CROWN AMBASSADOR
A
nna, Seung-Ho, and Jay arrived
in the U.S. with not much
more than one another – and
a dream of making a good life in
America. A former kindergarten
teacher, Anna had to take a job as
a waitress – the 11 p.m. to 11 a.m.
“graveyard shift” – while Seung-Ho
tried to bring in what he could as an
oil painter, giving lessons and selling
his own work.
Creating the
Dream Life
Humble dreams
When they first started their
AMWAY™ business, Anna’s dreams
were humble. “I just wanted to
earn extra money to supplement
my waitressing, so my first big goal
was to make a thousand dollars a
month,” she recalls.
They had been living with Seung-Ho’s
family and had moved into their own
apartment, “but it was an awful
place, only about 700 square feet,
To make things worse, Seung-Ho
came down with a stress-related
illness and wasn’t able to help Anna
“ There’s a new energy out there, a new attitude
about Amway, and we can feel it.”
– JAY KIM
in a very bad neighborhood,” recalls
Jay, who doesn’t even like to think
about those days.
Immigrants who come to the U.S. face
challenges most of us cannot even
much with their newly launched
AMWAY business. But the situation
only made her more determined.
As one who believes the only way to
solve problems is by taking action,
she started working even harder.
Start of a family business
And she did have another good
helper: 9-year old Jay. “All the
materials were in English back then,
and my parents needed a translator.
So I took on the job!” he laughs.
He’s been working alongside them
ever since.
Anna tells about how the three of
them would sit at the kitchen table,
writing out Korean translations
on stickers, which they then put
on the product catalog pages to
share information with the Korean
community. It was a time-consuming
and arduous task. But it worked.
imagine, from learning a new language
to leaving their loved ones behind.
W
hen Michael, Anna, and Jay
Kim arrived in New York City
from Korea, they virtually
had to start over. They were a small
but strong family, and by sticking
together, they achieved success
beyond their wildest dreams.
Today, most AMWAY materials,
websites, and tools are all available in
Korean – and many other languages
– thanks in part to Anna’s influence.
(Theirs is the largest Korean
organization in North America.)

And in the meantime, their business has grown far and wide
to become a very culturally diverse organization. Here in the
United States, people of all ethnicities and backgrounds are
part of the Kims’ business, and their growing international
businesses include Canada, Korea, Vietnam, and China.
“I used to think the world was big,” says Anna. “Now I feel
that it’s very small.”
Of course, their business involves
a lot of travel, too, and the family
is looking forward to their first trip
to Prague in a few weeks. “We’ve
always loved the AMWAY™ business
trips,” says Anna, recalling their many
journeys to Hawaii, Peter Island, and
other gorgeous destinations. “When
we were struggling financially in that
tiny apartment, I always dreamed
about seeing the world, so I am very
grateful to be doing that today.”
The big melting pot
The Kims believe that having so many different ethnicities
creates a positive dynamic and unique synergy for their
business. “When you can’t speak English, you use more body
language, people are more respectful when you’re explaining
things, and the mix is also very interesting,” explains Jay. “So
our gatherings are not as formal. Everybody’s trying to practice
their English and at the same time, we’re learning about each
other’s culture.”
Dreams come true
Another of Anna’s dreams came true
a few years ago when she was able
to buy her mother’s house for her in
Korea. “It felt so good to do that for
her,” says Anna. “We’ve tried to talk
her into coming here to live with us,
but she has so many friends there
she doesn’t want to leave. She’s a
very popular lady!”
“Our meetings are very entertaining; they’re more like parties,
really,” adds Seung-Ho. “We’ll have music, dancing, different
ethnic groups will bring their traditional dishes to share, or
maybe we’ll give away some prizes in between product demos.
People socialize at our meetings – it’s another incentive to
come – and we always have fun.”
“My grandmother is also a very hard
worker. She’s always had a ton of
energy, so I think my mother gets her
work ethic from her,” observes Jay,
adding that he’s enjoyed watching his
mother transform into the confident
leader she has become. “She’s so
wise. She continually amazes me.”
Their lovely Long Island home is ideal for gatherings – a
spacious living room, a large backyard with a pool, and a lower

second-generation IBOs.
Asked what they enjoy most
about the lifestyle their success has
brought them, Anna says, “Really,
I think the four fundamentals of our
business – Freedom, Family, Reward,
and Hope – are what we love in equal
measure. And of course, the people.
The relationship side of this business
is something we truly value, being
with like-minded people who want to
better themselves.”
With all the innovations the company
has implemented in the past few
years, from more training to the

