Established in 2005 as the first Italian association of manufacturers of materials, equipment and technology, suppliers of services and specialized companies, Assorestauro represents the Italian sector of restoration and conservation of material heritage. To date, it is
the sole association and a reference in the domestic and international market for anyone
willing to start working in the conservation sector in Italy, to be intended in its broadest
sense, that is, as a synthesis of the various disciplines involved, of the professional specialists, of the available technology and of the growing business community. If examined as a
whole, the sector accounts for a large market share and has a meaningful impact on tourism, industry and bioconstruction.
WHAT ARE ASSORESTAURO’S GOALS?
Assorestauro is the National Trade Association for the Restoration Sector, representing
manufacturers of materials, equipment, technology, specialist companies, designers and
suppliers of services for analyses, surveys and diffusion. The Association offers its members information, assistance, advice and training both directly and through its partners,
with a view to building a consistent and unitary orientation to the different sectors of the
restoration industry at national and international level.
As a national association, Assorestauro is aimed at coordinating, protecting and promoting the interests of the restoration sector and it represents before the outer market, in Italy
and abroad, the common positions for technical and economic issues, as well as image,
by carrying out targeted activities in such relevant fields of the sector as information and
communication, protection of common interests (economy, image, standards), research
and development, promotion.

WHAT DOES ASSORESTAURO DO ?
Several activities aimed at promoting the professional skills in the restoration sector fall in
the scopes of the Association. They include diagnostic analysis, design and on site execution, producing technology and materials, as well as contributing technological innovation, with the support of Institutions, Universities, Agencies for the protection of cultural
heritage and ICE, the Agency for the internationalization and the promotion abroad of
Italian businesses. This type of action includes both promotion in Italy (conferences and
training seminars, trade exhibitions, courses and similar initiatives) and abroad (foreign
missions, training, b2b encounters, restoration sites), where member companies are involved and offered the chance to study and penetrate foreign markets through projects
co-sponsored by national and international bodies.

STATE OF CONSERVATION
The general conditions of the monument were critical, owed to several types of alteration. Climate changes and the microclimate affected by the presence of water and ambient
aerosol generated an ideal habitat for microbiological and biological attack, especially on
the cliff rocks. There were particularly thick limestone deposits on the areas affected by
running, spurting and stagnating water, whose content in calcium is quite high in Rome.
The fountain aerosol, rainfalls and winds are the main cause of decohesion and corrosion
of the most exposed areas.
The heavily polluted urban environment caused layers of dust, topsoil and dirt to pile up on
all semi-confined areas, resulting in the frequent recurrence of early black encrustations in
the majority of the undercuts.
The great affluence of people and the improper use of the monument by visitors caused
damage to the accessible portions of the basin and cliff (engravings, graffitis, chewinggums).
SITE
With the aim of allowing visitors to “enjoy the monument as a whole and complete artefact” during the works and to follow their progress, the following steps were adopted:
_ install a totally transparent fence, complete with informative decals;
_ erect the scaffolds at different times, so as to make a portion of the façade always visible; in particular, the central portion of the façade was covered first, while the side portions were hidden only when the mid-portion scaffold was dismounted. No tarpaulins
were used, so as to allow visitors to easily follow the works in progress;

_ build an elevated walkway accessible from the fence, which runs through the basin like
an “inner lane into the site”, so that tourists can approach the work areas.
_ to preserve the long-established tradition of throwing coins into the fountain as a wish
to return to Rome, a substitute basin was built in the middle portion. This way, tourists
could keep throwing their coins above the fence and Caritas staff could keep collecting
them.
To both sides of the fence, two large screens showed an uninterrupted sequence of pictures and films about the History of the fountain and of the square, including period prints
reproducing the ancient versions of the fountain, also called Show of the Virgin Water, as
well as odd events occurred within or near the fountain filmed and stored in the Historical
Archives of Istituto Luce, and shots from famous movies having the renowned fountain as
their backdrop.
RESTORATION OF TRAVERTINE AND MARBLE SURFACES
- Removal of superficial incoherent deposits of dust, topsoil and bird droppings by means
of brushes and hoover;
_ disinfection of superficial weeds with weedkillers;
_ disinfection by means of two applications of biocides on all surfaces;
_ cleaning of all surfaces with compressed air sprayers at low pressure, with the help of
large and small brushes and sponges;
_ chemical spot cleaning aimed at removing all black encrustations from the undercuts.
The affected areas were first padded with a weakly basic solution of cellulose fibre pulp
and then any residual salts were rinsed off with demineralized water;
_ mechanical cleaning of thick deposits (black encrustations) and of all limestone encrustations from the cliff. This long and complex operation included a number of steps,
with the use of different tools, such as hand-operated hammers and hardies, compressed air tools (hammers, vibrating tools and micro-air-abrasion equipment manufactured by Ibix, model Trilogy 9 with HELIX helical vortex gun and almandine media of
grain size 80-120 mesh), all of which ensured total protection of patinas;

_ consolidation of the areas around any old heavy reparations, where decohesion and alveolization of travertine
looked severe, which were removed by infills of microacrylic resins;
_ machine-operated removal of any previous reparations
that featured adhesion defects or poor aesthetic quality;
_ gluing of restored portions of cement mortar and/or travertine flakes with epoxy resin, sometimes with the addition of threaded stainless steel or fibreglass pins;
_ execution of deep reparations with Lafarge hydraulic lime
mortars and pozzolana;
_ execution of superficial reparations with carefully selected hydraulic mortars, after colour and grain size sampling;
_ execution of micro reparations with slaked lime and marble dust mortars;
_ treatment of all copper foil elements (plants and trumpets) by machine-operated cleaning of all surfaces,
aimed at removing oxidation and residues of paint; corrosion-proof treatment, rehabilitation of colours with
paints;
_ final protection of all surfaces with a polysiloxane coating.
STUCCO AND PLASTER SURFACES
Detailed study, also based on research of historical records
conducted in collaboration with the Site Manager and the
Scientific Manager, and collection of numerous samples to
choose the correct paint colours and to repair the degraded
surfaces (use of imitation travertine of the same colour as
travertine);
_ application of acrylic resin primer on all surfaces;
_ application of two layers of limestone paint in aqueous
solution;
_ finishing of all stucco surfaces by sponge application of a
film of watercolours and acrylic resin in aqueous solution
to mimic travertine;
_ finishing of all plaster surfaces by sponge application of a
film of watercolours and acrylic resin in aqueous solution
to mimic travertine.

The latest case history
The cleaning process is a very delicate phase of the conservation work. In fact, it is an irreversible activity, which, if not carefully calibrated, can cause irreparable damages to the
monument to be restored. Therefore, it is not possible to work with standard techniques,
as every monument is a unique case on which it is necessary to calibrate the intervention
mode specifically.
This awareness is the root of the cleaning method proposed by IBIX; the structure of the
equipment, their functions and adjustments, are specially designed to ensure the greatest
control over the process, preserving the quality of the result.
Effectiveness and potential damages are the two parameters that lead the cleaning result.
The effects of the cleaning should therefore be evaluated considering the future outlook, in
order to monitor the cleaning effects in the long term.
The cleaning of the fountains, carried out partially with IBIX technologies, is an excellent
example for the intervention process described above. The importance of the monument
- requires the utmost care in defining the operating mode and it is an outstanding test for
the cleaning level guaranteed by IBIX equipment.
Describing the stages of the fountain cleaning (those concerning the use of IBIX technologies) is therefore a great way to explain the IBIX method. The intervention project consists
of three phases: materials analysis, cleaning tests, results analysis. The correct execution
of the sequence leads to the best cleaning process, which will be developed in the specific
case of intervention.

The cleaning of the fountain was carried out in order to remove the thick deposits of limestone - which had been uplifting over the years - ensuring the utmost respect of the underlying marbles.
Through various samplings, it is possible to define accurately the layer of material on which

stopping the abrasion. The work is carried out at low pressure, starting from 0.2 bar. On the
Trevi Fountain, the equipment were used in the dry mode (without water). The material
selected for the intervention was the almandite exrafine 200 mesh. It consists of sub-angular shaped grains of mineral stone: it is an all-natural, chemically inert mineral abrasive
containing no toxic metals, silica, ferrite and/or carcinogenic substances. It is a very tough
and effective material, but at the same time it allows an optimum selectivity of the cleaning process and enables to use very low operating pressure values.
The media cleaning operations were performed with the HELIX gun, which is another important parameter of intervention. The Patented HELIX® system consists in a special operating gun equipped with an original helical vortex nozzle design: this guarantees not only
the maximum protection of the valuable surface patinas and historic coatings of precious
artefacts, but also optimum worksite performance. This system exploits a combination of
the Venturi effect, generated by the special conformation of the outlet cone, with a device
that induces a helical rotary movement, in order to reduce considerably the air capacity required to operate the machine. The wider tangential contact area generated by any same
working pressure guarantees up to 30% more in productivity.
HELIX is a tool created specifically for the IBIX intervention project. Its particular features
perfectly fit with the scientific approach described above.
The application gun increases the distance of the operator from the surface minimizing
invasiveness without losing the evenness and effectiveness of the cleaning and avoiding
that the operator needs to make constant corrections, which can result in the definitive
loss of the layers to be conserved.
Thanks to the IBIX technologies, it has been possible, in important historical and architectural contexts, to satisfy completely the project requirements.

CRYPTOPORTICUS,
THE DOMUS TIBERIANA ON THE PALATINE
INTRODUCTION
As reconstructed by Clemens Krause (see “Il Palatino area sacra sud-ovest e Domus
Tiberiana”, Rome 1998), the Domus Tiberiana (the Palace of Tiberius) was bounded by
the Clivus Victoriae to the north, by the so-called cryptoporticus of Emperor Nero to the
east (still walkable today), by some premises partly open and partly closed towards the
area of the Magna Mater to the south, and by a retaining wall called Bastione Farnesiano
to the west. In substance, at least its oldest part corresponds to the current perimeter of
the Farnese Gardens on the Palatine Hill.
During the present inspection, the sole site of the cryptoporticus will be visited, because
works in the Domus Tiberiana have been completed.
THE DOMUS TIBERIANA ON THE PALATINE
The large complex known as Domus Tiberiana is one of the most important on the Palatine
and is made up by a succession of buildings which are badly inter-connected.
Compared with the original configuration (Tiberius), in the period from Domitian to
Hadrian (I -II cent. BC) there have been constant changes and expansions until reaching its
current appearance (the part towards Via Nova) (Figure 1).
The first phase, corresponding to the period of Nero, was characterised by a base comprising
a casting of Roman concrete profiled with blocks of travertine. The phase under Domitian
modified the Neronian scheme: the facade towards the Forum was reconstructed,
completing the new front with a long loggia and transforming the Domus into a sort of
offshoot of the great Palazzo which was built on the hilltop. Finally, Hadrian continued
interventions: large arches were built which passed over the Clivus Victoriae, taking the
front of the Palazzo up to Via Nova, with an architecturally spectacular result.

