnesota Wild. Now 28 years
old, the left-winger has 371 NHL games under his
belt, scoring 76 goals and 160 points thus far. The
6-foot-3 forward has also played 54 playoff games
and scored 14 post-season points, including five goals
and five assists during the New York Rangers’ run to the
Stanley Cup Final this past June.
“Benoit Pouliot was maybe our most important add,” MacTavish
said. “We’ve talked about size, we’ve talked about increasing our
competitiveness and he’s a guy that tracks the puck really well.
He’s a great skater and we really felt as a group that we needed to
add that element. He’s added that element.”

Pouliot, who spent parts of two seasons in Montreal between
2009 and 2011, said he is excited to play in a Canadian
market again and embrace Oil Country’s passionate fans.
“The way the fans see the game and the way they know the
game more and they are always loyal to you,” he said. “You
go around town, they know who you are and they talk to you
about hockey. It’s fun. It pumps you up every night even more
and you want to play in front of those kinds of fans.”
Purcell brings many of the same attributes to the Oilers
lineup as Pouliot. At 6-foot-3, he’s another sizeable winger,
and the 29-year-old has played 401 NHL games thus far in
his career. He’s more than capable of contributing offensively
as well; with the Kings and Lightning, Purcell scored 75 goals
and 228 points. He also has 22 playoff games under his belt
with 18 points, 17 of them coming during Tampa’s 2011 postseason charge.
“Teddy Purcell is a guy that I’ve liked for quite some time,”
MacTavish said. “He had an incredible playoff run with
Tampa Bay a few years ago. He’s got size, he’s got skill, he
can move the puck and I think he’s going to fit in very well
with the group we have.”

paid from battling through
several challenging seasons.
“They said how good the fans are, how patient they’ve been
and they’re just waiting for us to get back in the playoffs
and be successful again,” Purcell said. “It’s going to be
really exciting. There’s going to be a lot of pressure, but as an
athlete you want that pressure.”
The common theme of size continues with the addition of
Fayne to the Oilers blueline. The 27-year-old is 6-foot-3 and
215 pounds, spending the past four seasons with the New
Jersey Devils, who he was drafted by in the fifth round in
2005. Fayne has 48 points and a +7 rating in 242 career
games, adding 24 playoff games to his resumé with the
Devils in 2012.
“With Mark Fayne, it brings us a guy that really makes
simple plays with the puck but makes them highly effective,”

MacTavish said. “He’s a very good defender. I
think he fits into that role.”
As a puck-mover and stay-at-home defenceman,
Fayne is looking forward to feeding the team’s
talented group of forwards and helping the team
generate its offensive attack.
“I definitely plan on just trying to get them the puck, just
bringing consistency to the backend,” Fayne said. “The team
has such fire-power up front that my job is just to get them
the puck and let them do their job.”

has split time with Toronto and Tampa’s NHL and AHL clubs
the past four seasons. Aulie has recorded 13 career NHL
points and 130 PIM.
Similar to Fayne, Russian rearguard Nikitin has accumulated
several seasons of NHL experience, starting his career with
the St. Louis Blues (who drafted him in the fifth round in
2004) before playing with Columbus the past three seasons.
The 28-year-old has put up 65 points and a +2 rating in 206
career games, earning five games of playoff experience with
the Blue Jackets this past spring.
“It’s a young group that desperately wants to win,” Aulie said
of the Oilers. “Just from playing against them in the past,
they’re hard working. It’s going to be exciting. I think there’s
a lot of work to be done. We just want to come in and make a
positive impact and help this team out because it’s exciting
to be part of a team that’s on an upswing. We understand
how much pride this city has in the team and we can’t wait to
make a positive impact.”
“I see him playing in a top-four role,” said Oilers Senior VP
of Hockey Operations Scott Howson, who previously served as
GM with the Blue Jackets. “He’ll play a little bit of powerplay,
probably second unit. He’s got a great shot and he’ll kill
penalties. He can play really anywhere in your 1-6 spots. We’ll
probably use him in 1-4, or he’ll be given that opportunity
initially.”
Aulie is the less-experienced of the five Oilers off-season
acquisitions, with 136 NHL games on his resumé, but the
25-year-old brings tremendous size and potential. Drafted in

