Celebrating 150 Years of Camp
It all began with a simple wilderness experiment . . .
his year marks the 150th anniversary of camp. Much of today’s camping world
started out of the concern for “city” children. Outings were provided for children
and their mothers and then developed into various programs from two-week long
camps to family camping weekends and day long retreats. Camps have grown and
evolved over the years, but changes or not, they continue to provide children the
opportunity to make new friends, try new things, form relationships with friendly adults, and
get more physical activity.
Today’s camps continue the tradition with a broader
scope of programs and activities to enrich the lives of children. Decatur camps provide opportunities for children
to make friends, try new experiences, develop new skills,
form new relationships, and participate in sports and other
healthy physical activities.
When children come home from camp, they may gush
about the friends they made, where they’ve been and the
exciting things they’ve done. But they may not think to tell
about the life lessons camp has taught them – those skills
that, if nurtured at home after camp, translate into a lasting
self-confidence, an awareness of the importance of kindness, and a greater comfort in voicing their opinions.
Camp changes lives – allowing children to feel successful,
especially those who may struggle in traditional educational
settings. Camp is full of fun and excitement, but is so much
more, developing children who are better equipped to lead
in the twenty-first century with skills such as independence,
empathy, and the ability to work as part of a team.
Two past campers
offer their reflections:
At camp I met my best friend for life.
I learned that I can be independent, and
that being silly can be good for you. Camp
taught me to play in warm summer rain
and that I could conquer fears. I developed
a love of turkey and pita sandwiches. I am
more than I thought I could be. Fun is very
freeing. – Elizabeth May
At camp I developed as a whole person,
something you can’t get from school. During the summer, I worked at Camp Tecumseh, YMCA. My boss read me an article that
said, “School prepares you for college, camp
prepares you for life.” Nothing could be
more true. – Joella Scott

amilies today have many financial challenges. The Mary Miller Decatur Youth Fund
was established to provide the community and local businesses the opportunity to
help others in the community who need assistance.
Wes’s parents were going to withdraw Wes from the after-school program
though we all knew how important the program was for this middle school child.
Wes had been in the after-school programs since 1st grade. Suddenly, both parents were
without work and could only find sporadic jobs like working in someone’s yard or cleaning
homes. Rather than ask for assistance, they were going to withdraw their child. However,
the Youth Fund Committee intervened and
provided payment of the after-school fees for
two months to allow the family some time to

find work and regain their stability.
Another young boy began playing recreation basketball through the Youth Fund and
played throughout his young years. His experience playing recreation basketball allowed
him to try out and play on the high school team and have the potential of a college basketball career – all because of the Youth Fund.
As we approach summer camp, your contribution to the Youth Fund allows more children
to participate in enriching summer activities. These activities help youth to remain stimulated and involved and ready to learn when they return to school. Add your contributions to
the Decatur Barbecue, Blues and Bluegrass Festival, the Decatur Holiday Candlelight Tour of
Homes and the Decatur Wine Festival to help more children participate in positive activities
this summer. The Decatur Youth Fund is part of the Decatur Education Foundation.

Financial Assistance
Limited financial assistance is available to Decatur residents who
demonstrate a need. Fees are based on a sliding scale. Proof of residency and income verification are required for financial assistance
applications.
Recipients of assistance have a financial responsibility, as there are
no full scholarships available. Every participant has to make a contribution. Those applying for financial aid should understand that:
• An application for financial assistance is not a promise of financial aid.
• Only City of Decatur residents may apply for financial aid and are
required to provide verification of residency upon application, in the
form of a tax bill, utility bill or rent receipt.
• To apply for assistance for summer programs, residents are required to
submit verification of income. Copies of three current paycheck stubs,
letters of supplemental income, Medicaid letters, or copies of the preceding year’s filed taxes will be accepted. All information will remain
confidential.
• If your family receives financial assistance for a full-day camp program,
you cannot receive financial assistance for special interest camps during that time.
• Applicants can qualify for no more than three special interest camps
during the summer.
• If, during the course of the program, participants move from the city,
they will no longer be eligible for financial assistance and must pay
full nonresident tuition or withdraw from the program.
• If awarded financial assistance, participants will be responsible for
making a reduced program payment. Failure to make payments will
result in the revocation of assistance and removal of the participant
from the program.
• An application must be complete with required documentation before it will be accepted.
• If residents fail to qualify for assistance, they may attend the program
paying full tuition or will receive a refund of deposit.