At a later date, some tabernae were built on this front, probably also with the function of
constituting a kind of buttress to contain the thrust of the wall, which was perhaps was
originally intended to be internal and not a facade (Figure 2).
The foundation ground of the original nucleus consisted of tuff rock, while the foundation
layer towards the Roman Forum (Via Nova) consisted of silt-clay sediments from the
Velabro, the course of which was diverted during construction of the Cloaca Maxima.
The original structures (whose walls have thicknesses between 1.20 and 1.50 m) consisted
of four levels:
1. Via Nova (23 m above sea level)
2. Clivus Victoriae (33 m above sea level, ground floor level)
3. Level 41 m above sea level (first floor)
4. Orti Farnesiani level 51 m above sea level (coverage)
Most of the structures collapsed in ancient times and the remains were covered with soil,
which permitted realisation of the gardens and terraces of the “Orti Farnesiani” on the
upper level.

INVESTIGATIONS AND INTERVENTIONS CARRIED OUT IN THE PAST
In 1870, major excavations took place at the Roman Forum, and in 1900 the structures were
uncovered: these excavations certainly negatively affected the stability of the structures
facing the Forum.
Around 1891, excavations were carried out in the area close to the Via Nova and on this
occasion the walls of the orthogonal tabernae on Via Nova were restored.
In 1960, the concrete brick floors covering the second level on the Clivus Victoriae were
built, while in 1970 a first system of perpendicular metal tie-rods was put in place Via Nova
to interconnect various detached walls.
From 1985 for a period lasting around 10 years, a series of topographic measurements
was carried. These measurements indicate that there are not only downward vertical
movements (about 0.2-0.4 mm/year) with cyclic behaviour (probably of a seasonal
climatic nature) but also a shift towards the Forum in a north-east direction with maximum
values of 5 mm (1985-95). At the perimeter of the Domus towards the Forum, the surface
layers have been eroded and covered by alluvial silt-clay deposits.
In 2000, the “rigid” tie-rods were replaced by a system of new tie-rods (Diwidag bar type
with diameter of 26 mm), anchored with leaf springs so as to have a deformable bond
such as to maintain the substantially constant forces, independently of (or in any case
little affected by) shifts induced by movements non-stabilised ground, as well as by
thermal effects (Figures 3, 4, 5). A similar technique was applied to support the vaults of
Palazzo Ducale in Genoa (Chap. ...) and for the vaults of the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi
(Chap. ...). In this way, it was possible to achieve a contrast against differential movements
produced by soil sliding without, however, purporting to block them, thus avoiding
dangerous concentrations of stresses. This intervention was associated with a monitoring
system able to predict adverse developments and take timely corrective action, such as
adjusting the tension in the chains, etc.
Monitoring provided interesting data and, in particular, showed that the chains, as
designed, undergo moderate cyclic variations due to thermal effects (of the order of 300
kg/sq. cm.). The relative displacements measured at the ends of the chains, which were
slight, show that these do not significantly affect the stress state in the chains due to

“flexible” anchorages made with the system of leaf springs (Figure 6).
The most important lesions in the vast existing crack pattern, in particular those affecting
the separation baffle between the 5th and the 6th spans, result in movement, even if with
modest values.
DIAGNOSIS: STATE OF CONSERVATION, INSTABILITY, DEGRADATION
The state of instability that characterises the area in question can be broadly divided
into two categories: the first concerns the problems affecting the entire structure as a
whole; the second is related to events such as injuries, cracks caused by localised crushing
or degradation of materials, etc. Even if on the one hand these local phenomena do
not prejudice the global safety margin of the structure, on the other hand they reduce
durability and can represent a source of danger for persons. The signs of instability that are
detectable today are difficult to interpret in relation to historical phases of construction,
soil dissimilarities, the effects of excavations that have followed one another over time,
previous reconstruction and reinforcement interventions, as well as the earthquakes
that more than any other event have contributed to collapses and instability (among the
strongest earthquakes, we recall those of 434, 801, 847, 1347 and 1703 which caused major
damage to the Colosseum. The structures which survived collapses, to which degradation
and neglect also contributed, are affected by diffuse lesions, detachments, misalignments
and material degradation. The front of the Forum is today completely detached from the
body behind. Lesions affect all the transverse walls up to the terrace at the level of the Orti
Farnesiani. Vertical lesions cross the two paved levels of the Domus up to the level of the
Orti. The foundations of the northern part towards the Forum, as noted above, are subject
to worse behaviour than those behind; the presence of silt-clay layers which affect the eastfacing zones more broadly than the west-facing zones, although of discrete mechanical
characteristics, may have contributed to the instability that is detectable today, even
though all the evidence suggests that earthquakes certainly played an essential role in
collapses. Evaluation of the instability and forms of degradation that have affected the
Domus is briefly described in the following paragraphs.

Spine walls between Clivus Victoriae and Via Nova
The entire area is characterised by a marked crack pattern of complex interpretation, which
has also been the subject of monitoring for some periods (Figures 7). This crack pattern
was already evident from the times of the excavations and demolitions in the 19th century,
at which time some 16th century structures of the Farnese were removed, in part also close
to the structures in question, along the Via Nova. There are deep lesions of isolated or
branched detachment on the orthogonal dividing spine walls at Clivus Victoriae, which
show a tendency to detachment between the fronts downstream and upstream of the
area in question, which are visible both internally and externally. Such lesions are evident
on the bases in Roman concrete of some buttressses on the front along the Via Nova: in
some areas the width is greater at the bottom and tends to narrow further up.
Vaults of areas between Clivus Victoriae and Via Nova
Even the vaults in concretion on the first level are affected by instability: most of these are
visibly damaged by the fractures affecting the vertical walls (Figure 8).
Front on Via Nova and Tabernae
The same front displays localised sections of heavily damaged and disaggregated Roman
concrete such as to require the necessary provisional props of pipes and joints (Figure
(Figure 5.8.10).). The party wall between the structures of the Clivus Victoriae and
the tabernae on Via Nova is detached from the structures behind it, and also presents
significant lack of material in the thickness (Figure 10).
The front of the tabernae on Via Nova consists of three levels of walls parallel to the
Via Nova which are disconnected between them. These walls are affected by structural
instability, to which continuous infiltration of rainwater has contributed.
Clivus Victoriae
Along the east-facing paved corridor (Clivus Victoriae), a major lesion can be seen at the

base, which was athe lready visible during the excavation of the ‘70s; lately it has been
brought to light, confirming the disconnection and a related movement of the entire front
overlooking the Via Nova. Some pillars along the Clivus Victoriae show evident signs of
crushing accented by detachment of the curtain from the original core through vertical
lesions (Figure 11). Since the loads are small in relation to the resistant section, the cause is
probably to be sought in the earthquakes or overload corresponding to differential sinking.
On the other hand, some pillars on Clivus Victoriae present failures at the springer of the
arches (Figure 12). The stretch of the east-facing vault is affected by a large crack pattern
and is detached from the south wall.
North-west corner
The corner area between the Via Nova and Via S. Teodoro has wide diagonal lesions that
are probably due to the effect of earthquakes as well as settling of the soil that have
occurred in the area (Figure 13 and Figure 14).
Structures upstream of Clivus Victoriae
The structures upstream of Clivus Victoriae are affected by a conspicuous crack pattern
that seems to confirm the tendency to disconnection of the entire north-west towards
the Via Nova and the Forum: in fact, some lesions affect the orthogonal dividing walls
at Clivus Victoriae and are mostly feedthroughs with a vertical progression, while others
affect arches, vaults and lintels running parallel to the clivus (Figure 15).
STRENGTHENING INTERVENTIONS
General aspects
The interventions can be divided into global concerning the behaviour of the ensemble
and local concerning individual elements. The global interventions essentially concern
instability of the facade, and since it is currently neither necessary nor convenient to
intervene on the foundations, the project is oriented towards recreating a structural
continuity and containment of pressures, in addition to earthquakes. The system of

shackling already in place creates a quite effective anchorage in the various walls parallel
to the facade although it must be extended to structures upstream of Clivus Victoriae. The
chaining must be supplemented by interventions to create a structural solidity between
the various juxtaposed walls (by means of injections, insertion of connecting tie-rods, etc.).
Local interventions essentially concern rebuilding of the vaults in order to raise the paved
level and rearrange the terrace on the Orti Farnesiani, in addition to eliminating the old
concrete brick floors. The coverage vaults on the second level towards Clivus Victoriae
should be reconstructed in accordance with the ancient instructive techniques. Another
intervention concerns the construction of some tabernae which also have the function of
stiffening buttresses.
Ongoing interventions1
The first operation under way concerns the compensation of lesions in the spine walls and
vaults, integrating them in correspondence with the failures.
However, the core problem of the current project concerns seismic protection for a building
that is intrinsically vulnerable due to the different quotas of strength of the foundations
and the unevenness of the land involved. Seismic improvement is based on reconstitution
of the walll “box” by compensating for the lesions, giving the walls a tensile strength
by means of the insertion of some enchainments. The mounting system has shown a
substantial stability of the phenomena for which it was planned to replace the existing
chains, anchored to the flexible leaf springs with new enchainments partly inserted inside
the masonry, and therefore not visible. Parallel enchainments have also been inserted to
the front of the Via Nova with a view to creating a behaviour of the whole, eliminating local
phenomena of tilting of the front of the header, not opposed by the vault that originally
was to cover the environment concerned by the ramp. Reorganisation of the “heart” of the
Tiberian Complex also includes reconstruction of the vaults and orientation of the terraces
that cover the Domus complex. The new vaulted structures are in pieces of tuff mixed with
mortar made of natural hydraulic lime of different thicknesses depending on the light
cover.

This originally underground structure probably belonged to a network of galleries and passages running through the foundations of the Domus and apparently connected to the
perimeter area now visible (along the Clivius Victoriae to the north, below the Bastione
Farnesiano to the west, etc.).
After being used as farming fields and as a place of spoliation of ancient materials throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance period, the area was eventually buried below the
gardens of the Farnese family, which were built in the mid 16th century by cardinal Alessandro Farnese, who wished to ideally reconnect with the ancient Rome of the Caesars
(VV. AA. “Palatino area sacra sud ovest e Domus Tiberiana”, Rome 1998 Maria Antonietta Tomei, “Scavi francesi sul Palatino, le indagini di Pietro Rosa per Napoleone III”, Rome
1999).