The Oilers are certainly a bigger, more experienced group
thanks to the off-season acquisitions, and now it’s time to
mix those players in with the returning core to see if they can
make a winning combination.
“The thing that sticks out to me is the size that we’ve added,
especially on the back end,” Jordan Eberle said. “Those guys
are all 6-foot-3 and above and obviously there’s some bigger
skilled guys up front. Especially with the additions, I think you
have no reason not to go into the season with positivity.”

Central on August 8.

Inner City High School on June 25 to celebrate the students’
accomplishments from the past year and the 11 graduates
saying farewell.
Oilers Captain Andrew Ference presented jerseys to the world’s
top triathletes on August 27 as part of the ITU World Triathlon
Grand Finale held in Edmonton. Ference and Head Coach
Dallas Eakins also participated in the Sprint Relay with friend
and Olympian Simon Whitfield.

MARK FAYNE
One of the newest faces in Oil Country signed on with the club as a free agent
this past off-season. Playing the last four years with the New Jersey Devils, the
blueliner helped the Devils reach the 2012 Stanley Cup Final before being defeated
by the LA Kings. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound defenceman has registered 13-35-48 and
99 penalty minutes in 242 NHL games.
Born and raised in Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts , I’m the
youngest of two siblings (I have one older sister) . When I was a
little kid, all I wanted to be when I grew up was a coast guard , but after I
laced up with the Cape Cod Canal Youth Cobras in Cape Cod
when I was seven , I knew I wanted to be a hockey player. Back then, my
favourite part of playing was when we’d play pond hockey
and I grew up idolizing Ray Bourque because he was
my father’s favourite player .
My favourite high school coaches were Rob Griffin
and Brian Day because they were the
ones that gave me the tools I needed
to get to college and beyond . My most
memorable hockey moment was beating the
Rangers in OT in Game 6 of the
Eastern Conference Final when I
played for the New Jersey Devils.
If I could go back and give myself one piece
of advice it would be to give your
parents more credit for all of
the sacrifices they make for
your hockey career .
On game days, my usual breakfast is an egg white, ham and tomato omelette and my special routine is I get
dressed the same way (from right to left) . My favourite part of game day is puck drop and the last thing I
think about before I step on the ice is I just try to clear my head .
My first impression of Oil Country was it’s a great fan base . During the off-season, I was working on a quicker shot
and quicker feet and I look forward to making a run for the playoffs with the team this year .

HOCKEY FIGHTS CANCER ONLINE CHARITY AUCTION LAUNCHES
Oilers Foundation and fans help “fight a stronger fight” for cancer patients

AS THE OILERS BATTLED THE CAROLINA HURRICANES ON FRIDAY,
OCTOBER 24, ANOTHER BATTLE WAS HAPPENING OFF THE ICE –
the fight against cancer. October marks Hockey Fights Cancer
Month across the National Hockey League and the Edmonton
Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF) hosted their annual in-game
fundraiser, selling limited-edition Oilers mittens at the game.
In addition to the Hockey Fights Cancer fundraiser, two very special
guests helped drop the puck, Avena, 8, and Karsten, 15, from Kids
with Cancer Society.
“It is so important for fans to support the Hockey Fights Cancer
initiative because cancer is a disease that is in everyone’s ‘rink’,”
said Avena’s mom, Jody Coughlan. “Avena has played hockey for
the last five years. On December 21, 2013 she was on the ice for
an early morning hockey practice and in the afternoon of that
same day, she was diagnosed with leukemia. Life as you know it
can change in a second and it can happen to anyone at any time.
These kids are fighting for their lives and with fan support, we can
fight a stronger fight.”
Avena and Karsten are just two of the many children who will
benefit from both the Hockey Fights Cancer in-game initiative and
its corresponding online charity auction, which launched today.
Net proceeds from the sale of mittens and the online auction will
be directed to the Kids with Cancer Society’s ‘Brainworks’ program
and the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation.
“The EOCF has partnered with Kids with Cancer Society to
support the Brainworks program as chemotherapy and radiation

