Mission Brief's Hambletonian Status Could
Hinge on Performance in Del Miller
By Bill Finley
Ron Burke still believes that at 100 percent Mission Brief
would win the Hambletonian. He just doesn't know if he
can have her at 100 percent on that afternoon.
But Burke will likely get some answers tomorrow night at
the Meadowlands when the daughter of Muscle Hill meets
seven others in the $187,000 Delvin Miller Memorial,
where she will be the
heavy favorite in a race
restricted to fillies.
"I will have a better
idea about things after
this race.," Burke said. "I
think I'm going to the
(July 26) Zweig (for fillies)
Mission Brief is 50-50 for the
with her. I don't see any
Hambletonian (Lisa photo)
reason not to. It gives me
another race. She's only had two starts this year, so it's not
like I've killed her. The Zweig has a good purse and I like
going to Vernon."
Though Mission Brief is 2 for 2 on the year, she has been
battling back problems that Burke says have kept her from
performing at her very best. W ith that in mind, he now says
she is "50-50" to go in the Hambletonian instead of the
Hambletonian Oaks.
He's been encouraged by what he has seen from the filly
this week and is optimistic she'll deliver a top effort in the
Del Miller.
"She was vicious W ednesday morning training.," he said.
"Am I 100 percent sure she's fine? No. But she definitely
has improved."
Burke said the back issues have been a lingering
problem that just won’t go away.
"I am not sure her back is 100 percent yet," he said. "If I
knew her back was going to be 100 percent I would have
all the confidence in the world in her. She's as good as
any horse I've ever had...probably better. But if you've
ever had a bad back you know how it makes everything
you do difficult. She just ended up having a bad back. It
started with little things and got worse. She had back
spasms and that led to other issues. It's a struggle right
now. That's why my confidence has been shaken. This is a
business. If I have to go in the Hambletonian Oaks that's
still for $750,000. There's nothing wrong with that race. If
she's at 90 percent I think she could win the Hambletonian
Oaks. She's a special horse. She's not normal."
Burke will also be keeping an eye on his 3-year-old male
trotters who will be going in the Stanley Dancer tomorrow
night at the Meadowlands. The better of the two appears to
be Crazy W ow, who drew post one for the fourth race. The
problem is he is not Hambletonian eligible.
"Crazy W ow, I love him," the trainer said. "I expect a big
effort out of him Saturday. If Crazy W ow were eligible for
the Hambletonian it would make my decision on Mission
Brief a lot easier because I believe he can trot with anyone."
Burke will send out Habitat in the first of the two divisions
for the Dancer, which is the second race on the card.
Habitat is eligible for the Hambletonian.
I don't know if he can trot fast enough to beat the top, top
colts," Burke said. "It's a shame because he's a very good
horse but you need a great horse to win the Hambletonian."
The Stanley Dancer divisions will likely clear up the
picture for the Hambletonian, which has long looked like a
case of Mission Brief versus Jimmy Takter. The latter is
loaded with 3-year-old male trotting talent and will send out
five of the 13 starters between the two Dancer legs.
His best shot at the sport's biggest trotting prize, the
Hambletonian, seems to be with Pinkman, who won the
Beal last out by a head. He has been beaten just once this
year in five starts.
"He came out of that race fantastic," Takter said. "He's
feeling great. He's always a contender. He's probably the
most consistent of my 3-year-olds."
Pinkman wound up in the same Dancer division as

stablemate Canepa Hanover, who broke stride as the 2-5
favorite last out in the June 20 Goodtimes at Mohawk.
French Laundry also broke in that race. Neither has started
since.
"Those two horses haven't raced in a month, which is a
little bit by design," Takter said. "It's a long season and
they might not be as sharp as I am hoping for. Both trained
in 55 two weeks ago at my farm. They're still top players. I
don't know what happened in the Goodtimes). It was just
one of those things. I had a horrible night up there.
Sometimes you get nights like that."
Takter will also send out The Bank and W hom Shall I
Fear in the Dancer. Both landed in the same division as
French Laundry.

Tetrick Likely to Drive in Inter Dominion
Tim Tetrick has been invited to drive in Australia this
December and has set his sights on competing in the Inter
Dominion. The Inter Dominio, to be held this year on Dec.
13 at Gloucester Park in Perth, Australia, is considered one
of the world's premier harness racing events.
"The people from Gloucester Park asked me if I would
come back over and participate in a few driving challenges
and, hopefully, pick up something in the Inter Dominion,” he
said. “I don't have a drive yet, but I know they're going to try
to get me something to drive so I can have one in that
race."
