AVCon is Brought to you by...
Mitchell
Chapman

Proud to admit that he has no shame,
you might find yourself objecting
to him sometime during the AVCon
weekend. If he doesn’t sneak off to
feed his WoW addiction.
Adam

there to fully support the convener
in any crisis that may arise. If you
call support ‘Running in the opposite

Video Games
So here’s this giant enemy crab...
SF3: Third Strike
Tournament Rm/Sat 1:00pm-3:00pm
AVcon 2006 sees the first Third
Strike tournament ever to be held in
Adelaide. It’s time to parry those kicks
and bust a shoryuken if you want to
take out the championship title.
SSB: Melee
Tournament Rm/Sat 3:00pm-5:00pm
While other conventions have tried
to imitate AVCon’s gaming presence,
nothing beats the original. The
videogames room is back again in
2005, in a slightly larger location to
2004. This year we will be spreading
the gaming goodness to not one but
two (!) rooms on the Sunday.
After the huge popularity last year
of the videogame section and
overwhelming tournament entries,
we’ve expanded it this year in every
way possible. With double the space
of last year along with the addition of
a tournament room and all weekend
long mature gaming room, this means
20
double the gaming and double the
competitions! Double!
return of the retro gaming couches in
the SHIN TOKYO Gaming Hall.
This year the Xbox 360 hits the
scene with a selection of mouth
watering games that look even better
on the crystal clear LCD we’ve got
throughout gaming. Check out all the
latest release games on show, as well
as few previews and demos of games
on the horizon. Mature Gaming also
features an inside look at the making
of a videogame with an exclusive first
look demo by Backworld studios.
Don’t forget to come and try
Rockstar’s Table Tennis on Xbox 360
for your chance to win a copy of the
game.
From Nintendo 64 to Commodore
64, we’ve got you covered with the
Major tournaments are now held in
the North room on the 4th Floor, side
by side with the arcade. If you want
to compete in any tournament, make
sure you turn up early to put your
name down. Strap on a Power Glove,
reload your Zapper and bring on the
tournaments!
The Gamecube favourite returns
yet again and is set to see some
stiff competition in what is set to
potentially be its final year at the
con, with the long awaited release of
SSB: Brawl. Until then though it’s 4
way match to death to see who is the
champion once and for all, but much
sure you register early to secure your
spot.
Naruto 4
Tournament Rm/Sun 12:30pm-2:30pm
A returning favourite to AVcon, the
Naruto series is still yet to see a
release down under. A solid fighter
under a cutesy anime exterior, you
don’t have to know the anime to
understand being squashed by a
giant frog equals maximum damage.
It’s an all on all fight in the ninja
realm, we can’t let the pirates show
us up!
We
Katamari
SHIN TOKYO Gaming/Sat - all day
While we unfortunately missed out
on the first game, it’s sequel made
it here to much rejoice. Your aim in
the tournament is to roll up as much
household junk as you can find to
impress the King with the biggest
Katamari in the convention! See a
volunteer in Main Gaming if you wish
to compete.
Mario Kart DS
Chillout Room/Sun 1:30pm-2:30pm
One of the best games out on DS,
Mario Kart is going to see a flurry
of shells being exchanging in all
directions with 8 players competing
for pole position. To all the snakers
out there, you better be on the lookout
for that blue shell on your tail if you
think this tournament is going to be a
walk through the park.
Tetris DS
Chillout Room/Sat 10:30am-11:30pm
A classic to kick off the convention,
Tetris DS revives the original with
10 player madness for chaotic
block falling action. Just remember,
sometimes it’s best to let that tetris
go. [Note: All you need to compete
is a DS]
Guitar Hero
Tournament Rm/Sat 5:00pm-6:30pm
It’s time put on your denim jacket,
tie up your bandana and prepare
21 to rock out! This gem of the bemani
genre will require some expert
finger walking if you want to get the
crowd cheering. Select your axe and
prepare to battle in a selection of the
most challenging stages of the game.
Mature Gaming
Soul Calibur 3
After the overwhelming response from last year mature gaming is back,
bigger and better. Now running over both days in the Rumors Cafe on
level six of the union building. Similar to the main gaming room, consoles
will be available for free play. Throughout the course of the weekend there
will be multiple competitions, such as...
Tournament Rm/Sat 11:00am1:00pm
Nothing like attacking your fellow con
goers with a big old 6ft broadsword.
Whilst the con mightn’t allow it
outside the tournament room, it’s time
to enter to smack your rivals out of the
ring in pursuit of the Soul Edge.