can cause learning difficulties for children,” said Val Figliuzzi,
Executive Director, Kids with Cancer Society. “Brainworks teams
up with children and families to help them overcome learning
obstacles and develop coping skills to deal with problems relating
to treatment.”
Established in 1979, the Kids with Cancer Society supports children
diagnosed with cancer in the Northern Alberta Region, providing
emotional, educational and clinical support and services from the
time of diagnosis through to the recovery stages.
“It is extremely important that these children and their families
receive nurturing support to help them address the learning
difficulties connected with cancer treatment before these issues
can evolve into life-altering challenges,” said Natalie Minckler,
Executive Director, EOCF. “Through Hockey Fights Cancer, our
strong community here in Oil Country will directly impact the lives
of children with cancer and their families in a very positive way.”
Fans have the opportunity to bid on over 80 items, including a
complete set of autographed Oilers game-worn jerseys from their
win against Tampa Bay on October 20, autographed Taylor Hall,
Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins game-worn helmets and
a limited edition 1984 Edmonton Oilers Stanley Cup Champions
team-signed canvas.
Fans can help support the fight against cancer and make a
difference for kids like Avena and Karsten by placing a bid at
oilersfoundation.ca. The auction will be open until November 12,
2014.

front of six Montreal pucks on the
night. The 27-year-old, who was
also signed as a free agent on
July 1, had 18:10 TOI, an assist
and a +1 rating in the win,
bumping him up to three points
on the season.
PREDATORS TO WATCH
Despite being just 26 games
into his NHL career, centreman
FILIP FORSBERG is leading
the Predators in scoring so far
this season with one goal and
six assists in eight games.
The 20-year-old Swede was
Nashville’s first-round (11th
overall) selection at the 2012
NHL Draft, spending the bulk
of the 2013-14 season with
their AHL squad, the Norfolk
Admirals, with whom he scored
34 points in 47 games.
Defenceman SHEA WEBER
has been his usual steady
self on the Predators back
end, consistently logging 25+
minutes per game, as well as
contributing three goals and
an assist with a +5 rating to
the scoresheet. The 29-year-old
is embarking on his 10th NHL
season, serving as team captain
and anchoring the Nashville
blueline. Weber has 351 points
in 615 games, as well as a pair
of Olympic gold medals.

THE OILERS CLOSE OUT THEIR SEASON-LONG SEVEN-GAME HOMESTAND AGAINST A
FAMILIAR OPPONENT, the Pacific Division rival Vancouver Canucks, on Saturday night
at Rexall Place. Including a pair of pre-season tilts, the Oilers and Canucks squared
off four times during the month of October. Vancouver was victorious in both previous
regular season games, winning 5-4 in a shootout on home ice on October 11 and 2-0 at
Rexall Place on October 17. The familiar foes play once more in Edmonton on November
19 before finishing their season series in Vancouver on April 11. Saturday’s game will be
broadcast at 8pm MDT on CBC and the Oilers Radio Network.
CANUCKS TO WATCH
Right-winger RADIM VRBATA has been the
benefactor of playing alongside the Sedin
twins this season, scoring five goals and
10 points in eight games, as the Canucks
top line has accumulated 31 total points.
Two of the 33-year-old’s team-leading
five goals have come on the powerplay, as
Vrbata settles in with his new squad after
spending the previous five seasons with
the Coyotes. The Czech vet has played 800
career regular season games, picking up
220 goals and 474 points.
Alongside Vrbata, goaltender RYAN MILLER
has been an impactful addition to the
Canucks roster this season, winning five of
the six games he’s started with a 2.58 GAA
and .906 save percentage. The 34-year-old,
three-time U.S. Olympian spent his first 11
seasons back-stopping the Buffalo Sabres
before he was dealt to the St. Louis Blues
at last season’s trade deadline. Vancouver
then landed the veteran, free agent puckstopper on July 1.