Tetrick visited Australia in 2014 to compete in the W orld
Driver's Championship.

meet some really cool people and I am excited to go back,"
he said. "It's a great week to be over there because it's
such a big race. I'd want to be over there for it even if I
didn't have one to drive."
Tetrick said he expects to be in Australia for about two
weeks.
Alagna Hoping Change in Training Tactics Will
Bring Out Best in Artspeak
By Bill Finley
Tony Alagna admits Artspeak was "a little dull" in the
elims for the Crawford Farms Meadowlands Pace, so he
went back to the drawing board. Instead of cracking down
on the W estern Ideal colt and
pushing him, Alagna decided to go
easy on his 3-year-old this week.
He hopes the soft touch will bring
out the best in a colt coming off a
fourth-place finish as the 1-2
favorite.
"I just think he wasn't on top of
his game that night," Alagna said.
"I think those starts at Pocono took
a lot out of him. He left hard both
Tony Alagna took it
easy on Artspeak this weeks (in the Hempt and the
week. Will it pay off in Hempt elims). Although he was
second to W iggle It Jiggleit I think

it took a lot out of him that night (in

the final).
"This week when I took him home I decided to totally
change his routine. I know that he is plenty fit, so I just
concentrated on doing a lot of long miles and jogging. No
serious training. Today I saw him really start to respond to
it. He seemed really fresh. W hen I took him out to grass
him after jogging he was his usual self. He's been
brightening up through the week and hopefully he shows
that Saturday night."
Alagna said it's a tactic he has used before with success.
"Every now and then you get a horse that, at this point in
the season, is as fit as they can be, and you need to do
something different, change their routine to try to freshen
them up a little bit. W ith as many weeks in a row that they
are racing this time of year all these horses are fit. It's just
a matter if a horse is telling you he's had enough and
wants you to go the other way. It's a matter of reading your
horse."
But even if Alagna has Artspeak ready for a top effort
that may not be good enough to beat Wiggle It Jiggleit,
who has looked terrific since his loss in the North America
Cup and will be a heavy favorite Saturday night.
"Absolutely, he's going to have to be at his very best (to
beat W iggle It Jiggleit)," Alagna said. Just two weeks ago
he was second to him in the Hempt. That night we scoped
him and he bled and the other night I just don't think he
was on top of his game. But any horse is going to have to
be on top of his game to win this race."
Alagna will also send out Revenge Shark, who figures to
be one of the longer shots in the field. He finished fifth last
week in his Pace elim, which was won by In The Arsenal.
He won the Pace in 2013 with Captaintreacherous.
Reputed Mobster Carmine Agnello Busted in
Cleveland, Charges Include Doping of Race
Horses
Carmine Agnello, the former son-in-law of John Gotti and
a one-time licensed harness owner, was arrested
W ednesday in Cleveland for
allegedly running a $3 million
scam where cars were stolen
and then sold for scrap metal.
He faces charges of theft,
money laundering, conspiracy
and corrupting sports.
In what could turn into an
explosive story for harness
racing, authorities told
Carmine Agnello
Cleveland.com (story here)
that Agnello is also accused of injecting race horses with
banned substances. The officials declined to give any more
details on the horse doping part of the charges against
Agnello and it was not immediately clear whether Agnello
was suspected of drugging harness or thoroughbred
horses. However, he has never been known to have any
involvement with thoroughbreds.
Racing authorities will also have to investigate how
Agnello was involved in racing without being licensed and
who might have been acting as his “beard.”
Angello’s USTA license expired in 1990.
He was married to Gotti’s daughter, Victoria.

Sebastian K Sidelined
By USTA Communications Staff
Sebastian K, the fastest trotter in harness racing history,
is currently on the sidelines, according to Tristan Sjoberg,
who with his brother Michael Knutsson makes up Knutsson
Trotting Inc., the owners of the 9-year-old stallion.
"On W ednesday last week, (trainer) Åke (Svanstedt)
trained him and during the fast intervals he showed no
signs of lameness," said Sjoberg. "On his way back to the
stable, only jogging speed, he became lame left hind. Åke
came off his bike and removed the skin boot and found lots
of sand and gravel stuck inside, putting pressure on the
leg. Åke removed the protection and the lameness
disappeared. As a precaution we took him to the clinic on
Friday and an ultrasound examination discovered bleeding
in the suspensory ligament indicating a tear.
