I Luv The Nitelife: No Sale
By Bill Finley
Richard and Joanne Young are still the owners of I Luv
The Nitelife.
Looking to sell their star mare through the on-line auction
site Ongait.com yesterday, the Youngs weren't happy with
how the bidding was going and made the final and winning
bid themselves.
at a sale like Harrisburg."
Young has yet to plot his next move, but said selling I
Luv The Nitelife at the mixed sale at Harrisburg is one
option.
"Is Harrisburg the most likely option? That's a tough one
to answer," he said. "Harrisburg is a costly scenario in that
you know need to get at least 10 percent more than the bid
I got for her on Ongait for it all to all equal out. I have not
made a decision on Harrisburg as of yet."
Young said his other options are to keep I Luv The
Nitelife and breed her or to accept the standing offer he
has for the $300,000.
A champion last year at three, I Luv the Nitelife
underwent knee surgery during the off-season and did not
come back the same horse. She raced twice, at the
Preferred level at Mohawk, and finished off the board both
times. Young said she could still presumably keep racing
but said will not send her back to the track because there
is too much risk of serious injury.
He said that if he sells her privately he will insist that the
new owner not race her.
"My wife keeps telling me to make sure if I ever sell her
that she will not race again," he said. "In a private sale we
would write up a contract that says the horse is for
breeding only and deal is null and void if she is raced."
(continued on next page)
Owner Richard Young bought I Luv The Nitelife back
yesterday
W ith about 10 minutes left before the auction concluded
Richard Young put in a bid for $310,000, which was the
final bid. The last bid made by someone other than Young
was $300,000.
"W hat would have made my wife happy was $400,000,"
Young said. "I would have been happy with 350. If we got
close to 350 I would have let her go. All we got was to 300.
I already have an offer for her for 300 and have had it for 10
days now. I am still considering it. I tried to see if I could
get more and the answer was I couldn't."
W hen Young put in his bid for $310,000 he thought for
sure someone would top it.
"I was surprised," he said. "I sold three horses previously
this way and all the action was in the last few minutes. I'm
not happy, I'm not unhappy. "
In hindsight, Young realized this may not have been the
best time of year to sell a broodmare prospect.
"From what I understand there are two major reasons this
went the way it did," he said. "I am trying to sell a horse at a
time when the babies haven't been sold yet. The breeding
farms want to know how well they did selling their babies
before they dish out a big number for a horse. A lot are also
in a cash shortage situation at this time of year because the
money hasn't coming in yet that they're going to get at the
yearling sales. The second reason is that with an on-line
sale you don't have the hyped up atmosphere that you have

“Lyons” Will Be Supplemented to Jug
Cane Pace winner Lysonssomewhere will be
supplemented to the Little
Brown Jug, trainer Jimmy
Takter has confirmed. The
cost will be $45,000.
“That’s the main reason
we went into the Cane
Pace, so if we won he
would be eligible to be
supplemented to the Jug,”
Lyonssomewhere is Jug bound Takter said. “It was an
(Fred Brown photo)
easy decision. This horse
will have a helluva shot in
the Jug. This horse has a big advantage over other horses.
He can leave the gate better than any horse I’ve ever had.
If you can bounce out of the gate there you have a lot
bigger chance.”
Takter won the 2006 Jug with Mr Feelgood.
“The Jug is a top race,” he said. “The money isn’t crazy
and I wish it were more. But this horse is very lightly staked
so a win in a race like this could be very important for his
future.”
Lyonssomewhere won the Cane over He’s W atching, who
will be one of the favorites in the Jug.
Big Names on Card Sunday at Chester
After a stopover tonight at Pocono Downs the
Pennsylvania All-Star series will continue Sunday at
Chester, where the lineup is a strong one.
The race for 3-year-old trotting fillies is headed by
Hambletonian Oaks winner Lifetime Pursuit, who will be
after her fifth straight victory. McW icked, the possible
favorite in the Little Brown Jug, headlines the event for 3year-old male pacers. Father Patrick, the beaten favorite in
the Hambletonian, is the biggest name in the race for 3year-old male trotters. After breaking stride in the Hambo
Father Patrick was upset in the Tompkins Geers at Tioga
but looked like his old self when winning the Zweig at
Vernon Downs. His competition Sunday will include
stablemate Nuncio and Datsyuk, who defeated him at
Tioga. Sandbetweenurtoes, who is 8 for 8 this year, figures
to go favored in the race for 3-year-old filly pacers.

