Hockey and Horses are Brad Maxwell's Life
By Perry Lefko
Given that he's only been training back full time for four
years after leaving the sport to pursue a career as an
assistant coach in the Ontario Hockey League, trainer Brad
Maxwell is doing quite well.
The onetime conditioner of standout horses such as
Elegantimage, Pure Ivory, W indsong Espoir and
Beastmaster, to name a few of the
good ones he had before exiting
harness racing to concentrate on
coaching, has a modest stable of
nine horses. Among them is
two-year-old pacing colt sensation
Control The Moment, who
increased his career record to
seven wins in as many starts and
upped his career earnings to
$440,687 with an authoritative
outing in the $685,000 Metro Pace
last Saturday at Mohawk
Racetrack.
The son of W ell Said won by 2¼
lengths in a time of 1:49 4/5, which
was only two-fifths off the stakes
record. He won with a three-wide
move up the backstretch under the
direction of driver Randy W aples,
who was full of praise for the horse
Brad Maxwell is back in afterward. Control The Moment is
the spotlight with 2-year- entered Saturday night at Mohawk
old pacing star Control to race in a division of the
Champlain Stakes. Maxwell said
The Moment (Photo by
the colt will race in Lexington after

that and then will return home for
the Breeders Crown at W oodbine Racetrack.
Maxwell's evolution from training horses to coaching
hockey players began when his sons, Brandon and Ryan,
were playing minor
hockey. Maxwell, a
former Junior A
player with the
Kitchener Rangers,
didn't like the
coaching his sons
were receiving.
"I would bitch
about coaches and
stuff the whole
time, and my wife
said 'instead of
bitching, why don't
you do something
about it?' W hy don't you just give somebody a hand?' So I
did," Maxwell told Harness Racing Update.
He became a coach of note with the Cambridge Hawks
Minor Midget Triple A team, which had eight members
selected in the 2007 Ontario Hockey League Draft,
including defenceman Ryan Ellis, taken second overall.
Ellis developed into a first-round draft pick of the Nashville
Predators. Brandon, a goalie, was also on the team and in
later years was a sixth-round draft pick of the Colorado
Avalanche. He now plays in Czechoslovakia.
Maxwell's work caught the attention of Dave Barr, head
coach of the Guelph Storm, and he was offered a job as an
assistant coach for the 2007-08 season. Maxwell was
training horses at the time, including W indsong Espoir, who
won nine of 10 races as a juvenile and almost $700,000 in
2007, and Pure Ivory, who won more than $1.4 million in
her career.
Faced with the decision of continuing to train or leave to
take a full-time job as an assistant with Guelph - some of
his clients didn't like him doing both - he opted to exit the
horse racing industry. He turned his horses over to his son
Ryan during the 2008 season and gradually divested
himself of his racing stock.

"It was just something I wanted to do," he said. "I'm only
going to go around once and I wanted to coach hockey, so
I did. I really loved doing that."
Among the players he coached were Drew Doughty, now
a star defenceman with the Los Angeles Kings, and Peter
Holland (now with Toronto). In the summers, Maxwell
coached a travelling squad of players, some of whom
included Matt Duchene (Colorado) and Kyle Clifford (Los
Angeles). After four years and numerous changes with the
Storm’s hockey operations, Maxwell found himself
unemployed. He wanted to scout full-time, but there weren’t
any opportunities.
"If I was in demand for hockey, that would be one thing,
but there's a lot of guys that want to be part of a hockey
team," he said. "You have no idea. W hen a guy gets fired
from a hockey team, 25 calls are made that minute to a
general manager. It's no different than this game.
"W hen I came back (to training horses), I had a hard time,
because (owners) had the thought I would go back to
hockey."
He re-established a connection with owner Doug Millard,
whom he had success training Elegantimage, who won
almost $1 million in her career. Maxwell purchased an
unraced two-year-old filly trotter, Dancehall Mistress, for
$80,000 in Michigan on behalf of Millard. Glenn Tarver and
Dr. David Goodrow each bought quarter shares off of
Millard. The filly earned about $400,000 for the group
before sold privately last October.
Throughout his career, Maxwell has tended to buy horses
with a ceiling under $100,000. Control The Moment, who
was offered at the Lexington Select Yearling Sale, fit into
his budget. He was out of a mare, Lifesliltreasure, Maxell
had trained at one time. The colt sold for a modest
$47,000.