"This past weekend the swelling all but disappeared and
he exhibits no lameness. A physical examination on
Monday indicated no apparent injury.
"W e have decided to jog him every day for two weeks to
see how he reacts and we will conduct another ultrasound
examination in two weeks’ time.
"If a tear in the suspensory ligament is confirmed then he
will have an early retirement and go to stud full-time in
North America. But we are still holding out hope that the
bleeding seen on the ultrasound was just pressure trauma
from the gravel. That might be wishful thinking from his
connections but we want to be 110 percent sure it really is
a tear in the ligament before we retire him."
Sebastian K won eight of 13 races last year and received
the Dan Patch Award as the sport’s best older male trotter.
He arrived in the U.S. last year after a record-setting career
in Europe. The Swedish-born stallion trotted a
world-record-equaling 1:50.1 in his debut at the
Meadowlands and capped a record streak of four
consecutive victories in 1:50.3 or faster with his
world-record 1:49 triumph at Pocono.
In his only start this year, Sebastian K was second to
world champion JL Cruze in the $75,000 Sun Invitational on
July 4 at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono. JL Cruze
rallied in deep stretch to upend Sebastian K by a nose in
1:51. The mile equaled the world record for a 4-year-old
trotting gelding on a five-eighths-mile track set back in 2014
by W ind Of The North.

Catalog Posted for “All Racehorse” Sale
Owners and trainers looking to buy racehorses have a
great opportunity coming soon, as
Tattersalls will conduct another “all
racehorse” sale at the
Meadowlands on Sunday, August
2.
The Meadowlands Summer
Mixed Sale gets underway at noon
that day, with more than 130
racehorses selling that include a
big section of three year olds--57
in all.
The main sale catalog and past
performances catalog are now
available and are posted for
download at
www.tattersallsredmile.com and
on the
Equineline sales catalog app.
“This sale exceeded our
expectations in terms of both number and quality,” said
sale manager David Reid. “It’s very strong in the ‘meat of
the market,’ horses that are racing, winning and making
money. The three year olds that we’ll sell--almost 60 of
them--are right in the
wheelhouse of what owners and trainers want today.”
The sale follows a highly successful spring sale for
Tattersalls. It kicks off Hambletonian week festivities at the
Meadowlands, with the gem of trotting’s Triple Crown set
for the following Saturday.
Reid advised that print catalogs will be mailed shortly to
those on the sales company’s mailing list. Others may
request a print catalog and racelines by visiting
www.tattersallsredmile.com and filling out the
catalog request form.
Reid also pointed out that horses for the supplement
catalog are still being accepted.
National Seelster’s 1:51.1 Fastest of Trio in
Yonkers’ 168g Nyss Hugh Grant Pace
By Frank Drucker
Publicity Director - Empire City @ Yonkers Raceway
YONKERS, NY (July 16, 2015) - National Seelster (Andy
Miller, $13.20) ripped out of the pocket and ripped past a
prohibitive favorite Thursday night, throwing down the
gauntlet with the fastest of three efforts during Yonkers
Raceway’s $168,375 New York Sire Stakes Hugh Grant
Pace.
Leaving alertly from post position No. 6 in the first,
$56.125 event for 3-year-old pacing colts/geldings, National
Seelster made the first lead. He then gave up the baton to
1-4 choice Arque Hanover (Jason Bartlett) right at a :27.1
opening quarter-mile. Southwind Massimo (Pat Lachance)
was away third.

Arque Hanover found a 56-second intermission and
1:23.4 three-quarters, with no outer pressure whatsoever.
He took a length lead into the lane, but National Seelster
was more than ready for his second move. He went up and
over “Arque,” winning by a length-and-quarter in a
certifiably-snappy 1:51.1.
Arque Hanover held second over Southwind Massimo.
For second choice National Seelster, an (unraced at 2)
son of Bettor’s Delight trained by Chris Ryder for
co-owners Robert Mondillo and Oompa’s Farm, it was his
seventh win in 13 seasonal starts (4-for-4 in NYSS
competition). The exacta paid $22.60, with the triple
returning $86.50.
“He’s just a perfect colt,” Ryder said. “Does whatever you
ask, gets around any surface. W e may try the Adios next,
depending upon how many of those ‘killers’ are there.”
Thursday’s other Grant events were won by Betting
Exchange (Jim Morrill Jr., $2.10) getting off the seasonal
schneid in 1:53.3, and Americanprimetime (Bartlett,
$19.80), holding off 59-1 Rock in Heaven (Dave Miller) in a
season’s-best 1:52.4.
