David Perron was drafted by St. Louis 26th overall in 2007. The Sherbrooke, Quebec native finds
himself in a new role as an offensive catalyst for the Edmonton Oilers.
The 25-year-old is relishing the opportunity to
contribute to a new team and a new city.

St. Louis when his phone began to buzz.
“I think before, you start on one team and they give you
a chance to play in the best league in the world and
you’re so grateful for that,” said Perron. “Until you get
that phone call… you’re almost like, it’d be nice.”
“I saw ‘Doug Armstrong’ (Blues President of Hockey
Operations and General Manager) on my phone as it
was lying on the table. I knew something was going on.
I just had a different feeling that time. I had heard my
name being thrown around a little bit over the last two
weeks before that. I kind of had a feeling that’s what
it was and I got up right away. I told them, ‘I think I’m
traded’.
Plans changed for the winger as he received the call on
July 10, 2013 that he had been traded to the Edmonton
Oilers.
“Early on, it felt really weird to talk to another team.
They were really excited to get me. I was just kind of
sitting there, not sure what was going on for a little
bit.”
“They thought I was joking. By the time I talked
to Armstrong, he told me they traded my rights to
Edmonton. Then five minutes later, Kevin Lowe and
Craig MacTavish called me.”
Perron was filming a fantasy hockey preview show
in Montreal when he got the phone call that would
change his career. They were previewing the teams in

second-round draft pick to acquire Perron. It was a
trade that would pay immediate dividends to the Oilers.
“We’ve talked about David before,” said Oilers Head
Coach Dallas Eakins. “I saw this kid when he was in
junior. I kept an eye on him and then to get him, he’s
turned into a great leader in our dressing room.”
Through the start of the season, Perron has shown
high-offensive capabilities and the flexibility to play in
multiple roles for the Oilers.
“Every year I was trying to do that. No matter what
happens this year, I’m going to have the same mentality
next year and the year after. The biggest thing is going
from game-to-game,” said Perron. “I think something
I’ve learned throughout my career is when you have a
good game, you have to try to turn the page as soon as
possible because if you are still on that game, the next
day you won’t play as well.”

“For me, he’s one of these guys I can just move
anywhere. I can put him on the left side, I can put him
on the right side, I can put him in a checking role, I
can put him on the point on the power play if I have
to and he can play centre a little bit,” said Eakins.
“He’s a utility guy and these utility guys normally don’t
have hands like that or are that dangerous. He’s off to
a great start and that was a great player to acquire
by Craig. It’s an excellent player to bring into our
organization because we need that.”
Posting heavy offensive numbers has always been
something that Perron has strived to achieve. And
to start the season, Perron has been successful at
finding the back of the net putting him at the top of the
leaderboard with the Oilers.
“I just find the opportunities on the ice and I’m playing
in really good situations. I’m up front on the power play
right now with Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Ryan NugentHopkins or Nail Yakupov or whoever it may be. There’s
obviously a lot of skill and talent level. I’m just trying to
do my part. If I see something is missing in a game like
guys not finishing checks, I’m trying to set the example
by doing it. Hopefully it works.”
Perron has brought with him a gritty style of play that
the Oilers are most impressed with.
“I think we all enjoy the goals that he’s scoring, and
he’s in the fight every night,” said Eakins. “That’s the
first thing for me. Certain guys are going to get their
goals, some guys aren’t, but showing your teammates,
your crowd and your organization that you’re willing to
compete like that every night, that’s where it starts.
He’s been a real breath of fresh air.”
The Oilers new weapon plays hard to the whistle and
can get under his opponents’ skin.

Upon arrival to Edmonton, Perron learned quickly that
the tradition of the Oilers organization was a rich one.
“I’m really excited,” he said. “It’s not waiting, it’s now.
We have to have the mentality that we want to be that
right now, for it to happen in two years. We have to work
for it. If we don’t, we’ll be in the same spot in two years.
That’s the potential. It could be even sooner.”
“I’d been around this rink a little bit, playing on the
other side. But when you go in the dressing room and
as soon as you see the five Stanley Cups and there’s
another spot for one waiting, it’s almost like your
mindset is set right away when you walk in the room.
You see that’s the goal for every organization, but the
history behind this club is pretty special.”
“He is a guy that you want to rub off on the rest of the
group,” Eakins said. “I know that the group is taking
notes because you hear it on the bench when he’s on
the ice, the things that he’s doing.”
Following a Hockey Night in Canada game earlier in the
season, Perron said in an interview that he believed
the Oilers were maybe two years away from being “one
of the best teams in the League”. He added to his
comments later by saying it’s not about waiting, it’s
about playing with that mentality right now.