"I thought he would go for more than he did, but I don't
write a price down," he said. "I was just hoping I could get
him bought."
He sold quarter interests to Howard Taylor, who liked
Well Said as a sire, Edwin Gold and Ben Mudry.
Maxwell said that of all the horses he has trained in his
career, Control The Moment is by far the best. Maxwell
became aware of how good the colt was when he trained
him with the hard-knocking six-year-old pacer Ellis Park,
who is a high-level condition horse.
"He was going head to head with him down the lane and
that takes a lot of horse to do that," Maxwell said. "Ryan
got off the bike that day and said, 'Holy crap, Dad, I think
he's the best one we ever had.' It was just before I was
going to qualify him. I don't get too excited about training
them down because they all seem to train fairly well. I'm a
laid-back trainer. I put a lot of miles into them. I don't
pressure them ever, so I don't really know what bottom is
until I start training them a little harder."
Maxwell said the DreamMaker Series, which had two
legs and a final, helped the colt develop, followed by the
Nassagaweya. But facing the top two-year-olds in training
in North America, Control The Moment was put to the test.
"I knew he could go fast, it's just how far he can carry his
speed," Maxwell said. "That was a pretty good mile the

other night, he was parked three deep at the half when he
cleared and just kept rolling along."
Driver Randy W aples remarked after the race: "He's a
very, very unbelievably nice animal. It seems like he's got a
huge set of lungs to him. He does not get tired."
There have been expressions of interest from people
wanting to buy the colt, but Maxwell has no plans to sell at
the moment.
"I did that when I was younger, but I'm 57 now and I enjoy
having this horse," he said. "It's a pleasure to have. He
does everything right and I want to have a good horse, too.
If you just get blessed and have that one chance at one I'm
not just going to sell him to somebody."
As an aside, after the race and following the winner's
circle photos, Maxwell bolted to the paddock with Control
The Moment, eschewing interviews. He wanted to take the
colt to the test barn and cool him out afterward. He also
had a horse racing later in the card.
As a "hands-on" horseman, Maxwell is more concerned
about his horses than basking in the limelight.
"I don't get anything out of it," he said. "I like the horse to
get all the credit because we just help them get there. It's
all about the horses."
Much the same as it was with the hockey players he
coached.
"It had really nothing to do with us at the end," he said. "It
was all about those kids. They were good. It's the same
with these horses. I got lucky buying this colt. Generally I
don't buy pacers, although I'm going buy some now, but
this guy here I just took a look at him because I trained the
mare and she was a good mare, and I liked the farm this
colt was raised at. But now it has nothing to do with me; it
has everything to do with this horse. He's just as good
horse.
"There's not a lot of difference between coaching junior
hockey and doing what I'm doing here, and the hours are
about the same. I'm not kidding you. I didn't realize how
many hours these guys in hockey put into it. It's morning
until night every day."
Similar to training horses. It's a job that doesn't always
offer a lot of glory, even less so when you're not actively
looking for it.

Four Michigan Drivers Seeking Huge Sums in
Damage Suit After Race Fixing Case Went
Nowhere
By Perry Lefko
Four Michigan-based drivers who resumed their careers
last year following a suspension of more than three years
for their alleged involvement in fixing races - even though
they were never charged - will be seeking compensation
from the Michigan Gaming Control Board for lost income
and damages to their reputations.
John Moody, Donald Harmon, W ally McIlmurray and Rick
Ray had their careers put on indefinite hold when the
MGCB suspended them in May, 2010 for alleged race
fixing at Swartz Creek, Northville and Hazel Park.
Under advisement from their legal counsel at the time,
the drivers exercised their constitutional rights not to testify
over concerns they might implicate themselves.
W hen the MGCB refused
to accept their applications
to race after 2010 and
2011, the drivers hired a
high-profile civil rights
lawyer, Hugh (Buck) Davis.
He filed a lawsuit in April,
2012 in the U.S. District
Court in the Eastern District
of Michigan Southern
Division, seeking the
reinstatement of their
licenses. The court ruled
Attorney Hugh (Buck) Davis is against them.
In May, 2014, Davis and
fighting for four Michigan drivers
the MGCB lawyers worked
out an agreement to allow the drivers to apply for their
licenses so they could race again.
This past June, the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals
ruled that the MGCB violated the constitutional rights of the
drivers by suspending them because they refused to testify.