hirty years later, there still is an amazing sense of pride
and fond memories, especially when you look up to the
rafters at Rexall Place. The retired number banners
feature not only some of the greatest hockey names of all
time – Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, Grant Fuhr,
Paul Coffey, Glenn Anderson and Al Hamilton – but with the
exception of the latter, they also represent six Oilers legends
who played on arguably the greatest team of all time; the
1983-84 Edmonton Oilers.
Having only joined the NHL four years prior, the young team,
both in status and age, were still known around the League
as the new kids on the block. They had made great strides the
season before making it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals,
but came up short to the great New York Islanders, being
swept in four games. They learned a lot from that experience
and came out prepared to take their game to another level the
following season. It didn’t take long to set the season ablaze,
winning 19 of their first 23 games; the Oilers set the bar early
and never looked back.
Finishing the regular season with a 57-18-5 record, they
began their Cup run with a dominant sweep of the Winnipeg
Jets. The next round proved a little more grueling, however,
as they faced their arch-rival Calgary Flames in the division
final. Sitting with a 3-1 series lead and heading back to a
home-ice advantage, the team and fans alike thought the
series was in the bag. But instead, Calgary fought their way
back with two consecutive one-goal wins, forcing Game 7. Not
about to let their hard work and determination go to waste,
Edmonton returned in full-force and sent the Flames packing
with a 7-4 decision.

when you think about it; being on the ice and watching
the clock count down and realizing you’re a Stanley Cup
Champion, it’s a pretty incredible memory.”
The Oilers had just won their first-ever Stanley Cup, ending
the Islanders dynasty and, unbeknownst to them, starting
their very own. In addition to taking home the coveted
hardware, the team set a League record for the third season
in a row with 446 goals – 87 of those coming from The Great
One. They also set franchise records for wins (59) and points
(119).
“It was one of the most exciting days of my broadcast career,”
said former Oilers radio play-by-play voice Rod Phillips. “It
was fabulous for the kids on the hockey team, it was great
for the organization, it was great for the city, it was great for
the NHL and it was just an absolutely fabulous run. We didn’t
know at the time that it would be the first of five, we didn’t
even think about that at the time.”

“Any great fighter, any great boxer had someone who made
him better,” said Mark Messier. “I think Calgary forced us to
be better. I don’t think we would have become the team that
we did without them.”
With the Flames headed back south, Edmonton regained their
stamina and rolled through their series against Minnesota.
For the second time in their playoff run, the Oilers swept their
opponent, this time the North Stars, in four games and found
themselves once again head-to-head with the mighty New
York Islanders.
The Oilers knew they were up against tough competition in the
Final, a rematch against the dynamic and reputable Islanders,
one of the great hockey dynasties themselves, coming off an
amazing four straight Stanley Cup winning seasons. But
rather than being intimidated, they used the pressure and
their gained experience from the year before as motivation.
“That team and those series against the Islanders taught us
a lot of lessons about courage and resiliency, and having the
will to win,” said Messier. “They made us better, there’s no
question about it.”
And better they were.
After facing only one loss in their first four games, the Oilers
found themselves back at Northlands Coliseum (now Rexall
Place) heading into Game 5. Up by two with 13 seconds left
on the clock, Dave Lumley scored on an empty net and the
crowd erupted.
“When Lummer scored that empty net goal, we were finally
able to exhale and realize that a dream-come-true was about