“I think the emphasis on health and beauty products has been
very good for our business,” observes Anna. “Consumers are
very interested in these types of products, but you have to
focus on what they need, not on what you want to sell.”

campaigns, the Kims believe it’s a better business than ever for
those seeking the American dream. “The AMWAY™ business is
the great equalizer,” says Seung-Ho, who loves the fact that so
much of their efforts are centered on helping others succeed.
“What makes our business so unique is that we don’t just sell
you products, then disappear. We become part of your lives
and you become part of ours.”
“I know what it’s like to struggle,” he continues. “I want to help
others reach their full potential and get the most out of life, just
as we have.”
Technology has made things much better, too, they say. “We
encourage people in our groups to use all the great tools
®
available that make it so easy to stay in touch, from Twitter
®
and Facebook to websites and smartphone apps. Today, I
can communicate with someone in Korea or Latin America
as easily as I can with someone in New York, and it’s all done
instantly!” says Anna.
Gen Y defined
Jay recently attended a company-sponsored seminar on
Gen Y, but he believes that moniker refers not just to a certain
age group, but to anyone who’s “current and up on all the
latest technology. It’s more a state of mind, really, and if you’re
text messaging, putting photos on Facebook, and most
importantly, feeling young, hungry, and entrepreneurial,
then I’d say you’re Gen Y,” he states.
Speaking of generations, Jay has a natural, easygoing
rapport with kids and serves as an ideal role model for
second- generation IBOs.
“People in our group are constantly introducing their
sons and daughters to me so that I can talk to them
about the business,” says Jay, adding that he also did
his share of babysitting when he was younger so parents
could attend meetings.
“To us, the AMWAY™ business is totally geared toward
family, from Steve and Doug taking over from their
fathers to the second and even third generations of
Amway employees, to the husbands and wives who
work together and teach their children how to become
entrepreneurs. It’s set up to be a multi-generational
business,” continues Jay. “And our actions really
embrace that. We’re a family business and we’ll always
be a family business.”
Extended family
Jay says a lot of kids today might look at working with
their parents as a negative thing, “but my message is,
it’s not! It’s a good thing. I’m with my parents five days a
week. We run our business together, we travel together,
we have fun together. You only have one family, and
they’re the people who love you the most.
But really, our family extends beyond the
three of us – everybody feels like family to us.
It’s a huge community of people who want to
be with each other. And that’s not like other
businesses.”
Giving back
Giving back is also a big part of their
business, and the Kims are currently in
the initial stages of planning a family
foundation. “We’re starting to think about
where our passions lie, where we could do
the most good, and just gathering ideas
about what our foundation might focus
on,” says Anna, explaining that in the past,
their philanthropic efforts have ranged from
holding fundraisers to donating to Amwaysponsored charitable activities.
Anna’s dreams continue to evolve and she
says her hope for the future
is to “have someone who is
not Korean, but has a Korean
upline, get up on stage and
tell their success story. I want
our organization to represent
all kinds of different people –
Chinese, Vietnamese, Latin
Americans, everyone! When
I see how we break down
barriers in our organization by
getting to know one another as
individuals, learning about one
another’s cultures, focusing
on our similarities rather than
our differences, I really believe
this could be a model for how
world peace might be achieved. I’ve seen it
happen in our organization. Maybe through
our business connections we can spread
this idea across the world.”
At the rate this family is going, they just
might succeed at doing that.
The average monthly Gross Income for “active” IBOs was $202.
U.S. IBOs were considered “active” in months in 2010 when they attempted to make
a retail sale, or presented the Amway IBO Compensation Plan, or received bonus
money, or attended an Amway or IBO meeting. If someone sustained that level of
activity every month for a whole year, their annualized income would be $2,424. Of
course, not every IBO chooses to be active every month. “Gross Income” means
PAGE 30 |
the amount received from retail sales, minus the cost of goods sold, plus monthly
bonuses and cash incentives. It excludes all annual bonuses and cash incentives,
and all non-cash awards, which may be significant. There may also be significant
business expenses, mostly discretionary, that may be greater in relation to income
in the first years of operation.