Davis told Harness Racing Update that after the ruling,
MGCB executive director Richard Kalm publicly stated the
drivers' were still under investigation. Davis said that is
untrue, and the suggestion they are has caused problems
for the horsemen in some jurisdictions or racetracks that
won't allow them to race because of integrity concerns.
Davis has filed a motion to amend the complaint against
the MGCB because of Kalm's comments.
"W e're going to be looking for a big pay day as soon as
(the MGCB) come to their senses or face a trial," Davis
said.
A spokesperson for the MGCB declined comment when
contacted by Harness Racing Update.
Davis, who successfully represented clients that
challenged the legality of the Nixon administration's
domestic political wiretap program in the '70s, said he has
already wrung up $600,000 in legal expenses. In this type
of litigation, the lawyer receives a percentage of any money
awarded to the plaintiffs in either a court proceeding or
settlement should the parties come to a resolution.
"I started out suing the government for governmental
abuse in my first-ever case and it went to the Supreme
Court," Davis said. "I've been suing the government ever
since. It's the way I make my money. They always fight and
they have all kinds of abilities and protections and therefore
it's not unusual for cases to take three years or longer.
That's just the nature of the business and the reason not
many people do it - you can't afford to stand there that long
and wait to win - but I've done it long enough that I settle
enough cases every year to keep me going while the others
go through the process. Most of my work is policy
misconduct, police brutality, but the federal civil rights laws
cover every state or local governmental employee who
violates peoples' rights."
Moody is seeking justice for the mental, physical,
emotional and financial damage he has endured being
labeled a race-fixer.
(continued on next page)

• 9/11/15 PAGE 5 of 18
"I've raced for over 40 years and never had a problem
with racing in my life," Moody said. "I've trained for a lot of
retired judges and a lot of retired cops. W hen this whole
mess went down, we were like 'what in hell is going on
here?'
"I've been licensed everywhere around the country my
entire career. When I got back driving, I wanted to go to
Pompano last winter. Florida said they would license me,
but the racetrack said based on my reputation, which had
always been clean up until this little event, they did not
want me to come down. Ohio is the same thing. They will
license me, but the racetracks said it's not in the best
interests to have (me) here based on my reputation.
"I've been in the business driving horses since 1977, won
numerous awards and have great friends and never had a
problem anywhere I went. Now I'm the guy that fixed races.
I'm 56 years old and horse racing is the only thing I know.
What else am I going to do? My reputation is shot."
Moody, who had to file for bankruptcy protection on his
farm while out of work, said he will be seeking more than
$10 million because of the toll it has taken on him and the
damage to his reputation. He totaled more than $320,000 in
purse earnings for the horses he drove in 2009. Last year,
he had only 24 drives and purse earnings under $10,000.
This year, he has driven less than 100 times and his horses
have earned slightly more than $50,000.
"One thing I've learned about this process: no one is
going to ram a settlement down my throat," he said. "I've
had two heart attacks over this, four hospital stays and a
stroke. I'm done with these corrupt officials and they are
going to pay the price. It's that simple.
"I can tell you this much, if I was sitting in a room with
three other guys and one guy said he wants over $10
million, my first thing is 'I'm not going to take any less than
him.' I'm saying from John Moody's perspective it's going to
cost over $10 million. I was on the front page all over the
country as the race fixer."
Harmon, who is racing in Indiana, said he cannot race
horses in Ontario until he comes in for a hearing with the
racing commission because the MGCB recently said the
horsemen are still under investigation.
"There is no investigation. It's been over since 2010,"
Harmon said. "The Gaming Board said we got our licenses
back but we're still under investigation. Ontario won't
license me, it's costing me a lot of money. I told them I
would come up there in November and get it straightened
out so I can race up there."
He has a homebred two-year-old colt pacer, Blue Fox, he
owns, trains and races that was staked to races in Ontario
but was scratched by the Ontario Racing Commission from
two races in July.
"If you know anything about the horse racing business,
you know what kind of expenses there are from breeding
the horse to getting it ready to race," he said.
Harmon said he hasn't thought about how much money
he will be seeking in damages.
"I've had two heart attacks over this, four hospital
stays and a stroke. I'm done with these corrupt
officials and they are going to pay the price. It's that
simple.”