Undefeated I Like My Boss To Step Up in Class
Wednesday
Racing for the first time outside the Delaware-bred ranks,
I Like My Boss will look to improve to 15 for 15 lifetime
when the 3-year-old trotter goes in the $17,000 Open
W ednesday at Harrington.
“This will be the first time he’s had to go against the open
horses,” coowner/breeder and
trainer Bob Shahan said.
“He’ll be in with a lot
tougher horses than he's
ever been in against but
if he’s as good as I think
he is I don’t think it will be
too hard on him.”
I Like My Boss will shoot for his
A gelding by Don
15th straight Wednesday at
Boss Vita, I Like My Boss
Harrington
was 3 for 3 last year and
is perfect this year in 11
tries. Though his horse has yet to face a serious test,
Shahan is confident that he is training a top class animal.
"I am anxious to see how he does against better horses,"
he said. "I have so much confidence in him I'd race
anybody with him. I know in the one race at Harrington,
which a pretty tough half-mile track, he trotted his last
quarter in 27.2 and it didn't even look like he opened him
up to me. I don't think the open trotters can trot home that
fast at Harrington."
I Like My Boss has not been staked to any Grand Circuit
type races this year but Shahan said he will definitely try
tougher competition next year. He plans on going in some
of the winter stakes series at the Meadowlands for older
male trotters.
"I know from sitting behind him in training that he's
super-fast but I know he has to go out and prove it against
the better horses," Shahan said. "I'd put him up against
anybody, except maybe not those Jimmy Takter horses."
Shahan is a veteran trainer who averages about 20 wins
a year. For him, I Like The Boss is a dream-come-true
horse.
"He's been very good to us and I'm really proud to have
him," he said. "I have his mother and I bred him and raised
him. For me, it's once in a lifetime that you get a horse like
this."
The secret to his success?
"It's the will to win," Shahan said. "He doesn't like to get
beat. Even training him down when I train him with the
other colts he won't let them beat him. Even when I'm not
really trying with him, he won't let anybody get by him. He
has to win and he's been that way ever since he's been
broke."

ORC Issues Statement on Controversial Race at
Mohawk
The Ontario Racing Commission has weighed in on the
Sept. 1 race at Mohawk. A downpour made the track slick
for that night’s ninth race and the starting gate car impeded
some but not all of the horses in the field. Refunds were
handed out on some, but not all, of the horses in the race.
The statement is from Brent Stone, the Ontario Racing
Commission's manager of racing, and reads:
“As a result of heavy rain during the card, the starting car
had issues moving away from the field at the start of the
race, which led to the ORC judges declaring the outside
four horses in the seven-horse field "non-starters" and
having all wagers including their numbers refunded. The
judges then canceled the remaining three races on the
card.
"In their opinion, the ORC Judges at Mohawk determined
that the outside horses (4, 5, 7, 8) were prevented from
having a fair chance (to quote the rule: "...prevented from
having a fair chance to contest a race due to exceptional
circumstances, and it is deemed in the public interest to do
so, such horse shall be declared a non-contestant...”)
"However, the Judges also determined that horses 1, 2, 3
were not affected and were able to properly contest this
race. That is the lynchpin of their decision – these horses
were entitled to contest.
"Mohawk Racetrack is required to refund bets made on
horses that have been declared by ORC officials to be
"non-contestants”, as per the Pari-Mutuel Betting
Supervision Regulations made pursuant to the Criminal
Code. These regulations are administered by the Canadian
Pari-Mutuel Agency (CPMA), the federal agency
responsible for the supervision of betting.
"As ORC Racing Officials, the Judges are called upon to
apply their considerable experience and knowledge of the
Rules of Racing to make decisions that adhere to those
Rules. From time to time, some members of the public may
disagree with some calls. The public can be assured that
the mandate of the Ontario Racing Commission (ORC) is to
protect the public interest, maintain the fairness of horse
racing and officiate races according to the Rules of Racing.”
Many gamblers were upset that the race was not declared
a “no contest,” which would have meant that all wagers
were refunded.