As the Oilers work towards being a strong playoff
contender, there’s no doubt Perron will be an integral
part of that goal.

of autographed jerseys was given away and proceeds
were directed to the Christmas Bureau of Edmonton.

Oilers Ladies and Oilers President of Hockey Operations Kevin
Lowe have a longstanding history of supporting those who need
it most by acting as honorary co-chairs of the Christmas Bureau
of Edmonton each festive season.
OILERS DELIVER PRESENTS TO STOLLERY – Led by
OILERS KINDERGARTEN LAUNCH – The Edmonton Oilers
Oilers Captain Andrew Ference, the team purchased
and delivered Christmas gifts to over 150 patients
at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. Gifts aside, the
new Oilers initiative certainly helped brighten many
children’s days heading into the holidays.
Community Foundation launched their second full-day
Kindergarten program at Princeton School in December. The
students performed a special song, decorated wooden hockey
sticks for guests and helped show off their favourite classroom
activities.

My favourite minor hockey coach was my dad because he/she was really good at helping me
learn the finer points of the game . My most memorable minor hockey moment came when
I played for the Westside Warriors ; I was 16 years old and we won in overtime
in an important tournament .
Before making it to the NHL, I played for the Wisconsin Badgers . The biggest challenge I’ve faced
during my career is balancing school and hockey in Wisconsin .
My first impression of Edmonton was that it’s very cold . My favourite part about playing in
Oil Country is the fans . During the season I live with Nuge . The best thing about that is
we like the same things and the worst thing is his messiness .
I’m most excited about the 2013-14 Oilers season because we’re all a year older and more
experienced . Our greatest strength is our resilience and the thing I’d like to see us work on
the most this season is finishing off games .

DELIVERS ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME EXPERIENCE

The good ol’ hockey game certainly is a great Canadian
tradition and the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation
(EOCF) is doing their part in helping to grant many children
the special opportunity to experience live Oilers hockey at
Rexall Place. Seats for Kids presented by Stantec distributes
donated game tickets to registered charities that provide
child and family services in Northern Alberta. This EOCF
initiative is only able to deliver these extraordinary
experiences thanks to the generosity of individuals and
businesses across Oil Country.
During the 2012-13 campaign, over 10,000 tickets, valued
at more than $344,000, were donated by Season Seat
Holders, Mini-Pack Holders or casual ticket buyers. For
many children, attending an Oilers game is simply a oncein-a-lifetime experience.
“Neither my son nor his aid had ever seen a live Oilers game
before so it was very exciting for both of them and greatly
appreciated,” said a Seats for Kids recipient. “Thank you
for making my son smile and expanding his world a little
more.”
The program’s spirit does not just end when the final buzzer
goes off either. The Seats for Kids program not only offers

an incredible Oilers experience, but each family has the
opportunity to spend time together enjoying a night-out that
they will remember forever.
This season, children and families from registered charities
including Ronald McDonald House, Stollery Children’s
Hospital, the Kidney Foundation of Canada and KidSport
Edmonton have all made memories that will last them a
lifetime.
“The enthusiastic response that our Seats for Kids program
generates is a true testament to Oil Country’s deep
generosity and care for the well-being of our community
members,” said Natalie Minckler, Executive Director, EOCF.
“The Oilers Foundation is thrilled to deliver children and
families the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that attending
an Oilers game brings; this kind of support for youth
education and youth health and wellness is very near and
dear to our Foundation.”