Ridge Racer
Chillout Room/Sat 4:00pm-5:00pm
Ridgeeeeeeee Racerrrrrrrr, remember
that one? A favourite from the launch
selection and still the most beautiful
PSP game to date, the tournament will
see some 8 player drift action across
the Japanese coastline. [Note: Bring
along your PSP and a copy of the
game if you have it]
Metroid Hunters
Chillout Room/Sat 1:00pm-2:00pm
The pen is mightier than the sword,
or in this case the stylus is mightier
than the Judicator if you think quick
in this recent addition to the Metrid.
It’s time to pick a hunter and claim
your bounty in some frantic 4 player
deathmatch action on the DS. [Note:
All you need to compete is a DS]
Note: The content on display in mature gaming is MA, as such those under 15 will need to be
accompanied by a guardian at all times. Photo ID required.
Halo 2 [Slayer: Sat 11:30am, Capture the Flag: Sun 11:00am]
What is still arguably the most popular console fps to date is back again
this year, with both single and team tournaments you and your friends
can out-think, outmaneuver and out-shoot the opposition, or just grab a
controller and frag everything in sight.
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter [Sun1:00pm]
One of the most popular launch titles for the Xbox 360. Sound tactics and
good communication with your teammates will serve you better than an
itchy trigger finger in Tom Clancy’s latest tactical shooter.
Goldeneye [Sat 2:00pm]
Released way back in 97, for years it was the undisputed king of the
console fps. Sure since then newer, schmancier games have come out, but
it’s not all about high res graphics and particle effects here at avcon, so
dust off your N64 controllers and return to one of the classics of the genre.
Resident Evil 4 [Sat all day]
Making use of the mercenaries minigame, try to kill as many enemies in
the village as possible before time runs out and have one of our friendly
volunteers record your score.
BACKWORLD
Ever wanted to be a play tester for a computer game? Well now’s your
chance! Head upstairs to the Loft area above the Mature Gaming Room
and play test Backworld, a post apocalyptic first person shooter game by
TAFESA students.
In The Groove 2
King Of Fighters 2002
Need I say more? 2006 sees the
return of the DDR chain of games
as they are meant to be played.
Prepare to compete against some of
Adelaide’s best on Sunday. Even if
you don’t have five feet to hit all the
right steps, feel free to come down
on the Saturday for a fun competition
where the playfield has been levelled.
One of the many gems to come out of
the Neo Geo, SNK’s King of Fighters
series stands it’s ground against
Capcom’s Street Fighter series any
day. Expect competition to be fierce
with some of Adelaide’s top players
competing for the crown.
Arcade/Sat 3:00pm - 4:00pm
Arcade/Sun 12:00pm - 2:00pm
Tekken 5: Dark
Resurrection
Arcade/Sun 2:00pm-4:00pm
The latest version of Tekken is an
arcade exclusive. Dark Resurrection
offers 2 new characters and the
introduction of a few gameplay
tweaks, so its time to swap your pad
for a stick and prove you are the true
King of Iron Fist.
Ultimate Gamer
Tournament Rm/Sun 10:30am-12:30pm
Don’t quite know what game suits
you? Think you’re the best at every
game around? Come and pit
your skills in the Ultimate Gamer
tournament to prove you have what it
takes, no matter the game. Be ready
for anything as we test competitors
against games from any year and on
any platform.
SHIN TOKYO Gaming / Sun
11:00am-12:30pm
WipeOut Pure
Chillout Room/Sun 10:30am11:30pm
One of the hits from the PSP launch,
it’s time to put Adelaide gamers to the
test. It’s going to take some swift air
braking and conservative boosting
to win this tournament [Note: Bring
along your PSP and a copy of the
game if you have it]
Moto GP 06
SHIN TOKYO Gaming/Sun - all day
One of the most visually appealing
games on the 360, the graphics in
Moto Gp are so real you can taste
the asphalt each time you come flying
off your bike. This year it’s 2 wheels
instead of 4, in a race against
the clock.
z . . . . . . . e . . .
With Arcades in SA decline, you’d think they
were a dying breed. Not at AVcon. The Arcade
returns this year better than ever with a variety
of machines across the most popular genres.
Not only do we have In The Groove 2, supplied
by Tunza Fun at Tea Tree Plaza, but also a
tracklisting of all DDR songs as well as the
themes for some anime classics. Tekken 5 Dark
Resurrection makes an appearance this year in
the fighter ring, along with expert fighter King
Of Fighter 2001, courtesy of Tunza Fun, to
meet all your combo needs.
