Sia, Ying-Syuan,
titled Goddess of Theatre by
Performing Arts Review, is a
well-known actress in TV, movies
and theatre.
“The director puts together, layer
by layer, what seems like glimpses
of light and genius, while deftly
utilizing realistic spaces like a dark
room, magazine publisher, pub,
telephone booth, fields, battle
fields, bodies, music, lights, and
light projection to cunningly flesh
out a comprehensive theme,
turning the beauty of theatre into a
comprehensible yet profound
package with infinite imaginative
richness…..”

Even though I am already married with
children and grandchildren, I still have

me in your mind? 40 years of longing
has turned my hair from white to grey.
Now we meet again as foes; may our

The Youth Innovative Design
Festival is a platform that
nurtures young designers
and showcases competitive
creativity. Many creative
works have been shown at
the Festival since 2005, and the event plans exhibition
spaces and relevant events from the perspective of a curator.
With large amounts of resources from the government and
the private sector, the Festival has become the benchmark
for Taiwan’s youth creative design exhibitions. As of
mid-March, 60 departments from 33 schools have signed up
to participate, and 800 pieces of works have been submitted.

In order to
resolve the
Fongshan drought,
Fongshan Jhihsian (County
Chief Officer), Cao Jin, diverted
Kaoping River for irrigation work
during the reign of Cing
Dynasty’s Emperor Daoguan
(1821-1850), thus resolving the drought predicament at the time and improving the
irrigation for the farmlands in the Fongshan area. To commemorate his work, the locals
built a shrine inside Fongyi Academy. In 1900, Viscount Kodama Gentarō raised funds for
the shrine building and transfer project during his inspection visit to Fongshan in 1900.
In 1992, the shrine was upgraded to Caogong Temple. To this day, Caogong Canal
remains as Kaohsiung’s primary irrigation canal; such is its profound impact. Right
behind Caogong Temple stands the square Pingcheng Fort with a “Pingcheng” granite
plague embedded on the wall. One can still feel the impressive magnificence of
what was once the protecting moat.

Origin of Wenchang Temple in Fongyi Academy
Based on the Book of Fongyi Interviews, Bureau of Cultural Affairs revived the original praying ritual and
function in the worship hall and went to Wenchang Shrine in Tainan’s Confucius Temple on October 31, 2014 to
conduct the “sharing the incents” ritual, hoping to continue the cultural tradition in what was Taiwan’s top
academy. Traditional craftsmen and artists were invited for a collaborative creation. The creation artist for
Wenchang Dijun’s statue is Chen, Jheng-Syong; the artist for the shrine and Kuei-sing (Daoist Deity of Fate)
statute is Ye, Jing-Yi; the statute of Jhu Si deity is made by Su, Yi-Syong; the wall painting inside
the shrine is done by Pan, Yue-Syong. In the meantime, the scroll imagery, the gate design at the
Academy entrance, along with its wisdom lighting design are used to render a simplistic and
graceful ambience; all students are welcome to Wenchang Temple in Fongyi Academy to light up
a light of wisdom as a praying ritual for better performance in their academic pursuits.

Founded in 1814 (in the era of Emperor Jiacing in Cing Dynasty), Fongyi Academy,
over 200 years old, is Kaohsiung’s city-designated historic monument. The Bureau of
Cultural Affairs initiated a restoration project to rebuild Fongyi Academy, which
subsequently reopened to the public on November 1, 2014. To create an academy-like
atmosphere, information about the Fongshan region, Fongyi Academy, and the
history of the imperial examination are put on display. In the outdoor area, a
collection of life-size figurines in a history-based setting is exhibited to engender a
lively ambiance. Fongyi Academy is Taiwan’s largest and most complete surviving academy.

The British Consulate
( Wax Statues in the Office at the foot of the hill )
Over 100 years ago, John Gibson, the Acting Consul at
Takow, was very upset by the Feng-Shan Anti-Christian
Riot, during which a lot of churches were burnt down and
some Christians were killed, as well as an incident where
smuggled camphor by some British merchants was
confiscated. As a result, Great Britain dispatched naval
vessels to Taiwan. In order to resolve this dispute, the
Imperial Court of Qing Dynasty sent Zeng, Sian-De,
Administer of Sing-Cyuan-Yong District, to Taiwan to
handle the incident. The two parties met and negotiated in
the British Consulate at Takow, but no consensus was
reached. The event led to the Bombardment of Anping Port
incident. This meeting was one of the most important events
of the Sino-British dealings that occurred in the British
Consulate at Takow. When visiting the British Consular
office at the foot of the hill, do check out the (simulated)
negotiation
scene and see
how it comes

Tokyo Sonata is a portrait of a seemingly ordinary Japanese family.
The father who loses his job but conceals the truth from his family; the
eldest son in college hardly returns home; the youngest son secretly
takes piano lessons; and the mother, who knows deep down that her
role is to keep the family together, but fails to do so. A film that is both
heavy and real, reflecting on the family problems of our society.