Thirty years and five Cups later, we can fully appreciate the
1983-84 team and what their win meant for the Oilers and
the fans of Oil Country. And just like any 30th anniversary
should be celebrated, the team returned to where it all began
for a 1984 Stanley Cup Reunion at Rexall Place on October 10.
“We started talking about doing something really special and
bringing this team that won the first Stanley Cup in Edmonton
back to Alberta to reminisce and selfishly have some fun
together,” said Oilers legend Wayne Gretzky. “A lot of players
met a lot of great friends in Edmonton over the years and
maybe haven’t seen people for a long time. Just as important
is to be able to raise money for a great cause.”
In addition to sharing an unforgettable evening of storytelling and reminiscing, the players will leave a legacy in the
community that whole-heartedly embraced and supported
them. Net proceeds from the 1984 Stanley Cup Reunion will

be directed to the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation
in support of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation,
specifically for the creation of a new Pediatric Ambulatory
Clinic.
“It was important for all of us involved that we create a
charitable legacy in the community,” said Kevin Lowe, Oilers
Entertainment Group Vice-Chairman and former Oilers
defenceman from 1979-1990. “I think that was Wayne’s
idea that we wanted to leave a legacy in honour of the ’84
team. There is no better place and no better partner than the
Stollery.”
While it’s been 30 years since the Oilers took home their first
Stanley Cup, the magic of that year will forever live on in the
hearts of the team, the fans, and now the children and their
families at the Stollery.
A fitting legacy indeed.

W
hether you’ve driven down 104 Avenue or just checked
out the Live View cameras on RogersPlace.com,
you will have noticed a lot of action happening in
the heart of Edmonton’s downtown. To date, the majority of
Rogers Place construction work has focused on digging down
and laying the foundation for the 1,110,900 sq. foot arena,
community rink, underground parking garage, LRT link and
Winter Garden. But with the second phase of construction
underway, fans will start to see things looking up for Rogers
Place – literally – as steel is erected, the structural concrete
is poured and the arena begins to take shape.
Rogers Place will also anchor the Edmonton Arena District,
a mixed-use district spanning over 22 acres that will help
revitalize and invigorate life in Edmonton’s downtown core.
The district will feature a variety of retail options, two office
towers, a four-star hotel and residence opportunities, with
more announcements and amenities to come.
There’s no denying it’s an exciting time on the Rogers Place
site and we suggest the next time you pass the 104 Street
and 104 Avenue area, or when you check out the Live View
cameras on RogersPlace.com, don’t forget to look up!
By the numbers, over 15,000 pieces of steel will make their
way onto the site this fall and winter, amounting to 9,000
tonnes. In addition, approximately 24,000 m3 of structural
concrete will be poured.
“As the steel is erected, people will be able to see the various
levels of the building begin to take shape. The ice will be at
pretty much street level,” said Mike Staines, Construction
Manager, PCL Construction Management Inc. “It’s an exciting
phase of construction now that the building is starting to
extend above ground level and throughout this next year the
site will change dramatically.”
Slated to open its doors in time for the 2016 NHL season, the
overall design of the arena will feature sleek and dramatic
exterior architecture with a roofline that resembles the iconic
oil drop. Stainless steel siding will round out the design,
evoking the dynamic shapes of drifting snow, signature
to Edmonton as a great winter city. Inside the 819,200 sq.
foot arena, Rogers Place will seat 18,641 for hockey games
and 20,734 for concerts and other events. Seating options
will range from a large lower bowl, containing 9,000 seats
compared to the current 6,000 in Rexall Place, to the newest
in premium seating options, loge seats.
Other amenities fans can look forward to include generous
concourses, widely varied food and beverage options, a fullservice restaurant, on-street media and production studios,
and the largest high-definition scoreboard in the NHL or NBA.

IT’S BEEN A SHORT BUT BUSY SUMMER FOR THE
EDMONTON OIL KINGS.
Less than 12 weeks passed between the Memorial Cup
Champions returning home and celebrating Edmonton’s first
Memorial Cup in 48 years and the beginning of training camp,
and in that time plenty occurred to keep the Oil Kings busy.
As many as 19 players from the 2013-14 championship team
could return to this year’s Oil Kings, highlighted by leading
goal-scorer Curtis Lazar, Memorial Cup MVP Edgars Kulda and
WHL Goalie of the Year runner-up Tristan Jarry.
The ‘Other Oil in Town’ brought the Memorial and Ed
Chynoweth Cups to over 50 community events in Edmonton,
Vermilion, Fort McMurray and Calgary this summer, visiting
schools, seniors, veterans, summer camps and everything in
between. Half the team returned to Edmonton as the Oil Kings,
alongside Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI),
were named the Grand Marshals of the 2014 K-Days Parade,
leading the parade through the streets of downtown with the
trophies perched atop light armoured vehicles supplied by
PPCLI.