Regarding its construction, the whole vault is opus coementicium, but it was probably
strengthened (or thoroughly reconstructed) back in Roman times with the erection of a
60cm-thick false wall rising up to the brick abutments (with an outer face made of horizontal joints and a conglomerate core of inert bricks) and finished on top with concrete
conglomerate and tufa blocks.
This sheeting was probably required after some collapse, but its static function is actually
null in the brick portion, as demonstrated by in-situ tests carried out with flat jacks (figures
19 e 20).
Some works were started in May 2006 to make a number of underground areas accessible
again. The works were supervised by architect Giuseppe Morganti with the help of “Studio
Croci e Associati” for the structural issues, of archeologist Ernesto Monaco for survey and
constructional interpretation and, in the latest years, of archeologist Andrea Schiappelli
for the excavations.

Generally speaking, structural damage consists in some deep cracks of the conglomerate vaulted
roof crossing the barrel vault diagonally from the south-eastern corner along the springers, from
one basement window to the next. This caused the blocks to slide for some centimeters along an
oblique plan and resulted in the fall of large amounts of materials in proximity of one of the abutments (figures 22-25).
The concerned areas were eventually brought back to safe conditions with a number of works over
the years.
Synthetically speaking, the works consisted in installing a number of supporting structures in the
southern gallery, as necessary while entirely reversible interventions to guarantee safety. At the
same time, the continuity of the masonry was rebuilt by means of injections into the cracks.

A most severe damage to the structure consisted in subsidence of some portions, caused
by the collapse of the caves or galleries found below, which in some cases resulted in the
collapse of about 80cm-thick layers between the cap and the springer. Along the northsouth gallery, subsidence generated the collapse of the whole springers. (figures 27-30).
The cracks are found along the whole north-south longitudinal stretch of the gallery, although damage entities get progressively less severe southwards. Among various lesions,
a horizontal crack is visible along the western wall of the vault, running along almost its
whole length.
In the north-western corner area, it was understood that, at least for the western portion,
the cause of damage lied in the collapse of a number of galleries and sewage plants. For
the sake of safety, the collapsed areas were excavated and a number of underpinnings
were erected with a view to rehabilitate the capacity of transferring load from the built
structures to the ground.

A team of skilled restorers and scientists have been working for years at the conservation
of magnificent monuments that adorn the Square of Miracles (Piazza dei Miracoli) in Pisa.
The first project involved the worldwide-famous Leaning Tower. In this case the surface
conservation status was strongly influenced by the inclination of the tower, which accentuates the deterioration linked to natural aging of the materials and to the conservation
history of the Tower.
Studies and tests had shown that the major conservation problems were related to erosion
and disintegration of the stone and to the presence of gypsum and limestone deposits. In
the area under the slope, however, the particles which are not washed away by the selfshielding effect of the Tower itself, are deposited and cause the formation of black crusts.
Diffuse cracks, fractures and detachments of fragments are evidence of crushing phenomena related to the inclination suffered by columns and capitals.
The most appropriate methodologies for the restoration have been identified on the basis
of the investigations results and direct experience gained in a project yard that took place
in 2000, with the contribution of the European Union.
Eleven cleaning systems, 5 products for consolidation, 18 types of mortars were considered
appropriate and necessary for the conservative intervention. Among the cleaning methods, laser technology has been used successfully on the most damaged and exfoliated

parts of the capitals for a gradual and safe removal of the black crusts without damaging
the fragile substrate affected by cracks and gaps.
Subsequently, the efforts of restorers focused on the preservation of the Cathedral. The
last actual restoration of the monumental Cathedral, aside from the renovated façade for
the Jubilee of 2000, dates back to the forties. A total restoration using advanced technologies has been carried out. The first phase started in 2013 and ended up in 2015. The
intervention started with a pilot project that healed a portion of the basin apse next to
the transept of the Blessed Sacrament, then the restoration has been extended to the entire building which was in a state of high degradation characterized by biological attack
and aggressive deposits, moreover black crusts and missing parts were found in the most
decorated parts. These decorated parts (such as capitals) were all laser cleaned: the laser
allowed the fast and safe removal of the thick black crust even from very modelled and
curled decorations.
The conservation problem in Pisa shows a clear example of the potentials of laser cleaning
of stone. Lasers are nowadays seen as an additional instrument in the restorer’s toolbox.
The main advantages of the use of lasers for the removal of black crusts from stone surfaces are the following: no chemical species are required, the removal is very progressive so
the restorer can decide the most appropriate level of cleaning, the cleaning is extremely
precise because it involves only the area lit by the laser beam, which may be accurately
limited as needed and last, but not least, if the laser is properly set, the process of cleaning
automatically stops after the black crust removal because of the different reflectivity of
the marble. After the pioneering work made by J. Asmus since 1970 (1) (2) it has been shown

by many studies (3) (4) that the Nd:YAG lasers offer the best compromise of selectivity and
efficiency, being also rugged enough to work in difficult conditions such as open air or on
scaffoldings. It has been proven that, beside the wavelength, the pulse duration is a crucial parameter for the optimization of the laser-stone interaction (5) (6). In the 90s a novel
fiber-coupled Nd:YAG laser emitting pulses of 20µs, the so-called Short Free Running
(SFR) temporal regime was introduced (7): this pulse duration, intermediate between the
very short pulses (Q-switched regime, 10ns pulse duration) and very long pulses (Free
running regime, 500µs pulse duration) was proved to provide unique gradualness and
self-termination performances without damaging the stone substrate. This new SFR
system was massively applied in restoration works of historical façades (8) (9) (10), ancient
archaeological artworks (11) and stone reliefs (12) and Renaissance masterpieces such as the
Prophet Abacuc by Donatello, the Fonte Gaia in Siena by Jacopo della Quercia, panels of
the Giotto’s campanile in Florence and many other works. Most of the discussion, which
accompanied the early stage of laser cleaning application, concerning possible side effects due to laser irradiation of stones gradually reduced along the last decades thanks
to systematic phenomenological and process-optimization studies that allowed to define the operative fluence ranges ensuring effective discrimination between the layer to
be removed and the substrate underneath to be uncovered (13).
Furthermore, also the well-known problem of the yellowish appearance associated with
Q-switching Nd:YAG cleaning of white stones (14) has been thoroughly investigated (15) (16)
and practically solved. Some studies showed that this chromatic appearance was due

to the partial removal of pigmented stratifications and/or to penetration of organic substances through the outer layer of the stone.
The removal of alteration layers from stones can often be achieved by using the laser only
but in many cases the combination of the laser with traditional chemical or mechanical
methods may be needed or preferable. The laser cleaning of the capitals of both the Leaning Tower and the Cathedral in Pisa was performed after the imbibition of the black crust
in water for one night to soften the crust itself and make it easier to be removed by laser.
In general, the efficiency of the laser removal is increased if the surface to be treated is wet
with water before the irradiation. This wetting produces two main effects: a refractive and
an ablative one. The refractive effect leads to a decrease of reflectance for the wet sample,
due to a change in the refractive index between the material and the air (less radiation is
reflected away). Moreover, the voids in the material are filled and this causes a reduction
of the optical diffusion effect (higher penetration). On the other side, for the ablative effect the fast vaporization of water penetrating into microcracks speeds up the material
ejection.
In conclusion, the conservation of the monuments in Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa represented
one of the last successful application of laser cleaning for the removal of black crusts from
stone substrates. The optimization of the main laser parameters, supported by rigorous
scientific investigations, is of crucial importance to spread the use of this innovative technique in the world of conservation of Cultural Heritage.

ABSTRACT. Italy has historically spread worldwide its peculiar theories of restoration and conservation effectively guiding the international approach for preserving Cultural Heritage. Italy
has also exported its craftsmen, artists, architects and engineers over time to deal with the
most important monuments all over the World.
The Italian Restoration sector, substantially developed into an organic “industrial” system after the new Millennium, seems now ready to create its own strategies for promoting its model,
materials, technologies, enterprises, specialized design offices and service societies worldwide.
The conference aims to present some examples of international cooperation, focused on the
restoration design area, through the Internationalization Policies supported by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development (MISE) by its agency ICE-Italian Trade Promotion Agency and
through other models of international cooperation and autonomous experiences.
Some example of international projects carried out by ICE Agency and Assorestauro from 2013
to 2016 are presented together with the future target Countries. Delegates from North America,
South America, Iran and Lebanon has been invited to present the opportunities of increasing
the involvement of the Italian enterprises in their own markets.

ABSTRACT.The conference aims to study the large-scale topic of sustainability particularly focused on historical buildings, a particular framework in which the energy efficiency approach
needs to be harmonized with the historical assets and preservation priorities which characterize
the restoration area. Furthermore, the conference aims to introduce the requalification issues as
a clear opportunity for enhancing the efficacy of the preservation policies for the reuse of the
historical building heritage.
Within this complex framework, The Green Building Council Italy is elaborating a specific rating
system for the certification of historical buildings. The GBC Historic Building, the name used for
the new rating system, aims to tackle this specific area starting from the peculiar Italian sector
of the restoration of historical architectures, based on the most well-framed regulations and
the wider diffused Cultural Heritage in the World.
Specific Case Studies, related to the application of international standards, will be introduced:
LEED EBOM protocol, developed by the American Green Building Council especially for living
buildings and focused on the sustainability in terms of management and maintenance and
LEED C&S protocol, which deals with the building envelope in terms of heating and cooling systems, in addition to the GBC Historic Building protocol