Gallery for Citizens:
A New Elegant Program—Ink Wash Paintings by Su, Chung-Ming
As far as Su, Chung-Ming is concerned, traditional ink wash painting is a classic artistic form that preserves
the brushwork techniques and aesthetic thinking of the past and has been refined and passed on from
generation to generation. As a result, ink wash painting can be considered a “program” that can facilitate
learning. The reason that Su delved so deeply into ink wash painting is to help pass on our heritage of
traditional wisdom while developing new expressive modes and aesthetic flavors. This exhibition is the
second time that Su’s works have been shown at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts’ Gallery for Citizens.
Nearly nine years after his first Gallery for Citizens exhibition, Su has now gotten even better at imbuing his
refined and classical landscape compositions with stylistic elements derived from his own ideas and interests. He can thus impart
subtle and otherworldly artistic touches to the schema of classic Chinese landscape painting, and thereby provide a blissful Eden
to quench the thirsty souls of people living amidst the relentless noise and confusion of modern society.

Clues-Art by Textural Combination
In response to the global trend of human-centered development and environmental conservation,
the exhibition, Clues, is held to present the diverse creativity of 24 artists through their works
of fiber art. In the works, viewers can follow clues to discover different stories and traces of
life obtained through the artists’ observation. In a sense, this exhibition is a gateway toward
24 paths of observation of human life and universe. The number 24 is chosen because it is the
number of hours in a day and also the number of solar terms in a year. In addition to symbolizing the close connections between
the universe and the fiber materials, the number also symbolizes the passage of time in the creation of these works. Since
ancient times, fibers and textiles have been an indispensable part of human life. The simple intertwining of warps and wefts can
weave out unlimited possibilities. Using the gentle, subtle and mild textures unique to fiber materials, the participating artists
have created works that tell stories about what really happened to the artists or to others on this land, in this society and in this
ever-changing world. 24 clues to explore the traces of life...

Boundary Narratives II: Dulan Impression
Continuing the theme of its predecessor, the Boundary Narratives II—Dulan Impression exhibition
features the works and manuscript series created by Sakuliu, an artist from the Paiwan tribe, when he
traveled to Dulan village, where the villagers were mainly of the Amis tribe, and stayed at Sintung Sugar
Factory. Titled “Dulan Impression”, this series of manuscripts are records of Sakuliu’s days of living
among an indigenous tribe that was not his own. After years of idleness, Sintung Sugar Factory has
become a magnet for many artists from various places in Taiwan, who come here and become artists
in residence to create their works and interact frequently with local artists. These artists painstakingly
keep their distance from the mainstream art in Taiwan, trying to maintain the purity of their love and commitment to art.

Transformations: Contemporary Media and Manifestations
The classification of art was clear and easy a few centuries ago. However, since the early 20th century, the
boundaries between different art categories have gradually dissolved with complete liberation in both forms
of expression and use of media. Exploring the media and manifestations of contemporary art, this exhibition
features time-based media, spatial installations, and works that use diverse materials to demonstrate the
unlimited creativity and possibilities of contemporary art.

1/31/2016-5/31/2017 ■CMA Gallery 202 New Plant Paradise
Where can you find plants? You can find them in forests, open fields, beaches, ponds, parks, and
on roadsides. However, have you ever paid attention to how they change between seasons? As the
saying goes “See a world in a grain of sand and a heaven in a wild flower,” in the eyes of artists,
everything in nature is the source of their creative inspiration. Taking on the theme of “life education,”
this exhibition features different kinds of contemporary artworks and teaching materials based on natural aesthetics, material
exploration, aesthetic inspiration, and environmental protection. Hopefully, through interactions with different forms of artworks
and exhibits in this exhibition, young viewers will be inspired to look at all things in nature from more diversified perspectives,
appreciate the harmonious coexistence between nature and humanity, and learn to respect different individual creatures.

The affairs of human life are like a chess game. How can one
turn the tables? Let's see how the young emperor outwitted
the spiteful regent to regain his power and brought everlasting
prosperity to the empire. Kangxi succeeded to the throne at

power and gave his partisans free rein to expropriate the
civilians' lands, which triggered angst among the people.
Kangxi ruled to ban the expropriation. Aobai was fiercely

Kaohsiung is fortunate enough to have
such an artist who loved his hometown
so much and continuously served the

only gave him 63 years of time, which
was perhaps too short for him. But during
the limited time he had, he created

Romanticism was the mainstream music st yle in the
19th century. Schumann - a philosopher, a musician, and
sophisticate, well-read literature lover - transformed much
literature into his musical inspiration. His scintillating music
compositions reflected his fascination with literature,
especially in his unique piano works. He was a genuine and
spirited artist who dared to chase his dreams.