Also expect to find some classic pinball action
on show, along with a Stacker machine to
test your skills for some fantastic prizes. If
the Videogame Coordinator hasn’t gone
mad by convention time, we may be lucky
enough to have a classic 4 player Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles machine in the room,
which offers great value for a couple 20 cent
pieces. If you’re nice enough he might even
give you a free game.
Feel free to cross on into the arcade as you
wait for tournaments, just don’t forget to
come on back.

Cosplay
Sunday 3pm – 5:30pm / Union Hall
Once again AVCon’s highly popular
cosplay event is here. Cosplay is
a big part of any Anime or Video
Game convention. It involves a
combination of costume, roleplay and
a good deal of courage. The cosplay
event is a chance for those who have
braved the wind, the rain, and the
screaming fans to get up on stage
and show us what they’ve got with
the chance of taking home a prize.
This years event will once again
be held in the Union Hall with a live
stream running to the Rennie Theatre
to cater for it’s enormous popularity.
To participate in the Cosplay you can
register at the information desk up
until 1pm on Sunday. Cosplayers will
be required to arrive at Union Hall 30
minutes prior to the competition. Please
understand that late entries may be
turned away due to numbers and time
constraints. A copy of the rules will be
available to look over, and by entering
the event you agree to abide by the
rules set out beforehand.
The categories for this year are
modelled on the most popular
categories from international cosplay
competitions, and are as follows:
• Best Female Character
• Best Male Character
• Best Amateur Cosplayer
• Crowd Pleaser
• Best Sourced Costume
• Best Roleplay
• Best Pirate or Ninja
Quiz Night
Equinox/Sat 6:30pm ~ 10:00pm
The quiz night is one of AVCon’s most
popular and enjoyable events. Come
and test your knowledge of anime and
video games, as well as pirates and
ninja, with loads of mini games thrown
into the mix. What better way to wrap
up a busy Saturday?
We advise you to register tables
at the information desk as space
is limited. Tables should have 8-10
people, so start gathering a group
together. Refreshments will be on sale
throughout the night and the infamous
Pizza Order will be available as well
Pirates Vs Ninja: The
GameShow
Madman Cinema/Sat 3:00pm-4:00pm
As there is no violence allowed within
the venue, Pirates and Ninja alike will
have to find other ways to defeat their
bitter rivals in the glory of battle.
25
This year, the gameshow will be the
grand opening shots to decide who is
the most awesome of all. Beginning
with a team of 3 attendees and their
faithful AVCon faction leader, the
gameshow will go for a total of 5
question rounds, each round will see
a winning team entering a bonus
round to add prizes to a massive
prize pool (pirates read: Booty!
Yaarrr). The catch is, the losing team
each round will have choose one
of their members to be shamefully
disqualified from their team and a
new member will join them from the
audience. The winning team will take
the prize pool for themselves and
prove that they are indeed the most
awesome faction.
Proudly produced by Manifest,
this new event promises thrills and
spills that will surely put each selfproclaimed nerd to the test; because
in the end, there can only be ONE
AVCon Idol.
Oztaku Iron Artist
For a chance to a part of the
gameshow to win the major prizes,
be sure to collect a ticket at the

tee. Want a creative way to see the
convention? These events will take you

coming up with witty dialogue on the
spot, with only the best of the best
making it through to the final round.

Code Of Conduct
AVCon 2006 Intent and Polices
The aim of AVCon is to provide a safe and fun event for people of
all ages to enjoy. The codes are here so that injury and other
unpleasantness is avoided and so that everyone enjoys themselves
during the event. Please take a moment to read through this Code
of Conduct.
The AVCon 2006 Code of Conduct
All attendees present at the Convention agree upon entry to comply
with this Code of Conduct for General Public and accept all of its
conditions.
AVCon is organised by Team AVCon Incorporated.
Conditions of Entry
• The right to refuse entry is reserved. Entry is at own risk. Every
due care has been taken to ensure that the venue is optimally safe.
However the organising committee, Team AVCon and its volunteers
including its associates are not responsible for any loss, damage,
theft or injury that occurs during the event and will not be held
liable.
• Team AVCon, staff and volunteers including its associates and the
Venue will not be held liable for any loss, damage, theft or injury
sustained entering or within the premises.
• No glass, weapons, fireworks, illicit drugs or alcohol will be
allowed into the venue and surrounding area.
• Ticket holders consent to filming and sound recording as members
of the crowd and/or audience.
• The organiser reserves the right to refuse entry and/or eject from
the event, any patron acting in a dangerous manner or in a manner
that may cause harm to other attendees.
• Patrons who wish to consume alcohol must carry photographic
identification. Anyone found to be suppling or buying alcohol for a
minor will be evicted from the event and may face criminal
charges.