Cà Foscari is the most ancient green building worldwide. LEED certification for the extant
buildings of the 16th century residence has actually drawn attention to a crucial issue for
Italy: the sustainable management of historical buildings. Green Building Council Italia
developed the first ad hoc tool to provide the guidelines and assess the policies aimed at
cutting the environmental impact of Italy’s historical heritage, while ensuring it remains
thoroughfully preserved: GBC Historic Building protocol.
FOSCARI PALACE: FROM DOGE’S RESIDENCE TO
UNIVERSITY HEADQUARTERS
For centuries, Ca’Foscari has enchanted illustrious figures, renowned artists and visitors
from all over the world. Its strategic and scenic location “facing the Canal” was one of the
reasons that inspired Doge Francesco Foscari, governor of the Serenissima who bestowed
his name upon the palace, to acquire the structure in 1452. He had it rebuilt according to architectural and stylistic criteria and rendered his home an extraordinary example of Venetian Gothic and a visual reference used as a guiding principle even in eras that followed.
From the building, one can enjoy a unique panorama that spans from the Rialto bridge to
the Accademia complex, exploited by artists throughout history to depict splendid vistas.
Its position of prevalence over the Grand Canal has made it the ideal pier for the awe-inspiring floating stage, dubbed the Machina, which hosts the officials and marks the finish
line for the Historical Regatta. Ca’ Foscari has always been the site where the winners of
the Regatta were awarded. The palace reveals fleeting but beautiful glimpses: the ancient
courtyard of Ca’ Giustinian with its outdoor staircase, the large courtyard inside Ca’ Foscari,
surrounded by stark enclosures, the visible stone walls of the wells which were so elaborately decorated, the Gothic arches which provide a framework for both the waterway and
land entrances along with the play of lightness and grace which characterize the majestic
exterior facing the Grand Canal. Between 2004 and 2006 the Ca’ Foscari-Ca’ Giustinian
complex underwent a painstaking restoration project (which won the prestigious Premio
Torta), a significant challenge for architects and planners who married the historical and
the modern all the while complying with the esteemed history of the structure and the heritage left by the work of Carlo Scarpa. In the 1930’s and the 1960’s, the renowned architect
and Venetian designer was called upon to restore the present day Aula Magna Mario Baratto and the surrounding spaces. Scarpa’s innovative restoration project enhances the architectural style of the 1400’s, creating a play of light, lines and volume which merge tradition
and modernity so beautifully. Inside the Aula Magna, there are two frescoes dating back to
the 1930’s: “Venezia, l’Italia e gli studi “ (Venice, Italy and Education) by Mario Sironi and
“La Scuola” (School) by Mario de Luigi. Both paintings clearly reflect the different meanings attributed to each painter’s vision of studies and cultural knowledge. Scarpa’s style
is evident throughout the building, even in the doors and windows of the main entrance,
the wall sconces on the ground floor and the silhouette of the hand railings of the cen-

tral staircase. Since 1868, the palace has been the main seat of the prestigious Ca’Foscari
University of Venice. It was founded by the noted economist Luigi Luzzatti as a Scuola Superiore di Commercio (Business College). The school emphasized not only the theory but
also the practical side oriented to the in-depth examination of economic material with the
purpose of supplying a specialized preparation to tradesmen and teachers. Right from the
beginning, the study of Oriental and Occidental languages was developed, reflecting the
multicultural vocation of the city on the lagoon. Currently, the university is structured into
four macro-areas – Economics, Linguistics, Humanities and Sciences – which offer a wide
range of choices of courses and research areas. Each year at Ca’Foscari University of Venice,
there are approximately 20.000 students enrolled, 1.000 teachers, researchers and technical administrative staff and 3.000 graduates. The use of the building as University premises implied that considerable energy and water resources would be used. For this reason,
the environmental and energetic performances of the building required to be improved, in
accordance with LEED EB:O&M sustainability protocol, which eventually turned Ca’ Foscari
into the most ancient green building worldwide. LEED EB: O&M certification, promoted by
the US Green Building Council, certifies the degree of sustainability of buildings related to
their operation, as well as to their management and maintenance. Water efficiency, supply drawn from renewable sources, green public procurement, sustainable mobility are all
the fields considered by the Green Building Council where Ca’ Foscari proved to meet the
requirements for certification. The virtuous management of plants and the sustainable
policies of the University have helped reach such an ambitious achievement.

WATER EFFICIENCY
The modifications made on water taps, toilet tanks and water diffusers have improved efficiency and reduced the amount of potable water from a reference baseline of 7074m3/
year to a rate of 5.106m3/year which is a reduction of 28%: the equivalent to the average
annual consumption of 31 residents in the province of Venice (Istat data).
ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND RENEWABLE ENERGY SUPPLIES
Ca’ Foscari adheres to the Consip agreement “Energia Elettrica 10” (Electric Energy 10)
which includes a specific Green Option, namely, 100% of electrical energy used for all the
branches of the university is generated from renewable resources. The energy planning
of the university already began for its other locations and involves the modernization of
the infrastructure design by means of the installation of new high efficiency heaters and
the maximization of the efficiency of the control center for these heaters. A continuous
monitoring system has been installed for the analysis of the consumption profile and to
identify specific strategies in the area of maintenance and servicing. In addition, viability
studies have been effected and geared towards the improvement of energy efficiency with
particular attention being paid to lighting, by means of substituting traditional light bulbs
with high efficiency lighting options.
GREEN PURCHASING
Currently at Ca’ Foscari, 60% of purchases are “green”, pertaining to both consumer
goods and stationery (paper, toner, batteries, etc.) as well as to durable goods for the
office (computers, printers, photocopiers and furniture. For example, an environmentally
conscious criteria has been introduced for the use of printers in order to reduce waste and
paper usage). The policy adopted by Ca’ Foscari has established an obligatory minimum
which is among the highest in Italy. The university is also dedicated to reducing amounts
of mercury by using high efficiency mercury free light bulbs for both interior and exterior
lighting. The aim of Ca’ Foscari is to have at least 90% of the light bulbs purchased respect the general limit of mercury content (not more than 90 picograms of mercury per
lumen-hour).

WASTE MANAGEMENT
Ca’ Foscari already adopted an experiment to implement differentiated waste collection
(RADICA project) before the LEED project. Some of the measures undertaken in this area include the substitution of printed questionnaires, which at Ca’ Foscari amounted to approximately 60.000 copies a year. Virtual assessments permitted an annual reduction of 300 kg
of paper. There was also the replacement of the traditional academic transcript with a digital
version. This process led to economic savings of 80.000 euro per year. Thanks to existing
administration policies and the implementation of Green Procurement at the Foscari Palace,
users will be able to differentiate 80% of the total volume/weight of waste produced by consumer goods. As for the lifespan of durable goods, Ca’ Foscari favors suppliers and products
that enforce a recycling program and re-use the parts of the equipment that still function.
LOW TOXICITY ENVIRONMENTALLY PREFERABLE CLEANING PRODUCTS
60% of the cleaning products used at a Ca’ Foscari is Ecolabel certified. Ecolabel is the European label attached to certain products or services which certifies they have a reduced environmental impact.
The results obtained with LEED certification for Cà Foscari show the potential for the energy
regeneration and, first and foremost, for the sustainable management of Italian historical
heritage. The vast Italian historical heritage includes buildings that would benefit from deep
regeneration; in fact, while preserving and making the most of their historical value, they
need to upgrade their sustainability to guarantee a more efficient usage, reduce management costs and ensure a longer duration of investments. To meet the need for this kind of
interventions, the first sustainability protocol specially conceived for historical buildings was
recently launched in Italy under the name of GBC Historic Building, developed by the Green
Council Building Italia (www.gbcitalia.org). This is an opportunity for universities, museums,
church buildings and public administration premises to help the environment, as well as
public finance, since savings could be allocated to other priorities. Today, these interventions
should be a priority, as, if they are cleverly run like in this case, they cost nothing or very little
and generate immediate payback.

THE TOWN HALL BUILDING IN SAN BENEDETTO PO (MN)
HISTORICAL NOTES
1852-54. The large building of the Town Hall was built during the second half of the 19th
century based on a design by engineer Camillo Cavo. The former complex was supposed
to house the “Imperial Regia Gendarmeria” (the Imperial Police station), the municipality
offices, the local prison, the school and the dwellings for the police commander, the school
teachers and the keepers.
1930. The huge original project remained unfinished and only the portion meant for the
town hall was eventually built. Records dating from 1930 are witness to the use of the
building and report some maintenance intervention on the rooftop.

1979/1990. During this period, extensive alterations were made to the internal layout
of the rooms and functions, along with a number of maintenance and restoration works,
including reparations of the rooftop, the consolidation and renewal of the floor slabs, and
a sizable intervention of roof waterproofing.
THE BUILDING
The Town Hall of San Benedetto Po is a typical nineteenth-century structure based on
solid brick masonry, which has been the object of several modifications over time. These
alterations turned the building into a complex and seismically vulnerable structure: during
the history of the building, some local rigid reinforcements, brick and concrete floors were
added, and the internal functional layout was changed. An earthquake in 2012 caused huge
damage to the structure, which imposed urgent restoration works in the entire complex.

THE INTERVENTIONS
The works not only implied damage reparations, but also the seismic rehabilitation and
protection of the original structure of the building. Special care was devoted to the extant
structures and to the whole masonry, based on a scientific survey of the structures. The interventions are disseminated throughout the complex, which is now an example of different approaches. The existing structures were consolidated, new strengthening elements
were added wherever necessary, chains were added and restraints reinforced, and wooden
reinforcing diaphragms were created below the roof without removing the top cover.
ENDOSCOPIC ANALYSIS OF MASONRY
The complexity of a building may be intrinsic in an apparently regular masonry and the
works may be hindered by the need to preserve decorations or fresco-painted walls. The
understanding of the quality of masonry is a key factor for planning seismic consolidation.
To this end, endoscopic analysis offers an extremely reliable tool to identify weak areas
that would be otherwise invisible (gaps, defective bedding, irregular brick pattern, core
walling, etc.).
STRUCTURAL CONSOLIDATION WORKS
A historical structure does not usually offer good box action, which makes it more vulnerable to damage owed to the separation between different structural elements. A modeling
of the building makes a basis to make hypotheses and reckon the reaction to seismic stress
mathematically.
The execution of a 3-D mathematical model of finite elements is implemented with a
number of possible solutions capable of preserving most of the original structure and, if

required, adding some elements. The works executed in the Town Hall included the following solutions, among others:
- introduction of horizontal metal chains across the building, at the vault extrados (areas
were emptied to make room for the works);
- construction of reinforced plaster wall. Clearly, the latter solution will not be viable in
valuable historical buildings, but here the 3-D study of box action was intersected with the
practical need to accomodate the offices in spaces of poor historical value. The benefits of
the solution lie in user-friendly and cost-effective works, which were carried out in the new
added elements only.
VAULT AND FLOOR CONSOLIDATION – DIFFERENT WORKS HELP
MAXIMIZE EFFICIENCY
The different elements of the building made the object of peculiar structural interventions
aimed at conservation and seismic consolidation. To this end, the maximum compatibility
of materials and the minimum impact on the valuable historic environment were the main
criteria adopted for the selection of the most viable solutions.
The tensile strength of the rooftop bearing structure was upgraded thanks to the introduction of wooden braces, which enhance the box action of the structure.
The vaulted elements were consolidated by applying two-directional carbon fibre meshes
glued with a pozzonala binder. The floors above them were built with a suspended double
wooden panel type X-lam, which makes a stiff and self-bearing structure.