The former, Bettor’s Delight colt trained by Tom Fanning
for co-owners himself, Howard Taylor and Susan Kajsfasz,
zipped well past $300,000 in career cash. The exacta
(Penji Hanover [Mark MacDonald] second) paid $4.50 (two
wagering choices, with the triple (K-Rock [Yannick
Gingras] third) returning $27.80. The winning margin was
two lengths.
For fourth choice Americanprimetime, a son of American
Ideal trained by Rick Dane Jr. for owner Rock and Roll
Stable, he’s now 2-for-9 this season. The exacta paid
$148.50, the triple (Artistic Major [Scott Zeron] third)
returned $1,548 and the superfecta (17-10 choice A Bettor
Hat [Brian Sears] fourth) paid $12,135 (base $2 payout).
The winning margin was a half-length.
Racing Must Recruit New Owners
By Dean A. Hoffman
I've long believed that there are people in the
grandstands or clubhouses at tracks who would love to
own a harness horse.
They never become
owners, however,
because: (1) they have
no idea how to take the
first step to ownership,
and (2) they think you
must be a
multi-gazillionaire to own
horses.
You don’t have to be a
That's why I've been an
gazzilionaire to own
advocate of owners
standardbreds
seminars for decades.
And I've conducted many of them myself.
Owners seminars are not rocket science. A seminar can
take on many sizes and shapes---from all-day sessions to
two-hour seminars. You can have 50 people attend or 12.
To me there is simply no such things as a bad owners
seminar. The mere fact that harness racing is reaching out
to prospective owners alone is a good thing.
That outreach is desperately needed in harness racing.
Our base of owners has atrophied. In 1985, the USTA had
over 50,000 members; now the number hovers around
17,000.
Earlier this week the USTA convened a summit on
declining foals crops in Standardbreds to search for
answers on how to increase the horse population. It all goes
back to owners, of course. Breeders are owners and if they
cut back or leave the breeding business, the overall horse
population will also drop.
W hen the horse population drops, it makes sense that the
number of races contested should also drop, but we still see
many tracks offering programs of 12-15 races. These are
often not quality races, and the sheer quantity of races can
grind down the available horse population and the
resources of bettors.
W hen there are fewer horses, there should be fewer
races. Thoroughbred racing has had an extreme problem
with limited field size.
I recently asked a rabid horseplayer if he still frequented a
certain Thoroughbred track.
"Not as long as they have those short fields," he said.
"Can't make no money betting five and six horses fields."
That's vox populi---the voice of racing's customer. And I
often wonder if racing listens to its customers.
(continued on next page)
HarnessRacingUpdate.com
• 7/17/15 PAGE 7 of 17
I know that bettors like large fields and some horsemen
seem to think that a five-horse field is ideal. If racing truly
values its customers, field size will increase.
Larger fields may mean longer races. After all, the
100-meter dash in the Olympics has a small field by the
distance events have more runners. Simple formula: the
longer the race, the more participants.
More participants means more betting opportunities.
Some will gripe that if 12 horses start and only five get
checks, a lot of horses will come home empty-handed.
But who says that only we need to pay only five places.
It's one of the traditions of racing without any rational basis
to which we cling without thinking.
The number of purse checks can vary according to the
size of the field. I sure never liked seeing five places paid
in a five-horse race. (In fact, I never liked seeing a
five-horse race.)
Now, back to getting new owners: I believe that every
track, association, and horsemen's group should be
aggressively seeking owners on a continuing basis.
I remember contacting a track once about scheduling an
owners seminar, and was told, "Yeah, we've done that. W e
had one last year."
That's not good enough. W hat if prospects have a
conflict on that date? Should we simply expect them to wait
a couple years until another seminar is held? Can we
afford to wait that long?
No. Seminars should be held regularly at tracks or at
sale venues. They are not difficult to conduct, and having
them quarterly at tracks is sustainable.
W hen I was involved in doing owners seminars for the
USTA, a USTA director once called and said that we were
doing a disservice.
"I've owned horses for 30 years, and most of time I've
lost money," he said. How could we encourage people to
invest in a business where most people lose money?”
At the start of every seminar I conducted, I gave a
disclaimer that horses were a speculative investment.