THE OILERS AND COYOTES ARE SET TO DO BATTLE FOR THE FOURTH OF FIVE MEETINGS THIS SEASON, WITH EDMONTON LOOKING
FOR ITS FIRST VICTORY after an overtime loss in their last meeting on New Year’s Eve in Phoenix. Taylor Hall assisted on all three
Oilers goals that night in a 4-3 decision for the home side, while Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, David Perron and Justin Schultz each
scored. The Oilers and Coyotes will conclude their season series in the desert on April 4.
OILERS TO WATCH
Right-winger JORDAN EBERLE
is riding a hot streak right now
with three goals in the last three
Oilers games, including scoring
three of Edmonton’s last four
goals. The 23-year-old is up to
17 goals and 40 total points on
the season, ranking him second
in points and third in goals on
the team. Eberle had 37 points in
48 games during the shortened
2012-13 season.
Winger DAVID PERRON snapped
a bit of a scoring slump on
Saturday by tallying one of the
two Oilers goals in their Hockey
Day in Canada matchup against
the Winnipeg Jets. The 25-yearold, acquired during the offseason from the St. Louis Blues,
has thrived with his new team,
currently tied with Taylor Hall for
Edmonton’s goal-scoring lead
with 18 tallies in 48 games.
COYOTES TO WATCH
Centreman MIKE RIBEIRO has
been one of Phoenix’s top point
producers this season, recording
34 points in 50 games in his
first campaign with the team
after spending last year with
the Washington Capitals. The
33-year-old started his career
with his hometown Montreal
Canadiens and also had a
successful stint with the Dallas
Stars between 2006 and 2012.
OLIVER EKMAN-LARSSON is a
prized young defenceman for
the Coyotes who has 26 points
in 48 games so far this season,
including four power-play goals.
The 22-year-old will compete
for his native Sweden at the
upcoming Winter Olympics in
Russia. Ekman-Larsson has
played for his country at previous
World U-18, World Junior and
World Championship events.

teams played in the Music City back on November 28, 2013, with Ilya
Bryzgalov making his first start in net for the Oilers. It was a dazzling
debut for the Russian netminder, as he made 33 saves in a 3-0 shutout
win that also saw Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
score goals. This will be the first Edmonton-Nashville game since the
Oilers traded goalie Devan Dubnyk to the Predators for forward Matt
Hendricks. Game time is 6pm MST on Sportsnet West and the Oilers
Radio Network.
SHEA WEBER
PREDATORS TO WATCH
SHEA WEBER is one of the top defencemen in the NHL as he ranks
second in Predators team scoring with 34 points, putting him sixth
among all blueliners in the League. The 28-year-old from Sicamous,
B.C., will also suit up for Canada at his second Winter Olympics
coming up next month in Sochi. Weber, who scored six points in seven
games as Canada captured gold at the 2010 Games in Vancouver, was
selected as an alternate captain for the national team.
DAVID
LEGWAND
Veteran centreman DAVID LEGWAND leads the Preds in scoring so far
this season with 35 points in 51 games, including 27 assists. The
33-year-old was drafted second overall by Nashville in 1998 and has
gone on to score 561 points in 945 games. The Detroit native’s best
season to date came in 2006-07 when he scored 27 goals and had 63
total points, though he’s only two seasons removed from his second
best campaign with 53 points.

Equipment managers Lang, Harrison and Scharff embrace demanding job description

It’s just after 5am and Oilers head equipment manager
Jeff Lang is heading out the door of his house in Sherwood
Park, off to Rexall Place for another game day. And with
the team flying to Vancouver immediately after that night’s
contest against Boston, he knows his head won’t be hitting
a hotel pillow for nearly 24 hours.
After that, it’s time for some laundry and switching the
locker room from practice mode to game-night mode,
followed by some lunch and a nap on the couch in the
locker room lounge. Eight-hour sleeps are few and far
between, Lang says, so they have to be strategic and plan
for one or two-hour slumbers during the day.
Exhausting? Definitely. Taxing on the body? You bet. Would
he trade it for anything in the world? Not a chance. It’s just
another day in hockey paradise for Lang, as well as his
assistant equipment managers Brad Harrison and Chad
Scharff. Together, the trio ensures the Oilers players are
fully prepared to go to battle every day with crisp, clean
jerseys, perfectly-sharpened skates and state-of-the-art
gear.
It’s all game-night execution from there, followed by swiftly
packing up the locker room, loading the equipment truck
and driving to the airport for the trip to the West Coast.
Upon arrival in Vancouver, they head straight to Rogers
Arena to unpack and set up the visitors locker room, finally
arriving at the hotel and going to sleep around 3am. Five
to six hours of shut-eye later, they’ll head back to the rink
and do it all over again.
Lang typically arrives at Rexall Place between 5:30 and
6am, heading straight to the Oilers gym to squeeze in
a workout during what will likely be his only down-time
of the marathon day. Harrison and Scharff arrive shortly
thereafter and they begin preparations for morning skate,
which starts around 10am.
Both from Saskatchewan, Lang (Regina) and Harrison
(Yorkton) actually graduated from the Athletic Therapy
program at Mount Royal College in Calgary at the same
time; however, they didn’t get acquainted until their paths
crossed during their respective endeavours with Hockey
Canada.