FINISHES
The most precious elements of the building (cast plaster ornaments of ceilings and wooden floors) were made the object of rigorous restoration works.
In the rooms deprived of decorations and original elements, thin plasterboard walls were
built with a view to combining the need for structural consolidation with the energy and
functional requirements arising from their destination of usage (offices open to the public). These false walls allowed to hide the installations, and therefore avoid tracing the extant walls or building visible ducts, but also to provide efficient thermal insulation with the
help of mineral wool panels.
The existing frames of doors and windows (either old or damaged by the earthquake) were
replaced with new frames guaranteeing greater energy efficiency. The new outer frames
are made of wood, while the frames in the cloister are insulated iron profiles.
INSTALLATIONS AND IMPROVEMENT OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY (CLASS A/B)
The vertical ducts of all installations run outside the walls and inside the false plasterboard walls, so as to avoid any tracing or weakening of bearing elements.
The conditioning and air exchange happens through fan coils. The production of refrigerated water is ensured by a refrigerating unit located in the attic, fed by a well. The production of hot water for the central heating occurs via a substation connected to the municipal
heating network.
Furthermore, the Town Hall is provided with installations for fire-detection, break-in alarm,
video entryphone, structured cabling and video control.
Reduction of energy consumption up to 82% referring ot the previous asset and seismic
mitigation with an improvement up to 70%.
EXECUTION OF A WELL
A well provided with an underground electrical pump was excavated in the inner courtyard,
to feed the refrigerated unit. Advice by a geologist was seeked to determine the location of
the well, its depth, its flow rate and the difference in temperature between the inlet water
and outlet water. The integration of the well with the new installation machines helped
maximize the efficiency and yield of the whole structure.

ELECTROPHYSICAL DEHUMIDIFICATION OF MASONRY
Study of the efficacity of the method in the crypt of the
Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumptiuon in Cremona,
damaged by rising damp.
While in nature humidity plays an essential role for the growth and sustenance of life, if
in excess, for instance in buildings, it may be noxious and cause severe damage. In fact,
damage to plaster, salt efflorescence, stains and mold in the masonry of underground and
groundfloors are often the result of the so-called rising damp inside walls.
The crypt of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Cremona was affected by extensive damage caused by rising damp. The bishop of Cremona decided to choose among
various methods available in the market the most convenient solution to counter the problem in such a wide a complex. Any mechanical interventions implying that the wall masonry bottom would be removed and replaced with materials capable of preventing damp
from rising were discarded, as this method is likely to cause the structure to get damaged,

or even collapse or settle. Similarly, a chemical method whereby hydrophobizing substances are injected into the masonry to create a chemical barrier was rejected too, because the
intervention, with several bores being drilled, would be too invasive. The crypt walls are
made of marble, which excluded the chance of using any macroporous plasters, which feature high speed of evaporation and can rapidly absorb water from a wall and disperse it
into the air. However, while capable of temporarily solving the symptoms of moisture, this
method will not eradicate the problem.
In February 2013, the bishop of Cremona resolved to install Genié, a solution based on the innovative electrophysical dehumidification technology using “multiple frequency impulses”.
A study conducted by Luigi Soroldoni (scientific advisor for cultural heritage and professor at “Aldo Galli“ Academy in Como) and Umberto Casellato (former Associate Head of
Research with IDPA – CNR) demonstrated that the problem was eventually solved. After
12 months from the installation, moisture in the walls fell heavily, by as much as 70% in
some cases; after 16 months, the dehumidification process brought the rate of humidity of
masonry down to a range between 2% and 4% (physiological rate in masonry).
HOW GENIÉ WORKS
Genié generates an electromagnetic field inside the masonry, which interacts with the
water molecules and prevents them from rising. Unlike other similar methods, which use
monofrequency, Genié generates a train of impulses at different frequencies allowing to
obtain guaranteed results on all types of masonry, regardless of the shape of their capillary pores and of their composition. Genié is installed by fixing it with four standard screw
dowels and connecting it to a standard socket.
1_Because water molecules are bipolar, they are attracted by electric forces into microscopic canals, also known as capillary pores.
2_Each molecule of water found in the ground can therefore migrate upwards through the
capillary pores of the foundations into the walls of a building.
3_During its rise, water dissolves and carries with it any salts met on the way, which in turn
are one of the main causes of plaster degradation.
4_The rise stops along a “0 potential” line, where capillary adhesion and gravity get balanced.
Genié is available in 10 models with a different range, and in two
versions, Light and Pro. Genié is based on the innovative electrophysical
dehumidification technology using “multiple frequency impulses”.

The vast crypt, carved during the Romanesque era but restyled in 1606,
includes one nave and two aisles and preserves the tomb of Saints
Marcellinus and Peter, dating from 1506.

With a constant and targeted work, the installation brings the “0 potential” line down,
by pushing water back into the ground. This helps stop mold and avert all risk of masonry
degradation.
After the walls are rehabilitated, they can be brought back to their original state, with no
further risks of plaster damage, salt efflorescence, stains, mold, etc.
Genié is totally safe and can be used in any living environment, even with children, old people or sick people. In fact, Genié generates an electromagnetic field inside the masonry,
which does not interfere with human beings or with any electric or electronic appliances of
sorts, including medical and sanitary apparels.
METHOD OF STUDY OF THE EFFICIENCY
OF THE DEHUMIDIFICATION METHOD
Sampling was performed through measurements of the humidity (free water) content
with the thermo-gravimetric method, by calculating the weight balance after water was

eliminated by forced evaporation. Two samples of 3-5 g were collected in each examined
area, by using a core-drill (18-20 mm wide), of which one at a depth of 0-10 mm and one
at a depth of 50-150 mm, at floor level and at about 1.5 m above the floor, respectively.
The samples were weighed with precision scales (sensitivity of 1 mg), stored in special
glass containers and then put in a heater under controlled temperature (105° C) until they
reached a constant weight.
The balance between the initial weight and the post-drying weight expressed as a rate of
the dry material represents the value of humidity found in the sample.
To allow any future measurements after the dehumidification process or any further assessments, the wall was plugged with some specially conceived small cotto bricks, whose
water absorption capacity is similar to the old bricks, so that they may be removed with no
need for further core-drilling.
HUMIDITY MEASUREMENTS
In February 2013, before dehumidification works, the wall showed visible damage from
rising damp, and namely portions of plaster lifting and peeling off, and powdering of the
painted layers, which are all the result of water movements and, above all, of the exchanges with the inner environment during evaporation and condensation.

Overview of humidity
rates over time
The measurements proved that moisture was present along the north wall, with particularly high rates at floor level, both superficially and deep into the masonry (10-16%).
At about 1,5 m above the floor, the rate of humidity was normal for an underground environment (3-5% in areas A and B), but the rate grew inside the area C (14.%). The south
wall too at floor level featured high rates of humidity deeper into the masonry (8-9%)and
even at 1,5 m above the floor in the area E (8%).
After seven months of operation of Genié devices (1 device + 1 satellite installed on the
south and on the north wall, respectively) a general reduction in moisture was remarked,
with 30-40% falls in the dampest areas, both at floor level and at 1.5 m above the floor.
After one year, the walls looked positively drier, with a remarkable fall in rates (70%),
which reached the normal humidity levels of masonry. Some humidity (10-16%) was still
found in two out of 12 spots on the north wall.
After 16 months, the rates have stabilized at values of physiological humidity, except in
the area A, which still features some humidity both inside the masonry (12%) and on the
surface (8-9%). This may be due to microclimatic conditions and to the heavy content in
salts of this portion of masonry.
CONCLUSION
To conclude, after the installation of Genié devices, the conditions inside the crypt improved
sizably in general terms. The current stable conditions are confirmed by microclimatic data,
which show that the north wall is cooler especially during winter, but is generally more
prone to interstitial condensation in May and June, resulting in increased humidity inside
the masonry. This sensitivity to interstitial condensation and the salt content are therefore
the reason why moisture remains high in the area A, which will require a targeted intervention aimed at removing the salts.

CAPILLARY RISING DAMP
Capillary rising damp is due to several physical phenomena. Being present in any soil, even in deserts,
it is capable of permeating through the foundations
and penetrating the walls through the natural capillary action. Especially historic buildings often do not
have an adequate protection against capillary rising
damp.
Because they are dipolar, water molecules are
pushed, if immersed in an electromagnetic field,
from the negative pole (earth) upwards.
Water dissolves and carries the salts from the soil
and building materials; through the dissolved salts
water becomes conductive.
Along with the so-called “random molecular motion” (Robert Brown’s kinetic theory), alternating
forces are produced, which increase the effects of

rising damp when compared to what a pure capillary
action would be able to do.
DAMAGES CAUSED
BY CAPILLARY RISE DAMP
When dampness rises in the masonry, it causes serious damage to the walls, resulting in plaster detachment, salt efflorences and stains. Presence of dampnessi increase heat loss from the building and colder
masonry leading to condensation. Dampness also
provides fertile ground for mould, with serious consequences on the health of those who live in places
that are affected.
The damage can range from simple colds to allergies
and asthma, from gastrointestinal and dermatological diseases to the proliferation of mould spores in
the organism.

FOREWORD
The new expanded Museum of the Cathedral in Milan, inaugurated late in 2013, is the last
accomplishement by the Veneranda Fabbrica (the trust catering for the preservation and
maintenance of the Cathedral) in the conservation and enhancement of the sculptural
heritage of the Cathedral. The project engineering and realization implied the allocation of
considerable means and resources, which were however deemed necessary and inevitable
by the Board of Trustees to reach the ultimate goal of making the most of the artistic heritage they are responsible for. The large affluence of visitors (amounting to some 1,000 daily
during the Expo exhibition) is witness to the successful achievement of the intervention,
which involved the contribution of several historians and art experts, restorers, designers
and qualified workers. The creation of the new Museum also highlighted the peculiar character of the Cathedral System: a centuries-long bond between the Cathedral, the Fabbrica
and the Archives, as well as manual work excellence and the recourse to artistic expression as a natural communication medium. Sculpture remains a living thing and a privileged
form of expression, as witnessed by the recent temporary while stimulating exhibition of
some works of historic and contemporary art.