Driver John Moody
“I knowing we're getting awfully close to sitting at the
table with these people and whatever Buck says I'm going
with him," Harmon said. "It's affected my reputation. I had a
lot of horses at the time - I've got quite a few now - and
mentally it took a big stress on me because I've got three
kids and we have a 40-acre farm in Michigan. I had to send
my wife (Krista) on the road to train and we were separated
for a couple years. It was hard on me and the kids, (just)
every day waking up. As far as my health, knock on wood
I've been okay.
"I'm not driving my horses at Hoosier. It's a pretty tough
driving colony. Everybody around here won't use me
because they probably think I am fixing races. It's hurt my
reputation. I trained horses for a lot of guys who stuck
behind me. They knew it was b.s. from the start."
His horses earned on average more than $500,000 in
purse earnings in the years leading up to his suspension.
He totaled $241,363 in purse earnings last year from 246
drives. This year he has made slightly over $200,000 with
less than 200 drives.
Davis had no knowledge of the horse racing industry or
any of the horsemen before taking on the case. To him, it
was strictly a matter of the abuse of civil rights with no
basis to the claim of race fixing. Moreover, Davis said the
matter was driven by a "police rogue operation."
According to court documents, the race fixing allegation
surfaced in 2009. Gary Post, the Operations Manager of
the Horse Racing Section of the MGCB, received an
anonymous call about several drivers, trainers and
gamblers involved in a race-fixing scheme that took place
in 2008 and 2009. Following the tip, Post immediately
began an investigation and enlisted steward Robert
Coberley to help in reviewing suspicious races. Initially,
Coberley and Post focused their attention on eight harness
races, and reported their findings to the Michigan State
Police, which conducted an investigation and later
executed search warrants.
The matter became public when the Michigan State
Police and MGCB indicated in a media release in March,
2010 they executed multiple search warrants at three
private residences in Southeast Michigan, as part of an
ongoing investigation into individuals suspected of
race-fixing, and that Ontario Racing Commission was also
involved in the investigation. The release indicated
investigators identified as many as 30 harness driver,
trainers, owners, and gamblers who are "believed to have
conspired to predetermine the outcome of certain harness
horse races" at Hazel Park, Northville Downs and Sports
Creek Raceway "to earn a profit through fraudulent
wagering." It was noted the three tracks had been working
and cooperating fully with investigators and were not under

investigation.
"Anyone attempting to fraudulently influence the outcome
of a horse race or to profit through fraudulent wagering is
guilty of a felony," Col. Peter C. Munoz, Director of the
MSP, said in the release. "The MSP takes these allegations
seriously and is working closely with the MGCB to fully
investigate these allegations and any race-related illegal
activity."
"The MGCB is committed to ensuring the highest
standards of integrity in Michigan's horse racing industry,"
Kalm said in the release. "Competitors can be assured
races will be conducted fairly and those placing wagers
should feel confident they have a fair chance to win."
Phone numbers were provided for anyone with information
about these allegations or "other race-related illegal
activities."
Moody said he and the other horsemen co-operated with
the MGCB when they were originally accused of race fixing
because they had nothing to hide, but said a "rogue cop"
called up their lawyer and told him to tell his clients to be
prepared to be arrested immediately after testifying. Moody
said that's when he and the other horsemen were advised
to exercise their right not to say anything. But he said he
was told by two members of the MGCB they were not
allowed to plead the fifth because they had no rights as
licensed horsemen of the MGCB. They were suspended in
May, 2010 and immediately branded as race-fixers.
Kalm was quoted on mlive.com saying the horsemen
were suspended for not co-operating as required by their
licenses. He added "the license is a privilege and that's
how we view it. W e need transparency and co-operation
going forward." He added the suspensions could be lifted at
any time.
But two years later, after repeated attempts to get
licensed, the drivers hired Davis and he put forward the
lawsuit. The MGCB, Kalm, MGCB members Post and Al
Ernst, state stewards Daryl Parker, Richard Garrison and
Billy Lee W illiams, and John Lessnau, an investigator for
the board, were named as defendants.
The drivers sought "declaratory and injunctive relief"
concerning the legality of the suspension of their licenses,
but the court ruled against them.

Rock N Roll Heaven on the Move, Will Stand in
New Jersey at Deo Volente
Deo Volente Farms in
New Jersey has landed
another top sire as it was
announced yesterday by the
Bellino family that Rock N
Roll Heaven will stand there
in 2016. Deo Volente is also
the current home of 2014
Hambletonian winner
Trixton.