Lang worked with Midget AAA and Alberta Junior Hockey
League teams in Calgary before getting hired as a shipper/
receiver with Hockey Canada. He took care of all the skate
and equipment orders for the men’s and women’s national
squads, and with his athletic therapy background he also
placed orders for the medical staff. He advanced to become
an equipment manager travelling with the national teams,
eventually leading to his NHL gig.
During the months leading up to the 2002 Olympics
in Salt Lake City, Lang was the NHL’s point-man with
Hockey Canada in charge of coordinating all the players’
equipment and apparel needs for the impending Winter
Games. It just so happened Kevin Lowe, Barrie Stafford
and Ken Lowe of the Oilers were part of Team Canada’s
staff, and they were impressed with Lang’s work.
“Jeff was an invaluable member of our Team Canada
training staff in Salt Lake City,” Stafford recalls. “Our
experiences together in the Olympics led us to hiring him
as my assistant. He paid his dues, learned the ropes, and
has done an outstanding job at heading up our equipment
department. Jeff has put together a great team with Harry
and Chad.”
Lang had the tremendous honour of being on the Canadian
bench as they captured Olympic gold against the United
States, and after he returned home from winning another
international gold at the World Under-18 Championship
(Canada’s first-ever at that tournament) in Russia several
weeks later, Lang had a message waiting for him from
Kevin Lowe offering him a position as an assistant with
the Oilers.
Upon his arrival in Edmonton, Lang was fortunate to
be shown the NHL ropes from Oilers equipment legends
Stafford and Lyle “Sparky” Kulchisky. They taught him how
to turn a demanding workload into habitual behaviour, and
he’s carried that mantra with him throughout his tenure in
Oil Country.
“It was really good… I learned a lot from Barrie and Sparky
about how to work with a professional hockey team,” Lang
said. “It’s all about repetition and doing things the same
way every day so nothing gets forgotten. You need to pay
attention to detail and make sure all the little things get
done. That’s what they always preached. Just do the same
thing over and over and over so that the whole job becomes
habit.”
Like Lang, Harrison got his start at the junior level,
interning with the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen before working
full-time in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and
then back to the WHL with the Regina Pats. Harrison then

made a major transition, spending seven years as the
Head Equipment Manager with Frankfurt of the German Ice
Hockey League, also assisting with Hockey Canada during
tournaments in Europe.
Harrison then moved back to Canada to spend four years
with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, with whom he met current
Oilers Head Coach Dallas Eakins. Four years ago, Lang,
who had transitioned from assistant to equipment head
honcho, approached Harrison about joining the Oilers,
since the two were now well-acquainted thanks to their
work with Hockey Canada.
Scharff, meanwhile, joined the Oilers for the start of the
shortened 2012-13 season, after spending 11 years as a
member of the WHL’s Vancouver Giants, first as a player
(winning the League championship and playing in the
Memorial Cup in 2006), then as a scout, an assistant
coach and, lastly, the equipment manager. The Smoky
Lake, Alberta native had grown accustomed to life on the
West Coast, but he says he couldn’t pass up the opportunity
to return to Oil Country and break into the NHL.
“I was pretty fortunate to get this job here,” Scharff says.
“When I was 18 I knew junior was probably going to be the
highest level I’d get to play, but I wanted to stay in hockey
in a different capacity. I’ve always been really interested in
the gear and the technology. Now, I’ve got this opportunity
to work in the NHL and see what it’s all about. It’s the
best league in the world, and it’s been a great learning
experience for me. It’s a very rewarding job.”
Rewarding, yes, but also demanding and, at times, very
high-pressure. Lang, Harrison and Scharff hold themselves
to a high standard with their stringent attention to detail
and extensive planning for all possible situations that may
arise.