THE CATHEDRAL OF MILAN AND ITS CANDOGLIA MARBLE
Beside exhibiting extraordinary artefacts, the new Museum implicitly tells the story of the
construction of the cathedral and of its most important structural material, i.e. Candoglia
marble. The bond between the edifice and the material is stronger here than in most other
constructions. The exceptional aspect in the case of Milan Cathedral lies in the fact that
each block of Candoglia marble too has a special and very peculiar story to tell about its
geological characteristics, about the evolution of quarrying and working methods, about
its interaction with the environment and with other materials.
“...Nature...wished to leave a small mark, almost a thin cascade of the purest water, as the
quarry in Candoglia may appear at first sight, plunged in a dark and austere environment
(...) in the fairly barren valley of the Ossola”.
With these words, still suggestive and stimulating today, Carlo Ferrari da Passano described the beautiful quarry at the mouth of the Toce Valley fifty years ago. Candoglia marble is known to have been used since the Roman times, though for limited purposes. In
1386, the duke of Milan Gian Galeazzo Visconti started, with all the inhabitants of Milan,
the construction of the great Cathedral. The emissaries of the Veneranda Fabbrica, bearing
the Letters Patent now preserved in the archives of Milan, scanned the land of the Viscontis to its boundaries and eventually chose this rare saccharoid limestone as the material
of their liking. Since then and for some seven centuries uninterruptedly, all the marble extracted from Candoglia quarry was meant to adorn the Cathedral, but for few exceptions.
STATUARY AS A KEY ELEMENT IN THE DECORATION OF THE CATHEDRAL
“ In Gothic art, architecture and sculpture always live a happy marriage. This is all the more
true – and easily appreciated – in the Cathedral of Milan, which can be considered as a
unique and inimitable monumental sculpture, or rather an immense and complex architectural sculpture”. This elegant rhetorical statement opens a study on the sculpture of the
Cathedral by Ernesto Brivio, which continues: “ …The architecture of the Cathedral makes a
whole with its sculpture. You only need to make a small effort of imagination, remove from
the current view all sculpted elements, the ornamental statues as well as the elegant and
creative marble lace of rampant arches and “falconature”; then, you will obtain a humiliated architecture, to the point it gets poor, inexpressive or even erased, and what will be
left would be an unrecognizable, void and bleak container of a space far less charming than
this.” Without thinking too much about the very complicated issue of the artistic importance of the sculpted elements in the figurative system of the Cathedral, you will certainly
grasp the evident truth in Brivio’s words. All statues are made of this special material, Candoglia marble, which invariably stupefies the restorers who take care of the numerous
population of statues exposed to weathering. Consider, for instance, the basement section
of Saint Quintilian standing on top of the small spire named Gugliotto Pestagalli, shown
in Figure 1. All in all, the statue is not in bad conditions, although it is still the original one,
carved together with the spire in the mid 19th century. The statue, however, shows a deep
crack in the foot, which runs along the vein of the marble. Now consider the huge cost of
erecting a service scaffold to restore the spire (see Figure), mounted above the springer of
the dome cladding, that is, about 60 metres above the square. Clearly enough, the scaf-

fold cannot be kept there for long years, because of its cost. It is therefore urgent to make
a decision about the stability of the statue. After a careful study, seeking the advice of
restorers and of the qualified marble experts of the Fabbrica, as well as of the site manager
and foremen, the decision was taken to keep the statue in place and consolidate the basement with a number of convenient solutions. Decisions of this kind have been taken on a
daily basis in the centuries-long history of the Fabbrica. Statues have been often replaced,
when their own safety or the safety of their support could not be guaranteed. In these
cases, a statue is removed, brought in the Marble Yard and hand-copied by the sculptors
working for the Fabbrica, with the same skills of the craftsmen who have worked with this
method for six centuries and ensuring the consistency of a historical tradition handed over
to them. Nonetheless, constant efforts are made to improve the maintenance methods so
as to postpone or even avoid such extreme measures. The Politecnico University of Milan
frequently collaborates with the Fabbrica to develop these improvements. In particular,
the main façade, where restoration works have been recently completed, makes the object
of a special conservation research. Hence, the collection of the original statues or ancient
copies, removed from their original position over the centuries, makes quite a meaningful
number today; therefore, the Fabbrica decided it was time to improve their exhibition. This
is why the Museum of the Cathedral has been reorganized and almost doubled in space
since 2013, while being still accomodated in the groundfloor of the Royal Palace.
THE NEW MUSEUM OF THE CATHEDRAL
Since the late 2013, the New Large Museum of the Cathedral has allowed Milan citizens
(whom the Cathedral belongs to!) to enjoy the view of the stunning artefacts gathered
during seven centuries of history. The new exhibition itinerary is intended to tell the story
of the Cathedral while keeping the visitors’ attention high and stimulating their curiosity.
To this end, the character of the exhibition halls constantly changes, offering twists and
turns similarly to what happens in a drama plot, by growing or diminishing the number of
exhibits in the halls, alternatively enlarged or compressed in space, and enhanced or reduced in height. The rich collection of sculptures was disseminated in a chronological order
and mounted so as to evoke their original location on the high outer walls and spires, or on
the capitals inside the Cathedral. This way, while grouped together inside the Museum for
reasons of space, the statues stand out as individual exhibits, because they are set against
specially conceived backdrops to suggest their original location on top of buttresses and
pillars. The itinerary follows an orderly chronological criterion: the exhibition starts from
the statues of the first spire, named Guglia Carelli; goes through the 15th century sculptures of the Visconti and Sforza periods, with a break of intimate meditation offered by the
spiritual insight of the Borromeo family during the Spanish domination; continues with the
enthusiatic upswing of activity of the late 18th century; ends with the 19th century completion of the originally conceived cycle (the Heavenly Jerusalem, surrounded by Saints,
Prophets, Angels and Cherubs).
While the sculpture heritage still ornates the high walls of the Cathedral in the locations
assigned to them as the Cathedral kept evolving and completing, the Museum offers scholars and visitors alike the chance to enjoy a close view of the works of art. With the aim of
keeping alive the sensitivity to this artistic and expressive language, during the Universal
Exposition now approaching its end, the Veneranda Fabbrica thought it almost natural

to offer also the experience of different artefacts and set up the exhibition of some works
by contemporary artist Tony Gregg on the terraces of the Cathedral, as well as – with the
collaboration of the Opera della Cattedrale di Pisa – some works by Giovanni Pisano in the
Church of San Gottardo, i.e. the Palatine Chapel of the Royal Palace, which has been recently restored by the Veneranda Fabbrica. The itinerary of the new Museum is completed
with the exhibition of some original portions of the glass windows, though now reduced
to small bits, which are shown in continuity and backlit in a dark hall to reproduce the festive sumptuousness of colours and light they used to offer inside the Cathedral. Moreover,
tapestries were used to line the walls of two halls, not only to provide the softer illumination required for proper conservation, but also because the homogeneity of matter and
weaves arranged in continuous succession helps enjoy the tapestries individually. This way,
the precious exhibits of the “Treasury of the Cathedral” look as if they were into a shrine.
In such an intimate environment, the value of the objects gets ultimately enhanced, as
they are exhibited at different heigths depending on their original destinations of usage:
chalices, monstrances, processional crosses and flags, crosiers.

Focus on: The Museum of “Opera del Duomo” in Florence
The architectural
and installation project
THE PROJECT
The opportunity to work on the Opera Museum’s extension, after an initial project created
for a closed competition promoted by the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, arose in 2005
and continued in its project phases until the year 2009. It was an extremely important operation, given the need to double the surface area of the pre-existing museum and the
consequent opportunity to rework it entirely based upon the new exhibition requirements.
The works of the collection were of such significance as to require extraordinary planning.
This was compounded by their specific nature of works of sculpture, linked inseparably to
the architecture, partly as they originated from the very façades of the monuments and
partly as they were designed to adorn the interiors of the Cathedral and the Baptistry.

In 2012 they were supplemented, at the end of a complex restoration performed by the
Opificio delle Pietre Dure, by the famous Gates of Paradise, while the choice was made to
recover in the museum also the other two doors of the Baptistry, still to be restored.
The new museum architecture therefore set the difficult task of containing and enhancing works symbolic of the whole of Renaissance art, with the prohibitive desire to reconstruct a full-size model of the old façade of the Duomo, dismantled in 1587, to reposition
the fourteenth and fifteenth-century statues in their original locations. In this museum
intervention, the design of the architecture and the installation of the works were carried
out in a unitary and almost inextricable operation, given the Principal’s desire to entrust to
the same group of architects the different project interventions, starting with the general
building renovation and moving on to the most minute details of the installation. Based
upon the grandiose museum project prepared by Monsignor Timothy Verdon, it was thus
possible to rework the entire configuration of the museum and its parts, thanks also to the
contribution of top specialists in disciplines linked to construction and exhibition.

THE PRE-EXISTING MUSEUM
The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, after the renovation and museological reorganisation
in 1998-99, designed by the architects Luigi Zangheri and David Palterer, was split into
three above-ground levels, in addition to the basement which only accommodated the
plant rooms. The indoor courtyard with lifts and staircases was the main connection point,
alongside the historic large staircase linking the ground floor with the first floor.
Through a connecting room, you reached the Sala dell’Antica Facciata which, built to plans
by Castellucci in the Thirties of the twentieth-century, housed some masterpieces of Gothic and Renaissance sculpture. The mezzanine floor was only home to the Sala della Pietà,
the positioning of which had the advantage of giving great visibility to the sculpture by
Michelangelo, but it was completely inadequate from a size perspective.
The flaw of the old museum was essentially the absence of any display logic in the succession of works, positioned in the various halls on the basis of their gradual accumulation,
following the numerous extensions.

THE PREMISES OF THE FORMER GARAGE OF THE DUOMO
In 1999 the Opera del Duomo di Santa Maria del Fiore purchased the premises of the former garage of the Duomo adjacent to the museum, arranged over a surface area of 1,950
sq m, mostly distributed in the large volume once occupied by the Teatro degli Intrepidi.
The Theatre environment, after the transformations from 1914 onwards, was, before the
works, similar to an industrial outbuilding in the heart of Florence. The volume, altered several times over the last century, lacked valuable characteristics in terms of its architectural
elements or in its finishes; the hall and the gallery had cement flooring.

Inside the complex, interventions were carried out in different ways depending on the various parts. As part of the restoration and structural consolidation, the spaces of the former
garage were redeveloped: new structures organised the internal distribution system, creating galleries and levels. Two new compartmentalised staircases were added to the historical large stairway with the aim of improving the distribution of the museum’s accesses
and escape routes. The roof of the great hall was completely rebuilt, with a mesh metal
structure, equipped with a skylight on the side facing north-east. The intermediate arm
between the existing museum and the volume of the former garage was redeveloped and
reorganised so as to create from it a large linear gallery. By re-composing the pre-existing
volumes and increasing the height, a new level was created overlapping the former Sala di
Bonifacio VIII and the side rooms of the former garage. In the rest of the existing museum,
the interventions were limited to the bare essentials, without seeking to erase the design
layers that had been added over time, from the museum creation in the late nineteenthcentury to the subsequent twentieth-century interventions.

THE SERVICE AREAS
The service areas are, for any museum, the functional heart of the building that allow for the
correct running of exhibitions and the museum as a whole.
In the Opera Museum, the service areas are now gathered together into some main groups: the
services unit at the entrance, the services unit in the basement, the services unit in the shared
courtyard with the section for temporary exhibitions, the offices unit, the new teaching workshops unit and the indoor plant rooms unit.
Putting into figures the project operation, the useful surface area increased from the previous
2,432 sq m to the 5,882 sq m of the new museum, amounting to a volume of 32,025 metres
cubed. The gross surface area of the complex now amounts to approximately 7,000 sq m, along
with 400 sq m of internal courtyards and terraces. The permanent exhibition surface area increased from 1,127 sq m to 2,534 sq m, and it displays 750 works of art.