Emerald
Reaching Emerald is a significant achievement, the result of sustained effort and successful
leadership. As Emeralds, IBOs have demonstrated their ability to sell, recruit, train, motivate, and
teach others to do the same. They have built healthy organizations and are reaping the rewards
of their hard work.
Kantha and TL Balasubramaniam | Pennsylvania
Living the dream: “Our AMWAY™ business has given us a bright future and an
opportunity to stay young,” says Kantha. “Without it, life would be so boring!”
TL remarks, “We’ve seen many dreams come true through this opportunity, from
becoming business owners, to having family join us in the business, to living in a
beachfront home. But helping others succeed is the best reward!”
Looking to the future: TL and Kantha feel it’s their duty to help people in India.
“Our expectation of their success [in this business] is the greatest gift we can give
them,” he says. “By helping people we’re taking care of our family’s future, too,”
she states. Creating trust funds for their grandchildren and favorite charities is a
priority for this energetic couple.
Hai Yan Wu and Tommy Lam | California
Living the dream: “We love the AMWAY business lifestyle!” says Tommy Lam,
who owned a trading business in China. “There’s no pressure,” just a passion
to share the products and opportunity with others. “In a conventional business,
the focus is on self and making money. In Amway, it’s a shared vision and group
effort. It’s spending time with people we enjoy, people we think of as family.”
Looking to the future: Tommy and Hai Yan are looking forward to “traveling
the world with our family.” Daughters Jessica (10) and Victoria (7) are particularly
excited about checking out snow and the White House in Washington, D.C., later
this year. Tommy says they’re blessed to have the support of his mom, who lives
with them, as well as the loving guidance of their upline mentors.
William Ng and Carey Chen* | New York
Living the dream: “I was afraid of getting married and having children because
I was broke,” says William Ng, a business banker. Now, thanks to his and
Carey’s AMWAY business, “I feel like I have more control over my future.” The
couple welcomed son Carsten 18 months ago and enjoy shopping, dining out,
and spending time with friends and family.
Looking to the future: “The goal is not to worry about life anymore!”
exclaims William. He’s learned the key is to focus on their downlines’ success.
Adds Carey, who works for a nonprofit, “We want to help many more people
and charitiesin the future.” William believes money is not people’s major need.
What they need is more time to enjoy life. That’s what Amway offers them!

Gennadiy and Yelena Pavlenko | Oregon
Living the dream: “I was eight months pregnant and busy when we learned about
the AMWAY™ business opportunity,” says Yelena, who worked 12-hour days as a
®
Realtor . After just eight months of working their AMWAY business, she was able to
leave her job in real estate; Gennadiy closed his construction business a year later.
“We dreamed of sending our children to private school – and now we do,” he says.
Looking to the future: David (10), Timothy (7), and Danny (4) love having their
parents volunteer at school. “We’re looking forward to more vacations with them,”
Gennadiy says. “In Ukraine, we could not express our faith or achieve what we have
here.” Adds Yelena, “We’re so thankful to God for bringing us to America, where
we’ve experienced true freedom.”
Wei Sun and Chu-I Liu | Nevada
Living the dream: Wei “Wayne” Sun loves sharing the AMWAY business
opportunity. “We’re working hard to offer it to as many people as we can. We can
really help people through this business,” he says. Wayne believes he and his wife,
Chu-I Liu, make an excellent match: “I’m good at meeting people, and she’s good
at leading our team. I never envisioned this lifestyle,” he muses.
Looking to the future: “No question about it, our next step is Diamond,” Wayne
states. The couple hopes to follow in her parents’ (Holly Chen and Barry Chi)
footsteps and achieve Crown Ambassador someday. For now, they’re enjoying
being home with daughter, Elizabeth (3), and their baby boy, born in February 2011,
when they’re not out “recharging people’s hope batteries.”
Dean and Marcie Whalen | Alberta
Living the dream: Dean and Marcie have a new boss, and her name is Isabelle
Violet (born December 2). “The great thing is, we can take turns feeding her,” says
Marcie, since both no longer have outside jobs. “We’ve been able to plan our future
since starting our AMWAY business (at just 23 years old),” says Dean. “Our goals are
starting to manifest now. It’s pretty cool!”
Looking to the future: “We believe in three levels of freedom: debt free, job free,
and chore free,” states Dean. “We just hired a personal assistant to free up even
more time.” Adds Marcie, “We’re looking forward to sharing our blessings with other
people,” including those on their team, their parents, and more children. “We can’t
wait to travel the world with them!”
The average monthly Gross Income for “active” IBOs was $202.
Approximately 46% of all IBOs were active.