“We take a lot of pride in our job and we want to make
sure that everything we do is done properly and firstclass, because the Oilers organization is a first-class
organization,” Lang said. “We try to portray that in our
day-to-day work. We have to react quickly on our feet and
try to think of scenarios that could happen so we know how
to handle them if they do. We’ve always got plan A and B,
and even try to work past that to C and D if we need it.”
“The most pressure situations are obviously during
games when a guy breaks his stick or his skate or loses
something,” adds Harrison, recalling a particular horror
story in Germany when his team’s goalie had his jersey
stolen right out of the locker room and he had to take the
back-up’s uniform, switch out the name bar and have it
ready in time for puck-drop. “It’s the last five minutes of
the game and the coach wants the guy back on the ice, and
the pressure’s on you to make that happen.”
Lang, Harrison and Scharff agree being away from their
families for extended periods of time during the season
is the most challenging part of the job. On the flip side,
though, the exhilaration they get from a big win, coupled
with the dream of one day being part of a Stanley Cup
championship squad certainly keeps them motivated.
“You always hope that the time and energy you put in is
worthwhile and will benefit everybody in the long run,”
Lang said. “The end goal of winning the Stanley Cup is
enough reason to make the sacrifices we make and do
what we do every day.”
In addition to working for the Oilers during the NHL
season, Lang has also been an equipment manager for
Team Canada at the last two IIHF World Championship
tournaments, with Harrison joining him in Stockholm and
Helsinki for the 2013 event.

efore signing with his hometown
team in 2008, Jason Strudwick
spent time with the New York
Islanders, Vancouver Canucks,
Chicago Blackhawks and New York
Rangers. Returning home to finish
his career meant being close
to friends and family, and the
opportunity to get involved
in his community. This past
fall, Strudwick returned to the
rink as a competitor on Battle
of the Blades, coming in second
place with his partner Violetta
Afanasieva.
What was it like to sign with your hometown team
in 2008?
It was pretty special. I grew up a fan and went to a lot of
games where so many great players played on the ice at
Rexall Place. It was a neat opportunity to finish my career
here; I knew it would probably be the last place I would
play and it was special to finish my career in front of
people who had supported me my whole life. I had a pretty
fun NHL career, but a lot of people made a lot of sacrifices
to get me there which included my parents and my sister.
You recently came in second place on Battle of the
Blades, what was that experience like?
It was awesome, I had a really good time. My kids are very
young so the timing was right. I was feeling really healthy
and was in pretty good shape and felt I could do it. I didn’t
think I was going to enjoy the performing as much as I
did; I didn’t expect that at all. It was a lot of fun and just
a unique experience that I never thought I would enjoy as
much as I did.
Who was your greatest influence growing up?
My mom and my dad were a huge influence and I think
that they just kept me very level-headed. I never had
aspirations to play in the NHL. I just wanted to enjoy the
game, and as luck would have it, it kind of worked out.
They taught me the value of hard work and any success I
had can be attributed to the value they instilled in me in
understanding what hard work is.
You have three children, what advice would you give to
young hockey players today?
Sports are meant to be fun and at times I think we forget
that. I think you have to make sure it’s an enjoyable
experience for the kids to go and play whatever sport
they want. As you get older it can become your job, but it
shouldn’t be a job for a 15-year-old.
What was your greatest memory with the Oilers?
I really enjoyed being a part of the community. I played
numerous years away from Edmonton and to come back
home and get involved in the community, helping out with
charities, I put a lot of time into it. That was really special.

CRAIG MACTAVISH COMPLETES
NHL TRIFECTA IN OIL COUNTRY
and MacTavish’s storied career has played out right here
in the heart of Oil Country.
It’s been 31 years since Craig MacTavish became a
regular fixture in the National Hockey League. The past
three decades include four Stanley Cups, countless
triumphs, tributes and along the way, he’s earned a
Master’s degree in business from Queen’s University and
has spent time on the TSN panel.
Drafted out of college after spending two seasons with
the University of Lowell Chiefs in the NCAA, the Boston
Bruins nabbed the centreman in the ninth round (153rd
overall) in the 1978 NHL Draft. MacTavish, known inand-around Oil Country as “Mac-T”, has 17 NHL seasons
With MacTavish given the nod as the new Oilers GM on
April 15, 2013, this appointment would complete his NHL
trifecta. His evolution from player to coach to GM is a
journey only a special and select few get to experience,