• Passes must be worn at all times. Those without passes will be
asked to purchase a new ticket or will be ejected from the venue.
Convention Rating
• The rating of the convention in general is G through to PG-13.
Specific areas and events which may exceed this PG-13 rating will
be clearly marked as such. There are some areas designated as M
rated. Due to differences in international rating structures and
systems, some adult situations may occur in which profanity, nudity
or violence may be present. Where ever possible, we have
indicated these events on the programming schedule to aid in our
patrons viewing choices, but parental guidance is ALWAYS
recommended.
• Areas or events which are rated over MA15+ will require proof
of age to gain entry. Valid I.D. consists of a valid drivers licence,
proof of age card, high school student card or passport. It is the
policy of the convention that if an attendee cannot produce valid
I.D. entry cannot and will not be granted to that area. Team AVCon
is not liable for anyone who uses false identification.
Passes - General Admission, Vendors and Press
• Passes must be worn at all times. If you remove your pass, tamper
with or damage the pass in any way you will be asked by security
to leave or BUY ANOTHER TICKET.
• Those found sneaking into the event without purchasing a ticket
will be escorted to the registration desk to purchase a ticket or will
be banned from the event for its duration.
• The only time you need to remove your pass is at the close of the
convention on each day.
• Press passes may be picked up from registration on the day or
prior to the event if previously arranged with Team AVCon.
• Press passes will only be issued to those able to provide evidence
of employment within the media.
Safety
• Any violation of the codes of conduct which involve activities
prohibited by law will result in the notification of the proper
authorities and eviction from the event without refund.
• DANGEROUS ACTIVITIES WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. This
includes aggressive actions towards other attendees, fighting,
offensive behaviour, indecent exposure, possession of weapons and
other obscenities which could result in substantial risk or harm to
persons or property. Attendees participating in these activities will
be evicted from the venue without right to re-entry or refund. Team
AVCon accepts no liability for any injuries, damages or loss caused
by these activities.
• In the case of an emergency evacuation or situation please follow
official directives.
Animals
• Animals are not allowed into the venue or the event. The only
exception to this rule exists for people who require a registered
Guide Dog to assist with their mobility.
Costumes
• Team AVCon reserves the right to deem a costume as
unacceptable and request the wearer to make modifications as
necessary. The convention is a family friendly event. Please keep
this in mind when choosing your costumes and allow your common
sense and good taste to prevail. Refer to the code of conduct for
Cosplayers for further details.
Food
• Food items including drinks are not allowed inside screening
areas or near electronic equipment such as video game consoles
and TVs. Those found to be consuming food items in such areas will
be asked to leave the area while eating/drinking but may return
once finished.
Drugs
• Team AVCon will not tolerate any use of illegal drugs or
paraphernalia at the convention. Any reports of drug use or anyone
found to be under the influence of drugs will be turned over to the
relevant authorities immediately.
Liability
• Every due care has been taken to ensure the venue is safe.
However Team AVCon, its volunteers and associates are not
responsible for any loss, damage, theft or injury that occurs during
the event. Attendees are responsible for their individual actions and
any repercussions that may result. Staff are on hand for assistance
in any situation, but any civil or medical emergency is to be
handled directly by the relevant authorities.
Minors
• AVCon defines a minor as anyone age 12 or under. AVCon is a
family event and we want everyone to have a fun and safe time
during AVCon 2006. We encourage people of all ages to come
and enjoy the convention, but since some of our programming
contains adult content and the venue owners ask certain policies of
us the following rules apply.
• All children age 12 and under MUST be accompanied by a
parent or guardian at all times.
• Under no circumstances will minors be allowed entry to the
convention unaccompanied.
• When minors pick up their pre-registration or registration badges,
they are to be accompanied by their parent or designated guardian
– who is also registered as an attendee of AVCon 2006.
• Any guardian must be age 18 or over and have written parental
permission from the minor’s parent or legal guardian.
Security Policy
• Security patrols the event for general offences and possible
criminal activity. General offences are handled by Security, who
can eject persons from the convention.
• Criminal actions are handled by the Head of Security or the
Executive staff of AVCon.
• Certain offences can lead to immediate ejection from the
Convention regardless.
• Removals can be issued for the following reasons but are not
limited to:
- Harassment reports.
- Disorderly conduct / disruption of the Convention.
- Violation of any law; be it local, state, national or international.
- Violation of any Convention Policies and other organisations
policies directly relating to AVCon (eg. University of Adelaide,
Vorpal Con etc.).
- Avoiding Security staff trying to speak with you.