Yonkers Hosts 198G NYSS Lew Barasch Trot
By Frank Drucker,
Publicity Director, Empire City @ Yonkers Raceway
YONKERS, NY - Yonkers Raceway Friday night hosted
its final statebred division of the season, the $198,999 New
York Sire Stakes Lew Barasch Trot for 2-year-old colts and
geldings. It’s the last chance for these freshmen to qualify
for the $1.8 million New York Night of Champions, held
here next Saturday (Sept. 13).
Three divisions – worth $66,733, $65,533 and $66,733,
respectively -- made up the event, which honored the
memory of the iconic Hall of Fame harness publicist from
the sport's golden age. Many of "Tootie's" family, including
his wife, Bunny, and friends were on hand for winner's
circle presentations.
Friday’s pair of $44,000 Open Handicaps, for trotters and
distaff pacers, were won by Traverse Seelster (Tyler Buter,
$4.90) in 1:54.1, and Venus Delight (Bartlett, $6.10) in
1:51.3. The latter matched Rocklamation’s track record for
a 4-year-old pacing mare.
First division—Second choice Insomniac (Jason Bartlett,
$7.20), from post position No. 4 and from start to finish
(:30.1, 1:00.2; 1:29.3; 1:58.3). Crazshana (Trond
Smedshammer) was a first-up second, beaten a couple of
lengths, with Credit Creation (Mark MacDonald) third.
Mambo Blue Chip (Jeff Gregory) broke in the pocket as the
6-5 choice.

For Insomniac, a Crazed gelding co-owned by (trainer)
Paul Kelley and W illiam W eaver III, it was his second win in
nine seasonal starts. The exacta paid $27.20, with the triple
returning $121.50.
"I wanted him to finish better than he has, and he did that
tonight,” Bartlett said.
Mohawk Cancels After One Race; Wellwood
Elims Rescheduled
W ith severe lighting striking the area, officials at Mohawk
called off the card last night after one race.
The horses were in the paddock for the second race, the
first of two elims for the W illiam W ellwood for 2-year-old
trotters, when the severe weather started to roll in. They
waited for more than an hour for the storms to pass before
the remainder of the card was called off.
The two W ellwood elims will be held tonight as nonwagering events before the regular card.
Crazy Wow (photo by Mayra Escamilla)
Second division—Second choice Crazy W ow (Dan
Rawlings, $8) gave both himself and his driver a successful
local debut. From post No. 2, he led at every pylon (:30,
1:00.2, 1:30, 1:58.2). W ings of Royalty (Brian Sears)
chased from a loose pocket—beaten 2½ lengths—with
even-money fave Sugarmakesmecrazy (Ake Svanstedt) a
non-threatening third.
For Crazy W ow, a son of Crazed owned by Joseph Hess
and trained by Dan O’Mara, it was his third win in six ’14
tries. The exacta paid $23.80, with the triple returning
$56.50.
“Dan (O’Mara) said he had a good trotter and asked me
drive him,” Rawlings said. “He showed high speed, then
broke, but he showed me enough that I told Dan ‘W herever
he goes, I’m going.’
“He’s had some rigging issues, but Benny Eggers, who
has the horse here, figured it out. He deserves a lot of the
credit.”
Buen Camino (photo by Mayra Escamilla)
Third division—Pole-sitting (and odds-on) Buen Camino
(Smedshammer, $2.30) fooled very few, going the distance
(:29.4; 1:00, 1:30.3; 1:59.1). Royal Lad (MacDonald)
challenged in and out of the final turn before missing a
length, while 111-1 shot Pier Ho Exotic (John Cunning Jr.)
was a good, two-move third.
For Buen Camino, a Crazed gelding trained by his driver
for owner Purple Haze Stables, he’s 2-for-2 here and
4-for-6 overall, having won his last three (NYSS) starts. The
exacta paid $23.80, with the triple returning $230.
“W hat’s impressed me about him is his speed,”
Smedshammer said. “Speed wins races. Ideally, you don’t
want to have a young horse on the front every race, but we
drew inside and figured it was the best place to be.”