Though Rock N Roll
“Heavenly” news for Deo
Heaven
has gotten off to a
Volente as it has added Rock N
strong
start
as a sire, Joe
Roll Heaven to its stallion roster
Bellino, a spokesperson for the Bellino family stable, said
he was disappointed in the number of mares the stallion
was bred to this year at Blue Chip Farms in New York. With
so many outstanding pacing stallions in New York it
appears that Rock N Roll Heaven was having a hard time
standing out in the crowd.
According to USTA stats, Rock N Roll Heaven was bred
to just 59 mares this year.
“W e wanted a change,” Joe Bellino said. “His horses
were racing real well and he was the No. 1 rookie last year
in New York but we were just disappointed in his numbers
in New York this year, which were surprisingly low.”
Bellino said that he and his father, Frank, considered
several farms in the U.S. and in Canada and that Deo
Volente was not high up on anyone’s list. Many are wary of
standing stallions in New Jersey because of the weak sire
stakes program in the state.
“On W ednesday we were making our decision and Deo
Volente wasn’t even in the conversation,” Bellino said.
“Then dad looked at me and said, ‘I want to do the right
thing.’ He said ‘I want to send him to New Jersey.’ That
came out of nowhere. I said, ‘why?’ He said, ‘Jeff Gural has
put up all this money and everybody is running away, it’s
time somebody runs to help him and New Jersey racing
instead of complaining and saying Jersey racing is going
down the tubes.’
“He wanted to do the right thing. He is a huge fan of Bob
Marks and likes (Deo Volente owner) Mike Gulotta. That
dad decided to send him to New Jersey, I was as surprised
as anyone.”
Rock N Roll Heaven’s second crop are currently 2-yearolds. He has already produced four horses that have
earned in excess of $300,000, including Sassa Hanover,
who has made $704,002.

Habitat and Barn Doll Highlight NYSS
Championship Races at Yonkers
By Bill Finley
Ron Burke wasn't planning to be at Yonkers Saturday
night, not, at least with Habitat. He had the son of Conway
Hall penciled in for a start
the same night at
Mohawk in the elims for
the Canadian Trotting
Classic. But after Habitat
scored a minor upset last
week in the Yonkers Trot,
Burke concluded that
there was no better fit for
Habitat will be hard to beat in the his horse than Yonkers
NYSS finals Saturday at Yonkers and the $225,000 NYSS
finals.
Habitat likes Yonkers and Yonkers likes Habitat. After
beating Hambletonian winner Pinkman in the Yonkers Trot
he is 2 for 3 lifetime at Yonkers and he broke in his one
loss there. Overall, he's 4 for 6 on half-mile tracks and 10
for 21 on all other type tracks.
Suddenly the hottest horse in the 3-year-old male trotting
HarnessRacingUpdate.com

division with there straight wins Habitat looks like he'll be
an overwhelming favorite in the $225,000 NYSS division for
3-year-old male trotters. He not only won the Yonkers Trot,
he crushed the competition, winning by 3 1/3 lengths.
"I wasn't surprised that he won," said Burke, whose Crazy
Wow was supposed to be his strongest entrant in the
Yonkers Trot but broke stride. "W ith any horse in that race
you are a little worried how they will get around the first turn
but once he did I figured he'd be OK. This horse hasn't
received the attention some of the others have in his grouo
but he;s very solid and he knows how to win."
He will, however, have a new driver as Jim Morrill Jr.
takes over for Brian Sears, who will be driving at Mohawk.
Morrill will be Habitat's third different driver over his last
three races and his fourth over his last five starts.
"W e'll be fine with Jim because he's a good driver and
has driven Habitat before," Burke said. "But I really wish the
sport could do a better job coordinating these big races so
you don't have to worry about your regular drivers not being
available."
Like Habitat, Barn Doll is by Conway Hall and is having a
stellar year. She is 10 for 12 on the season for trainer and
co-owner Steven Pratt. But unlike Habitat she has done all
her racing in New York and has not ventured out on the
Grand Circuit.
"W e only paid $20,000 for her and when you do that it's
hard to make $30,000 in staking payments," Pratt said.
"But she's been a great horse for us. I think she definitely
could be a top three horse next year."
The last horse to beat Bran Doll this year is Jewels In
Hock, who eat her rival by a lengths in an Aug. 13 sire
stakes event at Yonkers. Pratt admitted Jewels In Hock is
aleways a horse to worry about.