- Flight from Security staff after a policy violation has been declared
but before the issue is resolved.
- Violations of ANY of AVCon 2006’s Codes of Conduct, as stated
by Team AVCon.
• Criminal actions, if they occur, should be reported to Security
who will follow through with the appropriate course of action
deemed necessary.
• Security does not have general responsibility for any aspect of
the Convention, but can choose to respond to any disruptive action
occurring anywhere in the Venue. If Security chooses to remove an
individual from the Convention site, Team AVCon or Security will
immediately revoke the attendee’s pass without the right to refund.
Filming and Photography
• AVCon holds all rights to any filming or photography taken
during the convention and may use such material for future
promotions of the event.
• Any commercial use of such material gathered at AVCon must be
approved by the AVCon committee.
• Any attendee participating in a staged event gives consent to be
filmed and/or photographed during the event.
• Filming or photography of attendees without their expressed
permission will not be tolerated.
• Inappropiate use of such technology will be met with expulsion.
Smoking
• There is absolutely NO SMOKING permitted inside public/
function areas. It is against Australian Law covering all States and
Territories. Do not smoke at the Convention or in any of the venue
areas!
• Smoking will set off fire-alarms, even in the toilets; anyone found
deliberately setting off fire-alarms will have to answer to Security
and the Authorities.
• Smoking is permitted in some outside areas, away from
buildings, doors, windows, air intakes etc.
Theft Policy
• THEFT – or shop stealing is a criminal act that has a zero
tolerance policy within the Convention. Team AVCon will seek
criminal justice with the local authorities for any person that is
caught. You will immediately have your Convention attendee
privileges removed by Security and be added to a list of people for
watch or banning from future AVCon events.
Weapons and Props Policy
• Team AVCon defines a weapon as being any item which is large,
pointy, sharp or heavy etc. enough to cause possible harm or any
item which could cause harm to other attendees or property.
• Examples of what is NOT allowed:
- Bladed or edged weapons.
- Live steel, of any kind, such as knives, swords, axes, martial arts
equipment, shuriken, chainsaws etc.
- Firearms (unless the owner is an authorised law enforcement
official).
- Most wooden weapons, such as bokken, staffs etc.
- Liquid dispensing weapons.
- Anything that shoots a projectile (this includes realistic and plastic
guns).
- Anything that looks like a weapon in the opinion of the Security
staff.
- Anything Team AVCon, Security, the Uni or Law deems illegal or
overly harmful.
• Team AVCon encourages attendees that have weapons as part of
their cosplay costumes to use cardboard/plastic/rubber/styrofoam
“fake weapons” instead of hard, edged, dangerous “real
weapons”.
• Anyone caught with a weapon deemed unsafe will be asked to
put it in storage at the event or their own storage (such as inside
their car) until needed for the cosplay competition. If they are found
later to not have stored the weapon they may be escorted by
Security to leave the Convention and have their pass revoked
without refund.
• Anyone found to possess an illegal or real weapon of any kind
will be reported and handed over to the relevant authorities and
their convention pass will be revoked without refund. AVCon is a
family event not a battlefield!
• All functioning projectile weapons are NOT allowed at all, this
includes individuals who possess a weapons permit or concealed
weapons permit. Keep them at home. Anyone found in possession
of such a weapon, will result in their immediate removal from the
Convention. If caught in the illegal possession of a functioning
projectile weapon, you will be reported and turned over to the
proper law enforcement agencies.
• Upon entry to the Convention you will be asked to “check-in”
your weapons/props whether or not you think they are dangerous.
We have a strict NO WEAPON policy; this means all props must
be checked into storage. You will be able to access your props for
photo shoots and the cosplay competition only.
• Weapons should not at anytime be waved around. It can be
considered “brandishing” to wave a weapon around in a manner
that may be construed as use of the weapon. If your weapon is
drawn in a public/function area your pass will be immediately
revoked without refund. Keep in mind South Australian Police
assume all drawn weapons are functional and Police Officers will
act accordingly.
• If you are unsure that your weapon is acceptable in public/
function areas, please ask the Security Staff or Registration for an
inspection of your item.
• Please use good judgement when bringing props/weapons to the
Convention. All weapons need to be checked by Security or
Registration staff.
I hereby hold Team AVCon, the organising committee (and its staff
and volunteers) harmless from all manner of damages and/or
claims and agree to indemnify AVCon 2006 (and its organisers,
staff and volunteers) from any and all actions, claims or damages
of any manner. I have read the AVCon 2006 Code of Conduct and
agree to follow them throughout the duration of my Convention visit.