Il Gruppo El.En., fondato nel 1981, è stato il primo in Italia ad aver sviluppato, nella prima metà degli anni ’90, sistemi laser per le applicazioni nella conservazione dei Beni Culturali. Dal 2005 l’attività di El.En. si è integrata con

Ranging) per il monitoraggio in remoto di monumenti e diagnostica composizionale della carta. L’Actis, società
del Gruppo El.En. , ha messo a punto e detiene il brevetto della Black Box per l’arte, dispositivo per il monitoraggio
del trasporto delle opere d’arte. I campi di applicazione della strumentazione laser sono la pulitura di manufatti
artistici, monumenti e edifici storici, potendo operare su supporti lapidei, stucchi, superfici affrescate, metalli di
cui in particolare bronzo e bronzo dorato, argenti e oreficerie, manufatti in legno anche dipinto. I sistemi laser del
Gruppo El.En. sono presenti in numerosi laboratori europei e nel mondo e sono stati utilizzati o vengono adesso

L’Associazione Italiana per il Patrimonio Archeologico Industriale (AIPAI), la sola operante in
quest’ambito a livello nazionale, è stata fondata nel 1997 da un gruppo di specialisti del patrimonio
industriale e da alcune tra le più importanti istituzioni del settore del Paese. L’AIPAI, articolata in
sezioni regionali e commissioni di settore nazionali, conta oggi oltre 300 soci attivi e interagisce proficuamente con università, centri di ricerca, fondazioni, musei, organi centrali e periferici dello Stato
(Ministeri, Soprintendenze, Regioni, Province, Comuni, Comunità montane, Agenzie di promozione
turistica e di sviluppo, ecc.). L’Associazione ha firmato nel 2008 un protocollo d’intesa con il TICCIH
(The International Commettee for the Conservation of Industrial Heritage) che la riconosce come

The Italian Association for Industrial Archaeological Heritage, the only one of its kind in Italy, was
founded in 1997 by a group of industrial heritage experts and some of the most important Italian
institutions in this field. It has over 300 members working in its regional sections spread all over the
country and it cooperates with universities, research centres, institutions, museums, central and
local State bodies (Ministries, Superintendencies, Regional and Provincial Authorities, Municipalities, Mountain Communities, Agencies for the promotion of tourism and local development, etc.).

COME SVOLGE ASSORESTAURO LA PROPRIA ATTIVITA’ ?
L’attività promozionale e di internazionalizzazione svolta da Assorestauro in rappresentanza delle proprie aziende associate e del comparto del
restauro avviene attraverso molteplici azioni di coordinamento che trovano la loro rappresentazione nella pubblicazione dei QA_QUADERNI DI
ASSORESTARO e nella comunicazione attraverso il sito internet.
I QA, QUADERNI DI ASSORESTAURO sono la rivista ufficiale dell’Associazione e presentano i cantieri, i progetti e le attività svolte dai soci nell’ambito di specifici progetti. Se fino ad ora la loro pubblicazione è sempre
stata legata a specifiche iniziative, spesso internazionali, la programmazione futura, anche in virtù dell’assegnazione di un codice ISSN dal 2016,
prevede la pubblicazione di ulteriori numeri focalizzati su temi del settore
con taglio istituzionale e/o carattere scientifico scaturiti dalla raccolta dei
numerosi contributi di valore culturale e scientifico presentati nell’ambito
di occasioni formative e convegnistiche organizzate nel corso dell’anno.
Ai Quaderni di Assorestauro si affianca l’attività di comunicazione svolta
dal sito internet dell’associazione (www.assorestauro.org) totalmente
rinnovato nel corso del 2015. Disponibile in lingua italiana e in versione
inglese, il sito assolve all’importante compito di veicolare le attività associative in fase di svolgimento ad un ampio pubblico di utenti frequentatori del sito e, contemporaneamente, svolge attività di comunicazione
diretta tra Associazione ed Aziende associate attraverso un apposito canale che consente la consultazione dei suoi contenuti su un piano pubblico ed un secondo piano riservato. In continuo aggiornamento ed ampliamento, il sito internet ha l’obiettivo di raccogliere e presentare in forma
sintetica le attività dell’Associazione svolte a partire dal 2005, anno della
sua fondazione.
HOW DOES ASSORESTAURO WORK?
The promotional and internationalization activities developed by
Assorestauro in the interest of its member companies and of the
restoration sector consist of a number of actions of coordination, including the publication of the QA_QUADERNI DI ASSORESTARO and
communication via website.
The QA are the Association’s official magazine, which offers coverage
of ongoing sites, projects and activities developed by the members
within special projects. While to date the magazine has been issued
for special initiatives, often held at international level, starting from
2016 – when an ISSN code was finally assigned to the magazine –
further issues will be published to cover some relevant topics for the
sector. With an institutional and/or scientific approach, these issues
will collect the numerous contributions of cultural and scientific value
presented during training actions and conferences held throughout
the year.
In addition to the publication of QA, Assorestauro also develops communication activities through its website (www.assorestauro.org),
which was totally restyled in 2015. Available in Italian and English,
the website plays the important role of diffusing the Association’s
ongoing activities to a wide public of users and, at the same time, ensures direct communication between the Association and its members through a special section allowing to surf the contents both
publicly and through access to a reserved area. Constantly updated
and extended, the website is aimed at collecting and presenting in
an abridged form the activities carried out by the Association since
2005, the year of its establishment.

SCUOLA ITALO-RUSSA
TURCHIA. Il progetto Med Art 2 nasce quale naturale proseguimento della
cooperazione tra VGM (T.R. Prime Ministry Directorata General of Foundations)
e Assorestauro in tema di restauro dei beni culturali, prima con il progetto Med
Art “Transnational Cooperation for Cultural Heritage Preservation” (20122013) e poi con Med Art Follow Up (2013-2014), finalizzato alla realizzazione
del restauro della Moschea Sheik Suleyman ad Istanbul attualmente conclusa.
Il progetto, finanziato dalla Regione Emilia Romagna, è focalizzato sul tema
del consolidamento ed il rinforzo antisismico di edifici storici e prevede attività promozionali per le aziende italiane in territorio turco e attività di approfondimento in Italia. In particolare, il progetto si è sviluppato attraverso:
- attività promozionali e di follow up commerciale in Turchia (2013 - 2015); workshop e conferenze in Italia (ottobre 2015); - traduzione delle Linee Guida
per la valutazione e mitigazione del rischio sismico per i beni culturali in lingua
turca, attualmente in corso; - conferenza conclusiva a Istanbul (in previsione
per settembre 2016).

Foundations) and Assorestauro in the area of the restoration of cultural heritage first with the project Med Art “Transnational Cooperation
for Cultural Heritage Preservation” (2012- 2013) and then with Med Art
Follow Up (2013-2014), aimed at executing the restoration of Sheik Suleyman Mosque in Istanbul, now completed.
The project, sponsored by Regione Emilia Romagna, is focused on the
consolidation and antiseismic reinforcement of historic buildings and
encompasses promotional activities for the Italian companies in Turkey
and workshops in Italy. In detail, the main issues of the project are as
follows: - promotion and commercial follow up in Turkey (2013 - 2015);
- workshop and conferences in Italy (October 2015); - Turkish translation of the Guidelines for the assessment and mitigation of seismic risk
in cultural heritage; - final conference in Istanbul (due in September
2016).
OTHER INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS. In addition to the projects described above, some cooperation actions are currently being organized
at international level, for instance with Canada and Iran.
ALTRI PROGETTI INTERNAZIONALI. In aggiunta ai progetti sopradescritti,
sul piano internazionale sono attualmente in fase organizzativa alcune attività di cooperazione con paesi quali il Canada e l’Iran.
RUSSIA. Italian-Russian School. Training programme for 45 Russian professionals from the FGUP CNRPM (Central Scientific Research
Project Workshops), and other state or private institutions, coming from
all the territory of the Russian Federation, in compliance with the dispositions of a joint protocol signed by Assorestauro - FGUP CNRPM and
the Post-Graduate School for Architectural and Landscape Heritage of
UNIROMA-La Sapienza University, sponsored by ICE.
The project included 7 training sessions, as follows: 6 sessions in Moscow
held by teachers from the Post-Graduate School, Russian teachers and
members of Assorestauro; 1 two-week training session in Italy, of which
3 days were held at the school and the remaining days at the sites/
monuments presented by the businesses members of Assorestauro.
After the project activities ended in June 2014, the school proceedings
were published as a book in English and Russian, whose digital version
preview was presented during the Restoration Exhibition of Ferrara
2015. The book, which includes the most important contributions in
both English and Russian (one of very few works of this kind), will be
officially presented at the Restoration Exhibition of Ferrara in 2016.
RUSSIA. Scuola del restauro - Progetto di formazione dedicato a 45 professionisti russi del FGUP CNRPM (Central Scientific Research Project Workshops), ed altri enti statali o privati, provenienti da tutto il territorio della
Federazione Russa, secondo quanto stabilito da un protocollo congiunto tra
Assorestauro - FGUP CNRPM e Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni Architettonici e del Paesaggio di UNIROMA-La Sapienza e con finanziamento ICE.
Il progetto ha previsto 7 sessioni formative: 6 sessioni a Mosca suddivise tra docenti della scuola di specializzazione, docenti russi ed aziende di Assorestauro; 1 sessione formativa di due settimane in Italia, di cui 3 giornate presso la scuola e le restanti giornate
presso cantieri/monumenti presentati dalle aziende di Assorestauro.
A conclusione delle attività di progetto nel giugno 2014 sono stati pubblicati
gli atti della scuola in lingua inglese e russa, con un’anteprima della versione
digitale durante la Fiera del Restauro di Ferrara 2015. La stampa del volume,
che riporta i maggiori contributi e realizzato in versione bilingue inglese-russo
(una delle pochissime opere del genere disponibili), viene ufficialmente presentato in Italia in occasione di Restauro 2016 a Ferrara.