Oil Kings joined them at NHL training camps this fall.
Up front, the likes of Tyler Robertson, Lane Bauer and Brandon
Ralph, all entering their 18-year-old seasons, will look to step
into the scoring void left by the loss of Henrik Samuelsson,
Mitch Moroz and Reid Petryk. Additionally, 17-year-old
rookies like Garan Magnes, Brayden Brown and Andrew
Koep, who all got a taste of the WHL last season, will look
to step into roles in their true rookie years.
On the back end, the Oil Kings will return with six defenders
from the 2013-14 team led by Mayo, Irving and 20-yearolds Ashton Sautner and Blake Orban, giving the Oil Kings,
the best defensive team in the WHL last season, a strong
supporting unit in front of Jarry.

hile the club stays consistent with Head Coach Dallas Eakins and
Associate Coach Keith Acton at the helm, they also added Craig
Ramsay and Rocky Thompson as assistant coaches during the offseason, giving them two more teaching assets for their players.

Ramsay, 63, has over 40 years of NHL experience as a player
and a coach. Thompson, 37, comes to the Oilers from their
American Hockey League affiliate in Oklahoma City. Aside
from both being great teachers, the new faces have a passion
for the game and the desire to keep the fun in hockey.
As a younger coach, closer to the ages of the Oilers young
stars, and having worked with some of the players already
in Oklahoma City, Thompson bridges the age and experience
gap between the roster and the coaches.
“He’s that bridge between the players’ ages and myself and
the rest of our staff,” said Head Coach Dallas Eakins.
“The reason you played the game initially was because it was
fun and the reason to stay in it is to have fun,” said Ramsay.
“The most important thing for me was to go to an organization
that understands the value of fun, whether it’s in practice,
games or after games. It’s understanding that if you’re in this
together and you’re a part of something then it’s fun.”
Thompson will assist in pre-scouting opponents and will be
Eakins’ eye -in-the-sky when it comes to in-game systems
and player adjustments. It’s a role he’s very familiar with from
his time in the AHL. But according to Eakins, Thompson’s
most important duties involve teaching in practice and locker
room settings.
Thompson is right there with Ramsay.
“His most important role is going to be on a day-to-day basis
with prepping and preparing our players to go out there and
play.”
“I enjoy every day at the rink as any coach would tell you,”
said Thompson. “It’s an amazing feeling. I am a guy who likes
to have fun. I can be very serious obviously, but I always have
a smile on my face.”
Fun aside, the Oilers mean business. The team is hoping to
make major strides this season and it will fall on the coaching
staff to pull the players together, making sure everyone is
marching in the same direction. Thompson is a key piece in
helping that vision come to fruition.

“hunger to teach.”
“I know what I am talking about and I can relay messages
from coaches to players,” said Thompson. “I have great
relationships with guys who are currently on the team. We
have had a lot of those guys play with us in Oklahoma City
and I have an advantage that we built a relationship down