"She's definitely the biggest threat, especially since she
drew the four, inside of us in the five," he said.
Pratt said Saturday's race will likely be the last this year
for Bran Doll as there are no more sire stakes on the
calendar and she is not staked for any major events. He
said he is leaning toward selling her this fall, but has not
made a final decision.
"If we sell her my wife (Nancy) would cry a lot," Pratt said.
"W e keep her at home and the other horses are at the
farm. She gets transported each day, stays at home in a
paddock we have here. W e've had some nice ones but
she's at another level. She's the best horse I've ever had."
Three-year-old pacing fillies will meet in the sixth race,
one of the more wide open affairs on the card. The
Burke-trained Band Of Angels has the best credentials on
paper but will likely have a hard time winning from the eight
post. In he race for 3-year-old pacing males, the Tom
Fanning-trained entry of Betting Exchange and My Spirit
Soars is the 7-5 morning line favorite, but will have to deal
with Rockin In Heavem a winner of three of her last four for
trainer Ian Moore.
Bangor Employee Killed When Struck by
Starting Gate
Bangor Raceway employee Edwin Reynolds, 64, was
killed W ednesday in a freak accident when struck by the
wings of the starting gate. There was no racing or qualifiers
that day at Bangor but track employees were working on
the starting gate car in preparation for the upcoming meet.
It was not immediately clear how Reynolds came to be
struck by the gate.
Bangor has canceled the races scheduled for Sept. 14
and 15 and will not race until what was the next scheduled
racing date, Oct. 5.
The incident is under investigation by the Bangor Police
Department and the Maine Occupational Safety and Health
Administration.
“This was obviously a tragic accident that happened to a
valued employee,” said Chris McErlean, who heads the
racing division for track owner Penn National Gaming. “He
was struck by a portion of the wing of the staring gate while
it was being tested for the meet, The circumstances of how
this happened are still being investigated.
“This incident has affected a lot of people. Mr. Reynolds
had worked at Bangor for 21 years. W e decided to cancel
the races next week out of respect to Mr. Reynolds and to
give the members of the Bangor family time to grieve.”
Brad Hanners Fundraiser Saturday at Scioto
A fundraiser will be held Saturday at Scioto Downs to
benefit driver Brad
Hanners, who in July was
diagnosed with renal cell
carcinoma, a type of
kidney cancer. Hanners
is at The Ohio State
University’s James
Cancer Hospital,
preparing to begin
treatment.
The 43-year-old
Hanners, an Ohio native
who lives 50 miles
Brad Hanners
southwest of Columbus
with his wife Alicia and children JorDan, Austin, Luke and
Mia, has posted 4,888 wins as a driver and 357 victories as
a trainer during his career. He enjoyed some of his greatest
successes at Harrington Raceway in Delaware, where he
captured three consecutive driving titles from 2003-05. He
also was a driving champion at Dover Downs.
Hanners set career highs with 478 wins and $4.74 million
in purses in 2005. His top triumphs include the 2009 Dan
Patch Invitational with Mister Big.
The fundraiser will include a raffle for a race bike and
harness plus a silent auction featuring a variety of items
from equipment to harness racing memorabilia and sporting
event tickets. Also, “Hanners Strong” T-shirts will be
available for purchase. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. in
an area between the Scioto Downs clubhouse and
grandstand.
Scioto Downs is hosting Super Night on Saturday, with a
full slate of Ohio Sire Stakes championships plus the Jim
Ewart Memorial Pace and the Chip Noble Memorial Trot.
Proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to help offset
medical and travel expenses for Hanners and his family. In

addition to Saturday’s fundraiser, a GoFundMe account has
been set up for donations. The account can be found here.
“Brad never really had any symptoms of being sick other
than back pain, and what driver doesn’t have back pain,”
said Brandi Sykes, who is helping to coordinate the event.
“W e’d just like everybody to pray for him and help him get
through this.”
Lexington Selected Set to Launch
The catalog has been mailed, it’s available for download
on the Equineline app and website, and videos have been
posted. It can mean only one thing: it’s “all systems go” for
the 2015 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale.
This year’s sale, which gets underway a day earlier than
in the past, on Monday, Oct. 5, has shaped up as one of
the company’s strongest sales ever, according to
co-managers David Reid and Randy Manges.