Ulteriori workshop internazionali, su cofinanziamento ICE, sono svolti annualmente nell’ambito di programmi di cooperazione internazionale con
paesi interlocutori selezionati.
LIBANO. L’iniziativa in Libano, che ICE organizza in collaborazione
con Assorestauro, è rivolta ad Aziende associate e non associate e prevede seminari formativi/commerciali dedicati ad operatori specializzati
nel settore del restauro. In particolare, essa si articola in un workshop e
successivi B2B su alcuni temi specifici con attenzione alla conservazione
dell’architettura urbana in termini strutturali e di consolidamento, metodi
di conservazione delle superfici, prodotti e materiali a base di calce per il
restauro.
CUBA. Il progetto, nato con una missione organizzata da ICE nel
2009, si è sviluppato nel tempo su due differenti filoni di lavoro rispettivamente in Italia a e Cuba.
Il programma di cooperazione con l’Istituto Italo Latino Americano
(IILA) si iscrive nell’ambito delle molteplici e rilevanti attività di formazione, assistenza tecnica e rafforzamento istituzionale in diversi settori
associati alla conservazione e alla tutela dei beni culturali, che l’IILA con
il supporto italiano, sta da diversi anni portando avanti in tutta l’America Latina; nel mese di novembre 2015 lo “Stage per Conservatori Cubani
dei beni Culturali”, organizzato da IILA, finanziato dal MISE ed attuato
in collaborazione con ICE_Agenzia, ha visto Assorestauro sviluppare un
programma tecnico pratico in collaborazione con le Aziende associate con un focus sui temi del _Restauro e gestione di grandi complessi
monumentali (Milano), _Restauro specialistico di superfici (Bologna,
Ravenna), _Adeguamento sismico degli edifici storici e ricostruzione
(L’Aquila).
A Cuba, invece, la firma del Memorandum fra Eusebio Leal, Historiador
de la Ciudad de La Habana, per il Governo Cubano e Carlo Calenda, Viceministro MISE, per il Governo Italiano, alla presenza del Presidente del
Consiglio Matteo Renzi (ottobre 2015) è l’atto istituzionale ha costituito
il primo passaggio formale per la realizzazione di un Centro Tecnologico
italiano a Cuba sul Restauro ed il Design da realizzare nel corso del 2016
in collaborazione con ICE_Agenzia per la promozione all’estero e l’internazionalizzazione delle imprese italiane e con una attività di scambio
tecnologico e di cooperazione con durata di circa due anni.
LIBANO
LEBANON. The initiative in Lebanon organized by ICE in collaboration
with Assorestauro, involves both Assorestauro members and non-members
and includes training and trading seminars addressed to operators specializing in restoration. In particular, the action includes a workshop followed by
B2B encounters concerning some special topics related to the conservation
of urban architecture: structural conservation and consolidation methods;
methods for the conservation of finishes; lime-based products and materials for restoration.
CUBA. The project was launched with a mission organized by ICE in
2009 and was followed by two separate work activities held in Italy and
Cuba, respectively.
The cooperation programme with the Istituto Italo Latino Americano (IILA)
falls in the frame of several important activities of training, technical assistance and institutional growth held by ILLA with Italy’s support in various
sectors connected to the conservation and protection of cultural heritage
in Latin America. In november 2015 a course named “Stage for Cuban Conservators of Cultural Heritage” was organized by IILA and sponsored by the
Italian Ministry for Economic Development (MISE) and realized in partnership with the Agency for the promotion abroad and the internationalization of Italian businesses (ITA). In the course, Assorestauro catered for the
development of a practical technical programme in collaboration with its
members, with a focus on the topics of _Restoration and Management of
large monumental compounds (Milan), _Specialized restoration of finishes
(Bologna, Ravenna), _Seismic rehabilitation of historic buildings and reconstruction (L’Aquila).
In Cuba, the Memorandum was signed by Mr. Eusebio Leal, Historiador de la
Ciudad de La Habana, for the Government of Cuba, and by Mr. Carlo Calenda, the Vice-Minister of MISE, for the Italian Government, before the Italian
Prime Minister Mr. Matteo Renzi, on 28th October 2015. This institutional
document makes the first formal step for an Italian Technology Centre of
Restoration and Design in Cuba to be established during 2016 in partnership with the Agency for the promotion abroad and the internationalization of Italian businesses (ITA) and with an action of know-how exchange
and cooperation for at least the next two years.
TURKEY. The Med Art2 project is the natural continuation of a cooperation started between VGM (T.R. Prime Ministry Directorate General of

ICE WORKSHOP. This training activity is held yearly by Assorestauro on
behalf of ICE, aimed at promoting the internationalization of Italian businesses by providing coordination and the scientific management of the
‘Course in Italy for foreign operators specializing in the restoration sector’.
Participants come from countries of primary interest for the market of the
conservation sector. The Workshop, traditionally held at the same time as
the Restoration Exhibition in Ferrara, deals with a special topic each year.
The title of the 2016 workshop is ‘Restoration of Architecture: comparing
methods’, with the participation of Turkey, Russia, etc. Other international
workshops cosponsored by ICE are held annually within the frame of international cooperation programmes with selected countries.
WORKSHOP ICE. Attività di formazione con cadenza annuale svolta da
Assorestauro su incarico di ICE e finalizzata alla promozione all’estero e
all’internazionalizzazione delle imprese italiane attraverso azioni di coordinamento e di gestione scientifica del ‘Corso in Italia dedicato ad operatori
esteri specializzati nel settore del restauro’ e provenienti da paesi di primario interesse per il mercato del comparto della conservazione. Il Workshop,
che si svolge tradizionalmente in contemporanea alla Fiera del Restauro
di Ferrara, si sviluppa ogni anno intorno ad un tema specifico. ‘Restauro
dell’Architettura: metodologie a confronto’ è il titolo dell’edizione 2016 che
vede il coinvolgimento di paesi quali Turchia, Russia, Cuba, Iran, Libano,
Messico, Perù, Cile, Brasile, Usa, Canada, Ucraina, Kosovo/Armenia.
TRAINING IN ITALY. At national level, Assorestauro is currently organizing some conferences and training actions. In particular, two conferences
are scheduled during the Restoration Exhibition, with participants earning
CPE credits, dedicated to internationalization “Planning restoration: internationalization policies for the restoration sector” and to the GBC protocol “Sustainability of historic building: the GBC Historic Building protocol”.
In 2016, the Association also signed a convention with the University of
Bergamo and the University of Salento to start working together on educational actions and on a programme of training initiatives to be held in
collaboration with the Roll of Architects of Florence.
FORMAZIONE IN ITALIA. Sul piano nazionale l’Associazione è attualmente attiva sul piano delle attività convegnistiche e formative. In particolare,
due convegni sono in programma nel corso della Fiera del Restauro, con riconoscimento di CFP, dedicati rispettivamente al tema dell’internazionalizzazione “Progettare il restauro: politiche di internazionalizzazione per il settore
restauro” e al protocollo GBC “La sostenibilità negli edifici storici: il protocollo
GBC Historic Building”.
Il 2016, inoltre, vede la nascita di attività di sinergia con l’Università di Bergamo e l’Università del Salento, con le quali è stata attivata una convenzione
finalizzata ad azioni didattiche e di sinergia, oltre ad un programma di attività
formative da svolgere in collaborazione con l’Ordine degli Architetti di Firenze.
The majority of the projects promoted by Assorestauro are developed
over several calendar years. Cooperation with foreign countries evolves
through preliminary exploratory steps prior to implementing more concrete opportunities of collaboration aimed at exporting the Italian restoration sector. Some significant examples of ongoing international projects

servizi di informazione, assistenza, consulenza e formazione sia direttamente,
sia attraverso i propri partner, al fine di dare coerenza e unitarietà di indirizzo
alle diverse anime del settore sia a livello nazionale che internazionale.
Come Associazione di Categoria Nazionale per il comparto del Restauro, Assorestauro coordina, tutela e promuove gli interessi del settore produttivo di
competenza e rappresenta, in Italia ed all’Estero, le posizioni comuni sul piano tecnico, economico e di immagine attraverso attività mirate nell’ambito
degli obiettivi di inquadramento di comparto, informazione e comunicazione,
tutela degli interessi (sui piani economico, dell’immagine, dell’evoluzione normativa del Settore) ricerca e sviluppo, promozione.
Established in 2005 as the first Italian association of manufacturers of
materials, equipment and technology, suppliers of services and specialized
companies, Assorestauro represents the Italian sector of restoration and
conservation of material heritage. To date, it is the sole association and a
reference in the domestic and international market for anyone willing to
start working in the conservation sector in Italy, to be intended in its broadest sense, that is, as a synthesis of the various disciplines involved, of the
professional specialists, of the available technology and of the growing business community. If examined as a whole, the sector accounts for a large
market share and has a meaningful impact on tourism, industry and bioconstruction.

tecnologie, e i fornitori di servizi e imprese specializzate, nata nel 2005 per
rappresentare il comparto nazionale del restauro e della conservazione del
patrimonio materiale. Assorestauro è il punto di riferimento sia nazionale sia
internazionale per chi voglia affacciarsi al mondo della conservazione italiana, intesa nel modo più ampio possibile, come sintesi delle svariate discipline
che in esso convergono, delle professionalità specializzate, delle tecnologie
e della crescente imprenditorialità. Un comparto che, se analizzato nel suo
complesso, rappresenta una forte componente di mercato ed ha importanti
ricadute nel settore turistico, dell’industria e del bio/edile.
QUALI SONO GLI OBIETTIVI DI ASSORESTAURO ?
COSA FA ASSORESTAURO ?
le finalità associative si esplicitano attraverso molteplici attività che promuovono le professionalità nel settore del restauro, dalla fase diagnostica e progettuale a quella dell’esecuzione in cantiere, passando per la produzione di
tecnologie e materiali, anche con forti connotazioni tecnologiche innovative,
e con il supporto di Istituzioni, Università, Organismi di Tutela dei Beni Culturali e ICE Agenzia per la promozione all’estero e l’internazionalizzazione delle
imprese italiane.
Rientrano in questa tipologia di azioni sia attività promozionali nazionali
(convegni e seminari formativi, fiere di settore, corsi e similari) sia iniziative
Assorestauro is the National Trade Association for the Restoration Sector,
representing manufacturers of materials, equipment, technology, specialist companies, designers and suppliers of services for analyses, surveys and
diffusion. The Association offers its members information, assistance, advice
and training both directly and through its partners, with a view to building a
consistent and unitary orientation to the different sectors of the restoration
industry at national and international level.
As a national association, Assorestauro is aimed at coordinating, protecting
and promoting the interests of the restoration sector and it represents before the outer market, in Italy and abroad, the common positions for technical
and economic issues, as well as image, by carrying out targeted activities
in such relevant fields of the sector as information and communication,
protection of common interests (economy, image, standards), research and
development, promotion.
WHAT DOES ASSORESTAURO DO ?
Several activities aimed at promoting the professional skills in the restoration sector fall in the scopes of the Association. They include diagnostic
analysis, design and on site execution, producing technology and materials,
as well as contributing technological innovation, with the support of Institutions, Universities, Agencies for the protection of cultural heritage and ICE,
the Agency for the internationalization and the promotion abroad of Italian
businesses. This type of action includes both promotion in Italy (conferen-