there and we’ve had a winning culture down there. I hope to
continue that relationship.”
Thompson was drafted in the third round of the 1995 NHL
Draft by the Calgary Flames. He played 25 NHL games in his
career for the Flames and the Florida Panthers. He spent the
majority of his career in the AHL, before moving on to become
an assistant coach with the WHL’s Edmonton Oil Kings and
then the AHL’s Oklahoma City Barons.
While Thompson is the bridge between the players and the
rest of the staff, Ramsay is the more experienced teacher with
a modern touch.
“I think that’s why he’s so well-respected,” Eakins said. “He’s
up-to-date. He’s a sought-after coach and when we got into
the talks, the thing that really struck me with him was how
aggressive he likes to see the game played. That is something
that we want to take another step at. It fits right in with my
philosophy and the way we’re going. A lot of times when you
pick up a much older coach, it’s that same-old defensive way
of playing and that’s not the case with Craig. Craig wants to
play an extremely aggressive game, an exciting game.”
Buffalo originally drafted Ramsay in the second round in
1971 and he played over 1,000 NHL games in his career, all
with the Sabres. He went on to coach for the Sabres, Panthers,
Senators, Flyers, Lightning, Bruins and Thrashers, serving as
bench boss in Buffalo (1986-87), Philadelphia (2000-01) and
Atlanta (2010-11).
Ramsay will take the reins of the Oilers defence this season
and collaborate with Eakins and Acton on special teams.
“His teaching abilities are incredible. That’s something with
our group that we greatly need. His dealings with the players
are very personal, a lot of one-on-one interaction which I
think is extremely important,” Eakins said.
Ramsay’s aggressive philosophy fits perfectly with what
Eakins wants to see from the defence this season.
“While we need to teach players, defencemen especially, how
to play well in their own end, having good sticks and getting
body position, it’s also about getting back to the puck fast,
using your partner and the first play up, you’re following up,”
Ramsay said. “That means you’ve got a better gap and you’re
having fun in the game. You’re not just passing it up and
watching people play. You’re part of the whole concept of
getting up and trying to score a goal. You have to follow up. It
puts a lot more pressure on the players.”

Commitment Runs Deep
“It’s a more difficult game to play because you’ve got to skate
and work, but in the long run it’s a heck of a lot more fun.
It’s fun for them, it’s fun for the coaching staff, I think it’s
fun for the fans when they see their team trying to get up-ice
pressure and trying to be involved in that way. The players are
going to find out that Dallas, myself and Keith are going to
push the players to be in great shape but most importantly to
figure out the game and to understand the game.”
With the offensive talent on the Oilers roster, the coaching
staff will place a focus on teaching those skilled players
how to play defence the right way, and in doing so, hopefully
improvements will be made in the possession game. Their
philosophy: The better you play defence, the more you have
the puck.
“That’s the concept we want to have as an organization,”
Ramsay said. “We want to take these kids to where they’re
great offensive young talent and you’ve got to teach them
how to play defence and the importance of understanding the
defensive side of the game.
“You can still play with an offensive mindset once you
understand that if you’re good without the puck, you have it
more. You get it back faster and you get to go up ice more.
The key issue for young people is to get them to understand to
pay the price without the puck and that means you have a lot
more fun playing with it.”
Thompson also buys into that mentality, having learned
it as a player himself. It’s something he also believes he
specializes in as a coach.
“There are fundamental skills that sometimes great players
don’t always have in their game because they never really
needed it, like playing without the puck,” Thompson said.

“That was a strength of my game because I wasn’t the
greatest player with the puck. That was always a weakness
so I tried to master the game and how to play it without the
puck. That’s how I know every trick of the trade because my
feet weren’t the best and I had to know little tricks in order to
help make my game better.”
Both of the new assistants believe they can come together
with the rest of the staff and formulate a successful plan for
the season.
“We’re going to figure it out,” Ramsay said. “It’s not like it’s
just me and I’m just excited to go in there and throw out some
of my ideas. We’ll work hard to find a system that we believe
is going to work for the players and work for everyone to make
it a little bit better.”
With a staff fully committed to improving the product on the
ice, Eakins puts that same challenge on the players.
“I did challenge the players to make themselves better, to
think how they can make their teammates better, and I let
them know that I would do the same,” Eakins said. “We
have a staff that is fully on board, we have all of the bases
covered, our strength coaches have done an excellent job
this summer, our therapists have done an excellent job and
we’re ready to move forward. We need to get into it now and
we’ve got to make sure we are providing our players with the
right messages, and then it is up to our players to accept the
coaching and execute it.”
The goal for the Oilers this season is significant improvement
on the ice and winning more hockey games. There may be two
new faces on the Oilers coaching staff, but that goal remains
unchanged.