Siaomuma Arts Association actively
promotes the aesthetics of life. The
members record various scenes in life
through painting, such as the beauty
of mountains and rivers, nostalgic old
houses, emerald countryside, fruitful
rice paddies with old people and children, and beautiful
women with pets. They capture fleeting moments with
paintings, thus retaining the memories and bringing joie de

Yang, Shang - Feng’s sculpture making methods consist of
geometric abstraction, fusion of
geometric and organic shapes,
and 3D sculpting. These designs
are used as a means to transfer
senses, strength, and energy. This exhibition carries on
previous themes, in which three perspectives are adopted to
investigate the “environment” created by one’s mental and
physical perceptions and how creative thoughts “materialize”
when the body and mind move.

Following elevated global awareness and attention to the human environment, the Container
Arts Festival, a festival first introduced in 2001, tackles the issues of urban living, space, and
development using containers. Ark of Tomorrow: 2015 Kaohsiung International Container Arts
Festival facilitates a discussion on living and the environment, inviting architects to design
a container-turned-ark that carries introspection and hope. Such containers focus on the
future of human existence, humans’ home planet of Earth, how humans adapt to extreme
environments, and where humans find their shelter after traumatic experiences. This exhibition
transforms the image of containers as industrial waste to that of useful materials, enlightening us about the city we live in.

A History of Environmental
Movements in Kaohsiung
From information, incidents and familiar life scenes, mystery resides in all places. Answers may be
abundant; the reality is no less absurd.

Although Kaohsiung
rose to prominence as a
port transport-oriented
city and features heavy
industries, environmental
movements in the city
have never slowed
down. Examples of
Kaohsiung’s efforts to
protect the environment include its Anti-Petrochemical
Protests in the 1980s and the Southern Green Revolution
in the 1990s. The road to environmental sustainability
was and is still an unfinished path with no end in sight.
The A History of Environmental Movements in Kaohsiung
special exhibition will showcase both previous and current
environmental movements in Kaohsiung. This year, the
Fifth Naphtha Cracker in Houjing was relocated, and this
exhibition displays the efforts and hard work invested by
Kaohsiung citizens to protect the environment, how public
consensus evolves and influences local regions before
being passed down, and Kaohsiung’s future development
visions.

In Our Time is a radio station-cum-bistro and a performance and
dining space located inside the B10 warehouse in Penglai Area,
Kaohsiung Pier-2 Art Center. It offers the public and music fans
pleasant dining, music and arts services. Besides its dedication to
offer an excellent acoustical environment and professional stage
facilities, In Our Time also engages itself in discovering local artists
in music and arts as well as professionals and performing groups,
while continuing to nurture peripheral personnel, e.g., PA staff and
band contacts. Through continuous service, opportunities to develop,
perform and shine are in place in order for Kaohsiung’s arts and
performance environment
to grow and thrive, and
this is the goal that we
have always strived for.
Pop music singers and bands performing in Kaohsiung's restaurants, pubs and cafés help
enrich the night life of the city and make the pop music environment more dynamic.
We welcome the residents of Kaohsiung to visit the following locations to experience
through live performances the ad-lib power of these singers and musicians.
The 2016 Kaohsiung Awards Competition received works submitted by approximately
600 artists around Taiwan. After careful selection and discussion among the judges,
a total of five winners of the Kaohsiung Awards, eight winners of the Excellent Work
Awards, and three winners of the Observer Awards were selected along with the other
works nominated for the Kaohsiung Awards Exhibition this year. In addition, thanks to the support from the HCS Calligraphy
Foundation, the Kaohsiung Awards Competition also started to offer the “HCS Special Award for Calligraphy/Seal-engraving
Works” starting from the 2015 Kaohsiung Awards. Because all past winners of the Kaohsiung Awards are now active in the
art field as emerging artists at home or abroad, the Competition has been seen as an important touchstone and milestone
of career development for many aspiring artists. With all the talented artists competing against one another for the highest
honor each year, the Kaohsiung Awards Competition and its exhibition have become an exciting center of attention for many
members of the art world not only from Taiwan but also from other countries.

Focusing on the theme of landscape, one of the most popular themes of artistic creation and
also one of the easiest themes for the public to read and appreciate, this exhibition features
representative works from KMFA’s collection as well as works by several contemporary artists
mainly known for their landscape depiction. From this exhibition, viewers can see different
thoughts and facets of works depicting landscapes and also observe how artists of different
generations seemingly differ but actually share some commonalities in telling stories through
their works. Behind each of the works in the exhibition, there are is an exciting world away from
the hustle and bustle of mundane reality, a beautiful world based on the artist’s life experiences,
unique personalities, life philosophy, and imagination waiting for us to explore and appreciate.
A boundary is an imaginary space, a space that divides you and me, and a space where
different cultures intertwine and interact with one another. Based on the fact that histories
of indigenous tribes in Taiwan were orally passed down generation after generation, this dual
solo exhibition, Boundary Narratives, displays the works of two indigenous artists, Sakuliu Pavavalung and Rahic Talif, pioneers
in combining contemporary artistic creations with heritage of their indigenous cultures. The two artists are invited to write and