"If you want a secure place to put your money, put it
under your pillow or in the bank," I would announce. "If you
are attending this seminar thinking that an investment in
horses guarantees a return, the exits are clearly marked
now and you may leave. But stick around if you're looking
for an investment that can be profitable and can give you
thrills and excitement that you'll never get from a bank
account or mutual fund."
There are diverging views on charging a fee for such
seminars. I was always in the "Free" camp. I was aghast
when I heard talk of charging fees up to $100 for short
seminars. Those people felt that if the seminar was free, it
would be deemed to be without value and merit. Charging
a fee would demonstrate that people were serious about
horse ownership.
Heck, I would have been willing to pay people to attend.
If they showed a sincere interest in Standardbred
ownership, they were valuable prospect for the business.
Offering free seminars was my preference.
I've often heard the rejoinder, "Harness racing doesn't
need new owners. W e need new bettors."
In truth, we need both.
But who thinks that owners don't bet? They do bet---often
in great sums. And an enthusiastic owner is perhaps the
greatest promoter of horse ownership because he or she
can bring friends to the track and perhaps into horse
ownership.
That's a goal that we can all support.
There is a different kind of transition going on right now in
Ontario, one from the testing protocols of old to the state of
the art testing of today.
Earlier this month Ontario watched as a group of trainers
received notice of a positive test on horses that they train.
One after another they claimed innocence.
You may say "the prisons are full of innocent people.” Not
so fast, these cases were from people with little in common,
except one thing: They all claimed to have used
antihistamine, and supposedly well outside the CPMA
withdrawal guideline of 48 hours.
For eight months I was popping tums non stop, edgy, and
obviously concerned. I know exactly how these people feel.
I often forget how widespread Harness Racing Update is, so
for those who have no idea what I'm talking about, I refer
you to the links below:
| story 1 |story 2 | story 3 | story 4 | story 5 |
The real issue here is, our modernized testing has
eclipsed our withdrawal times, and in some instances it's
causing some real issues.
I'm all for strenuous testing, but as many have said for
months, these unexplainable positive tests will continue to
happen as our testing evolves. Our industry is charting new
territory, but the participants shouldn't be speed bumps
along the way without equally protective safeguards for the
people in this industry. If not, lives are ruined and hard
working people are steamrolled.
If you're lucky enough to have never made a mistake or
been involved in some sort of medical infraction, you may
not understand the pressure cooker these people will now
be in. It's hard to imagine what would happen until it
happens. Traditionally what will happen in horse racing if
you get a positive test is: You would receive a call from the
racing commission saying your horse has returned a
positive certificate of some sort. If you know what
happened; your crushed. In some cases you have no one
to blame but yourself and you have to face the realization
that regardless of the situation, a penalty will apply.
But, what if you know what happened, and you did
nothing wrong?
W ell, firstly, people in our industry will immediately be
calling for your head, because in our world, only cheaters
get caught...right?
People will point fingers and you will be tried publicly and in
HarnessRacingUpdate.com
• 7/17/15 PAGE 8 of 17
most cases found guilty immediately.
Thankfully, there are safeguards in place, a long list of
regulatory checks and balances that should insure a proper
commission investigation, due process and somewhere in
that time frame, the truth should come out.
Until these therapeutic medication withdrawal
times are examined, refined, and fixed, I'm not
sure anyone is safe.
–Anthony MacDonald
People here in Ontario and everywhere else need to be
aware of the diligence they need to show when dealing
with all medications, and how fluid the guidelines really are
for many medications right now.
I hope we can ingest all that is going on and move
forward and carefully consider the ramifications on both
sides of this coin. I believe this industry will be stronger
when the dust settles but let's not tarnish it more along the
way.
I'm sure the evidence will speak for itself in these cases.
I am not a scientist and have no idea if or why
antihistamines that have been widely used to help treat
breathing issues in horses for decades are now
supposedly causing positive tests, but I'm certain the
CPMA and ORC will get to the bottom of it.
Don't cast stones at your fellow horsemen, because you
too could find yourself in that other persons situation.
Until these therapeutic medication withdrawal times are
examined, refined, and fixed, I'm not sure anyone is safe.
There are people who understand the scientific finer
points of what is happening right now in Ontario, I'm sure
many of them work for the CPMA. I truly hope they
understand what going through something of this
magnitude does to someone. Their family is stressed, their
money is spent on lawyers instead of in some cases
paying bills and they cannot fathom eating spicy food.
Obviously Im trying to bring levity to the situation, but
there is nothing funny about going through something like
this.
W e are trying to rebuild our sport. Lets get it right. W e
may never have another chance.