“W e’ve weathered a lot of storms over the years, as far
as the economy and all else, and this sale has always
stood up well regardless,” Manges said. “It’s truly the sale
of champions as we like to say. Our consignors are many
of the world’s most renowned breeders, and buyers know
this is where they can get a great horse at every price
level,” he added.
A new item on the sale’s agenda this year comes on
Tuesday, the second night. Those in attendance will have
the opportunity to bid on--via live auction--a one-of-a-kind
horse sculpture to benefit the Harness Horse Youth
Foundation. The sculpture, made by a Kentucky
artist/welder from nearly 1,000 pieces of repurposed
metals, will be on display at the Brittany Farms
consignment prior to its sale.
The sales company also noted that successful buyers at
Monday night’s opening session will receive a
complimentary copy of the newly released book “Meadow
Skipper-The Untold Story,” by authors Victoria M. Howard
and Bob Marks. The book will also be on sale at several
locations in Lexington during the Grand Circuit meet and
sale.

National, and 5 NJSS events. He retired to stud duty after
a remarkable 3-year-old season as the third richest pacer
of all time and was syndicated at an incredible $12 Million
Dollar Valuation.
It was in the breeding shed where he made a significant
and lasting impact as a regular at the top of all stallion
categories throughout his stallion career. His offspring
earned a remarkable $105,341,187. Jate Lobell's offspring
have averaged over $82,000 per starter, having produced
many of greats in recent racing history like Riyadh
($2,763,527), David's Pass ($1,652,500), Gothic Dream
($1,528,671), Village Jasper ($1,057,595), to name a few.
Not only was Jate Lobell a super-sire, he will long be
remembered as a prolific broodmare sire, with his
daughters producing winners of over $203,978,794
including Mister Big ($4,008,257), My Little Dragon
($2,318,623), Southwind Lynx ($1,763,389), and
Sportswriter ($1,566,460), etc.
In 2004 Jate Lobell was nominated to the Living Horse
Hall of Fame as a racehorse and stallion.
"Jate Lobell's legacy will live on for generations. He was
simply one of the greatest ever on the track, in the breeding
shed and as a broodmare sire. Jate Lobell put Kentuckiana
Farms on the map and we will cherish his memory for
years to come. It has been an honor to take care of him as
a long-time member of our family. He will be missed, " said
Bob Brady for Kentuckiana Farms.
Rookie Trotting Fillies Battle in Peaceful Way
Eliminations
Courtesy of Woodbine Entertainment
CAMPBELLVILLE, ON - A trio of eliminations were
contested Thursday night at Mohawk Racetrack for the
Peaceful Way Stakes.
A group of 22 two-year-old trotting fillies were separated
into three $30,000 eliminations with the top three finishers
and a fourth place finisher drawn by lot advancing to the
$410,000 final on Saturday, September 19.
In the first division, Staffan Lind trainee Celebrity Eventsy
looked like she was all by herself on the racetrack winning
easily in 1:55.2._03 CELEBRITY EVENTSY RC1.jpg
Driven by Brett Miller, Celebrity Eventsy sprinted out to
lead and posted an opening-quarter of :27.4. A first turn
break by Hills Angel, who sat second, left the Lind trainee
on top by about ten lengths down the backstretch. After a
middle fractions of :56.3 and 1:26.1, Celebrity Eventsy
trotted home in :29.1 to score an easy-looking four-length
victory.
“The only problem tonight she was pretty hot,” said Miller
following the race. “Going to the gate I was really worried,
when I got up to the gate she pushed her face up against it
and I was lucky to get her out of there trotting and once I
got her out of there she was pretty hot and wanting to go
fast.”
Ultimate Shopper inherited second thanks to the first turn
breaker and never gave up that position, while Pennies
From Above overtook third in mid-stretch to qualify for the
final.
A daughter of Manofmanymissions, Celebrity Eventsy is
owned by Celebrity Farms and now has two wins from six
starts to begin her career. The Lind trainee lowered her
career mark by a fifth of a second Thursday evening and
increased her bankroll to over $34,000.
Celebrity Eventsy paid $7.30 to win.
The second division featured Caprice Hill coming out on
top in a great stretch battle with All The Time.
Sent off as the 4/5 favourite, Caprice Hill flashed some
early speed for driver Tim Tetrick, but All The Time and
Yannick Gingras, at odds of 2/1, were able to power by on
the outside and take command heading into the first turn.
Emoticon Hanover, the third-choice, left from post two and
got away third.
The fillies sat in those positions through fractions of :27.4,
:58.1 and 1:27.1 to set up a stretch battle.