under his belt including stints with the Boston Bruins, New
York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, St. Louis Blues, and of
course, eight full seasons played in the Orange & Blue.
The product of London, Ontario amassed 1,093 career NHL
games notching 213 goals and 260 assists, good for 480 total
points. He banked 701 games, 155 goals and 176 assists for
the Oil. Statistics aside, the number holding the most klout is
three, with Mac-T winning the NHL’s crown jewel, the Stanley
Cup with the Oilers during the dynasty years in ’87, ’88 and
’90. Donning the Captain’s “C” for the Oilers from 1992-94,
Mac-T has always understood team dynamics and the onus of
being a good guy on the ice and in the locker room.
Past-teammate Marc Bergevin, and current Executive Vice
President & GM of the Montreal Canadiens, recalls his old
friend’s strong character during his final NHL season and says
he was a standout team guy while the two were playing for the
St. Louis Blues.
“I’ve known Craig a long time, I knew him as a teammate first,
and he was a great teammate, a real great team guy, and even
though it was at the end of his career, he played the right way
– he didn’t cheat the game,” said Bergevin. “He really was a
character player. At the time I was 30 so I still had a ways to
go with playing, and I definitely looked up to him. He brought
excellent veteran leadership.”
Through his years playing, coaching and now as GM, this core
attitude hasn’t wavered.
“For me, being a good teammate is huge. I really understand
the importance of that,” said MacTavish. “The camaraderie
you get from being on the frontlines with your teammates
goes unmatched. These relationships you have when you play
together and from going through some tough times and being
challenged physically, those relationships are as strong a bond
as you’ll ever have.”
This team-first mentality from his playing days has certainly
helped shape the current approach of the man at the Oilers
helm. Now as GM, a crucial portion of his philosophy heavily
emphasizes strong communication and even stronger
relationships externally across the NHL and internally with
coaches, staff and scouts.
“Relationship building, whether with other managers,
spending time with our coaches, scouts or players, I want
them to know they have a voice and have them feel wellsupported by the organization,” shared the Oilers GM. “I try to
communicate this as much as I can because we’re all a team
and we’re all crucial to this whole process.”
No stranger to Oil Country, Mac-T has always been a key cog
in the Oilers nucleus. In between his stints on-ice and up-top,

MacTavish was named the eighth coach in Oilers history in
2000 where he spent eight seasons behind the bench leading
the charge all the way to the 2006 Stanley Cup Final.
“I know as a coach he reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2006
and to reach the Final is not an easy task, it’s a very difficult
thing to do,” said Bergevin. “Mac is very well-rounded; he’s
played the game, he’s been a scout, he’s coached at all levels.
I know he was a good, strong coach.”
In his eight seasons behind the bench, Mac-T ranks second
among Edmonton coaches in games coached, wins and
winning percentage, propelling him to be the 36th coach in
NHL history to have won 300 or more games.
“It’s all about the details of the game. You certainly have a
much greater appreciation for the high level of detail you need
to have,” said MacTavish. “You’re trying to get the players to
meet their full potential because as a coach that’s what you’re
all about and you use the psychology of the game to motivate
them.
“Getting the team to maximize its full potential has a lot to do
with your ability to get the players to reach their own maximum
potential.”
Given his charismatic personality, it’s only fitting that
MacTavish’s philosophy as a GM focuses on surrounding
himself with good people.
While one might assume that his favourite memories in Oil
Country are woven within his three Stanley Cup rings, the man
behind the Oilers helm actually recollects a time during his
coaching days as a top favourite.
“I think if you bring in really good people who have great
character and a high skillset, and you build a great organization
that way, that’s how you achieve success and that’s what we’re
trying to do here.”
“The best time I ever had with the Oilers was in the 2006
Stanley Cup run, when we went to the Final, that was the most
enjoyable because it was a little bit unexpected and you really
felt the passion of the fans in a much greater way than in the
mid-‘80s and ‘90s,” reflected MacTavish.
A well-respected GM among his players, coaches and staff,
Mac-T brings a level of integrity to his day-to-day duties. This
kind of credibility is one that is earned, not given, and is not
going unnoticed around the League, a sentiment Bergevin can
attest to.
“Not to undervalue our three Cups because that was fun too,
but the fan experience is a lot different today than it was back
in the ‘80s. Really, the passion that this city had in 2006 was
spectacular. That was as good of a time as I’ve ever had in
the game.”
“Craig MacTavish commands respect right when he walks in
the room. He’s won Stanley Cups and he comes with a lot of
experience in our League. I’m not in Edmonton to see his dayto-day rhythm but, I would bet my house when he walks in a
room, people automatically know he’s the boss.”
Though he’s still in the early stages of his new role as GM,
Mac-T appreciates the strategy involved and uses his past
experiences coaching to help define his broader, long-term
objectives.
Whether on-ice, behind the bench, or up in the press box,
Oil Country will never be short on character with Craig
MacTavish.