IBOAI
Election Results
T
he Independent Business Owners Association International (IBOAI) is the primary
advocacy organization for IBOs in North America. It advises Amway on every facet of the
business, from products and promotions to operations and business guidelines. IBOAI
Board and Amway North America work together to bring positive change and to make certain
the business is better for every generation. The founding families built this process into the
business when it was established in 1959 and it continues to this day.
The Board of Directors has full responsibility for governing all official activities of the IBOA
International. This group meets three times a year. Special meetings may also be called as often
as necessary to handle important matters that arise.
The newly elected 2012 IBOAI Board of Directors:
•
•
•
Kathy Victor, Chairman
Bob Andrews, Vice Chairman
Brad Duncan, Past Chairman
Many of the responsibilities of the IBOA
International are fulfilled by four committees that
report directly to the Executive Committee during
their regularly scheduled meetings.
These four committees are:
Awards & Recognition Committee
Angelo Nardone, Chairman; Joe Markiewicz,
Vice Chairman; Ignacio Alvarez; Brad Duncan;
Matt Tsuruda
Business Operations Committee
Kathy Victor, Chairman; Kanti Gala, Vice
Chairman; Alberto Aguilera; Doug Weir;
Howie Danzik
Legal & Ethics Committee
Marketing Advisory Committee
Terry Andrews, Chairman; Theresa Danzik,
Vice Chairman; Julie Duncan; Lata Gala;
Sandy Hawkins; MaryBeth Markiewicz
Two additional committees round out
the leadership of the IBOAI – the Hearing
& Disputes Committee, established to
participate in Conciliation Procedures, and
the Governance & Oversight Committee,
established to review Board actions and
operations to ensure the IBOAI remains
aligned with the principles of integrity,
responsibility, and corporate governance.

Thoughts
Brad Duncan served as Chairman of the Independent Business
Owners Association International (IBOAI) last year. As he turns over
the reins to Kathy Victor, we spoke with him about his experience.
What was your proudest accomplishment
during your tenure as Chair?
It was when we came to Ada to meet with Amway
employees and talk to them about what it’s really like to
be an IBO out in the field. Of course, we meet with the
executives all the time, but to sit and answer questions
and tell our stories to hundreds of people – everyone
from product development to marketing – and educate
them about what we do on a day-to-day basis was just
a great experience. We talked about how we’re more like
teachers than sales people; we teach people how to own
and run their own businesses. I think those sessions
were very valuable. We’re all on the same team, and the
more we can understand one another, the stronger
we’ll all be.
Speaking of unity, you said you felt the
Board was more unified than ever right now.
Can you talk more about that?
I’ve served on the Board for more than a dozen years,
and I’ve never seen it as unified as it is today. When
you think about the fact that we’re all from different
organizations all over the country, and most of us have
been in the business for many years, with our own
leadership styles, you’d expect some discord. But we
all respect one another and get along really well; there
are no hidden agendas, and we all agree on the direction
the company is going. We support and encourage one
another, just like we do in our own organizations, and it’s
very satisfying to be a part of that. I’m not sure people
really understand what a big deal the IBOAI Board is, but
we do a lot of work behind the scenes.
What do you see for the future of Amway?
I see a lot of growth. We have incredible leadership with
Doug and Steve; their hearts are in the business and we
wouldn’t be where we are without their leadership. And
the Amway financial situation is incredibly strong; it’s
the only family-owned company I know of that is totally
debt-free. Here we are in the middle of a recession and
we had two $1 billion months last year! I’m very excited
about the future of this company.
Any advice for the new Chair, Kathy Victor?
Kathy is one of the most efficient and capable people I
know. She will do a fantastic job and is to be commended
as the first woman ever to serve as Chairman of IBOIA – a
tremendous accomplishment! It was an honor to serve
with her as my Co-Chair in 2011 and I wish her the very
best of luck.