In the lane, Caprice Hill came to the outside and went
toe-to-toe with All The Time. The fillies slugged it out, but in
deep stretch Caprice Hill was able overtake the lead and
win by three-quarters of a length in 1:55. Emoticon Hanover
stayed right with the top pair and came up just a neck short
of getting by All The Time for second.
A daughter of Kadabra, Caprice Hill is trained by Tony
Alagna for owner Tom Hill. The rookie trotting filly has
drawn plenty of hype for her impressive performances this
season and now has five wins from six starts.
“I was happy with (the two-hole),” said Tetrick following
the race. “Yannick’s got a nice filly and it’s always good to
follow one of Takter’s and take it as easy on mine this week
because next week is where the big money is and hopefully
that trip will pay off next week.”
Thursday night was Tetrick’s second time driving the
Alagna trainee and he was able to gain some redemption
after driving the filly in her only loss on August 4.
“I was kind of mad at myself or embarrassed she got
beat,” said Tetrick. “She should have never got beat, she’s
a nice filly and luckily she showed that again tonight.”
Caprice Hill increased her earnings to over $172,000 with
the victory and lowered her career mark by two-fifths. She
paid $3.70 to win.
Could It Be Magic stretched her win streak to four in a
row with a 1:56.4 in the final elimination._08 COULD IT BE
MAGIC RC.jpg
Trained and driven by W ayne Henry, Could It Be Magic,
the 3/5 favourite, got away second behind High Heels, who
posted an opening-quarter in :27.4. There was no switch in
position through middle-half panels of :57 and 1:26.3.
Could It Be Magic popped the pocket at the top of the
lane and overtook the lead. Dewdle All Day tried to chase
down the favourite, but she came up a length and a quarter
short, as the Henry trainee scored her sixth win in seven
starts.
Crazy W ild Desire was able to get up late for third to
advance to the final. High Heels faded back to fourth, but
afterwards won the draw of fourth-place finishers to
advance to the final.
Following the race, Henry said Could It Be Magic is a
simple and versatile filly.
“She’s pretty straight forward,” he said. “She can do it
both ways. She likes the front, but she will come from

Toscano trainees double up in Reynolds
By James Witherite (Tioga Downs Racing Media)
NICHOLS, NY - Linda Toscano trainees Cut and Paste
($2.10) and Soft Idea ($2.40) both achieved early leads and
never looked back in their respective $31,894 Reynolds
Stake divisions for 2-year-old pacing fillies on Thursday
(September 10) evening at Tioga Downs, while Katies
Rocker ($2.20, part of entry) was king among five
2-year-old pacing colts and geldings in their lone $64,788
dash.
The first division for pacing fillies, contested as race 3,
saw Cut and Paste work clear of Twice an Angel (Matt
Kakaley) in the initial stages, controlling the terms
throughout her 1:54.3 triumph. Jim Marohn, Jr. comfortably
rated sectionals of :28.1, :57.4, and 1:26.2 with the
daughter of W ell Said, and Cut and Paste responded
immediately to the late challenge of Twice and Angel to
prevail by 1-1/2 lengths.
In the second division, carded as race 5, Soft Idea settled
off early pacesetters JK Fannie (Kakaley) and W ine Snob
(Mike Simons), drafting through a :28.1 initial quarter before
brushing to the fore upon entering the home straight on the
first occasion. Once clear on the lead, Jim Morrill, Jr. rated
a :57 middle half with the American Ideal filly. Off the far
turn, Soft Idea dug in to repel dual challengers JK Fannie
and W ine Snob, both of which closed in from either side in
a dead heat for second, three-quarters of a length behind
the odds-on winner.
W hile pupils of Toscano took both filly divisions of the
Reynolds, a Jim Campbell trainee prevailed in the lone split
for colts and geldings. Katies Rocker worked clear of his
four rivals with no trouble at all, sprinting off through a :27.3
initial quarter before Simon Allard rated a :31 breather to
race's midpoint. On the backstretch, the Rocknroll Hanover
gelding was nudged along by his entrymate Show the
Fashion (Kakaley), but Katies Rocker proved far superior in
the end. The Fashion Farms homebred edged clear by
1-1/2 lengths, using a :55.1 back half mile to cap a 1:53.4
victory over Safensound Hanover (Morrill), who gave chase
from the pocket once clear in the final sixteenth.
